Normal Man of interest in Somer Thompson slaying had bizarre upbringing Jarred Harrell and an older sister bounced between mother and father

Post by Nama on Thu Feb 18, 2010 11:48 am

Loretta Harrell answered a knock at her ranch-style home in the deep Mississippi woods six weeks ago to find two strangers standing outside.

The men told Harrell they were FBI agents and asked to speak to her husband about his son, Jarred. Startled, Jarred’s stepmother shut and locked the door and called for her husband, a local prison guard.

It had been six years since Howard Harrell had seen Jarred at the end of a bitter, bizarre custody battle that found the two hugging on the steps of the Lauderdale County courthouse. They crossed paths twice more, but never spoke, Howard Harrell told the Times-Union Tuesday.

The FBI agents told Harrell that Jarred wasn’t cooperating with a criminal investigation in Florida, where he’d spent time with his birth mother and her newest husband. They said Jarred fit a profile, but didn’t say of what, and asked his father for a DNA sample.

Harrell let one of the men swab the inside of his cheeks and watched them walk out a short time later. They left behind plenty of questions.

Harrell got some answers last week in a frantic phone call from his daughter in Jacksonville. Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler had just announced that Jarred, 24, was arrested in Meridian, Miss., on child-pornography charges. Beseler also identified the unemployed laborer as a man of interest in the Oct. 19 disappearance and slaying of 7-year-old Somer Thompson.

Harrell and his wife said they remain stunned by the news, which they’ve seen repeated on local TV.

“I sure don’t see him doing none of that,” said Harrell, 51.

“I’m really still standing with my mouth open,” said his wife, 52.

Jarred remains this morning in an isolation cell in a Meridian jail while fighting extradition back to Florida. Authorities said they expect him to be returned as early as next week.

Meanwhile, 125 miles to the south in the two-stoplight town of Lucedale, a family torn apart years earlier in a bitter dispute wonders what’s next.

The past

Mississippi court records describe a bizarre series of events that found Jarred and his sister bounced between their mother and Harrell for parts of their young lives.

Howard and Annis Harrell were married in Lucedale in October 1979. Their daughter was born seven months later, while Jarred was born in July 1985, the records show.

The couple divorced a year later and Annis got custody of the children. Harrell got them back three years later following the events outlined in a judge’s 1990 order in the case.

Shortly before the Harrells separated, she was working as a secretary for Joe Newman, a married, eccentric local inventor. The two became lovers with the knowledge of Newman’s wife, while Annis still had custody of the children, the judge’s order states.

In February 1989, Newman publicized what the order states is a 17-page “news release” in which he announced he was married not only to his wife, but to Annis Harrell and her 8-year-old daughter. The order does not indicate why the release was issued or how, but the order says Newman described himself as a prophet of God and that his wife believed him, among other things.

Alerted to the public statements, state child welfare officials sought to take the children from their mother, who officially married Newman in September 1989. During a court hearing in the custody matter, Newman said his marriage to the daughter was spiritual, not sexual, and that he would debate with God whether to consummate the marriage, the order states.

The judge said he didn’t doubt the depth of the convictions of either Newman or Annis, but he ordered the children removed from their home. The girl went immediately with her father. Jarred, then 3, stayed with Annis’ mother until also moving in with Harrell.

Annis divorced Newman and tried to get her children back, though a judge called her attempts manipulative and refused. But in 1993 about five years after Harrell got the children, he gave them back.

“You know how kids are; they want to be with their momma,” Harrell said.

Annis did not respond to several interview attempts by the Times-Union.

Harrell said he almost immediately lost touch with the children. He said he didn’t see them for eight years until their mother was summoned to court in Lucedale in 2003 as he sought to stop paying child support. Annis had earlier remarried and left town before returning some time later. Jarred was now 18, his sister 23.

After the hearing, which resulted in the end of the payments, Harrell embraced the children on the courthouse steps before they parted.

While he stayed in touch with his daughter, Harrell said he only saw Jarred two other times before his mug shot appeared last week on their local news. On both occasions, at a local Walmart and at the birth of his niece, Harrell said Jarred inexplicably turned away from him without speaking.

The future

Howard Harrell said he has no plans to reach out to Jarred as he sits in jail. He said he wonders, however, whether Jarred is being railroaded by authorities eager to solve Somer Thompson’s slaying.

Sheriff Beseler said the child-pornography charges stem from graphic images former Orange Park roommates found on Jarred’s laptop and computer discs, which they turned over to police.

Beseler has refused to say what evidence exists that might link Harrell to Somer, who used to walk home from school passed a home where Jarred was known to stay. The home, now unoccupied, is owned by a man now married to Jarred’s mother.

“They’re just tying to find somebody to put it on,” Howard Harrell said.

He said there’s one more thing he can’t get off his mind: He’s not really certain if Jarred is even his son.

Harrell said Jarred’s mother always insisted he is the father and court documents link them as father and son. But Harrell’s current wife said the two men look nothing alike. And Harrell, still distrusting of Jarred’s mother, said he has his doubts. Not that he’s ready to disown Jarred yet.

“I don’t have no other choice,” Harrell said. “I raised him for five years.”

Harrell said if anything comes from the ongoing criminal investigation, it may be his chance to get an answer. Along with the DNA sample he gave to the FBI, Harrell said he has been told his son changed his mind and gave his own sample some time later.

Harrell said he hopes another stranger or two will come knocking on his door again and let him know.

kinda off topic...WOW, I know of that guy Joseph Newman..he was given lots of respect as an inventor for a while, he built what he purported to be an energy machine that put out more power than put in and many, many important, intelligent, educated people believed in it. He was even on Johnny Carson explaining it. Then suddenly he seemed to go nuts (or maybe he had kept it hidden for a while??)....he wrote the above mentioned paper and....?

Normal National case lands in Meridian

Post by Nama on Thu Feb 18, 2010 11:28 pm

Sitting on either ends of a dark brown, leather sofa Larenda Mingledorff and Kriss Mizelle shared bewildered looks late Friday afternoon while outside a silent snow fell.

On Thursday the two friends who share a house at 1520 22nd Avenue Heights in Meridian were thrust into a very serious, but surreal situation, when federal agents from the FBI and US Marshals Office abruptly showed up on the spacious porch of their large country style home.

"No they were inside the house!" said Mingledorff. "I got a call that said there were cops in and around the house. I was shocked!"

