Family, friends hopeful police getting closer cracking Family, friends hopeful police getting closer cracking Susan Powell case

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah—
Kiirsi Hellewell has hope that West Valley City Police are on to something in Delta while they search for her friend Susan Cox Powell.

Hellewell says she does not know what led police to search the West Desert for her best friend, but says it is an area where she knows Susan and Josh Powell camped at least one night with their three boys. She says that is where Josh may have done some rock hunting as well.

"In the summer of 2009 they went on four or five camping trips and they would just take their van and sleep in their van and just drive wherever and just camp wherever they wanted for the night," says Hellewell.

Hellewell says on one trip Susan left a Facebook update stating they took a wrong turn while looking for geodes near Dugway. She says that searchers now are not far from where Susan was describing.

"So I think they ended up in an erea that was maybe 20 miles away from where police are searching," she said.

Hellowell says she is not holding out much hope for what may come of the latest search, but it does give her renewed confidence in police that they have not let up on their investigation, and their desire to get to the bottom of what happened to Susan.

Susan's father Chuck Cox says he is hopefull this may be the search that leads to Susan. Cox spoke with FOX 13 via phone Tuesday evening.

"We got the feeling that things are moving along faster certainly. They've had a lot of time to evaluate the evidence that they've collected from previous search warrants and things and we are hopeful that that's leading them in a direction they might find her," says Cox.

Kirk Graves, who is married to Josh Powell's sister Jennifer, says he is just happy the search for Susan is still in the public's eye.

"We know that they've been on this the whole time, so from our perspective, it's just nice to see it's kind of public. People are paying attention again and anytime that happens it's good for Susan," says Graves.

Graves says he thinks what is best is for Josh and Steve Powell to cooperate with police.

"Josh makes himself look really guilty and, if I'm forced to really think about it, I have to think they know more than they've said, just from their behavior. How involved? I really don't know," he says.

EXCLUSIVE: Cadaver dogs searching for Susan Cox Powell in Utah's West Desert

Ben Winslow
fox13now.com
4:31 p.m. MDT, September 13, 2011

DELTA, Utah— Cadaver dogs and police officers on ATVs fanned out in the deserts around Topaz Mountain, searching for new clues in the case of missing West Valley City mom Susan Cox Powell.

The dogs sniffed through brush and debris as officers on ATVs moved in a slow grid pattern across the high-country desert terrain. Occasionally, they would stop and investigate something that didn't belong. In one instance, officers gathered around a tree where Lt. Bill Merritt had found a piece of carpet, half-buried. He removed it and cadaver dogs moved in. The dogs ultimately did not find anything, and the search continued.

Fox 13 was the only news station to follow West Valley City police as they began the latest stage in the nearly two year old missing persons case. Police would only say that they were following up on information that brought them about 40 miles from Delta.

"We're going to be out here doing some grid searches with the ATVs. We'll have people on foot, as well. We actually are going to have an airplane up here in a little bit. They're going to be looking from the air, seeing if there's anything that we've missed," said Merritt. "We're very hopeful that we'll come up with something but we just don't know at this point whether we will or not."

Investigators conducted a preliminary search Monday and a full-scale search began Tuesday morning. The search is expected to last until Thursday. Many of the details in the investigation are under a sealed court order.

"There are going to be a handful of people that get their hopes up, that start to think this is the big break in the case. As of right now, it is not. We certainly hope that it could lead that way," Merrit said.

Susan's father, Chuck Cox, told Fox 13 police did not provide him with any details about the search other than the location.

"They didn't say what they were looking for. Obviously, they're looking for Susan or something to do with her case, but they didn't give me any details beyond that they were doing a search," Cox said in a phone interview with Fox 13.

Police did not say if Tuesday's search is a result of evidence gathered in the August 25 evidence search at the home of Josh and Steve Powell in Puyallup, Wash.

Susan Cox Powell disappeared from her West Valley City home on December 7, 2009. Susan's husband, Josh Powell, told police he was camping with his two sons that night. Questions have surrounded Powell and a trip of several hundred miles he reportedly took in a rental car when police seized the family's minivan.

Police have said their investigation into Susan Powell's disappearance has been hindered by Josh Powell's lack of cooperation with detectives. They have called him a "person of interest" in his wife's disappearance.

Normal Police find human remains in Utah Police searching the Utah desert in connection with the 2009 disappearance of Susan Cox Powell found human remains Wednesday near Topaz Mountain

Post by artgal16 on Wed Sep 14, 2011 5:45 pm

NBC station KSL reported in in the search for Susan Powell

Investigators with cadaver dogs found the remains in the deserted, high desert mountain area 130 miles southwest of Provo, said Sgt. Mike Powell of West Valley.

There is no confirmation yet as to whether the remains are of Powell, but they were found in an area that authorities said is popular with rock hounds and where her husband, Josh Powell, liked to camp

Josh Powell, husband of Susan Cox Powell, remains a person of interest in his wife's disappearance.

Susan Cox Powell was last seen at her West Valley City, Utah, home on Dec. 6, 2009.

Her husband told authorities that he took the couple's two young children camping in single-digit temperatures in a remote part of Tooele County in the middle of the night. He said that when he returned a day and a half later, his wife was gone.

The desolate, scrub-spotted Topaz Mountain is less than 30 miles from Simpson Springs, the area Josh Powell told investigators he went camping that night with his sons, then ages 2 and 4, KSL reported.

Josh Powell, who now lives in Puyallup, Wash., with his father, Steve Powell, remains a person of interest in the case because he has been uncooperative, West Valley Police say.

On Aug. 25, West Valley police detectives, with assistance from the Pierce County, Wash., Sheriff's Office went to Puyallup to serve a search warrant on the home of Steve Powell, Susan's father-in-law, and her husband. Authorities seized computers and journals during an extensive hours-long search.

Susan Powell's father, Chuck Cox, said he believes information from search warrants and interviews led authorities to search the Utah desert.

Cox said West Valley police called him earlier Wednesday at his Puyallup home, but he said the search area is pretty deserted anyone could be buried out there.

"They said they had found a place they were interested in," Cox said.

"This is not unexpected in that area that they would find something out there," he said. "I'm sure there are people who have died in the desert that nobody knows about. It could be a pioneer to who knows
what."

He said he would wait for something definitive from the coroner or the police before he knows for sure that it is his daughter.

The latest search is in an area popular for gem and rock hunters.

Since Monday, searchers covered about 12 square miles in and around Topaz Mountain west of Nephi and northwest of Delta, northeast of Highway 174. The area is 35 miles northwest of Delta and about 135 miles southwest of where the mother of two was last seen December 2009 in West Valley City.

Families fight
The Cox and Powell families have been at odds over the search for Susan Powell.

The Powell family has throughout the investigation claimed they believe Susan Powell ran off with another man. Her family, however, has said they have just been praying she's still alive, and has pleaded with her husband to cooperate with authorities.

Steve Powell, claimed in a nationally televised interview Aug. 25 that he had a flirtatious relationship with his daughter-in-law, that they were in love — something her parents adamantly denied, saying Steve
Powell initiated unwanted sexual advances toward her.

The Powell family has also offering as proof several diary pages from the missing woman's teenage years. Her family says the entries were written by a young girl and have no bearing on her disappearance. A Washington state court on Aug. 25 granted a temporary restraining order sought by her family, prohibiting the Powells from disseminating the journal entries.

