A shooting near a mall in Brookfield, Wis., on Sunday left at least seven people hospitalized, according to local news reports, and police are searching for the suspected shooter.

WISN-TV reported a "mass shooting" at a salon across the street from the Brookfield Square Mall.
The shooting occurred at around 11:00 a.m. local time, police say.

According to police, the suspected shooter is a 6'2" black male weighing 200 pounds and last seen wearing a grey sweater, blue jeans and a white and black backpack, and was driving a black 2003 Mazda Protege.

Officials initially described a "mass casualty" situation, WISN said, though to this point no fatalities have been confirmed. According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the mall has been placed on lockdown.

A spokeswoman for Froedtert Memorial Hospital told the Associated Press that said four victims were being treated for non-life threatening injuries, and that three more victims were expected; an official at the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department told news service that deputies are looking for an active shooter.

SWAT, fire and rescue officials responded to the scene, and a Flight for Life helicopter landed in the mall's parking lot.

Sunday's shooting took place less than a mile from a hotel where a gunman opened fire during a Living Church of God service in 2005. Seven people were killed and four wounded in that shooting.

Shooting at Wisconsin spa; 7 injured

[Updated 2:24 p.m.] FBI and ATF agents are among the authorities at the scene, CNN affiliate WISN reports.

[Updated 2:07 p.m.] The nearby mall and some other buildings are on lockdown, CNN affiliates report.

[Updated 1:56 p.m.] CNN affiliate WTMJ reports authorities are looking for a suspect.

[Updated 1:54 p.m.] CNN affiliate WISN reports that a witness described seeing two women leaving the spa, apparently injured. One crawled out and was taken by emergency responders. The other was treated by emergency personnel in a squad car.

[Updated 1:32 p.m.] Hospital spokeswoman Nalissa Wienke tells CNN all four people in the emergency room appear to have non-critical injuries. She could not say whether the injuries were due to gunshots. At this time, the hospital does not believe it will need more staff, she said.

[Updated 1:28 p.m.] Numerous emergency vehicles are at a spa in Brookfield, Wisconsin, as local news agencies report a shooting took place.

Four people are in an emergency room, and another three are on their way, said Beth Strohbusch of Froedtert Hospital in nearby Milwaukee.

CNN affiliate WTMJ says the Waukesha Sheriff's Department confirmed there was a shooting, and that witnesses say it was either at or near the Azana Salon and Spa, which is across the road from Brookfield Square Mall.

CNN affiliate WISN called it a "mass shooting."

[Updated 4:41 p.m.] Authorities "believe" three of the seven people shot Sunday have died, police Chief Daniel Tushaus said.

The shooting took place around 11 a.m. CT (noon ET), the chief explained.

Authorities have been able to track down a 2003 Mazda Protege linked to the suspect - which was found outside the city of Brookfield - but the suspect remains at large. He's been identified as Radcliffe Haughton, who Tushaus said weighs 270 pounds and stands just over 6 feet tall.

[Updated 4:10 p.m.] Bomb squad personnel are at the scene of the shooting, Brookfield police Lt. John Beth said, pointing to concerns there may be explosives at the site.

[Updated 3:42 p.m.] ATF spokesman Thomas Ahern identifies the suspected shooter as Radcliffe Haughton, 45, of Brown Deer, Wisconsin. The shooting is being investigated as a possible domestic-related incident, according to Ahern. The suspect remains at large.

Radcliffe Haughton

[Updated 3:29 p.m.]ATF spokesman Thomas Ahern confirms to CNN that seven people were shot by a lone gunman at the Azana Hair Salon and Spa. "Employees said a man entered the salon, workers saw a firearm - a handgun of some sort," Ahern told CNN's Susan Candiotti. "An employee said to the gunman something like, 'If you're gonna rob the place, rob the place,' and then (the gunman) opened fire."

Normal Radcliffe Haughton: Brookfield Square Mall Shooting Suspect Reportedly Identified

Post by Wrapitup on Sun Oct 21, 2012 4:02 pm

Posted: 10/21/2012 3:37 pm EDT Updated: 10/21/2012 4:40 pm EDT

Authorities have identified the suspect of a mass shooting near a Wisconsin mall, NBC reports.

WTMJ reports that the shooting suspect is Radcliffe Haughton.

According to WTMJ, Haughton is 45 years old. He is the husband of one of the employees at the Azana Day Spa in Brookfield, Wis. where the shooting took place, Waukesha Patch reports. WTOP's Nick Pisano points out that court records show Haughton had recently been issued a temporary restraining order.

The Associated Press reports that the shooting left 3 people dead.

WTMJ describes Haughton as a 6-foot-1-inch tall, 270 pound African-American man with a bald head and brown eyes. During a press conference, police said they located a black 2003 Mazda Protege that the suspect may have been driving.

The suspect is still at large, WISN reports. Multiple federal agents have been sent to the area to help local authorities. Areas near the salon, including the hospital where victims are being treated, have been placed on lockdown.

