The disappearance and gruesome slaying of Brittany Killgore, 22, whose naked body was dumped in a ditch in April while her Marine husband was fighting in Afghanistan, has drawn worldwide attention ---- largely because of the sexual kinks of her three suspected killers.

In court documents released last month, police described a sex dungeon and bondage toys, and suggested that the Fallbrook suspects killed Killgore to satisfy their sexual desires. The documents mentioned no evidence that Killgore was involved in their practices.

The case has heightened fears of misunderstanding or persecution in the local bondage community, especially when the best-selling novels in America are those in the "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy, an erotic series that includes acts of bondage, binding and disciplining for pleasure.

Members of the local bondage community ---- who organize primarily through niche social media websites, discreet clubs, and parties at neighborhood homes or specialty businesses ---- fear being seen as crazy or violent.

Psychologists and sex educators said that bondage relationships can be healthy and are somewhat common, though they often remain hidden from public view.

Such secrets are usually exposed only when something has gone terribly wrong, experts said.

Terribly wrong

Court documents detail the living arrangement and lifestyle of the three people charged with Killgore's murder: Louis Ray Perez, his pregnant girlfriend Dorothy Maraglino, and the couple's "sex slave," Jessica Lopez. They all lived in the same Fallbrook house.

In a request for a search warrant targeting the house, a detective wrote that "because of Perez, Maraglino and Lopez's unusual sexual fetishes I believe they may have accosted Killgore for these reasons."

Investigators seized as evidence sex toys and bondage equipment during searches of the home, the document said.

Police first arrested Perez. They later caught Lopez in a bloody hotel room as she was apparently in the middle of a suicide attempt.

A would-be suicide note signed with Lopez's name was found in the room. It included a confession to killing Killgore, attempting to saw off her hands, and dumping her body near a lake in Riverside County. The note also gave a glimpse of the threesome's practices.

"To Mistress," the letter said, "I have always lived to be your slave & pet. I'm sorry my last act is to leave this world without permission but I cannot bear your grief & my guilt at seeing Master go through this from my choice. I do not regret my choice, only the consequences. I die in honor, cloaked in my loyalty to my house, family, & that which is just."

The letter also made repeated mentions of trying to emulate "Dexter," the title character of a popular Showtime television series, in slaying Killgore and disposing of her body. "Dexter" is a calculating serial killer who targets people he considers to be immoral or criminal.

Based on the details made public to date, the suspects' sexual desires seem somewhat irrelevant to the killing, said Mary Andres, a clinical psychologist and assistant professor at the University of Southern California who studies sexuality.

The psychologist has not spoken with anyone directly involved in the Killgore case. However, she said that Lopez's letter seemed to indicate that the suspects' bondage relationship fed Lopez's desperate hunger for a sense of family and stability.

Perez and Maraglino, as the dominant "Master" and "Mistress," took on authoritarian, parental-type roles. Lopez, as the submissive slave of the couple, filled a childlike role, and received boundaries and plenty of attention, Andres said.

Lopez may have seen Killgore as a threat to that family structure, Andres said.

Balance

The suspects' 24-hour bondage relationship involving three people, as described in court documents, is rare, Andres said.

A classic example of a functional bondage relationship is that of a high-powered businesswoman who comes home to her relaxed, artistic husband.

"She's the powerhouse of the relationship outside of the house, but when she comes home, she submits to him," Andres said. "Instead of coming home and resenting her husband for not being man enough, they play these roles where he is man enough."

Andres and other experts say the dominant-submissive relationship is a permanent lifestyle for some.

For others, bondage, domination and sado-masochism are a weekend diversion. They are a few hours of handcuffs, humiliation and spankings to relieve the tension and lift the spirits before Monday morning's stressful business meeting.

A bondage club near Los Angeles International Airport charges weary travelers $200 an hour for the sting of a dominant's discipline, according to its website. Customers can spend the night in the dungeon for an additional fee. Sex is prohibited.

Some consider BDSM inextricably linked to sex. Others consider it almost entirely non-sexual. It could involve a pair of fluffy handcuffs or an entire dungeon full of tools and toys, suspension devices, ropes, chains, whips and flogs. For those who enjoy it, the pain and humiliation blur with pleasure.

The most important aspect is the exchange of power. It satisfies something deeper than sexuality, adherents said.

The submissive person enjoys the freedom from responsibilities. The dominant person enjoys the dual roles of disciplining and nurturing the submissive.

But before anything happens, it's common practice to draw up a detailed contract to make sure neither party is subjected to anything that would make him or her uncomfortable.

Consensual, safe, sane

Most bondage groups embrace the mantra: consensual, safe and sane.

The relationship among Perez, Maraglino and Lopez described in court documents appeared to be consensual.

But safe or sane? Definitely not, said local sex coach Sayaka Adachi, who reviewed a copy of the apparent suicide letter after its release.

The bondage community is intensely private and fiercely accepting of just about any kink or desire a person could have. But it has standards, Adachi said.

Members self-regulate. Anyone who violates any of those three principles can be blacklisted.

She said the conservative suburbia of North County is far kinkier than it might like to admit.

Adachi, who holds a doctorate degree in human sexuality, is teaching a bondage class called "Fifty Shades of Curiosity" to groups of enthusiastic newcomers, spurred by a swell of interest in BDSM.

"The more conservative the people are, the kinkier they tend to be," she said. "But not out in the open."

'Very ordinary'

Several men and women involved in local BDSM communities declined to speak with a reporter over the past three weeks, saying they feared media attention.

Two women, however, agreed to speak on condition of anonymity: a 22-year-old professional submissive who calls herself Kitty and a 28-year-old "switch" ---- one who plays both dominant and submissive roles ---- who calls herself Mistress Bella.

Kitty said she has been involved in BDSM since she was 15. Bella said she has been involved since she was 17. Both said they had normal, healthy childhoods.

They said the bondage community does not tolerate anyone who causes real harm or injury to another.

"Hurting, on the other hand ---- that's what they're there for," Bella said.

Bella said she has "owned" a slave in the past. She would give the slave tasks and check to ensure they were completed. If not, Bella would punish her slave next time they met.

San Diego-based Club X is a social group that networks and supports those involved in BDSM or other fetishes.

"Our lives really are very ordinary," Club X board member "lyla" wrote in an email. "People who expect to find our days and nights filled with fantasy are quickly disillusioned. Safe, Sane and Consensual is about knowing the difference between fantasy and reality."

'What's really perverse'

Many in the community lament the popularity of the "Fifty Shades of Grey" series. Its descriptions of BDSM practices are off, and the bondage-practicing characters have serious past trauma and psychological problems, fitting stereotypes that real practitioners have long sought to dispel.

On the other hand, the books can serve as conversation starters for the curious, Andres said. There is certainly a demand for such conversation-starters in North County.

About 1,200 people waited in line for hours at a Costco store in Carlsbad last month to get their copies of "Fifty Shades of Grey" signed, in person, by British author E.L. James. Store employees had to turn away more fans.

Experts said that America's culture swings between oppression and exploitation of sexuality. So the exposure of the bondage lifestyle opens up a door for fascination, as well as a door for condemnation.

Jonathan Alexander, a professor who studies sexuality and rhetoric at UC Irvine, said sensational headlines and horror stories like Killgore's slaying gain traction because they send the message: "See what happens if you experiment, or exceed the norm? It's going to go drastically bad."

"Ultimately," he said, "what's really perverse is not the sex people engage in, but how we talk about sex ---- not wanting to talk about it, but somehow desperately interested in it at the same time."

New Charges and Details in Brittany Killgore Murder

Eva Knott, August 21, 2012

A prosecutor filed new paperwork today, making new allegations against three persons charged in the death of Brittany Killgore, a 22-year-old woman who was married to a Marine deployed to Afghanistan when she was killed.