Cox family attorney Anne Bremner at teh time accused the Powells of making a terrible situation even worse.

"What they're doing is adding such horrible angst to her parents that we have to stop this," Bremner said. "It's gone from just bizarre to just unbearable for the family."

On Aug. 23, a Washington state court commissioner ordered that Josh Powell and Chuck Cox stay 500 feet away from each other.

Josh Powell sought the restraining order, saying Cox had threatened him and stalked him and his sons. The most serious claim was that Cox showed up at a home-improvement store where Powell and the boys were attending a workshop last month and mouthed the words "You're dead" at Powell — something Cox adamantly denied.

"He knew we would be there," Powell told the commissioner. "He has been stalking us to come into the places we would be to inject himself into our lives."

On Aug. 19 and 20, abandoned mine shafts were searched in the mountains outside of Ely, Nev.

Human remains found during Susan Cox Powell search
Published: Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011 3:45 p.m. MDT
By Pat Reavy
and Sam Penrod, Deseret News

DELTA — Human remains have been found during the search for evidence in the case of missing West Valley mother Susan Cox Powell.

Investigators "are at the location of what appears to be human remains" found by cadaver dogs Wednesday afternoon, said West Valley Police Sgt. Mike Powell.

The Juab County Sheriff's Office was en route to the scene to handle the investigation. The discovery comes on the third day of searching the area near Topaz Mountain in Juab County for clues that might help them discover what happened to Susan Powell.

The 28-year-old mother from the Salt Lake City area was reported missing on Monday, Dec. 7, 2009.
Chuck Cox, Susan's father, said he received a call from police at his home in Puyallup, Wash., about 30 minutes before the first of many media calls.

"They said they had found a place they were interested in," Cox said.

"This is not unexpected in that area that they would find something out there," he said. "I'm sure there are people who have died in the desert that nobody knows about. It could be a pioneer to who knows what."

Cox said all he and his wife could do now was wait for tests to be conducted to determine if the remains were male or female and how long they had been there.

"Now it's a matter of letting real science work," Cox said. "That just takes time."

The Cox family has spent a lot of time waiting to receive news about their missing daughter. The fact that bones have been discovered really doesn't change the difficulty of waiting, he said.

"Every time a new hope comes up, we think 'Maybe this is the one.' That s what we live with everyday. Maybe the next phone call will be the one they say, 'We found her.'"

Likewise, Susan’s Cox Powell’s brother-in-law, Kirk Graves, said this wasn’t the first time his family had gone through this.

“It’s a hard thing to hear. It’s an emotional thing,” he said. “One way or another, we will find some closure on this thing.”

Since Monday, a team of investigators from West Valley police, along with deputies from the Juab and Carbon county sheriff's offices, have been conducting an investigation in and around Topaz Mountain west of Nephi and northwest of Delta.

Search teams had returned for lunch early Wednesday afternoon and were waiting for a team with several cadaver dogs to join them, but it never returned. That's when investigators learned that the dogs had located human remains during their search.

"Several of the dogs indicated positively several times that it is human remains," West Valley Police Lt. Bill Merritt said. "These dogs are able to distinguish the difference between human and animal remains. They don't pay attention to animal remains. They're not interested in them whatsoever."

Merritt said the Juab County Sheriff's Office was called to the area, which is protocol since it has jurisdiction in the area. "Together we'll decide if this is going to be a crime scene," he said.

There was no immediate details about the condition of the remains or whether any clothing was also located. Investigators were not even saying the exact location of the remains.

The lieutenant said it is likely there are other human remains located within 100 square miles of the area, but agreed locating the remains was similar to finding a needle in a haystack.

This undated picture made available by Hardman Photography shows Susan Powell. The 28-year-old mother from the Salt Lake City area was reported missing on Monday, Dec. 7, 2009.

"The chances are probably not very good (that remains would be found), and that's exactly why we have cadaver dogs out here," Merritt said. "Coming across one is quite the achievement."

Other teams continued to search the area while investigators processed the scene where the remains were located.

This is the third publicly visible search in the case in the past month. On Aug. 25, detectives from the West Valley Police Department with assistance from the Pierce County Sheriff's Office in Washington went to Puyallup, Wash., to serve a search warrant on the home of Steve and Josh Powell, Susan's father-in-law and husband.

On Aug. 19 and 20, abandoned mine shafts were searched in the mountains outside of Ely, Nev.

Susan Cox Powell, a 28-year-old mother of two, has been missing since Dec. 6, 2009. The night before she was reported missing, Josh Powell, Susan's husband, said he took their two young children camping in single-digit temperatures in a remote part of Tooele County in the middle of the night. When he returned a day and a half later, he said his wife was gone.

Josh Powell has been called a person of interest in the case because West Valley police say he has been uncooperative.

Topaz Mountain is less than 30 miles from Simpson Springs, the area Josh Powell told investigators he went camping that night with his sons.

Possible Human Remains Found in Susan Powell Search
Email0Smaller FontTextLarger Text|Print

Police searching for Susan Cox Powell in a Utah desert have found remains that “almost certainly human”, according to ABC News affiliate ABC4. It is not yet known whether they belong to Powell, the mother of two from West Valley City, Utah, who disappeared in 2009.

Cadaver dogs that had been combing the fields around Topaz Mountain, near Delta, Utah, found the remains today, according to the report.

Police said the remains are almost certainly human, not animal, though gender or how long they have been there could not yet be determined, the report said. A medical examiner has been brought to the scene, police told ABC4.

A reporter from the Salt Lake City Tribune tweeted that the West Valley Police, who are leading the investigation into Powell’s disappearance and death, are treating the area as a crime scene and are awaiting Juab County, Utah, sheriff’s officers to arrive to process the remains.
Powell disappeared in December, 2009, while her husband, Josh Powell, allegedly took their children camping at midnight in a snow and rain storm. The campsite he told police he went to is 30 miles away from the desert where the remains were found.

Josh Powell has long been a person of suspect in the investigation, and police recently raided the home he and his father share in Washington. Prior to that, police had searched abandoned mines in Ely, Nevada, in connection to the case.

Search for Susan Powell turns up human remains

BY NATE CARLISLE
The Salt Lake Tribune

First published 7 hours ago

Topaz Mountain • Police searching for Susan Cox Powell found human remains Wednesday but do not yet know whether they belong to the woman who disappeared almost two years ago.

Several cadaver dogs confirmed remains discovered just before 2 p.m. were human, said West Valley City police Lt. Bill Merritt. He did not know how old the remains are and would not say how intact they were.

Investigators ended their search of the area and excavation of the remains for the day at about 4 p.m. Merritt said it was getting too late for personnel from the Utah Medical Examiner’s office to travel and they will arrive Thursday morning instead.

Two detectives will camp overnight with the remains to protect the scene.

"There’s no hurry," Merritt said. "This is something we do not want to rush."

Wednesday’s discovery comes on a third day of a police search of the remote area on all-terrain vehicles, traversing dirt trails and sagebrush and checking some abandoned mines.

About six ATV riders spread out and drove slowly across the valley floor in a search pattern Wednesday. In the other direction, five cadaver dogs and handlers searched underneath trees and in gullies.

"We’re focusing on areas that make sense — close to roads, ravines,"said Merritt.

Authorities find human remains in Utah desert while searching for missing mom Susan Cox Powell
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Wednesday, September 14th 2011, 8:22 PM

SALT LAKE CITY - Authorities discovered human remains Wednesday while searching Utah's rugged desert for clues in the disappearance of a mother whose husband liked to camp in the area.

