Normal Ex-bishop Paul Tonga did not explain why he never contacted police

Post by Nama on Fri Nov 20, 2009 10:02 am

Ex-bishop Paul Tonga told Fox 4 that Burrel Mohler Jr.'s wife came to him several times and relayed fears that her husband was abusing their children.

Tonga, who was the leader of the church where Mohler Jr.'s worshiped, explained that he questioned Burrel Mohler Jr. and the children, but didn't learn anything.

"He denied the accusation," Tonga said. "Nobody admitted anything for the children."

Tonga said his investigation ended there. He did not explain why he never contacted police.

Normal New child rape and bestiality charges brought against 6 Missouri men graphic details emerge

Post by Nama on Fri Nov 20, 2009 12:01 pm

Thursday, court documents revealed details of child rape, sodomy and bestiality in the group of 6 Missouri men who are accused of committing these crimes against children in their family.
The original story is below:

Six victims in Missouri told authorities that they were sexually abused 15-25 years ago when they were children, and have come forward as adults. They claimed that they were abused by relatives and told stories about sexual performances, mock weddings, rape with various objects and that one of them had to have an abortion at 11 years old, according to CNN.

Burrell Edward Mohler Sr., 77 and his four sons Burrell Edward Mohler Jr., 53; David A. Mohler, 52; Jared Leroy Mohler, 48; and Roland Neil Mohler, 47 have all been arrested in connection with suspicion of sexually abusing children. None of the men have entered a plea. Bond is set for $30,000-75,000 for each of the men.

On Friday, police also arrested Darrel Wayne Mohler, 72 the younger brother of Burrell Edward Mohler Sr. who was charged with two counts of rape.

The local Sheriff believes there are more victims that may come forward. Police are still collecting information, and searching their properties. The victims stated that they were told by the men to put their bad memories on paper and place the paper in a jar and bury it, and now the police are searching for the jars.

The entire community in shock and many people have stated that they have known these men most of their lives and find this very difficult to believe.

Three of the six men are lay ministers at the Community of Christ Church: Burrell Mohler Sr., David Mohler, and Jared Mohler. They have since been relieved from of their duties, according to the church. The Community of Christ Church used to be part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), and split from the LDS Church in the 1800s. In 2000, the Community of Christ changed their name to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

LDS Church headquarters are located in Salt Lake City and the church does acknowledge that the Community of Christ Church was part of their church, but that they are recognized as a different faith now.

New child rape and bestiality charges brought against 6 Missouri men graphic details emerge

Last week, 6 victims in Missouri told authorities that they were sexually abused 15-25 years ago when they were children. Another victim came forward Monday, and 15 more charges were filed against family members for performing the acts on children. On Tuesday, in a hearing that included many family members, several claimed that the allegations are false.

In court documents released Thursday, one of the victims who is now 28 years old, claims that several of the sisters tried to run away in 1988, after the abuse had continued for several years. They wrote down acts of the abuse and placed them in a jar and buried them. They were caught attempting to run away and as punishment they were forced to watch one of the men sodomize their brother. The court documents list several of complaints complied by the victims so far.

Three of the six men are lay ministers at the Community of Christ Church: Burrell Mohler Sr., David Mohler, and Jared Mohler. Normal Ex-Church Member Recalls Mohler Family, Believes Sex Abuse Charges

Post by Nama on Fri Nov 20, 2009 9:14 pm

A former member of the Mormom Church who attended services with the victims in the Mohler child sex case says that she remembers the girls talking about sexual abuse at the hands of their father, and even claims that one of the alleged assaults happened at church.

"Nicole," 27, who asked that her identity not be revealed because of fears of retribution, says that her memories of the victims fit with the shocking accusations of sexual abuse. Nicole says that one of the victims worked as a babysitter, caring for her and her siblings.

She says that she remembers the babysitter using Barbie dolls to demonstrate sexual acts.

"Ken was daddy, and little girl was daughter, or husband and daughter," said Nicole. "She was bending the dolls over, in multiple positions, making different noises, different sounds. I actually almost threw up thinking about it, but she in one scenario, the Ken doll and the Barbie, Barbie didn't want to do what Den doll wanted, so Ken doll stuck his hand out and was slapping her."

The alleged victims named so far in the Lafayette County investigation are all the children of one of the suspects, Burrell Mohler Jr. They were members of the Mormon Church at the time of the alleged crimes, and Nicole says that she remembers attending services with them.

Nicole says that her parents reported the incidents to the Mormon bishop but nothing happened. She says that when she was 11 or 12, she remembers another Mohler sister talking about being sexually assaulted while at church.

"She was crying, said Nicole. "I pretty much asked her why, what was going on, and she was saying her dad and some other gentlemen, she didn't say who, she said some other guy, they've been touching her private spots. She put her hand between her legs and was showing. Long story short I got up spooked out, walked off and told my parents."

Nicole, who says she left the Mormon Church before she turned 20, says this time her parents pushed the bishop to call police, but says that they back down after the church responded by threatening to excommunicate her family.

