SUNDERLAND - There is an outpouring of support and sympathy on the social media website Facebook in response to the death of a woman and child whose bodies were found in the trunk of a car north of Sunderland Saturday.

Durham Regional Police made the grisly discovery after a resident called about an abandoned car near a farmer’s field on Ridge Road.

Now, Barrie resident Andy Daviau is having a tough time coming to grips with the news that he’s likely lost another close friend.

Daviau, who knew Alexandra Flanagan, believes the mom and child found dead in the trunk of a car in Sunderland Saturday were part of his group of friends.

“We are all in extreme shock. There are a lot of questions we as all her friends are looking for (answers to),” said Daviau.

Police say they know the identity of the woman and her child, but had not yet released their names and ages.

Friends of the deceased are saying she’s a Barrie woman.

According to friends of the victim who are posting to a Facebook page, the woman left her home to travel to Orillia where she was to meet up with family and friends for a birthday celebration. She never arrived.
The bodies were discovered in a field on Ridge Road, about halfway between Concession 7 and Highway 7. The field can be seen clearly by motorists travelling along Hwy. 12, just west of the scene.

Police are seeking the public's help in learning more about the woman in the hours prior to her death and stress they're not "actively seeking" any suspects, pending the outcome of the autopsies conducted Sunday.

Daviau said he last saw his friend at the November vigil for Alexandra Flanagan. “She told me she still had the necklace that I gave her when we were teenagers. It was small things like this that she would do that made you feel good,” said Daviau.

Daviau encouraged anyone with information about the mysterious deaths to call Det.-Sgt. Allan of the Durham Regional Police homicide unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5400.

Friends grieve after mother and child found dead in car trunk

Autopsy planned for mother, child found dead in car trunk

Friends and family are struggling with grief, after learning the woman and child found in a trunk north of Sunderland Saturday are Andrea Damude and her son Brock.

“When I found out I didn't want to believe it at all. I got the call from her cousin. I was like ‘Okay whatever, the jokes over this isn't funny.’ She started bawling on the phone to me. I said ‘Oh my god, this is happening,” said friend Andy Daviau.

Around 11 a.m., a resident noticed Damude’s white Ford Taurus in a farmer’s field north of Sunderland, Ont., and called police.

“Just the thought of them in the trunk like that. With her and her baby,” Daviau said, choking up.

Damude marked her 37th birthday this past Friday. She and her eight-month-old son were headed to Orillia to celebrate with family.

A post-mortem exam completed Monday was inconclusive. Further testing will be done to determine the cause of death for both Andrea and Brock.

“I almost fainted when I heard it. Seeing the pictures of her with Brock, you could see the love in her eyes,” said Daviau.

“She was a go-getter. She was a tough cookie.”

Damude lived in Pembroke, Ont. with her husband.

Damude’s death is a haunting reminder for Daviau. In 2007, he and Damude said goodbye to mutual friend Alexandra Flanagan. Barrie native Flanagan disappeared July 8, 2007, before police began to turn up her body parts in different areas of the city.

“Andrea was really good friends with Alex, she was behind us the whole way when we were fighting for Alex. And now we're doing the same thing for her,” said Daviau.

He’s opened up a Facebook page to memorialize Damude, and receive tips on her case.

A woman and her young son whose bodies were found in the trunk of a car abandoned northeast of Toronto over the weekend have been identified as Andrea and Brock Damude.

Andrea Damude's Facebook profile shows a doting mother who posted pregnancy photos and, later, updates about her eight-month-old son's teething troubles and her upcoming birthday.

"My poor baby is teething and so miserable," Damude wrote earlier this month.

Then, last week, she wrote about her upcoming birthday.

"My birthday is on Friday and all I wish is for one night of undisturbed sleep," she wrote.

Damude's body, and that of her son, was found on Saturday, one day after her birthday, in Sunderland, Ont., a small community about 100 kilometres northeast of Toronto.

CTV Toronto's Tamara Cherry has confirmed that autopsies will continue on Monday.

After the bodies were discovered, Durham Regional Police said post-mortem tests may help them figure out how the pair died.

A resident had called police after noticing a white, abandoned car in a farmer's field. When officers arrived, they found the bodies in the trunk.

