I agree That's why we have wars. People's interpretations are all different. It's like a statement a person makes to someone. That someone may interpret the statement differently. Then, that person makes the statement to another person in their interpretation. And on and on and on. MOO.

It's not just interpretations, it's the very words themselves that one passage contradicts other passages. Killing for and against-Exodus 32:27 and Exodus 20:13...adultery for and against, Hebrew 13:4 and Numbers 31:18....lying, Exodus 1:18-20 and Exodus 20:16. I am sure Jeffs really loved Ephesians 5:22-24.

It's no mystery I am not a fan of religion, sorry but I don't think any of them have it right.

There is "religion" and then there is "sick religion". I don't even like that word. IMHO, any person who attempts to control others via their "religious beliefs" is WRONG!!!

Your last sentence says it all, Laga.

Normal Polygamist leader Jeffs hospitalized after fasting

Post by Wrapitup on Mon Aug 29, 2011 4:58 pm

APBy MICHAEL GRACZYK - Associated Press | AP – 2 hrs 14 mins ago

HOUSTON (AP) — Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs was hospitalized in critical condition Monday after telling corrections officers he's fasted in the weeks since receiving a life sentence for sexually assaulting underage followers he took as spiritual brides, a prison official said.

The 55-year-old head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, who has a history of refusing to eat while incarcerated, was stable, Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman Michelle Lyons told The Associated Press. It was uncertain how long he would be hospitalized.

Jeffs attorney Emily Detoto told the AP her client "hasn't been feeling well" and was taken to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler on Sunday night. She declined to elaborate.

Lyons said Jeffs told corrections officers he's fasted in the time since his conviction earlier this month, though it was not immediately clear how long he'd gone without food before being hospitalized.

During Jeffs' trial, prosecutors used DNA evidence to show he fathered a child with a 15-year-old and played an audio recording of what they said was him sexually assaulting a 12-year-old. Both were among 24 underage wives who prosecutors said Jeffs collected.

Court documents show Jeffs tried to hang himself in January 2007 while awaiting trial on rape charges in Washington County, Utah. He also threw himself against the walls of his cell and banged his head, although he later told a mental health expert he really wasn't trying to kill himself.

During a visit with a brother that same month that was videotaped by jail officials, Jeffs said he'd been fasting for three days and remained awake during the night. Days later, he was taken to a hospital and given medication for depression. The court documents said he'd lost 30 pounds, was dehydrated and suffering from sleep deprivation.

Jeffs also had to be temporarily force-fed in 2009 while in the Kingman, Ariz., jail.

In Texas, Jeffs has been in protective custody, which is among the most restrictive forms of imprisonment in the state. He was to be alone in his cell daily, not be involved in any work programs and to be out of his cell only to shower and for recreation by himself.

Jeffs is among only 85 inmates in the 156,000-prisoner Texas corrections system to be assigned protective custody.

The life sentence was the harshest possible for Jeffs' convictions and he isn't eligible for parole until he is at least 100 years old. He had been in a Huntsville prison immediately after his trial, then was moved last week to the Powledge Unit outside Palestine, about 100 miles southeast of Dallas.

Former church members have said Jeffs likely would continue to lead his Utah-based church from inside prison and that his followers likely still revere him as a prophet despite the considerable evidence presented at his trial showing he sexually assaulted girls as young as 12.

The basic principles of Jeffs' fundamentalist sect are rooted in polygamy, a legacy of early Mormon church teachings that held plural marriage brought exaltation in heaven. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the mainstream Mormon church, abandoned the practice in 1890 as a condition of Utah's statehood and excommunicates members who engage in the practice.

I say put him in general population and let the chips fall where they may. If he refuses to eat, so be it. Let him starve to death!

Remember Jim Jones?

His ability to brainwash large numbers of people and serve as their ultimate "Leader" was unsettling too.

Remember Adolpf Hitler? Same traits.

JMO

So now Jeff's will either die- making him a true martyr in the eyes of his followers, or he will be hospitalized and tied down and fed via a tube down his nose into his stomach. Not pleasant. If he lives I am sure he will have a story for his followers about that, too.
I think they should somehow stop him from communicating with his followers. Maybe without him they will somehow break up and see the light.
Maybe the state of Utah will make polygamy illegal and actually prosecute people that do it. Not look the other way.