Normal Warning: Very graphic

Post by Nama on Sat Nov 21, 2009 10:50 pm

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

A probable cause statement in the Mohler case, dated November 3rd, 2009, contains very graphic details of several occasions of sexual abuse perpetrated against the alleged victims in, what appears to be one of the most horrendous cases of sexual abuse against children by their own family members. First contact was made with a detective at the Independence Police department in August of 2009 to report crimes against children under the age of 12 on property located at 3067 Old Concord Rd. in Bates City, Missouri, Lafayette County.
This property was purchased by Burrell Edward Mohler Sr. on March 22nd, 1974 and was then purchased by Burrell Edward Jr. on July 19th, 1995. The probable cause statement also notes that Burrell E. Mohler, Sr. fathered four sons, Burrell E. Mohler, Jr., Jared L. Mohler, Roland N. Mohler and David A. Mohler. The statement further explains that Burell E. Mohler, Jr. fathered six children, five girls and one boy and that all six of the children have approached authorities with information concerning the alleged abuse by Burrell Mohler, Sr., as well as all four of his sons.
St. Louis Abusive Relationships Examiner, Angela Ricketts, warns that the details, which follow are very graphic in their nature. One remembered incident places all five of the girls lined up on a bed on their knees, facing away from Jared Mohler, Burrell Mohler, Sr., and Burrell Mohler, Jr., while they inserted foreign objects into the anus of each girl. Reportedly, several objects were used during this incident but only two were identified with one being a pencil and the other being a screwdriver.
Another incident places the oldest girl outside, where she was forced to lie down on her back on a pile of pallets. The victim reports seeing a German Sheppard with something tied around its mouth and then she reports that Mohler, Sr., Mohler, Jr., Jared Mohler and Roland Mohler were all present and that they assisted the dog in climbing on top of her and inserting its penis into her. The victim recalled being very sore after this event. Another incident of bestiality alleging Burrell Mohler, Jr. forced one of his daughters to have sexual intercourse with a horse has been brought to light.
In another remembered incident, one of the girls was part of a mock wedding ceremony to Jared Mohler and once the ceremony ended, she was led inside a chicken coop. The victim states that she remembers her grandfather placing a blanket over the glass entry and saying, “you all have fun.” Jared Mohler then had sexual intercourse with the girl. The probable cause statement confirms that many of these mock ceremonies were held, with each girl picking flowers to adorn their hair and wearing special dresses for the ceremonies and after each ceremony the girl would be forced to have intercourse with the individual they were “married” to.
The eldest of the girls reportedly became pregnant and had an abortion at the age of 11 and 1/2. This victim recalls most of the abuse occurring between the ages of five and eleven years old. This would place the incidents within the period of six years, occurring from 1988 through 1995. In another report by Fox4, authorities are actively seeking other individuals who may have fallen victim to the Mohler’s. One family has come forward alleging Burrell Mohler, Jr. sexually abused their son, who was seven at the time.
St. Louis Abusive Relationships Examiner, Angela Ricketts, has located, at least, two different child protection orders filed against Burrell E. Mohler, Jr., with one dating back to 1997 and another dating back to 2006 as well as adult abuse without stalking protection orders filed in Jackson County, Missouri.
If any member of the Mohler family, sexually abused you or someone you know, St. Louis Abusive Relationships Examiner, Angela Ricketts, asks that you come forth and report the incident or incidents to the proper authorities. This horrific case will be followed until its conclusion and updates of any information will be made available as frequently as possible. Abuse is never okay. Help stop the cycle now.

Normal "He's a very respectable man," Gina Fauth said of Burrell Mohler, Sr.

Post by Nama on Sun Nov 22, 2009 5:24 pm

Some friends and relatives of five Missouri men accused of repeatedly raping young girls in their family say the charges against them aren't true.

Prosecutors allege that Burrell Mohler, Sr., 76, and his four sons, Burrell Jr. (Ed), David, Roland and Jared, as well as Burrell's brother, Darrel, repeatedly raped nieces, daughters and granddaughters in the Independence, Mo., family while the children were growing up in the 1980s and '90s.

But the mens' supporters say the allegations are products of the children's imaginations, The Kansas City (Mo.) Star reported Sunday.

"He's a very respectable man," Gina Fauth said of Burrell Mohler, Sr.

The Star said Fauth sang in church with Mohler's late wife, and isn't buying any of the child sex abuse charges.

"I have no reason to not trust him," she said. "It's mind-boggling. I'm just sick over it."

"I don't believe it, and we go back to 1951," added Ron Gamble, a brother-in-law of the senior Mohler. "A lot of smoke and mirrors. Children's minds are very malleable, and people can really be sincerely honest in thinking that this did happen."

Someone needs to ask these people that are so supportive how they explain the incest magazines etc that were found at the home of at least two of these men. Girlie magazine would have one thing, but incest porn? IMO that is not an item that should be found in the home of a respectable man and I bet Gina wouldn't let her daughter or granddaughter spend an afternoon with any of these 'respectable Mohler men'.BJ

Normal Many back Missouri incest suspect

Post by Nama on Sun Nov 22, 2009 11:24 pm

In June, Burrell E. Mohler Sr., 76, seemed a perfectly reasonable choice to give the Father's Day sermon at his tiny Bates City Community of Christ Church.

After all, he was a family man. Proud of his four sons. Loved all those grandchildren.

But months later, Mohler's reputation as the strict but good patriarch would come crashing down.

He's in jail now, after allegations from at least three grandchildren that "sleepovers" on his farm often meant incestuous rape, and that when granddaddy sang "Itsy-Bitsy Spider," his hands ended up in wrong places. After allegations that their uncles wedded and bedded first-graders in a chicken coop and that their father did unspeakable things to them less than a mile from that little white church.

Once the charges — 42 so far — were filed, it seemed the Mohler family was shattered as irreparably as the bad-memory jars the little girls purportedly buried and authorities earlier this month hoped to dig up.

It's a dark and ugly family portrait, causing dismay and disbelief among relatives and friends.

Time in court will tell which is the correct one.

Many stand fiercely by Mohler and his four sons, Ed, David, Roland and Jared, as well as his brother, Darrel — all in jail.

Gina Fauth, a good friend who sang church duets with Burrell Mohler Sr.'s wife, doesn't buy any of the allegations.

"He's a very respectable man," Fauth said. "I have no reason to not trust him. It's mind-boggling. I'm just sick over it."

What about the prosecutor's relentlessly recounted atrocities against girls as young as 5?

"I don't believe it, and we go back to 1951," said Ron Gamble, a brother-in-law of the senior Mohler.

Yet all or nearly all six children of Burrell "Ed" Mohler Jr. gave credence to the tales of twisted family relationships, according to court documents.

Nor did it help the senior Mohler's legal defense or public image as a grandfather when police hauled incest pornography out of his home in Independence, Mo.

While some question the validity of the accusations, others may ask why authorities did not investigate earlier.

In the 1980s or early '90s, at least some of the grandchildren reportedly went to their mother about the abuse, according to police documents. Instead of going to law enforcement, she told the head of her Mormon church. And nothing happened.

An Overland Park, Kan., man, who once shared custody of his 7-year-old son with an ex-wife who married into the Mohler family, said he tried to alert the Lafayette County sheriff, the Missouri Division of Family Services and a court-appointed guardian to what he feared was happening at the Mohler place.

