A man accused of fatally shooting his 1-year-old son and critically injuring another boy in a South Texas motel was charged Wednesday with capital murder.

Demond Bluntson, 36, was also charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant and one count of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, Laredo police spokesman Joe Baeza said in a statement. Bluntson was being held without bond.

Police say Bluntson shot and killed his 21-month-old son Davian and shot and wounded 6-year-old Jaydin in a Laredo hotel room on Tuesday. Jaydin was on life support at a San Antonio hospital Wednesday, Baeza said.

Bluntson could face more charges in El Campo, some 200 miles away, where police believe Bluntson killed his girlfriend, the boys' mother, before leaving for Laredo. Becky Ivy, a legal assistant in the Wharton County district attorney's office, said an investigation was ongoing and that there would be no immediate comment on possible charges.

El Campo police Chief Terry Stanphill said earlier Wednesday that police had confirmed a body found a day earlier was that of 28-year-old Brandy Cerny. He was awaiting a preliminary autopsy report, but said that Cerny's body also showed evidence of gunshot wounds.

A neighbor found Cerny's body in a building on a property in El Campo where Bluntson used to keep dogs, Stanphill said. Cerny was last seen with her sons at church in El Campo on Sunday. Her father reported her missing Monday morning and investigators traced a lead to Laredo.

Baeza said police went to the hotel about midday Tuesday after receiving a call from El Campo police, saying the family might be in trouble.

The desk clerk directed officers to a room on the 14th floor, where they knocked, identified themselves as police and immediately heard several shots, Baeza said. One shot came through the room door and narrowly missed two officers, he said.

Police cleared the building, which was packed with people attending a convention, then entered the room and arrested Bluntson.

The toddler was declared dead at the scene, while his 6-year-old brother was hospitalized in critical condition. Baeza said Wednesday morning police know of no change in the 6-year-old's condition.

Prior to that discovery, family members were already reeling from the attack on the boys.

"We're all extremely distraught," Cerny's aunt Dianne Cerny told The Associated Press. "Brandy is a bright, beautiful woman, and the boys were both absolutely delightful."

Dianne Cerny said family members last saw Brandy Cerny and her boys at church Sunday morning. The close-knit family had gathered the night before to celebrate Father's Day, she said.

Normal Brandy Cerny's Body Found: Demond Bluntson Already In Jail For Allegedly Shooting Her Two Kids

Post by Wrapitup on Thu Jun 21, 2012 12:14 am

Brandy Cerny's body was found Wednesday. Her boyfriend is already under official scrutiny for allegedly shooting her two children, resulting in the death of a 1-year-old baby, on Tuesday.
EL CAMPO, Texas — A man accused of fatally shooting his 1-year-old son and critically injuring the boy's half-brother in a Texas hotel has so far stymied attempts to determine what triggered the violent spree by refusing to speak with investigators, police said Wednesday.

Demond Bluntson, 36, was charged with capital murder and aggravated assault in Laredo, where police say he shot the two boys. He could face yet more charges in El Campo, some 200 miles away, where police believe he killed his girlfriend – the boys' mother – and dumped her body at a property where his father lives.

"(Bluntson) still hasn't talked to law enforcement," El Campo police Chief Terry Stanphill said. Stanphill said he had sent an investigator to Laredo, but turned him around when police there said Bluntson wasn't talking.

Stanphill said a preliminary autopsy Wednesday determined that Bluntson's 28-year-old girlfriend, Brandy Cerny, likely died of multiple gunshot wounds. He said investigators have spoken to her family.

"The family has mentioned to us that they've had an on and off relationship, their ups and downs and some tough times," the chief said.

Cerny and her sons were last seen in church Sunday in El Campo. Her father reported her missing Monday morning after she did not show up for work. On Tuesday morning, El Campo police called their counterparts in Laredo to check on a lead that the family had checked into a Laredo Holiday Inn.

Laredo police said they later determined that only Bluntson and the boys checked into the hotel.

Officers knocked on their room door about midday Tuesday and immediately heard several gunshots, including one that just missed officers through the door.

Police say when they entered the room, they found Bluntson had shot and killed his 21-month-old son, Davian, and shot and wounded Davian's half-brother, 6-year-old Jaydin. The boys' mother's body was found hours later, in a green shack hidden among trees behind a small house and a mobile home, on an El Campo property where Bluntson's father lives.

