HOENIX -- The grandmother of an Arizona girl missing for more than a week pleaded Thursday for more attention from police investigators and the national media, saying that the case of her granddaughter's disappearance hasn't been made a priority because she's black.

Jahessye (JES'-ee) Shockley was last seen Oct. 11 by her three older siblings at their Glendale apartment in suburban Phoenix while their mother was out running an errand.

Glendale police believe Jahessye left the home through the front door but don't know what happened next. They have no suspects, evidence or promising leads despite search efforts that included more than 100 officers and volunteers canvassing the area within three miles of the girl's home.

Jahessye's grandmother, Shirley Johnson, and about a dozen of her friends and neighbors went to the state capitol in Phoenix on Thursday to draw more attention to the case in hopes of finding the girl alive.

"The Glendale Police Department has not brought this to the forefront. They botched this investigation," Johnson told reporters. "I believe it's because she's a little black girl."

Glendale police Sgt. Brent Coombs said that he can't say strongly enough how the girl's race does not matter to investigators.

"What matters is there's a 5-year-old girl missing," he said. "It's the department's No. 1 priority. There's so much mystery around it and we've got an obligation to get to the bottom of it and try our best to bring her back safely or find out where she's at."

Nine days after Jahessye went missing, the department still had dozens of investigators assigned to the case Thursday. They were combing over all the information they've collected and following up on more than 100 leads that have come into the department so far.

The department is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for anyone who leads them to a break in the case, on top of the $5,000 offered by the girl's family and the $1,000 offered by Arizona's Silent Witness tip line.

"It's still as important as it was the first day that we were working the case," Coombs said. "We're never going to stop."

Authorities say that if the girl had some type of accident, they would have found a sign of her by now. They say the fact that they haven't points to a possible kidnapping.

"It is our belief that if she would have just simply walked away and not been interacted with by anybody that might have had the wrong intention, we would have found her by now," Coombs said.

Police say they have no reason to suspect anyone in Jahessye's family in her disappearance, including her mother, Jerice Hunter, who is eight months pregnant.

State Child Protective Services removed Hunter's three other children from the home after Jahessye disappeared but have not said why.

Hunter declined to speak about her other children earlier this week but told The Associated Press that she just wants Jahessye back home.

"If you have my child, please take her to a safe place, a public place where she can be located," she said. "The family will not be the same until the child is returned, and I will be relentless in my search."

Johnson said Thursday that she feels that she has to take matters into her own hands, saying her granddaughter's disappearance hasn't gotten the attention that it deserves.

"People in California have barely even heard what's going on," she said. "Somehow, somebody's suppressing something because the local media is keeping it local, and with all due respect to the media, it's not getting out. ... This is about my grandbaby."

Johnson wore a purple T-shirt that said "Grandma won't stop!" She chose the color because it was Jahessye's favorite. Her friends and neighbors showed up at the state capitol to support Johnson, also wearing purple shirts that read, "Hope" and "Bring Jahessye home."

Glenn Johnson, who is of no relation to Shirley Johnson and didn't meet the family until after Jahessye disappeared, said that he's been searching the girl's neighborhood and passing out fliers for a few hours every day on his motorized scooter.

"I've got very little confidence in the police, mostly because they have no logical place to look," he said. "I don't see how she could be in this area and not be found at this point."

He said that he doesn't think the police department has been racially biased, adding that it conducted an "aggressive" search of the neighborhood.

"I don't think it makes a difference whether she's white, black or green. If there's no leads, there's no leads," he said. "Sometimes it's a dead end."

The mother in this case was sentenced to 8 years due to severe child abuse and torture of her children. She was pregnant with Jahessye at the time. She got custody back of her children including the one that she beat so severely with an electrical cord that caused her to be sentenced to 8 years which she did not serve. The grandmother is wondering why there isnt any press on this case as in the baby Lisa case. I truly believe its not because Jahessye is black but because this mothers history is so heinous that everyone believes she killed the child.