Source: Polygamist leader Jeffs in coma in Texas hospital

Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs was in critical condition in a Texas hospital Monday after falling ill during a fast, a state prison official and his attorney said.
A source familiar with Jeffs' medical condition told CNN Monday that Jeffs was in a coma. The source did not provide further details.
The leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a breakaway Mormon sect, was sentenced early this month to life in prison plus 20 years for sexual assault. Jason Clark, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, said Jeffs was sent to a hospital in Tyler on Sunday night and was in critical but stable condition Monday.
"He was not eating or drinking enough fluids and also has some other medical conditions," Clark told CNN. He would not elaborate, citing inmate privacy rules.
Warren Jeffs found guilty Polygamist prophet preaches from jail
Jeffs told officials at the Powledge prison unit that he was not on a hunger strike, but had been "fasting," Clark said. His attorney, Emily Detoto, confirmed Jeffs' condition and that he had not been eating.
On August 4, Jeffs was found guilty of the aggravated sexual assaults of a 12-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl he claimed were his "spiritual wives." He will have to spend at least 45 years in prison before being eligible for release, state prosecutors said.
Jeffs was also found guilty of two counts of rape by accomplice in Utah in 2007 and was sentenced to 10 years to life in prison there.
His church is believed to have about 10,000 followers, and the practice of polygamy -- which the mainstream Mormon Church renounced more than a century ago -- is part of the sect's doctrine.

Warren Jeffs hospitalization raises questions about successor
By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

News that polygamist leader Warren Jeffs has landed in the hospital and is in critical condition raises the question of who will lead his breakaway Mormon sect when Jeffs dies or if he becomes incapacitated.

It turns out that Jeffs, 55 and serving a life-plus-20-year prison sentence, is likely to be replaced as head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) in the relative near term, even if he survives for decades to come.

Jeffs had succeeded in leading his church from jail in Texas in the leadup to his trial on sexual assault charges this summer, but prison is much more restrictive.

Before his trial, Jeffs had spent thousands on phone calls in which he’d deliver sermons, conduct excommunications and conduct other church business with his followers, who are believed to number about 10,000, with most based in Arizona, Texas and Utah.

But as a Texas prisoner, he is able to telephone only 10 people a month, and those people must be pre-registered on a visitors’ list, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Jeffs was convicted in early August of the aggravated sexual assaults of a 12-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl who he claimed were his "spiritual wives."

He fell ill Sunday while fasting, Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark said.

Jeffs remained in critical condition in a Texas hospital on Tuesday but was not in a coma – as was previously reported - and is expected to recover, state prison officials said.

Experts say the jockeying to replace Jeffs as FLDS head, or prophet, is already under way. The FLDS is a breakaway Mormon sect that practices polygamy, which the mainstream Mormon Church renounced more than a century ago.

In previous generations, the leadership of the LDS church had been determined by a priestly council. But that practice ended when Jeffs’ father took the reigns of the church in 1986 and instituted what FLDS church expert Ken Driggs calls a system of “one-man rule.”

A few months after Rulon T. Jeffs died in 2002, his son Warren announced that his dad had designated him successor before his death, a claim that one of Rulon’s wives – who Warren later married - corroborated.

Driggs, a lawyer and a mainstream Mormon who has written about the FLDS for decades, said the episode led many FLDS members to believe that future leaders had the power to designate successors before they died.

But he said the more likely scenario is that the FLDS community will collectively decide on who leads the church.

“It’s not like a formal election,” Driggs said. “It’s going to amount to what consensus in the community is. I don’t think it’s going be immediate. It’s going to take time.”

Many FLDS members have disavowed Jeffs over his criminal convictions, while others are defending him and casting his conviction on sexual assault charges as an act of persecution.

Jeffs younger brother, Lyle, is seen as a likely contender to be the church’s next prophet.

Another potential candidate is Willie E. Jessop, a former close aide to Jeffs, who said this year that Jeffs had lost legitimacy because of the sexual abuse charges against him.

“We wanted him so bad to be good that we were willing to condone his dereliction of people,” Jessop said in Texas after Jeffs’ convictions. “We built this golden calf. Now, we have to decide: Do we love God, or do we love the golden calf?”

Jessop recently said he’s not interested in assuming the job of leader, but some FLDS experts doubt he’d refuse the role.

Warren Jeffs' History of Self-Inflicted Harm in Jail

By COLLEEN CURRY
Aug. 31, 2011

Warren Jeffs' condition at a Texas prison hospital has improved from critical to serious, but that might not stop the polygamist sect leader from inflicting further illness and injury on himself in the future, according to one Jeffs expert.

"I don't think Warren wants to be alive," said Sam Brower, author of the Jeffs biography "Prophet's Prey." "He's going to continue to be a problem for Texas authorities."