Authorities are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call their tipline at 262-787-3701.

Spa Massacre By Estranged Husband With Restraining Order

By ALYSSA NEWCOMB (@alyssanewcomb) and PIERRE THOMAS (@PierreTABC)
Oct. 21, 2012

A man who had been ordered to stay away from his estranged wife barged into a Wisconsin spa where his wife worked and shot seven women, killing three of them, before shooting himself to death, police said today.

It wasn't yet clear whether the wife of Radcliffe Haughton, 45, was among the dead.

Police said that it appears that Haughton started a small fire in the Azana Salon & Spa in Brookfield, Wisc., that was extinguished by the building's sprinkler system. Initial reports that Haughton left behind a bomb turned out to be false.

"We believe this incident is domestic violence related," Brookfield Police Chief Daniel Tushaus said at a news conference this evening.

Tushaus said that on Oct. 4 police were called to the spa because Haughton allegedly slashed the tires of his wife's car. She sought a restraining order on her husband on Oct. 8 and on Oct. 18 a judge issued a four-year restraining order, Tushaus said.

Today's shooting erupted 11:09 a.m CT in Brookfield, and shortly after SWAT teams surrounded the spa with their guns drawn, preparing for a gun battle.

Witnesses described screaming women, at least one bleeding, fleeing the spa, with one rolling down a slight hill before police scooped her up and got her out of the area.

Tushaus said that police rescued up to 12 clients and employees when they first arrived and began a painstaking search of the 9,000 square foot building that includes two floors. The chief said the building included many treatment rooms, often locked.

"We were expecting an armed encounter," Tushaus said.

They found Haughton in a locked section of the building where he had apparently shot himself, the chief said.

The four injured women ranged in age from 22 to 40 and were taken to Froedert Hospital with what were described as non-critical injuries.

The hospital was briefly placed on lock down and only patients with a police escort were being accepted. Employees wishing to enter had to show identification.

Sheriff deputies searched the hospital before lifting the lockdown, apparently worried that the gunman had followed the victims to the hospital.

A "be on the lookout" alert was issued for Haughton and hours later, a black 2003 Mazda driven by the suspect was recovered outside of Brookfield, however police declined to say where it was found.

Tushaus said police believe the gunman took a taxi to the spa.

Authorities swarmed Haughton's home in the suburb of Brown Deer, and sent in a robot to search the residence, ABC News' affiliateWISN reported.

The Westmoor Country Club, which shares a parking lot with the spa, was put on lockdown along with other businesses in the area, said the club's chief operating officer Joe Coen.

"We didn't hear anything but ventured to the north toward the spa and we could clearly see police officers with what looked like to be a rifle and a few attendants were coming out of the building," he said. "We quickly retreated back to the building where authorities have told us to stay."

Gov. Scott Walker pledged his support for the victims and the community.

"Senseless acts of violence leave us with heavy hearts and many questions," Walker said in a statement. "Our state will stand with the victims and their families, and we will provide them with the law enforcement and community support they need to heal in the coming days."

This is not the first time a violent shooting has rocked the area.

On Aug. 5, Wade Michael Page, an Army veteran and white supremacist, killed six people and injured three others before fatally shooting himself at a Sikh temple south of Milwaukee.

In 2005, less than a mile away, a gunman killed seven people and wounded four more at a church service at the Sheraton Hotel. Terry Michael Ratzmann, the 44-year-old gunman, then committed suicide.

Radcliffe Haughton Had History Of Abuse; Killed 3, Himself At Azana Day Spa In Wisconsin

By DINESH RAMDE 10/22/12 09:49 AM ET EDT

BROOKFIELD, Wis. — A man suspected of opening fire at a Wisconsin salon where his wife worked, killing three women and wounding four others, had a history of domestic abuse and had been arrested for slashing his wife's tires a few weeks earlier, police said.

It wasn't clear if Radcliffe Franklin Haughton's wife was among the victims in Sunday's shooting at the spa in Brookfield, a middle-to-upper class suburb west of Milwaukee. Haughton, 45, shot himself to death at the salon, police said.

Haughton's wife sought court protection four days after he slashed her tires on Oct. 4, Brookfield police said. Police arrested him and a judge granted a four-year restraining order on Thursday. As part of the order, Haughton, of Brown Deer, was prohibited from owning a firearm.

Brookfield Police Chief Dan Tushaus declined to comment on whether Haughton had surrendered any weapons prior to Sunday's salon rampage. Tushaus also said he wasn't aware of a motive, but that investigators weren't looking for anyone else in the shooting.

"I can tell you we're not seeking additional suspects," he said at a news conference Sunday evening. "The community can feel safe."

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agent Tom Ahern said Monday that a .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun was used in the attack.

A spokeswoman at the Froedtert Hospital where the injured were taken said one of the four women remained in critical condition early Monday. Kathy Sieja said the three other women were in satisfactory condition.

