Authorities in Oklahoma have finally made an arrest in the homicides of Taylor Paschal-Placker and Skyla Jade Whitaker -- two girls gunned down in in 2008 while walking along a remote Weleetka road.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation announced the arrest of 25-year-old Kevin Sweat, a resident of Henryetta, during a press conference late this afternoon. Already behind bars for the July slaying of his fiancee, Ashley Taylor, now Sweat has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the girls' deaths.

"We were always hopeful that we would come to this point where charges were filed, although at times we had our doubts," said Okfuskee County District Attorney Max Cook.

Cook said he will be seeking the death penalty for Sweat. The suspect is being held without bail at the Seminole County Jail.

The bodies of Taylor and Skyla were found on June 8, 2008, in a ditch along County Line Road in Weleetka.

Skyla had been spending the night at Taylor Paschal-Placker's house, and the two had decided to take a walk along the dirt road, the Okfuskee County Sheriff's Office said.

When the girls failed to return home, Taylor's grandfather, Peter Placker, went looking for them. He walked roughly a quarter of a mile down the road before discovering the girls' bodies.

According to autopsy reports, Skyla had been shot a total of eight times in the neck, arms, shoulders, chest and abdomen. Taylor had been shot five times in the face, groin and hand.

The county coroner found no signs of sexual assault, but he did find that each of the girls had been shot with two different caliber bullets.

Authorities have identified one of two weapons used in the murder as a .40 Glock model 22. According to OSBI Director Stan Florence, investigators know the weapon, which has serial number EKG463US, was owned by Sweat and was "used in these murders." Investigators believe Sweat sold the handgun at a gun show in Tulsa in March. The OSBI is offering up to a $5,000 reward for that firearm.

Florence said investigators began to focus on Sweat this summer when they were investigating the murder of 23-year-old Ashley Taylor.

"It was during the course of that investigation that information helped us understand and realize that Mr. Sweat may have been involved in the murders of Taylor Paschal-Placker and Skyla Jade Whitaker," Florence said.

Ashley Taylor's charred remains were found on a farm belonging to Sweat's father, Pat, on Aug. 4. Taylor and Sweat had reportedly been dating for three years. According to an arrest affidavit, Sweat confessed to cutting Ashley Taylor's throat on July 17. Sweat also made reference to the Weleetka homicides.

"Sweat said that on June 8, 2008, during the afternoon, he was driving ... in Okfuskee County, Okla. Sweat pulled over on the side of the road and saw 'two monsters' come at him. Sweat then 'panicked.' Sweat grabbed his Glock .40 caliber handgun from between the seats of his car. Sweat then 'shot the monsters' with the Glock handgun. Sweat then grabbed a '.22 caliber' gun from his glove box and 'shot the monsters' with the .22 caliber gun. Sweat then got into his car and left," the arrest affidavit reports.

Florence said investigators are still trying to establish a motive in all three homicides. He added that investigators are not looking for any other suspects.

In regard to the victims' family members, Florence said, "They're relieved but they also know it's still not over."

Post by NiteSpinR Mon May 27, 2013 3:05 am

Apr 11, 2013

A man who is accused of killing two Weleetka girls in 2008 will soon face trial in Creek County on charges that he murdered his former bride-to-be.

An Okfuskee County judge ordered the first of two murder trials pending against Kevin Sweat moved to Creek County, court records filed Tuesday show.

The order by District Judge Lawrence Parish states that he moved the trial from Okemah to Creek County's Bristow courthouse because of intense pretrial publicity and Okfuskee County's population of slightly more than 12,000 people, only half of whom might be eligible to serve on the jury.

Creek County, with a population of nearly 70,000 people, would have a potential jury pool five times larger, ensuring that Sweat would have a chance of receiving a fair trial, Parish wrote.

The trial is scheduled to begin June 10.

Sweat, 27, was charged in 2011 with first-degree murder in the death of his former fiancée. Ashley Taylor disappeared in July of that year when the two were supposed to travel to Louisiana to get married.

He also faces trial on first-degree murder charges in the slayings of Skyla Whitaker, 11, and Taylor Paschal-Placker, 13, who were slain outside Weleetka in June 2008. The girls' killings shocked the rural community and received national media attention.

At a March 28 arraignment in Okfuskee County, attorneys entered a plea of not guilty on Sweat's behalf in the girls' killings. No change of venue has been ordered in the Weleetka girls' deaths.

