Jada Justice murder/ Tkachik PLEADS GUILTY & will testify against Castillo at her August trial
Fueled on heroin and fear, Jada Justice's baby sitter and her boyfriend tried to burn the toddler's lifeless body before encasing her in concrete and dumping her into a swamp, authorities charge.
Engelica Castillo, 18, and her boyfriend, Tim Tkachik, 24, both of Hobart, were charged Friday with murdering the 2-year-old Portage toddler. They also were charged with two counts of neglect of a dependent, battery and false informing.
"This tragic ending is not the outcome we were all hoping for," Prosecutor Bernard Carter said Friday in a statement. "The relentless efforts by all involved shows that Northwest Indiana has a big heart."
In their case against Castillo and Tkachik, prosecutors describe the two in a frantic, two-day spree of varying attempts to dispose of Jada while making intermittent stops to purchase and use heroin and marijuana.

Lake Criminal Court Judge Thomas Stefaniak Jr. has set Dec. 7 as the trial date for 18-year-old Engelica Castillo, accused of murder in the slaying of Portage toddler Jada Justice.
Castillo's case led off Stefaniak's criminal court call on Thursday with Castillo calmly pleading innocent to the multiple charges she faces in connection to the disappearance of the girl whose body was found burnt and encased in concrete in a swamp nine days after an intense search by authorities, family and friends.

This is a horrible crime. I hope she gets the death penalty!!!!!!!!!!!!
Castillo, 19, and her boyfriend, Timothy Tkachik, 24, both of Hobart, are charged with murder, neglect of a dependent, battery and false informing. The child died of blunt force trauma in June, authorities said.
The child's mother told police she left Jada with Castillo for a two-week stay, according to Lake County, Ind., Prosecutor Bernard A. Carter.
On June 18, Castillo told police she left Jada in the car at a Gary gas station when she went inside to get milk, and that when she came out the girl was gone, the prosecutor's office said in a statement. On June 25, Tkachik led investigators to a site in LaPorte, where the child's body was found burned and encased in concrete, the statement said.
Castillo's trial is set for December. Tkachik faces a maximum of 65 years in prison. Both are being held in the Lake County Jail without bond.

March 9, 2010 - Federal heroin defendant linked to Jada Justice case arrested again
An admitted heroin distributor arrested last summer with two suspects in the murder of Portage 2-year-old Jada Justice was arrested and jailed again last week after an alleged violation of the conditions of his pretrial release in his federal drug case.
Christopher G. Osborne, of the Valparaiso area, was arrested Friday in Hammond by U.S. marshals, according to an executed arrest warrant filed in Hammond federal court. The warrant accuses Osborne of committing a nonspecific violation of the conditions of the pretrial release he was granted pending the resolution of his federal heroin case.
Osborne's lawyer, John Martin, could not be reached Monday for comment.
Osborne is being held at Porter County Jail.
Osborne was arrested in June at his Center Township home along with murder suspects Engelica Castillo and Timothy Tkachik, both of Hobart. Tkachik and Castillo are charged with killing Justice, a Portage toddler. Before police found her body, Justice was the target of an exhaustive local search that started after Castillo, the child's baby sitter and cousin, reported the child abducted from a Gary gas station. Prosecutors claim Castillo beat the girl, and Tkachik, her boyfriend, helped dispose of the toddler's body.
Osborne does not face any charges related to Justice's killing, but he was indicted in August on two counts of heroin distribution and a heroin distribution conspiracy charge. Osborne signed a plea agreement with federal prosecutors and pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charge in October. He faces as many as 20 years in federal prison, according to the plea agreement.
The case against Osborne's federal co-defendant and former housemate, Susan L. Yamashita, remains pending.
Lawyers involved in the upcoming murder trial said they were unsure whether Osborne could be a witness.

Castillo faces August trial in Jada's killing
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Attorneys will block out more than two weeks in August for the trial of Engelica Castillo, the Hobart woman charged with the murder of her 2-year-old cousin, Jada Justice.
Lake County Superior Court Judge Thomas Stefaniak Jr. put off scheduling a date for the high-profile trial because Lemuel Stigler, one of Castillo's two court-appointed attorneys, was not present at Tuesday's hearing be-cause of a schedule conflict.
Defense attorney John Maksimovich and Dave Urbanski, trial supervisor for Prosecutor Bernard Carter, discussed starting the trial in early August.
A scheduling hearing is set for June 7.
Over objections from prosecutors, Stefaniak ruled that prospective jurors would be asked to fill out a longer than normal questionnaire that would query them about their attitudes about the sentence of life without parole that Castillo faces if found guilty.
Castillo and her boyfriend, Timothy Tkachik, have pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, two counts of neglect of a dependent, battery and false informing.
Prosecutors allege Castillo beat the toddler to death then, with Tkachik, tried to incinerate the body.
When the girl's body didn't catch fire, the two allegedly tried to encase the tiny corpse in a block of cement, which they then dumped in a swampy area near rural Otis.
Castillo then reported to police the girl had been taken from her parked car while she bought milk.
Castillo's cousin, Melissa Swiontek, had left her daughter Jada with the 18-year-old Castillo several days earlier.
Tkachik, who is being tried separately, allegedly confessed and led police to Jada's body. Tkachik has an omnibus hearing scheduled for June 21.

Timothy Tkachik pleaded guity today and will testify against Castillo
Timothy Tkachik, co-defendant in last summer's slaying of Portage toddler Jada Justice, pleaded guilty to two counts of neglect of a dependent Monday morning for his role in the child's death.
The two counts of neglect of a dependent are both Class A felonies, which carry sentences ranging from 20 to 50 years each, which would be served concurrently.
The plea agreement was taken under advisement by Lake Criminal Court Judge Thomas Stefaniak Jr., who set sentencing for Sept. 10.
Stefaniak sought assurance from Tkachik that he understood the agreement required his testimony against co-defendant Engelica Castillo.
Prosecutors last June charged Tkachik, 24, and his girlfriend, 19-year-old Castillo, with murder, two counts of neglect of a dependent, battery and false informing after the child's body was found burned and encased in concrete in a LaPorte County swamp.
Tkachik initially had confirmed Castillo's story that Jada had been abducted from a gas station in Gary's Glen Park neighborhood. He later told police Castillo killed the 2-year-old, and he helped dispose of the body, authorities said at the time of charging.
In the plea bargain reached with prosecutors, Tkachik admits to participating in beating the child, delivering several blows to the girl's head and holding the child down while Castillo repeatedly struck her with a belt.
Tkachik said the beatings June 12 through 16 last summer began when the child irritated Castillo by, among other things, dumping a package of drink mix and spilling a container of syrup.
In the plea agreement, Tkachik contends Castillo responded by repeatedly striking the child and admits to ultimately joining in.
The child stopped breathing from her injuries while the couple were traveling in a car with neither obtaining medical attention for the girl, authorities said. Instead, the couple allowed the child to die in the back seat of the car where they left her body.
Castillo, who is scheduled to go to trial Aug. 2, faces a potential sentence of life without parole if convicted.

Re: Jada Justice murder/ Tkachik PLEADS GUILTY & will testify against Castillo at her August trial
This is one of those cases - like Shaniya Davis - that sticks with you. I cannot begin to imagine the torture litte Jada endured. These people are not people...they are animals. How could anyone beat a child, then burn them? OMG, it makes me sick.
