Teen Couple Accused Of Setting Girl's Mom On Fire

An 11-year-old girl and her 15-year-old boyfriend are accused of setting the girl's mother on fire as she slept.

Clearwater police say the girl plotted with her boyfriend to kill her mother, 47.

Police say the two suspects poured gasoline on the victim's bedroom floor and bed as she slept in it, and then ignited it.

According to the police report, they took the victim's car, a 2007 Ford Focus, and fled the scene.

The mother was awakened by a smoke alarm and escaped from her home on Huntington Lane just after 1 a.m. Tuesday.

She sustained serious burns and smoke inhalation. She was taken to Morton Plant Hospital.

She has since been transported to Tampa General, where she was admitted to the burn unit. Her injuries are serious, but not life threatening.

Her daughter was placed under the Baker Act for psychiatric assessment. The girl's boyfriend was transported to the Pinellas County Juvenile Assessment Center.

Neighbors friendly with the family are shocked.

"My heart right now is just beating really fast. That's just not right," said neighbor Louie Otero.

The two juveniles are charged with attempted murder and arson resulting in serious injury.

Bay News 9 is not naming them because of their ages, in accordance with our crime guidelines.

The boy also faces a grand theft charge in connection to the victim's stolen car, which was recovered in a Clearwater church parking lot.

Police in Clearwater, Fla., say they have arrested an 11-year-old girl for allegedly trying to burn her mother to death.

Police spokeswoman Beth Watts said Tuesday the girl and her 15-year-old boyfriend have been charged with attempted murder and arson for allegedly setting the girl's home on fire in an effort to slay Nancy Broadhead, 48, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported.

The pair "plotted to basically set the mom on fire and leave her to die," Watts told the newspaper, alleging the two poured gasoline on Broadhead's bed early Tuesday and set it on fire as she slept.

The Times said Broadhead escaped and collapsed in the front yard, believing her daughter was inside the burning home, which was significantly damaged. She was taken to Tampa General Hospital to be treated for serious burns and smoke inhalation. Her condition was upgraded to fair Tuesday.

The newspaper said Broadhead was arrested for drunk driving and charged with neglecting the girl in 2002, later violating her probation by testing positive for marijuana use. Records indicated she was arrested in 2005 for allegedly hitting her daughter while intoxicated, but the charges were dropped.

The episode can be chalked up to "teenage angst," police spokeswoman Elizabeth Watts told the St. Petersburg Times .

The mother and daughter, who have an "extensive family history" of cases filed with the state Department of Children and Families, quarreled Monday night, the Tampa Tribune reported.

"It escalated ... when the mother confronted the daughter about stealing a few of her cigarettes," Watts told the newspaper.

As flames tore through the house, Broadhead collapsed in the front yard and screamed desperately "My baby! Where's my baby!" fearing that her daughter was still inside, the Times reported. Friends of the young couple said they planned to marry, according to the newspaper.

Both of the juveniles were charged with attempted murder and arson resulting in serious injury. Jack Ault, the 15-year-old boyfriend, will also stand for a grand theft charge related to stealing the victim's car. The girl, Samantha Broadhead, is being detained for psychiatric assessment after making statements that made detectives believe she may try to harm herself, Watts said.

On this story, Im outraged that this child was left in the care of her mother who was a drunk apparently and also probably abused her. Ill hold off on comments until we know more. I dont excuse this childs behavior but in some cases where children have been badly abused
(and wives as well) I have at least understood their actions.

The girl is currently being detained in a psychiatric facility because police believe she may attempt to harm herself.

The Broadheads reportedly have an "extensive family history" of cases filed with Florida's Department of Children and Families.

The mother was reportedly arrested on minor charges of child neglect seven years ago.

Maurice Cheatham, a neighbour of the 15-year-old boy, told reporters that police are also in close contact with the teen’s family.
"The cops stay over there all the time," he said.

Samantha Broadhead gets no jail time or criminal record after trying to kill her mom by setting her bed afire /Jack Ault sentenced to nine months to two and a half years in a juvenile facility/ Samantha's mother denied visit with Samantha Empty Girl who tried to kill mom had troubled family life

Post by Nama Wed Dec 30, 2009 5:04 pm

As authorities continue to sift through the family history of an 11-year-old girl accused of plotting to kill her mother by burning her alive, court records show that trouble brewed in the household long before the girl was even born.

