Warning - not for faint of heart

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Harris County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a man they say brutally attacked his estranged wife. They are calling it one of the most brutal and vicious crimes they have ever seen. We have to warn you this case is very disturbing.

The suspect is in jail. The details of this case are so graphic that we can't even repeat some of them. Even veteran investigators are calling this the worst case of abuse they've seen in recent memory.

Lt. Ruben Diaz with the Sex Crimes said, "This victim was tortured, she was mutilated, she was kept against her will."

Emotional investigators didn't mince words as they detailed the gruesome sexual assault on a 33-year-old Houston woman that has left her permanently disfigured.

Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said, "God help me if such an animal were ever to introduce himself to my family."

On Thursday, deputies, along with members of the Gulf Coast Task Force, arrested Gregory Longoria, Jr., for violently attacking his estranged wife in his apartment. Officials say the woman left her common-law husband six months ago, after he repeatedly accused her of cheating. This week, investigators say Longoria drove to her home and threatened to kill her, her disabled parents and her children if she didn't follow his orders.

Court documents reveal Longoria tied her to his bed using extension cords, then began striking her in the face with his hand. The beating left bruises to her chest, neck and arms. Then he allegedly choked her with a belt around her neck and burned her body.

Lt. Diaz explained, "He had the baby asleep on the couch in the next room, probably listening to her own mother's screams for help."

After enduring 17 hours of torture, the woman got away to a hospital and the incident was reported to authorities. Within hours, Longoria was arrested. Sgt. James Bilinovich with the Gulf Coast Task Force was the one who picked him up. He describes Longoria as un-remorseful.

"He didn't have a whole lot to say," recalled Sgt. Bilinovich. "Once we pulled him out of the vehicle, he was placed in a vehicle and immediately taken to a substation. He didn't have a whole lot to say to us."

The woman is still recovering at an area hospital. Her one-year-old child was not harmed.

Longoria is being held at the Harris County Jail. He is charged with aggravated assault of a family member, causing serious bodily injury. The second degree felony could carry a punishment of between 2 and 20 years behind bars and a fine of up to $10,000.

HOUSTON (AP) -- A Houston-area man has been arrested on charges that he brutally attacked his estranged common law wife, who survived a 17-hour ordeal in which she was tortured and mutilated while tied down to a bed, Harris County sheriff's officials said Friday.

Gregory Longoria Jr. is accused of kidnapping his wife on Wednesday and holding her against her will until the next morning. He has been charged with aggravated sexual assault and aggravated assault of a family member and was being held without bond in the Harris County Jail.

Court records did not list a lawyer for him. He was set to appear in court on Monday.

According to a probable cause affidavit, when the 33-year-old woman began to scream, her attacker stuffed a rag in her mouth and then covered her face with a pillow until she lost consciousness. She was also choked with a belt tightened around her neck.

"It is a horrendous, horribly masochistic type of act that many of these deputies have never seen," Sheriff Adrian Garcia said.

Garcia, who was emotional during a news conference, compared Longoria to a "rabid dog" that had "to be put down."

Lt. Ruben Diaz said when authorities arrested Longoria on Thursday outside of a relative's apartment "he had a smirk on his face. He really didn't care."

A doctor who treated the woman at a Houston hospital said she will require reconstructive surgery but will still be permanently disfigured, according to the affidavit. Authorities said the woman was still hospitalized, recovering from her injuries.

Although court records named the woman, The Associated Press generally does not identify victims of sexual abuse.

The woman told authorities Longoria went to her parents' home and threatened to kill the elderly and disabled couple if she did not go with him to his northeast Houston apartment Wednesday. He also took their year-old daughter with them.

According to the affidavit, Longoria took naked pictures of his wife before he tied her to his bed using extension cords.

"This victim was tortured. She was mutilated. She was kept against her will. There was nothing she could actually do to help herself because of the longtime fear that this man had put into her heart. She felt like doing anything to help herself was going to put her family and herself and possibly her children in peril," said Diaz.

The couple's 1-year-old daughter was in a nearby room during the attack, Diaz said.

"She was in and out of consciousness (during the attack)," Diaz said. "He kept slapping her to keep her awake, telling her, 'You have to be awake for this."'

After Longoria attacked and mutilated his wife, she was able to convince him to let her go by pretending that she needed to go to a job interview, investigators said. After being let go, she went to a hospital. Officials there contacted authorities.

Authorities said Longoria had been abusing his wife throughout their seven-year relationship but that the abuse had intensified during the last six months after she had left him. While the couple has one child, the woman has three other kids from another relationship.

Diaz said the woman's family did not know she was being abused.

Authorities said Longoria has a long history of violence and has various prior arrests.

Court records show that in 2005, Longoria was sentenced to 160 days in jail for choking his ex-wife and that in 1992 he was given 10 years of probation on an attempted murder charge.

This guy must also be blind and crazy if he thinks she would be able to go to a job interview. But, thank God..it worked. This poor woman!

I thought the same thing. 2 to 20 years only?? Thank goodness..he has a rap sheet for abusing his ex wife so he will definitely get more than 2 years, and this crime is so brutal that he should get 20.