Jaydin remained on life support at a San Antonio hospital Wednesday, Laredo police spokesman Joe Baeza said.

Becky Ivy, a legal assistant in the Wharton County district attorney's office, said an investigation into Cerny's death was ongoing and that there would be no immediate comment on possible charges.

Pastor Bonny Hargrove, 47, who lives across the street from Bluntson's father, said she last saw Bluntson about two weeks ago.

"He had his head on straight. He was staying out of trouble. He seemed to be upbeat. He was a person who was determined, wanted to work and take care of his family. I can't believe this happened," said Hargrove, who added that she's lived in the neighborhood for six years and would see and talk with Bluntson and his father every so often.

Hargrove said she'd heard about the couple's relationship problems and that they were no longer living together, but "to hear him talk about his family and then to hear about this, it's still unbelievable."

"It's a horrible thing," she said.

In addition to capital murder, Bluntson also was charged in Laredo with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant and one count of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, Baeza said in a statement. A judge set bond at a combined $2.5 million for the counts.

Vigil over wounded child continues after shootings

McALLEN, Texas — An all-night vigil continued Wednesday over a critically wounded 6-year-old boy, a day after his 21-month-old brother was shot dead in a South Texas hotel room and their mother was found dead hundreds of miles away.

Officers arrested Demond Bluntson, 36, at the Holiday Inn-Civic Center in Laredo and were holding him pending formal charges, Laredo Police spokesman Joe Baeza said. Baeza said police were consulting prosecutors about the charges.

Baeza said police went to the hotel about midday Tuesday after receiving a call from police in the family's hometown of El Campo, a city more than 200 miles northeast of Laredo, saying the family might be in some kind of trouble.

El Campo Police Chief Terry Stanphill said an El Campo resident discovered a woman's body hours later that is believed to be that of the children's mother and Bluntson's girlfriend, Brandy Cerny.

Police went to the hotel about midday after receiving a call from police in the family's hometown of El Campo, a city more than 200 miles northeast of Laredo, saying the family might be in some kind of trouble, Baeza said.

The desk clerk directed officers to a room on the 14th floor, where they knocked, identified themselves as police and immediately heard several shots, Baeza said. One shot came through the room door and narrowly missed two officers, he said.

Police cleared the building, which was packed with a convention, then entered the room and arrested Bluntson.

Police determined the boys' mother, Cerny, had not checked into the hotel.

Cerny's 21-month-old boy was declared dead at the scene, while her 6-year-old son was hospitalized, Baeza said.

Hours later an El Campo resident discovered a woman's body on a property that was not where the Cernys lived, said Stanphill.

"We believe it to be (Cerny's) body," Stanphill said. He said the body was found in an outbuilding on a property that was not the Cernys'. He declined to release additional details.

Cerny's aunt Dianne Cerny told The Associated Press that Bluntson is the father of younger boy, Davian. She said 6-year-old Jaydin remained on life support Tuesday evening.

Dianne Cerny said family members last saw Brandy Cerny and her boys at church Sunday morning. The close-knit family had gathered the night before to celebrate Father's Day, she said.

Normal Police: Texas hotel shooting suspect not talking

Post by Wrapitup on Thu Jun 21, 2012 7:39 am

A man accused of fatally shooting his 1-year-old son and critically injuring the boy's half-brother in a Texas hotel has so far stymied attempts to determine what triggered the violent spree by refusing to speak with investigators, police said Wednesday.

Demond Bluntson, 36, was charged with capital murder and aggravated assault in Laredo, where police say he shot the two boys. He could face yet more charges in El Campo, some 200 miles away, where police believe he killed his girlfriend _ the boys' mother _ and dumped her body at a property where his father lives.

Officers knocked on their room door about midday Tuesday and immediately heard several gunshots, including one that just missed officers through the door. I would assume when the police knocked on the hotel door, they also identified themselves and that is when Demond (perfect name for him) shot his children.

The investigation into her death continues but she was believed to have gunshot wounds.

Bluntson was also charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant and one count of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He was being held without bond.

The father was arrested at the Holiday Inn-Civic Center in Laredo. Police had gone to the hotel at midday on Tuesday after receiving a call from colleagues in El Campo concerned for Bluntson's son and his girlfriend son.

Police began an investigation on Monday when Miss Cerny's father Lloyd filed a missing person's report when she did not show up to work. Authorities followed several leads which led them to the Laredo hotel.