Nancy Broadhead, the girl's mother, struggled with alcohol addiction and neglected her son Zachary, who was about 2 years old at the time, according to a paternity suit filed in 1995.

During a custody battle for Zachary, father John F. Busby told authorities Broadhead was constantly drunk and let their son wander through her Clearwater neighborhood unattended, court records show.

Broadhead accused Busby of being a deadbeat father with a history of alcohol and drug abuse, the documents state.

A guardian ad litem appointed to the case said Busby has had problems in the past but overcame his addictions while Broadhead had a drinking problem. The guardian ad litem, who called Zachary a bright, polite child, recommended that Busby get custody and Broadhead receive counseling.

In September 1996, a judge upheld that recommendation and added Broadhead should not be left alone with the child, court documents state.

Broadhead has also been accused in the past of abusing or neglecting her daughter, according to court records.

She was charged in July 2002 with driving under the influence of alcohol with her then 4-year-old daughter in the car. Her blood alcohol level was reported as higher than 0.25 percent.

Florida law presumes impairment at 0.08.

After pleading guilty to driving under the influence and child neglect, she was sentenced to 18 months of probation and ordered to attend parenting classes and multiple-offender DUI school, records state. Adjudication of guilt was withheld.

Then, in 2005, two other cases were brought, one charging her with domestic battery and the other involving a charge of child abuse. Both of those cases were dropped by the Pinellas State Attorney's Office.

Chief Assistant State Attorney Bruce Bartlett said he didn't know why the charges were dropped, but said the reason probably was either because DCF had stepped in or because it involved an issue of a parent disciplining a child.

According to court records, the domestic battery charge involved an allegation she was hitting her then 7-year-old daughter. When the girl attempted to stop her mother, Broadhead slapped her across the face and continued hitting her, the complaint states.

The child abuse complaint states that Broadhead was intoxicated and "began beating her child repeatedly with her hands." When Broadhead's live-in boyfriend tried to stop her, he was also battered, the complaint states.

The child told authorities that her "mother repeatedly hits her, and as a result, [she] is in fear of continued living conditions."

Broadhead declined to speak today with reporters.

She suffered serious burns and smoke inhalation after the fire Tuesday night at her home at 1580 Huntington Lane. She remains hospitalized in Tampa General Hospital, where her condition was upgraded overnight to fair. Today is Broadhead's 48th birthday.

Authorities said her daughter and Ault poured gas on the mother's bed and floor and then lighted it. They said the couple then drove off in the mother's car.

Police are unsure what caused the incident. The mother and daughter had argued the night before over whether the girl had stolen cigarettes from her mother.

Her daughter's 15-year-old boyfriend, accused of conspiring in the plot to kill Broadhead, was ordered this morning to remain with juvenile authorities.

Bartlett said it was too early to know whether the two would be charged as adults. He said it would be highly unusual to charge an 11-year-old as an adult. "We're very conservative about charging children under the age of 14" as adults, he added. "I don't think we ever have charged someone that age as an adult."

Charging a 15-year-old as an adult is something else, Bartlett said. That would not be unusual, particularly when the teen has had prior involvement with the juvenile justice system.

Bartlett said the decision about charging the teens would probably be made in about two weeks at the conclusion of an investigation.

Pinellas-Pasco County Circuit Judge Irene Sullivan ordered that Jack Ault continue to be held after an advisory first appearance in juvenile court.

Ault and girlfriend Samantha Broadhead, 11, were charged Tuesday with attempted homicide and arson resulting in injury.

Samantha Broadhead is undergoing psychiatric assessment under the state's Baker Act and didn't make an initial appearance.

A spokeswoman for the state Department of Children and Families said the agency has an "extensive family history" of cases involving the girl and Ault, but no open cases.

Post by Nama Wed Dec 30, 2009 5:10 pm

The mother of a 15-year-old boy charged with attempted murder in an arson that injured the mother of his 11-year-old girlfriend says he didn't do it.

Shannon Mastrangelo said there was no way her son, Jack Ault, was capable of committing the crimes he's been charged with: arson, grand theft auto and attempted murder. Police say he assisted his girlfriend in setting fire to the girl's house as her mother slept.

"My son lies, I catch him. I catch him in a lot of lies," Mastrangelo said. "I know when he's lying. He tells a lie, he can't remember what he said five minutes later."

The house fire at 1580 Huntington Lane, police say, was started by gasoline poured around the bed of the girl's mother, Nancy Broadhead.