The remains were not immediately identified, and it wasn't clear if the body was that of Susan Cox Powell. Authorities also weren't certain if the remains belonged to a male or female.

"It's a game of patience at this point," West Valley City Sgt. Mike Powell said. "We need to slow down a little bit and identify what it is we found."

A medical examiner was on the way to the scene.

Powell was 28 when she was reported missing Dec. 7, 2009, after she failed to show up for her stockbroker job. She had been seen by friends at church and at dinner the previous day.

Her husband, Josh Powell, told police he left his wife at home about 12:30 a.m. that day to go winter camping in freezing temperatures with their young sons - then 4 and 2 - on the Pony Express Trail, about 80 miles west of Salt Lake City. The 4-year-old confirmed the trip to police.

Josh Powell is the only person of interest in the case, although he's never been arrested or charged. His family believes Susan Powell ran off with another man.

Authorities have been searching since Monday in the area near Topaz Mountain in Juab County. The site is about 135 miles southwest of the location where Susan Powell was last seen in West Valley City.

Last month, investigators searched mine shaft-dotted mountains near Ely, Nev., and later served a search warrant on the Puyallup, Wash., home Josh Powell shares with his father, seizing computers and journals thought to have belonged to Susan Powell.

This latest search is in an area popular for gem and rock hunters. Police have said Powell's husband liked to rock hunt in the area.

"From the very beginning he clearly indicated he had been in and around the area," said Sgt. Powell, who is not related to the family of the missing woman.

In May, speculation swirled that remains found in the desert about 50 miles southwest of Salt Lake City might have been Susan Powell, but authorities later said it was a young adult male.

Josh Powell didn't immediately return a telephone call on Wednesday. Susan Powell's father, Chuck Cox, also wasn't immediately available for comment.

Last month, the nearly 2-year-old case turned salacious as family members on both sides sparred over truth and fiction, and accusations of sex and lies.

Josh Powell's family claims Susan Powell was sexually promiscuous, emotionally unstable and suicidal. They were offering as proof several diary pages from the missing woman's teenage years.

Her family says the entries were written by a young girl still growing up and have no bearing on her disappearance. They got a temporary order in a Washington court prohibiting the Powells from distributing the journal pages.

Josh Powell has mostly remained quiet throughout the investigation. Police have said he hasn't cooperated.

But in a string of national television interviews in August, Josh Powell denied killing his wife and having anything to do with her disappearance.

In another strange twist, Steve Powell, Josh's father, said he and Susan Powell were falling in love and even implied a sexual relationship had occurred.

"Susan was very sexual with me," Steve Powell said on ABC's "Good Morning America."

"We interacted in a lot of sexual ways because Susan enjoys doing that," he said.

Susan's father, Chuck Cox, said the allegations are false. He claims it was Steve Powell who initiated unwanted sexual advances, and that his daughter had no interest in her father-in-law.

The feuding between the two sides got so heated that a court commissioner in Washington state ordered Chuck Cox and Josh Powell to keep 500 feet apart.

Chuck Cox has said his family remains hopeful but were preparing for the worst.

Missing mom's dad: Are these remains Susan's?

(CBS/AP) Nearly two years after she vanished, Susan Powell's friends and family are waiting to learn whether there's been a major break in her case after authorities discovered human remains during their latest search for clues in the Utah desert.

The mother of two boys was 28 when she was reported missing Dec. 7, 2009, after she failed to show up for her stockbroker job. The case has cast a harsh spotlight on Powell's husband, who remains the only person of interest but has never been arrested or charged.

It wasn't immediately known if the remains found Wednesday are those of Powell, or if they were even female. Authorities planned to resume their investigation Thursday morning.

"It's a game of patience at this point," West Valley City Sgt. Mike Powell said. "We need to slow down a little bit and identify what it is we found."

Meanwhile, friends and family waited and prayed.

Susan Powell's father, Chuck Cox, expressed doubt that the remains are those of his daughter. He said that would mean whoever took her would have had to have dumped her body in the middle of a high desert freezing winter, when the ground would have been covered in snow and frozen solid.

"We're just waiting," he said Wednesday evening.

On "The Early Show" Thursday, Cox said the area where police are searching has always been on a list that they've wanted to search, and that he doesn't know of any new information received by authorities that would have prompted them to search in that area..

He said, "This is just one of the places they felt they needed to search, and I think the opportunity of the weather and manpower and the prioritization of their lists, that this has come up at this time."

After two years of searching, Cox said, he knows now that he has to be patient.

"The first (searches) were very traumatic. And now, this is like the fifth or sixth time that this has happened, and now it's kind of -- I know that I have to ... wait for the police to come up with really what is found and do the forensics and things like that. But you always wonder, 'Is this going to be the time?' Because we have lived for almost two years now with the phone on at all times and every phone call, is, 'Who could that be? Could this be the one? Maybe they found my daughter."'

Kiirsi Hellewell, a close friend of Susan Powell, said the discovery of remains brought a sense of hope that the case might finally move forward, but also sadness that she might really be dead.

"It's always a mixture of emotions, because we've been down this road before with the discovery of bodies and remains," Hellewell said. "It's like a seesaw, because we also don't want to find out that she's dead."

In May, speculation swirled that remains found in the desert about 50 miles southwest of Salt Lake City might have been those of Powell, but authorities later said they were of a young adult male.

Authorities have been searching since Monday in the area near Topaz Mountain in Juab County. The site is about 135 miles southwest of the location where Susan Powell was last seen, where she lived, in West Valley City, Utah.

Last month, investigators searched mine shaft-dotted mountains near Ely, Nev., and later served a search warrant at the Puyallup, Wash. home that her husband, Josh Powell, shares with his father, seizing computers and journals.

This latest search is in an area popular for gem and rock hunters. Police have said Josh Powell liked to rock hunt in the area.

"From the very beginning, he clearly indicated he had been in and around the area," said Sgt. Powell, who is not related to Susan Powell's family.

In an interview with Josh Powell last month, CBS News contributor Hattie Kauffman asked, "In retrospect, do you think about how bad it looks that you left the house at midnight with the two boys, during the time she disappeared?"

Josh Powell replied, "We've gone out and done things like that before. ... Sometimes we go out looking for rocks."

Kauffman asked, "Were you looking for rocks that night? Was that a rock hunting trip?"

Josh Powell said, "We just were playing."

Kauffman remarked, "One report said it was a blizzard. Nobody goes camping in a blizzard."

Josh Powell said, "Yeah."

When asked if he had anything to do with her disappearance, he said, "No."

Kauffman pressed, "Did you kill your wife?"

Powell said, "I would never even hurt her. People who know me know that I could never hurt Susan."

Josh Powell says he believes his wife ran off with another man and has told police he left her at home about 12:30 a.m. on that Dec. 7 to go winter camping in freezing temperatures with their young sons -- then 4 and 2 -- about 80 miles west of Salt Lake City. The 4-year-old confirmed the trip to police.

Over the past weeks, the case has taken salacious turns, as family members on both sides sparred over truth and fiction, and accusations of sex and lies.

Josh Powell's family claims Susan Powell was sexually promiscuous, emotionally unstable and suicidal. They were offering as proof several diary pages from the missing woman's teenage years. Her family says the entries were written by a young girl still growing up and have no bearing on her disappearance. They got a temporary order in a Washington court prohibiting the Powells from distributing them.