Deputy District Attorney Patrick Espinoza filed a new “amended complaint” this morning in San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse. The prosecutor listed 42 “overt acts” in support of his new charges of criminal conspiracy to kidnap Brittany Killgore and then torture and sexually batter the woman before ultimately murdering her.

The new allegations could qualify as “special circumstances” if the District Attorney’s office chooses to pursue the death penalty, in future. This decision probably would not be announced until after a preliminary hearing, which was re-set today for December 3.

Louis Perez, 46, and Jessica Lopez, 25, and Dorothy Maraglino, 37, all pleaded not guilty to all charges through their court-appointed attorneys.

According to the prosecutor, on the day of the crimes Louis Perez announced to persons who were part of a “Bondage, Discipline, Sadism and Masochism (BDSM) community that he was planning on engaging in a BDSM session” that weekend.

The prosecutor also claimed that Brittany Killgore had texted Louis Perez that same day, April 13 2012, asking Perez if he knew anyone who could help her move, and Perez texted in reply, “Party with me tonight & you’ll have five guys there in the morning.” Louis Perez had asked Killgore earlier in the day to go on dinner-cruise with him that same evening, but she had declined, the prosecutor alleges.

Perez also directed co-defendant Dorothy Maraglino to phone Brittany Killgore to tell her that the dinner-cruise tickets were already purchased and would go to waste if she didn’t use them with Perez that night, the prosecutor alleged. And Perez did go to Killgore’s apartment and did pick her up that evening at 7:37 p.m., the prosecutor stated, and thirteen minutes later Killgore texted one word to a friend: “help.”

The prosecutor alleges that Perez took the kidnapped woman to Dorothy Maraglino’s home in Fallbrook, which is a short distance from Killgore’s apartment, and then Perez summoned Maraglino and Jessica Lopez home from a nearby shopping center.

Then the three accused persons “acted out parts of fantasies that members of the conspiracy had previously communicated within the BDSM community which included kidnapping a woman off the street, taking the woman somewhere, playing with the woman and raping the woman,” the prosecutor charged in the new paperwork. The alleged attack included use of a stun baton and causing “incised wounds” and a ligature on the victim’s neck, according to the prosecutor.

Brittany Killgore’s abused body was found four days later, April 17, in a remote part of a county which borders the northern edge of San Diego County.

(CBS) SAN DIEGO - The preliminary hearing for three people charged in the slaying of Marine wife Brittany Killgore was postponed Tuesday to Dec. 3.

Jessica Lopez, 25, Dorothy Maraglino, 37, and Louis Perez, 46, are charged with the April death of 22-year-old Killgore. They appeared before the judge Tuesday at the Vista Superior Court and entered pleas of not guilty, The Fallbrook Village News reported.

At the December hearing, prosecutors will reveal the evidence against the suspects and a judge will decide whether the case is strong enough to try the trio before a jury.

Both prosecutors and defense attorneys asked the judge for the postponement because of "the large volume of discovery involved in the case" and the "need for further investigation" before the preliminary hearing, according to the Village News.

A prosecutor filed new paperwork Tuesday, making new allegations against three persons charged in the death of Kilgore, the San Diego Reader reported.

Deputy District Attorney Patrick Espinoza filed an amended complaint this morning that listed 42 "overt acts" in support of his new charges of criminal conspiracy to kidnap Killgore and then torture and sexually batter the woman before ultimately murdering her. The District Attorney's Office will announce whether to pursue the death penalty at the Dec. 3 hearing.

Prosecutors said Perez kidnapped Killgore after he picked her up for a dinner cruise on April 13, according to the San Diego Reader. He allegedly took her to Maraglino's home in Fallbrook, a short distance from Killgore's apartment, where he summoned Maraglino and Lopez to come over.

Then the three accused persons "acted out parts of fantasies that members of the conspiracy had previously communicated within the BDSM community which included kidnapping a woman off the street, taking the woman somewhere, playing with the woman and raping the woman," Espinoza wrote in the new paperwork.

The alleged attack included use of a stun baton and causing "incised wounds" and a ligature on the victim's neck, according to the prosecutor.

Killgore's body was found April 17 in a rural area east of Temecula, a week after she filed for divorce from her husband, a Marine who was fighting in Afghanistan. The husband was not suspected in her death.

SAN DIEGO — A woman arrested in the killing of a Marine's wife is in foreclosure proceedings on a home listed as a residence by another Marine…

Data lifted from the iPhone belonging to one of three defendants accused of murdering Brittany Killgore indicated that the phone, in the hours after Killgore went missing, was at the remote site where her body was later found, according to court documents released Wednesday.

The documents also indicate that investigators seized a number of items, including sex toys, whips and a "slave contract" confused from the Fallbrook home of the three suspects.

Marine Staff Sgt. Louis Perez, 46, and co-defendants Dorothy Maraglino, 37, and Jessica Lynn Lopez, 25, have each pleaded not guilty to charges including murder, kidnapping and conspiracy in the death of Killgore, whose nude body was found dumped alongside a rural road in Southwest Riverside County on April 17, four days after she was last seen alive.

Each of the suspects faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted. The trio is due back in court for a preliminary hearing in December.

The information released Wednesday comes from newly unsealed affidavits and inventory receipts for 18 additional search warrants. The documents described what evidence investigators were looking for ---- and what they found ---- during searches in the hours and days after Killgore, 22, went missing from her Fallbrook apartment.

Last month, courts unsealed four of the 22 warrants in the case. Most of the affidavits released Wednesday were repetitive and provided little new information, save for details such as the iPhone records.

The warrants were made public over the objections of prosecutors, defense attorneys and Killgore's family. They detail the alternative sexual lifestyle investigators said the trio of defendants practiced, and state that sex practices centered on domination and submission may have motivated the three to attack Killgore.

Authorities have said Killgore was "an unwilling participant" in the sex games the trio played.

In court, prosecutors have asserted that the trio targeted Killgore because one of the suspects, Maraglino, did not like her. Maraglino's attorney has said his client "had no advance knowledge of the killing of Ms. Killgore," and that accusations against his client are "conjecture and speculation."

According to one recently released search warrant affidavit, data extracted from Perez's iPhone revealed that the phone was at Lake Skinner at about 3:50 a.m. April 14 ---- about 10 hours after Killgore was last seen.

Receipts for the items taken from the Fallbrook home where investigators believe Killgore was killed indicate investigators seized electronics, sex toys and items associated with bondage and sex games. Other items seized included prescription drugs, a plastic bag of condoms, an open package of drop cloths and many rolls of tape.

Two days after Killgore's body was found, one investigator wrote that he suspected that the "unusual sexual fetishes" of the defendants were part of the reason why they attacked Killgore.

Perez lived with Lopez and Maraglino in Maraglino's pale yellow house on East Fallbrook Street, about a block from one of the small town's main commercial corridors.

Investigators said in court documents that they believe Killgore was killed in the rundown Fallbrook residence.

Inside that home, investigators said they found a "sex dungeon" ---- containing several sex toys, tools and apparatuses.

A profile on a sex fetish website features a photo that appears to be of Perez and Maraglino. It stated that Perez called himself "Ivan" and referred to himself as "Lord & Master, Dom & Daddy of My house." Maraglino was described as his "slave" and "mistress."

Investigators said they found Killgore's body April 17, hours after finding a dazed and bloody Lopez in a Point Loma motel room, where she apparently had tried to commit suicide.

In the room, investigators also found a seven-page letter ---- an apparent suicide note ---- telling them where to find Killgore's body. The note included a detailed confession to Killgore's murder, and was signed with Lopez's name and aliases.

