They were found at a Safeway Store North of Golden Gate Park. Someone recognized them from news reports and called LE.
Four detectives are on their way to CA from VA. Two will speak to Jeff Easley, two will speak to Brittany.
Brittany is currently in custody of Child Protective Services. She does know that her mother is dead.

Brittany's great aunt was upset that Jeff was stroking Brittany's hair and rubbing her hand, etc on Thanksgiving. She called Brittany's mother and Tina said she talked to Brittany and that nothing inappropriate happened and that Jeff would be leaving soon. The great aunt called two different services to report the behavior. When they finally called her back she told them it was too late.....Brittany was gone.

The tent was close to the retail store where they were found.

Brittany Mae Smith Found Safe in San Francisco

ROANOKE, Va. (CBS/WDBJ/AP) A Roanoke, Virginia County official says a 12-year-old girl missing for one week has been found unharmed Friday after she and the man accused in her abduction were recognized in a store in San Francisco.

Teresa Hamilton Hall said 32-year-old Jeffrey Scott Easley is in custody. He had been the boyfriend of Brittany's mother, who was found dead on Monday. Police have not released the cause of Tina Smith's death, but have ruled it a homicide.

Brittany Mae Smith has since been in touch with her family in Virginia, while Jeffrey Scott Easley, 32, was in police custody in San Francisco, Roanoke County Police Chief Ray Lavinder said at a news conference.

Authorities have searched extensively for the blue 13-by-10 foot tent that Jeffrey Scott Easley purchased at a Salem Walmart on Friday. Surveillance video shows Easley shopping at the store with Brittany, whose 41-year-old mother Tina Smith was found dead in her home Monday.

An arrest warrant for Easley, 32, has been issued for abduction. Warrants previously were issued for credit card fraud and larceny after Easley used Tina Smith's card at Walmart, police have said.

Lavinder said Brittany and Easley were in a retail store around 3 p.m. in San Francisco when someone in the store recognized the pair from reports on their disappearance and called police. Easley did not resist arrest.

Lavinder said there has been no activity on Tina Smith's credit card since that shopping trip as Easley and Brittany seemed to "just drop off the face of the earth" with little money.

Asked if Easley forced Brittany on the cross-country trip, Lavinder said he didn't know.

"We're just getting bits and pieces of the facts right now," he said.

The girl was aware that her mother had been found dead. She had no signs of physical injury.

Lavinder did not know if Easley had any connections to the San Francisco area or how the pair traveled the 2,320 miles to get there. Roanoke authorities planned to travel to California as soon as possible.

After learning that her granddaughter was safe, Liz Dyer told The Roanoke Times: "We're so glad. We're bouncing off the walls.'"

Brittany Mae Smith, Missing Virginia Girl, Found Safe in California

Jeffrey Easley, Alleged Kidnapper, in Custody; Suspected in Mother's Death

By MICHAEL S. JAMES, NED POTTER and JESSICA HOPPER
Dec. 10, 2010

Brittany Mae Smith, the 12-year-old girl from Salem, Va., who went missing for a week, has been found safe in San Francisco.

"She is well and she is in good hands at this time," Roanoke County, Va., Police Chief Ray Lavinder told reporters hours after Brittany was found. "She's been in touch with her family. They're very relieved and I'm assuming maybe a family member will go out there and escort her back."

Police in Roanoke, Va., added that Jeffrey Scott Easley, 32, was in custody in connection with the case. He was a suspect both in Brittany's disappearance and in the death of her mother, Tina Smith.

Lavinder said Brittany and Easley were spotted by a police tipster in an unspecified retail store in San Francisco. Police soon took the pair into custody without resistance.

"They were located somewhere near a tent, which was apparently located somewhere within walking distance of the retail store" where the tipster recognized them from media coverage, Lavinder said.

He added that Brittany was talking to police in San Francisco, and Virginia authorities would seek Easley's extradition back to Virginia.

"Hopefully, he'll waive extradition and be back here with us in Virginia within the week," Lavinder said.

