Missing Nebraska Girl, Kerra Wilson's Stepfather Arrested After Her Body Found

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – The Nebraska State Patrol says investigators have found the body of an 8-year-old Panhandle girl who in a remote area of Sioux County.
The patrol says the Kerra Wilson's stepfather, 32-year-old Salvador Carlos Lopez of Mitchell, has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder in her death.
Wilson was last seen a little before 8 a.m. Wednesday as her stepfather reportedly dropped her off at Mitchell Elementary School, but she wasn't reported missing until Wednesday afternoon because school officials didn't know anything was wrong.
The patrol says a local rancher provided a tip that led to the discovery of the girl's body.

Salvador Carlos Lopez, 32, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Kerra Wilson, according to court documents. Investigators found Kerra's body Thursday evening in a rugged area of Sioux County — miles away from the family's home — after a rancher reported seeing something suspicious.

A Nebraska State Patrol investigator said in court documents that Lopez acknowledged killing his stepdaughter after Kerra's body was found.

Police spent two days searching for the girl after Lopez and her mother, Amada Lopez, reported her missing. Lopez had claimed he dropped her off at school Wednesday, but investigators don't believe that.

Authorities said Friday that the last time the brown-haired, blue-eyed girl from Mitchell was seen by anyone other than her stepfather was Tuesday evening, when Kerra was with her grandparents.

Mitchell Elementary School principal Kirk Kuxhausen said Kerra did not appear in any of the security camera footage shot in the school or on the playground on Wednesday.

Investigators weren't initially able to find the body because the surrounding terrain was so rugged. Investigators were still trying to determine when and where the girl was killed, Nebraska State Patrol Lt. Monica Bartling said.

"We were hoping to bring Kerra safely home to her family; sadly, we weren't able to do that," Bartling said.

Kerra Wilson has three younger siblings who are all staying with family members. A phone listing for Kerra's mother was disconnected Friday.

Lopez' co-workers at the Pathfinder Irrigation District declined to comment Friday.

A judge ordered Lopez to be held without bond at least until his initial court appearance Monday morning. He has been held in the Scotts Bluff county jail since Thursday. Bartling said Lopez does not have an extensive criminal record.

Authorities have said Salvador Lopez, 32, killed Kerra Wilson and left her body on remote ranchland several miles north of their home in Mitchell last week.

Scottsbluff radio station KNEB reported (http://bit.ly/qvFyUu ) Monday that Lopez appeared in court without an attorney. Lopez didn't want an attorney, he told Judge Russ Harford of Sioux County Court.

At the request of the prosecutor, Harford ruled that Lopez will be held without bail at least until his arraignment in Sioux County District Court. No date for that hearing was set.

HARRISON, Neb. — A Mitchell man accused of killing his 8-year-old stepdaughter made his first appearance in court Monday morning.
Salvador Carl Lopez, 32, of Mitchell, appeared without an attorney and waived his right to a preliminary hearing in proceedings in Sioux County Court on Monday morning. Lopez is charged with first-degree murder, a Class I felony, in the death of Kerra Wilson, who has been identified as Lopez’s stepdaughter.

The girl had been reported missing by her grandmother on Wednesday, Sept. 21, after she did not show up for school and relatives were contacted.
Officials discovered her body on a ranch north of Mitchell Thursday.
A complaint against Lopez places Wilson’s death as being on Sept. 21, though it is not known if that has been confirmed by an autopsy. The Star-Herald has not yet learned when an autopsy has been scheduled. Sioux County Attorney Adam Edmund declined to make any statements in connection with the case. He said all statements from the county attorney’s office would be made in press releases.

During Monday’s court hearing, Lopez clarified his name as Salvador Carl Lopez, correcting an official complaint that identified him as Salvador Carlos Lopez. His voice faltered on the first “yes” answer he gave to Judge Russell Harford as Harford asked if the man understood that he was charged with first-degree murder, a Class I felony, in the girl’s death.

Lopez also told the judge that he understood that death is the maximum penalty for the offense.