Broadhead, who suffered burns and smoke inhalation, was released Wednesday afternoon from Tampa General Hospital. She declined to comment when reached by phone. Her daughter is not being named because of her age.

Mastrangelo received a call from Clearwater police at 5 a.m. Tuesday.

"Your son is going to be questioned," the detective said.

Mastrangelo thought it may have been about a family dog that she reported stolen two weeks earlier. It wasn't. She asked what was going on.

"Arson," the detective said.

Mastrangelo's response: "No way."

When she arrived at the Clearwater police station, a detective escorted her to the interrogation room.

Jack, 15, was sitting in his shorts and a shirt. His clothes had been taken as evidence.

"His lips were blue, his teeth were chattering, he was freezing to death," Matrangelo said of her son's condition in the room. He had been held since 2 a.m. in handcuffs, when he was arrested at a friend's house — exactly where Jack told his mother he would be.

"What's this about a fire, about (the girl)?" Mastrangelo asked her son.

"All I know is (she) wanting to kill her mom and they pick me up," Jack said.

She went up to her son and kissed him.

"I love you," she said. "Don't say another word."

She was afraid the police would be listening, hoping Jack would say something to her he didn't tell them.

Jack, who is being held at the Pinellas County Juvenile Assessment Center, attended an advisory hearing Wednesday morning.

Pinellas-Pasco courts spokesman Ron Stuart said he could not speak specifically about Jack Ault's case, but said: "Generally, they're advised of the charges against them and they determine if there's a need for an indigent declaration, which would make available to them a public defender."

During the hearing, Mastrangelo watched her son. Watched what was going on in disbelief.

"He had this blank stare, like he didn't know what was going on. He kept mouthing to me, 'I didn't do it. I didn't do it,'" she said. "He swears up and down it was (the girl)."

I agree with you, artgal. Yes, what she did was wrong but really, she was sick of the lifestyle. Was it right to set her mother on fire? Of course not.

And also, the mother allows an 11 year old to be in a relationship? Much less, with a boy that is 4 years older? And they are engaged? Give me a break.

I pray that this girl gets the help she needs. As far as the "boyfriend", I think he is more at fault. He knew what he was doing. Even his own father says he lies.

The girl's boyfriend is also no stranger to law enforcement. Apparently his first arrest came with he was eight years old -- for battery. Then he was arrested twice in one week, on two counts of domestic battery and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to the St. Petersburg Times

As the gasoline-addled flames tore through Nancy Broadhead's home early Tuesday, she collapsed in the front yard, soot-blackened and burned.

Neighbors said they heard her screaming, shouting into the cold night a mother's darkest fear.

"My baby! Where's my baby! Where's my baby!" she called. Broadhead thought her 11-year-old daughter was inside, that she had stumbled out of the burning house without her.

But, police say, it was the child and her boyfriend who had wanted the house to burn — mother and all.

On Tuesday, Clearwater police arrested the girl and her boyfriend, Jack Ault, on charges of attempted murder and arson. Police said the two doused the mother's bed with gasoline, then set it ablaze as she slept.

"The 11-year-old girl and her 15-year-old boyfriend plotted to basically set the mom on fire and leave her to die," said Clearwater police spokeswoman Beth Watts.

On the day before Broadhead's 48th birthday, she had survived an attempt to burn her alive, her home was gutted, and her daughter institutionalized.

The motive, police say, was "teenage angst."

"It escalated yesterday when (the mom) confronted the daughter about stealing some of her cigarettes," Watts said.

Neighborhood friends say there may have been more to it.

"She said she was going to get married," said Kevin Otto, 16, who overheard her say so during a football game a week ago.

The St. Petersburg Times is not identifying the girl because of her age.

A MySpace page attributed to a 15-year-old Jack Ault of Clearwater includes a posting dated 2 a.m. on Monday, about 24 hours before the fire. He said he and his girlfriend "are back to together.'' And he lists his mood: "in Love."

When rescuers arrived at 1580 Huntington Lane about 1:15 a.m., they found the single-family home in flames. But Broadhead had escaped after she awoke when a smoke alarm went off.

She was taken to Morton Plant Hospital and later transferred to the Tampa General Hospital burn unit for serious burns and smoke inhalation.

Tuesday afternoon, her condition was upgraded to fair. She declined to speak with reporters.

Police said the home was extensively damaged. Broadhead, who neighbors say worked as a waitress, also has two sons, who were not home at the time of the fire, Watts said.

