An attempted terrorist attack on a Delta flight on Christmas Day is on the minds of local travelers, even though security at Lindbergh Field remained the same and travelers went about their business as though nothing had happened.

Government sources claim the suspect may have ties to al-Qaida.

Law enforcement officials are now identifying the Nigerian as Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab. Others have slightly different spellings of the name.

Federal officials say Mutallab claims to have been acting on instructions from al-Qaida to bring down a plane on U.S. soil.

The plane was about to land in Detroit on a flight from Amsterdam. Flight 253 was carrying 278 passengers.

A Dutch passenger says an explosive device that failed to detonate "sounded like a firecracker in a pillowcase."

Peter Smith of the Netherlands, who was seated five rows behind the man, says, "First there was a pop, and then was smoke."

Passenger Syed Jafri, a U.S. citizen who had flown from the United Arab Emirates, says he was seated three rows behind the suspect and saw a glow, and noticed a smoke smell. Then, he says, "a young man behind me jumped on him."

He says "Next thing you know, there was a lot of panic."

Another passenger, Melinda Dennis, says the suspect's legs appeared to be badly burned afterward, and his pants were cut off. She says she saw no other burns on his body or other marks.

They say other passengers subdued the man -- possibly keeping him from doing more damage. One witness says a passenger, sitting across from the man, climbed over other passengers and across the aisle to try to restrain the suspect. He appeared to have been burned in the process.

The suspect is being held at a hospital.

Officials say stricter security measures were quickly imposed on airline travel, but were not specified.

A law enforcement source says it's up to the attorney general to make an official determination of a terrorist act.

A White House official has said, "We believe this was an attempted act of terrorism."

As President Barack Obama vacations in Hawaii, officials say he's keeping up to date on the terror attempt. The White House says Obama was notified about the incident and discussed it with security officials.

The White House is coordinating briefings for the president through the Homeland Security Department, the Transportation Security Administration and the FBI.

Delta Airlines issued the following statement about the incident aboard Northwest Flight 253:

"Upon approach to Detroit, a passenger caused a disturbance onboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253. The passenger was subdued immediately and the crew requested that law enforcement meet the flight upon arrival. The flight, operated by Northwest using an Airbus 330-300 aircraft with 278 passengers onboard, landed safely. The passenger was taken into custody and questioned by law enforcement authorities. Delta is cooperating fully with authorities and additional questions should be directed to law enforcement officials who are leading the investigation."

Federal intelligence officials say a Delta Airlines passenger from Nigeria claimed he was acting on behalf of al-Qaida when he tried but failed to blow up a flight Friday as it landed at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
"We believe this was an attempted act of terrorism," a White House official told The Detroit News on condition of anonymity.
A U.S. intelligence official said the explosive device was a mix of powder and liquid. It failed when the passenger tried to detonate it. The passenger was in custody and being questioned by federal officials Friday evening.

Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab terror attack/ UPDATE: Another Nigerian man Removed From Same Flight as Christmas Attack TODAY, 12-27 Empty “We heard a pop and the next thing you know it was a fire”

Post by Nama Sat Dec 26, 2009 2:24 am

“We heard a pop and the next thing you know it was a fire,” Calvin Kakar, a passenger on Northwest Airlines Flight 253, told The Detroit Free Press. He was among the 278 passengers on a trans-Atlantic flight to Detroit that ended with the arrest of a man who tried to ignite an explosive device in what officials are calling an attempted terrorist attack. Travelers recounted the confusing series of events to news organizations waiting for them at the gate of Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

“It sounded like a firecracker in a pillowcase,” said Peter Smith, who was also quoted by The Free Press.

But after the ignition of the device, the sequence of events as remembered by the passengers grows hazy.

“There was a little bit of light, a little bit of — kind of flamish light and there was fire,” Syed Jafry, who said he was sitting three rows behind the suspect, told CNN. “And people began to panic.”

“There’s a lady shouted, ‘What are you doing? What are you doing?’ ” said Elias Sawaz, in an interview with WXYZ-TV in Detroit.

Some remembered the practical effort to put out the fire.

“We said, ‘There’s fire, bring water!’ ” recalled Zeena Saigal, speaking to WXYZ.

