A 7-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl were found stabbed to death in an Indiana home and police are questioning the woman who was reportedly babysitting the children, according to authorities.

The person of interest being questioned in the fatal stabbings is related to the 7-year-old, and she was watching the other child, according to ABC News' Chicago station WLS-TV. The Chicago Tribune is reporting the suspect was the 7-year-old's mother.

Police discovered the bodies during a well-being check to the Naperville, Ill., house at around 10:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Authorities also reportedly discovered two dogs stabbed to death in the house, according to WLS-TV.

"Investigators have a person of interest in custody and are continuing the investigation in conjunction with the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office and possible criminal charges are forthcoming," the Naperville police said in a statement.

According to the Chicago Tribune, law enforcement officials said the woman was distraught over the recent death of her father.

She is to appear in DuPage County bond court at 8 a.m. Thursday. There were no charges tonight, as the police are reportedly waiting to interview someone out of town.

But police did say there was no reason to believe that any additional suspects were at large.

One of the children was a student at Brookdale Elementary School.

School principal Mary Howicz released the following statement: "It is with great sadness that we inform you that the Brookdale community mourns the loss of one of our kindergarten students, who passed away last night. The district's crisis team is in place this morning to support students and staff as they cope with this news."

The deaths come come less than a week after a New York City nanny stabbed the two young children who she was entrusted to care for.

The children's mother returned home to find her two young children dead, then watched helplessly as the nanny knifed herself in the throat and slit her wrists, according to police. The nanny is alive, but still in the hospital.

Updated story

Two young children have been found stabbed to death inside a Naperville home and police have taken their babysitter into custody for questioning Wednesday morning.

The children, ages 5 and 7, were discovered late Tuesday night by Naperville police during a well-being check, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. Both children were pronounced dead at the scene.

Elzbieta Plackowska, 40, was charged in the double slaying Wednesday, NBC Chicago reports.

The babysitter's child is among the victims, while the other belonged to a mother who had left for work and put her child in the sitter's care. According to WGN reports, the babysitter stabbed her own child and a child she was watching.

The Sun-Times reports two dogs were also found killed inside the home.

Naperville police do not think there are other suspects are at large, writes the Associated Press.

According to Patch, the younger child was a kindergartener at Brookdale Elementary School. The older child attended a school in Naperville District 203.

Naperville Police Sgt. Louis Cammiso told the Chicago Tribune that community members have no reason to fear for their safety and that the tragedy is "isolated and contained."

This is a developing story.

Naperville baby sitter charged with killing 2 children

By Christy Gutowski, Melissa Jenco and Vikki Ortiz Healy, Chicago Tribune reporters
10:55 p.m. CDT, October 31, 2012

A Naperville mother who left her daughter in the care of a baby sitter while she went to work learned after a frantic search Tuesday night that her little girl had been slain by the caretaker, who also killed her own son, officials said.

The baby sitter, Elzbieta M. Plackowska, 40, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder Wednesday night, DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said. Sources said the woman had given various explanations for what happened, including hearing demonic voices that led her to stab the children to death.

The bodies of the children — identified by sources as Olivia Dworakowski, 5, and Justin Plackowska, 7 or 8 — were discovered by police in a bedroom of the girl's town home in the western suburb, officials said.

Plackowska, who is also identified in public records as Plackowski, was taken to the DuPage County Jail and is expected to appear in bond court Thursday morning. She has no previous criminal history, prosecutors said.

As details of the killings on the quiet cul de sac slowly emerged, residents throughout the community reacted with shock. Some wondered how to carry on with regular Halloween activities, while others worried about how their children would react when they found out about the deaths.

"It's a tragedy," said Laura Maniaci of Naperville, who has two children at Scott Elementary School, where Justin was a student. "How do you explain this to your child? I don't know."

Children showed up in jellyfish and pumpkin costumes for the annual Halloween parade at the school, where students were offered counseling by crisis teams expected to remain as long as necessary to deal with the "tragic and upsetting event," said Naperville Unit District 203 Superintendent Dan Bridges.

Across town, counselors were also on hand for students at Brookdale Elementary, which confirmed the death of a kindergarten student on its website.

Tim Prerost, who has a daughter at Scott, said, "It's unthinkable, it's shocking, but we don't know what really happened."

Another parent who would identify herself only as Christine said, "It's horribly sad. It's a tightknit school and it's really difficult for everyone."

Neighbors and a source close to the investigation identified Olivia's mother as Marta Dworakowski, a nurse who worked an evening shift at a dialysis lab. She declined to talk to a reporter when reached by phone Wednesday afternoon.

The children were found stabbed multiple times in a town home in the Brookdale Manor subdivision in the northwestern corner of Naperville. The boy was on a mattress and the girl on the floor, officials said.