At some point Tuesday, the daughter returned home and agreed to go to police headquarters for questioning, Watts said.

At that point, "The whole plot started to unravel," she said.

The girl was detained under the state's Baker Act for psychiatric assessment after making statements that made detectives believe she may try to harm herself, Watts said.

Broadhead's neighbors painted a picture of a family in disarray: a mother who was losing control and a daughter testing her boundaries.

"She didn't get along with her mom at all," said Janice Otto, who lives down the street. "It seemed like her mom didn't have a lot of control over her."

Kevin, Janice's son, said the daughter would talk about stealing things from Walgreens. Recently, he said, the girl's mom caught her smoking cigarettes with two older boys and that caused a big fight between them.

But the troubled relationship is also revealed in Nancy Broadhead's arrest record.

She was pulled over the night of July 4, 2002, according to Clearwater police records, accused of driving drunk with her then 4-year-old daughter in the car. She was arrested on charges of child neglect and DUI

Broadhead was sentenced to probation, but violated the terms in March 2003 when she tested positive for marijuana, according to court records.

Then on March 21, 2005, Clearwater police accused Broadhead of drunkenly pummeling her daughter, then 7, with her fists. Charges were dropped, and her attorney at the time said it was a "false accusation."

The girl told police that her mother "repeatedly hits her," and that she was in fear of her.

• • •

Mike Jackson, whose back yard abuts Broadhead's, said his son Mikey, 10, used to play with the girl until this year when she started attending middle school. Jackson, 33, has lived in the neighborhood eight years.

She "is a nice girl, just in need of guidance," he said. "She joined the middle school crowd and slid away from us."

She started hanging out with older boys. Ault was one of them.

His first arrest came when he was 8, for battery. More followed. Between October and November, he was arrested twice within one week, including two counts of domestic battery and one of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

On Tuesday, Ault was taken into custody at a friend's house. He was also charged with grand theft for stealing Broadhead's car. The Ford Focus, which police say the children fled in after the fire, was found abandoned at a church less than 2 miles away.

Police say they would take Ault to the Pinellas County Juvenile Assessment Center.

Ault's mother, Shannon Mastrangelo, answered her front door with tears streaming down her face, a cell phone to her ear.

"My son was just arrested," she said. "I don't have time for anything."

• • •

Families of both of the accused have extensive case records with the Florida Department of Children and Families, said spokeswoman Erin Gillespie.

Case workers have responded to calls at least once every year since 1998 for the Broadheads and since 2000 for Ault's family. The details of those cases are not public unless granted by a court.

There are no open DCF cases with either family, Gillespie said.

• • •

Watts declined to discuss whether the children admitted the crime to police.

"Keep in mind we're still working it," Watts said Tuesday afternoon. "We're still in the process of doing interviews."

Pinellas-Pasco Chief Assistant State Attorney Bruce Bartlett said it was too early to know if his office would charge the accused as juveniles or adults.

Prosecutors will study the case after the investigation is concluded, he said, but added, "it doesn't sound like the type of crime you'd expect kids to be committing."

One of the key issues to consider will be "how extensive the injuries are of this lady."

Bartlett said that as a long-time prosecutor, he sometimes tells himself: "I thought I had seen everything. Just when you think you have, here comes along something like this."

On HLN right now, the Ault boy has been arrested 7 times since 2003.

This case is really something else. I cannot believe Janie Weintraub is saying the mother will have a say so if they prosecute her daughter. She won't. The State will and does.

Its a cycle, the abused and neglected become the abusers and neglectors again and again. Alcohol and drugs, single parents who have multiple men or women coming in and out of these children's lives, receipes for disaster. Yes she was waiting for the 15 year old to get out so she could make room for 6 other children not her own and we know how they will all turn out. They all cry afterwards. This boy and this girl had really no one but each other in a way. They projected the love that they so desperately needed from caring parents onto each other. I dont know what to say anymore. These stories of neglect play out every day. How to solve them? No one really knows.

It seems to me that many of these kids are tossed aside because their mother's or father's are so busy looking for some bimbo or a stud to have sex with.......there doesn't seem to be anything more important to the parents than finding another sex partner. Bunch of needy, self centered SOBs.

The call from police at 5 a.m. Tuesday was the kind that would shake any mother.

The detective's voice made Shannon Mastrangelo numb.

Your son is going to be questioned, she recalled the detective saying. She asked why.