Defense attorney Peter Astor had argued that the two murder trials his client faces are "intertwined" and that intense media coverage of the Weleetka girls' killings had unfairly prejudiced potential jurors in Okfuskee County.

Although the trials are separate, "in a way, they're going to be tied together" because of evidence prosecutors plan to use that appears to link the killings, Astor told the Tulsa World in March.

Changes of venue are rare in Oklahoma but are allowed upon a judge's finding that "the minds of the inhabitants of the county ... are so prejudiced against the defendant that a fair and impartial trial cannot be had," according to state law.

Post by NiteSpinR Fri Aug 09, 2013 1:54 pm

Kevin Sweat will not have to go through two separate trials to determine if he is guilty of murder.
Okfuskee County judge Lawrence Parish ruled Wednesday Sweat, 27, will have one trial for the shooting deaths of Taylor Packer and Skyla Whitaker in 2008 and the 2011 death of Ashley Taylor.

Originally he was going to be facing separate trials but his attorneys wanted them combined because evidence from the Weleetka girls' case would be used in his trial on Taylor's death.

The trial is scheduled to start Jan. 27, 2014 in Bristow. Sweat was arrested in December, 2011 after OSBI forensics allegedly linked shell casings found at the scene of the murders of Placker and Taylor with those said to be connected in the death of Taylor.

Her burned remains were found after several days of searching by law enforcement personnel.

The gun that fired the casings, a .44 caliber Glock, has never been found. It is believed to have been sold at a gun show in Tulsa.

Post by NiteSpinR Wed Jan 29, 2014 11:12 pm

January 29, 2014

OKEMAH, Oklahoma — More psychological testing has been ordered for an Oklahoma man accused of killing two girls in Weleetka and his fiancee.

Kevin Sweat is charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the 2008 deaths of 11-year-old Skyla Whitaker and 13-year-old Taylor Paschal-Placker. He faces a third charge of first-degree murder for the 2011 death of his fiancee, Ashley Taylor.

At a hearing Tuesday, a psychologist for the defense testified that Sweat couldn't give a "knowing and intelligent" waiver of his Miranda rights when he was interviewed by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

The hearing is to determine whether the videotaped interview can be shown during Sweat's trial later this year. The Tulsa World reports the hearing will continue March 26 after a psychologist for the state examines Sweat.

WELEETKA, OK -- A judge is considering whether the man charged in the deaths of 3 people was mentally competent.

Tuesday, a judge said he would issue a written ruling on Kevin Sweat's competency.

Defense attorneys argue that Sweat was mentally incompetent when he waived his right to remain silent and confessed to the crimes.

He is charged with first-degree murder for the 2008 deaths of 11-year-old Skyla Whitaker and 13-year-old Taylor Placker and the 2011 death of his fiancee, Ashley Taylor.

Kevin Sweat Charged With Killing Taylor Paschal-Placker And Skyla Jade Whitaker. Found Guilty July 31, 2014. Sentenced to LWOP. Empty Sentencing rescheduled, Kevin Sweat reportedly wants to withdraw guilty plea./Kevin Sweat wants to withdraw his blind guilty plea, according to a media report.

By CARY ASPINWALL World Staff Writer

The sentencing for convicted killer Kevin Sweat has been delayed one week, while Sweat reportedly told an Oklahoma City reporter he wants to withdraw his guilty plea.

Sweat was found guilty July 31 of murder in the 2008 deaths of Skyla Whitaker and Taylor Paschal-Placker and the 2011 killing of Ashley Taylor. He was scheduled to be sentenced Friday — but this week, that hearing was continued to Oct. 24.

A few days before Sweat’s murder trial was set to begin in August, he opted to enter a blind guilty plea on all three counts of murder against him in exchange for a chance to talk to the FBI. A presentence investigation found Sweat showed “little to no” remorse for killing Taylor, his fiancee, and denied “any involvement” in the deaths of the two young Weleetka girls.

But according to reports from Oklahoma City’s FOX 25 news station, Sweat called a reporter at the station from his jail cell and told him that he plans to withdraw his guilty plea because “he believed the FBI agents did not take his information seriously enough.”

According to Fox 25, Sweat told the reporter that he had filled out the paperwork to withdraw his guilty plea, but it hadn’t been filed at the courthouse because his attorneys hadn’t yet picked it up. Court records do not show any documents filed indicating Sweat’s desire to withdraw his plea.

