In what appears to be a Christmas miracle, a five-hour old baby girl abandoned in a cardboard box on a Philadelphia sidewalk was discovered and rescued after almost being mistaken for trash.

Today, the baby dubbed "Baby Noel" by police and nurses is in stable condition at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, but her identity remains a mystery.

"She's in really good condition. We're very fortunate with the timing, weather and the church finding the baby," Philadelphia Police spokesman Ray Evers told ABCNews.com. "We had a lot of things that fell into place. If it was any closer, the baby would have been thrown out with the trash. It was scary close."

Police are asking for the public's help in searching for the mother. The infant was found in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood, and they have had no leads on who she may belong to.

"We don't have anything solid yet," Evers said. "We're looking for anyone that knew of a woman that was pregnant in the neighborhood and isn't anymore to give us a call."
The infant was found on Wednesday in a cardboard box in front of a church. The box was dangerously close to a pile of trash bags and a telephone pole.

Homer Keller, an employee of the church, was outside cleaning up when he spotted the box. He was prepared to throw it out with the rest of the garbage, when a sound caught his attention.

"I heard a little sound like a baby or kitten or something," Keller told ABC News' Philadelphia affiliate WPVI. "I thought it was a kitten, and then I pulled over the cover back off of it, and it was a baby."

The baby was "wrapped in a red and white hounds-tooth patterned blanket, an adult-sized brown women's sweater, black bathrobe with polka dots and a large peach colored towel," according to police.

Keller called 911 and waited for paramedics to arrive. The little girl was rushed to the hospital, where doctors determined she was miraculously uninjured and in good condition, even though she was only a few hours old and weighed only 5.5 pounds.

"I'm not a math guy, but the probability of everything falling into place [like it did] is very, very low," Evers said.

The Philadelphia Department of Human Services said that the baby will be in the hospital for "several more days."

The baby has pulled on heart-strings all over the country, with calls flooding in from across the nation with inquiries about adopting Baby Noel and donating money.

"We already have families who have been screened and foster families who want to adopt," Philadelphia Department of Human Services spokeswoman Alicia Taylor told ABCNews.com. "People calling today will not be able to get this baby, but we have a lot of other children who also need families."

Taylor said that if the baby's relatives are located, re-unification is always the priority. She said that even if the mother left the child, there are often cases where other relatives did not even know about the baby and might want to take her in.

Otherwise, Baby Noel will be placed in a foster home.

Authorities also want the public to know that there are proper ways for people in difficult situations to hand their children over if they cannot care for them. Philadelphia has Safe Haven laws that allow for children to be dropped off at places such as hospitals and fire departments.

For now, the man who found Baby Noel is just happy that he was in the right place at the right time.

"I don't want to judge anybody," Keller said. "I'm just glad the little girl is alive."

"Taylor said that if the baby's relatives are located, re-unification is always the priority." -----> from above.
IF they find that egg donor they need to charge her up the you know what for leaving that tiny baby on a cold Philly street, NOT give the baby back to her!!
It really is a Christmas Miracle - the chain of events that led to her being found instead of being thrown out with the trash! OMG.

Cops issue warrant for mom who abandoned baby in box

Police are looking for Patricia "Dina" Crawley, 33, who they say abandoned her baby girl on a North Philadelphia street in December.

A mother who police say abandoned her hours-old baby girl in a cardboard box on a North Philadelphia street in December is now facing attempted murder charges, police announced Wednesday.

Cops issued an arrest warrant for Patricia “Dina” Crawley, 33, who they say has been linked via DNA evidence to the infant, who was found by residents during a street cleanup on 27th Street near Cumberland around 10 a.m. Dec. 21. Police said Crawley, who also goes by the alias Alisha Bogan, has an address on Gillingham Street near Tackawanna in Frankford and frequents the area near 26th Street and Lehigh Avenue, not far from where the newborn was found.

Crawley is described as black, 5 feet 5 and 160 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Capt. John Darby of the Special Victims Unit said after receiving tips leading them to about 10 women, police brought Crawley in for questioning Jan. 4.

At that time, Darby said, Crawley denied any relationship to the baby girl. Police did not have enough evidence to arrest her then, but were able to take the DNA sample that was eventually matched to the baby.

“We had her under our roof in here. There was an opportunity at that particular time to kind of straighten this out, to take possession of that baby and let us know,” Darby said. “That didn’t happen. Ultimately, and thankfully, we had the benefit of the science that did that for us.”