When officers knocked the door of the room on the 14th floor, they identified themselves as police and then heard several shots. One bullet came through the room door and narrowly missed two officers.

Her 21-month-old baby was declared dead at the scene while her six-year-old son was hospitalized.

Pro8News reported that Bluntson had checked into the hotel with the young boys using his girlfriend's credit card.
Holiday Inn management refused to comment on this allegation to MailOnline.

Normal Boy, 6, dies of wounds after Texas hotel shooting

Post by Wrapitup on Thu Jun 21, 2012 2:57 pm

CHRISTOPHER SHERMAN, Associated Press
Updated 11:18 a.m., Thursday, June 21, 2012

Bluntson's 21-month-old son Davian Bluntson was fatally shot in the Tuesday incident and a family member said Thursday, June 21, that Davian's stepbrother, Jaydin Thompson, died in a San Antonio hospital after being taken off life support. Bluntson could face more charges in El Campo, Texas, where police believe he killed his 28-year-old girlfriend, Brandy Cerny - the boys' mother - and dumped her body.

McALLEN, Texas (AP) — A 6-year-old boy has died after authorities say he was shot by his mother's boyfriend at a South Texas hotel in an attack that also killed his 1-year-old half-brother, a family member said Thursday.

Jaydin Thompson's great-aunt Dianne Cerny said the boy was taken off life support and died Wednesday evening. Cerny has been speaking on behalf of the family since the boys were shot Tuesday, the same day their mother's body was found hidden in a shack in their hometown.

Jaydin's 21-month-old half-brother, Davian Bluntson, died in the shooting in the Laredo hotel. Demond Bluntson, the younger boy's father, is charged with capital murder and aggravated assault in the attack. Laredo Police spokesman Joe Baeza said the assault charge likely will be upgraded after Jaydin's death.

Bluntson, 36, is being held on $2.5 million bond and could face yet more charges in El Campo where police believe he killed his 28-year-old girlfriend Brandy Cerny — the boys' mother — and dumped her body at a property where his father lives.

El Campo police Chief Stanphill said a preliminary autopsy determined Cerny likely died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Cerny and her sons were last seen in church Sunday in El Campo. Dianne Cerny said Davian loved playing and exploring, and described Jaydin as being just like his mother.

"He always had an arm around someone, especially his mom and little brother, and he was always laughing and smiling and loving life," she said Thursday. She said Jaydin's family had decided to donate the boy's tissue.

Brandy Cerny's father reported her missing Monday morning after she did not show up for work. El Campo police called their counterparts in Laredo the next day to check on a lead that the family had checked into a Laredo Holiday Inn.

Laredo police said they later determined only Bluntson and the boys had checked in. Officers knocked on their room door about midday Tuesday and immediately heard several gunshots.

Police say when they entered the room, they found Bluntson had shot and killed Davian and wounded Jaydin. Their mother's body was found hours later, in a green shack hidden among trees behind a small house and a mobile home, on an El Campo property where Bluntson's father lived.

Brandy Cerny's family described her as a compassionate and hard-working woman who had earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and was pursuing a master's.

"Brandy worked tirelessly as a single mother to give her sons every opportunity this world had to offer," Dianne Cerny said.

Dianne Cerny said her niece had ended her relationship with Bluntson, but there was "hardly a time when you saw Brandy without her precious sons."

"Our hearts are forever broken and we as a family speak out against domestic violence and ask that anyone who feels threatened seek the necessary help to break free," she said. "Brandy was in the process of breaking free."

Texas man charged in death of mom of slain boys
BY CHRISTOPHER SHERMAN
Associated Press

MCALLEN, TEXAS -- A Texas man accused of fatally shooting two boys, including his 1-year-old son, in a hotel room also was charged Thursday in their mother's killing.

Demond Bluntson, 36, already was being held in a Laredo jail when a judge in another county signed a murder warrant accusing him of killing his girlfriend, 28-year-old Brandy Cerny.

Wharton County District Attorney Josh McCown said the charge could be upgraded to capital murder, but the investigation into various aggravating factors was ongoing.

An aggravated assault charge against Bluntson in Laredo also was expected to be upgraded following the death of 6-year-old Jaydin Thompson in a San Antonio hospital.