"Arson," the detective said.

Her son, Jack Ault, was arrested early Tuesday and charged with attempted murder, arson and grand theft auto.

Police said they suspect him of helping his 11-year-old girlfriend set fire to her mother's bed as she slept, and then taking her car.

When Mastrangelo arrived at the Clearwater police station, a detective escorted her to the interrogation room.

Jack, 15, was sitting in his shorts and a shirt. His clothes had been taken as evidence. The house fire at 1580 Huntington Lane earlier that morning, police say, was started by gasoline poured around and on the bed of Nancy Broadhead, the girl's mother.

Broadhead suffered burns and smoke inhalation, but was released from Tampa General Hospital on Wednesday afternoon. She declined to speak with reporters.

Her daughter is not being named because of her age. (Why do they keep saying that. We know her name.)

Mastrangelo's son had been in handcuffs since 2 a.m., when he was arrested at a friend's house — where he had told her he would be spending the night.

"What's this about a fire, about (the girl)?" Mastrangelo asked.

"All I know is (she's) wanting to kill her mom and they pick me up," he said.

Mastrangelo said there was no way her son could be capable of committing the crimes.

"My son lies, I catch him. I catch him in a lot of lies. I know when he's lying. He tells a lie, he can't remember what he said five minutes later," Mastrangelo said.

Jack, who is being held at the Pinellas County Juvenile Assessment Center, attended a hearing Wednesday morning where he was advised of the charges.

During the hearing, Mastrangelo watched what was going on in disbelief.

"He had this blank stare, like he didn't know what was going on. He kept mouthing to me, 'I didn't do it. I didn't do it,' " she said. "He swears up and down it was (the girl)."

• • •

Neighbors knew Nancy Broadhead's voice from its near-nightly appearance in the neighborhood streets. She called out her daughter's name most nights as it was getting dark, beckoning her to come inside for dinner.

But the voice that day didn't come until after 1 a.m., when Nancy was slumped and soot-blackened in front of her burning home. She was screaming that her daughter may be inside. But, police say, her daughter and the girl's boyfriend were the ones responsible for the fire.

Beth Watts, a Clearwater police spokeswoman, said Tuesday the motivation may have been an argument between the girl and her mother over cigarettes.

"It's something that had been going on for a period of time. There had been tension between the mother and the child, which culminated with the argument over the cigarettes."

The argument, neighbors say, was one of many Nancy had with her daughter in recent months. Lately, some fights also centered on the social-networking site MySpace.com.

On her page, the 11-year-old girl refers to herself as Mz. Juicey and includes profanity.

Applications on her page range from quiz results that list her as a "naughty girl" to a game with a green-and-black digital dog she created, named "Bad Gurl."

She makes numerous references to drug use, including a series of pictures in which she says she is "high." In all the photos, she is pouting or scowling.

Neighbor Suzie Jackson said the girl wasn't always that way, that she began to change from the little girl who used to play with her 10-year-old son, Mikey.

"You would see her walking down the street with her cell phone and little shorts on. (She) just changed. I don't know if Nancy could control it," Jackson said.

September was the last time Jackson spoke at length with Nancy Broadhead, who was going through financial trouble. On Dec. 22, the first foreclosure notice was sent to her home.

"She wanted us to go to Peace River to go on a fossil dig. She loved the beach. She loved the water," Jackson said. "I know Nancy loved her daughter. No matter what Nancy's problems are, she had a strong family."

Court records paint a more complex picture.

In 2005, Broadhead was arrested for child abuse and domestic battery against her daughter, according to information released Wednesday by the Pinellas-Pasco state attorney.

Broadhead and her daughter, then 7, got into an argument, authorities said, because the mother wanted her daughter to go to bed, but the daughter refused.

The mother was intoxicated, authorities said, and began beating her daughter with an open hand.

The state dropped the case for several reasons: lack of witnesses, the girl's disciplinary history and lack of credibility, and the mother's cooperation with the state Department of Children and Families.

A DCF report said the girl "tends to parrot what others say and lie."

•••

It took a DNA test to prove for sure who the girl's dad was. She was born in 1998. The final determination didn't come until June 2001. A man named William J. Forsman was her father.

Forsman was imprisoned from August 2005 to September 2006 in Georgia. He went back to prison in February 2008 until Dec. 5, convicted of criminal interference of government property and obstruction of a law enforcement officer, Georgia records show. He could not be located Wednesday.