The shock hasn't worn off.

Thursday afternoon Mizelle's nephew, Jarred Mitchell Harrell, was arrested at an unknown location in Meridian and charged with 29 counts of possession of child pornography. Mizelle said Harrell, 24, had come to Meridian to visit her and ended up staying. She said he had been living in the home for nearly three weeks. Upon learning why her nephew was being arrested and, additionally, what he was being implicated for in Florida in regards to the kidnapping and death of seven-year old Somer Thompson of Orange Park, Florida, Mizelle couldn't believe it.

"I just refuse to believe he would do something like this," said Mizelle as she looked at Mingledorff. "There was nothing to indicate he had anything to do with what they said. I still have anxiety attacks just thinking about it."

According to the affidavit for his arrest from the Clay County Sheriff's Office, multiple items of child pornography — including graphic photos and videos of children between the ages of 6-13 — were discovered on his computer after a search of his former home in Orange Park, Fla., in August of 2009.

Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said Harrell has not been charged in the death of Thompson — but he's wanted in connection with the case. The arrest warrant said he was being held on $1 million bond. Harrell is currently held in the Lauderdale County Detention Facility. According to Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie, Harrell is fighting extradition back to Florida. Sollie said Friday afternoon officials in Florida will have to file documentation so a governor's warrant for Harrell's arrest can be issued. At that point Harrell will be returned to Florida to face the charges against him.

Mizelle said she'd been trying to help her nephew since he showed up at her home in Meridian.

"He didn't have a job so I took him to the employment office to sign up," said Mizelle. "He took his resume to various businesses to apply for jobs. His name and other identification was plastered everywhere."

Mingledorff said contrary to rumors, Harrell didn't work for Queen City Recycling in Meridian of which she is the manager. He ran errands for her and did yard work to earn a few dollars to go out to eat and the mall, of which he did regularly. But he was not an employee of the business, she said.

According to Harrell's arrest report, in August he was kicked out of an Orange Park apartment after a roommate thought he had stolen a cell phone. Harrell left behind a computer, and the roommates said they searched it because they thought Harrell had been using it to look at child porn, the report said. The roommates said they did find porn involving young girls and turned the computer and discs over to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office on Aug. 10, 2009. The materials were sent to state investigators, who confirmed the contents.

Again Mizelle came to Harrell's defense saying he didn't act strange or try to hide anything while staying with her.

"I sat at his computer with him while he built a Web site for me," Mizelle said. "There was nothing I could see on it that would indicate anything sinister or illegal. He didn't seem nervous while I was there. It just doesn't add up to me."

At the time of the investigation in Thompson's death, Mizelle said Harrell, along with everyone else in the neighborhood Thompson, and for a short time, Harrell himself lived in, submitted DNA samples to authorities. If, in her mind, her nephew was connected to the little girl's disappearance and murder in October 2009, then a warrant would have already been issued.

Florida authorities said Harrell is a "person of interest" in the case.

"Was it on his computer? Yes." said Mizelle. "But there were two other people living with him who had access to it. And if he did have something like that on the computer why in the world would he leave it behind? It just doesn't add up."

During the raid Thursday, agents confiscated Harrell's computer and the one belonging to Mingledorff. Anything that could connect to the Internet was taken away.

Mizelle described Harrell as an ordinary boy. He had girlfriends, according to her. She declined to call him a man because she saw in him a very boyish kind of behavior despite his age. She said he was just lazy and easy going like most guys in their early 20s. And Mizelle was quick to defend her entire family, not just Harrell.

"We are not trash!" she said emphatically. "I'm proud of my family and I hate that his name and face is all over the news and that my sister and her family has to put up with this stigma now."

A task force has been set up in Florida to deal with this case. Authorities have checked into thousands of tips in the nearly four months since Thompson's death.

Before the arrest was announced, the girl's mother, Diena Thompson, said she didn't want to get her hopes up that a break had been made in the case.

"I'm not speculating on anything. I don't want to get my hopes up and I don't want to get my hopes down," she told The Florida Times-Union. "I'm going to put my faith in God."

Mizelle, still sitting on the sofa, said this latest ordeal may be over for her but she said her sister and family will have to endure weeks, maybe months more of scrutiny.

"It just infuriates me this is happening," Mizelle said..

Normal Ex-stepfather says Harrell possessed child porn as teen

Post by Nama on Thu Feb 18, 2010 11:38 pm

Jarred Harrell’s lust for child pornography began as a teenager in Mississippi, said a stepfather who did nothing after finding a disc of graphic material Harrell locked in a tackle box.

After being told Friday of Harrell’s arrest on child pornography charges and being linked to Somer Thompson’s slaying, Richard Wharton said he felt ashamed he didn’t act on his find eight years earlier.

“I’m not proud of what I did,” said Wharton, 65, who was married to Harrell’s mother for 15 years before divorcing in 2005.

Wharton said he married Harrell’s mother, Annis, when Harrell was 5 years old and the two were living in Lucedale, a small town in southeastern Mississippi. Harrell struggled with the pressures of grade school and had to be home-schooled for several years, Wharton said in a telephone interview from his home in Alabaster, Ala.

Harrell got caught stealing when he was 13, but was otherwise a quiet, church-going teen who enjoyed being with friends, Wharton said.

Three years later, Wharton learned his 16-year-old stepson had another interest.

Wharton said he was curious about what Harrell kept in a locked tackle box in his bedroom closet, so one day he took off the hinges and pulled out one of several discs. He loaded the disc onto a computer and found pornographic images of young girls, some no older than 5 or 6. They were the same ages of some of the girls found on the Clay County discs, the arrest warrant said.

Wharton said he asked Harrell’s mother whether she thought the teen had a problem with pornography and she said no. Wharton said he didn’t tell her about his find and put the discs back in the box, assuming it was a passing phase.

“I thought it was an age thing,” Wharton said.

Wharton said he never found his stepson with pornographic material again. He said Harrell got into more minor trouble by shoplifting in his late teens, but otherwise stayed out of trouble.

“He’s never been a violent kid,” Wharton said.

Wharton, who last spoke to Harrell just after divorcing his mother in 2005, said he was disturbed by the new child pornography charges because of his stepson’s past. But he said he doesn’t believe Harrell had anything to do with Somer’s death.

“I have a hard time with the murder thing,” Wharton said.