Three days before she went missing, Killgore had filed for divorce from her estranged husband, Marine Lance Cpl. Cory Killgore, while he was deployed in Afghanistan, according to court records. Investigators have said he is not a suspect in his wife's death.

She had packed up her home and was ready to move out of the state when she was killed.

Investigators say Marine's wife killed after refusing rough sex
Published August 30, 2012

SAN DIEGO – Investigators claim that a Marine's wife was killed after refusing to take part in sadomasochistic sex at a northern San Diego County home.
A judge on Wednesday released court documents, including search warrant affidavits.
In them, investigators say 22-year-old Brittany Killgore apparently didn't know about the sexual lifestyle of Marine Staff Sgt. Louis Perez when she accepted his invitation to a dinner cruise on April 13.
Investigators say they found an apparent "sex dungeon" along with whips, knives and sex toys at the Fallbrook home where Perez is accused of strangling Killgore.
The Camp Pendleton Marine and two women, Dorothy Maraglino and Jessica Lynn Lopez, have pleaded not guilty to murder.
Killgore had filed for divorce three days earlier from her husband, who was in Afghanistan.

Detectives: Marine wife Brittany Killgore died during sexual attacks by perpetrators

New search warrants unsealed in the murder case of a Marine wife reveal that, according to detectives, Brittany Killgore was an unwilling participant in sadomasochistic sexual activity involving the three suspects accused of killing her.

Brittany Killgore was reported missing April 14. Her body was found a few days later.

The San Diego, Calif., North County Superior Court released 22 search warrants in the Killgore murder case on Wednesday. The documents had previously been sealed at the request of the San Diego County district attorney.

Dorothy Grace Marie Maraglino, 36; Jessica Lynn Lopez, 25 and U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Louis Perez, 45, have pleaded not guilty to murder charges in the killing of 22-year-old Killgore.

Killgore was last seen April 13 wearing a purple evening gown. Four days later her body was found abandoned near Lake Skinner in Riverside County.

Last week, an amended complaint was filed, adding new allegations to the murder charges, The North County Times reported.
The complaint also accuses the three suspects of conspiring to kidnap, torture and sexually assault Killgore. The allegations stem from what investigators believe is the alternative sexual lifestyle the three suspects participated in.
Warrants in Marine wife murder case reveal text messages, sex dungeon
In the 22 search warrants obtained Wednesday by NBC 7, detectives say they believe Killgore was killed during sexual activities with the suspects, right before her body was taken to Lake Skinner.
Detectives believe Perez never intended to take Killgore on a dinner cruise because he picked Killgore up from her apartment after the boat would’ve already departed, at approximately 7:37 p.m.
Search warrants reveal Perez and Killgore’s telephone records show their phones were being used in the Fallbrook area when they were supposed to be in San Diego that night.
Warrants also show that Killgore sent a text message to a friend asking for help 13 minutes after she was picked up by Perez. Soon after, additional text messages were sent from Killgore’s phone that weren’t consistent with her normal texting style.
In the warrants, detectives say Killgore’s cell phone appears to have been turned off for approximately two hours on the night of April 13, between 8:14 p.m. and 10:10 p.m. Detectives believe Perez and his accomplices turned off Killgore’s phone during that time so they could kill her and dispose of her body.
The documents confirm Killgore had injuries on her neck, consistent with being strangled, as well as injuries on her wrist and leg.
The warrants also reveal detectives found a receipt for cleaning supplies purchased on April 13, the day Killgore disappeared.
In four search warrants unsealed in July, investigators said they found evidence that an SUV owned by Perez had been used to dump Killgore's body in Lake Skinner.
A shopping bag containing blue latex gloves and a stun baton were also found during the investigation according to the warrants. Both the bag and the gloves had a red substance on them that tested positive for blood, the documents show.
Brittany Killgore, slain wife of Marine, texted 'help' on night of disappearance, prosecutor says
In the warrants, investigators say that San Diego County Crime Lab technicians confirmed the blood to be "a match for the DNA profile of Brittany Killgore."
On April 17, detectives attempted to contact Maraglino at a Point Loma hotel after a vehicle registered to her was located in the parking lot.
Once officials gained access to the hotel room, they spotted blood on the bed and saw a woman who identified herself as “Rosalin” inside, the search warrants document.
"Rosalin" was later identified as Jessica Lopez.
Disturbing finds inside hotel room
Also inside the hotel room were large knives in the bathroom and a note on the dressing area mirror stating, “Pigs read this,” the documents show.

On the dressing table officers said they found a seven-page handwritten letter that began: “I’m sorry Mistress I know you would’ve tried to stop me…You have the wrong f--king person,” according to the warrants.
The letter went on to say “I hid the body of that whore in plain sight," investigators stated in the warrants. One of the search warrants contains the note, which describes the injuries Killgore reportedly suffered and how she was murdered.
The search warrants also reveal more about the unusual sexual activity that prosecutors say was happening at a home on East Fallbrook Street, the residence of Maraglino and her roommate Lopez.
According to the warrant, an ex-girlfriend of Perez allegedly told police they were involved in bondage, whipping, cutting and spanking.
She told police that on one occasion a female was held in the sex dungeon and not allowed to leave without Perez’s permission, according to the search warrants.

Brittany Killgore not the first victim of defendants’ bizarre sexual appetites
August 30, 2012

Newly released court documents are shedding light on the strangulation slaying of the young wife of a Marine. Authorities say three defendants jailed in the case had on, at least one other occasion, held a different woman captive and refused to let her go until she went along with their sadomasochist sex acts.

The affidavits, the second round of court documents to be unsealed in the case this summer, also showed authorities believe that the three defendants had previously held another woman captive and refused to let her loose until she cooperated with their sex play. Details of that incident were not immediately reported.

Last week, the District Attorney’s Office filed additional charges of conspiracy, kidnapping and torture against all three defendants, who at one time lived together in Fallbrook.

According to court documents, Perez said in online posts with a bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism community that he was planning to have a BDSM session the weekend of April 13. He allegedly invited Killgore to go on a dinner cruise in San Diego the night of April 13.

She initially declined but agreed after Maraglino said it was OK and Perez promised Killgore she’d have help moving the following morning, authorities said.

Three defendants accused in Brittany Killgore slaying, in court today

Eva Knott, November 7, 2012

Three defendants in a notorious murder case were in court today, one defendant got a new attorney and the date for a preliminary hearing for all three was reset for the end of January.

Dorothy Maraglino is reportedly considering acting as her own attorney, but she did accept a court-appointed defense attorney today. Megan Marcotte, a county defender, replaces Sean Leslie as counsel for Maraglino, 37.

Louis Perez, 46, only spoke briefly, to consent when the judge asked his permission to move the date for the preliminary hearing from December 3 to January 24, 2013.

The attorney for defendant Jessica Lopez, 25, is protesting the seizure of what she termed "attorney-client-privileged" paperwork from the jail cell of her client. Defense attorney Sloan Ostbye was sent to another courtroom for another judge to hear that matter, this afternoon in San Diego's North County Superior Courthouse.

All three defendants plead not guilty and deny all allegations, in the murder of a young woman who was married to a deployed Marine at the time she went missing. Prosecutor Pat Espinoza is charging special circumstances, including conspiracy and kidnap and torture in the brutal death of Brittany Killgore. The abused body of the 22-year-old woman was found three days after she was reported missing, in April of this year. The prosecutor said Brittany Killgore was last seen alive getting into a car with Louis Perez.

Source says disguised communication found in defendant's jail cell

The District Attorney’s office may have hired a cipher expert to decode a document found in the jail cell of a defendant charged in a notorious murder, according to a well-placed source.