Durham Regional Police said they are not seeking any suspects at this time.

BARRIE, Ont. -- Friends and family are devastated after learning of the deaths of Andrea Damude and her eight-month-old son, Brock, whose bodies were found in the trunk of a car northeast of Toronto.

The former Barrie woman was returning to the area from her home in Pembroke, Ont., to celebrate her birthday March 9.

Durham Regional Police were still searching for clues Monday, trying to figure out how the young woman and her son ended up in the trunk of her white Ford Taurus in a farmer's field just north of Sunderland, Ont., on Saturday.

Police have not officially released the names of the deceased, (yes, the Have!) but her friends on Facebook are grappling with the loss of their friend and mourning the death of the son she tried so hard to conceive.

“They had tried and tried to have a child. This baby was a blessing to them,” said friend Andy Daviau, who said he's known Damude for more than 20 years.

He met her new husband, Brett Damude, last fall.

“We don't understand this. We're all devastated. All of this group of friends to go through this again is just awful.”

Daviau said the last time he saw Damude was during her visit last November to attend the vigil for her good friend, Alexandra Flanagan, who was reported missing in July 2007.

Over a four-year period, her skeletal remains were found scattered around Barrie.

Last October, Barrie police arrested Andrew Keene, 29, of Innisfil, Ont., and shortly after discovered more remains.

“We don't know what to think now,” said Daviau, his voice breaking. “It's got to stop.”

The mother and her son's bodies were found in the car in a field on Ridge Road, about halfway between Concession 7 and Hwy. 7, north of Sunderland.

The field is visible by from Hwy. 12, just west of the scene.

Nearby resident Patricia Martin said police were called Saturday around 11 a.m. about the car's odd location in the farmer's field off the quiet sideroad.

“I don't know how long it was there because it's not one of the main thoroughfares,” Martin said.

Durham police are awaiting autopsy results and have not confirmed the time of death or how the young mother and son died.

Damude's parents, Barrie residents Peter and Kathy Hissa, were unable to comment Monday.

Friends believe Damude and her son were on their way to Barrie to celebrate her 37th birthday with friends and family.

Megan Allinson said she met Damude in 2006 when they worked together at the Crossovers Entertainment Lounge on Dunlop Street West in Barrie.

Allinson said Damude met her husband at the bar when he was stationed at CFB Borden and said the couple moved to Pembroke when he was transferred to CFB Petawawa. She said five friends, including herself and Damude, had babies around the same time last year.

Struggling with her memories of the happy, new mother, Allinson said she's still trying to come to terms with their deaths.

“I don't know what happened, I just know she loved life, loved her little boy and loved her husband,” Allinson said. “And she had lots of friends who loved her.”

At the farm that night, Staff-Sgt. Tim Maw told reporters there was no obvious signs of trauma and the farm's owner had no idea who owned the abandoned car.

Durham police are seeking the public's assistance with any information related to Damude's activities and plans leading up to the time the bodies were discovered.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det.-Sgt. Allan at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5400.

Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or at durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca.

Friends setting up memorials for dead mom and son
By CHERYL BROWNE, QMI Agency

BARRIE, Ont. - Alexa Kyrzakos drove to a field where Andrea Damude, 37, and her eight-month-old son, Brock, were found to lay flowers in their memory.

The mother and child were found dead in the trunk of Andrea's car on the weekend.

“I can't just sit around thinking about it all the time," Kyrzakos said. "I'm still in denial.”

Kyrzakos is one of the many friends who are setting up makeshift memorials - either at the farmer's field where Damude and her son were found or on the Internet where scores of tributes are pouring in by the hour.

Police have yet to confirm the identifies of the bodies and the results of the autopsy, indicating that more forensic testing must be completed to determine the causes of death, Ashling Murphy said.

“We're continuing the forensic testing today," she said.

Murphy said police aren't ready to release the identities. However, friends have confirmed Andrea Damude (nee Hissa) and her son were on their way to the Barrie area to celebrate Damude's birthday last Friday from their new home in Pembroke, but never made it.

Instead, residents near the field noticed a white car parked there Saturday morning and called police.

Damude and her son were found in the trunk of her white 2003 Ford Taurus.

