I thought there was a thread about this, but I couldn't find it.

Two Detroit women who were abducted last month and may have fingered their captors by text-messaging relatives from inside the trunk of a car appear to have wound up dead in a shallow grave, according to authorities.
Police believe two bodies found buried in the woods near Detroit may be those of 18-year-old Abreeya Brown and 22-year-old Ashley Conaway. The woman, who were housemates, were grabbed Feb. 28 from their front porch by two men who traded bullets with Brown's stepfather before getting away, according to relatives. In what may have been a final, frantic act, Conaway texted relatives an hour later, saying they were trapped in the trunk of a car. They were never seen again.
"On the surface, they fit the description of the two missing ladies," Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee told reporters at the scene Sunday. "The families have been notified. We're going to be out here a long time."
Friends, family and police had been searching for the pair until Sunday, when the bodies of two females matching their descriptions were found in the shallow graves along the Rouge River. Police were brought to the area after receiving a tip.
Relatives said the women named their abductors in the text messages, and police have zeroed in on two men who have been named as persons of interest. One, Brian Christopher Lee, 24, was to appear Monday morning before Judge Roberta Archer on attempted murder charges from a Feb. 8 incident in which he allegedly shot and wounded Conaway. Lee, along with Brandon Cain, 26, Conaway's ex-boyfriend and a co-defendant in the Feb. 8 shooting, are persons of interest in the disappearance of the two women.
"We should not lose our daughters to evil and nasty men," Latrina Conaway, mother of Ashley Conaway, told the Detroit News. "Two beautiful young women who never had the opportunity to grow, to have families, to have life. It's just a shame. Everyone should be touched by this traumatic thing.
Family members believe the abductions were carried out to prevent the women from testifying about the earlier shooting. According to reports, Brown and Conaway had been offered $5,000 not to testify against Cain in the earlier incident.
Cain and Lee are in custody but have not been formally accused in the women's disappearance.

I can't imagine the fear and terror that these two beautiful young ladies experienced at the hands of these ghetto trash monsters.
The family is absolutely devastated. Abreeya's mother referred to what she saw at the coroner's office as "that what I saw...that wasn't my daughter." This doesn't even sound like something that happens in America. Seriously it sounds like something we hear from Afghanistan or Iraq. This will only get worse as African Americans continue to embrace a culture of violence. Hip hop so-called culture was the worst thing that ever happened to us. I say it's worse than slavery because at least the slaves knew what was happening to them was wrong. These days we hear lyrics that describe black on black violence and we think it's cute! But the real meaning of those lyrics is 2 best friends being buried in matching coffins.
I keep warning women to stop dating these thugs!! Thugs are very dangerous and they are not sexy. It was not sexy at all when Ashley and Abreeya were forced into that trunk. Get yourself a nerd with a job (like me!) You'll live longer.

Two Hamtramck women whose bodies were found in a shallow grave Sunday in northwest Detroit -- almost a month after they vanished -- were bound, gagged and shot in the head, according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office.

Bodies found in shallow grave confirmed are of two missing women, Abreeya Brown and Ashely Conaway, who texted 911 from car's trunk/ who were found bound & gagged w/ duck tape & shot in the head/Five men arrested & charged w/ 1st degree murder & torture 12310
Abreeya Brown, 18, and Ashley Conaway, 22, each died of a single gunshot wound to the head, Wayne County spokeswoman Brooke Blackwell said. Their fathers positively identified the women Monday.

"Both were gagged and bound with duct tape," she said. "Both were still clothed."

Their deaths have been ruled homicides. The women disappeared Feb. 28, but it's unclear how long their bodies were in the wooded area near the Rouge River. Detroit police, acting on a tip, found the bodies just before 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

The families of Brown and Conaway said the discovery of the bodies, near 6 Mile and Telegraph, is just the start of their quest for justice.

"We should not lose our children, our daughters to such a travesty," Latrina Conaway, Ashley Conaway's sister, said Monday outside 36th District Court. She was accompanied by Lois Brown, Abreeya Brown's mother. "We're just going to stand strong. We're going to walk the judicial system down to the wire. We know justice shall prevail. But for me, this is just the beginning."

The promise came after a hearing for Brian C. Lee, 24, one of the men named as a person of interest in the women's disappearance. The hearing was adjourned until Friday.

