This guy didn't just hack his roommate, he shot him w/ a rifle, shot him with another gun, hacked him with an ax, slashed him with a sword...a real case of over-kill that I SERIOUSLY doubt can be blamed on Mucinex, FGS.

Mucinex plus crack, maybe. LOL.

This world seems to be getting sicker and sicker and NC and Florida are the ringleaders for shocking murders beyond the pale.

When I saw the title of this my first thought was whats in the water in Hickory, But now I know its all in the drugs!

A North Carolina teen has been charged with murder after his roommate was found dead from apparent gunshot and stab wounds early Monday morning.
Michael Anderson, 19, told reporters as he was taken to jail Monday that he loved 36-year-old victim Stephen Starr, "as a friend," reports CBS affiliate WBTV.

Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said Starr was shot several times with a handgun and a shotgun, suffered several stab wounds and had also been struck several times with an axe.

According to investigators, Starr also had a word carved in his side with a knife, and had several more words written on the front of his body, most likely with a ball point pen.

Deputies would not say what the words were.

Authorities were informed of the gruesome killing that occurred in a home just south of the Hickory, N.C. city limits when Anderson reportedly called 911 around 4:45 a.m. Monday.

"He said he had just shot his roommate and took an axe to him," Reid told WBTV.

Neighbors said Starr had lived in the residence for about eight years, but they were not sure how long Anderson was there. Anderson confirmed that he had been living in the home and told WBTV his relationship with Starr was all about friendship.

Anderson is charged with murder and is being held without bond in the Catawba County Detention Facility in Newton, N.C., about 10 miles outside Hickory.

Before the door closed behind him to the jail, Anderson reportedly had a message for Starr's family.

"I'm sorry," he said.

Anderson is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning.

Police are searching for a motive for the slaying.

In one of the grisliest murders the local Catawba County Sheriff’s Department can recall, a teen roommate used the gay panic defense to justify his alleged ax-and-shotgun murder of an older gay man.

Michael Anderson, 19, of nearby King’s Mountain, is accused of murdering 38-year-old Stephen Starr at about 4:45 a.m. on Monday in the Hickory house they shared.

The Hickory Daily Record reports that Anderson, claiming he “turned straight” during alleged sexual advances by Starr, shot him with a shotgun and pistol, carved words into his body and wrote some others with a pen, before lodging an ax in the victim’s stomach.

“He shot his roommate and took an ax to him,” Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid told the Daily Record. “It’s one of the nastiest crime scenes I’ve been to.”

The words carved and written on Starr’s mutilated body were apparently so offensive that officials are not releasing what they were until the trial. Anderson announced the murder on his Facebook page between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m., asking God to forgive him, and claiming that no one would be able to take him alive.

In a bizarre twist The Box Turtle Bulletin says is reminiscent of the infamous “Twinkie Defense” used to deflect blame for the murder of gay San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk by a straight rival on the board, Anderson claims that he took too many doses of Mucinex DM, an over-the-counter congestion medication.

In a 911 recording released to the Daily Record on Tuesday, Anderson says that the pills “drove me mad”: “I Od’d on Mucinex DM. Dextromethorphan makes me feel a little weird and I took too many.”

Anderson told the telecommunicator that he shot his roommate three times with a shotgun and pistol, then mutilated the corpse with an ax so brutally that Starr would not be able to be identified: “You’re not going to know who it is,” Anderson says on the recording.

When asked why he killed his roommate, Anderson then says that it was because Starr was gay, and he was heterosexual. “I met [Starr] and went to his house and he took me in and I turned straight again. And he wanted to touch me and stuff and I wouldn’t let him, and he kept trying. And I waited until he went to sleep and then I shot him three times. And I mutilated him very badly and I’m sorry, I’m sorry. Oh God, please help me.”

Starr had likened his relationship to Anderson as a parental one, according to his Facebook page. On February 6, Starr posted that he had a “new son,” a person he was trying to make a better human being. So, Anderson’s account of being picked up at a gay bar and molested seems not to square with Starr’s understanding of the relationship, neither does Anderson’s suggestion that the encounter with his older gay roommate was recent and brief. The two men apparently lived together for several days.

As the case continues to sort itself out, it is well to remember that homophobia is a crooked phenomenon that erupts into violence in a variety of seemingly-irrational ways. It is also important to remember that Starr is unable to answer charges of sexual advances.

News reports are carrying only allegations from the self-interested point of view of the alleged killer. The Unfinished Lives Team sees enough in this story to indicate that a possible anti-gay hate crime was committed by a desperate young man who is ready to blame over-the-counter cold medications and the victim for his actions, but not himself.

Facing murder charges in the death of Stephen Starr (pictured below), Anderson can be heard telling the 911 operator at 4:45am Monday, "I took some pills and, um, the pills made me go mad and I murdered my roommate. shot him three times and then I used an axe and mutilated his body." While being taken away from the home the two men shared, Anderson told reporters he loved ("as a friend") his slain roommate. But during the 911 call, Anderson says, "I was straight and I wanted to go bisexual just to experiment and I went to a gay club and I met him and I went to his house. And he took me in and I turned straight again and he wanted to touch me and stuff and I wouldn't let him and he kept trying and I waited until he went to sleep and then I shot him 3 times and then I mutilated him very badly." Yes, that's the sound of his defense attorney mounting a gay panic-by-medicine defense.

Anderson's Facebook postings, however, indicate he may have planned the murder. Two successive posts on the site — where his status was listed "in a relationship" — declare his intent ("my killing starts tonight") and then appear to announce what he did ("i finally cracked guys i really did it this time").
In the middle of the 911 call (full recording below), Anderson says: "Oh lord, I don't know why I did this. … I can't believe I killed my roommate." He then tells the operator that when the police come they won't even recognize Starr's body. "The axe is inside his stomach."

Anderson has been assigned a new attorney, Robert Campbell, to represent him. He was provisionally appointed Scott Reilly. Campbell is court-appointed. Anderson’s next court date is April 4.

I remember reading that story in the Hickory Record also.
He is one sick man for sure. It will be interesting to see just what he does get. I guess I keep remembering Zahra and that Evila with the 2nd degree murder charge.

HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - A man accused of killing his roommate and mutilating his body pled guilty to second degree murder Thursday.

Michael Joseph Anderson, 20, was sentenced in Catawba County Superior Court to at least 16 in state prison, according to a news release from District Attorney James Gaither.

The murder occurred in February of last year when Anderson murdered his 36-year-old roommate Stephen Starr, of Mountain View.

Starr died on Valentine's Day from multiple gunshot wounds in 2011.

An autopsy shows that after Starr was killed, his body was mutilated and the word "JOKER" was carved on his chest and abdomen. Words also were written in ball point pen on his abdomen.

Anderson has been held without bond since the death. He reported the death to 911, saying he had overdosed on an over-the-counter cold medicine.