Police issued an Amber Alert for Brittany on Dec. 6 after discovering the body of her 41-year-old mother, Tina Smith.

A coroner ruled the death a homicide. Police said that finding Brittany and Easley was key to the murder investigation.

The search for Brittany and Easley spanned eight states. Digital billboards in several of those states asked citizens to be on the lookout. In addition to Virginia and California, investigators in North Carolina, Florida, Alabama, West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky worked the case. Police said the girl was with Easley when they were found.

The two appeared in a surveillance video released today, taken Dec. 3 at a Salem, Va., Walmart, shortly after the girl first was reported missing.

In the video, Brittany appeared calm. Easley, wearing a white t-shirt, pushed a shopping cart while Brittany walked close to him. Brittany never was seen motioning for help. She helped Easley unload camping equipment while going through the checkout line.

Police said that they received nearly 600 tips in the case.

Thursday, relatives of Smith, a seventh grader, publicly appealed to the man suspected of holding her to let the girl come home safely for Christmas.

"Mr. Easley, I know you don't know me, but, sir, please let Brittany come home for Christmas," said Rhonda, one of Brittany's aunts, at a press conference.

Another aunt said, "Jeff, we hope you'll do the right thing and bring Britt home. We'd like to have her back so we can say goodbye and make final funeral plans for her mom."

The women did not want to reveal their last names.

Page 2 of the article -

Friends Describe Tina Smith as Trusting

As police focused on finding Brittany, friends of the missing girl's family said that Brittany's murdered mother, Tina, was too trusting.

Lisa Ennemoser and Mark Lankford said they had known Tina Smith since childhood.

"She would give you the shirt off her back, she would do anything to make you laugh," Ennemoser told ABC affiliate WSET in Lynchburg, Va.

Now, police are investigating whether Tina Smith's willingness to let Easley live with her and her daughter led to her daughter's disappearance and her own death.

Tina Smith and Easley began an online relationship this summer. Easley moved into the family's home in October. He worked as a landscaper.

Along with questions about the nature of Tina Smith's relationship with the man, investigators are still determining Easley's relationship with Brittany.

The missing seventh grader's Facebook page lists her name as "Brittany Easley" instead of her legal name. Her MySpace page's latest update reads, "Brittany Easleys what they call me."

Amber Alert canceled after girl found safe in San Francisco

ROANOKE, VA (WAFF)- The amber alert for 12-year-old Brittany Smith has been canceled.

Investigators say someone recognized Smith and her alleged abductor Jeff Easley in California and called police.

"It's with a tremendous sense of relief that I say we have located Brittany. She is well and she is in good hands at this time," said Roanoke County Police Chief Jim Lavinder.

Brittany has been missing for more than a week.

The search ended 2500 miles from where it started when the Smith and Easley were spotted in a store in San Francisco.

"They notified the San Francisco Police who responded to the scene and located Mr. Easley and arrested him. And made sure Brittany was safe," said Chief Lavinder.

Police say they found them near a tent within walking distance of the store.

Brittany Smith's family now waits to see her again.

"She's been in touch with her family. They're very excited and I'm assuming maybe a family member will go out there and escort her back," said Chief Lavinder.

S.F. shopper helps capture fugitive, kidnap victim

Jaxon Van Derbeken, Chronicle Staff Writer

Friday, December 10, 2010

Roanoke County, Va., police
Brittany Mae Smith, 12, of Virginia was allegedly kidnapped by Jeffrey Scott Easley. Easley was arrested Friday in San Francisco.

(12-10) 21:01 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- A relieved Virginia police chief extended an emotional thank-you from across the country to a San Francisco woman who spotted a fugitive sought in a slaying and kidnapping as she shopped at a Safeway in the Outer Richmond on Friday afternoon.

"We're so thankful to her - for a person to be that observant, 3,000 miles away, is almost incredible," Roanoke County Police Chief Ray Lavinder said about the unidentified shopper who recognized Jeffrey Scott Easley, 32, from a TV report and called police, leading to his arrest and the recovery of 12-year-old Brittany Mae Smith.