Lee and Brandon Cain, 26, are accused of shooting at the women's car as it pulled away Feb. 8. A bullet grazed Conaway's head.

Friends and relatives have said the shooting occurred after Conaway told Cain she was no longer romantically interested in him. The women were kidnapped Feb. 28 after, their families say, they refused to accept money to not testify in the shooting case.

They were last heard from the night of their abduction, when Conaway sent a text message to a cousin saying the two were locked in the trunk of a car.

Investigators continued to comb the area Monday where the women's bodies were found, said Hamtramck Acting Police Chief Max Garbarino.

Police said they plan to seek charges in the case, but did not provide details. "We're certainly working in that direction; that's our ultimate goal," Garbarino said. "We're not there yet. The investigation continues."

The women's families said police told them they found a burned-out car on the city's west side the day after the women disappeared. It had bullet holes where Brown's stepfather told police he shot to try to stop the kidnapping.

"I'm at the point my ungodly suffering is over; now I am in mourning," Lois Brown said Monday. "I'm just glad that I have closure, that I know where the location of my daughter is now: She's in the kingdom of heaven."

Cain and Lee remain jailed and are to have a preliminary exam Friday on charges of assault with intent to murder in the Feb. 8 shooting. Cain also is charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm and felonious assault.

They have not been charged in connection with the women's disappearance.

"It didn't turn out in the way we had hoped it would turn out, but our faith is strong, this family should be strong," Latrina Conaway said. "It's a sad day. A very sad day."http://www.freep.com/article/20120327/NEWS02/203270351

Five Detroit men, including two already on trial, were charged this morning with first-degree murder in the deaths of Ashley Conaway, 22, and Abreeya Brown, 18, of Hamtramck, two friends who were kidnapped at gunpoint in late February and found dead one month later.

The high-profile deaths, linked to witness statements Conaway made to police with regards to a Feb. 8 shooting, sparked a multi-jurisdictional investigation that led to the arrests of Miguel Rodriguez, 24 and cousins Reginald Brown, 24 and Jeremy Brown, 19. Neither of the suspects are related to victim Abreeya Brown.

In addition, prosecutors added murder charges for Brandon Cain, 26, and Brian Lee, 25.

The two men are already bound over for trial in the Wayne County Circuit Court on charges of shooting at the two women about three weeks before they were kidnapped.http://www.freep.com/article/20120407/NEWS02/120407011

About 20 of the suspects' friends and relatives sat on one side of the courtroom Monday and watched via video as three men -- standing side-by-side in orange jail garb -- were arraigned on charges of murdering Ashley Conaway and Abreeya Brown of Hamtramck.

On the other side of the courtroom were family members of the victims, who were best friends for years. The men -- Brandon Cain, 26, Brian Lee, 25, and Miguel Rodriguez, 24 -- each face two counts of first-degree murder, felony murder, torture and unlawful imprisonment.

Conaway, 22, and Brown, 18, were found March 25 in a shallow grave near 6 Mile and Telegraph on Detroit's west side, nearly a month after they were snatched from their home.

Both had been shot in the head and were gagged and bound with duct tape, officials said.

Two cousins -- Reginald Brown, 24, and Jeremy Brown, 19 -- face the same charges in the women's deaths. The men, who are not related to Abreeya Brown, were arraigned Saturday.

None of the families commented after leaving 31st District Court on Monday. Some friends of Rodriguez, who declined to give their names, told the Free Press before the arraignment that he's not capable of the crimes he's accused of committing.

Rodriguez said he planned to hire an attorney, but did not give a name. Attorneys for Lee and Cain maintained their clients' innocence.

"We definitely want justice for those girls," Lee's attorney, Arnold Reed, said.

Reed said his client has been wrongly charged, maintaining that officials are trying to get Lee to give information in the case that he doesn't have.

Wright Blake, Cain's attorney, said his client maintains he is innocent.

Prosecutors said they charged each of the defendants "based upon facts and evidence that can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt in court."

All five men are being held without bond in the Wayne County Jail and have a preliminary examination scheduled April 19 in Hamtramck.

Cain and Lee also face charges in connection with an earlier incident involving Conaway and Abreeya Brown. Lee is accused of shooting at the two women at the request of Cain, whom Conaway once dated.

