Neti Pot Deaths Linked to Brain-Eating Amoeba in Tap Water
By The Associated Press
Fri, Dec 16, 2011
Louisiana health regulators warned residents Tuesday about the dangers of using neti pots improperly. A neti pot, which looks like a genie's lamp, is commonly used to irrigate sinuses. The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals issued its warning following a second death this year caused by Naegleria fowleri, the so-called brain-eating amoeba.
A 51-year-old DeSoto Parish woman died after using tap water in a neti pot to irrigate her sinuses and became infected by the deadly amoeba, which entered the body through her nose. In June, a 20-year-old St. Bernard Parish man died under the same circumstances.
Safe Neti Pot Use
"If you are irrigating, flushing, or rinsing your sinuses, for example, by using a neti pot, use distilled, sterile or previously boiled water to make up the irrigation solution," said Louisiana State Epidemiologist, Dr. Raoult Ratard. "Tap water is safe for drinking, but not for irrigating your nose."
It's also important to rinse the irrigation device after each use and leave open to air dry, he said.
The very rare infection typically occurs when people go swimming or diving in warm freshwater lakes and rivers. In very rare instances, health experts said such infections may also occur when contaminated water from other sources, such as inadequately chlorinated swimming pool water or heated tap water less than 116.6 degrees, enters the nose when people submerge their heads or when people irrigate their sinuses with devices such as a neti pot.
Be Wary of Symptoms
DHH said the amoeba causes the disease primary amebic meningoencephalitis, a brain infection that leads to the destruction of brain tissue. In its early stages, symptoms may be similar to symptoms of bacterial meningitis and can include headache, fever, nausea, vomiting and stiff neck. Later symptoms include confusion, loss of balance, seizures and hallucinations.
After the start of symptoms, the disease progresses rapidly and usually causes death within one to 12 days.

This is very important as every doctor I've ever seen says the neti pot is the natural way to relieve sinus pressure. I've used mine many times and it immediately helps, but I have wondered about using tap water..have used it though but rinse out the pot with hot water before and after.
No more tap water!!!! Take heed!!

Thanks for this Wrap! I use a neti pot occasionally and boiled the water the first couple times......then just started using hot tap water. I won't do that anymore!

BJ, IIRC, you turned me on to the neti pot and it's been a God-send. Have since turned it on to many who agree.
But no more tap water..that's for sure!!

I did tell you about the neti pot.....and the bed buddy! LOL
The directions say to use boiled or distilled water, but I didn't realize how important it was.

Re: Neti Pot Deaths Linked to Brain-Eating Amoeba in Tap Water
I think I would use distilled and just heat it up a bit in the microwave.
Of course our water supply is different in each State and IDK, but it might be really bad in Louisiana.

Here's what it looks like.Slys Hunny wrote:ok what is the bed buddy?
I microwave mine for 2 minutes and 20 seconds and put in in my bed so I don't have to climb into between cold sheets.

Re: Neti Pot Deaths Linked to Brain-Eating Amoeba in Tap Water
It helps my back. You can put it in the freezer, too. I have ones similar to this..that my friend who is a massage therapist gave me.
The kids have what they call the "ice packs" in their freezer. Noah has a habit, when he doesn't get his way, to say, "I need an ice pack. I have a headache." So, of course Quinn then needs one, too. He mimics Noah. So, then the two are walking around the house holding ice packs on their forehead.

You have hot bricks in your bed? I am sorry, but I am assuming these bricks are in lieu of an electric blanket? Might I inquire Where specifically the hot bricks are placed and How hot they are? Wouldn't they burn your sheets? How big are the bricks?? I have Never heard of this. What if you roll over on one of them????? Hope you have a king sized bed!

I have not used the neti pot, but I would use the distilled water AND I would use White Vinegar in it every week or two.
I have Sleep Apnea and I use the CPAP with a Humidifier, so the instructions were for Distilled Water and then to use the White Vinegar diluted with water. I probably dilute it half and half. I just let it soak for a while before I dump it. I wash it with soap afterwards and let it dry. I do buy the cans of saline (salt water) nasal spray and was thinking of trying the neti pot. Now I am not sure if I want to try the Neti Pot or not.
I have never heard of the bed buddy. I love my flannel sheets in the winter. I have to be warm to go to sleep.
Sly, I cannot imagine going to bed with a hot brick. I am like Wrap, how do you do that.

Re: Neti Pot Deaths Linked to Brain-Eating Amoeba in Tap Water
The Neti pot, if used correctly, is a life saver for anyone with allergies or a cold. I was scared of it the first time but not any more. It's instant relief and doctors swear by it.
My DIL Refuses to use it..says it looks "too gross", but my son who has a lot of allergies, uses it and loves it.
I must tell him to use distilled water. They have Ozarka delivered to their home and have both the hot and cold dispenser with the child proof thingy's on them but I still think distilled is the way to go.

Re: Neti Pot Deaths Linked to Brain-Eating Amoeba in Tap Water
That's why we live in Texas, even though it's chilly here in Corpus..by chilly, I mean it's in the 50's.
I would rather sweat my rear off than be cold. Am like a dog. If my nose gets cold, I get chilled to the bone and cannot warm up,, so I sleep with the sheet over my nose to stay warm.
Oh, wanted to add since everyone is getting sick. Put Vicks on your feet both top and bottom and put on socks. Is Wonderful for colds. And use a humidifier because the heater will dry up your skin and make you feel yukky when you wake up.

Re: Neti Pot Deaths Linked to Brain-Eating Amoeba in Tap Water
What's better than flannel sheets is fleece sheets. They stay soft, don't pill......I bought them for all my kids and grandkids for Christmas a couple years ago. They're made out of some sort of micro-fiber.
Fleece sheets are widely available, in stores such as Kohl's, Wal-Mart and Bed Bath and Beyond. You can also find them online at stores such as Overstock.com and Fleecies.com.
You can also make your own bed buddy with rice in a long stocking. Just tie the end.

Re: Neti Pot Deaths Linked to Brain-Eating Amoeba in Tap Water
Fleece Sheets, I have not heard of them. Guess I need to get out more.
I will have to make a "bed buddy", in all sizes. Sounds wonderful.

They are only about 10 bucks at the store. Bed Buddy that is. Not sure how much the fleece sheets are.
Re: Neti Pot Deaths Linked to Brain-Eating Amoeba in Tap Water
I will have to check both of them out. I really have not been out shopping for myself in a while, so I don't even know what is out there anymore.

Re: Neti Pot Deaths Linked to Brain-Eating Amoeba in Tap Water
They are just your regular red bricks i line the bed with them to warm the sheets then we put them at the bottom of the bed by our feet. I sometimes wrap one in a towel and put it near my back if its aching. They dont burn the sheets at all.I dont know exactly how hot the get but pretty hot. Space heaters and electric blankets scare me. My grandma always put hot bricks in our beds when we were kids. Its wonderful and by the time the bricks cool off the bed is nice and toasty. I also usually have one or two on the floor under my desk to put my feet on to keep them warm.

Re: Neti Pot Deaths Linked to Brain-Eating Amoeba in Tap Water
Interesting. I would be worried I would role over on one. But, if you have done this since a child, you are used to it.
I never grew up in cold weather. Raised in SanAntonio, raised kids in Albuquerque (yea, it gets cold there but not severely), moved to California, then Florida so..I cannot deal with COLD!!!
