A tense Washington standoff at an alleged murderer's hillside bunker has ended after a body, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, was found inside the hideout, police said.

Deputies said they were nearly certain the body is that of Peter Keller, 41, who was wanted on first degree murder and arson charges.

After a 22-hour standoff, SWAT team members used an explosive to blast through the roof of the heavily fortified hideout this afternoon, opening a space large enough for deputies to enter the bunker.

Once inside deputies discovered a body, which they said appeared to be Keller, and it appeared as though he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Sgt. Cindi West of the King County Sheriff's Office said.

Authorities are proceeding with caution due to the possibility the survivialist may have booby trapped his hideout, King County Sheriff Steven Strachand told ABC News.

Authorities had not seen Keller since they responded to a fire at his North Bend residence on Sunday. Inside, responders found the bodies of Keller's wife, Lynnettee Keller, 41, and daughter Kaylene, 19.

Sheriff's deputies were able to pinpoint the location of Keller's hiding place after they found photos of the bunker that he had intended to burn in his home. An enhanced picture revealed the North Bend Premium Outlets in the background, which led police to the Rattlesnake Ridge area.

Detectives found Keller's pickup truck at a trailhead and used trackers to follow footprints in the woods.

Keller is believed to have spent eight years planning and building his bunker, which was built 20 feet into a hillside. The two-level bunker included cement supports and multiple hatches for coming and going.

Keller stockpiled food and supplies in the bunker, police said. He had recently told a co-worker at a computer refurbishing store that he withdrew $6,200 from the bank and might not return to work.

Three dozen SWAT officers reached the bunker Friday after hiking through rugged terrain and undergrowth near the Rattlesnake Ridge trail in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains of Washington. Police helicopters made around 40 trips to drop SWAT team members in by rope.

Overnight, lights were seen flickering on and off from inside the bunker.

SWAT officers told West that photos of the bunker "don't do it justice."

"They said the fort appears to be amazingly fortified," she told The Associated Press during the standoff.

Authorities pumped tear gas into the bunker on Friday and heard movement inside but did not enter the structure.

Earlier today, a team of hostage negotiators were transported by helicopter to the site. The team from the King County Sheriff's Office had tried to establish contact with Keller through a bullhorn, West said.

Authorities had said they did not plan to make any big moves to storm the bunker, since they considered Keller to be armed and the heavily fortified hideout to be booby-trapped.

"It's a very extreme and tactical situation. Time is on our side. We're not going to do anything rash," Strachan said Friday.

The trail has been closed to the public until further notice, as police are still worried about possible booby traps and explosives in and around the bunker.

Paul Cooke, Keller's boss, said Keller was an "excellent employee."

"We're utterly blown away that this happened…excellent employee. I mean you can set your clock by him," Cooke said.

Peter Keller found dead at bunker as standoff ends

Associated Press
Saturday, April 28, 2012

Wash. - After a 22-hour standoff, police blew the top off a rugged mountain bunker near Seattle on Saturday and found their target - a man believed to be a murder suspect - dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities were working to positively identify the body as 41-year-old Peter Keller, who hasn't been seen since his wife and daughter were found shot to death last weekend, King County sheriff's Sgt. Katie Larson said.

Officers shouted warnings before blowing the roof, Larson said. The raid ended a tense week for law officers who tried to track down Keller, a gun enthusiast described by his family as having a "survivalist mentality."

"There's been a huge sigh of relief," Larson said. "Our people are out safe, and the trails are now safe for the community to use."

Keller spent eight years building the bunker into the side of Rattlesnake Ridge, police said. It was thoroughly camouflaged, heavily reinforced and had multiple levels. Photos of the inside of the bunker, released by the King County Sheriff's Office, showed a shelf full of ammunition boxes.

SWAT teams spent a grueling seven hours on the mountainside Friday morning, crawling over dangerously steep terrain slick with mud from recent rains, before they found the bunker. SWAT officers who kept watch on it through Friday night said they saw lights going on and off, and they believed its occupant had everything necessary to remain inside for a long time - including a generator, food, gas mask, bullet-resistant vest and many guns.

Photographs found in Keller's home after the killings gave authorities an idea of where it was; in one picture that they enhanced, detectives could make out buildings in nearby North Bend. Combined with reports from hikers who remembered seeing his faded red pickup at the Rattlesnake Ridge trailhead, the sheriff's office sent experienced trackers to the area, where they found off-trail boot prints confirming their belief that he was somewhere on the ridge.

An arrest warrant issued Wednesday accuses Keller of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree arson; the home was set on fire after Keller's wife and daughter were shot. The King County medical examiner determined Kaylene Keller, 18, and her mother, Lynnettee Keller, 41, both died from gunshots to the head.

Body Found After Bunker Is Stormed
By MATT FLEGENHEIMER
Published: April 28, 2012

Authorities in Washington State blew open a survivalist bunker on Saturday to find what they believe to be the body of a man suspected of killing his wife and daughter — the culmination of a lengthy manhunt that drove officers into the sludge-packed foothills of the Cascade Mountains.