The defense attorney for one female defendant in the Brittany Killgore murder case has been filing motions trying to prevent prosecution from gaining access to certain documents found in that defendant’s jail cell. Defense requests were apparently denied, and now a prosecutor is trying to decode at least one of the pages, according to a reliable source. The captured message is said to be disguised, written in some kind of code.

The body of 22-year-old Brittany Dawn Killgore was found on April 17, 2012, in a remote area north of San Diego County. Sheriff’s detectives issued a statement early in their investigation of a missing-person case, stating that Louis Ray Perez was the person last seen with Brittany Killgore, on Friday, April 13, 2012.

Brittany Killgore was married to a Marine reportedly deployed to Afghanistan at the time of her disappearance.

Louis Ray Perez, 46, was an active-duty Marine when he was arrested. He and co-defendants Jessica Lynn Lopez, 25, and Dorothy Maraglino, 37, have all pleaded not-guilty to murder. All three defendants also face special circumstance allegations of conspiracy and kidnap and torture; these make the accused eligible for the death penalty.

Jessica Lynn Lopez, 25, was found in a hotel room in San Diego with reportedly self-inflicted cuts to her neck and arms. In the same room with her, investigators found a so-called suicide note, which contained shocking details of the killing of a woman, and apparently led investigators to find the body of missing Brittany Killgore.

Dorothy Maraglino reportedly gave birth (while in custody) to a baby girl fathered by her co-defendant Louis Perez.

Search warrants in this case revealed a frightening list of evidence that detectives have gathered, including: nylon rope and hairs from rope, used duct tape, plastic bags, rope/pulley system in plastic bag, Black & Decker saber saw and red skill saw in downstairs bedroom closet, documents – slave contract, Slave Rules handwritten note on top of file cabinet, red dog collar with heart pendant and red stains, stun baton and stun gun, plastic bags. These items were taken from defendants’ vehicles and Jessica Lopez’ home, according to search warrants.

More details of this case are expected to be revealed in two weeks, when prosecutor Patrick Espinoza presents evidence in a preliminary hearing on March 11, in San Diego’s North County Superior courthouse.

Post by Wrapitup Thu Feb 28, 2013 10:25 pm

February 27, 2013 12:07 PM By Nastacia Leshchinskaya

It’s a strange case that keeps getting stranger. Three people involved in a master-slave BDSM relationship are accused of murdering a pretty young Marine wife in April of last year. Jessica Lopez, 25, slave to Dorothy Maraglino, 37, and then-Marine Louis Perez, 46, took the fall for Brittany Killgore’s death in a rambling suicide note titled “PIGS READ THIS.” The note detailed how she murdered Killgore, tried to dismember her with power tools and dumped her body in Lake Skinner in Riverside County, Ca. Lopez’s plan to kill herself by cutting her wrists didn’t come to fruition: she was bleeding and weakened but alive when police entered her hotel room four days after Killgore’s murder. Lopez, along with Maraglino and Perez, was charged with killing Killgore. Although she explicitly took the blame for the murder, evidence police found, including blood and hair in Perez’s car, led authorities to believe all three were involved in the murder. The suspects all lived together and reportedly had a “sex dungeon” in the basement; San Diego Sheriff’s homicide Detective Brian Patterson believes that the trio may have murdered Killgore to satisfy their fetishes. All three have pleaded not guilty to first degree murder. While in jail, Dorothy Maraglino reportedly gave birth to Perez’s daughter.

Now, another cryptic note may hold key evidence in the case. The San Diego Reader reports that a document, written in some kind of code, was found in the jail cell of one of the female defendants–either Lopez or Maraglino. That defendant’s attorney reportedly filed motions to prevent the prosecution from gaining access to the note, but was denied. According to an undisclosed source cited by the Reader, the District Attorney’s office has hired a cipher expert to decode the message.

Authorities believe Killgore, whose husband was deployed overseas, was planning to go on a dinner cruise with Perez when she was killed. A final text message to a friend from her phone read simply, “Help.” A homeless man later found her phone by his feet when he woke up after sleeping in the doorway of a hotel.

NOON MARCH 10, 2013

FALLBROOK — Shortly after Brittany Killgore went missing from Fallbrook last spring, investigators said they suspected the young Marine wife was the victim of foul play.

A few days later, her body was found in a rural area of Southwest Riverside County, and the arrests mounted. First, a Camp Pendleton Marine was detained on a weapons charge, then a woman who attempted to slash her own throat while holed up in a Point Loma motel.

A couple of weeks later, a pregnant woman was taken into custody in downtown San Diego.

As the investigation continued, information began to surface about the three suspects being involved in an unconventional sexual lifestyle that included bondage and master/slave role playing. But prosecutors said homicide detectives remained tight-lipped about how the pieces of the puzzle fit together, except to say that Killgore was an “innocent victim.”

Starting Monday, a fuller picture of how — and, perhaps, why — Killgore was slain is expected to be revealed in Vista Superior Court, when a preliminary hearing is scheduled to start. The hearing is expected to last five days.

The defendants, Louis Ray Perez, Jessica Lynn Lopez and Dorothy Grace Marie Maraglino, have pleaded not guilty to murder charges.

Deputy District Attorney Patrick Espinoza said he expects to call about 25 witnesses to testify during the hearing, at the end of which a judge will decide whether enough evidence exists for the case to go to trial.

It’s not clear whether defense lawyers in the case will present any evidence. By law, they are not required to do so.

Killgore moved to Fallbrook in 2010 with her husband, a Camp Pendleton Marine who was deployed to Afghanistan at the time she disappeared.

She was last seen by a friend April 13 wearing a purple evening gown. Her cellphone was found in the Gaslamp Quarter.

The prosecutor said in court that Killgore met the defendants when she accompanied a friend to an East Fallbrook Street house to buy an item posted for sale online. Later, she was lured back to the home, where investigators believe she was fatally strangled.

The body also had injuries that looked as though someone had tried to dismember her.

Sheriff’s detectives searched the house, where all three defendants had lived, and found what the investigators described as a sex room or dungeon. A detective said in court documents that she believed the suspects engaged in bondage and torture, and that Killgore was an “unwilling participant” in those activities.

Perez, 46, was arrested April 15 on suspicion of possessing a stolen AR-15 assault rifle. He was charged with murder about a week later.

Hours after Lopez, 25, was arrested at a Ramada Inn in Point Loma on April 17, investigators found Killgore’s body near Lake Skinner, east of Murrieta.

Inside the motel room, investigators found what they described as a suicide note. In it, Lopez claimed that it was she who bound and strangled Killgore, not her co-defendants whom she referred to as “Master” and “Mistress.”

Lopez’s lawyer, Sloan Ostbye, has said the contents of the note should not be believed.

The prosecutor has said that Maraglino, Perez’s girlfriend, played a “critical role” in the slaying, in part by luring Killgore away from her own Fallbrook home.

Lopez and Maraglino appeared in court briefly on Friday for a hearing in which their lawyers were expected to ask a judge to keep certain documents under seal, arguing that they are protected by attorney-client privilege.

That matter was postponed until March 15.

Preliminary hearing set to begin Monday for 3 accused in death of Marine wife Brittany Killgore

Killgore's remains found in Riverside County ditch

VISTA, Calif. - A preliminary hearing is scheduled to begin Monday for three people accused in the strangulation death last year of a 22-year-old Marine wife, whose body was found nude and mutilated in a roadside ditch near Lake Skinner in southwest Riverside County.

Camp Pendleton Marine Sgt. Louis Ray Perez, 46, Dorothy Grace Marie Maraglino, 37, and Jessica Lynn Lopez, 25, are charged with first-degree murder in the death of Brittany Killgore last April.