The oldest, a then-14-year-old boy, told investigators that his mother routinely punched him and whipped him with sticks and that she also beat his sisters, usually with an extension cord, but he’d never told anyone.
“Hunter told him if he were to say anything, all of the children would be taken away and it would be his fault,” police wrote.
The children were immediately taken away that day, once police
saw the injuries to the two youngest girls and heard details of the 7-year-old being beaten the previous day.
The child told police she was running around the master bedroom to escape a whipping from her mother.
“Hunter subsequently summoned assistance from Shockley who walked into the room and held the little girl down on the bed by grabbing both of her wrists,” the report says. “The seven year old was naked and facing upwards as her mother repeatedly whipped her with the extension cord across her stomach, upper legs, pubic area and on her back side. Raised bloodied welts, scars and lacerations were found … all about these areas of the seven-year-old’s body.”
Hunter pleaded no contest to four counts of corporal punishment of
a child. She went to prison shortly after giving birth to Jahessye in Arizona. While the grandmother took custody of the older children in California, Hightower says she and three other cousins took Jahessye.
Hunter served about half of her eight-year sentence before being paroled in May 2010, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. (Shockley remains in prison.) She was given unsupervised parole.
Hightower says Hunter and the child who had been so severely beaten came to Arizona shortly after she was paroled. She says the mother wanted Jahessye and became angry when the four cousins wouldn’t immediately hand her over. Hightower says Jahessye was returned to her mother on Aug. 18, 2010, after police showed up and said they had to surrender the child.

The grandmother calls LE because the children were being abused and now she says that her daughter didn't have anything to do with Jahessye's disappearance. How can she be sure considering her daughter's history?

On Friday morning, Shirley Johnson, the grandmother of missing 5-year-old Jahessye Shockley spoke publicly, saying she doesn't believe the girl's mother had anything to do with her granddaughter's disappearance.

Jahessye was reported missing by her mother, Jerice Hunter, on Oct. 11, 2011. Hunter claimed when she returned home at about 5:00 p.m. after running an errand, she found the front door open and the child gone. She had left Jahessye home with her three older siblings, ages 6, 9 and 12, who, according to police have said they don't know where Jahessye is or what happened to her.

Johnson and Jahessye's aunt, Tammy Hunter, appeared on HLN Friday and CNN Saturday, attempting to bring national attention to the girl's case.

A cousin who assisted in raising Jahessye Shockley said Friday she contacted Child Protective Services several times to report suspected abuse of the missing girl and her siblings.

Mahogany Hightower told AZCentral.com that she last saw Jahessye in April during a family get together, where the missing 5-year-old begged to stay with her.

“She cried really bad... We told her you can't come home with us now but you will later,” Hightower said. She noted that Jahessye was frantic, telling her “I've got to go now.”

Hunter is now eight months pregnant and refused to speak with AZCentral regarding Hightower's story except to say her cousin's claim was “not credible.”

The children were removed from the home and placed into her grandmother's care. Hunter gave birth to Jahessye and subsequently served time for child abuse, thus she was taken in by other relatives, Hightower said.

Hightower noted she did not want to return Jahessye to her mother once Hunter was released from prison, but on Aug. 18, 2010, police showed up at her door ordering her to surrender the child.

She told AZCentral she couldn't understand how Hunter was able to get her older children back after serving time for abuse. She said she contacted CPS between Feb. and May 2011 because she suspected the children were again being abused and believed Jahessye's two bottom teeth had been knocked out. According to Hightower, the case worker visited the older children's school and Hunter's home, but said nothing could be done.

She believes CPS in both Ariz. and Calif., along with law enforcement “dropped the ball” in this case and wanted to speak out about the action – or inaction – of authorities.

This story makes me sick - also if the mother is pregnant and the man she was married to is in prison then she is screwing around with someone else which doesnt surprised me. She has all these children and she gets pregnant again - they should never have given her any of these children back.

The mother of a missing 5-year-old told a Phoenix news station Sunday that she is a suspect in her daughter’s disappearance, but a police spokesman denied that claim.
“They’re focusing on me as a suspect but I don’t mind…The number one priority is my baby,” Jerice Hunter said to CNN affiliate KPNX
Hunter’s daughter, Jahessye Shockley, has been missing for nearly a week. Hunter reported that the 5-year-old disappeared from her Glendale apartment while she was out running an errand last Tuesday afternoon.
Glendale police Sgt. Brent Coombs told KPNX that Hunter’s 2006 conviction for abusing her other children is a part of their investigation, but Hunter is not considered a suspect in Jahessye’s disappearance at this time.
Coombs could not be reached for comment Monday morning.