Messages left by the Times-Union with Harrell’s mother on her cell phone and Facebook page and his current stepfather’s cell phone were not returned. Sheriff Billy Sollie, who supervises the Meridian jail where Harrell is being held, declined a request by the Times-Union to interview Harrell.

Harrell’s aunt, Kriss Mizelle, told the Meridian (Miss.) Star Friday that Harrell had been living with her for about 2 1/2 weeks before his arrest. Mizelle said he was looking for work and not trying to hide from police.

Authorities seized Harrell’s computer and his aunt’s computer during the arrest in the town of about 40,000 people in eastern Mississippi. She described him as a “normal, lazy guy” incapable of what he’s charged with or linked to.

“This just blows my mind,” said Mizelle.

Rod and Lisa Buchanan, a Middleburg couple who are friends with Harrell and his family, described him as a reclusive who enjoyed playing computer games. They also said he had trouble keeping some jobs.

Harrell was fired as cook at the Fleming Island eatery Beauty and the Beef last summer because he had a quick temper, the restaurant’s manager, Corey Secrest, said Friday.

Secrest said Harrell cooked for about 2 1/2 months and had a reputation for being a hard worker. But he got fired for “flipping out” on-duty, Secrest said. He added that he never witnessed the episodes, but he said the owner complained when Harrell would snap.

“He couldn’t straighten his act up,” said Secrest, 24. The owner could not be reached to comment.

The Buchanans said Harrell also worked briefly at the Orange Park Mall’s food court, but they weren’t sure where or why he stopped.

Harrell, who studied computers while attending a Mississippi junior college, was turned down for an information technology job by Jacksonville City Hall in 2006 after someone more qualified was hired, city spokeswoman Misty Skipper said.

Harrell’s resume submitted to the city lists jobs as a salesman, pizza delivery man and cashier in Mississippi from 2001 to 2005.

As for his criminal background, Florida records show one arrest in 2007 for possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana in Jacksonville. He has no arrests in Mississippi.

BJ in OR wrote:...According to arresting documents, a cluster of child pornography images and video was found on several CDs and a computer Harrell used when he lived with roommates at a home in Orange Park, Fla, in August. The computer, which had a filed called "Toddler Insertion," held "a large amount of child erotica and also child pornography," documents said.

The roommates, who discovered the files, turned the computer over to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office on Aug. 10, two months before Thompson disappeared. If he had been arrested soon, he wouldn't have killed Somer. Just MHO. BJ

I'm really struggling with the fact that LE had this in their hands for 2 months before the murder. The horrible and senseless death of this beautiful young life could have been prevented if they had followed through on information already known. Glad they found who appears to be the murderer but very angry they didn't arrest him before he had the chance to murder poor Somer.

Yes, thanks for the info, BJ!

It is all very sad, but also helps me to understand how this "monster" was created. Although I completely hold Jared Harrell responsible for the murder of Somer Thompson (if this is proved in court), I can also see how his "mixed up" upbringing contributed to the person he has become. I know that not every child who comes from a dysfunctional family turns out this bad, but we just never know which one will go "off the deep end". As a parent myself (of a 10 year old boy), I can see the importance of doing my best to be a good role model (ie. to practice what I preach), and to give him the spiritual & moral guidance that he needs to help him become a responsible & decent adult one day. butterfly

Jarred Harrell, the man named as a person of interest in the killing of 7-year-old Orange Park girl Somer Thompson, is headed back to Clay County.
Harrell, 24, who is facing 29 counts of possession of child pornography, was released from the jail in Lauderdale County, Miss., where he was held since his arrest by federal agents two weeks ago.
A warrant signed by the Mississippi governor over the weekend gives permission to Clay County deputies to go get Harrell and take him back to Florida. Channel 4's Jennifer Bauer and Matt James followed the three-vehicle caravan carrying Harrel until she was blocked by Lauderdale County deputies.

For security reasons, multiple cars and many officers are expected to make the nine-hour trip to Green Cove Springs, Fla.

A three-vehicle caravan believed to be carrying Jared Harrell back to Clay County left Meridian, Miss., mid-morning on Tuesday.
The Clay County Sheriff's Office said Monday it would not reveal the exact time and location of when and where Harrell's extradition will take place.
Given that he left Meridian mid-morning Tuesday, it is expected Harrell will make a first appearance on the child pornography charges at the Clay County Courthouse Wednesday morning.
While Harrell faces no charges in connection with Somer Thompson's death, investigators said he lived for a time in a house on Gano Avenue, a few doors down from where Somer was last seen alive in October.
Her body was found two days later in a Charlton County, Ga., landfill where Orange Park trash is dumped.
"I don't think the community will ever be quite the same," said Sharon Galloway, who lives across the street from the Thompson home. "I think everybody wants to have some kind of end to this. I just hope that it brings some kind of peace to people."

I, for one, am very glad to hear this news! Although my previous post may have sounded sympathetic towards him, I am all behind him being held accountable for his actions. And from the sounds of it, he may soon be charged in Somer Thompson's death. I am sure this is "good news" for Somer's family!!

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. -- A man who is a person of interest in the slaying of a 7-year-old girl has been extradited from Mississippi to Florida.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that Jarred Mitchell Harrell has been booked into jail and might appear in court Wednesday.

Harrell was arrested Feb. 11 in Meridian, Miss., and faces 29 counts of possession of child pornography. Last week, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist asked Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour to extradite Harrell.

Authorities say Harrell is wanted for questioning in the death of Somer Thompson, whose body was found in a south Georgia landfill two days after she disappeared while walking home from school.

Normal Transcript: Jarred Harrell's jailhouse calls with his mother while in Mississippi

Post by Nama on Wed Feb 24, 2010 3:30 pm

Below is the text of two phone calls made by Jarred Harrell to his mother, Annis Dailey, while Harrell was being held in the Lauderdale County (Miss.) jail. Click here to read the full Jarred Harrell story on Jacksonville.com

FIRST CALL:

The first call was made a few days after Harrell’s Feb. 11 arrest in Meridian, Miss., on a child pornography warrant issued in Clay County. The call lasts about 5 ½ minutes.

Harrell: Hey

Dailey: Hey honey, how are you doing?

Harrell: Ah, holding in there I guess.

Dailey: Do what?

Harrell: I guess I’m holding in there.

Dailey: That’s good. That’s good. (Inaudible) you have lots of time on your hands, just work out.

Harrell: Everybody’s kinda telling me I look stressed.