The defendants, who at one time lived together in Fallbrook, are also charged with conspiracy, kidnapping and torture.

At the time of her death, Killgore lived in Fallbrook with her estranged Camp Pendleton-based husband. He was deployed in Afghanistan at the time of her death and was cleared of any involvement in the slaying.

All three defendants were involved in sexual behavior that included bondage, torture, and master, servant and slave role playing, and that Killgore was an "unwilling participant" in those activities, sheriff's detective Susan Fiske wrote in the search warrant affidavits.

According to court documents, Perez said in online posts with a bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism community that he was planning to have a BDSM session the weekend of April 13, 2012. He allegedly invited Killgore to go on a dinner cruise in San Diego the night of April 13. She initially declined but agreed after Maraglino said it was OK and Perez promised Killgore she'd have help moving the following morning, authorities said.

Minutes after Killgore and Perez met up, she sent a text message to a friend that read, "Help," according to authorities. Perez then allegedly took Killgore to his Fallbrook home -- where authorities said there were ropes, whips, a Taser, a nightstick, spiked gloves and a sex dungeon -- before texting Lopez and Maraglino to join him.

At some point, Perez decided to kill Killgore and sent phony messages in her name to friends, authorities said.

The preliminary hearing -- expected to last five days -- will determine whether there is enough evidence for the defendants to stand trial.

The body of Brittany Killgore, 22, was found four days after she was reported missing

By Sarah Grieco

The San Diego County District Attorney's office has charged three people - a man and two women - with murder in the death of 22-year-old Brittany Killgore.

Here is a breakdown of what has happened the days leading up to and following the discovery of Killgore's body near Lake Skinner on April 17 just four days after she was reported missing.

Tuesday, April 10:
Killgore and her husband Cory, who was deployed to Afghanistan, file for divorce.

Friday, April 13:
A friend sees Killgore at 5 p.m. in Fallbrook, which is the last known contact she had with someone. Killgore was last seen wearing a dark purple evening gown with purple floral glitter patterns.

Saturday, April 14:
A homeless man attempts to sell Killgore's cell phone to a stranger according to officials. The person then calls Killgore's mother, Michelle Wrest, who alerts authorities. Investigators launch a search for Killgore.

Sunday, April 15:
Deputies arrest 45-year-old Marine Louis Perez on unrelated charges. Perez allegedly stole an AR-15 assault rifle. He was questioned regarding Killgore's disappearance, but detectives said he was uncooperative. Perez was booked into the Vista Detention Center and his bail was set at $500,000.

Monday, April 16:
Flyers are posted and deputies ask for the public’s assistance in locating Killgore. Investigators said they believe there is a strong likelihood she is the victim of foul play. Investigators searched De Luz Canyon near Fallbrook on Monday based on information they received, but did not find anything. Neighbors tell NBCSanDiego 30 to 40 investigators searched a home at 317 East Fallbrook Street using flashlights and taking photographs. They also searched a boat kept behind the home.

Tuesday, April 17:
A second suspect, Jessica Lynn Lopez, was arrested at the Ramada Inn on the 1400 block of Rosecrans Street. The 25-year-old had self-inflicted injuries, according to Lt. Larry Nesbit. Lopez was transported to UCSD Medical Center for "medical necessity" according to Cpt. Duncan Fraser with the sheriff’s homicide division. Just before 11 p.m., Lopez was booked into Las Colinas Detention Facility.

A female body was discovered by a road worker in Riverside County near Lake Skinner, but investigators could not say whether the body was Killgore's.

Wednesday, April 18:
The Medical Examiner's office confirmed the identity of the female body found in Riverside as Brittany Killgore.
Killgore's grandmother, Cheryl Noble, reports that Killgore was planning to return to her parent's house on April 17.

Perez pleaded not guilty to weapons charges during his arraignment. The judge upheld the bail of $500,000. No other charges were added.

Thursday, April 19:
Lopez pleaded "not guilty" to first-degree murder charges. The judge set her bail at $3 million. Lopez faces 25 years to life if she is convicted.

San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis charged Lopez with murder and said additional charges are possible.

Killgore's father, Darryl Wrest, spoke publicly, asking that people respect his family and daughter's memory.

Tuesday, April 24:
Perez is arrested on murder charges by the sheriff's department.

Thursday, April 26:
Brittany's husband released a statement saying how much she meant to him.

Prosecutors say they found Killgore's blood and a weapon inside Perez' car at his arraignment.

Thursday, May 10:
Detectives make a third arrest in the case when they take Dorothy Grace Marie Maraglino, 36, into custody.

Tuesday, May 15:
Maraglino appears in a Vista courtroom to face a murder charge. Prosecutors say the 36-year-old was involved in the "beginning, middle and end" of the crime.

Tuesday, May 22:
All three defendants appear in court to face a second felony complaint. The judge orders they provide handwriting samples to prosecutors and sets a preliminary hearing for August 20.

Wednesday June 27:
A detective testified that Perez, Maraglino and Lopez were involved in sadomasochistic activity, but that Killgore was not involved in that lifestyle. Search warrants that revealed the activity remained sealed at the District Attorney's request.

Thursday July 19:
Four search warrants were unsealed in the case at the request of a state appeals court judge, revealing several crucial pieces of evidence in the case. The evidence including a stun gun, latex gloves and a suicide note allegedly written by one defendant. Detectives also detailed a timeline of text messages sent to and from the defendants and Killgore.

Thursday August 29:
Twenty-two additional search warrants were released that stated Killgore was an unwilling participant in sadomasochistic sexual activity involving the three suspects accused of killing her.

HEARING INTO MARINE WIFE’S DEATH BEGINS MONDAY
Testimony from 25 expected in slaying of Marine’s wife

Post by Wrapitup Tue Mar 12, 2013 2:18 am

By JULIE WATSON 03/11/13 10:30 PM ET EDT

VISTA, Calif. — A Marine Corps wife allegedly killed by three people in a sex bondage ring used to socialize with its members but never participated in their alternative lifestyle, the victim's best friend testified Monday.

Elizabeth Hernandez detailed for the first time Brittany Killgore's alleged relationship to the defendants – another Marine and two women – during a preliminary hearing in San Diego County that will determine if the suspects stand trial in the case.

Marine Sgt. Louis Perez, Jessica Lopez and Dorothy Maraglino have pleaded not guilty to murder.

Hernandez said she and Killgore, 22, became acquainted with the defendants in 2011 after Hernandez responded to an ad selling a fertility monitor on a website used by military families.

Hernandez said she befriended Maraglino, 37, because the two were both trying to have a baby, and that she and Killgore regularly visited Maraglino's home where she lived with Lopez.

Hernandez said the trio openly talked about their lifestyle in which Perez played the master, Maraglino was the mistress and Lopez was the slave. They also had a giant spider web on the wall and bars on the ceiling used in their sex games.

Hernandez said she and Killgore made it clear they were not interested in participating. Instead, Hernandez and Maraglino would cook together, share recipes and talk about life, according to Hernandez's testimony.

Then Hernandez and Killgore had a falling out in 2012 as the victim prepared to divorce her husband, Lance Cpl. Cory Killgore, who was serving in Afghanistan.

Hernandez said she talked about the souring of their friendship with Perez and the others. She said they started referring to Killgore as "the disease" and "herpes" after Killgore started dating Hernandez's brother.

Perez and Maraglino "would say they could get rid of her but they wouldn't because they knew I would miss her," Hernandez testified, saying she thought they were joking.

Killgore was last seen with Perez.

Another friend of Killgore, Channy Tal, testified that on April 13 when Killgore would later go missing, Perez had stopped by Killgore's apartment and insisted she go on a dinner cruise with him that night.