"I notified everybody I could notify in February 2000 about this." Then, three months ago, an Independence police detective told the man there were multiple victims, "and my son was on the list."

"I said: 'You mean it took them nine years to figure this out?'"

Many of the allegations directed at the Mohlers defy what experts encounter in sex abuse situations — group encounters involving children within the same family are rare, primarily because they are less apt to be kept secret.

Still, there are cases of incest being so ingrained in a household that, for some families, "the act becomes normalized ... a family value, as common as Sunday dinners or watching football on TV," said Joseph Beck, a therapy director at Spofford Home, a Kansas City nonprofit that treats children with severe emotional problems.

"Although it's abnormal, it becomes, 'This is how we do things,'" Beck said, adding that victims can be trained early in life not to trust the outside world.

Clinicians widely believe that child molestation, especially within a household, is driven more by urges to be violent and exert power than act out instilled sexual practices.

"It's not about sex. It's about power and control," said Judith Ann Cohen, who specializes in child-rape cases at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. "A man who feels he is king of his castle gets to abuse his children because, well, you can if you're king of your castle."

Beck agreed. "Usually it revolves around a single patriarch of a family, the man in power."

Normal sorry this is so long......but, it's worth reading

Post by Nama on Mon Nov 23, 2009 2:18 pm

Last June, 76-year-old Burrell E. Mohler Sr. seemed a perfectly reasonable choice to give the Father’s Day sermon at his tiny Bates City Community of Christ Church.

After all, he was a family man. Proud of his four sons. Loved all those grandchildren.

A churchgoer who was present that day believes Mohler’s message followed the lectionary Scripture suggested by the mother church: the Gospel of Mark 4:35, the story of Jesus quieting the storm at sea.

Fortunate, perhaps, that he did not speak on Mark 10:14: “Suffer the little children to come unto me.”

Because months later, Mohler’s reputation as the strict but good patriarch would come crashing down.

He’s in jail now, after allegations from at least three grandchildren that “sleepovers” on his farm at 3067 Old Concord Road often meant incestuous rape, and that when granddaddy sang “Itsy-Bitsy Spider” his hands ended up in wrong places.

It’s a dark and ugly family portrait, causing dismay and disbelief among relatives and friends. They paint a starkly different picture — one of people who took joy in their children, their churches and friendships.

Time in court will tell which is the correct one.

Many stand fiercely by Mohler and his four sons, Ed, David, Roland and Jared, as well as his brother, Darrel — all in jail.

Gina Fauth, a good friend who sang church duets with Burrell Mohler Sr.’s wife, doesn’t buy any of the allegations.

“I don’t believe it, and we go back to 1951,” said Ron Gamble, a brother-in-law of the senior Mohler.

Yet all or nearly all six children of Burrell “Ed” Mohler Jr. — including one who is a police officer in a Kansas City suburb — gave credence to the tales of twisted family relationships, according to court documents.

Nor did it help the senior Mohler’s legal defense or public image as a grandfather when police hauled incest porn out of his current Independence home.

While some question the validity of the accusations, others may ask why authorities did not investigate earlier.

In the 1980s or early ’90s, at least some of the grandchildren reportedly went to their mother about the abuse, according to police documents. Instead of going to law enforcement, she told the head of her Mormon church. And nothing happened.

“I said: ‘You mean it took them nine years to figure this out?’ ”

•••

As a boy, Burrell Mohler Sr. lived near Monroe, Iowa.

He met his wife-to-be, Alice Elefson, at what then was Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. She had grown up on a farm near Butler, Mo.

Early in his career, Mohler built electronics for weather balloons. He later settled in the Bates City area, working as a manufacturers sales representative.

Alice taught preschool until starting a machine quilting business in Bates City. She was known for her quilts and gardens, family said.

Their first son was born in February 1956. They named him after his father, but he would be known as Ed, from his middle name.

David arrived the next year. Seasons passed before Jared was born in early 1961, and then quickly the year after, Roland.

In 1974, Burrell Mohler Sr. bought the house on Old Concord Road. The 55 acres and the country setting seemed a good place to live and keep an eye on his fast-growing sons, then 18, 16, 13 and 11.

“I’ve known those boys since they were born,” said Gamble, of Independence. “They’ve all been responsible citizens. They’ve all had respectable jobs. They’ve been active in church. I’ve never known any of them to smoke or to drink or to carouse around or gamble — any of the vices that you could think of.”

Like their parents, the sons attended Graceland. David later got a job at the southwest Iowa institution. Ed became a fireman, and Roland became a paramedic. Jared worked as a data administrator at a private firm.

All but Jared married, and as early as 1978, granddaughters were wandering the house and grounds on Old Concord Road. Ed would have five girls and a son. Roland and David would add five more grandkids.

Alice was a devout follower of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, now known as the Community of Christ. Her strong faith is a key reason why some scoff at the charges.

“Alice had such deep moral strength and integrity,” said her sister, Kathryn Sacry, who came from Montana for last week’s hearing for her relatives. “The very thought of what was happening now would break her heart.”

Family members note that Alice died of cancer at age 59 in 1991, and the accusers allege some of the crimes happened in the ’80s. “She would have been on top of it,” Gamble said, “and would not have permitted such a thing.”

Many remember how the family children once looked forward to what they called “cousins camp” every summer, a happy and normal gathering of the young in the tribe.

“I just cannot wrap my head around it,” said Erin Hill, who went to school with David and Roland’s children — who are not mentioned in any of the court documents.

Hill considers herself a good friend of the senior Mohler, who used to drive her to the Bates City church and who once came to her house to pray for her after she accidentally super-glued shut an eye.

“Those three men I know personally are probably the nicest men alive,” she said. “If you can’t trust them, then you can’t trust anybody.”

Less than a year after Alice died, the senior Mohler married a woman who worked at the Community of Christ Temple in Independence.

They resided in a small, white bungalow on a corner lot in Independence — him in the basement lately since she found a porn trove above the ceiling tiles.

Police took incest mags titled Family Taboo and Best of Family Secrets, along with hand-labeled videotapes, guns, computers and sex toys.