Richelle Keepman, seated at the back of the plane, initially had trouble discerning what was happening.

“I think we knew at the point when we saw the fear in the flight attendants’ eyes, and they grabbed the fire extinguishers,” Ms. Keepman said to WDIV-TV in Detroit.

Then, Ms. Saigal said, a “sturdy guy put a lock” around the head of the suspect, identified by authorities as Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23.

“He handled him pretty good, I think,” Mr. Jafry said of the volunteer, who jumped over several rows of seats.

Mr. Abdumutallab was ultimately dragged to the front of the plane, pants down, severely burned.

“He was burnt quite severely on his leg,” Melinda Dennis told WXYZ. “They were very careful in trying to make sure that he didn’t have anything else on him.”

Ms. Dennis continued: “He was very calm. He didn’t show any reaction to pain or any feeling of shock or nervousness. He just looked like a normal individual.”

Still, despite all the commotion, some passengers did not find out until much later why they were delayed getting off the plane. Richard Griffith told The Free Press that he was sitting in the back and did not “see or hear anything.”

So, like everyone else not on the flight, he will have to wait until the amateur video is released to the media. The Free Press quoted Ms. Keepman: “We just saw a man filming it and heard screaming.”

I am so confused as to how he got the explosive device on board the jet...you cannot even take anything but a tiny shampoo, a tiny conditioner. Are people now going to have to be frisked to get on a plane? If this device had detonated it could have been a true disaster.

Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab terror attack/ UPDATE: Another Nigerian man Removed From Same Flight as Christmas Attack TODAY, 12-27 Empty components were apparently mixed in-flight

Post by Nama Sat Dec 26, 2009 3:04 am

The commotion began as Northwest Airlines Flight 253, carrying 278 passengers and 11 crew members from Amsterdam, prepared to land in Detroit. Travelers said they smelled smoke, saw a glow, and heard what sounded like firecrackers. At least one person climbed over others and jumped on the man.

"It sounded like a firecracker in a pillowcase," said Peter Smith, a passenger from the Netherlands. "First there was a pop, and then (there) was smoke."

Smith said one passenger, sitting opposite the man, climbed over passengers, went across the aisle and tried to restrain the man. The heroic passenger appeared to have been burned.

Afterward, the suspect was taken to a front-row seat with his pants cut off and his legs burned. Multiple law enforcement officials also said the man appeared badly burned on his legs, indicating the explosive was strapped there. The components were apparently mixed in-flight and included a powdery substance, multiple law enforcement and counterterrorism officials said.

Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab terror attack/ UPDATE: Another Nigerian man Removed From Same Flight as Christmas Attack TODAY, 12-27 Empty Mutallab's name was in US data base, but NOT on a no fly list

Post by Nama Sat Dec 26, 2009 3:30 am

One law enforcement official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said Mutallab's name had surfaced earlier on at least one U.S. intelligence database, but not to the extent that he was placed on a watch list or a no-fly list.
The flight began in Nigeria and went through Amsterdam en route to Detroit, said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., the ranking GOP member of the House Homeland Security Committee. A spokeswoman for police at the Schiphol airport in Amsterdam declined comment about the case or about security procedures at the airport for Flight 253.
A spokesman for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Akin Olunkunle, said all passengers and their luggage are screened before boarding international flights. He also said the airport in Lagos cleared a U.S. Transportation Security Administration audit in November.

Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab terror attack/ UPDATE: Another Nigerian man Removed From Same Flight as Christmas Attack TODAY, 12-27 Empty Father reports son's actovities to the US Embassy

Post by Nama Sat Dec 26, 2009 10:29 am

The would-be terrorist is the son of Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, a recently retired former First Bank chairman and former minister in Nigeria, according to Nigerian news site Thisday Online.

It reports that Mutallab Sr. has been uncomfortable with extreme religious views and six months ago reported his activities to United States' Embassy. A source close to him is cited as saying the father was surprised that after his reports to the US authorities, the young man was allowed to travel to the United States.

Thisday Online says that the family home of the Mutallabs in Central London is currently being searched by officers of the Metropolitan Police, and that the suspect, Abdul Farouk Umar Muttalab who is an engineering student at the University College, London, had been noted for his extreme views on religion since he went to high school at the British International School in Lome, Togo.