Dailey: You have to talk a little louder. I can’t hear you.

Harrell: (Inaudible) My voice is kinda stressed. That’s how, literally, I think the stress is killing me.

Dailey: Well, trust me, we’ve…you would not believe everything here. We’re right in there with you.

Harrell: I know, I’m sorry.

Dailey: No, no, no. It’s not, no, it’s not all you. Trust me, it’s going to get a lot uglier for them before it’s over with, trust me.

Harrell: Well, I’ve only got a couple of minutes.

Dailey: That’s fine. Ok, do you have, in the morning do you have a court appearance?

Harrell: No, I’m still in Mississippi.

Dailey: I understand, but you’re still in booking. You’re still in holding.

Harrell: Yeah, still in holding. I have to be extradited. They can take as long as up to 60 days.

Dailey: I understand, but trust me, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Harrell: I’ve already heard them talking. They’re going to come get me like the second of next month.

Dailey: Well, people say a lot of things. Unless you hear it from me or you hear it from an appointed attorney…

Harrell: I can’t get an attorney (inaudible). The bail is set at like seven million and three dollars.

Dailey: Well, it’s one million, but anyway.

Harrell: The judge (inaudible).

Dailey: Anyway, here’s what you do. You requested an attorney right?

Harrell: I requested an attorney, yeah. They never gave me one.

Dailey: OK. Here’s what’s going to happen. You should have a court appearance in the morning because they have to officially book you. You’ve never even went before the judge yet.

Harrell: No I haven’t. They never told me anything about it.

Dailey: OK. It was bad weather Friday. They couldn’t do it. They had to postpone it until Tuesday. Which is not a bad thing with all the press and everything.

Harrell: I only get one phone call.

Dailey: OK, listen to me. Tell them that you want an attorney; are you going to have an attorney that you requested in the morning. Because you have to have a public defender before you go to court in the morning for your appearance.

Harrell: OK.

Dailey: And I’m going to call the front office and just make sure that I tell them the same thing. You need to ask them, where’s my attorney? The other thing is that you don’t just get one phone call. You can call me whenever you want to.

Harrell: Well, no, that wasn’t their instruction. I’ve been in solitary, like by myself.

Dailey: I understand.

Harrell: One phone call.

Dailey: Well, I’m telling you different. If you want to call again, then you ask them to let you make a phone call because they’re supposed to let you do that and I will follow through on that.

Harrell: I’ve already asked (inaudible)

Dailey: Anyway. I will be there in the morning to make..I’m going to call, you need to ask them when is my court appearance and when do I get to talk to my attorney. Those are the two things you have to keep asking them. OK.

Harrell: OK.

Dailey: And until then, let’s see, what did Mitchell say. Keep your chin up, keep you mouth shut and get an attorney.

Harrell: I’m trying. Just don’t believe anything (inaudible)

Dailey: Honey, I don’t believe anything, trust me. And the thing is, is that I’m your alibi, so I have to be real careful, you know, what I say to anybody. We’re making no comments to any of the news. The little girl’s mother is making no comments. And so they’re trying to pull from everything else that they can. And it’s making them look like idiots. So the longer you’re there, trust me, the better it is. It’s tough, I know. But just hang in there. OK?

Harrell: All right.

Dailey: And trust me we’ve got a whole group of people here that’s doing everything we can, you know, on that end. And that’s pretty far reaching. So you’ve just got to trust me.

Harrell: You all are the only (inaudible)

Dailey: Trust me, it’s all..it’ll have to play out. But it’s just time. And, so what I said is just, if you get bored or something, just, perfect time to work out. So just exercise and keep your head on your shoulders. But I will, I’m driving through and I’ll be there in the morning. And um, I don’t know if you’ll see me, but I’ll be there.

Harrell: (Inaudible)

Dailey: But you have to ask them, when you get off the phone, you ask them do I have a court appearance in the morning? What time? And where is the attorney that I requested?

Harrell: OK.

Dailey: Because you have rights to those. Definite rights to those. You have those.

Harrell: I thought I had to be extradited first.

Dailey: No, no. Any time you go before a judge you have to have an attorney. And I’m going to be calling them asking the same thing.

Call Ends

SECOND CALL:

The second call was made shortly after the first call, but it’s unclear when. The call lasts slightly less than three minutes.

Harrell: Hey.

Dailey: Hey honey.

Harrell: All right. Did you hear what’s going on now?

Dailey: No, I haven’t heard anything.

Harrell: When they originally brought me in…

Dailey: Right.

Harrell: They didn’t sign any of the paperwork. They forgot to sign it.

Dailey: They forgot to sign any of the paperwork?

Harrell: And I didn’t sign a single thing when I came in, so this whole time I’ve been here, I’ve been arrested for nothing from no one, pretty much(inaudible)

Dailey: So what are they doing?

Harrell: They’re still holding me for the marshals.

Dailey: What does that mean?

Harrell: And, she said that they can’t legally, you know, legally...

Dailey: Have you go before the judge?

Harrell: Can’t get me an attorney.

Dailey: They can’t get you an attorney?

Harrell: Correct.

Dailey: And they can’t have you go before the judge?

Harrell: Correct.

Dailey: Because they didn’t sign the paperwork. So you’re just sitting there waiting for…

Harrell: I’ve been arrested for nothing (inaudible) because it’s a piece of paper with the judge’s signature on it. That’s all it is.

Dailey: Well who has to sign the paperwork?

Normal Clay judge orders Jarred Harrell held in child-porn case Harrell extradited from Mississippi jail; faces Somer Thompson questions

Post by Nama on Wed Feb 24, 2010 3:32 pm

Jarred Mitchell Harrell appeared briefly this morning before a Clay County judge via closed-circuit television and was ordered held on $1 million bail on 29 counts of child pornography pending his arraignment.

Harrell, 24, was appointed a public defender and returned to the Clay County jail. His arraignment date was set for March 10.

Harrell has been named by Sheriff Rick Beseler as a person on interest in the Oct. 19 Somer Thompson slaying, but he has not been charged in that case. He was extradited back to Clay County from Meridian, Miss., where he was arrested Feb. 11 in the child-pornography case.

The Times-Union has obtained phone calls between Harrell and his mother Annis Daley from the Lauderdale County Jail made while Harrell was being held prior to his extradition to Clay County. The calls include statements by Harrell's mother that she can serve as his alibi in the police investigation and she urges him not to cooperate with investigators.