Two dogs also were found stabbed to death in the home, sources said.

According to a law enforcement source, Plackowska told police she had taken the children with her to a church in Naperville earlier Tuesday, then returned to the Dworakowski home in the 800 block of Quin Court.

At some point Tuesday night, Plackowska argued on the phone with her husband because she wanted to return to her native Poland while he wanted to remain here, the source said.

Plackowska allegedly told police that she attacked the children after hearing demonic voices, the source said. She allegedly told police she had to save the children's souls from the devil by killing them, according to the source.

When pressed, she told authorities she also was angry with her husband and distraught over the death of her father in Poland, the source said.

After the slayings, Plackowska drove back to the church but couldn't reach anyone, she allegedly told authorities. She also left several frantic voice messages on the church's answering machine before ultimately tossing her cellphone out the car window, officials said.

Plackowska, covered in blood, then drove to a home on Violet Circle in Naperville, where her adult son called 911, sources said. Police said they were alerted at 10:18 p.m. Tuesday and had to break into the Quin Court home.

Two Young Children Found Stabbed to Death in Illinois Home. Mother of one of the children, Elzbieta Plackowska, 40, was charged in the double slaying. Empty PROSECUTOR: ILLINOIS WOMAN STABBED SON 100 TIMES

Post by Wrapitup Thu Nov 01, 2012 9:57 am

Nov 1, 10:52 AM EDT

WHEATON, Ill. (AP) -- A suburban Chicago woman stabbed her 7-year-old son 100 times because she was angry with her husband and a 5-year-old girl about 50 times because she witnessed the attack, as both children prayed and begged for their lives, prosecutors said Thursday.

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said Elzbieta Plackowska, 40, told investigators several stories, at first blaming the attack on a stalker who got into her home in Naperville, 25 miles west of Chicago. She later said the children had evil inside of them and she was fighting the devil in the house, Berlin said at a bond hearing.

Plackowska eventually admitted that she was angry with her husband, who works as a truck driver and is often gone, because he left her alone to care for her son, Justin, and work as a maid, which she felt was beneath her, Berlin said.

"She told the detectives that she thought by killing Justin she would make her husband hurt the way she hurt in their relationship," Berlin said.

Plackowska told investigators she found the children jumping on the bed and then attacked them, also slitting their throats, Berlin said.

"She had grabbed a knife and she made both victims kneel and begin praying. She began stabbing her son Justin and told him he was going to heaven tonight. He pleaded for his life and told her to stop. But she continued stabbing him until he was dead," he said.

"She then turned her attention to 5-year-old Olivia and began stabbing her with the knife multiple times. She as well pleaded for her life, but the defendant continued to stab her until she was deceased."

Plackowska killed the girl, Olivia Dworakowski, because the child had witnessed the attack on her son, Berlin said.

DuPage County Judge John Kinsella ordered Plackowska held without bond.
Plackowska didn't speak during the hearing other than to indicate she could not afford an attorney. The judge appointed a public defender.

Elzbieta Plackowska Update: Illinois mom stabbed son 100 times and girl 50 times, prosecutors say

By Crimesider Staff Topics Daily Blotter

(CBS/AP) -- A Chicago woman stabbed her 7-year-old son 100 times and a 5-year-old girl she was babysitting 50 times at the girl's Naperville home, prosecutors said Thursday morning in a bond hearing.

Elzbieta Plackowska, 40, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths her son, Justin, and Olivia Dworakowski on Tuesday night in Olivia's suburban Chicago home. She was denied bail this morning during her first court appearance.

Plackowska told investigators several stories, at first blaming the attack on a stalker who got into her home in Naperville, 25 miles west of Chicago. She later said the children had evil inside of them and she was fighting the devil in the house, DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said at a bond hearing.

Berlin said that Plackowska told investigators she found the children jumping on the bed and then attacked them, also slitting their throats.

"She had grabbed a knife and she made both victims kneel and begin praying. She began stabbing her son Justin and told him he was going to heaven tonight. He pleaded for his life and told her to stop. But she continued stabbing him until he was dead," he said.

"She then turned her attention to 5-year-old Olivia and began stabbing her with the knife multiple times."

Berlin said that Plackowska killed the girl, Olivia Dworakowski, because the child had witnessed the attack on her son.

DuPage County Judge John Kinsella ordered Plackowska held without bond. Plackowska didn't speak during the hearing other than to indicate she could not afford an attorney. The judge appointed a public defender.

Police discovered the bodies of the children after Olivia's mother, Marta Dworakowski, requested a welfare check when she couldn't find her daughter after she finished her evening shift at a dialysis lab, according to neighbors and officials.