The porn find was unfortunate, said Alice’s cousin, Bob Bruch. “But it doesn’t convict him.”

Bruch hired Burrell Mohler Sr. when Bruch ran maintenance at the Community of Christ Auditorium. “He was a good employee. Did what he was told, knew what he was doing and didn’t complain.”

Bruch, who once worshipped with Mohler in Bates City, said he had no doubts about Mohler’s commitment to Christ.

Gamble told of how he might have been with Mohler at month’s end. “Usually we get together at Thanksgiving, so we see each other then.”

He had to settle for a courtroom in Lexington, Mo., on Tuesday.

•••

That wounded children might bury bad-memory jars caught the nation’s attention. Early accounts said the sisters were trying to exorcize their demons. One, however, called it a childish attempt to record the crimes against them.

Although machinery rooted through the topsoil for two days searching for those jars, search-warrant affidavits indicate only pieces of glass were found, nothing about notes in children’s handwriting. If those condemning words can’t be found, however, the Lafayette County Courthouse now holds thousands more that could be more damning.

The allegations run from about 1986 to 1995, a period when the senior Mohler would have been in his 50s and his sons in their early 30s or late 20s. David and Roland were fathers themselves by the time.

The charges paint the grandfather as both key player and cheerleader in the sexual games.

“That’s my boy,” the senior Mohler allegedly said, encouraging a son’s rape of a granddaughter. “You all have fun,” he said another time. This story avoids naming alleged victims, some whom live in the area. Others have moved a thousand miles away.

The facts supporting the charges in the court documents are briefly these:

To Ed’s children, a “sleepover” meant something different than for most children. Unlike most kids their age, they dreaded summers. It meant spending more time at grandfather’s farm. Some of the girls said that after Alice died, when they spent the night, it meant taking turns sleeping with their grandfather.

One, now 26 and living in a Western state, first came to police in August to allege she was raped in his bed at least three times. She recounted mock marriages — complete with white dresses and flowers in her hair — consummated with two uncles, Jared and David Mohler.

In one of 14 counts, she alleged being subjected to bestiality.

A sister, three years older, said the crimes began when she was 6. She accused her grandfather of three rapes, twice in an abandoned house nearby.

Court papers state that at age 7, she was in bed with a slightly younger sister when her father entered the room and raped them both. Her allegations add up to 17 counts.

Eleven more counts involved a third sister, now 28. She told police of her grandfather remarrying her sister and an uncle in the little Bates City church — while her father, Ed Mohler, allegedly raped her in a pew.

She also recounted running away with her sisters, but they didn’t get far. Their punishment, she alleged, was Dad making them watch as he sodomized a sibling.

The allegations go on and on, also involving a great-uncle, Darrel Mohler. He is being held in a Florida jail, waiting to be sent to Lexington for an unhappy family reunion.

Lafayette County Prosecutor Kellie Ritchie said she probably will not file any more charges, though more could come from other jurisdictions.

Legal representation for most of the men may be public defenders. Jared, who has pleaded not guilty, is the only one to have an attorney so far.

•••

“She has suppressed many of the memories of abuse and is very fearful of her grandfather, father and uncles,” court documents said of the 26-year-old accuser.

The statute of limitations for such forcible rape and sodomy charges generally extends to 20 years after an accuser turns 18.

The Mohlers’ defenders insist the tales must arise from dark fantasies or misplaced bitterness. Suppressed memories are controversial, in some cases successfully challenged as unreliable or untrue.

Indeed, it was learned last week that the digging for bodies on the former Mohler place arose from strange allegations — little girls helping to stab a man to death and seeing a woman — who apparently was also sexually abused — held captive so long that the girls thought she was a sister they had not known.

The unidentified woman — who claimed to have been kept in a crawl space and held long enough to see at least one of her babies buried in the basement at the Old Concord Road property — came forward to the police with her own accusations, according to court documents.

Police have offered little information on what was found and none about the woman, who is said to be unrelated to the Mohlers.

For Gamble, it just stretched the accusers’ credibility anew.

“A lot of smoke and mirrors,” he said. “Children’s minds are very malleable, and people can really be sincerely honest in thinking that this did happen.”

Fauth agreed: “What kind of emotional condition are they in? Are they stable?”

Police and prosecutors apparently are satisfied with what they have heard.

Many of the allegations directed at the Mohlers defy what experts encounter in sex-abuse situations — group encounters involving children within the same family are rare, primarily because they are less apt to be kept secret.

Still, there are cases of incest being so ingrained in a household that, for some families, “the act becomes normalized … a family value, as common as Sunday dinners or watching football on TV,” said Joseph Beck, a therapy director at Spofford Home, a Kansas City nonprofit that treats children with severe emotional problems.

“Although it’s abnormal, it becomes, ‘This is how we do things,’ ” Beck said, adding that victims can be trained early in life not to trust the outside world.

Despite common assumptions, adults who sexually abuse children are not likely to have been molested themselves.

“That connection has been way overblown,” said Mark Chaffin, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

According to a British study of 224 men sexually abused as boys, only about one in 10 later committed offenses of their own.

Clinicians widely believe that child molestation, especially within a household, is driven more by urges to be violent and exert power than act out instilled sexual practices.

“It’s not about sex. It’s about power and control,” said Judith Ann Cohen, who specializes in child-rape cases at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. “A man who feels he is king of his castle gets to abuse his children because, well, you can if you’re king of your castle.”

Beck agreed. “Usually it revolves around a single patriarch of a family, the man in power.”

•••

In 1995, the farm property shifted to Ed Mohler, who rose to the rank of captain in his 24 years with the Independence Fire Department. He left the firehouse on North Spring Street five years ago.

His 1978 marriage to Jeanette lasted two decades, the time in which all the alleged abuses occurred.

“Where was she through this whole thing?” Fauth asked.

Records, however, indicate that the children told their mother: “At the time, complaints by the mother were taken to the head of the church rather than law enforcement. No official investigation was completed.”

Paul Tonga, a former bishop of the family’s Latter Day Saints or Mormon church, recalled Jeanette Mohler coming to him back then. He said he asked Ed Mohler about the accusations, but he denied them, so Tonga did not pursue the matter further.