“Why would they take them kids and make them grieve all by themselves?” Johnson asked.While relatives and members of the family’s church passed out fliers and urged residents to call in tips Sunday, grandmother ShirleyJohnson said that Hunter’s three other children, ages 6, 9 and 13, have been placed in foster care.
Hunter, who is eight months pregnant, has said the older children were supposed to be watching Jahessye while she was out for about an hour on Tuesday, but when she returned around 5:00 pm, her youngest daughter was gone. Police initially considered the possibility that she wandered off on her own, but concern grew as time passed and she did not turn up.
An Amber Alert was issued last Wednesday after someone reported a girl matching Jahessye’s description being placed in a car by a 25-30-year-old black female, but the alert was canceled on Friday. An extensive search of the area surrounding the family’s apartment complex was also completed last week.
Police say they are still actively searching for Jahessye, but all of the leads they have followed so far have been fruitless. According to KPNX, one tip authorities pursued over the weekend involved a woman dressed like a man seen holding a girl who looked like Jahessye on a bus.
Court documents obtained by CNN affiliate KNXV show that in October 2005 Hunter and husband George Shockley were accused of beating and whipping her children. In early 2006, Hunter pleaded no contest to four counts of causing injury to a child and admitted to whipping her then-7-year-old daughter with an extension cord.
George Shockley, a registered sex offender, is currently incarcerated in California.

I understand one of the cousins who had taken care of her before she had to be handed over to the mother said that Jahassey looked like her teeth had been knocked out and wanted to go home with the cousin right then. The remaining children are probably too terrified to speak as they have seen that no matter what horror is inflicted on them - the ADULTS who are supposed to save them just give them back to these monsters.

Cousin says she called CPS about Jahessye Shockley

A relative who helped raise a missing 5-year-old Glendale girl says she called Child Protective Services several times to report her suspicions that the girl and her older sister were being abused.

Mahogany Hightower, one of four cousins who took care of Jahessye Shockley for the first four years of her life, told me she last saw the little girl in April, at a family barbecue.

“She cried really bad, telling us she wanted us to take her home,” Hightower said. “She wanted to go home now. We told her you can't come home with us now but you will later. She goes, “I can't go later. I've got to go now.' ”

It is now 11 days since Jahessye disappeared, vanishing out of thin air while her mother, Jerice Hunter, was out doing errands.

Hunter, who is eight months pregnant, refused to talk to me Friday about the concerns of Hightower and other family members — the ones who took care of her daughter while she was in a California prison for beating her other children. Glendale police say that Hunter isn't a suspect.

“I don't care about what she (Hightower) told you,” Hunter said, clearly agitated by my call. “I don't communicate with those people. Those people are not credible. They're angry, OK?”

Phoenix police spokesman Steve Martos couldn't confirm that police were dispatched but added that a report wouldn't necessarily have been written.

Hightower says she had concerns about the older child's wellbeing and called California CPS in February.

“I couldn't understand why Jerice was able was to get (the older child) back due to the fact that abuse to (the older child) was the reason why she was in prison from the beginning,” she said.
She says a California CPS worker told her that the agency was no longer involved and advised her to call Arizona CPS.

Hightower said she talked with an Arizona CPS caseworker several times between February and early May, to report the family's concerns that the two girls were being abused, including suspicions that Jahessye's two bottom teeth had been knocked out. She says the caseworker visited the older girl's school and Hunter's home but said there was nothing she could do.

“She basically said that the kids told her there was no abuse,” Hightower said.

CPS declined to comment on Friday. The agency has removed Hunter's other children and put them into foster care.

Hightower is astonished that authorities allowed a child to be left with a mother who repeatedly whipped and scarred her.

“I want it to be known that CPS dropped the ball,” she said. “That in California, they dropped the ball. In Arizona, they dropped the ball. Even the police department, they dropped the ball.”

Whether any of that had anything to do with Jahessye's disappearance, however, is yet to be seen.
While Hightower believes that the children were being abused, she's not ready to say that abuse is linked to Jahessye's disappearance.

Like the rest of us, she's unsure what to make of a 5-year-old disappearing into thin air. Like the rest of us, she's holding out hope that her little cousin will be found, alive and well.

“I really don't know what to think,” she says. “I know there was abuse in the home and I reported it.”

God, how scarey. Those poor kids, begging relatives to take them home with them, and being returned to the home and to the people who abused them. WHIPPING with a cord? Gads, if that doesn't get your kids taken away from you, what will??

DSS/ CPS dropped the ball here, for sure. If they were following the law, then the law needs to be changed. Children should be protected and be kept safe.

Mother of missing 5-year-old Glendale girl gives birth

The mother of a missing Glendale girl has given birth to another baby, who is now in the custody of state Child Protective Services, according to the family.

CPS on Monday would not confirm the newborn has been taken from the mother, Jerice Hunter.

