Normal Divorce filing: Wife of man charged in Ore. death

Post by Wrapitup on Mon Oct 29, 2012 10:09 pm

Published 6:53 p.m., Monday, October 29, 2012

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Court records show the wife of a Gresham, Ore., man charged with kidnapping and killing a 21-year-old barista has filed for divorce.

Multnomah County Circuit Court documents say 24-year-old Amanda Holt filed her petition Friday. The Oregonian reports she and 25-year-old Jonathan Holt have been married for two years.

Jonathan Holt is charged in the Oct. 16 death of Whitney Heichel (HIKE-ell) of Gresham.

He was indicted Friday in Clackamas County Circuit Court on charges of aggravated murder, kidnapping, robbery and sodomy.

A search for the young woman began after she failed to show up for her early morning shift at a Starbucks cafe. Her body was found Oct. 19 and Jonathan Holt was arrested the same day.

The Holts were neighbors of Whitney Heichel and her husband.

Whitney Heichel Ore. barista murder suspect Jonathan Holt left trail

(CBS/AP) OREGON CITY, Ore. - Jonathan Holt, the Oregon man charged with killing 21-year-old barista Whitney Heichel two weeks ago, unwittingly left a trail of evidence as police followed him in the hours before his arrest, court documents allege.

On Oct. 19, Holt discarded one handgun in bushes at his north Portland workplace, according to documents released Friday.

Investigators say he dropped another handgun in the grass outside the suburban Gresham Police Department, just before he entered for an interview at which police say he confessed to sexually abusing and killing Whitney Heichel of Gresham. Holt was arrested during that interview.

During a brief court appearance Friday, Holt, 25, was indicted on charges of kidnap, robbery and sodomy. He was earlier charged with aggravated murder.

Hundreds of people from around the Portland area gathered Friday at a Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall in Gresham for a public memorial for Heichel.

Her husband, Clint Heichel, spoke to reporters outside the hall, saying the family wanted to "give the community a hug" and thank people for their kindness.

After the young woman failed to show up for work at a Starbucks cafe on Oct. 16, relatives and friends launched a wide-ranging search. Holt, who was a neighbor, an acquaintance and attended the same church, was nowhere to be found, The Oregonian reported.

When friends finally spotted Holt nearly 12 hours later, court documents say he told them he had been on his way to work that day when he was robbed at gunpoint by two black men.

Holt didn't report that robbery to police that day but when questioned by officers for the first time on Oct. 17, he said he'd been shaken by the experience and spent the entire day walking and crying. Police say Holt repeatedly changed his story about the supposed robbery.

Whitney Heichel's Ford Explorer, with the passenger side window smashed, was found at a Walmart six hours after she disappeared, triggering an investigation that ended with the discovery of her body on Larch Mountain, east of Gresham, on the night of Oct. 19.

Court documents released earlier say that Holt told Oregon State Police Sgt. Jon Harrington that he waited outside Heichel's apartment and asked for a ride as she was leaving for work.

Minutes into the drive, he pulled a handgun and told her to drive to Roslyn Lake, the document said.

Holt then forced Heichel to perform oral sex before fatally shooting her, the affidavit stated, adding that Holt disposed of his cellphone at the lake before driving to the mountain to conceal the body.

Heichel was shot four times, police said.

Detectives forced to put emotion aside during Whitney Heichel case

Posted: Oct 31, 2012 9:05 AM CDT

By FOX 12 Webstaff - email

GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -
Detectives who worked on the murder case of Whitney Heichel said they knew from the start that her Oct. 16 disappearance bore few similarities to other missing person cases.

Heichel's neighbor, Jonathan Holt, admitted to police he waited outside her apartment and asked for a ride as the 21-year-old left for her 7 a.m. shift at Starbucks, authorities said. He made her to drive to a remote area, where he forced her to perform a sex act on him and then shot and killed her, according to detectives.

Heichel was reported missing a few hours later. Detectives Fred Huffman and Scott Hogan, who were on the case since day one, said they immediately had questions about the woman's disappearance.

"This was not a person that had that pattern of behavior," said Hogan.

Hogan and Huffman interviewed Heichel's friends, co-workers, family and husband, Clint. The pieces of Heichel's life started to come together, revealing a dependable, thoughtful and loving young woman who had no reason to run off.