After the slaying, Plackowska drove to a church before arriving at a different Naperville home where her adult son called 911, the Tribune reported.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services joined in the ongoing investigation.

Prosecutors: Woman Who Killed Two Children Went To Confession First

November 2, 2012 10:50 AM
Updated 11/02/12 – 2:13 p.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) – The woman accused of killing her 7-year-old son and the 5-year-old girl she was babysitting allegedly went to confession at a Naperville church before the murders.

CBS 2’s Susanna Song reports, according to DuPage County prosecutors, Elzbieta Plackowska visited St. Elizabeth Seton Church with her son, Justin Plackowski, and 5-year-old Olivia Dworakowski on Tuesday, just hours before she stabbed them to death.

According to prosecutors, Plackowska visited the confessional, although it is not known which priest she spoke to , or what she told him. Anything she did confess would be considered privileged communication, meaning it would be inadmissible in court.

Authorities said Plackowska went back to the church after killing the two children, but the doors were locked.

Plackowska and her husband were parishioners at the church. Those at the church on Friday declined to answer questions about Plackowska’s visit on Tuesday.

Meantime, a new judge has been assigned to the case. The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s office said Judge Robert Kleeman has been assigned to the case, after Judge John Kinsella handled Plackowska’s bond hearing.

According to the Daily Herald, Plackowska’s public defender was allowed the option of striking two judges from consideration for the case, and asked that the case not be assigned to Kinsella or Judge George Bakalis, who presided over the trial of Marilyn Lemak, who killed her three kids in Naperville in 1999. Lemak pleaded not guilty due to insanity, but was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

Plackowska, 40, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder late Wednesday night. She was ordered held without bail Thursday morning and is on suicide watch at the DuPage County Jail.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin called the bedroom where she allegedly killed the two children “a scene of unimaginable horror.”

Authorities Justin and Olivia were jumping on the bed in the master bedroom Tuesday night, when Plackowska allegedly told them to get down, kneel on the floor, and start praying.

“She began stabbing her son, Justin, and told him he was going to heaven tonight. He pleaded for his life and told her to stop,” Berlin said. “But she continued stabbing him until he was dead. She then turned her attention to 5-year-old Olivia, and began stabbing her with the knife multiple times. She, as well, pleaded for her life.”

Prosecutors said Plackowska admitted killing Justin because she wanted to hurt her husband, who she believed did not appreciate her. She also allegedly admitted killing Olivia, because she witnessed Justin’s murder.

Berlin said Plackowska made that admission only after changing her story several times. Plackowska first claimed the children were killed by a robber while she was outside smoking. Then she said the kids were killed by someone who had been stalking her. Then she claimed she was battling the devil, and was trying to save the children from evil.

According to Berlin, Plackowska finally admitted those claims were lies, and she killed her son because she was angry with her husband for regularly leaving her at home alone with Justin while he worked as a trucker.

Berlin also said Plackowska claimed her husband didn’t treat her the way she deserved, and didn’t appreciate how good of a wife she was.

Plackowska’s husband, Artur Plackowski, told the Associated Press he has no idea why his wife killed Justin and Olivia. He said she had told him she loved him the day before the murders, and he denied the two were having problems.

Counselors have been at the schools the two children attended to help students and teachers in the aftermath of the murders. Naperville police officers, paramedics and others who responded to the murders are also undergoing mandatory counseling after viewing the bloody murder scene.

Mourners continued continue to lay fresh flowers and dolls for the two children Friday morning outside the home where they were slain.

Funeral services have been set for a 7-year-old Naperville boy who's mother has been charged with stabbing him to death.

The mother, Elzbieta Plackowska, of 234 E. Bailey Road, Naperville, was charged with two counts of first degree murder after prosecutors say she stabbed to death her own young son — 7-year-old Justin Plackowska — and the girl she was baby-sitting on Tuesday night. In a hearing Thursday, a judge ordered she be held without bond.

On Saturday, a note on the website of Justin’s school, Naperville's Scott Elementary asked those in the campus community to the newly scheduled services. A wake is scheduled from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Seton Church at 2220 Lisson Road, Naperville. His funeral is set for Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the same church.

According to prosecutors, Plackowska was looking after two children — 5-year-old Olivia Dworakowski and her son, 7-year-old Justin — at the Dworakowski home Tuesday night in the 800 block of Quin Court. At some point in the evening, she told the children to get ready for bed. Prosecutors say that when the children instead began jumping on the bed, Plackowska went to the kitchen, armed herself with a knife and returned to the master bedroom.