DNA evidence showed that “she’s 138.9 million times more likely to be the mother of that baby than if we just picked a random woman off the street,” said Joseph Szarka, the lab manager from the police department’s Forensic Sciences Bureau.

That match, coupled with information on the baby’s grave condition provided to police by doctors who cared for her at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children’s neo-natal intensive care unit, was enough for the District Attorney’s office to approve an attempted-murder charge in the case, Darby said.

“As part of the charging process, doctors were consulted multiple times and in fact this baby was very much in danger of dying out there, just before Christmas, in a box left on the street in cold temperatures. It doesn’t get any worse than that,” he said.

He said Crawley has at least one other child that police know of. Court records show that she has been arrested before on charges including assault and retail theft.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Crawley also faces charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child and simple assault.

The baby was released from St. Christopher’s after spending 10 days in the NICU, Darby said, and is currently in foster care.

“It’s disturbing, to say the least. It’s troubling,” Darby said. “You’ve got a baby left out there on the highway.”

A Christmas Miracle ~ Baby Noel - "Mother", Patricia "Dina" Crawley, 33, Has Been Found and has been Arrested!! Empty Re: A Christmas Miracle ~ Baby Noel - "Mother", Patricia "Dina" Crawley, 33, Has Been Found and has been Arrested!!

The mother of a baby girl found alive in a box on a cold December day last year in Philadelphia is in police custody and will be charged with attempted murder.

Police issued an arrest warrant last week for Patricia "Dina" Crawley, 33.

Crawley is accused of leaving her newborn baby girl outside the Rainbow Daycare on 27th and Huntingdon Streets. The infant was wrapped in a blanket and robe.

She was discovered on Dec. 21, 2011 by two men cleaning the streets. One of them picked up the cardboard box to place it near a trash pile and that's when he heard the baby start to cry, police said.

The baby was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital where she was named Baby Noel by hospital workers. When the case was first reported, there was an outpouring of support from people asking to adopt Baby Noel and to make donations. Right now she is in foster care.

Philadelphia police said they determined Crawley was Baby Noel's mother through DNA testing. She was one of many women brought in for questioning in January, police said. They took a mouth swab from her at the time and found out last Monday that it was a match.

"Everybody around here remembers her being pregnant and then she disappeared for awhile," said Abdullah Sabor, who says Crawley has been a casual acquaintance for six years. "Then she came back and her belly was gone."

Investigators say Crawley has had drug-related run-ins with police. Police sources also say she's the mother of two children, ages 10 and 14, who live with their father.

"If she didn't want the baby all she could've done was take it to the hospital," said Shonda Debnam, Crawley's neighbor. "That's all she had to do. She didn't have to put the baby in the box. The baby wasn't asked to be brought here."

Police say Crawley will be charged with Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault and related charges.

A Christmas Miracle ~ Baby Noel - "Mother", Patricia "Dina" Crawley, 33, Has Been Found and has been Arrested!! Empty UPDATE: Crawley Sentenced To 1 Year In An In-Patient Rehabilitation Center

Post by NiteSpinR Tue May 28, 2013 7:59 pm

December 20, 2012

A Philadelphia woman has just been sentenced for leaving her baby on the streets in a cardboard box just before Christmas last year.

34-year-old Patricia "Dina" Crawley admitted to dumping her baby in a box on a street corner in North Philadelphia just four days before Christmas. A year later, she got an early Christmas gift from the judge.

It was one year ago today that Crawley left her newborn daughter in a box outside a daycare center. The baby was wrapped in blankets inside the box, which sat there for fourteen hours, through the night, until it was discovered by a handyman the next morning.

The man was sweeping up when he heard the baby crying. He then found her in the box.

The infant was nursed back to health at the hospital, where she was named "Baby Noel".

Crawley was found months later, and admitted to police that she had been high on crack at the time and panicked when she gave birth. She said she hoped someone would find the baby.

The prosecutor argued that Crawley was only thinking of herself, and that it wasn't about finding a safe harbor for the baby it was about getting rid of the baby.

The judge disagreed during her sentencing Thursday morning. She said she has seen a lot worse done by mothers who were high at the time and said there was something inside Crawley that said 'I'm at least going to do the best I can.'

At the time, Crawley had an admitted $300 a day crack addiction. She was selling herself to pay for the drugs. The judge took her severe addiction into consideration during sentencing today.

The prosecution asked for two and half to five years in jail. Instead, the judge said there is some hope for Crawley being rehabilitated, so she sentenced her to about a year in an in-patient rehabilitation center. If Crawley violates any terms of her sentence, the judge says she will definitely throw her in jail then.