"It's an amazing ending to a story, and we were so concerned about what would be the outcome," said Teresa Hamilton Hall, a Roanoke County police spokeswoman. Four detectives, en route to San Francisco to complete the investigation, will thank the shopper personally, she said.

"We have no idea who it is, but in my eyes, whoever it is, they're a hero," Hall said.

Girl's father tearful

The father of the kidnap victim, who is a police officer in a nearby town, was tearful when he got the news his daughter had been found, Hall said.

"He expressed extreme relief - he was tearful, thanking God and the thanking the officers and especially the woman who called in," she said.

Distinctive tattoos

On Friday, San Francisco police called Virginia police after the shopper spotted the fugitive and the girl at the Safeway at 48th Avenue and Fulton Street. They described distinctive tattoos Easley had on his calves to confirm his identity.

"We're immensely happy," Lavinder said late Friday, thanking both the alert shopper and San Francisco police for capturing the man and recovering the kidnap victim without incident.

The two, who were detained at about 1:30 p.m., had been living in a makeshift encampment near Ocean Beach, police said. The tent Easley had purchased at the Virginia Walmart was found in the encampment nearby, police said.

The child was placed in a shelter, and Easley was being held without bail on kidnapping charges.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Investigators say a 12-year-old Virginia girl who had been missing for one week was found unharmed after someone recognized her in a store in San Francisco and called police.

The person reported seeing Brittany Mae Smith to police after recognizing the girl from the Nancy Grace show.

Police say Smith was found Friday afternoon outside the store by police, who also took into custody the man who had been sought in her abduction.

The man arrested in San Francisco is Jeffrey Scott Easley. He had been the live-in boyfriend of Brittany's mother, Tina Smith. She was found dead on Monday.

Easley did not resist arrest.

Roanoke County police said Brittany knows her mother had been found dead.

it is believed that Easley and Smith's mother met online and he began living with the two in October.

I say Kudo's to the media who got this story out and someone over 2,000 miles away recognized them and called 911. This was a fluke IMO. Because how many times do you hear of a missing person(s) being found alive so far away? The media would not let up on this case and for that I am grateful.

You can bet LE has photo's of the tent untouched by them. And, I feel for Brittany. She has lost her mother, taken on a wild goose chase by the man who PROBABLY killed her mother, she was probably scared out of her mind wondering where they would go next and where they would sleep. She was scared and cold and thinking of her mother. She may look older than 12 but she is still a little girl in a lot of ways. How sad for her.

At least now, she is in a warm bed. I hope the SFPD are being kind to her and allowing her to catch up on her sleep. I am certain she will be questioned for hours and hours. This will not be easy for her, as I have a feeling that she was probably sexually assaulted by him. I pray I am wrong.

I thought for sure they were headed for Florida. Maybe he knew taking Interstate 95 would be too dangerous..so he figured California would be warmer. SF is NOT that warm at all. But it would have been virtually easy to get lost in a city that size.

I never ever got a vibe that she was dead. I don't think his aim was to kill her but take her in like a girlfriend. Disgusting!!!!

Missing Virginia girl found safe in San Francisco
– 1 hr 59 mins ago

ROANOKE, Va. – A 12-year-old girl who had been missing for a week was found unharmed Friday after she and the man accused in her abduction were recognized in a store in San Francisco, police said.

Brittany Mae Smith has since been in touch with her family in Virginia, while Jeffrey Scott Easley, 32, was in police custody in San Francisco, Roanoke County Police Chief Ray Lavinder said at a news conference.

The two hadn't been seen since Dec. 3, when they were captured on store surveillance video at a Walmart in Salem, about five miles from Roanoke.

The girl's mother and Easley's girlfriend, Tina Smith, was found dead on Monday their home in southwestern Virginia. The cause of death has not been released but police consider it a homicide.

Police have refused to say whether they consider Easley a suspect in the mother's death, but they said Friday that the investigation of the slaying would ramp up now that the search for the girl is over.