The shootings set off a confusing, six-hour search for the gunman, forcing the lockdown of a nearby mall, a country club adjacent to the spa and the hospital where the survivors were taken. The search froze activity in a commercial area of Brookfield for much of the day.

Authorities said it would take time to sort out exactly what happened, and emphasized they were still interviewing witnesses and rescuers and didn't have a firm timeline of events. Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto called the shootings "a senseless act on the part of one person."

The chaos started around 11 a.m. at the Azana Day Spa, a two-story, 9,000-square-foot building across from a major shopping mall. The first officers on the scene found the building filled with smoke from a fire authorities believe Haughton set, Tushaus said.

They also found a 1-pound propane tank they initially thought might be an improvised explosive device, Tushaus said. That slowed the search of the building as law enforcement agents waited for a bomb squad to clear the scene.

Tushaus said later that police didn't know whether the gunman brought the propane tank to the spa or whether a contractor left it.

The search was also complicated by the layout of the building, with numerous small treatment rooms and several locked areas, Tushaus said. While officers initially thought the gunman had fled the building, they later found his body in one of the locked areas, he said.

The bodies of the victims were also found in the spa. Tushaus said investigators were still working to identify them. He said the four survivors were between the ages of 22 and 40. He didn't know if they were employees at the spa or customers, and it wasn't clear if the man's wife was among the victims.

Haughton's father, Radcliffe Haughton, Sr., spoke to The Associated Press shortly before police announced that they had found his son's body. In telephone interviews from Florida, he said he had last spoken to his son a few days ago, but didn't know anything was wrong. He begged his son to turn himself in.

After learning of his son's death, he said only: "This is very sad."

A sea of ambulances and police vehicles converged on the scene shortly after the shooting. A witness, David Gosh of nearby West Allis, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he was returning from duck hunting with his father and a friend when he saw a woman emerge from the spa, screaming, as she ran into traffic.

"She ran right out into the street and was pounding on cars," Gosh told the newspaper. Moments later, a man with a handgun ran out. He appeared to be chasing the woman but then went back inside, Gosh said.

At the hospital where the victims were taken, staff members were escorted inside during a temporary lockdown. Officers were stationed at entrances, and critically injured patients were admitted with a police escort.

It was the second mass shooting in Wisconsin this year. Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran and white supremacist, killed six people and injured three others before fatally shooting himself Aug. 5 at a Sikh temple south of Milwaukee.

Sunday's shooting took place less than a mile from where seven people were killed and four wounded on March 12, 2005, when a gunman opened fire at a Living Church of God service held at a hotel.

Oct. 22, 2012

The estranged wife of a Wisconsin man who barged into a Wisconsin spa and allegedly shot seven women before killing himself is apparently among the three women who were fatally wounded.

Zina Haughton died after husband Radcliffe Haughton, 45, allegedly opened fire at the Azana Salon & Spa in Brookfield, Wis., Sunday, a source with knowledge of the investigation said. Police have yet to confirm the identities of the three women killed.

Police were called to the spa several weeks before the shooting because Haughton allegedly slashed the tires of his wife's car. He was arrested and charged for the incident, and later ordered to turn over all guns in his possession to the sheriff's department.

Zina Haughton sought a restraining order on her husband Oct. 8 and a judge issued a four-year restraining order Thursday, according to Brookfield Police Chief Daniel Tushaus.

Investigators say they are still unclear why Radcliffe Haughton allegedly snapped, although they say he and his wife had been estranged for some time.

Witnesses say Zina Haughton's daughter, Yasmeen Daniel, 20, also worked in the spa and witnessed the shooting.

"She had said her stepfather was in there trying to shoot as many people as he could," said Sallie Konruff, a witness at the scene.

Zina and Radcliffe Haughton have a 13-year-old daughter together, who was living with her father until the shooting, the source said.

Radcliffe Haughton's father, Radcliffe Haughton Sr., apologized to the victims and their families for his son's apparent actions shortly after the incident.

"All I can say is, I want to apologize to the people of Milwaukee who have been hurt. He did not give me any hint of what he would do," Haughton told ABC News affiliate WISN-TV.

Haughton Sr., who lives in Florida, told WISN that his son was a former Marine whom he had not seen since sometime last year but spoke to him on the phone from time to time.

The shooting erupted 11:09 a.m. local time in Brookfield, and shortly after SWAT teams surrounded the spa with their guns drawn, preparing for a gun battle.

Witnesses described screaming women, at least one bleeding, fleeing the spa, with one rolling down a slight hill before police scooped her up and got her out of the area.

Customers -- some still in robes, others barefoot -- ran out of the spa in a panic. John Gosh came face-to-face with the shooter as he tried to escape.

"When the suspect came around the corner, he really looked like a deer in headlights. He didn't expect us to be standing there. He just ducked behind the building," Gosh said.

Chief Tushaus said police rescued up to 12 clients and employees when they first arrived and began a painstaking search of the 9,000-square-foot building that includes two floors. The chief said the building included many treatment rooms, often locked.

"We were expecting an armed encounter," Tushaus said.