A statement released Friday by the LDS church — which noted that Ed Mohler was excommunicated in 2007 for personal conduct unrelated to child sexual abuse — acknowledged that Tonga should have consulted with church leaders. If he had, the statement said, “he would have been told to ensure the proper authorities were notified.”

Ed and Jeanette Mohler’s divorce was finalized in early 1998. She could not be located for comment.

Kelly Halford, who was a court-appointed advocate for the Mohlers’ children in the divorce case, said her client-attorney relationship kept her from answering questions about the divorce case. “You can see that in the judgment of dissolution, I believe the father was given supervised visitation. Other than that, I can’t comment any further.”

Mohler remarried in 1998, again in 2001 and finally just last June.

Court documents show Jeanette is cooperating with police.

In 2000, she warned that a 7-year-old was in danger at the farm, said the father, who now lives in Overland Park. His son was with an ex-wife who married Ed Mohler.

The father had become alarmed that the boy was missing a lot of school, and he contacted Jeanette for information.

“She had a court order saying she had to let (Ed) have her children on the weekends, so her children knew my son. She told me that one of their daughters said that Ed was quite fond of my son and likes to sleep with him.”

The Overland Park man was shocked. “She poured her heart out … crying hysterically and (saying) her children had been molested by Ed and his father for years. It was hard for me to comprehend.”

He said he related the information to child-welfare officials in Clay County, where he then lived, but he was accused of trying to cause trouble.

At one point, the Mohlers tried to get an order of protection against the man.

A spokeswoman for the Missouri Department of Social Services said no comment could be offered. A Lafayette County sheriff’s deputy did check on the Mohler place, and the boy began attending school more regularly.

The Overland Park man collected a thick stack of records — now in police hands. The records showed he and his family were sent to a court-appointed psychiatrist, who recommended that he get immediate custody, which he soon did.

The man on Friday told The Kansas City Star that his son, now 17, denied any abuse occurred, but said authorities told him again last week that his son was a possible victim. The man does not speak to his ex-wife, who could not be reached for this story.

He expressed anger at those who defend the accused Mohlers: “Now is the time to speak up. Those who have feared the Mohlers don’t have to now.”

•••

Like Burrell Mohler Sr., his sons were churchgoing.

David attended the Community of Christ Church in Lamoni, where he was a lay deacon. Jared was a deacon in a Columbia congregation. The church headquarters said their licenses were suspended soon after the arrests. They also revealed that Ed and Jeanette petitioned to leave the church in 1982 and joined the LDS.

Roland was active in the Restoration Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which splintered off when the Community of Christ began ordaining women.

David ended up working for Graceland University. He and his wife, whom he met when they were students, have longtime friends there, including Bob and Jerie Gail Ramsey.

A retired Graceland professor, Ramsey knows the Mohler patriarch and several of his sons and grandchildren. His wife played piano at two Mohler weddings.

Count them among the ones who don’t believe the charges. David Mohler recently offered to help them clean out their garage.

“We’re not as young as we used to be,” Jerie Gail Ramsey said. “He said, ‘When you’re ready to do it, give me a call.’ He’s that kind of a person.”

The Ramseys called David a “fairly strict but good” father to his two daughters and a man who ensured everybody was greeted and felt welcome at his church.

Roland Mohler owns a house not far from Old Concord Road. He and his wife have three children.

Jared Mohler is a database administrator for Carfax in Columbia. The search warrant for his home indicated police were looking for evidence of child porn.

The accusers alleged that they had been taken to various locations where they were posed in sexually provocative ways and that pictures were taken as naked men climbed on the bed. What police found on videotapes at Jared Mohler’s home is unknown.

•••

The farm has changed hands once again, and no Mohlers live there today.

The machine-torn ground where their children once played will heal in a season or two, but the wounds said to have been inflicted on the children themselves are more difficult to soothe.

Some wonder whether those buried jars with the painful stories bottled inside could still turn up.

More likely, they are broken into shards, just like a family.

At one point in this story, the church is referred to as
"The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints"
While the above church may be spin off churches,
none of the above are " LDS or Mormon
"The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints (LDS) or Mormon"
is the Original church, and head quartered at Salt Lake Utah.
Please do not confuse any of the above with the Mormon faith.

Normal The Rest of the Story on the Incestuous Hillbillies and the Mormon Church

Post by Nama on Tue Nov 24, 2009 11:36 am

Yesterday on Daily RFT we had a couple bones to pick with a misleading headline in the local daily and the bible-thumping defenders of Burrell E. Mohler Sr. Along with his brother and four sons, the 74-year-old Independence, Missouri, native is accused of repeatedly raping his elementary school-aged granddaughters.

Turns out the article in the Post was cribbed from a much longer and much more compelling piece that led Sunday's Kansas City Star.

The latter feature lays out the Mohler family tree, details all of the disgusting deeds in question and sets it all against the backdrop of the family's involvement with the Mormon Church and an obscure offshoot called the Community of Christ, headquartered in Independence and also founded by Joseph Smith.

The take-home message of the piece? Both churches failed to step in and stop the unspeakable abuse.

The RFT's sister paper in Kansas City, The Pitch, sums up the situation thusly:

Burrell Mohler Jr. left the Community of Christ in 1982 and joined Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), or Mormon church. Burrell Jr.'s former wife, we've learned, took her children's complaints that they were being abused to the church. But a church bishop, Paul Tonga, made the idiotic decision to investigate the matter himself. (The Star reported that Burrell Jr. was excommunicated from the LDS church in 2007 for personal conduct unrelated to child sexual abuse.)

The Community of Christ and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are similar but different. The Community of Christ reacted quickly when the story broke. The church said it took the allegations seriously and stripped the three Mohlers of their licenses. The church also held a prayer vigil. In a Fox 4 report about Tonga's inaction, Community of Christ officials made a point to distance themselves from the Mormon church.

For its part, the Mormon church has said Tonga should have consulted with church leaders, who would have told him to notify the authorities

The Star balances the accusations against the Mohlers with character witnesses on their behalf (granted they're from hypocritical religious fanatics, but still) and excellent reporting on how and why such unfathomable abuse can occur (still no word on how Wilford Brimley got involved though.)