Josh Powell has mostly remained quiet throughout the investigation, and police say he hasn't been cooperative.

But in a string of national television interviews in August, including the one with Kauffman, Josh Powell denied having anything to do with her disappearance.

In another strange twist, Steve Powell, Josh's father, said he and Susan Powell were falling in love and even implied a sexual relationship had occurred.

Susan's father, Chuck Cox, said the assertions are false. He claims it was Steve Powell who initiated unwanted sexual advances, and that his daughter had no interest in her father-in-law.

The feuding between the two sides got so heated that a court commissioner in Washington State ordered Chuck Cox and Josh Powell to keep 500 feet apart.

On "The Early Show" Thursday, Cox said that, right after Susan's disappearance, Josh Powell permitted his boys to come over for holidays and other visits, but the visits grew more infrequent, then stopped altogether.

Cox said, "Basically, after the second visit in New Year's, the grandchildren didn't want to go home with Daddy, and I think that bothered him. So, anyway, no, we haven't seen them after that. Basically, it's been less and less interaction with us and the grandchildren since then."

Josh Powell and his family released a statement Wednesday saying, "With very little information available to the public, we can only hope that additional information is released quickly to minimize heartache to those of us who love Susan. In the meantime, we continue to hope for Susan's safe return."

Anthropologist to study remains discovered during search for Susan Cox Powell

DELTA — An anthropologist with the Fillmore office of the Bureau of Land Management has arrived at Topaz Mountain to look at human remains found by police looking for clues in the disappearance of West Valley mother Susan Cox Powell.

Joelle McCarthy said she will determine whether the remains are "modern," meaning they have been there within the past 50 years, or "historic," meaning they may have been there anytime between about 1960 and 1776.

"Hopefully there will be some artifacts that will help determine an age," she said. "We'll look for anything left or made by humans."

McCarthy said she'll be looking for artifacts as well as the soil and vegetation around the remains. Part of her job is also to determine whether the remains are Native American or European American. Depending on how old she determines the remains to be, an additional physical anthropologist expert from the BLM may be asked to respond to the scene Friday to also look at the remains, she said.

Police confirmed Wednesday afternoon that human remains were found in a remote area around Topaz Mountain. They would not describe the condition of the body or the remains, whether it was in a shallow grave or if anything else was found around the remains that might help to identify the person.

Susan Powell's father, Chuck Cox, arrived in Utah about noon Thursday from his home in Washington state. He was not invited, but said he came by his own choice and hopes to convince West Valley police to let him visit the site in Juab County.

While his family has experienced the roller coaster ride of up and down emotions before when other remains have been found, he said this time feels a bit different since the remains were found during a specific police search for his daughter.

Cox still holds out hope, however, that his daughter is alive.

After the BLM completes its investigation, it will determine whether the remains should be left in place or if the state medical examiner should be called to the scene, said West Valley Police Lt. Bill Merritt.

While West Valley officials wait for word on whether they can examine the remains, a search of the area with cadaver dogs resumed Thursday. "We don't want to be sitting around doing nothing and wasting valuable time," Merritt said.

The Topaz Mountain region is about 25 miles from Simpson Springs, where Josh Powell claimed he took his two young sons camping on a snowy night in December 2009, right before his wife went missing.

Human remains found in the search for missing Utah woman Susan Powell were determined to be recent and were found in what police told Powell's father amounted to a "shallow grave."

An anthropoligst examined the remains today to ensure that they were not bones "of antiquity" that had been buried in the desert for decades, said West Valley City Police Sgt. Mike Powell, who is no relation to the family.

Powell's father, Chuck Cox, told ABC affiliate KOMO that police had said the remains were found in a shallow grave.

Powell disappeared in December 2009 while her husband allegedly took their two children camping in middle of the night during a snow and rain storm. The campsite where he told police he took them is about 30 miles away from where the remains were discovered.

"This is something that's going to be interesting," Sgt. Powell said. "We're not looking at some Indian burial ground or old cowboy from the West. It's much more recent than that. It's definitely something."

Sgt. Powell said they could not yet identify the gender or other identifying clues that would lead police to believe it was Susan Cox Powell's body.

The sergeant would not call the remains "bones," and said that whatever police found may not have been visible to the human eye. The remains were found by cadaver dogs on Wednesday.

Two fresh cadaver dogs will be brought in to go over the patch of ground where the remains were found, and then a medical examiner will likely be called to begin the process of identifying them, Sgt. Powell said.

Police are continuing their search throughout the desert around the base of Mount Topaz,.

Susan Powell's father, Chuck Cox, told ABC News that the more he learns about the human remains found in the desert, the more worried he is that they could be his daughter.

"It does bother me that it's in the same general area, and the more I learn about the location, the more it bothers me," Cox, said.

Cox holds out hope that his daughter, who was 28 when she disappeared, is still alive.

"They have not identified these as her remains yet. She could still be out there, maybe alive," Cox said.

Susan Powell's husband Josh Powell, 35, released a statement after the discovery of the remains that read, "With very little information available to the public, we can only hope that additional information is released quickly to minimize heartache to those of us who love Susan. In the meantime, we continue to hope for Susan's safe return."

The husband is the only person who the police have identified as a person of interest in his wife's disappearance.

Powell says he has never been to the area where the remains were found. The area is a popular place where people go to hunt for gems and stones.

Throughout the nearly two-year ordeal, Josh Powell has continued to proclaim his innocence. This summer, investigators stepped up their efforts to find Susan Powell. They searched abandoned mines in the Nevada desert and executed a search warrant on the Washington state home Josh Powell shares with his father, Steven Powell. "I believe the police are doing a good job of the investigation and they're going to get to the truth with or without his help," Cox said.

Cox has been in a war of words with Steven and Josh Powell. Steven Powell said in August that he had a "flirtatious" relationship with his daughter-in-law. Susan Powell's father has refuted those claims.

While Cox wants closure in his daughter's disappearance, he is trying to stay calm.

"It doesn't get our hopes up a lot," he said. "At the same time, it could be the break. We live that every day. Every phone call we get could be the one that tells us we've found Susan."

Investigators are working to identify the gender and age of the remains.http://abcnews.go.com/US/susan-powell-search-human-remains-desert-recent-cops/story?id=14525301

Shallow grave would be consistent with a weenie like Josh not being able to dig very deep as there was snow on the ground and the ground was frozen under the snow.
I really thought he had tossed her in an old mine, a cave, or down some kind of deep pit out in the desert.

DELTA, Utah — A search in the Utah desert for a missing mother took a strange turn Thursday when the site that authorities said contained human remains turned up no body parts.

Cadaver dogs discovered the location this week amid a renewed search for Susan Powell, and investigators declared that they had found human remains.

But authorities now say that after digging into the site, they have found no remains. Police did not say why they earlier stated that they had found human remains when they had not even seen any.

"Right now, we haven't found anything except for these scents that these dogs are picking up," said West Valley City Police Lt. Bill Merritt. "We have not come across bones."

Because the site is on government land, a federal anthropologist was brought in to examine the site Thursday and see if it was part of an ancient burial ground. Investigators then began sifting through what was described as a shallow grave as they searched for clues, but had so far found nothing.

Investigators previously said that a federal anthropologist had determined the remains found in a remote area of central Utah were not ancient, but instead were much more recent.