The girl's mother had troubles of her own.

Nancy Broadhead had trouble with alcohol that cost her unsupervised visitation with a son in 1993. A court ordered that another person had to be present when she visited the son, and she was barred from having any alcohol within three hours of a visit.

• • •

After eight years of calls to her house, mostly domestic disputes between her daughter, son and ex-husband, Mastrangelo said the police were tired of hearing about her family.

She didn't trust them.

The day before her son was arrested, Mastrangelo overheard him on the phone with his girlfriend. They had been together for two months. She thought the girl, who she never met, was the same age as her son.

"No, you can't do that, you won't do that, don't do that," she recalled her son saying.

"What are you talking about?" his mom asked him.

"Nothing, Mom," he said. "(My girlfriend) and her mom are fighting again."

Mastrangelo recalled the conversation after her son's arrest. She stood next to him in the cold interrogation room Wednesday.

She went up to her son and kissed him. "I love you," she said. "Don't say another word."

Samantha Broadhead gets no jail time or criminal record after trying to kill her mom by setting her bed afire /Jack Ault sentenced to nine months to two and a half years in a juvenile facility/ Samantha's mother denied visit with Samantha Empty Burned mother, family are well-known to authorities

Post by Nama Thu Dec 31, 2009 11:25 am

Even before an 11-year-old girl was accused of setting her house afire in a plot to burn her mother, the household was far from harmonious, according to court documents.

Nancy Broadhead, the girl's mother, struggled with addictions to alcohol and painkillers. She was accused of beating her daughter, Samantha, and neglecting her sons, Brent and Zachary.

As the children grew up, Broadhead was entangled in multiple custody battles and accused boyfriends of beating her.
Police cars pulling up to Broadhead's home was a familiar sight, residents of her Clearwater neighborhood said.

When Samantha was younger, the girl would visit Lynn Ehrenzeller's house down the street to play with her sons. Samantha often showed up dirty and always hungry, Ehrenzeller said.

"She had a rough childhood," Ehrenzeller said.

The details of Broadhead's household came to light Wednesday, a day after Samantha and her 15-year-old boyfriend, Jack Ault, were arrested and charged with attempted murder and arson resulting in injury.

Authorities said the pair poured gas on the mother's bed and floor and ignited it while she slept. The couple then drove off in the mother's car, police said.

Police are unsure what caused the incident. The mother and daughter had argued the night before over whether the girl had stolen cigarettes from her mother.

Broadhead suffered serious burns and smoke inhalation after the fire that damaged her home at 1580 Huntington Lane. The house is in foreclosure and Broadhead owes the bank $216,768.97, court records show.

Broadhead was released from Tampa General Hospital on Wednesday night. She declined to speak to reporters.

A judge ordered Ault to remain in custody at the Juvenile Detention Center after an advisory first appearance in court on Wednesday morning.

Samantha Broadhead is undergoing psychiatric assessment under the state's Baker Act and didn't make an initial court appearance.

"I feel bad for her, not her mom," Ehrenzeller said. "She could have paid more attention to her daughter."

Court records with all 3 children

Court records show Broadhead, who turned 48 on Wednesday, has three children with three different fathers. Broadhead and her oldest son, Brent, now 24, lived for a time with Broadhead's mother, Barbara.

Barbara Broadhead asked her daughter to leave because she wanted to go out all the time, documents show.

"Her lifestyle and mine are two worlds apart," Barbara Broadhead said.

Barbara Broadhead said she was also worried about her daughter driving with Brent after she had been drinking. Court records state that Nancy Broadhead took Brent to a Ku Klux Klan rally in Arcadia in 1989 when she was dating a Klan officer. She denied being a member of the KKK in court records.

In 1995, Nancy Broadhead filed a paternity suit against John F. Busby, the father of her second son, Zachary, who was then 2 years old.

During a custody battle, Busby told authorities Broadhead was constantly drunk and let their son wander through her neighborhood unattended. A guardian ad litem said Busby had drug problems in the past but overcame his addictions while Broadhead had a drinking problem.

The guardian ad litem, who called Zachary a bright, polite child, recommended that Busby get custody and Broadhead receive counseling. In September 1996, a judge upheld that recommendation and added Broadhead should not be left alone with the child, court documents state.

Broadhead has also been accused in the past of abusing or neglecting Samantha.

She was charged in July 2002 with driving under the influence of alcohol with her then 4-year-old daughter in the car. Her blood-alcohol level was reported as higher than 0.25 percent.

