Be a LBTH Advocate:

Advocates help in many ways:

* Being a political advocate
* Fundraising
* Coordinating with media and other advocates

Fundraising

NCMA is challenging 1,000 participants to pledge $12.50 per month for 12 months, or to pledge a one time gift of $150. All donations are 100% tax deductible and will allow LBTH to both continue and expand services that benefit the families of missing adults. (Please note: This agency does not charge the families of the missing for services. We rely entirely upon corporate donations, grants and gifts from individuals like you. All donations are tax deductible.)

Become a leader We are building our grass roots organization and are looking for leaders in every state. The leader would communicate with local media and state representatives on behalf of LBTH. Please email advocacy@missingadults.org if you are interested. We will work with all advocates to help bring awareness to your loved one's case and their fundraising page.
Political Advocacy

Become an advocate by contacting your senators and encouraging others to do the same.

Locate your senators
select your state on the top right of www.senate.gov and you will be shown a link to your senator's web sites, their address, phone number, and a web form link to use for emailing your senators. On their web site you will find a contact link which should show you their state office addresses, fax numbers, and telephone numbers.

Are your senators already sponsoring or co-sponsoring The Silver Alert Act (S.557 and H.R.632)?
When you write your senator, urge them to become a cosponsor if they are not already. If they are already the sponsor or co-sponsor, write them and thank them. You can urge a cosponsor to speak with the subcommittee members to move the bill through subcommittee and back to the floor for a vote.

Ask your senators to amend the bill
The version of Kristen's Act Reauthorization included language recognizing LBTH as the agency established to provide these services. This language has been removed in this year's legislation. Tell your senator to support amending H.R.632 to resemble the original version which can be found as H.R.423 in the 110th congress. You may want to print this bill and mail it to them.

Methods of contacting your representative listed from most effective to least effective.

* In-person lobby visits from constituents
* Contact from a person who represents many people
* Individualized postal letters
* Individualized email message
* Individualized faxes
* Phone calls
* Visit from a lobbyist

We recommend a combination approach:

1. Start with a phone call, get the staff members name.
2. Immediately follow up with a letter, email or fax and thank them for their time on the phone. A letter will allow you to enclose additional information such as missing person's posters in your area, the CEO message, and the original bill showing the amendment you want. .
3. Schedule an in person meeting to discuss the issue further. Learn more about making a visit.

When you contact your representative, there are some main points to get across to them

* You support LBTH and Kristen's Act Reauthorization, now part of the Silver Alert Act
* You want the bill amended to resemble the original version which can be found as H.R.423 in the 110th congress in particular to add back the recognition given to LBTH.
* Ask them to cosponsor the bill.
* Ask to hear back with the position they take and what they will do to help if they support the bill.

Tips when writing your senators

* Keep the message short.
* Make the message personalized. If you are using an example letter, change it as much as possible.
* Be specific and polite on what you want them to do. Include the bill number and name.
* Identify yourself as a constituent and include your address.
* When using postal mail, write to your local office. Postal mail to DC has long delays.
* Tell a story: Who are you? Have you lost someone? Are you in Law Enforcement? Enclose information such as missing person's posters in your area and the original bill showing the amendment you want.