"We're not looking at some ancient burial ground," Merritt said. "This is not going to be some cowboy from the West."

Merritt said later Thursday that authorities had only begun to dig into the dirt in the afternoon. By 5 p.m., they had dug about a foot down and three feet across, but came across nothing.

"Shovel by shovel full," Merritt said. "Every shovel full that comes out is being sifted through. It's a painstaking process."

West Valley City Police Chief Thayne "Buzz" Nielsen said the area where the dogs indicated remains would be found was beneath what appeared to be a shallow grave covered with dirt.

"They have found what looks like a grave where the dirt has been shoveled and moved around a little bit," Nielsen said.

Police have been searching since Monday in the area near Topaz Mountain in Juab County for any clues in the disappearance of Susan Powell. The site is about 135 miles southwest of the location where she was last seen at her home in West Valley City on Dec. 7, 2009. It is also just about 30 miles south of where Powell's husband, Josh Powell, told police he took his two young children camping on the night his wife vanished.

He is the only person of interest in the case, but has never been arrested or charged.

Merritt said the discovery "fits in with what we've been looking for."

Asked whether he was hopeful Susan Powell's remains would be found there, Merritt called it "50-50 at this point."

Authorities planned to bring in fresh cadaver dogs to search around the area later Thursday.

Meanwhile, Susan Powell's father, Chuck Cox, was headed to the site, authorities said.

Susan Powell was 28 when she was reported missing Dec. 7, 2009, after she failed to show up for her stockbroker job. The case has cast a harsh spotlight on Powell's husband. Josh Powell has not returned repeated calls to the Associated Press seeking comment. In a string of national television interviews last month, he denied killing his wife or having anything to do with her disappearance.

"We would love this to be a break," Merritt said. "We hope, to a certain extent, that it is not Susan because that would mean that she is maybe alive somewhere."

The area is in a rugged remote section of Utah's central high desert surrounded by grasses and sagebrush and punctuated by jagged mountains rising from the flat landscape. At the time of year Susan Powell vanished, it would have been covered in snow, the ground frozen.

Josh Powell was driving a minivan that night.

Merritt said the site would have been difficult to reach in December but not impossible.

"Impossible? I can't say that," he said. "Difficult? It probably would be."

Meanwhile, friends and family waited and prayed.

In May, speculation swirled that remains found in the desert about 50 miles southwest of Salt Lake City might have been those of Susan Powell, but authorities later said it was a young adult male.

Last month, investigators searched mine shaft-dotted mountains near Ely, Nev., and later served a search warrant at the Puyallup, Wash., home that Josh Powell shares with his father, seizing computers and journals.

"From the very beginning he clearly indicated he had been in and around the area," said West Valley City Police Sgt. Mike Powell, who is not related to the family of the missing woman.

Susan Powell's father, Chuck Cox, expressed doubt that the remains belonged to his daughter because of how difficult it would have been to access the area in winter.

"We're just waiting," he said Wednesday evening.

The Powell family put out a statement late Wednesday urging police to put out details about the remains.

Susan Powell Search: No Human Remains Found, After All, Officials Say

Sept. 15, 2011

No actual human remains have been found in the search for missing Utah woman Susan Powell, though police cadaver dogs did pick up scents at a desert location, police reportedly said, clarifying earlier claims that they had found remains.

"Right now, we haven't found anything except for these scents that these dogs are picking up," said West Valley City, Utah, Police Lt. Bill Merritt, according to The Associated Press. "We have not come across bones."

Earlier, police offered details about the find, saying the remains near Topaz Mountain in Juab County, Utah, were recent and in what they told Powell's father amounted to a "shallow grave."

West Valley City Police Sgt. Mike Powell, no relation to Susan Powell, added that an anthropologist even examined the remains to ensure that they were not bones "of antiquity" that had been buried in the desert for decades.

"This is something that's going to be interesting," Sgt. Powell said earlier. "We're not looking at some Indian burial ground or old cowboy from the West. It's much more recent than that. It's definitely something."

Later, officials clarified to the AP that the anthropologist was called in to determine whether the site was an ancient burial ground.

Police did not fully explain why they earlier said they had found remains.

Powell disappeared in December 2009 while her husband allegedly took their two children camping in middle of the night during a snow and rain storm. The campsite where he told police he took them is about 30 miles away from where officials reported the remains discovered.

After the discovery, Sgt. Powell said officials could not immediately determine the remains' gender or find other identifying clues that would lead police to believe it was Susan Cox Powell's body.

The sergeant would not call the remains "bones," and said that whatever police found may not have been visible to the human eye. The alleged remains were found by cadaver dogs on Wednesday.

Two fresh cadaver dogs will be brought in to go over the patch of ground where the remains were found, and then a medical examiner was likely to be called to begin the process of identifying them, Sgt. Powell said.

Police are continuing their search throughout the desert around the base of Mount Topaz.

Earlier, Susan Powell's father, Chuck Cox, told ABC affiliate KOMO that police had said the remains were found in a shallow grave. And he told ABC News that the more he learned about the human remains found in the desert, the more worried he is that they could be his daughter.

Susan Powell's husband Josh Powell, 35, released a statement after officials claimed to discover remains that read, "With very little information available to the public, we can only hope that additional information is released quickly to minimize heartache to those of us who love Susan. In the meantime, we continue to hope for Susan's safe return."

The husband is the only person who the police have identified as a person of interest in his wife's disappearance.

My brain hurts reading the last two articles! I read one of these this afternoon and thought it had to be me, that for some reason I was not understanding. WTF !!!!!

This 'new information' that there's really no bones makes me even more suspicious. Why would Susan's Dad go there if there were no bones? Why would he be even more worried? Something tell me that LE does not want the Powells or the general public knowing something. Either that or I've lost it more than I thought.

I think the reason that they don't think the remains, if found, (based on scents that these dogs are picking up) aren't ancient is because "Soil at the site showed signs of a recent disturbance indicating remains would be less than 10 years old, Merritt said."

I agree w/both of you.

I do not think LE wants a lot of info out there. I think Josh is a huge flight risk as is his sicko dad. I sure hope they have them under surveillance!!

Disruption of Susan Powell search site ‘fairly recent’

BY NATE CARLISLE

Topaz Mountain • Police searching for signs of Susan Cox Powell are continuing to excavate an area where multiple cadaver dogs have indicated there are human remains.

West Valley City police Lt. Bill Merritt said Thursday afternoon that U.S. Bureau of Land Management anthropologist Joelle McCarthy determined any remains would neither be historic nor likely to belong to a Native American.

Soil at the site showed signs of a recent disturbance indicating remains would be less than 10 years old, Merritt said. Investigators by Thursday evening had dug an area about 2 feet wide and 1 foot deep at the site but did not discover any bones before stopping for the day at 6 p.m.

"The dogs are still smelling something, but we have not come across bones," Merritt said. "We have not come across clothing."

The excavation and additional police searches of the area were set to resume at 9 a.m. Friday. The dig will continue as long as the cadaver dogs — able to detect remains buried as much as 12 feet deep — are indicating, said Merritt.

West Valley City Police Chief Buzz Nielsen joined investigators at the search command post Thursday afternoon, saying he wanted to see the area and discuss detectives’ needs. He said the cadaver dogs alerted their handlers to a location with "upturned soil" Wednesday afternoon.

"We’re hoping it’s a really good lead for us," Nielsen said. "There is some information we received lately that says they [Susan and Josh Powell] were out here."