The agency previously confirmed that three of Hunter's other children were removed a day after her 5-year-old daughter went missing. Jhessye Shockley was reported missing three weeks ago today.

Hunter called 911 on Oct. 11 to say she had returned home after running an errand to find Jhessye gone. The mother said the girl had been at home near 45th and Glendale avenues with her other siblings, the oldest of whom is 13, at the time.

A police search of the area, an Amber Alert, multiple rallies and media attention have failed to turn up the missing kindergartner.

Glendale police Monday said that they had no new leads to report. Throughout the investigation, they have said it is unclear whether the girl wandered off, was abducted or was the victim of foul play.

Within the past week, police assigned a homicide detective as the lead investigator on the case, though authorities say missing-person and child-crimes detectives continue to probe Jhessye's disappearance.

A Glendale police spokesman, Sgt. Brent Coombs, said solving the case would probably be more a matter of time passing than any big breaks.

Police on Monday continued to say Hunter is not a suspect.

Investigators have yet to give Hunter a polygraph test, though they say they are working with the FBI to schedule one.

Hunter came to police attention six months before Jhessye went missing.

A family member had alleged Hunter might have been abusing two of the children, and Glendale police followed up.

A police report from April said Hunter's parental rights to some of her other children had been revoked in California, where she served time for corporal punishment involving her children. A pretrial report indicated Hunter's family history of abuse played a role in the way she disciplined her children, but a court-appointed psychologist concluded the mother deeply regretted whipping one of her children with an extension cord and that counseling would help her learn effective parenting skills.

Hunter had given birth to Jhessye shortly before beginning to serve 3½ years in a California prison. Family members in Arizona say they cared for Jhessye. Hunter's mother, Shirley Johnson, had custody of the other children, according to the April police report. The report said an Arizona CPS worker talked with Johnson, who had said she returned the children to Hunter after she was released from prison and moved to Arizona.

Glendale police closed their investigation after finding no signs of abuse, noting CPS was looking into the matter.

I agree with that Artgal. I've never read that she's a POI or a suspect. I'm wondering if LE considers her a POI and is just keeping it quiet.

Glendale police Det. Jeff Daukas tells CBS 5 Hunter's polygraph test has not yet been scheduled. Daukas says it will be conducted by the FBI or Glendale police.

Meanwhile, Jhessye's aunt confirmed with CBS 5 that Child Protective Services took Hunter's baby after she gave birth late last month.

Twelve year old Polly Klaas was kidnapped from a slumber party at her northern California home in 1993.

A man with a knife tied up her friends and took Polly. Police and volunteers couldn't find her for two months. Then parolee Richard Allen David, spooked after an encounter with an officer when his car was stuck in the mud, is believed to have driven to an isolated area, strangled Polly and buried her in a shallow grave.

He's now on death row in San Quentin for her rape, murder and kidnapping.

Polly's father, Mark Klaas has dedicated his life to finding missing children and being an advocate for strong sentences for violent offenders.

One week out of school? Dont the schools check on students anymore - just to make one phone call to see why the child isnt there? I dont understand that. If someone had made a call maybe at least the mother would have had to give an excuse as to why she wasnt attending. Maybe they can get something out of the older children who must be terrified that they will be given back to her AGAIN.

Jhessye Shockley, also spelled Jahessye, has been missing from Arizona for several weeks and her case has appeared to be in competition for media attention with that of missing baby Lisa Irwin of Kansas City, Missouri. The details in this case are few, but one thing is for certain: missing kindergartener's mother has a pretty gruesome past concerning her children. Could this past be any reason as to why the case hasn't gotten much media attention?

In the past few weeks, bloggers and small news sources have blamed racism or "missing white girl syndrome" for the seemingly lack of coverage this has gotten. However, it could also be speculated that the child's mother's past could also be playing a role in the lack of in-depth coverage. In 2006, Jerice Hunter was convicted and sentenced to eight years in a California prison for child abuse and the torture of one of her daughters. Her family claims that the police have focused on Jerice too much, and should be looking elsewhere for Jhessye Shockley (or Jahessye).

In the latest reports, police in Glendale are saying that they have hope that the missing Arizona girl will be found. The case was recently reviewed by America's Most Wanted, which always seems to help when a missing persons case is being investigated. For over 20 years, America's Most Wanted has helped publicize and bring to attention a myriad of crime cases, and has ultimately helped in solving several of them. With Jhessye's story being highlighted by AMW, and with it being featured on their site, it's probably safe to say that this little girl will continue to get the publicity she deserves so she can get justice for whatever happened to her.