Since Friday afternoon, SWAT officers in King County had surrounded the elaborate, underground structure where they believed the man, Peter Keller, 41, had gone into hiding. Mr. Keller is suspected of killing his wife and 18-year-old daughter, then setting his house ablaze last weekend and retreating into a bunker he began constructing in 2004, the authorities said.

Around 10 a.m. on Saturday, officers found a body inside with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. “We believe it to be Keller,” Sgt. Katie Larson of the King County Sheriff’s Office said in a telephone interview.

On April 22, Sergeant Larson said, a fire at Mr. Keller’s home in North Bend, Wash., east of Seattle, led responders to the bodies of his wife and daughter, who had both been shot to death.

Mr. Keller tried to burn the house down, but was unsuccessful, Sergeant Larson said, allowing authorities to recover a hard drive with photographs. They discovered one grainy image that appeared to have come from the bunker, which authorities believe Mr. Keller had been working on for eight years, Sergeant Larson said. A detective enhanced the photograph, Sergeant Larson said, then used triangulation to estimate where the bunker might be situated.

Interviews with people who said they had seen Mr. Keller’s pickup truck parked near the head of the trail, at Rattlesnake Ridge, also helped lead authorities to the correct location, Sergeant Larson said. But officers, fearing that Mr. Keller was armed and that the bunker could be outfitted with traps, did not enter right away. Authorities traded shifts over nearly a full day, sloshing across the slick, steep terrain outside the bunker.

“It’s mud, it’s rain, it’s felled trees,” Sergeant Larson said.

Police blow Wash. mountain bunker, find man dead
By GENE JOHNSON and TED WARREN | Associated Press – 1 hr 30 mins ago

NORTH BEND, Wash. (AP) — Peter Keller spent eight years carving his hole in the side of the mountain, camouflaging the rugged underground bunker with ferns and sticks and stocking it with a generator and ammunition boxes sealed in Ziploc bags. Suspected in the deaths of his wife, daughter and pets last weekend, he headed there prepared for the long haul with high-powered rifles, scope and body armor.

Seattle-area tactical officers who slogged for hours over dangerously steep, muddy ground to find him were prepared too. They pumped in tear gas, called for him over bullhorns, and, after 22 hours, set off explosives along the top of the bunker Saturday.

Keller was inside, already dead of a self-inflicted gunshot. A handgun was next to his body.

The 41-year-old hadn't been seen since his wife, Lynnettee, and 18-year-old daughter Kaylene were found shot dead in their home last weekend.

The raid ended a tense week for law enforcement officials who tried to track down Keller, a gun enthusiast described by his family as having a "survivalist mentality." That Keller was likely armed and on the loose in an extremely popular hiking and mountain-biking area east of Seattle kept many people on edge.

"The gas didn't work, we've got fresh people here, it was time to take the next step," said King County Sheriff's Sgt. Katie Larson. "There's been a huge sigh of relief. Our people are out safe, and the trails are now safe for the community to use."

The bunker, tucked into Rattlesnake Ridge, was "amazingly fortified" with at least 13 guns inside, propane tanks, a large gun scope, gas cans and binoculars, said sheriff's Sgt. Cindi West. Photos released by police showed stacks of ammunition in plastic bags on shelves.

SWAT teams spent a grueling seven hours in the Cascade Mountains foothills Friday morning, virtually crawling over terrain slick with mud from recent rains, before they found the bunker. A number of officers were treated intravenously for dehydration, and one broke his ankle, said sheriff's Sgt. Cindi West.
The officers appeared exhausted, their faces smeared with camouflage paint, as they rode down the mountain in sport-utility vehicles or armored carriers to be replaced by fresher teams.

SWAT officers who kept watch on the bunker through Friday night said they saw lights going on and off, and they believed its occupant had everything necessary to remain inside for a long time — including a generator, food, gas mask, bullet-resistant vest and guns.

Photographs found in Keller's home after they found his wife and daughter gave authorities an idea of where it was; in one picture that they enhanced, detectives could make out buildings in nearby North Bend.

Combined with reports from alert hikers who remembered seeing his faded red pickup truck at the Rattlesnake Ridge trailhead, the sheriff's office sent experienced trackers to the area, where they found off-trail boot prints confirming their belief that he was somewhere on the ridge.

They could smell smoke from its woodstove before they found it.

Authorities pumped tear gas into the structure Friday, but it failed to flush the man out, either because it didn't penetrate deep enough into the structure or because the person had a gas mask.

Court documents described Keller as a loner who has a survivalist mentality and has been stockpiling supplies in the woods.

An arrest warrant issued Wednesday accuses Keller of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree arson; the home was set on fire after Lynnettee Keller, 41 and Kaylene were shot in the head.

Their bodies were found in their bedrooms April 23. The family cat and dog were also killed.

The fire at Keller's home was stopped before the house burned down, and authorities said they found seven gasoline cans placed in different areas of the home.
Kaylene's boyfriend told detectives that Peter Keller had shown him his gun collection and several large-caliber rifles and handguns, court documents said.
The boyfriend, who was not identified, said Kaylene had told him her father took long hikes on the weekends and was stockpiling supplies at a fort in the woods.

Peter Keller withdrew $6,200 from a bank last week and told one of his co-workers at a computer refurbishing store in Preston that he might not return, according to court documents.