This remote area is about 30 miles away from where Josh Powell, the only person of interest named in his wife’s disappearance, says he took his two young sons camping the night his wife disappeared from their West Valley City home. Police have said Josh Powell liked to gem hunt — and family and friends have confirmed that Josh and Susan Powell had visited the area on previous family excursions.

So this IS serious. This last article made much more sense than the other two. OMG, it really could be her.
I'm positive she's dead so I can say this, for her family and friends, I hope their search ends here. They need what little peace they can get now. Josh and dad need to not be with those boys any longer and need to be locked up.

Police in Susan Powell missing case say "50/50" chance remains could be found

(CBS/KIRO/AP) JUAB COUNTY, Utah - A search in the Utah desert for missing woman Susan Powell took a strange turn Thursday when the site that authorities said contained human remains turned up no body parts, but a police lieutenant said he thought there was a "50/50" chance Powell's remains could be found there.

Cadaver dogs discovered the location this week amid a renewed search for Powell and investigators declared that they had found human remains.

But CBS affiliate KIRO reported that about 2 feet of dirt had been excavated and no bones were found. Police did not say why they earlier stated that they had found human remains when they had not even seen any.

"Right now, we haven't found anything except for these scents that these dogs are picking up," West Valley City Police Lt. Bill Merritt told KIRO-TV. "We have not come across bones."

Because the site is on government land, a federal anthropologist was brought in to examine the site Thursday to see if it was part of an ancient burial ground. Investigators then began sifting through what was described as a shallow grave as they searched for clues but had so far found nothing.

Investigators previously said that a federal anthropologist had determined the remains found in a remote area of central Utah were not ancient, but instead were much more recent.

When asked whether he was hopeful Susan Powell's remains would be found there, Merritt called it "50/50 at this point."

Authorities have been searching since Monday in the area near Topaz Mountain in Juab County. The site is about 135 miles southwest of the location where Powell was last seen at her home in West Valley City. It is also just about 30 miles south of where Powell's husband, Josh Powell, told police he took his two young children camping on the night his wife vanished.

Powell was 28 when she was reported missing Dec. 7, 2009, after she failed to show up for her stockbroker job. The case has cast a harsh spotlight on Powell's husband, Josh, who remains the only person of interest but has never been arrested or charged. Josh Powell denies killing his wife or having anything to do with her disappearance.

On Tv they didnt bother to say that "Soil at the site showed signs of a recent disturbance indicating remains would be less than 10 years old, they made it sound like a body had been there and was recently moved? Im still confused. I hope they find something to hang both of these monsters!

Delta, Ut. - On Friday, authorities continued to examine a shallow grave discovered in the central Utah desert in their search for missing woman Susan Powell. They also announced law enforcement is confident some type of remains will be found in 'that hole.'

Initially, authorities announced human remains had been found, but later backtracked on that statement, now saying they assumed remains would be discovered because cadaver dogs had hit on the spot.

“We are still very confident that there's some type of remains in that hole,” West Valley City Police Lt. Bill Merritt told KIROTV.

A federal anthropologist was brought to the land on Thursday and determined that the shallow grave was not part of an ancient burial ground and showed signs that it had been disturbed recently.

Authorities have been searching near Delta at the base of Topaz Mountain since Monday for any evidence regarding Susan's vanishing.

Rain halts efforts at Susan Powell search site

Topaz Mountain • Friday afternoon rains forced West Valley City police to shut down their search for signs of Susan Cox Powell, including efforts to sift through dirt dug in an area where cadaver dogs have indicated there are human remains.

A forensics team arrived here Friday morning and was looking for bone fragments or anything foreign to the area — such as clothing or jewelry — in the dirt before the rain hit just before 3 p.m. The team has the necessary equipment to protect the site from the elements, and efforts are hoped to resume again Saturday morning.

Investigators on Thursday dug an area about 2 feet wide and 1 foot deep at the site, but did not discover any bones. Further excavation was to resume once the dirt had been sifted, but that process went much slower than expected Friday, said West Valley City Police Lt. Bill Merritt.

"Unfortunately we discovered is going to be an extremely slow go if we do it this way," said Merritt. "As is stands we are probably not even a quarter of the way through of the dirt that has been pulled out," he added.

Although the technicians are trained in the processes, they are not specialists like forensic anthropologists are. West Valley City police have put in a call to the state Medical Examiner’s Office to see if they can get a forensic anthropologist out to the site who could more quickly determine whether there is something on the dirt or not.

Forensic teams are dealing with tiny pieces that all appear to be rocks, but could be something else, Merritt said.

"We have not held anything up that looks like it is going to be anything promising as of yet," Merritt said. "But at the same time, we need that trained eye to come out and confirm that."

An assembly line approach is needed and detectives have been asked to assist in the process, Merritt said. But even if manpower is increased, police still could be at the site for "a few more days," Merritt said.

Once the sifting process is finished, continued excavation will resume at the site, which Bureau of Land Management archaeologist Joelle McCarthy has determined is less than 10 years old based on soil disturbance.

"Hopefully we’ll start to find something [at the excavation site] the deeper we go," said Merritt said Friday morning. "If we don’t find anything we are going to have to make a decision. But the dogs are continuing to indicate inside the hole. That leads us to believe that there is something down there."

Cadaver dogs have been able to detect remains buried as much as 12 feet deep, said Merritt.

Susan Powell’s father, Chuck Cox, arrived here Friday afternoon and was taken to the dig site.

"I was able to see where they were excavating and what is going on," he said.

Cox said he feels his daughter is somewhere in a remote area, but not necessarily this one.

He said of the present search: "It’s very logical and it needs to be done, so I have every confidence in what they are doing. I have always known this was going to take a lot longer than people give it credit for. This is by no means a simple case."

That could be but I wonder what happens to bones in a fire. I also wonder just how deep he could have buried her in the dead of Winter. Wouldn't the ground have been frozen?

This case is strange and getting stranger.

I am very concerned when I read they are not trained in this kind of science and are looking for a certain person to verify what they are finding.

I say stop until everybody is in place. They could be doing a lot of harm.

I agree they need to leave everything there and get in a forensic
anthropologist - from what I have read thats who they use
when they find older remains. I think we know more than they do!

Forensics mystery: Is desert site Susan Powell’s grave?

By melinda Rogers
The Salt Lake Tribune

Updated 4 hours ago

As a forensics team sifts through dirt near Topaz Mountain, scientists in Salt Lake County are prepared to quickly process any clues they unearth in the search for missing West Valley City mother Susan Cox Powell.

Investigators hoping to catch bone fragments, clothing, or jewelry will use DNA technology to make any potential links to the missing woman. The process is one that Timothy Kupferschmid knows well.

Kupferschmid, executive director at South Salt Lake-City based Sorenson Forensics, has more than 20 years of experience in forensic DNA testing. His work on high-profile crime cases in Utah enables him to know the process that evidence will undergo if discovered.

"They have to dig very slowly and very meticulously because they’re treating it as a crime scene," said Kupferschmid, whose credentials include stints as a senior DNA analyst at the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory, lab director of the Maine State Police Crime Laboratory and forensic technical director at Salt Lake City-based Myriad Genetic Laboratories.

"If there are skeletal remains or clothing, they will collect those, package those and take the evidence to the Medical Examiner’s office in Salt Lake City."