Here are the first few paragraphs:

Last June, 76-year-old Burrell E. Mohler Sr. seemed a perfectly reasonable choice to give the Father's Day sermon at his tiny Bates City Community of Christ Church.

After all, he was a family man. Proud of his four sons. Loved all those grandchildren.

A churchgoer who was present that day believes Mohler's message followed the lectionary Scripture suggested by the mother church: the Gospel of Mark 4:35, the story of Jesus quieting the storm at sea.

Fortunate, perhaps, that he did not speak on Mark 10:14: "Suffer the little children to come unto me."

Read the whole thing a couple comments upthread.

Post by TerryRose on Tue Nov 24, 2009 1:44 pm

Thanks, BJ, for clarifying further how this church is involved in this. There is a quote in the bible that says, in effect, that Christ said people pretend to be gentle lambs but are inside ravenous wolves, and another time he said something like Be gone from me, you workers of iniquity. (Someone else here might know the exact quotes, I don't remember them exactly, but the gyst of them come to mind reading this thread.) I guess there were always hypocrits hanging around churches and synagogues since time began, pretending to be holierthanthou, but secretly doing nothing but evil in their own lives. Christ chastized them more than 2000 years ago. All faiths have had them always, so sad.

I am sorry, I just cannot bring myself to read all these posts word by word. It is just way, way too sick for me to even think about. What gets me is these are suppose to be men of the cloth..gentiles, whatever you want to call them. I am just so turned off by these idiots who use religion as a form of control and absolute sick, descpicable acts. It is one reason why I have a major problem with organized "religion" or religion at all. Even as a child, I got zip from it. Sorry, hope I don't piss anyone off. I am a "recovering Catholic." Look at these priests that hide behind the cloth, these religious idiots that murdered and raped Sandra Cantu' - and now this. And this really is just the tip of the iceberg. It literally makes me ill!!!

I am sorry Marica. I unfortunately am NOT surprised. Please don't get me wrong..not because of LDS or any named religious group. Nothing much surprises me in a good way anymore when it come to organized religion. Now, I know there has to be some lovely churches out there with good, loving people. So please don't think I am some kind of heathen or whatever the word is..I just cannot bring myself to go to church but I do NOT in any way look down on anyone whose faith is strong in an organized church.

Post by TerryRose on Tue Nov 24, 2009 3:41 pm

Wrap, I understand how you feel, as I am not a "recovering Catholic", but am still a Catholic, having gone through much soul-searching about my faith/religion back in my younger days. I hated the "control" factor, the judging that the previous religious generation indulged in, the constant sermons about increasing our giving into the collection basket and not caring that we were struggling to raise a family and keep them clothed and fed while priests could afford any diversions or pleasures they desired, the view of the clergy which was mostly pro-men and anti-woman, etc., ad nauseum. But spiritually, I found nothing that rang more true in my own mind than the teachings of my youth and thus I came back into the fold still believing in the faith of my ancestors, but with more beliefs piled on top of it. I am now grateful, rather, that my parents and ancestors saw to it that the faith was taught and passed down, especially when we see the cases we follow here---it strikes me that almost none of the murdering moms, dads, and the perpetrators of the most vicious crimes, have had any meaningful faith in a higher power other than just viewing their own selves as their personal gods.

You are the decent, law-abiding, caring person you are today because you were taught somewhere in your youth the laws and principles upon which the Catholic/Christian faith is based. What man has done to taint this faith is another matter entirely, as man will always find a way to spoil a good thing no matter what it may be. When we drop all that control thing, like being told we will go to hell if we eat meat on a Friday or miss mass on a Sunday, we strip the faith down to its origins, and that is belief in Jesus and God the Father, and the Ten Commandments as given to Moses, down to the bare bones, I still believe and am grateful to have been taught this. If it be of God, it will carry on, if it is not it will perish---it probably has been preserved in spite of all the wrongdoings of men, because God has wanted it to carry on and teach generation after generation. We probably, as a society, would have been much more degenerate than we are right now if we had never been taught this faith, since it seems to be the only institution that still teaches morality.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading both your posts, Cherylz and Terry Rose. Very well put - especially the part about these men viewing themselves as their own personal God. You said it all with that statement. And, I would say that this also applies to people who literally think they are "holier than God". I have a family member like that and it is another reason I want no part of organized religion.

Thanks for clarifying so much for me, Terry Rose. I know I an always rely on you as the voice of reason.

And, Cherlyz, there is nothing worse when someone brags about their "religion" and try to turn your thinking around or put you down and think you will burn in hell. crap

Some of the teachings of the church have nothing to do with God. I went looking for this on the internet with hopes that someone had said better than I could and found this:
The real reason for this is NOT Biblical, nor does it have anything to do with God!!! The Pope lives in Rome, Italy, and a very long time ago, the fishing industry needed to make more money, so the religious leaders decided that they would make one day a week, a meatless day, thus being ok to eat fish that day...which then became a law. The fishermen were happier now, they had more money, and could support the church! That's why!
Source(s):
A book about the history of Catholicism

I'm sure that there is some similar reason the people of the Jewish faith aren't allowed to eat pork.......and the reason for many other rules of various religions.

My mother took myself and several friends to Lake Superior for a weiner roast and swimming for my 6th birthday on a Friday. Most of the friends were Catholic or Jewish..........my mom ended up going home and coming back with peanut butter sandwiches. :lol!:

Normal Child incest pamphlets found in second search of Mohler property

Post by Nama on Tue Nov 24, 2009 7:02 pm

A second police search of the Independence property of Burrell Mohler Sr., charged with an array of sexual offenses against some of his grandchildren, turned up child incest pamphlets.

Also seized were more adult movies, including a pornographic DVD about having sex with “Grandma & Grandpa,” according to new documents released today.

Other items listed on search warrant affidavits include what authorities are calling “incest porn” as well as homemade videotapes, a Focus on the Family film series, and a Book of Mormon Stories for Children.

That and other Mormon literature taken from a house and a shed indicate that some of the materials could belong to Mohler’s oldest son, Burrell “Ed” Mohler Jr., who also has lived in Independence.

