(CNN) -- Covering her face with her long dark hair to avoid television cameras, a Southern California woman accused of cutting off her husband's penis and throwing it into a garbage disposal appeared in an Orange County courtroom Wednesday.

In her first court appearance, Catherine Kieu Becker mumbled her response to the judge when asked if she understood she was due back in court for arraignment on July 22.

An initial police investigation alleges that Becker put a drug or poison in her husband's dinner Monday evening to make him sleepy.

"The victim went to lie down and he woke up tied to the bed with his wife tugging his clothes off," police said. "The suspect grabbed the victim's penis and cut it off."

Becker, 48, is charged with felony counts of torture and aggravated mayhem in the attack.

"The charges we have filed are some the most serious charges we could file short of someone being dead," said Susan Kang Schroeder with the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

Becker also could face additional charges.

"We're looking at toxicology reports," Schroeder told CNN affiliate KTLA. "They have not come in yet and we don't have the evidence at this point to charge her with the poisoning."

Becker is being held in the Orange County Jail.

Becker told police he "deserved it" when they arrived at the scene after she called 911, the police report said. The couple is going through a divorce.

Her husband underwent emergency surgery at the UCI Medical Center, police said.

The California woman accused of cutting off her husband's penis now faces formal charges that could land her in jail for life.

The Orange County District Attorney's office on Wednesday charged Catherine Kieu Becker, 48, with two felony counts -- torture and aggravated mayhem -- with sentence enhancement for causing great bodily injury, said Susan Schroeder, the DA's chief of staff.

Becker received a court-appointed attorney, police said. Her arraignment was postponed until July 22, and she will also have a bail hearing at her next court appearance.

She faces a maximum sentence of life in prison with parole, and is currently being held in the Orange County Jail without bail.

After Becker, a real estate broker, laced her 60-year-old husband's dinner with an unknown drug, he lay down believing something was wrong with the food, said Lt. Jeff Nightengale of Garden Grove, Calif., police.

Her husband then woke up tied to the bed as Becker cut off his penis with a knife, Nightengale told ABC News on Tuesday. She threw the genitalia in the garbage disposal and turned the disposal on.

The victim's ex-wife, Dr. Manal Soliman, was in disbelief when she heard the news of her ex-husband's castration. Soliman was married to him for eight years before the couple divorced in 2002. She has never met her ex-husband's wife.

"He's a really nice person and I know he truly cared for her a lot," said Soliman. "I heard they got to know each other at church. I don't know how a churchgoing woman could do something like that."

Her husband filed for divorce in May, citing "irreconcilable differences." Nightengale said Becker was "upset" about the divorce, but could not confirm why she wanted to cut off her husband's manhood. The couple has no children.

After cutting off his penis, Becker eventually called 911 to ask for medical assistance. When firefighters and police arrived on scene, Becker told officials that her husband "deserved it," said Nightengale.

Police found the man, who remains unidentified, tied to the bed and "bleeding profusely."

Her husband was rushed to University of California at Irvine Medical Center for treatment.

"Police were able to recover portions of the penis from the garbage disposal," Nightengale said, but it was unclear whether doctors would be able to reattach them.

"He is in amazingly good spirits considering what happened," said Nightengale on Wednesday.

Los Angeles (CNN)[/b] -- A southern California woman convicted of cutting off the penis of her then-husband and throwing it into a garbage disposal was given a life sentence Friday with the possibility of parole after seven years, authorities said.

