Hospital officials say a 3-year-old Post Falls boy is in critical condition, and police say it is because his babysitter injured him.
On Monday, Post Falls Police officers responded to the 500 block of North Elm Road for a report of a 3 year-old male child who was breathing but unresponsive.
Family members say the boy is 3-year-old Cohen Johnson.
Officers say the 25-year-old babysitter told them she was removing the boy's urine soaked clothes when he went "limp" and unresponsive.
Johnson was immediately taken to Kootenai Medical Center, but soon flown to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane when the full extent of his injuries came to light.
Hospital officials say a C.T. scan revealed a bleeding skull fracture. Johnson underwent emergency surgeries and remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Because hospital officials believed the injury was suspicious, detectives interviewed the babysitter, who soon admitted to becoming frustrated with Johnson after he urinated himself, and shoved him to the ground.
Officers say the babysitter is friend of the family. Charges are pending in this case.
According to police, another child under 2-years-old age was also in the home, but was uninjured.

This is very sad! According to the babysitter, his death was "accidental" (she shoved him & he fell & hit his head), but kids fall & bump their heads all the time and don't die from it. I wonder if there is more to the story (ie. prolonged abuse)? I guess we will soon find out!

Welcome to VH, James! Thank you for sharing some of your memories of little Cohen. I pray that you & his parents will find peace & comfort during this painful time!

A 25-year-old baby sitter accused of murder declined to speak with investigators after her arrest Friday and has asked for an attorney.
She’s being held without bail at the Kootenai County Jail and is expected to appear in court Tuesday.

Skogen had cared for the boy since June. Her husband apparently knows the boy’s father from high school, Haug said.

Cohen’s parents are separated, and Skogen had been caring for him at her home on North Elm Road since about June while his parents worked during the day. Cohen apparently wet his pants while on Skogen’s couch, which angered her, Haug said.

Haug said the boy “flew across the room” and hit the back of his head on a concrete floor. He was taken to Kootenai Medical Center, where a CT scan revealed a bleeding skull fracture. He was airlifted to Providence Sacred Heart in Spokane, where he was pronounced dead Friday at 1:21 p.m. Skogen was arrested shortly after.

Under Idaho law, homicides involving children under 12 are to be charged as first-degree murder.

This sentence is missing a key point: the boy didn't "fly" across the room by himself... he was whacked/thrown/flung with great force by his enraged babysitter!!

Normal Baby sitter in boy’s death jailed on $1 million bond

Post by Nama on Tue Oct 12, 2010 10:14 pm

A Post Falls baby sitter accused of murdering a 3-year-old boy will stay in jail on $1 million bail, a judge ruled today.

Amanda L. Skogen, 25, replied “uh, yes,” when asked if she understood the charge against her: first-degree murder, punishable by up to life in prison or the death penalty.

Prosecutor Barry McHugh said Skogen is a flight risk and emphasized that while she cooperated with investigators, she didn’t confess until failing a polygraph exam.

McHugh said Skogen was on her knees when she shoved Cohen Johnson “in a very violent manner, causing him to fall back and hit his head.”

“The injuries were immediately debilitating,” McHugh said.

Skogen called 911 on Oct. 4 to report Cohen unresponsive and not breathing. She eventually confessed to shoving the boy after he wet his pants.

Cohen’s parents are separated, and Skogen had been caring for him at her home on North Elm Road since about June while his parents worked during the day.

Skogen had cared for the boy since June. Her husband apparently knows the boy’s father from high school, police said.

Cohen was taken off life support on Friday. Skogen, who has no criminal history or arrest record, was booked into jail on a first-degree murder charge shortly after.

A public defender has been appointed to represent her.

Prosecutors have 60 days to decide whether to seek the death penalty. Skogen was charged with first-degree murder because Cohen’s death involved the aggravated battery of a person under 12.

Normal On at least three different occasions Cohen was injured while in Amanda Skogen’s care, according to court documents released Tuesday

Post by Nama on Tue Oct 12, 2010 10:18 pm

On at least three different occasions Cohen was injured while in Amanda Skogen’s care, according to court documents released Tuesday. Skogen, according to those same documents, reported to detectives that Cohen had been bruised by falling into furniture and running into her dog.
In one case three-year-old Cohen told his grandmother that he’d been hit by Amanda, who denied any wrongdoing.
In fact it was only after failing a polygraph test and being confronted about the boy's injuries last week did Skogen admit to pushing Cohen. Skogen told detectives Cohen was dropped off at her house with a stomach ache, he threw up while they'd gone out to run errands and he wet himself while taking a nap.
A Post Falls Police report says Skogen confessed to losing her temper while trying to change him out of wet clothing. Skogen explained to detectives that she shoved Cohen with both hands in the chest knocking him over. She heard a loud crack when his head hit the ground.
Skogen then told detectives she tried to splash water on his face to revive him and then called 911.