As for Jerice Hunter, nobody knows what is going through this woman's mind and nobody knows for certain whether or not she's involved in her young daughter's mysterious disappearance. However, it's important that police take a look at the closest people around the missing child, including the person who has already had a criminal past with extreme child abuse to the point of nearly serving a decade behind bars.

Jhessye Shockley Missing: Police Express Optimism Ariz. Girl Will Found

After more than three weeks since Jhessye Shockley disappeared, investigators are continuing a strenuous search to find the little girl.

Jhessye Shockley, 5, has been missing from her Glendale, Ariz., home since Oct. 11, 2011, according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

According to Phoenix, Ariz.\'s New Times, Glendale police Sgt. Brent Coombs says "investigators remain optimistic that they'll find Shockley."

There has been renewed confidence of finding the 5-year-old, after the case recently received national attention on the widely viewed missing person's TV program "America’s Most Wanted" (AMW).

Additionally, information about the child’s disappearance has been posted on AMW's website.

Still, police have admitted to finding no new leads in the Arizona case.

Accordingly, Coombs declined to address questions on whether the child's mother, Jerice Hunter, might be implicated in the case.

Hunter was sentenced to eight years in a California prison in 2006 for child abuse. The charges included the torturing of her 7-year old daughter and the infliction of physical injuries on her other children.

Since the beginning of the investigation, the family has expressed frustration that attention has been inordinately placed on Hunter instead of on the missing girl. Hunter recently stated:

"We feel that law enforcement is not active in finding Jhessye and that they're more active in persecuting me instead of finding out where she is," according to The Associated Press.

Little Jahessye Shockley was reportedly last seen by Hunter when she left the little girl in her apartment before stepping out on an errand.

Jhesseye, who is African-American, has brown eyes with shoulder length hair, and stands approximately 3 feet and 5 inches tall, when last seen.

Initially more than 100 officers and a number of volunteers searched through potential hiding places and overlooked areas, as well as focused on sex offenders, in addition to knocking on the doors of individuals in surrounding communities, in their effort to find the little girl.

That mother was NOT hysterical in any way!! I would have been going out of my mind and probably not making any sense had this (God Forbid!!!) be one of my grandchildren!!! I don't believe a WORD she says!

You're right, she just does not sound upset. Plus she's talking to other people or kids during part of the phone call. I'm assuming that it was the Mom's Mother who walked up and sounded more upset than Mom did.

There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that this child is dead at the hands of her mother. I believe the childs crys to her former guardians to take her home that day from a family event and the fact she wasnt in school for a week are pretty conclusive. The people who handed these children back to her after she was in prison for torture and child abuse ought to go to jail with her. Torture - and they gave her back the child she tortured - how would that make a child feel? Safe?
Secure? What the hell is the matter with these social workers.

Jerice Hunter, whose 5-year-old daughter Jhessye Shockley has been missing for more than a month, sat down Wednesday night in her first one-on-one interview since her daughter's disappearance.

"My children are my life and anybody who knows that, who knows me, knows that," Hunter said. "Not only am I sending a desperate plea out for Jhessey Shockley's safe return, I'd like to also make a plea for my other children because they are people. They're human beings all of them and they need their mom," Hunter said.

Why in the world didnt this interviewer ask her why the child was not in school for a week?

Yes artgal so many of these stories are shades of KC. I see it and I believe others see that as well. The whole world watched as KC got away with killing her own daughter and disposing her as trash. I knew that would be a bad example to other young parents that don't want the responsibly of a child anymore.

Jhessye Shockley Missing: Mother Says She Pleaded to Take Lie Detector Test

The mother of 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley, who has been missing from her Glendale Ariz. home for almost a month, said she pleaded with police to give her a lie detector test, to prove that she has not been involved in her daughter’s disappearance.

In an Interview with Phoenix KPHO TV, Jerice Hunter said the police held off administering the lie detector test until after the expected mother had given birth to her baby.

"That same detective contacted me a few days ago and said Jerice, you've had the baby, are you ready to take the polygraph? I said, 'OK sure, but I'd like my attorney to be present.' What's wrong with that?" Hunter asked.

Hunter has been under a cloud of suspicion since her 5-year-old daughter Jhessey disappeared.

When did she get out of prison? If recently, she only served 5 years.

More importantly who made the decision to give her back her tortured children?