Wayne Woodyard, one of Sweat’s defense attorneys, said he couldn’t comment on Sweat’s decision due to attorney-client privilege but said he’d “heard something about it.”

Woodyard said Sweat legally must be sentenced before he can file motions regarding his plea, but “there’s a process in place” for that option.

An Okfuskee County District Attorney’s Office employee said District Judge Lawrence Parish will make the decision on whether Sweat could be allowed to withdraw his plea. Typically in a blind plea, the accused does not know the punishment the judge will hand out and is throwing himself on the mercy of the court.
Without a trial resulting in a unanimous jury verdict, under Oklahoma law, he can only be sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole or life without parole.

Before convicting Sweat in July, Parish read through each of the charges and asked Sweat whether he fully understood that he was giving up his constitutional right to a trial. Sweat told the judge he understood, and he signed a written guilty plea admitting that testimony he gave the OSBI, along with statements by witnesses and evidence collected by the state, proved his guilt.

His guilty plea would spare the state what was expected to be a lengthy trial, even after he had waived his right to have a jury hear the case.

The presentence investigation report filed in September recommended incarceration for Sweat, based on his “persistent pattern of criminal and violent behavior.”

When Sweat was asked by a DOC investigator about the death of Taylor, 23, he told the officer his former fiancee had a history of “mental health issues” and that she became upset when she learned they weren’t going to be married.

Taylor disappeared in 2011 when she and Sweat were supposed to be headed to Louisiana to get married. Her family became suspicious after not hearing from her for several weeks and confronted Sweat after finding out he’d never left the state.

In the version of events Sweat told a DOC investigator last month, Taylor “went for a gun that was in his vehicle, pointed it at him, and then a struggle ensued.”

“He stated that’s when the gun went off, but he was unsure of who pulled the trigger,” the report states.
Sweat previously told police Taylor disappeared after getting out of the car during a fight and that he cut her throat and pushed her into a lake. But months after she disappeared, investigators found Taylor’s bone fragments and pieces of her belongings in a burn pile on property owned by Sweat’s father.
“When asked how Ashley’s remains were found in the burn pile on his father’s property, the defendant claimed he didn’t know how she came to be in the burn pile,” according to the report. He suggested that he may have “blacked out” and that he thought the shooting was either accidental or suicide.

Sweat denied any involvement in the slayings of Whitaker, 11, and Paschal-Placker, 13, according to the report. He told the investigator all he knew about it was that he saw an ambulance in the area near his grandparents’ house on the day the girls died. Whitaker and Paschal-Placker were found gunned down by the side of a county road outside Weleetka on June 8, 2008.

The girls’ murders remained unsolved until after Taylor went missing and Sweat reportedly made incriminating statements to her family when confronted about her disappearance.

Sweat didn’t offer any explanation for how the OSBI found bullet casings on his father’s property that matched the gun used to kill the girls in 2008. The gun that matched those casings was the same Glock .40-caliber that a police officer reported selling to Sweat after meeting him in the McDonald’s drive-through where he worked.

Sweat also reportedly confessed to killing Taylor on an OSBI interrogation video that would have been shown at trial — it was originally sealed at pretrial hearings and has never been viewed by the public. According to the OSBI, Sweat said his former fiancee had threatened to tell people Sweat killed “those girls” if he broke up with her.

That video was to be shown at trial, along with one where Sweat said he shot at “two monsters” while driving in the country, something he said when he was questioned by police in the girls’ deaths.
Prosecutors had alleged in court filings that Sweat’s motive in killing the young girls was reportedly revenge for the 2007 drug overdose death of his brother, to whom one of Paschal-Placker’s relatives had allegedly sold drugs.

Kevin Sweat Charged With Killing Taylor Paschal-Placker And Skyla Jade Whitaker. Found Guilty July 31, 2014. Sentenced to LWOP. 29678270
OKEMAH, Okla. —An Oklahoma man accused of fatally shooting two young girls, then killing his fiancee three years later, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Kevin Sweat was sentenced Friday to three life sentences. He pleaded guilty in the 2008 deaths of 11-year-old Skyla Whitaker and 13-year-old Taylor Paschal-Placker, whose deaths went unsolved until he was arrested in the 2011 killing of his fiancee, Ashley Taylor.

Sweat's sentencing was delayed after a commotion that occurred as he was being brought to the courtroom. District Attorney Max Cook has released little information, but he says Sweat remained in custody the entire time.

Sweat pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder earlier this year, in exchange for prosecutors agreeing to drop the death penalty.