The police report is 30 pages long and includes more information about how Amanda Skogen allegedly abused little Cohen Johnson that led to his death.
Showing no emotion, Skogen appeared before a judge in Kootenai County.
Cohen’s family was in court but didn’t want to give any statements.

Normal Baby sitter in boy’s death: ‘It was all my fault’

Post by Nama on Tue Oct 12, 2010 10:40 pm

A Post Falls baby sitter accused of murdering a 3-year-old boy told police after failing a polygraph test: “I hurt a poor little defenseless boy…And it was all my fault,” documents released Tuesday say.

Prosecutors have 60 days to decide whether to seek the death penalty against Skogen, who has no criminal history.

Polcie reports describe Skogen as a native of Riverton, Wyo., who is unemployed. News archives show she married Matthew D. Skogen, who is the son of Spokane County sheriff’s Deputy David Skogen, in 2004.

The couple were at the deputy’s home after Cohen was hospitalized Monday night; police reached Amanda there and she agreed to go to the police station in Post Falls for an interview.

Skogen initially denied hurting the boy and said she believed he had the flu and fell while she was changing his wet pants. The boy showed no obvious signs of trauma, and police said the home appeared “clean and well kept.” Officers described Skogen as ‘very shaken and concerned.” She traveled with the boy’s mother to the hospital and sent text messages that night inquiring about his condition.

Medics first thought Cohen ingested a poisonous material, but a doctor at Kootenai Medical Center discovered two skull fractures she said were “not accidental.”

The boy also had bruising on his face that the doctor said was caused by someone grabbing his face and pulling his right ear. Cohen also had a healing black eye, but Skogen said it was caused by Cohen colliding with her dog.

She later said she became “frustrated and angry” with Cohen after he urinated in his pants and on her as the two were napping on her couch. She said she shoved him and he fell back and hit his head, which made a “cracking noise,” according to a police report. She told police she slapped the boy and shook his face to try to revive him.

“Amanda said she most likely did this out of nervousness and the knowledge that she had just done something terrible,” according to the report.

Cohen’s 2-year-old sister was present at the time.

Police say Skogen had cared for the boy, who his father said called her “Aunt Amanda,” since June. Matt Skogen knows the boy’s father, Jeremy R. Johnson, from high school, according to the police report.

Cohen’s parents have declined to speak to media but thanked Cohen’s supporters and Sacred Heart staff in a prepared statement Tuesday.

“We will remember Cohen not for the way he left us, but for the brilliant life he gave us,” his parents wrote. “We sincerely hope others might do the same.”

Johnson described Cohen to police as “the most amazing child” who was active and had good communication skills.

Normal Post Falls Babysitter Pleads Guilty To Killing 3-Year-Old

Post by Nama on Sun Jan 02, 2011 1:44 am

A 26-year-old northern Idaho woman who acknowledged shoving a 3-year-old boy in her care, causing a fatal head injury, has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.
Amanda L. Skogen, of Post Falls, entered her plea Tuesday as part of an agreement with Kootenai County prosecutors. First District Judge Fred Gibler scheduled sentencing for Feb. 28.
County prosecutor Barry McHugh said Skogen agreed to plead guilty to the voluntary manslaughter charge after he said he would seek to reinstate the first-degree murder charge, the Coeur d'Alene Press reports.
Prosecutors say Skogen got angry and pushed Cohen Johnson on Oct. 4 after the boy wet himself and urine got on her. The boy fell back and hit his head, according to authorities.
Cohen died several days later, after being taken off life support at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Wash., where doctors said he was brain dead.
A Spokane County medical examiner testified that Cohen sustained a fractured skull.
Skogen was initially charged with first-degree murder, but a magistrate judge determined earlier this month that she should face a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter.
First District Court Magistrate Judge Clark A. Peterson found that while Skogen's actions had "incredibly grievous" consequences, they did not amount to murder.
Skogen faces up to 10 years in prison at her sentencing.

Normal Skogen Gets 13 Years For Child's Death

Post by Nama on Mon Mar 21, 2011 12:19 am

A packed courtroom Friday greeted Amanda Skogen, the 26-year-old Post Falls babysitter facing sentencing for the death of a 3-year-old toddler last fall.
For nearly six hours family and friends on both sides of the courtroom gave testimony on behalf of both 3-year-old Cohen Johnson and the defendant, Amanda Skogen, which culminated with Skogen giving a prepared statement to the court.
For the first time, Skogen offered words of remorse as she addressed the court, and the little boy's family.
“I want everyone to know that my actions on October 4th are no way a reflection of the way that I was raised or the way I've lived my life for the last 25 years,” Skogen said.
“I don't want people to think I hate children or continually wish them harm."
Judge Fred Gibler sentenced Skogen to 13 years in prison, with four years fixed. After that, the court will re-evaluate her case and determine how and if the remaining 9 will have to be served.