Friends said Damude was a doting mother and wouldn't harm the baby. But several have said she had been suffering through many sleepless nights since he was born, and was feeling homesick from her friends and family, all of whom are located in Barrie.

“She was going to her parents' house, she always went there first,” Kyrzakos said. “I think all she wanted for her birthday was a good night's sleep.”

Friends of dead Barrie mom need to grieve

SUNDERLAND - A woman and her son were found dead in the trunk of a vehicle north of Sunderland.

BARRIE - Friends of Andrea Damude, a woman found dead in the trunk of her car Saturday morning, say they need space to grieve her loss.

Durham Regional Police were called to a farmer’s field on Ridge Road in Sunderland on March 10 around 11 a.m. after someone noticed a white sedan abandoned there.

Inside the trunk, officers found the bodies of Damude and her eight-month-old son Brock.

Her friends said the woman, who grew up in Barrie and was living in Pembroke at the time, was on her way to Orillia to celebrate her birthday with friends and family.
She never arrived.

An autopsy was done Sunday but by Tuesday, officers said more forensic evidence would still be needed to determine the cause of death.

Durham police reported no obvious injuries to the bodies and detectives are not currently seeking any suspects. They are however still conducting interviews to trace Damude’s movements before her death.

With little information being released by police, there is speculation that no foul play was involved in the case.
“The homicide unit is still leading it, but we haven’t called it a homicide officially because we’re still taking a look at what it is,” said a Durham police spokesperson Tuesday.

Police still hadn’t officially released the names of the deceased, out of out of courtesy and respect for the family, said a press release.

Damude’s friends are still struggling to figure out what happened to her on that drive home.

Andy Daviau had known Damude for more than 20 years and was shocked when he heard the news over the weekend.

Adding to the grief is the fact that this is the second friend Daviau has lost to tragedy.

He and Damude also grew up with Alexandra Flanagan, who went missing in July 2007. Some of Flanagan’s remains were found that October, and more in 2008.
In November 2011, Barrie police arrested Innisfil’s Andrew Keene and charged him with first-degree murder and performing an indignity to a body in the case.

Keen is back in court today (Thursday) for a pretrial hearing.

But after asking for friends to assist police earlier in the week, Daviau now said it’s time to step back to grieve.
“We are pleading with the media to please understand and give the family their space now,” said Daviau in a joint statement by the administrators of the Friends of Alex Take Action Facebook page.

“We need to get this all sorted out and to rest. We are asking that everybody please give the family some space and let them deal with this tragic loss.”

The statement also says if public assistance is needed to advance the police case in any way, Damude’s friends would step in to help.

How could foul play not be involved? Did the mother take something and then either kill her child and/or give her whatever she took, then sauntered over to the trunk, got in, closed it and died?? I highly doubt it!

Two bodies found in field north of Sunderland

DURHAM -- It could be weeks before investigators determine the cause of death of a woman and child found in the trunk of a car in north Durham.

Forensic testing continues in the case of Andrea Damude and her infant son Brock, whose bodies were discovered near Sunderland March 10, police say.

"They're not expecting anything for four to six weeks," Durham police spokeswoman Ashling Murphy said Monday. "They're expecting forensic testing to take that long."

Although Durham's homicide unit is handling the case, the deaths haven't been deemed murders. Police said last week they're not actively seeking suspects.

An autopsy conducted the day after the bodies were discovered didn't point to a definitive cause of death for Ms. Damude and the child, police said last week. More extensive testing is being conducted as the investigation continues.

The bodies of Ms. Damude and her son were found after a resident contacted police about an apparently abandoned vehicle in a field on Ridge Road.

Ms. Damude, of Pembroke, was believed to be travelling to the Barrie area on the weekend she and her son were found dead.

Mom and baby, Andrea Damude and her son Brock, found dead in trunk/Update: 10/12/12 - LE states NO Foul Play. Empty Investigation continues into death of mother, child/No word from police on cause of death

Post by Wrapitup Tue Jun 05, 2012 11:47 pm

Durham police are close to wrapping up their investigation into the deaths of a mother and infant son whose bodies were found near Sunderland back in March.

Investigators waited more than two months for test results from the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto to determine a cause of death for Barrie native Andrea Damude and her eight-month-old son, Brock. While those test results have been received, police won't be releasing any information for another few weeks.