Harford also repeatedly asked and had Lopez state that he understood that he had a right to an attorney and a right to a preliminary hearing. Lopez said he did not want an attorney to represent him and waived his right to a preliminary hearing. With Lopez waiving his right to a preliminary hearing, his next appearance in court will be in Sioux County District Court. A date for his court hearing was not yet available.

Lopez will remain jailed without bond. Edmunds said that authorities requested no bond as Lopez had made statements admitting the allegations and that evidence collaborated his statements.

Edmund said that children and witnesses also remained living in the Lopez household and that Lopez had ties to Mexico, including a father and wife who live there.
Sioux County authorities said that Lopez would be housed in the Dawes County jail pending trial.

He had been held in the Scotts Bluff County Corrections Center.

I've heard ONLY grandparents mentioned. Very strange. Grandparents and a step dad.

From what Ive seen the mother was in the home. Her bio father has no idea she exists.Her mother never told him she was pregnant. Not sure how she went from being with the grandparents to being with the step father without the mother seeing her. They gave the mothers name during the presser when they told her body had been found. that may be the same place I heard the father didnt know about her. Im home now so cant watch the presser to find out. Beware the Presser is a tear jerker. Monica the woman from state LE was once my daughters neighbor and one of the nicest people I have ever met. She broke my heart watching her. the first presser is when she was still missing the second after she was found.

Here’s the noxiously repugnant deal folks…

Seems that atrocity towards the little ones is not limited to the loathsome acts that can be committed upon them by their biological parents…no, no….that would be far too limiting and where would we be in terms of these stories if we were limited by the protagonist pool? Apparently step parents feel free to join in the wretched affairs of the devil and whole heartedly jump into the world of abuse and inhumanity towards children.

8 year old Kerra Wilson, a vibrant and happy girl by all accounts, disappeared not too long ago some miles near her home in Sioux County, Nebraska. According to Kerra’s mother, Amada Lopez, she last saw her daughter on Wednesday when she dropped her off for another day of learning and recess at school…but she never made it home. Amada explains that she reported the disappearance to the police who spent two days looking for the girl in hopes of bringing her home safe and sound.

Now…as we all know from the reprehensible theme of this setting….Kerra never made it home. Unfortunately, her lifeless body was discovered two days later by a rancher who apparently “saw something suspicious”. Following questioning, the girl’s step father, a dapper individual with a real sense of fatherly love, Salvador Carlos Lopez, admitted to killing the girl.

School officials went on to report that Kerra had never made it to school as she was not on any of the security tapes and had no interaction with teachers or peers. This places her last appearance on Tuesday evening….meaning…? Meaning that her ever so trusting mother, Amada, was apparently lying. I say apparently and it should be noted that it is apparently in the sense that it is allegedly….but I think we all know how to read between the lines of allegedly and….well, you know.

So…where does that leave us in this charming tale of frightful contempt? Where does it always leave us? Another dead child and a step parent being held without bond in the Scotts Bluff County Jail until his appearance before the judge. Meanwhile, and this is the quite inexplicable part…the three surviving siblings are left to forever wonder who they can really trust and if all adults charged with their care are really who they claim to be. Reports say that these children are staying with family members and attempts to reach Amada for comment have been futile as she diconnected her phone shortly after Salvador was arrested and ‘fessed to the deed. Naturally.

It’s a brave new world folks…too bad Kerra didn’t live to see it.

A western Nebraska man has been given life in prison Friday for murdering his stepdaughter. Prosecutors say he did it because the girl was going to tell her mother that he, “touched me in a bad way”.

Eight-year-old Kerra Wilson was murdered in Mitchell, Nebraska September 21. At first, it was believed she might have been abducted after her stepfather Salvador Carlos Lopez dropped her off at school.

However, Lopez never did take her to school that day. Instead, he admitted to killing her and leaving her body in a remote area several miles from their home.

Lopez, 32, agreed to a deal that will put him in jail for life. He avoided the possibility of the death penalty.

The Scottsbluff Star-Herald reports Sioux County Attorney Adam Edmund says Lopez deserved to die in prison.
