Prosecuting Casey Anthony - Elizabeth Mitchell Rob Lowe Trailer Empty Rob Lowe: 'I was shocked' at Casey Anthony verdict

Lowe: 'Sometimes in Hollywood, there is not a happy ending. This is one of those times'
Lowe stars as prosecutor Jeff Ashton in the Lifetime movie, 'Prosecuting Casey Anthony'

Actor Rob Lowe says that while filming his latest movie, "Prosecuting Casey Anthony," about the young Florida mother who was put on trial for the murder of her 2-year-old daughter, he became convinced that she had killed little Caylee.

In an interview with Showbiz Tonight's A.J. Hammer, Lowe, who stars as prosecutor Jeff Ashton in the Lifetime movie, says that he, along with most of the country, couldn't believe when Anthony was acquitted during her 2011 trial.

"I was shocked by the verdict," reveals Lowe, who says he had followed the news coverage religiously and couldn't believe what he was seeing.

The Golden Globe and Emmy-nominee says that playing Ashton, who was "12 for 12 in death penalty cases," and presented what he thought was overwhelming evidence of the crime, convinced him that the verdict had been a mistake: "How does that happen and how do you ever reconcile yourself?"

In July 2011, a jury acquitted Anthony of all the charges related to her child's death, but convicted her on four counts of lying to law enforcement. She was sentenced to four years. With credit for time served before and during her trial, she was released from jail on July 17, 2011.

When asked about what he learned while shooting the movie, Lowe, who also spent a considerable amount of time with Ashton himself, says he realized how out of control the trial had gotten: "This was a circus, and I think Jeff is a gentleman of court. He comes from an era where certain things are done and certain things are not done in court."

Lowe continued, saying that Anthony's primary defense lawyer was the exact opposite: "I think Jose Baez is the type of lawyer who just goes for it and the jury believed Jose."

He also says that the trial, the first major one in the age of Twitter and Facebook, might have been impacted by social media. "I think that had a lot to do with the outcome. I think the country communicated immediately in a way that was not being communicated in the courtroom and the two never, ever intersected."

When asked what he would like Anthony to take away from this film, Lowe says that while he's "never been able to understand her," he hopes that she takes away this lesson: "We all have consequences to our actions, although there are certain people who like to pretend otherwise. "

"There's a little girl who we must not forget who is at the heart of this, who is lost," continued Lowe. "Sometimes in Hollywood, there is not a happy ending. This is one of those times."

"Prosecuting Casey Anthony" premieres Saturday, January 19 on Lifetime.

I doubt I'll watch it but who knows, depends on my mood when it comes on. I like Rob Lowe's take on this, I think he's quite a bit on the dime!

Prosecuting Casey Anthony - Elizabeth Mitchell Rob Lowe Trailer Empty Prosecuting Casey Anthony Gives a Glimpse of How the Case Was Lost

Post by Wrapitup Sat Jan 19, 2013 6:03 pm

Enough time has passed since Casey Anthony was acquitted of the murder of her daughter Caylee that audiences can now expect to be offered books, movies, TV shows, etc. of the story behind the story. One of the first out of the gate is Lifetime's original movie Prosecuting Casey Anthony. This movie is based on prosecuting attorney Jeff Ashton's book Imperfect Justice: Prosecuting Casey Anthony that he co-wrote with Lisa Pulitzer. The film stars Rob Lowe as Ashton and is a largely dispassionate account of the trial and the prosecutor's theories for securing a conviction.

The prosecuting team is composed of Ashton, Linda Burdick (Elizabeth Mitchell) and Frank George (David Richmond-Peck). Burdick is lead chair but Ashton seemingly calls the shots. He has taken on this case that virtually can't be lost as the close out to his career. He also has a deep need inside himself to see Casey Anthony (Virginia Welch) convicted.

The movie, to its credit, does not project a very flattering image of Ashton. He seems to think the case is unlosable particularly because Casey is being represented by untested attorney Jose Baez (Oscar Nunez). Ashton has nothing but disdain for Baez and is totally condescending towards him in court. Even when Baez shows he has a few tricks up his sleeve, Ashton refuses to take him as a serious threat.

Ashton's overconfidence also shows up in his courtroom demeanor. He smirks, even laughs out loud at some of Baez's statements and questions. He is constantly being cautioned by Linda not to appear smug and arrogant. In the film the jurors pick up on these actions and attitudes and their reaction to Ashton might have led to their failure to convict.

Lowe does a good job of painting all of these facets of Ashton's personality. He exudes over confidence in his being and attitudes. He knows he is a good and successful prosecutor and thinks his record shows that he cannot lose such an open and shut case.

Opposite him Nunez is masterful in his portrayal of Baez. He shows his aggressiveness, his commitment, and his intelligence. Little was expected of Baez in court but much was delivered, at least in this movie portrayal. He appears to be just as confident of an acquittal as Ashton is confident of a conviction.

Kevin Dunn has some good moments as George Anthony, Casey's father. He gives a glimpse of some of the complexities involved in the man's character. As Casey, Welch has little to do but look like the notorious woman and mimic her courtroom behavior.

The film never gets into the hearts and souls of these characters. It only presents an outsider's observation of what was going on behind the scenes in the creation and presentation of the prosecution's case. Since the movie is based on Ashton's book you would expect a more detailed look at what was really going on in the mind of the man who was leading the charge.