Detectives said Whitney Heichel's body was found on Larch Mountain three days after Jonathan Holt killed her and dumped her body.

Court documents outline series of events in murder case
Police report details 'mental breakdown' from Jonathan Holt in 2011

Though Huffman said it was obvious Heichel was a special person, investigators couldn't focus on that fact.

"You are constantly trying to figure out where that person is, what's the next step. So for me, the emotional side sits there. You don't disregard it, but you put it aside until you do what you need to do," Huffman said.

On the evening of Oct. 19, Hogan joined a team of investigators on Larch Mountain where search crews found Heichel's body.

As a police officer, it meant closure in the case. But as someone who had become close with Heichel's family and friends, it meant grief.

"I knew immediately the pain that her family and friends were going to have to go through," Hogan said.

In the past week, Hogan and Huffman have moved on to other cases and resumed their normal workload. But they said no one in the Gresham Police Department or the Multnomah County Major Crimes Team will ever forget Heichel's case.

"I was ... very proud of my co-workers because even though it was bad news, people would know what happened," Hogan said.

Holt, the suspect in Heichel's case, is being held in jail without bail. He is facing six counts of aggravated murder, one count of kidnapping, one count of sodomy and two counts of robbery.

Normal Documents: Wife said Holt "can't handle things well, just loses it"

GRESHAM – Unsealed search warrants in the case of suspected killer Jonathan Holt show police found child pornography and two handguns he had possessed.

More than 40 pages of documents were released Friday afternoon describing the investigation that eventually identified Jonathan Holt as the suspect in the murder of Whitney Heichel.

The documents also describe police interviews with Holt and his wife Amanda who said her husband disappeared the day Heichel went missing.

Holt's wife told detectives he had told her a story about being robbed, and she replied to detectives that she felt he was "probably lying" to her. She told police that it had been "absolutely crazy the past two days" and she was "sure that whole story (Holt's story) sounds crazy as well."

Amanda Holt went on to tell police that Jonathan Holt "can't handle things well" and is "very private." She said that Holt "keeps everything to himself. So many things build up, I think he just loses it," the search warrants say.

Holt is charged with six counts of aggravated murder in the shooting death of 21-year-old Whitney Heichel, whose body was found by police on Larch Mountain last week.

Documents show investigators found two handguns in their search, one was found outside the Gresham Police Department where he is thought to have ditched it.

Holt admitted to detectives there was child porn on a computer in his possession and that he had previously broken into Heichel’s apartment and stolen an iPhone.

A team of detectives set up surveillance of Holt at his job at Canteen Services in Portland before he was arrested.

A detective following Holt said they watched him dump ammunition boxes, ammunition and a holster at locations around Gresham. Later, before a scheduled interview with detectives, Holt hid a handgun near his work and another in the bushes of the Gresham Police Department parking lot, both of which were recovered by police.

In his interview, Holt admitted shooting and killing Heichel. He also told police had had downloaded child pornography on computers he owned.

Initially, Holt said he had been robbed at gunpoint the morning of October 16, the same day Whitney Heichel disappeared.

Holt told detectives two men robbed him, taking his backpack and electronics while he was on his way to ride the MAX to work -- a story police said was retold later with inconsistencies.

Detectives said Holt told them he was "stressed" about the alleged robbery and that if it had not happened, he would have been more helpful to them regarding Whitney's disappearance.

Holt told detectives he was "having a sort of surreal feeling."

"Like, is all this stuff really happening, Whitney gone; I got robbed," documents show.

Holt eventually confessed to investigators he shot and killed Whitney, then led them to where he dumped her body on Larch Mountain, according to police.

In the video, the gunshop owner stated he worries when he sees someone come into his shop to purchase a gun w/out a car or a DL. I am confused. Can a person purchase a gun w/out a DL? Does a State ID work? OMG! If so, this needs to be changed!!!! my 2 cents

Normal Accused killer Jonathan Holt pleaded not guilty Thursday to new burglary, sex abuse charges

Post by Wrapitup on Thu Jan 10, 2013 8:01 pm

By Maxine Bernstein, The Oregonian
on January 10, 2013 at 8:00 AM, updated January 10, 2013 at 4:02 PM

Michael Lloyd/The Oregonian Accused killer Jonathan Daniel Holt was arraigned in Multnomah County court Thursday morning via video on a new indictment accusing him of burglary and encouraging child sex abuse.