After high school, the would-be terrorist who is now investigated for alleged links with Al Qaeda, went to University College London to study engineering and later relocated to Egypt, and then Dubai. While in Dubai, he declared to his family members that he did not want to have anything to do with any of them again.

Muttalab Sr. is reported to be a regular visitor to the US where he goes for vacations and medical exams. Muttalab is married to an Arab of Yemeni-descent but it has not been confirmed that this woman is the mother of the 23-year-old man.

Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab terror attack/ UPDATE: Another Nigerian man Removed From Same Flight as Christmas Attack TODAY, 12-27 Jasper-schuringa
Jasper Schuringa, a director from Amsterdam, reportedly subdued 23-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab when the latter attempted to ignite a “small explosive device” during Flight 253’s landing descent into Detroit, Michigan.

Schuringa says that he heard a sound like a firecracker going off nearby, and noticed a small flame near Abdulmutallab’s groin after seeing smoke. Schuringa then wrestled the burning object away from Abdulmutallab, and threw it away. Schuringa then opened the suspect’s jacket to see if there are any traces of the material hidden in his person, and also helped the custodians handcuff him to his seat.

“I am fine. I am shaken up. I am happy to be here,” says Schuringa. He incurred minor burns to both his hands during the ordeal, but he says that it’s nothing serious.

The suspect reportedly used a syringe to inject chemical into a powder, which is what the other passengers probably heard as the “firecracker”. This technique has never before been seen in previous terrorist attacks.

Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab terror attack/ UPDATE: Another Nigerian man Removed From Same Flight as Christmas Attack TODAY, 12-27 Empty Back to Google News US-bound passengers get patted down as US asks airlines worldwide to tighten security

Post by Nama Sat Dec 26, 2009 12:05 pm

Airline passengers across Europe faced body searches and new limits on hand luggage Saturday after U.S. authorities requested tighter security in response to an attempt to bomb an airliner in Detroit.
U.S.-bound travellers were undergoing body searches at Amsterdam's airport, where authorities say Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab of Nigeria boarded Northwest Airlines Flight 253 and tried to set off an incendiary device as the plane was descending to its destination.
"The extra measures apply worldwide on all flights to the U.S. as of now and for an indefinite period," says Judith Sluiter, spokeswoman for the Dutch National Coordinator for Counterterrorism.
Passengers flying to the United States from London's Heathrow said they received text messages informing them that the hand baggage allowance had been reduced to one item. Airport officials also said security had been heightened.
"We got a text message this morning at about 11 a.m. to say that new rules meant we could only take one piece of hand luggage," said Karen Ward, 44, from Reading, Berkshire. "I think they've handled it very well."
Italy's civil aviation authority, ENAC, said it had tightened security at airports for passengers leaving for the United States, with measures including increased manual body and baggage searches.
The extra measures were requested by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration and will initially remain in place for 72 hours, ENAC said in a statement.

Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab terror attack/ UPDATE: Another Nigerian man Removed From Same Flight as Christmas Attack TODAY, 12-27 Empty Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate, also known as PETN

Post by Nama Sat Dec 26, 2009 8:02 pm

Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate, also known as PETN, is the explosive substance that Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab used in an attempt to commit a terrorist act on Northwest Airlines flight 253 to Detroit. Pentaerythritol is used as a vasodilator, as well as an explosive.
What is PETN, Explosive or Lifesaver?
PETN can be used as an explosive or as a vasodilator, or medicine to widen blood vessels. It contains the elements carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen. When used in medicine, it is classed as a nitrate, along with other nitrates such as nitroglycerin. Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate does not occur in nature.

Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab terror attack/ UPDATE: Another Nigerian man Removed From Same Flight as Christmas Attack TODAY, 12-27 Empty DEC 27 : A passenger onboard the same Northwest Airlines flight that was attacked on Christmas Day was taken into custody in Detroit

Post by Nama Sun Dec 27, 2009 1:53 pm

A passenger onboard the same Northwest Airlines flight that was attacked on Christmas Day was taken into custody in Detroit on Sunday after becoming verbally disruptive upon landing, officials said.