Tal was in the apartment, helping Killgore pack because she was planning on moving back to Pennsylvania.

Tal said later that night she received a text message from Killgore's cellphone that read, "Help."

Tal said she spent the night frantically trying to reach her friend but was never able to talk to her.

Perez has said he and Killgore went their separate ways that night and he does not know what happened to her after that.

Killgore's nude body was found three days later in a ditch near Lake Skinner in Riverside County.

Authorities say Killgore was kidnapped and made an unwilling participant in bondage and torture before she was strangled.

Sheriff's detectives said they found "bondage-type sex apparatuses, toys and tools" in Maraglino's Fallbrook home.

Perez was arrested April 15 on suspicion of possessing a stolen assault rifle and was later charged with murder.

Lopez was arrested April 17 at a San Diego hotel where authorities said she was discovered with self-inflicted cuts.

Authorities also found a letter in which Lopez allegedly claimed she killed Killgore out of fear that the woman would come steal away Perez, whom she described as her "master."

Maraglino has given birth since her arrest.

The preliminary hearing is expected to last five days.

VISTA, Calif. - Testimony centered around cell phone records Wednesday in a preliminary hearing for a Marine sergeant, his girlfriend and another woman accused in the death of a 22-year-old military wife from Fallbrook.

Louis Ray Perez, 46, Dorothy Maraglino, 37, and 25-year-old Jessica Lynn Lopez are charged with murder in the death of Brittany Killgore, whose nude body was found in southwest Riverside County four days after she went missing last April 13. Authorities believe she was strangled.

A custodian of records from Sprint Nextel, Joseph Trawicki, testified about phone calls and text messages sent and received by various cell phones the night Killgore disappeared.

A friend of the victim, Channy Tal, testified earlier in the hearing that she was helping Killgore pack for a move back to Pennsylvania when Perez, a staff sergeant at Camp Pendleton, came over and insisted that Killgore go on the dinner cruise with him.

Killgore's Marine husband -- who was estranged from the victim -- was deployed in Afghanistan at the time of her murder and was cleared of any wrongdoing. Killgore had filed for divorce a few days before her death.

The witness said Killgore was reluctant to go on the cruise, but decided to accompany Perez after speaking with his girlfriend, Maraglino, who said it was OK because she was pregnant and didn't want to get seasick.

Perez also said he would get five men to help Killgore move, according to Tal.

Tal said Killgore texted the word "help" about 7:50 p.m., soon after leaving with Perez for the dinner cruise in San Diego. She said she tried to text Killgore back, but got no reply.

"I was concerned that something was wrong," Tal testified.

Minutes later, Tal said she texted Killgore again, writing, "Brit, are you OK? I'm freaking out."

Tal said she got a text back from Killgore's phone that read, "Yes, I love this party!"

The witness said Killgore never used the word "yes," but always "yeah."

Tal testified that she insisted that Killgore call so she could hear her voice, but got only a text in return that read, "(Call) in a few ... hot guys."

The witness said she used a friend's phone to contact Perez, who she knew as "Ivan." Perez told her that he dropped Killgore at a club and saw her go off with "two guys," and he lost track of her, according to Tal.

Tal said she and her friends decided to report Killgore missing the next morning.

She said sheriff's deputies contacted Perez on April 14 and he showed up at Killgore's apartment.

"He looked kind of dirty, but he was calm and collected," Tal testified.

Deputy James Breneman took the stand and testified that Perez sounded "distraught or panicked."

Deputy James Breneman had been dispatched to Killgore's Fallbrook apartment to follow-up on the missing persons report. When he got there, Tal told him Perez had taken Killgore on a date the night before and mentioned Killgore's text message.

Breneman testified Tal gave him Perez' cellphone number, and when the deputy dialed it, Perez picked up.

"He was speaking really fast, and then kept asking me, 'Are you the media? Are you sure you're not the media?'" Breneman said.

Breneman said Perez explained that some reporters had called him to ask about Killgore's disappearance.

Perez did not want to speak on the phone, so he agreed to meet the deputy outside Killgore's apartment. Breneman said at first Perez was calm, but as he began to tell his story, his demeanor changed and he started to appear angry.

The deputy testified Perez told him the boat had already left the dock for the dinner cruise they had planned to go on, so they decided to party at a bar in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter. Parking was an issue, so Perez dropped Killgore off, and he became "angry and clenched his jaw" as he told the deputy that his date was standing with a couple of guys.

Breneman testified Perez told him he parked his car and returned to the bar, but Killgore was nowhere to be found.

"He stated he figured she pulled 'a Brittany' and that she had just hooked up with somebody else. I asked him what he meant by pulled 'a Brittany' and he stated she was flighty and she's not very serious," Breneman said.

Perez told the deputy he later went to the Maraglino home in Fallbrook, where he stayed all night.

Although Perez was not a suspect at that point, the deputy said he asked Perez if he would be willing to go to the Sheriff's Substation in Fallbrook for further questioning. Perez agreed.

After Perez was transported to the substation, Breneman found his car in a nearby parking lot.

"I noticed the vehicle was covered with mud in the wheel wells and on the running boards," testified Breneman, who said that the muddy tires didn't fit with the story Perez had just told him, since it had rained the day before.

The deputy then noticed a black plastic rifle case in plain view through the window of Perez' white Ford Explorer.

Deputy Jeff Lauhon testified there was an AR-15 assault-style rifle inside the case.

"When I saw the weapon, I recognized it as being illegal to own in the state of California," Lauhon said.

All three defendants were involved in sexual behavior that included bondage, torture, and master, servant and slave role-playing, and Killgore was an "unwilling participant" in those activities, sheriff's detective Susan Fiske alleged in search warrant affidavits.

According to court documents, Perez participated in a bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism community and said in online posts that he was planning to have a BDSM session the weekend of April 13, 2012.

Perez allegedly took Killgore to his Fallbrook home -- where authorities said they found ropes, whips, a Taser, a nightstick, spiked gloves and a "sex dungeon" -- before texting Lopez and Maraglino to join him.

At some point, Perez decided to kill Killgore, authorities allege.

The preliminary hearing -- expected to last through Friday -- will determine whether there's enough evidence for the defendants to stand trial.

For the third straight day, Killgore's parents sat in the front row of the courtroom.

Killgore's father told 10News they will be there every day and said that they owe it to Brittany.

Evidence confirmed statements in handwritten note found with one suspect

Eva Knott, March 14, 2013

Dr. Craig Nelson, a forensic pathologist, testified today that 22-year-old Brittany Killgore was killed by ligature strangulation. The doctor first observed the body where it was found, in the dirt alongside a road near Lake Skinner, in a remote area of Southern California, on April 17, 2012.

Brittany Killgore was declared missing after she reportedly went on a date with a 46-year-old sergeant in the Marines named Louis Ray Perez; the young woman was married to a Marine deployed in Afghanistan at the time.

Dr. Nelson said evidence at the scene indicated “the body was not found in the place where she died.”

Investigators have said they believe Brittany Killgore was killed in a “torture dungeon” in a home in Fallbrook, in northern San Diego County.

Dr. Nelson said subcutaneous bleeding on the right wrist of the deceased was “consistent with handcuff use.”

The doctor described marks on the outside of the deceased’s neck and fractured cartilage inside, “it does indicate the airway was crushed,” he said.

“Post-mortem” or after-death injuries to the body included cuts down into the bone. The doctor described “tool marks” and wounds “consistent with saw marks.” The doctor placed an item of evidence given to him by deputies, a saw, into one of the wounds on the body and photographed it; the photo of the power tool alongside the marks on the body was presented in court today as evidence.