Holt, 25, already in custody in connection with the Oct. 16 kidnapping and killing of 21-year-old Whitney Heichel, pleaded not guilty to an 11-count indictment.

The new indictment charges him with one count of first-degree burglary and 10 counts of encouraging second-degree child sex abuse, according to court records.

The new charges stem from evidence found during the police investigation of Heichel's homicide and Holt's statements to officers after his arrest.

According to a search warrant affidavit, Holt told officers he had previously entered Heichel's apartment in Gresham and stolen an iPhone. He told investigators that he put a new SIM card in it and then used the phone as his own before her death.

Gresham police also found images of child pornography on external computer hard drives they seized from Holt's backpack.

Holt, according to the search warrant affidavit, admitted to authorities that he had downloaded a lot of pornography and had been collecting the images on his laptop and external drives.

Holt appeared briefly via a video feed in Multnomah County Circuit Court about 10 a.m. He said little, only acknowledging to the judge that he could hear them.

The courtroom was packed with sophomores from Beaverton's Thomas Edison High School, spending the day sitting in on court hearings downtown.

He is still being held in Clackamas County in connection with Heichel's killing. He's accused of aggravated murder, kidnapping, robbery and sodomy.

Police say Holt asked Heichel, his Gresham neighbor, for a ride early Oct. 16. They say he ordered her at gunpoint to drive her SUV to Southeast Thomas Road near Roslyn Lake in Clackamas County, sexually assaulted her and shot her four times, killing her before dumping her body on Larch Mountain.

A plea change and sentencing hearing has been set for Jonathan Holt on July 2. He was arrested and charged with murder for the death of Whitney Heichel in October 2012.
Details of the plea agreement have not been released. Holt was set to face trial in April 2014.
Holt pleaded not guilty to charges including aggravated murder, kidnapping and robbery. He has been kept behind bars with no bail since his arrest on Oct. 19, 2012.
The case started on Oct. 16 when Heichel's husband reported her missing after she didn't show up for work at Starbucks.
Police and search crews canvassed the community looking for her. The community generated dozens of tips for police.
Then, during a late night press conference on Oct. 19, Gresham police announced they had found Heichel's body on Larch Mountain and arrested a suspect.
Investigators said Holt admitted to police he waited outside Heichel's apartment and asked her for a ride on Oct. 16.
About five minutes into the ride, Holt told investigators he pulled a gun and forced her to drive to Roslyn Lake in Clackamas County. Once there, deputies said he forced Heichel to perform a sex act on him.
He is then accused of shooting and killing Heichel. Holt told investigators he disposed of his cellular phone at Roslyn Lake after the shooting and took Heichel's body and dumped it on Larch Mountain, detectives said.
Investigators said he then made up a story about being robbed at gunpoint on the way to work as an alibi, before finally confessing, according to court documents.
Holt's wife filed for divorce on the same day he pleaded not guilty in court. A judge finalized the divorce on Dec. 11.

Normal Guilty plea expected Monday in murder of 21-year-old Heichel

Post by Wrapitup on Mon Jul 08, 2013 1:19 pm

By Valerie Hurst, KATU News; KATU.com Staff Published: Jul 8, 2013 at 8:18 AM PDT Last Updated: Jul 8, 2013 at 8:45 AM PDT

PORTLAND, Ore. – The case of chilling crime is expected to reach its conclusion Monday afternoon at the Clackamas County Courthouse.

Jonathan Holt is expected to change his plea to guilty in the murder and kidnapping of his 21-year-old neighbor, Whitney Heichel.

Heichel's widower, Clint, told KATU News last month that the district attorney's office told him it was working on a deal with the 25-year-old Holt and that Holt will plead guilty to killing his wife.

Police say Holt waited outside Heichel’s apartment the morning of Oct. 16, 2012, then talked her into giving him a ride on the way to her job at Starbucks. He then ordered her at gunpoint to drive him to Rosyln Lake in Clackamas County, where he sexually assaulted her and shot her, investigators said.