What investigators discover will impact how long it will take to make any personal identifications, Kupferschmid said.

Should skeletal remains emerge, including a skull, an X-ray would be taken at the ME’s office and compared with dental X-rays of Powell’s, he said. A dentist could match dental records in as little as 30 minutes, he said.

If investigators don’t have a skull to work from or can’t match remains to dental records, they move on to DNA testing — a lab process that at its fastest takes three days with skeletal remains, Kupferschmid said.

When remains arrive at a lab, the first thing scientists do is extract DNA out of a bone. A chemical process applied to the bone dissolves calcium, and once the calcium is dissolved, scientists are left with a cellular material and then DNA, Kupferschmid said.

What comes next is a polymerase chain reaction, a process to amplify millions of copies of starting materials of DNA.

"We think about it as a molecular X-ray machine. We need to make more copies of it," he said.

Once the process has replicated DNA in a test tube and enough copies exist, they run the copies out in an instrument where DNA fragments are separated. A DNA profile is generated once the process is complete.

When DNA is processed, the next step is to compare the DNA results with Powell’s profile. The woman’s DNA was likely collected by investigators from samples in her home, such as a toothbrush or hairbrush, Kupferschmid said. If police failed to do that, they could now collect DNA from Powell’s children and do a "reverse maternity test," in which Powell’s DNA would potentially be determined because it matched that of her children, he said.

If the remains turn out not to be those of Powell, scientists can work with law enforcement to see if there is a DNA match to other missing persons cases.

If a skeleton is unearthed, anthropologists can assist in determining a person’s sex, race and what decade the bones are from, Kupfershmid said. Extracting bones from hundreds of years ago is easily doable with today’s technology — and a reason why missing soldiers from the Korean War and World War II are still being identified today, he noted.

Sorenson Forensics contracts out its services to many law enforcement agencies, and the state forensics lab also can provide technology needed in cases where fragments are discovered in soil, he said. The dozens of cases Kupferschmid’s business has assisted in include the 1998 slaying of 10-year-old Anna Palmer in Salt Lake City. After years of dead leads, advances in DNA technology allowed police to link fingernail clippings from the girl’s right hand to 32-year-old Matthew Breck, who lived down the street from Palmer in 1998.

Breck, arrested last year, is serving life without parole in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated murder in 3rd District Court last month.

The business has also performed international work, including DNA testing on victims of a 2010 airplane crash in Libya and the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia.

It’s not yet known if DNA will provide answers in the ongoing mystery of Powell’s fate.

Kupferschmid said the desert is working in investigators’ favor to help preserve potential evidence near Topaz Mountain.

"Dry is the best thing for DNA to preserve it. If there are personal effects like clothing, or a wedding band, or a watch or jewelry ... you have a fairly good opportunity to get a DNA profile from any items like that," he said.

Search at a possible gravesite picks up in Susan Cox Powell case

DELTA — The effort by West Valley police to sift through dirt dug out of a possible gravesite picked up significantly Saturday.

By noon, 60 to 75 percent of the dirt that had been dug up had been sifted through, and crews expected to resume actual digging by the afternoon, said West Valley Police Lt. Bill Merritt.

Since Wednesday, investigators have been digging and sifting through dirt near the base of Topaz Mountain in a remote area outside of Delta where cadaver dogs have positively indicated on an area with disturbed soil where there might be human remains buried underneath.

The process had been slow because of the need to sift through dirt that has already been dug up and check it for possible evidence.

Saturday, the department's forensics supervisor, who has a degree in anthropology, arrived at the scene to make the sifting process go much quicker, said Merritt. If she finds anything that could possibly be a bone fragment or piece of evidence, it will be bagged and taken back to Salt Lake City where the State Medical Examiner's forensic anthropologist can examine it.

The forensic anthropologist was unavailable for the next week, which is why she has not responded to the scene herself, Merritt said.

Associated Press reporter Jennifer Dobner was the lone reporter escorted by police, along with two photojournalists, to the dig site to act as a pool for the media. She said the area that police were digging was about 50 yards over a small hill off a dirt and gravel road and would not have been visible from the road.

Although police did not allow her to get close enough to see the actual ground that was being dug up, she described watching the process of how two teams of sifters were going through four mounds of dirt all marked with pink flags. The dirt is brought to the sifters after being carried over in 5-gallon buckets.

The teams used trays that were stacked on top of each other, one to collect bigger chunks of debris and the other smaller pieces. She described the process of shaking the trays back and forth and running hands through the dirt like preparing soil for a garden or sifting flour.

Any piece of debris determined to be interesting by the department's forensic supervisor, Amanda Clark, will be taken back to Salt Lake for further analysis. The remaining dirt is then put in marked piles.

Two officers who had been searching on ATVs all week were brought to the dig site Saturday to help sift through dirt. Two fresh cadaver dogs were also brought to the site. Both of those dogs hit positively on the dig area, bringing the total number of dogs who have indicated on the area to 11 out of 11.
digging is part of the continuing investigation into the disappearance of West Valley mother Susan Cox Powell. West Valley police, along with help from several agencies including the Juab and Millard county sheriff’s offices, have been searching the central Utah desert since Tuesday. The area is approximately 25 miles away from Simpson Springs in Tooele County where Josh Powell, Susan's husband, said he took their two children camping the night before she disappeared.

A police officer continues to search the Topaz Mountain area for missing Utah mother Susan Powell Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011, 50 miles northwest of Delta, Utah.
The day began for investigators Saturday with fog that reduced visibility in the area to about 500 feet. Large, heavy tarps were used to cover the dig site overnight, keeping it dry, he said.

Merritt said so far, the dogs continue to hit on the area that has yet to be dug up, but have not hit on the pile of dirt already shoveled out. The hole, as of Saturday morning, was about 2 1/2 feet deep, 2 feet wide and 3 feet long.

While officers continued investigating the apparent shallow grave, others continued searching the area. The search Saturday morning was about 10 to 15 miles away from the dig site, Merritt said. The Juab County Search and Rescue Team brought seven horses and four additional ATVs to the area Saturday, bringing the total number of people both searching and sifting on Saturday to about 40.

Chuck Cox, Susan's father who flew to Utah from his home in Puyallup, Wash., and was allowed to observe the dig site Friday, was not at the scene Saturday morning. He said, however, he did not plan to leave Utah until West Valley's investigation into the area around Topaz Mountain was completed.

Susan Cox Powell, 28, has been missing since Dec. 6, 2009. The night before she was reported missing, Josh Powell said he took their two young children camping in single-digit temperatures in a remote part of Tooele County in the middle of the night. When he returned a day and a half later, he said his wife was gone.

Josh Powell has been called a person of interest in the case because West Valley police say he has been uncooperative.

Police find charred wood at Susan Powell search site, end dig

BY ROXANA ORELLANA

Topaz Mountain • Hopes for an end to the mystery of Susan Cox Powell’s disappearance were cut short Saturday when police found what cadaver dogs here had been alerting their handlers to: charred wood apparently used to burn human remains.

About 100 pieces of wood ranging in size from a dime to a golf ball were dug out of the area, said West Valley City Lt. Bill Merritt. It is believed the wood would have been used to destroy human remains, he said.

"There’s a very good possibility that this at one point or another was a crime scene," said Merritt. "Whether it’s linked to ours, we don’t know."