Jaydin's great-aunt Dianne Cerny said the boy was taken off life support and died Wednesday evening. She has been speaking on behalf of the family since Jaydin and his 1-year-old half brother were shot Tuesday, the same day their mother's body was found 200 miles away hidden in a shack in their hometown.

The younger boy, Davian Bluntson, died in the shooting at the Laredo hotel. Demond Bluntson is charged with capital murder in his death. Bluntson is being held on $2.5 million bond.

What a horrible man to slaughter his family! He probably couldn't handle her wanting to break things off with him so he wiped her and her sons off the face of the world. I hope someone beats him to death in jail!

THE BACK STORY

June 17 - The last time Brandy Cerny and her children were seen together, they were with Demond Bluntson, leaving church on Sunday.

June 18 - On Monday morning, Cerny's father, Lloyd Cerny, filed a missing person's report after his daughter failed to show up for work at the Texana Center, a behavioral center in Columbus.

June 19 - On Tuesday afternoon, Jaydin and Devian were found with Bluntson in a Laredo hotel room. The 36-year-old El Campo man began shooting through the door of the hotel room on the 14th floor of the Holiday Inn-Civic Center when Laredo police arrived. Devian was found dead at the scene, and Jaydin died the next day in the hospital.

Cerny's body was found about 5 p.m. Tuesday in a field between the 700 and 800 blocks of Dunlap Street in El Campo.

A preliminary autopsy indicates she was shot and died at the scene.

Bluntson's motive is still unknown. He's being held in the Webb County Jail.

DONATIONS

Memorial donations to the family can be made to the Brandy Cerny and Children Memorial Fund at either the NewFirst National Bank or Prosperity Bank.

TAITON - A small and even smaller baby blue casket rested on either side of Brandy Cerny's pearly white one.

Mom was back beside her boys.

"Brandy, Jaydin and Devian - always together in life. There was hardly a time we saw Brandy without her precious sons," Brandy's aunt, Dianne Cerny said at their funeral. "Brandy, Jaydin and Devian - now together in death."

More than 300 people filled the St. John Catholic Church in Taiton on Monday to celebrate the lives of Cerny and her two sons, Jaydin Thompson and Devian Bluntson. Cerny had given her family 28 years "full of love, full of life, kindness and compassion," her aunt said. They had six years with Jaydin and a brief, but sweet, 21 months with Devian.

Cerny was found shot to death in her hometown of El Campo on June 19. Earlier that day, Devian died of a gunshot wound in a Laredo hotel. His big brother died the next day in a San Antonio hospital.

Demond Bluntson, Cerny's boyfriend and Devian's father, is charged in their deaths.

By Monday, Cerny's friends said they could still hear her laugh.

More than one person mentioned the laugh that echoed through the high school where Cerny graduated with honors. Cerny would go on to receive a bachelor's degree in psychology and was working on a master's degree.

"She got us in trouble plenty of days," her friend, Wykisha Bishop joked about her uncontrollable laugh. "I'm missing her laugh right now. I swear I heard it in my sleep the other night."

The El Campo Class of 2002 honored their classmate at Monday's funeral and offered to lend an ear, a shoulder, a hand to the Cerny family when they need it.

Meanwhile, Jaydin's cousin offered memories of the boy who was her best friend at grandma's house.

Kellen Dorotik, 7, always asked for Jaydin first thing during her frequent visits to grandma's. It was the same for Jaydin. Kellen talked about swimming with her cousin, about playing with his Christmas presents.

She couldn't repeat enough how much fun she and Jaydin had during their short time together.

"We had such a fun time, but Jaydin has passed away," Kellen said.

Jaydin's aunt spoke about his love for football, his rambunctious nature and his famous hugs.

Devian had some pretty great hugs, too, she said.

"Sweet and fragile, an innocent little Devy always had an extra sparkle in his eyes. He loved playing and exploring everything around him," the aunt said.

Friends and family accepted the Eucharist and recited the rosary in an eclectic, two-hour service sprinkled with soulful and passionate gospel music.

The crowd who crammed into the corners of the church 10 miles northwest of El Campo wore purple ribbons as a reminder of the domestic violence that claimed the young family. Purple happened to be Cerny's favorite color, said her friends, all donned in purple accessories.

The family used the opportunity to include a special prayer for domestic violence victims.

"We as a family speak out against domestic violence and ask any person who feels threatened to seek the necessary help to break free," Cerny's aunt said. "Brandy was in the process of breaking free."