While the senior Mohler and most of his sons belonged to the Community of Christ Church, Ed Mohler, 53, joined the Mormon church in 1992 but was excommunicated in 2007 for personal conduct unrelated to child abuse.

Mohler, 77, is in jail in Lexington, Mo., along with his four sons and a brother from Florida. Authorities say the men carried out years of sexual abuse on children as young as 5 in the extended family. Darrel Mohler is being held in Florida. In all, the Mohler men face 42 charges.

The search of Mohler’s home in the 1300 block of Dodgion Street was conducted Friday by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities believe some of the alleged assaults against the Mohler children in past decades were photographed or taped..

The first search of Mohler’s home turned up incest magazines, computers, tapes and recording equipment. Similarly, a search of a Columbia, Mo., house belonging to his son Jared Mohler, 48, also turned up computers, tapes and video equipment .

The other sons are David Mohler, 52, of Lamoni, Iowa, and Roland Mohler, 47, of Bates City, Mo.

I am sorry, but am I reading this correctly? There was a porn movie about having sex with grandma and grandpa? Was this movie showing the grandparents doing it so they could show it to their grandchildren?

If so, then grandma needs to take a short walk to the grey bar motel.

I mean really, how sick these people are. I don't believe I've ever heard of anything so outlandish in my life!! I cringe everytime I see a new post but it's almost like a train wreck I just can't pull myself away from. What more could they find on these sicko's??

Normal Warrant Return Reveals New Morbid Details In Mohler Case

Post by Nama on Wed Nov 25, 2009 8:57 am

A warrant return from Burrell Mohler Jr.'s ex-wife's house, exclusively obtained by KCTV5, has revealed a new set of morbid details about the murder allegations surrounding the sex case with Burrell Mohler Sr. and five other Mohler family members.

The search warrant return from Jackson County reveals jewelry removed from the alleged victims to make their bodies harder to find and codes that could identify people.

Burrell Mohler Sr.'s Independence home on South Dodgion Road has been subject to multiple searches since his arrest two weeks ago, but the most recent list of items seized came from Burrell Mohler Jr.'s ex-wife's house extends beyond the sexually explicit materials previously removed.

The list on the warrant return includes things like wooden boxes of jewelry, a Louis L'Amour book, and a wooden box containing paper with the words "Jeff-Alabama."

Some of the young women who reported childhood sexual abuse at the hands of the Mohlers told police Burrell Mohler Sr. and his oldest son told them they removed jewelry from murder victims, search warrants have revealed. The victims said it was "so that the bodies could not be found with metal detectors."

In a search warrant, one of the alleged victims described pieces of paper previously seized "as 'codes' used to identify names and locations."

The woman remembered the codes being written inside Louis L'Amour books, according to the search warrant.

Also newly released was information about a sudden search Tuesday of a shed on the property of Burrell Mohler Jr.'s ex-wife, where authorities seized a journal and an ax.

An investigator said they've yet to read through the journal, because they are still bogged down with all the video tapes taken in Friday's search.[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Does this mean that they not only have been raping children and other sexual crimes, but that they have also murdered some?

No, BJ..of course I do NOT want you to stop posting the threads. They are very hard to read, but unfortunately, it is reality. crying

I agree with what Juanita said upthread. Big Time!!

And I have to ask what Terry Rose is asking..does this mean there are some people that have been murdered? These "codes" are very disturbing!

The last article was a bit cryptic. I wish the info had been easier to decipher. It leaves the reader with many questions. I'm hoping that there will be another article about this later today.
I know that the girls accusing the Mohlers had mentioned ONE killing, but now it sounds like there may have been more.

Yesterday, authorities announced the items seized from Mohler Sr.'s home, including several pornographic magazines (many titles, such as Letters to Penthouse, Penthouse Forum are legal) and several DVDs.

Here are the titles:

* Virtual Sexuality
* XXXXXXX Grandma & Grandpa (Xs courtesy of BJ )
* Mouth Wash
* 40 of Your Youngest Stars
* Black Panty
* Please Insert It
* Black Dirty Debutantes
* Black Street Hookers
* Senior Stimulation
* Loving You Always

videos025.jpg
Authorities snapped photos of videos at 10007 E. 20th St.
Authorities also found a pamphlet titled "About the sexual abuse of children" and seized cameras, VHS tapes, DVDs, photos, cassettes, notebooks, paperwork, religious books, a book of Mormon stories for children, a VHS copy of Arthur and a copy of Louis L'amour's The Sackett Companion.

A search of Burrell Mohler Jr.'s home turned up boxes of books, letters, journals, photos, VHS tapes, audio tapes and an ax.

That's a lot of footage for investigators to sift through.

In an interview with a Jackson County Sheriff Deputy, one of the victims in the Lafayette County child sex investigation said she witnessed people other than family members being sexually molested by the Mohler men currently in custody. She also claimed she witnessed people being killed.

Another granddaughter told detectives that the murders happened near the Missouri River and that her father, Burrell "Ed" Mohler, Jr. would flip a ring in the air whenever she witnessed a killing.

According to court documents, one woman said her grandfather, Mohler, Sr., had a wooden box containing necklaces, rings and broaches that she claims belonged to these other victims of the Mohler men.

The woman also told detectives that Mohler, Sr. called another wooden box "the treasure" and granddaughters said it had old coins inside.

In a second search of Mohler, Sr.'s home, detectives seized a wooden box with jewelry and a treasure chest style of box that had old coins inside.

One granddaughter also told detectives that the Mohler men used codes to identify names, addresses, phone numbers, monetary amounts and locations in books.

Mohler, Sr. and his four sons are expected to appear in Lafayette County court again next week. Mohler, Sr.'s brother Darrel Mohler is being transported back to Lafayette County from Florida.

IMHO, any family member or anyone else who openly knew what these men were doing should be arrested. They are just as much to blame.

Agree, Wrap. I hope they go after the church. The abuse was reported to them and they did nothing. It should have been reported to LE immediately, just the same way the a teacher would be required to report it. I would love to know what advice the church officials gave to the mother. What did they tell her to do about it?

I think investigators will be looking closely at the members and leaders of that church. This has got to be the sickest crime in history.