None of this was the young ladies' fault and I do not blame these victims, but there is one thing I don't understand.
After the first time the thugs shot at the girls, Ashley had to go to the hospital to have bullet fragments removed from the back of her head. They gave statements to the police at that time. Then the police took the two girls to a hotel in another county and told them not to return to the Detroit area until the thugs had been arrested. I don't understand why the girls returned to Detroit before being told it was okay by the cops?
I can't imagine the terror those girls felt. I don't even want to know the details of how they were tortured. MI needs the death penalty.

Judge upholds charges against 5 men accused of killing Hamtramck women
May 25, 2012

A Hamtramck judge decided today to uphold all charges against five men accused of murdering best friends Ashley Conaway and Abreeya Brown.

And despite cheers by the women's family and friends in a conference room after the decision at 31st District Court this afternoon, Conaway's sister said she has empathy for the families of the men charged, too.

“My prayers are with the young men’s mothers; my prayers are with their families,” Ashley’s sister, Latrina Conaway, 44, said outside the courthouse. “And I don’t have any hate for them. I’m just ready to move forward, allow justice to be served, to be demonstrated, so that we can go on.”

Judge Paul Paruk today ordered Brandon Cain, 26; Brian Lee, 25; Miguel Rodriguez, 24; and cousins Reginald Brown, 24, and Jeremy Brown, 19 (no relation to Abreeya Brown), arraigned on the charges in Wayne County Circuit Court in Detroit at 9 a.m. June 1.

Today's hearing took place after Rodriguez, one of the prosecution's star witnesses, was being watched intently after he told his girlfriend on Thursday that he wanted to hurt himself, according to a court official.

Rodriguez's recorded interview with police was played in a preliminary hearing May 4. In the interview, Rodriguez told investigators that he bought shovels and gas at Cain's request on Feb. 28, the night Brown and Conaway disappeared. Rodriguez said that he saw the women shuffling as though they were bound and being led into the woods on Detroit's west side, near where their bodies were found about a month later.

Rodriguez's attorney argued that charges should be dropped against Rodriguez because he didn't know the purpose of the shovels or gas and didn't know the two women were going to be killed.

All five men were charged with first-degree murder and torture in connection with the women's deaths. Today the judge decided to change Lee and Jeremy Brown's charges to aiding and abetting the crimes, which lawyers said carries the same penalty.

"It's just a theory of whose role was what," said attorney Arnold Reed, Cain's lawyer. "It's no lesser charges."

Reed continued to maintain that only circumstantial evidence links Cain to the killings, calling the decision "a travesty of justice."

Conaway's stepfather testified that the two young women were kidnapped in a hail of gunfire outside their Hamtramck home and identified Cain as one of the kidnappers.

The two women were set to testify against Cain and Lee, who were accused of having shot at them Feb. 8, after Conaway broke off a relationship with Cain. Conaway was wounded. Family said the women refused Cain's offer of $5,000 in hush money.

In testimony during the preliminary exam, a phone records expert from the U.S. Marshals Service testified that both the women's cell phones and the Brown cousins' cell phones tracked together along cell phone towers toward Eliza Howell Park the night the two disappeared - including a 911 call Conaway said she was making from the trunk of a car that Cain was driving.

The Brown cousins' attorneys argue in court documents that the cases against their clients should be dismissed because the phone records are not credible. Paruk ruled most of the phone records were admissible, except for some text messages about weapons that did not indicate who was sending them.

The judge also disagreed with the contention by Lee's lawyer that Rodriguez's recorded testimony is not admissible. In court filings, Cain's attorney said the case against his client is built on hearsay and no physical evidence.

One woman, Audrey Glenn, testified she had a sexual relationship with Cain but refused to be his girlfriend because he was dating Conaway. She said he showed up at her house the night Conaway and Brown disappeared with dirt on his socks, telling her "You don't have to worry about her no more." She testified he told her his clothes were muddied because he was with another woman and had to jump out a window when her husband came home, according to court records.

Latrina Conaway said after the hearing that she hopes the case serves as an example to young people to turn away from wrongdoing.

“I hope the death of Ashley and Abreeya will serve as an example to young people not to listen to the lies of the devil, to not listen to lies of men who are corrupt and for the wrong things, and that this can be an example to them to go in a different direction and live different lives,” Conaway said.