An inmate held at the Zapata County Jail is transported to Laredo after being found unresponsive, but not just any inmate: the man arrested for the recent double murder at the Laredo Holiday Inn, 36 year old Demond Bluntson, back in June.

He was arrested after shooting two young boys in a room of the Holiday Inn. Both children would die, leading to two capital murder charges against Bluntson.

The Zapata County Sheriff confirms Bluntson was found unresponsive in his cell. He was immediately transferred to Laredo by ambulance, and taken to Laredo Medical

He is said to be in stable condition.

No word on what he may be suffering from.

We are told multiple deputies from Webb and Zapata County Sheriff’s departments were guarding him.

Bluntson is also charged with another count of murder for the death of the boys' mother.

Normal Bluntson Heads Back in Court

Post by Wrapitup on Wed Sep 26, 2012 1:50 pm

Story Created: Sep 26, 2012 at 12:39 PM CDT

The man accused of shooting and killing his two children inside Laredo's Holiday Inn will be back in court tomorrow.

Back on June 19th, law enforcement agents were called out to the hotel on San Bernardo where shots were heard coming from inside a room.

When police entered, they found Demond Bluntson's 6 year old son, Jayden Thompson, shot twice a point black range. He died two days later at a San Antonio hospital.

His one year old brother was also shot in the room and died at the scene.

36-year old Bluntson was arrested at the scene.

Tomorrow, Bluntson will face a judge as his attorney, Chief Public Defender Hugo Martinez, files with the state for a reduced bond.
"The law says that if you have not been indicted on a felony case and it's been 90 days since the date of incarceration, you're entitled to reasonable bond," says Martinez.

Meanwhile, the state is seeking to indict Bluntson for capital murder charges to the Grand Jury today.

In a statement from District Attorney Chilo Alaniz, he says, "The State is filing capital murder charges for the death of the two little boys and if the Grand Jury decides to indict, we will seek the death penalty."

Bluntson's attorney tells us even if the judge does grant a lower bond, it's unlikely he will be released because he's still being held on 'no' bond in Wharton County for his alleged killing of the boys' mother, Brandy Cerny.

Of course, we'll continue following the case.

Normal Prosecutors seek death slaying of 2 children

LAREDO, Texas (AP) - Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for a Texas man accused of fatally shooting two boys in a Laredo hotel room.

A Webb County grand jury indicted Demond Bluntson on two capital murder counts Wednesday in the deaths of his 1-year-old son, Davian, and Davian's 6-year-old brother, Jayden Thompson. District Attorney Chilo Alaniz says Bluntson's is the first death penalty prosecution since 1991 in the county on the Texas-Mexico border.

Bluntson also has been charged in Wharton County in the slaying of the children's mother, 28-year-old girlfriend Brandy Cerny in El Campo.

Police say Bluntson shot both boys in a Laredo hotel room June 19 after police arrived. Cerny's body was found with multiple gunshot wounds hours later 200 miles away in El Campo.

Bluntson makes first appearance in court since December

By Zach Brooke
Published: Friday, February 22, 2013 8:14 PM CST

Demond Bluntson was present in the 49th District Court Friday, his first appearance inside a courtroom since December.

Bluntson, 37, has been in custody since June, awaiting trial on capital murder charges after allegedly killing his son and another boy in a hotel room during a standoff with police. He’s also accused of killing the boys’ mother and his former girlfriend, Brandy Cerny, in El Campo.

Standing before Judge Joe Lopez, Bluntson, wearing a full beard grown during his months in Webb County Jail, appeared small and thin — almost frail.

His attitude suggested otherwise.

The purpose of Friday’s hearing was to discuss the exchange of evidence between prosecutors and Bluntson’s defense team.

Bluntson was absent from the last evidence exchange on Jan. 18. His behavior before Lopez Friday might have explained why.

Bluntson told Lopez he felt he was improperly indicted because the criminal investigation was not complete when evidence against him was presented to the grand jury.

Lopez told him to discuss the matter with his attorneys. When Bluntson persisted, Lopez said, “I’m not going to sit here and argue with you about the law.”

“You are the law,” Bluntson responded.

Lopez said he was not obligated to answer Bluntson’s questions, questions that, according to one of his attorneys, were largely without merit.

“Apparently Mr. Bluntson believes the state has a duty to fully investigate the case … before presenting the case to the grand jury,” Eduardo Peña said afterwards. “That’s really not the law.”