San Francisco police said a woman spotted them both around 2 p.m. Pacific time in front of a supermarket in the city's Outer Richmond neighborhood.

The woman called 911 after recognizing Easley and Smith from a cable news program about the alleged abduction, said Officer Albie Esparza, a police spokesman.

Easley was arrested without incident. The girl is currently in child protective custody and Easley is in San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of kidnapping.

Esparza said the girl is cooperating with police. Police are still looking into what connection Easley and the girl may have to the San Francisco Bay area.

Brittany's disappearance had generated more than 700 tips to Roanoke County police, who earlier Friday said they were deeply concerned after finding no trace of the girl after days of searching.

Lavinder said he had a "tremendous sense of relief" that Brittany had been found.

After learning that her granddaughter was safe, Liz Dyer told The Roanoke Times: "We're so glad. We're bouncing off the walls."

In my previous post, I was praising God & LE for finding Brittany alive & well. Well, I now realize that I should also praise the efforts of the media (esp. the Nancy Grace show) and the woman who actually recognized them & reported them to LE! Bravo

Wrap, I do remember you saying that you had a feeling Brittany would be found alive... and you were right! you rock

Jeanne, thanks for posting those pictures of Tina's home. It does look like she was a good homemaker, but it's sad that her lack of judgement (in getting involved with Jeff Easley & letting him live with them) led to her death & her daughter's abduction!

I have a feeling that Easley didn't realize how widespread the media would be! In other words, he felt quite "safe" in California... not realizing that their pictures were being show on TV all over the USA (and even into Canada)!!

There will be court hearings in San Francisco for Jeffrey Easley. Four detectives from Roanoke County will be heading to the west coast immediately. Chief Lavinder says he hopes Easley will waive extradition. If he does not, the chief says it could be thirty days before he returns to Virginia.

Police are still searching for Tina Smith's car. They believe that Easley took the car, a 2005 Dodge Neon, and was using it for transportation this past week.

About two hours after Brittany Smith was found, three officers along with a case investigator arrived at the home where Tina Smith's body was found. They focused on the backyard, taking multiple pictures. So far, no one has been charged with her murder.

The investigators would not say why they are searching the house, and police won't say how Tina Smith died.

As for who will have custody of Brittany when she gets home, "I don't think we have made any plans, and of course alot of those decisions will be left up to social services, and I would say Brittany would have some voice in that," said Lavinder.

They don't know if Easley killed Tina? I guess they are waiting until they have positive proof. Surely Brittany is not the one that killed her!

No the signature came from those funny Facebook quotes. Status Shuffle. I thought if pretty funny too.

I am thinking their house was in a subdivision. So I wonder if anybody in the neighborhood saw anything. Hard to say. You could lay in my back yard all Winter and not be discovered til Spring. Sarcasm

I have been thinking of this statement by Brittanys aunt. Was dad suprised she was alive or did she sound so different to him? Another mystery.

“He couldn't even believe it was her at first. he wanted to know for sure it was her,” said Louis Choquette, the girl’s great aunt. “He asked her for the name of his dog and the name of her dog to make sure it was her.”

They focused on the backyard, taking multiple pictures. So far, no one has been charged with her murder.

Lisette there was a time when I believed children incapable of such terrible crimes. Anymore I am not so sure. Kids are forced to grow up fast. They have a lot on their plates at such young ages.

Right now, as they say, the jury is still out on this one.

No family of Brittany Smith joined four investiagtors to California; interrogations of Easley will begin tonight, as well as initial conversations with the 12-year-old. There still is no word on the nature of her relationship with Easley.

There will be no new information concerning Tina Smith's cause and manner of death.

I think there are going to be some surprises when it all comes out.

Normal 12-12 Press Conference: Brittany Smith Disappearance

Post by Nama on Mon Dec 13, 2010 12:10 am

A press conference wraps up in San Francisco shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, about the disappearance of 12-year-old Brittany Smith.

Roanoke County Detective John McPhail says the focus of the case has shifted to the murder investigation of Brittany's mother, 41-year old Tina Smith.