Three unusual persons who frequented the Fallbrook home where it is suspected that the woman was killed, have pleaded not-guilty to charges of kidnap and torture and murder. Louis Perez, 46, and Jessica Lopez, 25, and Dorothy Maraglino, 37 are in court hearing evidence all this week in San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse.

Three days after Brittany Killgore went missing, investigators found what was termed a “suicide note” in the same room with suspect Jessica Lopez. The hand-written pages included these statements: “I hid the body of that (slur) in almost plain sight she didn’t deserve a burial. I dropped that useless waste of space off some little hill off the road by lake skinner. I don’t know where exactly. I tossed bleach all over the (slur) & just rolled her down the hill. But since I know how incompetent you are here’s what you’ll find. You’ll probably find ligature marks from the handcuffs…you’ll also find a taser mark and several ligature marks around her scrawny little neck as the (slur) just wouldn’t die. You’ll find plenty of mutilation marks & bruises of where I knocked her down & held her still.”

The note reportedly helped investigators find the body.

The fifth day of testimony is expected to begin tomorrow morning, Friday March 15, 2013, before the Honorable K. Michael Kirkman.

A 22-year-old military wife from Fallbrook who authorities said was killed after she was kidnapped and forced to participate in a bondage and sadomasochistic sex ring was strangled before her naked body was dumped in southwest Riverside County, a deputy medical examiner testified today.

Dr. Craig Nelson testified in a preliminary hearing for Louis Ray Perez, 46, Dorothy Maraglino, 37, and 25-year-old Jessica Lynn Lopez that the victim, Brittany Killgore, died after being strangled with some sort of ligature.

Killgore, who had filed for divorce from her Marine husband and was preparing to move back to Pennsylvania, also had a deep cut from a saw below her left knee, suggesting attempted dismemberment after she died, Nelson testified.

Nelson couldn’t say whether the victim was tortured.

Perez, a Camp Pendleton Marine sergeant, his girlfriend Maraglino and Lopez are charged with murder, conspiracy, kidnapping and torture.

Killgore’s body was found near Lake Skinner last April 17, four days after she agreed to go on a dinner cruise with Perez.

A friend testified that Killgore texted the word “help” shortly after leaving with Perez. Perez told the friend in a subsequent phone call that he dropped Killgore at a bar and saw her go off with “two guys,” according to the friend’s testimony.

Perez allegedly took Killgore to his Fallbrook home — where authorities said they found ropes, whips, a Taser, a nightstick, spiked gloves and a “sex dungeon” — before texting Lopez and Maraglino to join him.

At some point, Perez decided to kill Killgore, authorities allege.

All three defendants were involved in sexual behavior that included bondage, torture and master, servant and slave role-playing, and Killgore was an “unwilling participant” in those activities, sheriff’s detective Susan Fiske alleged in search warrant affidavits.

The preliminary hearing will resume tomorrow.

When it is over, Judge K. Michael Kirkman will determine whether enough evidence was presented for the defendants to stand trial.

(AP) VISTA, Calif. - A San Diego County judge is expected to rule on whether three people allegedly involved in a sex bondage ring will stand trial for the killing of a 22-year-old Marine Corps wife.

Prosecutors plan to present their final testimonies in the case of Brittany Killgore at San Diego Superior Court on Monday.

Investigators say Killgore was kidnapped and made an unwilling participant in bondage and torture before she was strangled.

Prosecutors say the Fallbrook woman disappeared April 13 after agreeing to go on a dinner cruise with Marine Sgt. Louis Perez.

Her nude body was found near a lake four days later.

Perez, Jessica Lopez and Dorothy Maraglino have pleaded not guilty to murder.

Perez told investigators he dropped Killgore off at a nightclub in downtown San Diego.

VISTA - A Camp Pendleton Marine and two women were ordered today to stand trial on murder, torture and other charges stemming from the death of a military wife from Fallbrook, who authorities say was killed after being kidnapped and forced to participate in a bondage and sadomasochistic sex ring.

After a six-day preliminary hearing, Vista Judge K. Michael Kirkman found that enough evidence was presented for Louis Ray Perez, 46, Dorothy Maraglino, 37, and 25-year-old Jessica Lynn Lopez to proceed to trial.

In addition to murder and torture, the defendants are charged with conspiracy, attempted sexual battery and kidnapping.

Brittany Killgore's body was found near Lake Skinner last April 17, four days after the 22-year-old victim agreed to go on a dinner cruise with Perez.

A deputy medical examiner testified that Killgore was strangled with some sort of ligature before being dumped near the Riverside County lake. The victim also had a deep cut from a saw below her left knee, suggesting attempted dismemberment after she died, Dr. Craig Nelson testified.

[ Berry-Bell and Hall Mortuary ] Cory Killgore was cleared of any wrongdoing in his wife's death.

The victim's best friend said she and Killgore became acquainted with the defendants in 2011 but never participated in their alternative lifestyle.

Another friend testified that Killgore texted the word "help" shortly after leaving with Perez, who told the friend in a subsequent phone call that he dropped Killgore at a bar and saw her go off with "two guys."

Perez allegedly took Killgore to Maraglino's home in Fallbrook, where authorities said they found ropes, whips, a Taser, a nightstick, spiked gloves and a "sex dungeon."

All three defendants were involved in sexual behavior that included bondage, torture and master, servant and slave role-playing, and Killgore was an "unwilling participant" in those activities, sheriff's detective Susan Fiske alleged in search warrant affidavits.

A document written by Maraglino and found during a search of her Fallbrook home indicated she was a "willing participant" in whipping, beating and asphyxiation and any "loss of life should be considered an accident," sheriff's Detective Brian Patterson testified today.

In another letter, Maraglino wrote of a fantasy in which a person's throat is slit from behind, Patterson testified.

A status conference is scheduled Thursday in Kirkman's courtroom.

A trial is set Sept. 30 for a Camp Pendleton Marine and two women accused of murdering a military wife and leaving her body near Lake Skinner after she was forced to take part in a bondage and sadomasochistic sex ring.

Judge K. Michael Kirkman on Thursday also scheduled a hearing for Tuesday on a motion over whether prosecutors in the case of Louis Ray Perez, 46, Dorothy Maraglino, 37, and 25-year-old Jessica Lynn Lopez will be allowed to view certain documents that are currently sealed.

On Monday, the judge ordered the three defendants to trial after an often-lurid six-day preliminary hearing regarding the death of 22-year-old Brittany Killgore. Her body was found near Lake Skinner last April 17, four days after she agreed to go on a dinner cruise with Perez.

The District Attorney’s office gained access last week to more evidence, said to be handwritten documents created by one of the defendants in a high-profile, notorious murder case.
A “pile” of documents was hand-delivered to a former defense attorney for Dorothy Maraglino, who is a defendant in the murder case of Brittany Killgore; the victim was declared missing almost one year ago.

A person identified as “Becky” and said to be a friend of defendant Maraglino, reportedly gave the documents to attorney Sean Leslie, and then the presiding judge in the case ordered that attorney to produce the documents. (Sean Leslie was relieved as counsel some months ago, and Maraglino is now represented by Megan Marcotte.)
Last week, Honorable K. Michael Kirkman declared that incriminating evidence provided by a third party does not violate the protection against self-incrimination, and prosecutor Patrick Espinoza was given access to a portion of the new evidence; the judge has not yet ruled on all the documents.

The body of 22-year-old Brittany Dawn Killgore was found on April 17, 2012, in a remote area north of San Diego County. All three defendants in the case, Louis Ray Perez, 46, and Jessica Lopez, 25, and Dorothy Maraglino, 37, plead not-guilty to murder and special allegations of conspiracy and kidnap and torture -- which make the accused eligible for the death penalty.