A three-vehicle police caravan arrived at the jail in Green Cove Springs with Harrell early this morning.

Fourteen other jail inmates appeared before County Judge Richard Townsend before Harrell. The jail room emptied of the others, Harrell walked in at 8:05 a.m. dressed in a gray-and-white-striped uniform and stood in handcuffs before a lectern as public defender Kate Bedell stood at his side.

Townsend said he found there was probable cause to hold Harrell on the child-pornography warrant issued Feb. 11. Harrell said nothing other than "Yes, sir," at one point during the hearing, which lasted about a minute.

The only spectator inside the courtroom was Ann Dugger, executive director of The Justice Coalition, a local victims advocate organization. Dugger said she appeared on behalf of Somer's mother, Diena Thompson.

"My prayer is that if Jarred Harrell is responsible for this crime [Somer's slaying], may he get the punishment to the fullest extent of the law," Dugger said.

About a dozen motorcycle riders parked their bikes across from the courthouse, hung signs called for "Justice for Somer" and waved to motorists as they passed by honking. A member of the group said they are friends of Somer's mother and showed up to support her.

"We want to make sure everybody hasn't forgotten," said Vince Webster, 49, of Green Cove Springs. "We've been supporting Diena and her family since day one and that's what it's all about here this morning. We want justice."

The child-pornography charges against Harrell stem from graphic images his former roommates turned over to police in August after they found them on his laptop and computer discs.

In announcing those charges Feb. 11, Beseler also identified Harrell as a man of interest in the Oct. 19 disappearance and slaying of Somer, 7. When she disappeared walking home from school on Gano Avenue, friends of Harrell's family said he'd been spending time at his mother's home on the same route.

Beseler hadn't discussed evidence in that case, but a Times-Union interview with Harrell's father indicates investigators are relying in part on DNA.

WTF "I'm your alibi, remember?" OMG! What kind of mother is this? We all want to believe our babies are perfect and can do no evil, but aren't mothers also supposed to want to make sure their children are not a threat to society? Aren't mothers supposed to want to get their children the help they need?--and I don't mean the type of help that this mother is providing. I can understand complete denial. I could hear a mother saying "My son did not do this. He would never harm anyone." I don't know, maybe the mother feels guilty for not getting him the help he needed when she still had a chance (if she even knew)--not that it definitely would have made a difference, but this just seems messed up!

A good mother grabs her son by the scruff of the neck and marches him to the appropriate person to confess his sin and then to wherever he can get the help he needs. How many mothers have we run across that have the same attitude as this mother? She wouldn't feel this way if she or her son were the victim. He had a screwed up childhood and his mother may feel guilty, but that's no reason the "be his alibi" and try to keep him free to offend again. She's as twisted as he is!

Dailey: No, no, no. It’s not, no, it’s not all you. Trust me, it’s going to get a lot uglier for them before it’s over with, trust me.

Who is she talking about here? Withpurpose, I think she did know about this. I read a statement from one of his stepfathers who found a tacklebox full of porn cds/tapes(?) and asked the mother if she thought it was a problem. She replied, no.
Yes, BJ a real mother with her child's best interest does just what you said, by the nape of the neck and swift kick in the pants.

I agree, Laga, BJ, withpurpose, with all your thoughts, but does anyone else think as I do that, basically, most mothers and wives have been too willing to take the attitude that "boys will be boys" with all such things for too long? They have seemed to me to view this porn matter as a harmless "guy thing" and haven't we even been advised in the last few decades by psychologists that this is a therapeutic tool for partners to use? Withpurpose, This was from another news article. It looks like you have an echo! :lol!:

Mother: "No, no, no, it's not all you. Trust me. It's gonna get a lot uglier for them before it's over with. Trust me."
It's not clear who Dailey was referring to in that statement.
In another part of the conversation, Dailey talked about being her son's alibi.

Mother: "Keep your chin up, keep your mouth shut and get an attorney."
Harrell: "I'm trying. Just don't believe anything."
Mother: "Honey, I don't believe anything. Trust me. The thing is I'm your alibi.

I agree I think so many have been sensitized to the issue of porn. I hear things like it's better that he looks at it or watches it and doesn't do it. Problem is (not the only problem with it obviously), eventually it is probably going to lead to doing or seeking the things they've seen. Kind of like drugs, it takes more to get the same effect.

Normal new counts including child molestation

Post by Nama on Wed Feb 24, 2010 8:25 pm

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- More charges have been added against the person of interest in the Somer Thompson case.

Today, the Clay County Sheriff's Office added two more charges against Jarred Harrell: 12 counts of production of child pornography and molestation of the child involved.

Harrell was arrested in Mississippi initially on 29 counts of child pornography from Clay County. He was extradited to Clay County and arrived this morning.

Mary Justino with the Clay County Sheriff's Office said these charges are "even more serious than the possession of child pornography charges he already faces."

The new charges are in no way related to Somer Thompson. Harrell will be back in court tomorrow for a first appearance on these new charges. He is now being held with no bond.

Normal Harrell Faces Child Molestation Charges

Post by Nama on Wed Feb 24, 2010 8:32 pm

Jarred Harrell, the man named as a person of interest in the death of 7-year-old Orange Park girl Somer Thompson, is now facing additional charges involving the production of child pornography and molestation of a child.
The Clay County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday afternoon Harrell is accused of 12 counts that represent 12 separate images of a child. The sheriff's office said these new charges "are even more serious than the possession of child pornography charges he already faces" and "do not involve Somer Thompson."
Harrell is now being held on no bond and will have another first appearance Thursday morning at 7:45.
Harrell appeared Wednesday before a Clay County judge on child pornography charges for the first time. He made his first court appearance via closed-circuit television about 8 a.m. After a brief hearing, Harrell's initial bond was set at $1 million and his arraignment set for March 10.
Harrell, 24, who was already facing 29 counts of possession of child pornography, was held in jail in Lauderdale County, Miss., since his arrest by federal agents two weeks ago. He was released to Clay County deputies on Tuesday morning and was booked into the Clay County jail early Wednesday morning.
The court appearance lasted only a few minutes and Harrell said little during the hearing. When asked if he understood the charges against him, Harrell said, "Yes, sir."

Normal New charges

Post by Nama on Thu Feb 25, 2010 12:44 am

The new charges involve the production of a dozen images of child pornography and the molestation of that child, an arrest report said. The charges are lewd and lascivious molestation of a child younger than 12 years old and 12 counts of producing/promoting a sexual performance by a child.