He says investigators spent Sunday morning talking with Smith and her abductor Jeffrey Easley, but are unable to share anything the pair said, because they don't want to jeopardize the case.

Yesterday, Roanoke County Police Chief Ray Lavinder announced that Easley is now a murder suspect in the death of Brittany's mother.

Normal At the conference Sunday, McPhail would not describe the girl's condition or say whether she had been sexually assaulted.

Post by Nama on Mon Dec 13, 2010 12:31 am

Since arriving in San Francisco Saturday, Roanoke detectives visited the area on the outskirts of ocean beach, where the girl and Easley were staying prior to their discovery.
At the conference Sunday, McPhail would not describe the girl's condition or say whether she had been sexually assaulted.
“We don't want anything to jeopardize the case back in Roanoke and its very important we get justice for Tina Smith's family,” said McPhail.
Easley was being held in the psychiatric unit of the San Francisco County Jail Sunday on warrants for abduction, credit card theft and credit card fraud.
The girl was in protective custody Sunday and she spoke with her father over the phone last night. Police have not yet said when the two will go back to Virginia. An extradition hearing for Easley had not been set as of Sunday.

I just watched the video. Wow I don't know how much time was between the picture of the little girl and then the picture of the eye make up girl but you can see a real change.

For a single mother this was a beautiful home and an inground pool. That guy had to think he hit the jackpot when he moved in there.

Also I noticed the other little girl that was found in CA with her uncle is reunited with her family and her father is her spokesperson.

Something is wrong with Brittanys story or family. Dont' quite know what yet.

Others are speculating why Tina took Brittany out of school on Friday the same day Tina was last seen and the famous video was seen at Walmart.

Mothers usually take their daughters to the dentist or the doctors office.

Also I am wondering why she has not returned to VA. The other young gal, found in SF, has been reunited with her family and is home.

Why aren't they returning Brittany?

I am speculating folks..just speculating.

The police had confirmed that Brittany was aware of her mother's death already, but did not say how she knew.

Lots to speculate about this case, Jeanne.

Normal Mug shot

Post by Nama on Mon Dec 13, 2010 12:47 pm

Roanoke County Police tell us that 12-year-old Brittany Smith will fly back to Roanoke today, with the four investigators who flew to San Francisco. County Police would not say when she would arrive.

Also, Roanoke Co. Police released a new mugshot of Jeffrey Easley late Monday morning. Police tell us it was taken over the weekend by San Francisco Police.

Roanoke County investigators say they do not know when Easley's first court appearance in San Francisco will be, for potential extradition back to Virginia.

Brittany Smith's great-aunt, Lois Choquette, told ABC affiliate KGO that she first met Easley on Thanksgiving and was immediately suspicious about the way Easley interacted with the seventh-grader.

"He was touching her hair and touching her hands and just gazing at her," said Choquette. "It was like he wanted to consume her with his eyes. It was just gross."

Choquette said she called Child Protective Services and a child abuse hotline four times the following day and never heard back. She also called the girl's mother to express concern, KGO reports.

Investigators have not given further details about the nature of Easley's relationship with Brittany. The middle schooler's Facebook page lists her name as Brittany Easley instead of her legal name. Her MySpace page's latest update reads, "Brittany Easleys what they call me."

Authorities won't say why the two went to California, or how they got there. They did say that Brittany was unharmed and is aware that her mom is dead.

Authorities said that even if Brittany left with Easley willingly, she's a child and still considered a victim.

I think LE is leading (slowly) up to telling us that Brittany left VA with Easley willingly. Just my humble opinion and subject to change.

I've been thinking the same thing. Also, at the presser on Friday LE said a member of the family might be accompanying LE to CA but no family members came, that's odd IMO. If that were my g'daughter or anyone really, wild horses couldn't keep me away. BUT, if I had reason to believe that she knew about her Mom's murder and still willingly went with this guy, I'm not so sure I'd want to be present, I think I'd probably let LE handle it.
I think in the coming days/weeks we are going to be learning a lot. JMO of course.