Brittany Killgore was married to a Marine reportedly deployed to Afghanistan at the time of her disappearance, April 13, 2012. The first person arrested in the case, Louis Perez, was an active-duty Marine at the time. Those facts, and the accusation that Brittany Killgore was kidnapped and abused and killed to satisfy a sado-masochistic fantasy, portrayed as a dominating fetish in the lives of all three defendants by the prosecutor, has caused this case to become a sensation both within and beyond the borders of San Diego County.

Frightening evidence gathered by investigators includes: nylon rope and hairs from rope, used duct tape, rope/pulley system in plastic bag, Black & Decker saber saw and red skill saw in downstairs bedroom closet, documents – slave contract, Slave Rules handwritten note on top of file cabinet, red dog collar with heart pendant and red stains, stun baton and stun gun. These items were taken from defendants’ vehicles and Dorothy Maraglino’s home, according to search warrants.

All three defendants are next scheduled to be in court on May 10, 2013, in San Diego’s North County Superior courthouse.

More than a year since Brittany Dawn Killgore’s body was found just outside of San Diego County, a prosecutor in the murder case is sorting through new evidence.

Three weeks ago, a judge allowed prosecutor Patrick Espinoza access to a “pile” of handwritten documents reportedly created by one of the defendants. A friend of defendant Dorothy Maraglino gave the papers to her defense attorney, according to statements in court.

Dorothy Maraglino, 37, and Jessica Lopez, 25, and Louis Ray Perez, 46, are all charged with kidnap and torture and murder in the death of Brittany Killgore, who was 22-years-old when she disappeared.
Louis Ray Perez was called “Master Ivan” and Dorothy Maraglino was “Dee” or “Kitten,” in what attorneys describe as a master-slave relationship between the defendants.

One handwritten note recently obtained is dated April 13, 2012 -- this is the same day that the murdered woman disappeared. The note reads: “I Dee do hereby give to Ivan all my grudges and revenge from my birth till now. I release my anger and entrust justice into Ivan’s hands. I accept Ivan will decide, design, and dispense the measure of restribution (sic) he deems appropriate to my enemies, tormentors, and violators. (signed) Dee (with pink droplets around the signature.)”

Another note reads: “Please consider accepting this gift. I leave all methods of retribution to you. Please distroy them all. Rape the women. Destroy their reputation. Take their posessions. When you deem take their last breath. I release all I carry from my rapist, abuseas, and tormentors to you. I’ll join in where you direct me and allow, but I realse my own will and agenda in these matters. (signed) Kitten (with pink droplets around the signature.)” (Unique spelling is preserved.)

There is another note which describes violence during a sex act; it reads in part: “I have a vision of comming up behind a girl who is riding you…I slit her throat…blood flows onto your chest…and she Expires.” This note is not signed.

The body of 22-year-old Brittany Killgore was declared missing after she reportedly got into a car with Louis Perez the night of Friday, April 13, 2012. Her abused body was found four days later, on April 17, in a remote area of Riverside County. Special allegations could make all three defendants eligible for the death penalty.

The murdered woman was married to a Marine deployed to Afghanistan at the time of her disappearance, and defendant Louis Perez was an active-duty Marine when he was arrested. Those facts, and the prosecutor’s accusation that the beautiful victim was targeted as part of a sado-masochistic fantasy, has made the case a sensation in San Diego County and beyond.

The next court appearance for all three defendants, who plead not guilty, is set for May 10, 2013, before the Honorable K. Michael Kirkman, in San Diego’s North County Superior courthouse.

The prosecutor in a high-profile murder case was denied access to papers found in one defendant’s jail cell, by a ruling in San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse today, July 10, 2013.

Judge K. Michael Kirkman ruled in favor of defense attorney Sloan Ostbye, who claimed “attorney-client privilege” on the documents. The public defender told Judge Kirkman that the pages were written in response to a request she made of her client, defendant Jessica Lopez.

The pages were written in “cipher” or code, and were collected from the cell of Lopez, who is one of three persons charged with murdering Brittany Dawn Killgore. The victim was last seen leaving her apartment in April 2012, when she allegedly got into a car with one of the defendants, Louis Perez. The victim’s abused body was found four days later, on April 17, dumped alongside a road in a neighboring county.
This murder caused a stir in San Diego County because the victim was married to a Marine deployed to Afghanistan at the time, and defendant Louis Perez was an active-duty Marine when he was arrested.

Adding to the grotesque interest is prosecutor Patrick Espinoza’s assertions that the beautiful young woman was abducted as part of a sadomasochistic fantasy. The perverse lifestyle of the defendants was exposed during a preliminary hearing four months ago.

Louis Ray Perez, 46, and Dorothy Maraglino, 38, and Jessica Lopez, 26, all plead not guilty to charges of conspiracy and kidnap and torture and murder. The prosecutor is alleging “special circumstance” of murder-during-kidnap, against all three defendants, meaning all three could face the death penalty or life in prison without possibility of parole.
This afternoon the judge set November 14, 2013, as the next court date for all three defendants. It is expected that attorneys will have met with District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis by that time, this as part of the protocol for deciding whether or not to seek the death penalty, here. Meetings could also include other interested parties, such as the family of the victim.

In a separate motion, the attorney for defendant Louis Perez asked that Perez be transported to University of California San Diego for an eye exam. Public defender Jeff Reichert stated that Perez is far-sighted and has need of eye glasses, and that UCSD is contracted to service jail inmates for that need. This produced serious looks on the faces of the bailiffs in the courtroom, who are all San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies.

Suspects' 'sex dungeon' fetishes may have led to US Marine wife's killing - warrants

BY ELLIOT SPAGAT AND JULIE WATSON, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS JULY 19, 2012

SAN DIEGO - Three roommates with a "sex dungeon" at their home may have murdered a U.S. Marine's wife as they tried to satisfy their fetishes, investigators say in newly unsealed search warrants.

Detectives found "bondage type sex appratuses, toys and tools" at the home of the man and two women who have been charged with murder in the death of 22-year-old Brittany Killgore, whose body was found near a California lake. The warrants were unsealed Wednesday at the request of news organizations including The Associated Press.

Investigators believe all three suspects were with Killgore at their home north of San Diego shortly after the victim sent a text message to a friend, "Help."

Killgore was last seen April 13, three days after she filed for divorce from Lance Cpl. Cory Killgore, who was serving in Afghanistan at the time. The documents say her body was found with neck injuries consistent with strangulation, and marks on her wrist and leg that suggested someone tried to use a saw or other tool to dismember her.

A San Diego County sheriff's detective said in one affidavit that the trio may have targeted Killgore for their "unusual sexual fetishes." Louis Ray Perez and Dorothy Maraglino told authorities they were involved in "master, servant and slave role playing."

The third suspect, Jessica Lopez, said she strangled the victim, fearing the victim would upend a kinky sex ring by seducing her "Master," according to the warrants. Lopez wrote in a seven-page letter that she believed Killgore was trying to come between her, Perez and Maraglino. All three have pleaded not guilty.

Lopez, who calls Perez her "Master," shoulders full blame for the killing, saying she acted after the victim told her that she had a "whole night planned" with Perez, comments suggesting jealousy was a motive.

The documents give no indication that Killgore knew about the sex ring, and prosecutors call her an innocent victim. Detectives said she accepted Perez's invitation to a San Diego dinner cruise after Perez helped her move that afternoon. The warrants do not say how Killgore met the suspects.

Sloan Ostbye, Lopez's attorney, didn't immediately respond to a phone message Wednesday. She joined the San Diego County district attorney's office in an appeal to keep the documents sealed, calling much of her client's letter "false or at least misleading and possibly delusional."

All three defendants are being held on $3 million bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Aug. 21.