Chief Assistant State Attorney Bruce Bartlett said he didn't know why the charges were dropped, but said the reason probably was either because the state Department of Children & Families had stepped in or because it involved an issue of a parent disciplining a child.

According to court records, the domestic battery charge involved an allegation she was hitting her then 7-year-old daughter. When the girl attempted to stop her mother, Broadhead slapped her across the face and continued hitting her, the complaint states.

The child abuse complaint states that Broadhead was intoxicated and "began beating her child repeatedly with her hands." When Broadhead's live-in boyfriend tried to stop her, he was also struck, the complaint states.

The child told authorities that her "mother repeatedly hits her, and as a result, she is in fear of continued living conditions."

Families' DCF history 'extensive'

DCF officials are reviewing the cases of the Broadhead and Ault families.

"The history of the families is extensive," DCF spokeswoman Erin Gillespie said. "We are looking at several dozen cases between the two families."

Gillespie said there are "some very serious confidentiality issues" including HIPPA laws and mental health concerns that have to be considered.

Bartlett said it was too early to know whether the two would be charged as adults. He said it would be highly unusual to charge an 11-year-old as an adult.

"We're very conservative about charging children under the age of 14" as adults, he said. "I don't think we ever have charged someone that age as an adult."

Charging a 15-year-old as an adult is something else, Bartlett said. That would not be unusual, particularly when the teen has had prior involvement with the juvenile justice system.

Police said Ault was arrested seven times since 2003. Ault recently wrote on his MySpace page that "me and Samantha are back together." He describes his mood as "in love."

Samantha's mood on MySpace described her as "mad" and she wrote that she needed to chill out. In her profile, she wrote that she smokes but doesn't drink and listed her occupation as "high." The girl wrote she didn't need to meet anybody on the social-networking site "cuz I gotta man."

Nancy Broadhead’s 11 year old daughter, Samantha Broadhead, remains in a psychiatric hospital, while her 15 year old boyfriend, Jack Ault stood before a judge today and was ordered to stay in juvenile detention. Now, Jack Ault’s mother is telling the media that her son is innocent and though he is a pathological liar, she knows when he is lying and telling the truth, he did not attempt to kill Nancy Broadhead, she says.

Police say he did.

Not only do they say he participated, but that he stole Nancy Broadhead’s vehicle and drove off with Samantha in tow, fleeing the scene. Had he not stolen the vehicle, it might be simpler to prove that he wasn’t involved.

Samantha Broadhead gets no jail time or criminal record after trying to kill her mom by setting her bed afire /Jack Ault sentenced to nine months to two and a half years in a juvenile facility/ Samantha's mother denied visit with Samantha Empty Will 11 year old Samantha Broadhead face adult charges for setting mom on fire?

Post by Nama Thu Dec 31, 2009 12:35 pm

Will 11 year old Samantha Broadhead face adult charges for setting mom on fire?

In a televised interview, Florida prosecutor Stacey Honowitz was asked if 11 year old Samantha Broadhead could face adult charges for setting her mother on fire. Samantha and her 15 year old boyfriend, Jack Ault, are facing charges of attempted homicide and arson resulting in injury. Jack faces an additional charge of grand theft for stealing Samantha’s mother’s vehicle.

Stacey Honowitz answered, “There`s absolutely no reason why, just because of her age, we would…they might hold her back. The fact that this was a serious plot to murder her mother. The sophistication of getting the gasoline, pouring it in the mother`s bedroom, waiting for the mother to die certainly borderlines on having her charged as an adult, and they will seriously consider it.”

Child abuse, neglect, and violence weren’t a stranger in either child’s home. Authorities said that Jack Ault has been arrested 7 times since 2003 with five of those arrests occurring in 2009. Both children’s families have extensive histories with the Department of Children & Families; however none of those cases were open at the time Nancy Broadhead was set on fire. DCF confirmed that they had been to the Broadhead residence on numerous visits for ‘domestic disturbances,’ and Nancy Broadhead, the victim, had plead guilty to child neglect without great harm in 2002.

Chief Assistant State Attorney Bruce Bartlett spoke about the possibility of Samantha Broadhead and Jack Ault being charged as adults. He said that it is ‘highly unusual’ to charge anyone under the age of 14 as an adult.
“We're very conservative about charging children under the age of 14 as adults. I don't think we ever have charged someone that age as an adult."
Jack Ault is 15 and has a history in the juvenile justice system; it would not be unusual for someone in his situation to be tried as an adult.