Details such as the sex and age of the child and the time frame were not available in the redacted arrest warrant, which was served on Harrell in jail Wednesday.

"These charges are the result of the ongoing investigation into Jarred Harrell and his suspected illegal activities," Justino wrote in an e-mail.

Normal In court again/ second time in two days

Post by Nama on Thu Feb 25, 2010 11:09 am

Jarred Mitchell Harrell appeared before a Clay County judge this morning for the second time in two days, this time on charges of molesting a young child and 12 counts of child pornography.

County Judge Richard Townsend returned Harrell to the Clay County jail without bail on the charges, lewd and lascivious conduct on a child younger than 12 and producing child pornography. Authorities served the new arrest warrant on Harrell on Wednesday, a few hours after he faced Townsend on 29 counts of child pornography.

Harrell was returned to the Clay jail on $1 million bail in the first case.

One thing that appeared different about Harrell today is that he was wearing a thick, smock-like body cover designed to prevent inmates from ripping any clothing they are wearing to commit suicide. Harrell is being held in isolation in the jail.

Townsend scheduled arraignments for Harrell on March 10.

Normal EXCLUSIVE | Police: Jarred Harrell Took Pictures of 3-Year-Old in His Bedroom

Post by Nama on Sat Feb 27, 2010 1:45 am

Court records, obtained by First Coast News, show Clay County detectives believe Jarred Harrell took pictures of a little girl in the bedroom of his Gano Avenue home.

According to Harrell's arrest warrant involving the molestation and production of child porn charges, detectives seized a digital camera belonging to the 24-year-old at his home in Callahan, Fla.

The camera was found while police were serving a search warrant at the Nassau County house two weeks ago.

The arrest warrant states detectives found, on the camera's storage data card, a video and 11 still images.

Police described the pictures as that of "a partially nude, white female child between the ages of 3- to 5-years old."

According to the warrant, the little girl was asked to "...place herself in different positions during recording."

It states Harrell "...was also seen on the recording taking his hand and spreading" the little girl's body parts in order to expose her genitals.

The warrant said the child's mom identified the girl as her daughter.

Police said the pictures were taken between August and November 2008, when the child was 3.

The mother also told police the video of her daughter was taken in Harrell's bedroom, in his Orange Park home, at 1152 Gano Ave.

The girl's mother was able to identify the room by looking at other pictures on Harrell's camera, which were taken at the same time as the video, police said.

In addition to the molestation and production of child porn charges, Harrell is also charged with 29 counts of possession of child porn.

Just released court records show the ages of the girls in those pictures, which police said were found on Harrell's computer, are from under 10- to 18-years-old.

None of the charges against Harrell are related to the October disappearance of 7-year-old Somer Thompson, who vanished on her way home from school and was found dead in a landfill days later. But he is considered by the Clay County Sheriff's Office to be a person of interest in the case.

Normal Harrell Could Stay A 'Person Of Interest'

Post by Nama on Sat Feb 27, 2010 1:47 am

When it comes to the Somer Thompson murder case, Jarred Harrell could remain a 'person of interest' for quite a long time.
State Attorney Angela Corey can't say much about where the investigation is at, but she says his status might not change anytime soon. "There is not a timeline on how long someone can remain a person of interest," said Corey.
Corey is in regular communication with Clay County Sheriff Rick Beesler, while Steve Nelson is the "hands on, minute to minute" State Attorney working with the Sheriff's office.
Harrell is being held on $1 million bail on child porn possession charges but is being held without bond on the second set of charges that include production of child pornography.

Normal Questions Linger In Harrell's Arrest

Post by Nama on Mon Mar 01, 2010 4:15 pm

With the arrest of Jarred Harrell, 24, on child pornography, production and molestation charges, there are many questions about the man named as a person of interest in the killing of 7-year-old Orange Park girl Somer Thompson.
Angela Corey, of the State Attorney's Office, provided some answers on Monday.
"I can tell you we continue to work him as a primary person of interest or suspect, whichever way you want to phrase it, in the Somer Thompson case," Corey said.
Somer went missing in October on her way home from school, and her body was found days later in a Georgia landfill, where Orange Park's trash is dumped.
Investigators said Harrell lived in a home on Gano Avenue, where Somer was last seen.
The Clay County Sheriff's Office has never referred to Harrell as a suspect, but strictly as a person of interest.

Corey explained the difference between the two terms. She said investigators won't call Harrell a suspect unless there is enough evidence to charge him with murder. She said they are still working on gathering and processing evidence.
How long can someone be labeled a person of interest?
"Forever. There is no limitation of that specific description of someone that we believe may have committed a criminal act," Corey said.
Meanwhile, Corey said the child-molestation and pornography charges Harrell faces give investigators time to keep him in jail as they work on the Somer Case.
"With Harrell being arrested on these other charges, it gives us the luxury of time to work the physical evidence in the Somer case, and that's what we are doing," Corey said.
She said investigators have time on their side and they want to get all the facts and evidence in line. Corey said Harrell is not going anywhere.
"I think the community who has grieved for Somer, has prayed and worried with all of us, can be at ease right now," Corey said.

Normal Jarred Harrell Facing 13 New Charges Man Named As Person Of Interest In Girl's Slaying To Be Arraigned Wednesday

Post by Nama on Wed Mar 10, 2010 1:00 am

Jarred Harrell, the man named as a person of interest in the Somer Thompson murder case, is facing 13 new charges the day before he is set to be arraigned.
Harrell, 24, is accused of child molestation, production and possession of child pornography.
Clay County prosecutor Steve Nelson said Tuesday the new charges are related to the same child victim, a 3-year-old girl who Harrell's accused of molesting, and the child pornography images and video that deputies said they found on Harrell's computer last month.
Nelson said the girl's family knows Harrell and his family.
As a result of what else investigators have seen in those pictures and video, prosecutors said they are filing one new lewd and lascivious molestation charge against Harrell and 12 new counts of using a child in a sexual performance.
Prosecutors said the reason for the new charges is to "maximize the prosecution."
Deputies said the evidence comes from a memory card that was found on Harrell when he was arrested in Mississippi. They said images of the young girl were taken while Harrell was living at his parent's home on Gano Avenue, where Somer Thompson was last seen before she disappeared in October walking home from school.
Somer's body was found days later in a Folkston, Ga., landfill, where Orange Park's trash is dumped.
In total, Harrell is facing 55 charges. He is scheduled to be arraigned in court Wednesday morning, and he's currently being held without bond.