"Test results have been received but the investigation is still ongoing," said police spokesperson David Selby.

At the time of their death, media reports stated that Ms Damude and the child had left their home in Pembroke, Ont., and were expected to visit friends in Orillia to celebrate her 37th birthday. They never arrived.

Their bodies were discovered on March 10 in the trunk of their car, abandoned in a farmer's field on Ridge Road.

Although Durham's homicide unit continues to handle the case, the deaths haven't been deemed murders and no suspects have been sought.

'There was nothing obvious at the scene that would indicate a cause of death," said Sergeant Nancy Van Rooy.

"These kind of cases generally fall into three categories -- murder, suicide or death by misadventure. We still don't know what we're dealing with."

Durham regional police have ruled out foul play in the death of a mother and infant found in the trunk of a car earlier this year.

The bodies of Andrea Damude and her eight-month-old son Brock were found north of Sunderland, Ont., on March 10.

Police said Friday there was no evidence the pair was abducted or forced into the trunk of the vehicle, or that they were killed by someone else.

Damude had just turned 37 and was on her way to Orillia to celebrate with family, a family friend told CityNews at the time.

Damude was good friends with Alexandra Flanagan and helped in the search for Flanagan when she went missing. Flanagan, a hairstylist, was 33 when she disappeared on July 8, 2007.

Her body parts were found in different areas of Barrie.

Andrew Keene, 29, of Innisfil, Ont., was arrested and charged with first-degree murder on Oct. 20, 2011.

Excuse me, but I find this Very hard to believe that there was NO foul play. Are they saying this young mother climbed into the trunk w/her 8 mo old son and died w/out any type of foul play??? I don't buy it. I also find it interesting that Andrea "helped in the search for Flanagan when she went missing" whose body parts were eventually found. my 2 cents

DURHAM -- A woman found dead in the trunk of her car with her infant son last spring in north Durham Region committed suicide, police confirmed Friday.

The finding confirms earlier assertions by Durham police that the death of Andrea Damude, 37, did not involve foul play. Her eight-month-old son Brock died with her.

Medical and forensic examinations revealed no evidence the woman was abducted or forced into the trunk of the car, or that her death came at the hands of others, police said.

"The investigators believe this incident to be a tragic event with the mother willingly entering the trunk of the vehicle with the child, which is consistent with her committing suicide," the police statement said.

The bodies of Ms. Damude and her son were found inside their vehicle, which was parked in a field east of the intersection of Highways 7 and 12 on March 10, 2012.

Ms. Damude, of Pembroke, was on her way to celebrate her birthday in Orillia but never arrived, according to reports at the time of the incident.

By Cheryl Browne, Barrie Examiner
Friday, October 12, 2012 9:03:19 EDT PM

Andrea Damude, 37, and her eight-month-old son, Brock, were found dead in the trunk of Damude’s car on March 10 in a field near Sunderland, north of Uxbridge.
SUNDERLAND - Durham Regional police have determined the death of a Barrie woman and her child was a murder-suicide.

Andrea Damude, 37, and her eight-month-old son, Brock, were found dead in the trunk of Damude’s car on March 10 in a field near Sunderland, north of Uxbridge.

The Barrie native and her infant were on their way to Barrie to celebrate Damude’s birthday and visit with family from their new home in Petawawa, but didn’t arrive on the Friday night as expected.

Police say forensic examinations have been completed on Damude and her son. Authorities say they found no evidence the pair were abducted, forced into the trunk of the vehicle and/or murdered.

“(We) believe this incident to be a tragic event with the mother willingly entering the trunk of the vehicle with the child, which is consistent with her committing suicide,” Durham Regional police homicide investigator Det. Sgt. J.J. Allan said in a news release issued Friday.

The bodies of Damude and her son were found when Sunderland residents noticed a white car parked in a farmer’s field on March 10 and called police.

They were found in the trunk of her white 2003 Ford Taurus.

At the time of her death, friends had said Damude was a doting mother and wouldn’t harm the baby. But several friends also noted that she had been suffering through many sleepless nights since he was born, and was feeling homesick from her friends and family, all of whom were located in Barrie.