Even with its flaws this is an engrossing look at the man who lost the case that couldn't be lost. The public was fascinated with the Casey Anthony trial and many of them should show up for this first look behind the scenes.

Prosecuting Casey Anthony. airs Saturday, January 19 at 8PM EST on Lifetime.

Just finished watching it. It had it's good moments but unless one followed this case, it was confusing as they jumped around a lot. They didn't show Dr. G on the stand which I thought was the most pivotal testimony.

On another subject, I had a very interesting conversation w/my friend who bartends at the Mexican restaurant across the street from Ocean Woods where reports have been made that she resides there. My friend told me that he has talked to many people who live at Ocean Woods who have told him that she DOES live there..that she has been seen several times walking her dog..a dachshund. She allegedly lives all the way back close to the ocean in a corner lot.

Then, he told me about a week ago, a woman came into his work with a beach hat and sunglasses w/dark hair..someone he had never seen before (this is a local hangout like "Cheers"). He told me that it was in the afternoon and it wasn't crowded. She sat alone at a table and asked for Taco's and a coke. He said he had a brief conversation w/her and she told him her name is "Elizabeth" and that she had moved to Cape Canaveral from Orlando. She had her dog (a dachshund) w/her and had it tied up outside. He told me he is pretty sure this was her. I told him, "pretty sure? Are you kidding me?" He said that he didn't follow the case that well (he isn't one to follow the news unless its sports) but she looked like her and when she left, she walked across the street w/her dog to Ocean Woods. Oh, she also told him that the taco's were very good and that she loves Mexican food.

Now, I have no way of knowing if this was her or even if she is in fact living there but just thought I'd pass this along.

I told him I wish I had been there because I would have known in a heartbeat if it were her. shocked3 ha ha

That is very interesting about what your friend encountered. Too bad he didn't follow the case more, he would have known for sure if that was her.
I just bet the 'finger' lawyer is paying her rent and keeping her out of public. I think he'll be stuck w/ her forever which is fine with me, they deserve each other.

I just watched the movie. I agree Wrap, if one doesn't know the case the way we do it would jump around way too much. I'd say the movie was fair at best. It did get me angry all over again at Bozo, TLMS and that damn jury! I do still think it shouldn't have been a death penalty case just because of the jury. I also wonder if the prosecutors was just too sure of themselves. Not that I blame them, I sure don't, I blame that jury and Bozo just had incredible luck. I'll still stick with my karma theory and I was surprised that as you said, that was said at the end of the movie!

I agree w/all you said. One more thing. The character who played Linda Drane Burdick was all wrong IMHO. Linda was a straight shooter, no bs. The actor who portrayed her almost acted like she wanted to jump Jeff Ashton's (Rob Lowe's) bones. Also, JA's wife looked as young as CA. I was impressed w/Bozo's character because his pronunciation was spot on.

Prosecuting Casey Anthony - Elizabeth Mitchell Rob Lowe Trailer Empty Jose Baez talks about Casey Anthony movie, life after trial. Baez: Movie didn't live up to real-life drama

Post by Wrapitup Wed Jan 23, 2013 7:59 pm

UPDATED 6:32 PM EST Jan 23, 2013

Jose Baez has come a long way since before he represented Casey Anthony in her criminal trial.

Casey Anthony's lawyer Jose Baez sat down with WESH 2's Amanda Ober on Wednesday to talk about life after the trial, the Casey Anthony movie on Lifetime and representing victims of the Aurora, Colo., shooting.

MORE
"I'm definitely a lot more recognizable. I realize that," he told WESH 2's Amanda Ober in an interview Wednesday.

Baez just merged his law firm with Trial Pro, a firm founded by Piercy Stakelum, who's widely known from his television commercials. And, they Suck and are known as idiots in and around Orlando.

Baez says he'll soon appear in commercials. umno Dollar Signs eyerolling

He also represents three of the victims in the Aurora, Colo., shootings.

"It really motivates me greatly. It's something I'm committed to, and being exposed to that has transcended my practice. It's not the only case that I'm representing victims," he said.

Baez says since the Casey Anthony trial, he's been running at full steam, but he did watch the Lifetime movie, "Prosecuting Casey Anthony," that was based on prosecutor Jeff Ashton's book.

"What was your gut reaction?" asked Ober.

"I think I'm the worst person to ask," he said. "When you lived it, you start to nitpick and say, 'I didn't say that,' or 'I didn't do that,'" he said.

Baez said the movie was wrongly billed as answering the question, "What went wrong?"

"If you want to know what went wrong for the prosecution, you should ask the defense, not the prosecution, especially if the prosecution is saying it wouldn't have changed anything," Baez said.

He said it was holes in the evidence and a "systematic breakdown at every point in the case."

Baez also had a beef with the acting in the movie.

"There were times when I was a little disappointed. I don't think actors lived up to the drama of real-life characters," he said.

As for his relationship with Casey, it sounds like there isn't much of one.

"A lot of people think that Casey and I were friends. I was her lawyer, and I was committed to helping her and doing everything I could, but I speak to her as often as I speak to any former client," he said.

"Wonder if Chaney Mason could make the same claim?"

And sadly I agree with Bozo, the casting of this movie sucked. As far as Rob Lowe is concerned, he did a good job showing us what Ashton was like when the media camera's weren't on him. Little too cocky for my liking.