Normal Jarred Harrell Pleads Not Guilty to 55 Molestation, Porn Charges

Post by Nama on Wed Mar 10, 2010 10:42 am

Damn, he looks good in stripes!

As a group of bikers waving banners reading "Justice for Somer" attracted honks from passers-by outside the Clay County Courthouse, the man labeled a person of interest in the seven year old's murder pleaded not guilty to dozens of counts of child molestation and child pornography.

Jared Harrell, 24, said nothing in his short court appearance. His public defender, Kate Bedell, entered not guilty pleas on all 55 counts Harrell is charged with by Clay County prosecutors.
Harrell was arrested in Meridian, Mississippi last month, charged with possession 29 images and videos of child pornagraphy. Later in the month, the Clay County Sheriff's Office added a single count of child molestation of a victim younger than seven-years-old and 12 counts of producing child pornography.
The second set of charges carries a life sentence if Harrell is convicted.
Tuesday, the list of charges grew again. Prosecutors added a second molestation charge and a dozen more counts of producing child pornography.
"Charging in the most prudent way, and using all laws that have been violated in our opinion and charging it accordingly. So, it's the same incident, just charged a little bit more thoroughly," says Chief Assistant State Attorney Dan McCarthy.
McCarthy says the victim is a female relative of Harrell's and younger than seven years old.
Court records show the incident occured in 2008 at Harrell's stepfather's home on Gano Avenue in Orange Park, the same neighborhood Somer Thompson lived and went missing last October.

I bet mommy is wishing she had known about and destroyed the card!

Jarred Harrell, the person of interest in Somer Thompson's murder, pleaded not guilty to 55 counts of possessing child pornography, making child pornography and molestation Wednesday morning.

Harrell's arraignment in a Clay County courtroom lasted about two minutes. He was also out of the suicide vest he wore during his last court appearance. The judge set a pre-trial hearing for April 8th.

The charges against the 24-year-old stem from a memory card at the home of Harrell's mother. Investigators say he took pictures of a juvenile girl and posed her in each picture. Police have not charged Harrell with any crimes related to Somer Thompson's murder.

55 charges??? Mind boggling.

My question and I hope it's a HUGE NO. Did they find pics of Somer on that infamous memory card??

I am confused. WHY is he only a POI on crimes related to Somer Thompson?

And I agree, Rainbow..a 3 year old??

I want to know WHAT makes these people become like this?

Normal Harrell's Ex-Stepdad Talks Somer Case Joseph Newman Writes Letter To Channel 4 About Former Stepson

Post by Nama on Thu Mar 11, 2010 4:27 pm

Joseph Newman, who made headlines more than 20 years ago for marrying Jarred Harrell's mother and for marrying his 8-year-old sister, sent a one-page letter to Channel 4 talking about his former stepson and Somer Thompson.
Harrell has been named a person of interest in the killing of Somer, who was found dead in a landfill in October after disappearing on her way home from school.
Harrell is facing 55 charges involving possession and production of child pornography and lewd molestation unrelated to the Somer Thompson case.
Newman, Harrell's controversial former stepfather, predicted years ago that the world would end in 2012.
"UFOs are real and they are going to play a part in this," Newman said at the time. "And they are giving warnings to the world now."
Newman invented a well-publicized energy machine that got him on the network news. And newspaper articles show he didn't deny marrying Harrell's mother and 8-year-old sister.
In the letter Newman sent to Channel 4's Adam Landau in response, he said, "During the short time I was with Jarred, I found a child that was wanting love and guidance. I tried to give that to him.
Newman also wrote, "I hope Jarred is not guilty of killing the sweet Somer girl. I personally would not have thought the Jarred I knew capable of doing such. I hope all involved will make absolute proof he is guilty before damning him."
The letter also addresses Harrell's mother's fight for custody.
"I was in court in (Harrell's mother) Annis' behalf to keep Jarred's father from getting the children," Newman wrote. "While I was on the stand, God did such an astounding miracle that the judge dismissed the court. The attorney who was representing Jarred's father walked out of the court saying that he no longer represented him."

Normal Trash backup halted search for Fla. girl

Post by Nama on Thu Mar 11, 2010 8:46 pm

Florida police could have found the body of a 7-year-old girl at a trash dump instead of a Georgia landfill had the search not been halted, an official said.

Sheriff's deputies combing a suburban Jacksonville, Fla., trash site for Somer Thompson, who vanished while walking home from school last Oct. 19, stopped searching Oct. 20, mostly because of a backup of trash trucks, Clay County, Fla., Manager Fritz Behring told The (Jacksonville) Florida Times-Union.

Halting the search also prevented deputies from immediately finding the truck that held Somer's body, which could have narrowed the location where the girl was killed and dumped, the newspaper said.

Deputies found Somer's body Oct. 21 mixed with tons of trash at a landfill in Folkston, Ga., about 67 miles north of Green Cove Springs, Fla., where she disappeared.

A Jacksonville man, Jarred Harrell, 24, whom police call a person of interest in the case, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to 55 charges of possession and production of child pornography and lewd molestation.

Those charges were related to a case involving a 3-year-old girl Harrell is accused of molesting, prosecutors said.

Harrell was held without bail and is due back in court April 8.

I am confused by this sentence - it sounds like this man was married to Jarred Harrell's mother & also to his 8 year old sister?!? Shocked 2 Eeewww
I knew he came from a dysfunctional family, but that not only sounds very warped, but also illegal! I must be reading it wrong...

I'm wondering if the writer of the article made a typing error, and meant to say that he married Jarred's mother, and was a step father to Jarred and his 8 year old sister. That would make more sense, IMO! :idk:

In one of the prior articles it does explain that Newman was "married" to both mother and daughter.

For the entire article...

Sick SOB. It kinda makes me wonder if Newman was into child porn too. Could Harrel have picked it up from him? Hmmm. thinking

Thanks for the info, With Purpose!
Let me see if I got this correct: In Joe Newman's warped mind, he was "married" to his wife, his lover (Jared Harrell's mother), and her 8 year old stepdaughter (Jared's sister). Talk about a dysfunctional family! shocked3

I would agree with you that Newman was most likely into child porn, and I wouldn't be surprised if Harrell picked it up from him!