Jeffs, 55, was hospitalized Sunday for illness at least partly related to his refusing to eat and drink, Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman Michelle Lyons said Monday. He told guards he had stopped eating since his conviction of sexual assault of minors earlier this month, she said.

Jeffs, leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, was sentenced to life in prison for the assaults on two girls, ages 12 and 15, whom he claimed were his spiritual wives.

Lyons disputed earlier reports that Jeffs was in a coma, but confirmed that he had been sedated. Jeffs was transferred from a public hospital, where he was taken when he was in critical condition, to a prison medical center Tuesday.

The sect leader has caused harm to himself while incarcerated before, including fasting, banging his head against a wall, trying to hang himself with his pajamas, and kneeling for such long periods of time that he developed hernias on his knees.

"When he was jailed in Washington County, he had these lucid moments where he started realizing he really screwed up," Brower said. Jeffs' brother, Nephi Jeffs, told Brower the self-proclaimed prophet admitted to him that he was a fraud.

"I'm not the prophet, I've never been the prophet. I'm the most immoral man on the face of the earth," Warren Jeffs reportedly said to his brother, according to Brower. He also said he had "immoral relations" with his brother and sister.

While serving time in the Washington County jail, he tried to hang himself and threw himself against cell walls headfirst. He was also hospitalized for dehydration and depression, according to court documents.

In 2009, he was temporarily force-fed while in an Arizona jail. Officials put a feeding tube into his nose and would strap him to his bed so that he could not kneel any longer, according to Brower. Blood from where the feeding tube was removed was visible in photos from when Jeffs was moved from Arizona to Utah, Brower said.

"He's setting himself up to be a martyr. He doesn't want his followers to know he's trying to kill himself, so if he calls it fasting, his followers can say he was on a fast and God took him," Brower said, adding that Jeffs predicted his own death before his most recent trial.

When Jeffs was sentenced to life in prison earlier this month, Brower said he assumed that the tougher conditions in state prison would take a toll.

"I had a feeling that the prison walls would start closing in on him pretty soon," Brower said, noting that at county jail, Jeffs had free access to phones that he could use to continue to lead his church followers.

"He could still communicate, still bully, still micromanage his followers there, but the minute he went to state prison and was subjected to cavity searches, head shaving, all of a sudden he's not the top dog anymore. He's not in control anymore," Brower said.

Warren Jeffs to Remain in Texas Prison

Jason Clark, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, said that Jeffs would remain at the prison hospital until he could return to Texas state prison in Palestine. He is scheduled to go on trial again in October for charges of bigamy, which could carry a 99 year sentence. He is currently serving a life sentence plus 20 years for sexual assault of two minors, a 12-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl whom he claimed were his spiritual wives.

Brower said Jeffs has had a 38-foot statue built of himself that he plans to have erected in Shore Creek, the sect's settlement.

"He is desperately trying to set himself up at the martyr, as somebody to leave this legacy of great leader to his people," Brower said. "So I think he's going to continue to be a problem, and Texas authorities are going to have to decide how far they're willing to go to keep him alive."

Normal Warren Jeffs’ attorney facing drug charge

Post by Wrapitup on Wed Aug 31, 2011 11:57 pm

BY LINDSAY WHITEHURST
The Salt Lake Tribune

An attorney for polygamous sect leader Warren Jeffs is facing a felony drug charge, according to court records.

Emily Munoz Detoto was charged with possession of a controlled substance on June 20 in Harris County, Texas, where her Houston law practice is based, according to court records. An arraignment in the case is scheduled for Sept. 30.

Neither Detoto nor her attorney, George McCall Secrest, have responded to calls for comment.

Detoto identified herself as Jeffs’ attorney when she spoke to the media, including the Associated Press, Monday after the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday night. Jeffs was sentenced to life in prison earlier this month for sexually assaulting two girls, ages 12 and 15, whom he took as plural wives.

Detoto, 39, first appeared as an attorney for Jeffs on July 1, less than two weeks after her possession charge was filed and shortly before Jeffs fired Fort Worth attorney Jeff Kearney. Detoto represented Jeffs in a second attempt to have state District Judge Barbara Walther recused on claims of bias before Jeffs’ trial. Detoto was unsuccessful and Walther presided over the trial, which began in late July.

Shortly after jury selection, though, Jeffs fired his team of seven attorneys, including Detoto, and decided to represent himself. But Walther refused to release the lawyers, ordering them to instead stay on as stand-by attorneys. Lead attorney Deric Walpole remained in the courtroom throughout the proceedings, which lasted just over two weeks, and Detoto also appeared frequently.

