The unsolved case of Asha Degree, a missing girl from Shelby, North Carolina, continues to baffle family members and investigators. At the time of her disappearance Asha was 9 years old. Asha's parents discovered she was missing on February 14, 2000. Her father had last checked on her and saw her around 2:30 a.m. that morning. Around 6:30 a.m. later that morning, Asha's mother realized Asha was no longer in her bed and was missing.
Tips came in from all around Cleveland County including a truck driver who indicated he thought he saw Asha walking down the road that morning. He told investigators that the little girl he saw matched Asha's description and he had seen her around 4:00 a.m. What made Asha leave her house remains a mystery. Later in 2001, a bookbag with Asha's name and phone number was found along rural road N.C. Highway 18. Authorities searched the area but did not find anything else.
Asha's date of birth is August 5, 1990 and today she would be 19 years old. Tips and information should be directed to the Cleveland County Sheriff's Department at 704-484-4822 or NC SBI at 1-800-334-3000.

This story has always bothered me....It just doesn't seem right that this little girl would have just got up and left her house at 4:00 am on a February morning! And why didn't that truck driver do something when he saw a 9-year-old walking along the road at 4:00 in the morning!?!?

At the time little Asha went missing it was reported in local papers that she had been in a little trouble with her parents, nothing major, typical kid stuff. That is why she was out on the road, probably walking to a friends. The TRUCK DRIVER should be ashamed for not calling 911 when he saw her that night. She was a tiny little thing, looked more like 7.

Thanks, LM, for posting the pics...I tried to, but I couldn't get it to work.
Critter, what kind of trouble would cause a 9-year-old to walk out on a cold, dark morning when her friends would probably still be asleep? Something is just wrong with this story....I know there were questions about the dad back then, but I don't remember the details.

Your welcome. It is freaky to think about a 9 yr old leaving home at 4am all alone. Why? I understand there might have been some Parenting issues that happened. But 9 yrs old and out at 4 am just does not make sense to me.

I cannot remember anything about the dad, will see what I can find out thru the archives of our local newspaper. If memory serves me her backpack was later found, off to the side of the road.
It was too many yrs ago for her to be the victim of an online predator. I used to wonder if some adult that she trusted had said to come to his/her house next time she was unhappy at home... Why the heck was she out at 4am?? If she had not been seen by the truck driver I would have thought she was another Shaniyah Davis. We know she was alive at 4am.