Damude’s husband, Brett, had followed his wife and son to the highway as he was on the way to visit his parents in the Strathroy area, west of London.

According to a media source in Strathroy, Brett was a private in the army who had done a tour in Afghanistan four years ago. As a transport driver for the Canadian Forces, Damude survived hitting an improvised explosive device, and temperatures that soared up into the 50 Celsius.

Based originally at CFB Borden, Brett was posted two years ago to CFB Petawawa, northwest of Ottawa.

I am sorry to harp on this but none of it makes sense. She was on her way to celebrate HER birthday. Her husband had followed her to the hiway. So then what? Did he lose track of her? If so, did he try texting or calling her? Did she have a cell phone w/her? Why would she pull over in a field and climb in w/her baby? This is crazy!! This article states she was depressed as she missed her friends in Barrie..well, that's where she was headed..to her Friends. And, the "sleepless nights"? She had a baby..who doesn't have sleepless nights.

What does her husband serving in Afghanistan have to do w/any of this????? thinking

I believe LE has completely dropped the ball on this horrible tragedy. She could have had car trouble and someone stopped and killed them. And again, what was the cause of death?? And, "murder/suicide"? How did she allegedly murder her son? How did she die? If I were her family, I would not allow them to close this case!

Durham police confirmed Friday the body of a woman and her baby found in the trunk of a car near Sunderland, Ont., in March was a case of murder-suicide.

Andrea Damude and her 8-month-old baby, Brock, were discovered in the trunk of an abandoned white vehicle on a Saturday afternoon.

“Investigators believe this incident to be a tragic event with the mother willingly entering the trunk of the vehicle with the child,” Durham police said on Friday.

Months before the incident, Damude had expressed her frustrations online about sleepless nights she had while her baby stayed awake.

“Pissed, frustrated, soooo upset . . . need a break . . . losing it,” she wrote one morning on Facebook.

“I love my baby boy . . . but I really need a break from these 4 a.m. mornings.”

Evidently, her husband was overseas and she was basically a single mother and her friends were in another city so I can see why she would be tired but don't believe she took her or her son's life.

New mom found dead with her baby in Sunderland posted about joys and struggles of parenthood on

In the week before Andrea Damude and her baby were found dead in the trunk of a car, she was doing what she always did — posting about her little guy on Facebook.

Damude was the kind of mom who shared parenting stories with her friends: the homemade baby food, the sleepless nights, the fact she loved her son more than anything. She posted pictures of Brock in a Jolly Jumper, on Santa’s knee, and in an orange Halloween outfit, each eliciting glowing remarks from friends about the baby’s angelic face, beautiful blue eyes and big smile.

Brock had recently turned 8 months old. He was crawling, but still keeping Damude up through the night. She didn’t sugar-coat the frustration. On March 7, she was “dying for a full night’s sleep!” and remarked, “He just wants to be cuddled! I don’t mind. But every two hrs . . . ugh! He was doing so well before only waking twice a night.”

Friends believe the Pembroke mom was planning to return to the Barrie area for her birthday this past weekend, but she never arrived.

Instead, she and her baby were discovered inside the trunk of an abandoned white car in the Sunderland area on Saturday afternoon. Was the car hers? If she was in the trunk, it was NOT "abandoned."

Durham police reported no obvious injuries to the bodies and detectives are not seeking any suspects yet. Police said they would have more information pending the results of further forensic testing. They are conducting interviews to trace Damude’s movements before her death.

“The homicide unit is still leading it, but we haven’t called it a homicide officially because we’re still taking a look at what it is,” said a Durham police spokesman.

While family declined to comment and authorities aren’t releasing any more details, the posts on Damude’s Facebook page provide insight to the struggles she faced as a new mom.

At the end of November, amid sleepless nights, she wished for moments alone to “get a grip and breathe.” In capital letters, she posted that “no joke,” she was going to “snap” because her baby was not sleeping again.

The next day, at 5:19 a.m., she posted another update:

“pissed, frustrated, soooo upset . . . need a break . . . losing it. But I love my baby boy . . . but I really need a break from these 4 a.m. mornings. It doesn’t matter what time he goes to bed early or late it’s 4 a.m. on the dot!!! And I can’t keep up!!!”