It sounds more and more like, not a church, but a cult to me. It sounds like, at least in that church-going, seemingly church-controlling family that they were living the life of a cult like Jonestown and a similar case that happened years ago on a farm in a nearby city whereby the leader (a man of course) did whatever he wanted to those families that joined. He controlled them with fear and wound up killing an entire family and burying them in the barn floor simply because they were not obedient enough to suit him. This story screams cult to me---an evil enterprise with a church used as a front.

PS The name just came to me in the latter case I have mentioned, it was Lundgren, and their cult/farm was in or near Kirtland, OH.

Normal wife of Burrell Mohler Jr. told Bishop Tonga several times the father was abusing his children

Post by Nama on Sat Nov 28, 2009 10:05 am

Burrell Edward Mohler Jr. and his wife joined the Mormon Church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) in 1982, and their membership with Community of Christ was withdrawn, according to the Community of Christ.

Mohler Jr. signed papers indicating his family wanted to withdraw from the Community of Christ Church and join the Mormon congregation.

Paul Tonga, a former Mormon bishop in Independence, said during the time period of the alleged abuse, the wife of Burrell Mohler Jr. told him several times the father was abusing his children, according to a report on FOX 4 news.

Repeated messages to Tonga were not returned on Friday.

Tonga questioned Burrell Jr. and his children but didn’t discover anything, saying “he (Burrell Jr.) denied the accusation,” according to the report.

The bishop’s investigation ended there and he did not explain why he never contacted the police.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in a statement they have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to child molestation and abusers.

When there is suspected abuse, the church first contacts authorities and then the local bishop for support and guidance.

In this case, had Tonga conferred with church leaders about past child abuse allegations against Burrell Jr., the leaders would have told him to contact authorities, according to the church’s written statement.

Mohler Jr., according to the church, was excommunicated in 2007 for personal conduct non-related to child sexual abuse.

Normal Horror Show in Missouri/ Another point of view

Post by Nama on Mon Nov 30, 2009 2:35 pm

The Mohler case grinds on in Missouri. For those unfamiliar with it, six men in the Mohler family, Burrell Mohler Senior, and his five sons, have been accused of ritually abusing Burrell’s grandchildren back in the ‘80s.

The memories, we’ve been told, were initially “suppressed” by the 26-year-old woman who came forward with them. She claims that from the age of five to eleven, she was regularly and ritually molested by these men. She claims she was impregnated and forced to have an abortion at the age of eleven, and that the abuse stopped after this.

Her siblings insist the accusations are true, and that she and her sisters wrote down accounts of the abuse while they were children and buried them in jars on the property, as per their abusers’ instructions.

Law enforcement has arrested the accused, even dragging back to Missouri an elderly uncle who’s been living in Florida for the past two decades. The property in question has been dug up. No jars with these written memories have apparently been found.

In fact, we’ve been offered no evidence beyond the accusations. Every now and then I’ll see an excited headline about new “evidence,” and each time that “evidence” turns out to be either another lurid accusation, (They forced two children to help murder a 300 pound man! They made a little girl have sexual contact with a dog! And with a horse! They kept coded lists of murder victims in their Louis L’Amour books!) or something embarrassing but not especially incriminating, like a cache of porn, some of which has been reported to involve incest.

It’s interesting to visit links provided by Kansascity.com, examine the list of what search warrants have uncovered on Mohler property, and compare them with the headlines announcing some of these supposedly incriminating finds. For instance, a single green pamphlet entitled “about the sexual abuse of children” is apparently what prompted the announcement, “Child Incest Pamphlets Found In Search of Mohler Property,” which leaves readers with the impression that a sheaf of pro-incest leaflets had been uncovered.

Under the headline “Evidence Against Mohlers mounts” can be found the announcement that “Also seized were more adult movies, including a pornographic DVD about having sex with ‘Grandma & Grandpa.’” This apparently refers to a VHS listed here (Graphic language). An Internet search on its title seems to indicate that it’s less about incest than about geriatric sex.

This collection of porn is not what one would expect to find in the house of someone who raped his grandchildren until they hit junior high school. The titles revealed in the PDFs of the affidavits (“Senior Stimulation” “Black Dirty Debutantes,” “Virtual Sexuality”) don’t indicate interest in sex with undeveloped girls. It appears to be garden variety dirt involving, at worst, actresses who might be under 17, but are definitely past puberty. And it’s not clear how Burrell Sr’s stash of smut qualifies as mounting evidence that not only he, but his sons (the MohlerS in the headline), were busy raping third graders and murdering occasional adults twenty years ago.

But hey, why should that spoil everyone’s fun? The case has provided an opportunity for people to show off their virtue by rolling around in unrestrained hatred. One blog has speculated about whether this “raping family” carries a “degenerate gene.” Another has referred to the accused as “incestuous hillbillies.” Their religion is being triumphantly cited as if it indicates the accusations are true. Sanctimonious pieces are being written (“Precious years were lost in the Mohler investigation”) that offer token nods to the presumption of innocence, but rely on the presumption of guilt.

And embarrassing questions are going unanswered. Last week a woman surfaced who accused the Mohlers of holding her prisoner in their basement, impregnating her twice, killing one of her infants and burying it in the floor. Where’s the follow up on that? Any infant bones found in that basement? What’s this woman’s story, and can anyone verify that she dropped out of sight long enough to get pregnant twice? What about the jars of notes that were supposedly buried all over the Mohler property? What about the claim about people being murdered by the Mohlers?

The stories we’re hearing should have left behind some level of physical evidence – long-buried jars of notes, dead bodies, scars, etc. But instead of actual human remains, or medical evidence, or even verifiable accounts of disappearances in the area, we’ve gotten convoluted stories. Stolen jewelry from murder victims was kept in wooden boxes, we’ve been told, and coded lists of victims were tucked into copies of popular novels. It’s as if someone, faced with a dearth of evidence, is trying to make objects that they know are owned by the accused seem significant and damning.

So far all we’ve learned for sure is that Burrell Mohler Sr. had a collection of pornography.

This isn’t shaping up into a convincing case of child abuse and murder. It’s shaping up into a long-simmering family feud of estranged relatives and angry exes that’s escalating into a public tragedy.
