Missing former student located with friend in central California
Police in the city of Glendale, Calif., said Thursday that Nancy Salas, a former UCLA student who was reported missing under suspicious circumstances, has been found alive and well in Merced, a city in central California. Police told media she was misleading her parents about her status at UCLA.
Salas was a fourth-year student and sociology major who was last enrolled at UCLA in fall 2008, according to UCLA registrar's records.
Before police called off the search for Salas this morning, current and former UCLA students were organizing search efforts using social networking sites.
Salas was last seen at about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, when she left her home in Glendale to go jogging in a nearby canyon. Salas' family reported her missing after she did not return home, according to Glendale police officials (police report).
A Facebook page and a website had been set up to enable the public to assist in search efforts. According to the Facebook page, a group of former and current UCLA students were planning to distribute fliers on campus and in the area where Salas was last seen.
Anyone with information about Salas' disappearance is asked to contact Glendale police at 818-548-4911.

Police: Woman whose disappearance prompted massive search found in Merced
A 22-year-old woman whose disappearance led to a massive canyon search in Southern California has been found alive in downtown Merced.
The missing woman, Nancy Salas, walked into Carpet One at 312 W. Main Street around 11:00 a.m. Thursday, according to Lt. Andre Matthews, Merced police spokesman.
The Sun-Star learned Salas was in tears and asked Melanie Mittelsteadt, showroom coordinator for Carpet One, to call 911.
"I could tell she had been crying," Middlesteadt said. Salas talked with emergency dispatchers until police arrived. During Salas' conversation with the dispatcher, she mentioned something about a knife and a kidnapping, Middlesteadt said.
Salas was wearing black windbreaker pants, running shoes and a T-Shirt, with her hair pulled back. She didn't appear to be injured, Middlesteadt said.
Matthews said Glendale police detectives arrived in Merced on Thursday. "Our role is going to be to assist the Glendale Police Department with whatever leads or facts they can determine, based on the information they get from the young lady," Matthews said.
Salas' appearance in Merced is the latest wrinkle in an already baffling case.
Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said Salas vanished Wednesday morning after telling her family that she was going for a run in Chevy Chase Canyon in Southern California. She left her cell phone, keys and car at the family home.
Lorenz says Salas is healthy. He says it's unclear how or why Salas ended up in Merced but that it doesn't appear any crime was committed.
Lorenz said earlier that Salas deceived her family by telling them she was attending UCLA, although the school says she hadn't been enrolled since 2008. Lorenz says the family had been planning a graduation party for her when she vanished. "There is obviously deception; I don't want to call it a double life," Lorenz said.
He said her relatives said Salas had no family or boyfriend problems that might have prompted her disappearance. Lorenz says Salas' brother is being questioned.
Police, rangers, bloodhounds and a helicopter searched late into the night without success, calling off crews early Thursday. Friends and family, however, continued to walk the streets, passing out flyers with her photograph as detectives combed cell phone and computer records for clues.
Salas, a fourth-year student and sociology major, was last enrolled at UCLA in fall 2008, according to university registrar's records.
Lorenz said Salas' family was "adamant" that she was about to graduate from the University of California, Los Angeles, and had been planning a graduation party. Friends claimed that she was enrolled at least part-time.
Brenda Li Gonzalez, a longtime friend, said Salas told her that she was applying to East Coast schools to obtain a master's degree in public health and that she hoped to work for the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Deception
Salas had initially been been described as third-year UCLA student.
But as it turns out, Salas hadn't been attending school in years.
"Our records show that she was a fourth-year sociology student last enrolled in 2008," said UCLA spokesman Phil Hampton.
According to Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz, Salas had been deceiving her parents and her friends.
"There's obviously a deception," Lorenz said. "I don't want to go so far as to call it a double life."
Her mother and father had been planning a graduation party for her when she disappeared.
Lorenz also says Salas' brother is being questioned.