A law enforcement official said the man was Nigerian and had locked himself in the airliner's bathroom. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing.

Delta Air Lines spokeswoman Susan Elliott said crew members requested that security remove the man from Flight 253 after he became disruptive. The remaining 255 passengers got off safely, she said.

Airport spokesman Scott Wintner said it was the same flight on which a man tried to set off an explosive on Christmas Day.

"The pilot requested emergency assistance upon arrival," he said.

Security and airline personnel are on edge since the attempted terror attack on Christmas Day, and the law enforcement official said that lesser incidents had been reported on other flights arriving in Detroit, but the incident with the Nigerian man had sparked the most concern.

There were reports that the man detained was also Nigerian. There was no indication he had attempted to cause any physical harm to anyone aboard the flight, or to the airliner, reportedly a Boeing 737.

A law enforcement official tells CBS News correspondent Bob Orr passengers and crew became suspicious after the man locked himself in an airplane bathroom. A search of the plane was being carried out. There was no immediate word of any device being found.

Security on all U.S.-bound flights has been ratcheted up since 23-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab allegedly tried to detonate a bomb on flight 253 just before it arrived in Detroit on Christmas Day.

Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab terror attack/ UPDATE: Another Nigerian man Removed From Same Flight as Christmas Attack TODAY, 12-27 Empty Abdulmutallab, 23, was released from the Ann Arbour hospital and has been moved to a secure locatio

Post by Nama Sun Dec 27, 2009 10:44 pm

Nigerian terror-suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was on Monday discharged from a Detroit hospital where he was being treated for burn injuries, which he sustained in his failed attempt to blow up a US plane mid-air on Friday.

Abdulmutallab, 23, was released from the Ann Arbour hospital and has been moved to a secure location, the US Marshal Service said.

"The only thing I can give right now is that he is being held at a secure location in the eastern district of Michigan," Kevin Pettit, spokesman for the US Marshal Service in Detroit said when asked about Abdulmutallab.

Yesterday Abdulmutallab was charged by the FBI with "willfully" attempting to destroy the Amsterdam-Detroit Northwest Flight 253 with 290 people on board and with placing a destructive device on the aircraft.

The charges were filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in Detroit.

He is expected to make his first court room appearance tomorrow.

Meanwhile the US Attorney Terrence Berg said today that the terror suspect could face more serious charge if indicted by a grand jury.

Berg told the Detroit News that sometimes the charges in the indictment are different or more serious than the complaint, but did not give any details.

"The prosecution team in this case will review the evidence and determine what charges, including possibly any other charges, to ask the grand jury to consider," Berg was quoted as saying by the daily.

The other "suspect" has been released. Authorities searched him, found no evidence of anything that could be made into an explosive device. The reason the man was in the bathroom so long is that he was very sick. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. This was on the Geraldo show last night.

Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab terror attack/ UPDATE: Another Nigerian man Removed From Same Flight as Christmas Attack TODAY, 12-27 Empty Detroit explosive common, easily detectible

Post by Wrapitup Mon Dec 28, 2009 6:42 am

By PAMELA HESS and EILEEN SULLIVAN, Associated Press Writer – Sun Dec 27, 7:52 pm ET

WASHINGTON – The explosive device used by the would-be Detroit bomber contained a widely available — and easily detected — chemical explosive that has a long history of terrorist use, according to government officials and explosive experts.

The chemical — PETN — is small, powerful and appealing to terrorists. The Saudi government said it was used in an assassination attempt on the country's counterterrorism operations chief in August.

It was also a component of the explosive that Richard Reid, the convicted "shoe bomber," used in his 2001 attempt to down an airliner.

PETN was widely used in the plastic explosives terrorists used to blow up airplanes in the 1970s and 1980s.

Investigators say Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab hid an explosive device on his body when he traveled from Amsterdam to Detroit. They say PETN was hidden in a condom or condom-like bag just below his torso.

Abdulmutallab also had a syringe filled with liquid. One law enforcement official said the second part of the explosive concoction used in the Christmas Day incident is still being tested but appears to be a glycol-based liquid explosive. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation.