As of Wednesday, Detoto remained an attorney of record on both the sexual assault case and Jeffs’ upcoming bigamy trial, a court clerk confirmed.

Jeffs has been hospitalized with unspecified medical problems following a fast. His condition was upgraded to serious after his transfer to a prison hospital Tuesday.

Hiding behind the mask of religion, he's just another Phillip Garrido or Brian David Mitchell as far as I'm concerned.

Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs has been moved to an East Texas prison, where he will receive further treatment after becoming sick while fasting.

Texas prison system spokesman Jason Clark said Wednesday that Jeffs has been moved to the infirmary of the Beto Unit prison in Tennessee Colony, 85 miles southeast of Dallas. Clark said Jeffs will receive treatment there until he's well enough to be moved back to the nearby Powledge Unit.

Jeffs was discharged Monday night from the state prison hospital in Galveston.

You know, the humane thing to do would be to put him out of his misery.

His "If I can't have sex with little girls, I won't eat" attitude is an ignorant ploy... which I'm sure he has used many a ploy to get all the little-girl sex he could get over the years.

If I were guarding him, I'd never notice he was comatose. Not until his stinking, rotting body screamed out at me that justice had finally been served.

Jeffs was discharged Monday night from the state prison hospital in Galveston.

I wonder if he went into kidney failure from his fasting. What a dumbass. Maybe he will have to have dialysis for the rest of his "life" in prison. If he won't roll over and die for the greater good, maybe lifetime dialysis is Justice enough for all the girls and young women he tricked into sex under the guise of "marriage".

Hippy, let's hope that since he won't roll over and die for the greater good of man that man is rolling him over and over and he's going to rot from the inside out. That sick ass.

I just read through most of this thread. I don't know how I missed it.

I agree I agree I agree with all of your comments.

I don't understand why they are wasting State taxpayer money treating this sicko man. pulling hair confused I would be furious. I was glad to read that some of the followers are leaving this "cult"???.

I do remember the horrors of Jim Jones and Waco.

MOO is that I am too feisty to be able to get into a cult like these poor people have done. I have a mind of my own. It makes me wonder why they do?

Everybody needs something to believe in, and these cults know this and target the weak-minded, the lost, the easily influenced. They prey on these people. The people are happy to be sucked in, some get wise and 'possibly' leave, escape, etc but many stay.

Take the time to look up Benton Farms in Marshall county kansas. This is 3 miles from my house. I am friends with Anthony Gude and his ex wife Ruby . Thier kids are friends with my kids thier daughter Viv worked for me. Anthonys grand father was Thomas Hart Benton the famous painter. His mother Jessie Benton Lyman and her husband Mel Lyman were the leaders of communes .The one here is pretty much closed down now but at one time was quite active and you can hear alot of stories still today. I know there are still a few active groups one in calif. one in Boston and one at Marthas vinyard, all of which Ive been invited to visit. As a teen we went to the " commune" to party, most of the time we were very welcome other times not but I now believe the times we were turned away were when strange things were happening. I have heard stories from the family that make me drop my jaw but not enough to accuse one certain person short of Jessies husband Mel Jessie is a very unique but loving person still today. Its easy to see why so many followed them.

I lived on a commune for 2 yrs called The Farm. It is where the hippies out of Haight Ashbury and their Caravan of busses finally came to rest after leaving California so semi-famously. The Farm is in Summertown, TN. This was not a cult. Just a bunch of people living together and doing it simply and without meat, no leather or wearing animal skins, etc.
It was a very interesting experience. They still exist today but is hi-tech and progressive, but still living off what they grow, etc. Not just a bunch of hippies, there are doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc who decided to drop out of this society and live more simple. They were "going green" way before it was cool.
The farm is run by Stephen Gaskin.

Normal Report: Jeffs bans sex for all in sect but 15 men, partners

Post by raine1953 on Thu Jun 21, 2012 7:21 pm

Planning for the future offspring for his sect, imprisoned polygamist leader Warren Jeffs has reportedly ordered all of his 10,000 followers to stop having sex except for 15 men and the women they choose, ABC News reports.

Jeffs, the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of the Latter-day Saints, a Mormon breakaway sect, is serving a life sentence in Texas for his 2011 conviction for bigamy and for having had sex with two girls, one 15 and the other 12. DNA showed he fathered a child with the 15-year-old.

The sex ban was issued from prison and covers married couples, former members told ABC's Salt Lake City affiliate. No FLDS woman can refuse if she is "called" by one of the elite 15, one former member said.

"Women have been reduced to nothing more than breeding stock," she said. The station writes she "escaped the group years ago but still has loved ones who are members."