The decision to charge the two as adults will be made in approximately two weeks or after authorities finish their investigation.

I think these children come from another world completely removed from most of us. Ive know children when I grew up that had alchoholic parents, but everyone in the neighborhood knew it and kind of looked out for them. We had one woman who used to lock her small children out of the house all day. Now this was in the 1950s no such thing as calling an "agency". My mother and all the women in the neighborhood looked after those kids - fed them lunch and also befriended the mother who was quite young and helped her too.
Society has changed so much - it has become much more degraded and baser in many way. Coarser, mannerless if you understand what I mean. Just with our language alone, the standards are just gone. You can hear cursing on regular TV now its no longer taboo.
Has this made us a better or worse society? I think its made it worse - they used to teach deportment and manners in school, now they cuss out the teachers .
If you tell their parents they cuss you out too! It takes
avillage? Baloney - no one can tell anyones kids anything
they are left on their own and no one wants to get involved. What a world. Whatever agencies were involved failed both these children in my estimation
and they should not be tried as adults -but their parents should also be charged - with the neglect and indifference
of the children they brought into this world.

Samantha Broadhead gets no jail time or criminal record after trying to kill her mom by setting her bed afire /Jack Ault sentenced to nine months to two and a half years in a juvenile facility/ Samantha's mother denied visit with Samantha Empty Court records obtained Wednesday revealed Nancy Broadhead had a troubled pas

Post by Nama Thu Dec 31, 2009 4:41 pm

Court records obtained Wednesday revealed Nancy Broadhead had a troubled past that included charges of child abuse and neglect. She also is described in documents as an alcoholic who sometimes became violent. She has refused to talk to reporters.

The police reports made public have all names other than officers' removed, along with other details, including the ages and genders of people involved. They also have the address involved removed, although they were released in response to a request for reports involving the Broadhead house at 1580 Huntington Lane.

According to the reports:

* Police were called Feb. 28 because of a missing child who was age 13 or older. The complainant told officers that the teen did not come home and would violate probation. The teen didn't want to come home because the juvenile didn't like living there and wanted to live with his or her father. The complainant notified police on March 9 that the juvenile had returned home. The probation officer had been contacted and the Department of Juvenile Justice was involved.

* Police responded July 5 to a call about a juvenile who had violated probation by leaving the residence without permission. The suspect was under a court-imposed curfew as a condition of probation. The reason for the probation was not given.

When police responded, the complainant reported that a juvenile was "acting irrational and punching the walls inside their home." The juvenile had a court appearance scheduled for the next day and was believed to have possessed alcohol when leaving the home. Police notified the state attorney's office of the probation violation.

*A week later, police responded to a call regarding possible child abuse and marijuana possession. The weapons involved were listed as "hands/fists/feet."

The caller told a police dispatcher that someone was punching holes in the walls. "We were familiar with this family from a previous case," the officer reported. "I had completed two juvenile arrest affidavits." Someone "had previously fled from police on foot. I anticipated this again" and brought a K-9 officer and another officer to the scene.

When police arrived, they saw three juveniles in a bedroom. After police knocked and announced their presence, the juveniles ran into the backyard. Two of the suspects were caught; the third got away, but was captured.

Police later went to the home and saw three holes in a wall, estimated to be the size of a fist. On a table below the damaged wall, police spotted "a small amount of loose marijuana in plain view."

The officer later contacted the Florida Child Abuse Hotline and told an operator that someone had given someone marijuana. A case file was opened.

One individual was initially charged with child abuse, possession of marijuana and resisting arrest without violence.

Two of the juveniles were taken to their parents' homes and given trespass warnings. The juvenile who got away was charged with resisting arrest without violence.

The State Attorney's Office later decided not to pursue charges. In the child abuse case, the prosecutor concluded a successful prosecution was unlikely because someone who appeared at the office and testified under oath "failed to substantiate the elements of child abuse."

The marijuana possession charge was dropped because "there were at least two other juveniles in the defendant's room at the time right before the marijuana was discovered."

The state didn't pursue the resisting arrest without violence charge against that person because the person had been committed to the Department of Juvenile Justice and was receiving treatment for some kind of addictions.

This "couple" were probably getting high on their parents pot, getting drunk on their booze, and having sex in their ignorant parents' homes.