I don't think Newman is that kind of nuts.....IDK, but I don't think he would be into porn. He is definitely weird and probably insane, using the standards of most people. He wasn't always, he was a real genius but "normal" seeming guy, then something happened. He started talking about God and conversations with him.......???????

Man Charged With Murder In Somer Case
Clay County Sheriff's Office To Make Announcement
POSTED: Friday, March 26, 2010
UPDATED: 9:08 am EDT March 26,2010

Somer Renee Thompson.
ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- A man arrested in Mississippi on child pornography charges last month has now been charged with murder, sexual battery and other counts in connection with the death of Somer Thompson, WJXT-TV reported.
Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler notified the media before dawn Friday that he will announce a major development in the Somer Thompson homicide investigation at noon.
Team Somer, the group of investigators who have been working on the case since the 7-year-old was abducted and killed in October, will join the sheriff as he makes the announcement.
Jarred Harrell, the man named as the person of interest in Somer's case when he was arrested on child pornography charges last month, remains in jail.
Friday morning, sources confirmed to Local 6 News sister station WJXT-TV in Jacksonville that Harrell has been charged with murder and sexual battery.
Harrell was arrested last month in Meridian, Miss., and returned to Clay County to face 55 charges involving molestation and child pornography.
Clay County deputies said Harrell lived on Gano Avenue, a house that Somer walked by on her way home from school every day and only a few doors from where Somer was last seen alive. Her body was found two days later in the Charlton County, Ga., landfill where Orange's Park's trash is dumped.
Two weeks ago, Harrell was arraigned on pornography and molestation charges and pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors said counts of molestation and using a child in a sexual performance were related to a 3-year-old girl and that none of the charges had any connection to Somer.
Harrell is being held in an isolation cell and without bond in the Clay County jail. His public defender declined to comment on the case.
When Beseler made a brief statement after Harrell was arrested, he said he would not talk publicly about the Somer murder investigation until there was a major development.
Friday's announcement will take place at the First Baptist Church of Orange Park, the church where Somer's funeral was held.

I just saw today on the news, that Jarred Harrell has been arrested for the murder of Somer Thompson. I can't say that I am at all surprised, but I must say that I am very happy at this news!

However, listening to Somer's mom (Diena) speak at the news conference was so sad... although she is thrilled with the news, she sounded so broken inside. I can't imagine what she must be going through! I pray that God would bring healing and peace to her and her family at this time.

It is so true Rainbow! Yes, at least he will now be made to suffer for his crimes. He will no longer be a threat to society. But nothing will ever bring Somer back to her family and loved ones. 🇳🇴

Normal Authorities said she was asphyxiated and tossed into a trash bin, but they did not give many details about her death

Post by Nama on Fri Mar 26, 2010 1:43 pm

A 7-year-old Florida girl whose body was discovered in a Georgia landfill was walking home from school when she was lured into a home by a 24-year-old man and sexually assaulted before being killed, Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said Friday.
Jarred Mitchell Harrell, who was already in jail on dozens of child pornography charges, was charged with premeditated murder in the death of Somer Thompson. Authorities said she was asphyxiated and tossed into a trash bin, but they did not give many details about her death.
Harrell also faces charges of lewd and lascivious battery and sexual battery.
Somer, an elementary school student who loved the color purple and the song "You are My Sunshine," went missing Oct. 19. Her body was found two days later in a Georgia landfill about 50 miles from her north Florida home.
During a press conference at the same church where Somer's memorial service was held, Beseler said detectives used DNA evidence, witnesses and statements from Harrell himself to solve the case.
"Our collective resolve to bring Somer's killer to justice is the only light in the darkness caused by this tragedy," Beseler said as about 50 members of "Team Somer" — the sheriff's office investigators and staff who worked the case — stood by.
Harrell, who is being held at the Clay County Jail, has been in custody since Feb. 11, when authorities arrested him in Mississippi on child pornography charges in Florida.
His relatives have said they don't believe he is capable of violence. It is unclear whether he has an attorney. Messages left at the public defender's office were not immediately returned.
Prosecutors can seek the death penalty in this case, but they have not said whether they will do so.
Clay County detectives said at the time of Somer's disappearance, Harrell was living at his parents' suburban Jacksonville home, near her home and school.
Beseler said Somer was not in Harrell's parents' home for long. "I believe it was something that went rather quickly," he said.
He didn't want to reveal details about the case, for fear of jeopardizing the trial.
"We are confident Jarred Harrell committed this crime," Beseler said.
After Somer vanished, investigators interviewed all known sex offenders within a 5-mile radius of her home. On a hunch, they tailed nine garbage trucks from her neighborhood to the landfill and picked through the trash as each rig spilled its load and sorted through more than 225 tons of garbage before they spotted her legs sticking out of the trash.
The discovery of Somer's body touched off an outpouring of support in northeast Florida and southern Georgia for the Thompson family; days of vigils and fundraisers were held so Somer's mom, Diena Thompson, could financially afford to stay home with her other children. A mountain of stuffed animals, balloons and notes to the family sprung up near a tree across from the little girl's home.
Harrell had come to the attention of law enforcement in August, two months before Somer disappeared. His roommates said they kicked him out for stealing and they discovered child pornography. It was soon turned over to investigators.
The parents of one the roommates drove by Harrell's parents' home a few days after Somer disappeared and noticed how close they lived to the girl's house. When they saw Harrell's car in his parents' driveway, they told detectives.
He was arrested Feb. 11 on child pornography charges at an aunt's home in Meridian, Miss., where he had moved a few weeks earlier. He was then called only a person of interest in Somer's slaying.
The sheriff's office has said Harrell wasn't arrested earlier because detectives had to prove Harrell downloaded the child porn.
Harrell was charged with 29 counts of possessing child pornography in Florida, then charged with a dozen additional counts of child porn and child molestation.
At the time of his February arrest, Harrell's aunt said she didn't think her nephew was capable of violence.
"They tried to make it sound like he's some monster, but he's not," said Kriss Mizelle, who let Harrell stay with her in Meridian. "I could say all these good things about him, but nobody wants to hear that. They think you're delusional and don't know about his secret life, but he's a good kid."
Harrell was originally from Lucedale, Miss., and was home-schooled before moving to Florida. He worked various jobs, from cooking to retail, Mizelle said. Friends described him as a "computer wiz."