Holt lived in the couple’s apartment complex and was a member of their church.

Though it’s unclear why Holt decided to change his plea, a legal analyst said it’s likely because Holt was potentially facing the death penalty and his lawyers decided prosecutors have a solid case. Court documents show Holt confessed to the crime, but still planned to plead not guilty until last month.

Prosecutors might have worked out the agreement to save Heichel’s family from the ordeal of a trial.

BS BS BS BS BS  This ass should NOT be able to get a plea deal. What is the State of Oregon thinking???  Would bet Whitney's family would not have a problem with 'the ordeal of a trial.' my 2 cents

Normal Whitney Heichel's family confront Gresham woman's killer, sentenced to life in prison

Post by Wrapitup on Tue Jul 09, 2013 10:51 am

Clinton Heichel stared at his wife's killer, Jonathan Holt, until the two made eye contact. (Benjamin Brink)

on July 08, 2013 at 5:24 PM, updated July 08, 2013 at 11:44 PM

When it came time for Clinton Heichel to address the man who murdered his wife, he sat silently staring at the killer, Jonathan Daniel Holt, for a long minute.
Jonathan Holt said he deserved whatever sentence the judge imposed.
Holt had just admitted kidnapping and shooting 21-year-old Whitney Heichel of Gresham and was sentenced to spend his life in prison with no possibility of parole.

"What do you say to the man who has taken the love of your life?" Clinton Heichel asked. "My life has been ripped apart and turned upside down," because of your selfishness. "But know this: I will see her again," said Heichel, a devout Jehovah's Witness.

More than 60 members of Whitney Heichel's family and church attended Holt's sentencing Monday before Clackamas County Presiding Judge Robert Herndon. Holt pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, first-degree kidnapping and first-degree robbery.

The shaggy-haired Holt, flanked by his two defense attorneys, sat with his head bowed, through almost all of the 50-minute hearing.

Holt sobbed as the victim's mother, sister and mother-in-law told him how his actions had affected them. But his tears flowed most freely when Clinton Heichel spoke.

During the silence, Holt lifted his head three times, locked eyes with Heichel then dropped his head. "I wanted him to look me in the eye before I said anything. A man should be owning up to the things that he's done. You should be able to look a man in the eye. It's about as simple as that," Heichel said outside the courthouse.

Before the family made their statements, there was a brief recounting of the events that led to the life sentence.

Holt left no doubt that he killed Heichel. He confessed three days after the Oct. 16 murder and led police to her body. Holt told investigators that he waited for Whitney Heichel outside her residence at the Heatherwood Apartments in Gresham, where they both lived. They also were members of the same Jehovah's Witnesses congregation.

As Whitney Heichel was leaving for work, Holt asked her for a ride. About five minutes into the ride, he pulled a gun and ordered Heichel to drive to Roslyn Lake in Clackamas County, where he forced her to perform oral sex on him. He then shot her four times, killing her. Afterward, he concealed the body on Larch Mountain.

Heichel family members noted that Holt's family, including his ex-wife, who divorced him immediately after his arrest, also suffered . "Both families were forced to face the unthinkable," said Lora-lei Ritmiller, Whitney Heichel's mother

Ritmiller and other relatives recounted the pain and devastation of their loss, making frequent references to their faith and the belief that Jehovah would be Holt's ultimate judge. In a statement laced with Biblical references, Ritmiller said Satan was an invisible force behind such heinous acts and that Holt was "eager to be his puppet."

Chelsea Sauer, Whitney Heichel's sister berated Holt, calling him a coward, a liar, a thief, a pervert and a murderer. "We know what you are, the congregation knows what you are and Jehovah knows," Sauer said.

Holt made a short statement, saying he deserved whatever sentence was imposed on him. "All the things that were said about me are true. Because of my selfishness, I have stolen a daughter, a sister and wife," Holt said, speaking meekly and staring down. "I'm sorry for what I did."

Herndon acknowledged Holt's obvious emotional distress and commended him for taking responsibility, admitting his guilt and "not torturing your victim's family for months and months" making them await a trial scheduled for early next year.

"We got what we wanted," said Clackamas County prosecutor Steven Mygrant. "He'll be locked up for the rest of his life."