PETN is the primary ingredient in detonating cords used for industrial explosions and can be collected by scraping the insides of the wire, said James Crippin, a Colorado explosives expert. It's also used in military devices and found in blasting caps. It's the high explosive of choice because it is stable and safe to handle, but it requires a primary explosive to detonate it, he said.

Crippin and law enforcement officials said modern airport screening machines could have detected the chemical. Airport "puffer" machines — the devices that blow air onto a passenger to collect and analyze residues — would probably have detected the powder, as would bomb-sniffing dogs or a hands-on search using a swab.

However, most passengers in airports only go through magnetometers, which detect metal rather than explosives.

Hidden in Abdulmutallab's clothing, the explosive might have also been detected by the full-body imaging scanners now making their way into airports.
But Abdulmutallab did not go through full-body imaging machines in Nigeria or Amsterdam, said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y. King, the top Republican on the Homeland Security Committee, has been briefed on the investigation.

Both airports have body scanners. The Amsterdam airport has had a long reputation for good security, King said, while Nigeria's airports have been more of a concern.

The U.S. provided full-body scanners to all four international airports in Nigeria, according to the State Department. The scanners were installed in March, May and June of 2008.

Abdulmutallab was on a broad U.S. terrorist watch list but he was not designated for special screening measures or placed on a no-fly list because of a dearth of specific information about his activities, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Sunday. She said he was properly screened before getting on the aircraft in Amsterdam. Abdulmutallab has claimed to law enforcement officials that he received training and instructions from al-Qaida operatives in Yemen.

The Saudi Arabia assassination attempt was carried out by a Saudi who was on the country's list of 85 most wanted terrorists. The bomber was believed to have traveled to Yemen to connect with the al-Qaida franchise there. The bomber died in the explosion and is believed to have attached the explosives to his groin or inserted them inside himself.

I cannot relate to the mindset of these people. That's what they get for trying to blow up planes - their groin explodes!!

Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab terror attack/ UPDATE: Another Nigerian man Removed From Same Flight as Christmas Attack TODAY, 12-27 Empty Obama: US intel had info ahead of airliner attack

HONOLULU – President Barack Obama said Tuesday that the intelligence community had bits of information that should have been pieced together that would have triggered "red flags" and possibly prevented the Christmas Day attempted terror attack on a Detroit-bound airliner.

His criticism came as senior U.S. officials told The Associated Press that intelligence authorities now are looking at conversations between the suspect in the failed attack, a 23-year-old Nigerian, and at least one al-Qaida member. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters, said the conversations were vague or coded, but the intelligence community believes that, in hindsight, the communications may have been referring to the Detroit attack. One official said a link between the suspect's planning and al-Qaida's goals was becoming more clear.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that the government had intelligence from Yemen before Christmas that leaders of a branch of al-Qaida there were talking about "a Nigerian" being prepared for a terrorist attack. The newspaper said the information did not include the name of the Nigerian.

The officials who spoke with the AP did not say how these communications with the suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, took place — by Internet, cell phone or another method. Intelligence officials also would not confirm whether those conversations involved Yemen-based radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, but other U.S. government officials said there were initial indications that he was involved.

Al-Awlaki reportedly corresponded by e-mail with Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who is charged with killing 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, on Nov. 5.

"Had this critical information been shared, it could have been compiled with other intelligence, and a fuller, clearer picture of the suspect would have emerged," Obama said in a brief statement to the media. "The warning signs would have triggered red flags, and the suspect would have never been allowed to board that plane for America."

"There was a mix of human and systemic failures that contributed to this potential catastrophic breach of security," the president said.

Officials said Obama chose to make a second statement in as many days because a morning briefing offered him new information in the government's possession about the suspect's activities and thinking, along with al-Qaida's plans.

Obama's statement showed more fire than he had shown previously about the lapses that allowed the bombing attack to take place and came after his homeland security secretary, Janet Napolitano, had to backtrack on an assertion that "the system worked" in the Detroit airliner scare. Some have criticized Obama for not addressing the issue publicly sooner.

An angered Obama called the shortcomings "totally unacceptable" and told reporters traveling with him on vacation here that he wanted a preliminary report by Thursday on what went wrong on Christmas Day, when the suspect carried explosives onto a flight from Amsterdam despite the fact the suspect had possible ties to al-Qaida.