Friends and family offered advice and assurance. One suggested Damude hire a nurse to catch up on her sleep, but she said it was “too expensive.” She lamented that her baby didn’t nap when his father, who serves in the military, was away on course.

In early December, she told friends she was going to her hometown of Barrie for a week because she needed “some help from my mom and doctors.”

In early March, she posted she had “the best husband in the world, taking care of Brock while mommy takes one of her sleeping betty’s and has a long deserved nap. Ruff night of teething. Ugh!”

Brock was getting bigger and had also started to crawl — perfectly, the proud mom noted.

Dr. Simone Vigod, a psychiatrist with the Reproductive Life Stages Program at Women’s College Hospital, said it is extremely hard to interpret people’s meanings from an email or a web page. Speaking in general terms, she said a substantial number of women experience “baby blues” after birth, marked by transient feelings of sadness and increased sensitivity. Up to 15 per cent of women experience postpartum depression. Vigod said symptoms are a low or sustained mood, loss of interest, anxiety, difficulties with sleep, and “scary, intrusive thoughts.” Being unable to sleep when the baby sleeps can perpetuate symptoms and impair functioning, she said.

“The bottom line is helping women understand that this isn’t necessarily something they need to suffer through in the postpartum,” she said. “Though some element of emotionality is relatively common, if it’s sustained, if it impairs function, if it has severe symptoms associated with it, then it’s not normal, and it very well may be depression and very well might require treatment.”

No cause of death has been released. While friends and family members wait for more details, anyone with new information is asked to contact Det. Sgt. J.J. Allan of the Durham Region police homicide unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5400.

I just hope her family raises all kinds of hell to keep this case open. We all know LE w/deem a case "undetermined" or "suicide" (look at Kathleen Savio) and it's simply untrue! I wish NG or someone in a high media position (hate to say it but NG has clout) eyerolling would grab this case and run w/it.

Wrap, you are absolutely right. While it's true that some mothers have lost it and killed their children, I don't think they would do it in a trunk. There is not enough room and it smells back there.

How can LE say it's not murder when they don't even know the cause of death? Maybe they are playing mind games with the killer?

I doubt they have a "killer" in mind. I think they did a sloppy job and instead of Doing their job to the fullest, just deemed it a suicide and closed the case. The family needs to raise holy hell!

raine said I am sorry to harp on this but none of it makes sense.

If I were her family, I would not allow them to close this case! angry

Deaths of mother, infant deemed murder-suicide

Andrea Damude was driving across Ontario with her 8-month-old son Brock

CBC News Posted: Oct 22, 2012 4:36 PM ET Last Updated: Oct 22, 2012 5:54 PM ET

The deaths of an Ottawa area mother and infant were a murder-suicide, according to a news release from police northeast of Toronto.

Andrea Damude and Brock Damude were found dead in the trunk of a sedan in March northeast of Toronto.
Andrea Damude, 37, and her eight-month-old son Brock of Petawawa, Ont., were found dead in the trunk of a sedan on March 10 in Sunderland, Ont., about 95 km northeast of Toronto.

Forensic tests were recently completed and investigators say there was no evidence the mother and son were abducted or forced into the trunk by another person.

Investigators also say they believe the deaths were "a tragic event with the mother willingly entering the trunk of the vehicle with the child," according to the Durham police news release.

The mother and son were living in Petawawa, about 140 km northwest of Ottawa, and they were headed to Orillia, Ont., for Damude's 37th birthday.

The husband and father, Brett Damude, is a soldier based at CFB Petawawa and has toured in Afghanistan.

Police have now closed the investigation.

I just find it odd that this is being considered a murder suicide. And like everyone else want to know the COD!

"Forensic tests were recently completed and investigators say there was no evidence the mother and son were abducted or forced into the trunk by another person."
Exactly what kind of evidence would be left behind if someone had forced her into the trunk with her child? It's easy enough not to leave fingerprints if some piece of material was used over the hand. If Andrea did close the trunk lid down on herself were her fingerprints lifted from that particular surface inside? It's sad that LE decided that because she was feeling depressed she was also suicidal. IMO the 2 don't always go hand in hand.

I'm trying to find out more information about this car, but the only thing I can find is that it was an abandoned white sedan. Does anyone know what the make and model is?