Most remaining members live in Hilldale, Utah, and Colorado City, Ariz. Today, the Justice Department sued those towns, claiming that they discriminate against non-sect members and are enforcing edicts issued by Jeffs.

How is he communicating w/these followers? Letters? Or, are they actually coming to visit him?

I would think the prison would cease his letter-writing and not allow him to dictate or have any contact w/that sect/cult or whatever the hay it is. my 2 cents

Jailed Polygamist Leader Warren Jeffs Issues Hundreds of Orders From Prison

Six years after Warren Jeffs was first arrested and later sentenced to life in prison for sexually assaulting children, it's almost as though the fundamentalist leader, whom the faithful call their "prophet," never left Colorado City.

Jeffs' followers, who live in the desert town nestled on the border between Arizona and Utah, are a radical splinter group of the mainstream Mormon church who call themselves the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Watch the full story on "20/20: Breaking Polygamy" Friday, Nov 23, 2012 at 10 p.m.

"Anybody who thinks that Warren Jeffs' incarceration ended his rule in this community has no idea what they're talking about. He is in many ways more powerful because now he's martyred," said reporter Mike Watkiss, who has covered the community of 8,000 people for 25 years.

A raid in 2008 on the group's Yearning for Zion compound in Eldorado, Texas, brought the FLDS community into the national spotlight. Authorities found a polygamous community and pregnant child brides. Pictures of women in pastel prairie clothes with tightly braided hairstyles and stories of the controlling, male-dominated environment offered the world a glimpse into the lives of the reclusive group.

Jeffs Sentenced to Life as Additional Alleged Victim Speaks Out Watch Video
"The prophet literally tells people where they will live, whom they will marry," Watkiss said. "Warren buys the allegiance of these men because they can't get into heaven without him, because he needs to give them three wives. That's the only way you're going to get to heaven."

Despite the fact Jeffs spends his days in a Texas prison, his followers in Colorado City have not left him.

His presence is felt in homes, offices, on computers and even cell phones in Colorado City.

"We miss our prophet, Warren Jeffs," said Dr. Maryam Holm, the town's primary health care provider. "We know he is innocent and we all yearn for his deliverance, to be able to see him again."

A year-long investigation by ABC News' "20/20" revealed that Jeffs' presence extends far beyond his prison walls and into the daily lives of his faithful followers. It started when he ordered followers to destroy all of their children's toys.

"At home you couldn't have any toys. You couldn't ride bikes either. 'Cause he gave away all our bikes. I didn't even get a chance to ride mine before I gave it away," said 6-year-old Nellie Steed, who left the sect after her mother was banished by Jeffs.

The FLDS leader has such a tight grip on the day-to-day lives of the faithful that he has even banned corn and dairy products, said Jeffs' former bodyguard, Willie Jessop, who compared the power his former boss still exerts to notorious cult leaders David Koresh and Jim Jones.

Earlier this year, Jeffs forbade intimacy between husbands and wives and selected 15 men to father all future FLDS children.

"If a woman wants to have a baby or whatever, she has to go to one of those 15 men. But then she has to have two other men with the one of the 15 men in the room to witness," Willie Steed, 19, told ABC News' Amy Robach.

Steed, who is Nellie's older brother, broke free from the FLDS church in February. Jeffs first banished his father for no reason, and then his mother, Suzette Steed, who refused to leave without her children. Willie agreed to guide "20/20" through the strange and clandestine world.

Following every move were the "God Squad," Jeffs' secret police tasked with keeping an eye on the media.

"They know where we are and they just follow us," Steed said.

In the desert sits a newly-built multi-million dollar home, the product of another one of Jeffs' prison edicts.

"They said if we build it then it would melt the bars or whatever in his jail and he would be released," Steed said.

But Jeffs' influence extends far beyond the daily lives of his followers.

When ABC News visited city hall and the police department, officials declined to answer any questions about Jeffs.

This year, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against town officials, accusing them of acting as an arm of the FLDS.

In response, the Mohave County Sheriff's Office has stepped up patrols in Colorado City, but it's proven to be a challenge to police a town that views law enforcement as religious persecution.

"They won't talk to you because of who you are and who you represent," said Sgt. Mike Hoggard of the Mohave County Sheriff's Office. "It's troubling."

It was this tyranny of control that caused Willie Steed to question the values of the FLDS when he made the decision to leave.

"The church can just totally kill a family. In just the matter of three days, two days, an hour. And they can break the spirit of their people," he said. "And as you've seen coming out to this place ... they have nothing left, they have no hope, and they can see no future."
