SOUTH FAIRMOUNT – A three-year-old boy was killed and his mother was seriously injured after they were struck by a car Saturday morning. The accused driver was in court on Thursday for driving without a license
Cincinnati traffic officials believe Rodolfo Jose Temaj Felix, 24, of Newport, had been drinking when he “disregarded a traffic signal” just after 6:45 a.m. at Westwood and Grand avenues and struck the boy and his mother in a crosswalk.
The toddler, identified as Shakir West, was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where he later died. His mother, Niya Taylor, 29, was in critical condition at University Hospital.
An off-duty officer witnessed the crash and saw Felix try to leave the scene. He followed Felix, who was arrested a short time later, police said.
Felix was arraigned in Hamilton County Municipal Court on Thursday for driving without a license. A judge found him guilty and fined him for the violation.
According to police, Saturday's fatal crash happened when Felix was driving east on Westwood and Shakir and his mother were walking north along Grand.
The crash in still under investigation. Witnesses are asked to call Cincinnati Police’s Traffic Unit at 513-352-2514.