It will take weeks for a more comprehensive investigation into what allowed the 23-year-old Nigerian to board the airplane he is accused of trying to blow up with more than 300 people aboard. Law enforcement officials believe the suspect tried to ignite a two-part concoction of the high explosive PETN and possibly a glycol-based liquid explosive, setting off popping, smoke and some fire but no deadly detonation. Abdulmutallab, charged with trying to destroy an aircraft, is being held at the federal prison in Milan, Mich.

Obama, interrupting his vacation to address the airliner attack, said, "It's essential that we diagnose the problems quickly."

"There were bits of information available within the intelligence community that could have — and should have — been pieced together," he said.

Abdulmutallab had been placed in one government advisory system, but never made it onto more restrictive lists that would have caught the attention of U.S. counterterrorist screeners, despite his father's warnings to U.S. Embassy officials in Nigeria last month. Those warnings also did not result in Abdulmutallab's U.S. visa being revoked.

The CIA said it worked with embassy officials to make sure that Abdulmutallab's name made it into the government's database of suspected terrorists and noted his potential extremist connections in Yemen. The CIA also said it forwarded that information to the National Counterterrorism Center.

"We learned of him in November, when his father came to the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria and sought help in finding him. We did not have his name before then," CIA spokesman George Little said.

One U.S. intelligence official said the father's statement alone would not have — on its own — stopped the attack.

"Abdulmutallab's father didn't say his son was a terrorist, let alone planning an attack," the official said. "I'm not aware of some magic piece of intelligence that suddenly would have flagged this guy — whose name nobody even had until November — as a killer en route to America, let alone something that anybody withheld."

Officials in Yemen were investigating whether Abdulmutallab spent time with al-Qaida militants there during the months leading up to the botched bombing attack.

Administrators, teachers and fellow students at the San'a Institute for the Arabic Language, where Abdulmutallab had enrolled to study Arabic, told The Associated Press that he attended school for only the Mulsim holy month of Ramadan, which began in late August. That has raised questions about what he did during the rest of his stay, which continued into December.

They also said he was not openly extremist, though he expressed anger over Israel's actions against Palestinians in Gaza.

Officials also noted Tuesday that Amsterdam, where Abdulmutallab boarded his flight to Detroit, is one of nine locations where U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials are stationed to do additional screening on U.S.-bound passengers who have been flagged as a potential risk.

But it is unlikely Abdulmutallab would have been flagged because the Customs and Border Patrol officers do not routinely screen all passengers against the names of individuals on the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment database, known as TIDE, which was the only place that Abdulmutallab was listed.

The government put in place enhanced screening procedures for passengers after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington to catch potential terrorists. On U.S.-bound flights from overseas, CBP checks passenger names against some lists of potential terrorists, but not against all information the government keeps.

On top of that, airport security equipment did not detect the bomb-making devices and materials Abdulmutallab is accused of carrying on board the Northwest Airlines flight.

Obama said many things went right after the incident, with passengers and the flight crew subduing the man and government officials working quickly to increase security. He singled out Napolitano, backing her much-criticized comments that the attempted terror attack showed the aviation security system worked.

"As Secretary Napolitano has said, once the suspect attempted to take down Flight 253, after his attempt, it's clear that passengers and crew, our homeland security systems, and our aviation security took all appropriate actions," Obama said.

Napolitano received so much criticism for her Sunday talk show remarks that she did another round of interviews the following day to say the system did not work in preventing Abdulmutallab from getting on the plane with a bomb. But, she said, the response system did work after the man was subdued. She contends her remarks were taken out of context.

Meanwhile, Napolitano asked to meet with security and counterterrorism experts, including at least two former Bush administration officials, according to a person familiar with the meetings. On Tuesday, she met with former Bush homeland security adviser Fran Townsend and former DHS undersecretary for policy Stewart Baker, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was not on the secretary's public schedule.

Republicans are questioning Napolitano's judgment and a few have called for her resignation. The White House says her job is safe.

However, Obama said: "What's also clear is this: When our government has information on a known extremist and that information is not shared and acted upon as it should have been ... a systemic failure has occurred. And I consider that totally unacceptable."