Catherine Kieu, 50, of Garden Grove, California, and her husband were going through a divorce at the time of the July 2011 incident. The couple married in December 2009, but in May 2011 the husband filed for divorce, which was granted in August 2011, according to Orange County court records.
Kieu laced her husband's dinner with the sleep medication Ambien after they had an argument over a friend possibly staying with them at a later date, the Orange County district attorney's office said in a statement Friday.
When the husband went to sleep, Kieu tied his legs and arms to the four corners of the bed, and when he awoke, she pulled down his pants and severed his penis with a knife, prosecutors charged.
Kieu then threw the severed penis into the garbage disposal, turned it on and mutilated it, prosecutors alleged. Kieu then called 911 about how her husband was bleeding, and he was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery, authorities said.
The victim's name has not been made public because he is a victim of spousal abuse, police said.
The ex-husband, 60, described the trauma in an impact statement during Friday's sentencing, according to a statement by the prosecutor's office.
"The convicted (person) viciously deprived me of part of my life and identity," the ex-husband told the court. "Then, as is routine in cases of violence that involve something sexual, the victim must endure, at the hands of the defense, a second attack. This was a cruel and calculated violation of a person's body and mind. I now struggle with what is before me. She has torn off my identity as a man. She has caused doubt in my belief in good. She has betrayed my trust in people."
On April 29, a jury convicted Kieu of one felony count of torture, one felony count of aggravated mayhem, and a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a knife, prosecutors said.
The Vietnam-born Kieu is also known as Que Anh Tran, court papers said. She and her ex-husband had no children, divorce papers said.
During the trial, Kieu's attorney said she suffered mental health issues, including depression, and the lawyer argued she shouldn't be found guilty, the prosecutor's office said.
The Orange County case was widely compared to the1993 attack against John Wayne Bobbitt by his then-wife, Lorena, who cut off his penis with an 8-inch carving knife while he slept.
Lorena Bobbitt then drove away, tossing the penis out her car window. The penis was eventually found and surgically reattached.
Lorena Bobbitt was later found innocent by reason of insanity. During her testimony, she tearfully described her life at the hands of what she described as her abusive husband.
In a separate trial, John Wayne Bobbitt was acquitted of sexually assaulting his wife. He later made adult films.

Los Angeles - A US man whose estranged wife cut off his penis accused her on Wednesday of effectively murdering him, recounting his horror as she severed the organ and threw it into a garbage disposal machine.

The 60-year-old man said he would never have sex again after his wife - who said she "wanted him to stop hurting her with his penis" - drugged him and tied him to a bed, before taking a kitchen knife to his manhood.

Catherine Kieu Becker, aged 50, is on trial in Los Angeles charged with torture, bodily injury with a knife and aggravated mayhem over the alleged attack at their home in Garden Grove, southeast of Los Angeles.

"She murdered me that night," said the victim, identified in court only as Glen, recounting the events of 11 July 2011.

The couple had been married for less than a year in 2010 when he told her he wanted a divorce, although they continued living together for financial reasons.

But she accused him of being "hyper-sexual" and seeing too much of an ex-girlfriend, and planted audio devices round their home to try to catch him out - bugs which ended up recording the horrific alleged attack.

The victim said Kieu made a tofu and chicken dish - which lawyers said was laced with the insomnia drug Zolpidem - on the fateful night, while she ate a salad. Soon afterwards he felt groggy and went to bed early.

His next memory was waking up with his arms and feet tied to the corners of the bed. His wife was at the foot of the bed.

Recalling the moment she mutilated him, he said Kieu "pulled on my shorts. I didn't really understand what she was doing...I looked down and I saw something metallic, silver, shiny. I still didn't know what was going on. 

"I felt her grab hold of my penis. I was very surprised. All of a sudden I felt a very sharp pain and she had cut my penis off and then threw it on the carpet next to the bed."

At first he felt "excruciating" pain. "But I must've gone into shock because the pain subsided," he said, adding that he recalled his wife picking up his penis and leaving the room.

"The next thing I heard was the garbage disposal... I don't know how long that went on - a long time," he said.

A short time later Kieu returned and he asked her to call for an ambulance. She held the phone up so he could talk to the 911 dispatcher. She put a towel over his groin, which was bleeding heavily. 

He spent a few days in hospital and underwent surgery but "not reconstructive surgery," in an operation "to make it usable as far as going to the bathroom.

"Of course, I will never have a sex life again," he said. "The healing process may never be completely finished. My mental state is improving, but it may never be what it was before."

Her lawyer Frank Bittar said Kieu had suffered a "lifetime of trauma" beginning with her childhood in civil war-torn Vietnam.

After moving to California she got married for a first time in 1984, but agreed to an "amicable" divorce in 1997. "She's not jealous and she's not wicked and she's not a black widow," Bittar insisted.

She married her second husband in December 2009. He was "hyper-sexual," using erectile dysfunction drugs and forcing her into "painful" sexual positions, the attorney said.

"You're going to learn that in Catherine's mind, she severed his penis because she wanted him to stop hurting her with his penis," he said in his opening statement.   

If convicted, Kieu faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