But detectives are confident enough they won’t find anything else at the dig site and are stopping excavation, said Merrit. The hole by Saturday was just over 2 feet deep, 3 feet long, and 2 feet wide, he said. A forensic specialist will now examine the wood.

"We are very disappointed, we are frustrated," said Merritt of Saturday’s outcome after days of effort at the dig site. "We were hoping that this would be the answer everyone was looking for."

Cadaver dogs have not given any indication dirt already removed from the site —painstakingly sifted by a forensic supervisor, two forensic technicians, a police officer and a firefighter — contains any remains, Merritt said.

Hopes had run high for some that Susan Powell’s resting place might have been found. This remote area is about 30 miles away from where Josh Powell, the only person of interest police have named in his wife’s disappearance, says he took his two young sons camping the night his wife disappeared from their West Valley City home.

Police have said Josh Powell liked to gem hunt — and family and friends have confirmed that Josh and Susan Powell had visited the area on previous family excursions.

A grid search of the area by police and horse back riders, who joined search efforts Saturday, will continue Sunday. A determination will be made Sunday about whether the search will continue, according to Merritt.

Searchers on horseback were checking for any evidence in higher areas as others driving all terrain vehicles focused on spots closer to roads. The dig site was just about 50 yards off of a road, according to an Associated Press reporter allowed to visit the scene.

West Valley City police recently conducted a search in the desert around Ely, Nev., and over the past months have conducted numerous searches in Tooele County.

Powell, 28, has been missing since Dec. 6, 2009, when her husband reported her missing from their West Valley City home. Josh Powell has said he had taken the couple’s young sons, then ages 2 and 4, on a winter camping trip to Simpson Springs in Tooele County and returned home to find his wife gone without a trace.

Now, I Really DO believe he burnt her body. He had Plenty of time w/two sleeping children. There mere thought that while Susan's children were sleeping, he was setting her body on fire makes me sick to my stomach. I think he killed her before - probably at the home..thus..the wet spot that we Still don't know what it contained - and the fan.

JP is an avid camper and I think he had this planned out well in advance. MOO!

Searchers dig up what looks like charred wood during search for Susan Powell

'It's not the hard evidence everyone wanted,' police say
Published: Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011 7:19 p.m. MDT
By Pat Reavy, Deseret News

DELTA — West Valley police Saturday completed their digging at what they originally suspected was a disturbed gravesite and removed about 100 small pieces of what appeared to be charred wood.

Once the pieces were removed from the hole near Topaz Mountain that investigators had been digging since Wednesday, cadaver dogs trained to detect human decomposition stopped indicating there was something still in the hole and reacted to the collected pile of pieces.

"These charred pieces had something to do with decomposition," said West Valley Police Lt. Bill Merritt.

That means at some point, the charred pieces very likely came in contact with either blood or decomposing flesh or clothing that contained some of that material, he said.

As for how human decomposition got on the charred pieces, Merritt said, "There are so many different scenarios of what it could be."

It was unlikely the apparent wood gave the cadaver dogs a "false positive," Merritt stated. The cadaver dogs are trained to detect human decomposition as opposed to flakes of dead skin. He also noted it was interesting that the charred pieces were found buried about 2 ½ feet in the ground.

Merritt said the area was likely a crime scene at some point. Although he noted the charred pieces appeared to have been fairly recent, there was no way to tell how long they had been there.

The discovery ended several days of digging after nearly a dozen cadaver dogs "hit" on an area in a remote part of central Utah near Topaz Mountain outside of Delta. The discovery was made while police were searching for clues in the case of missing West Valley mother Susan Cox Powell.

The search of the area will continue Sunday. Merritt said it was possible additional police agencies would join and there could be a very large search effort.

As for the hole they had been digging in and sifting through for four days, it is now cleared. "There is nothing else that can be brought out of that hole," the lieutenant said.

Saturday evening, a hole about 2 ½ feet deep, 2 feet wide and 3 feet long was all that remained about 50 yards off a dirt and gravel road where the digging occurred. Most of the charred pieces range from about the size of a dime to a golf ball, Merritt said. The pieces will be taken to the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office for analysis.

Although that hole has now been cleared, Merritt said police were as frustrated as everyone else.

"It's not the hard evidence everyone wanted," he said.

Since Wednesday, investigators have been digging and sifting through the dirt. The department's forensics supervisor, Wendy Clark, who has a degree in anthropology, arrived at the scene Saturday to make the sifting process go much quicker.

Before the charred pieces were found and investigators cleared the scene, Associated Press reporter Jennifer Dobner and two photo journalists were escorted by police to the dig site to act as representatives for the media. She said the area where police were digging was about 50 yards over a small hill off a dirt and gravel road and would not have been visible from the road.

She described watching the process of how two teams of sifters were going through four mounds of dirt all marked with pink flags. The dirt is brought to the sifters after being carried over in five-gallon buckets.

The teams used trays that were stacked on top of each other, one to collect bigger chunks of debris and the other smaller pieces. She described the process of shaking the trays back and forth and running hands through the dirt like preparing soil for a garden or sifting flour.

Two officers who had been searching on ATVs all week were brought to the dig site Saturday to help sift through dirt. Two fresh cadaver dogs were also brought to the site. Both of those dogs hit positively on the dig area — making 11 of 11 cadaver dogs that indicated there was human decomposition in the area.

West Valley police, along with help from several agencies including the Juab and Millard County sheriff's offices, have been searching the central Utah desert since Tuesday. The area is approximately 25 miles away from Simpson Springs in Tooele County where Josh Powell, Susan's husband, said he took their two children camping the night before she disappeared.

Josh Powell is considered a person of interest in the case because police say he has not been cooperative in their investigation.

While officers continued investigating the suspected shallow grave, others continued searching other nearby areas. The search Saturday was about 10 to 15 miles away from the dig site, Merritt said. The Juab County Search and Rescue Team brought seven horses and four additional ATVs to the area, bringing the total number of people both searching and sifting on Saturday to about 40.

Chuck Cox, Susan's father who flew to Utah from his home in Puyallup, Wash., and was allowed to observe the dig site Friday, was not at the scene Saturday. He said, however, he did not plan to leave Utah until West Valley's investigation into the area around Topaz Mountain was completed.

Susan Cox Powell, 28, has been missing since Dec. 6, 2009.

Do you know how long it takes to burn a body? It takes hours to cremate a body; we looked it up once back on CSO.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cremation

The box containing the body is placed in the retort and incinerated at a temperature of 760 to 1150 °C (1400 to 2100 °F).[9] During the cremation process, a large part of the body (especially the organs) and other soft tissue are vaporized and oxidized by the intense heat; gases released are discharged through the exhaust system. The process usually takes 90 minutes to two hours, with larger bodies taking longer time.

An average human body takes from two to three hours to burn completely

Wrap I remember we also read that it would be almost impossible for someone to get that kind of heat from a fire that's not in a crematorium-like environment. Like a bonfire or a fire out in the open.

Wouldnt it be difficult for him to burn anything in the snow? Are there any enclosed areas like a mint or cave he could have used to burn the body
where smoke wouldnt be seen?

Exactly. I think the search is difficult because of the amount of time that has went by not because she was burned. Although I do think it is possible that her body was burned and then the remains were buried. I am glad to see LE being so diligent in the efforts to find the smallest of bones.

I think that he is such an avid camper that he knew how to make a pit and burn her. Never thought of this before until this Topaz Mountain (love that name!!) search. I think JP and Daddyo are better at murder than at marriage.