Plackowska is accused of stabbing her son repeatedly over his entire body. She then turned her attention to Olivia and, prosecutors allege, stabbed her repeatedly as well. She then stabbed the two family dogs to death as well and left, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s office.

She eventually made her way to a friend’s house on Violet Circle almost three miles away in Naperville, where she reported having been robbed. Police arrived about 11 p.m. and found her covered in blood, prosecutors say.

About the same time, Naperville police received a call from Marte Dworakowski seeking help in finding her daughter. Police arrived and made their into the locked house, where they discovered the bodies of Justin and Olivia.

As of Saturday, Olivia's funeral arrangements hadn't been made public. However, a fund has been established to help with funeral expenses at any Naperville Bank & Trust location. Donations can also be mailed to Naperville Bank & Trust, Olivia Dworakowski Memorial Foundation, P.O. Box 294, Naperville, IL 60566.

Meanwhile, Plackowska is due in court next for arraignment on Nov. 21. If convicted, she faces a mandatory sentence of natural life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Public may never know what alleged Naperville killer told priest

BY DAN ROZEK Staff Reporter [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] November 3, 2012 12:00AM
Updated: November 4, 2012 5:36PM

Whatever Naperville baby-sitter Elzbieta Plackowska told a Catholic priest hours before she allegedly murdered her son and another child likely will remain private forever.

Unless, legal experts say, Plackowska wants her words made public to help her fight the charges she fatally stabbed the youngsters.

But even in that event, it’s possible the priest she spoke to at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholc Church in Naperville could refuse to disclose what she said, arguing religious law requires him to protect her confidential statements.

What almost certainly won’t happen, experts said, is that Plackowska’s statements could be used by DuPage County prosecutors trying to show she talked ahead of time about the Oct. 30 killings of her son, 7-year-old Justin, and 5-year-old Olivia Dworakowski.

Talks between a parishioner and a priest are legally protected — or privileged — as strongly as conversations between a husband and wife or a lawyer and client.

“Those conversations are all private. It’s about as privileged as you can get,” said Brian Telander, a former prosecutor and judge now in private practice.

GBAFB!!!!!! When a person brutally MURDERS (part of the infamous 10 Commandments) children in particular, all bets are OFF. And, what is this about privacy or whatever between a husband and wife? So, according to that "religion" if the husband tells the wife he is a raving maniacal serial killer, she can legally keep mum? Bull to the Shit! BS BS BS head bang grrrr

Family of slain Naperville boy grieves on Facebook

BY BECKY SCHLIKERMAN Staff Reporter [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] November 3, 2012 8:18PM

Updated: November 4, 2012 11:51AM

The father of the Naperville boy allegedly killed by his baby-sitting mother took to Facebook to express grief over the loss of his son and show support for his accused wife.

“Justin, if you are in heaven my son don’t abandon us in difficult times,” Artur Plackowski wrote in Polish below a picture apparently of Justin looking up at the camera and smiling, gaps where his two front teeth should be.

Artur Plackowski is apparently the father of the boy and husband of Elzbieta Plackowska, also identified in records as Elzbieta Plackowski. She is accused of killing the 7-year-old boy and her baby-sitting charge, Olivia Dworakowski, 5.

“I cannot justify what happened my wife very much loved that baby i can’t understand why she did that,” he wrote as another comment for that same picture.

Seconds later he added, “I am forgiving her!!!!!!!”

Justin’s older brother apparently also turned to Facebook to remember the little boy.

On Matt Plackowski’s Facebook page, he posted a photo of the little boy dressed in a white martial arts uniform posing with what appears to be his older brother and a large Tae Kwon Do trophy.

“My angel,” Matt Plackowski wrote in a comment.

As friends wrote their condolences and offered prayers, Matt Plackowski commented, “Everyone dont pray for me pray for Justin and that girl. Keep their spirits alive for me.”

Funeral arrangements for Olivia are being handled by Skaja Terrace Funeral Home in Niles, but the services are private, according to the funeral home. The girl’s mother could not be reached Saturday.

A fund for Olivia’s family has been created at Naperville Bank & Trust. Donations can be made to the Olivia Dworakowski Memorial Foundation, P.O. Box 294, Naperville, IL 60566

Information for Justin’s services was not immediately known. Attempts to reach his family were unsuccessful.

That girl has a name! OMG that part makes me so mad, he didn't even give her or her family the dignity of mentioning her by name, Oliva!
I could never forgive someone for doing this! If I ever did it would be to release me from my own self destruction from giving the person too much control over my life but that would be way down the road.
There is no excuse for what that so called Mother did, plain and simple!

It seems to me like their marriage was pretty bizarro just from what I've read.

Yes, I noticed him not mentioning Olivia by name and it made me livid!!

It seems her husband, a truck driver, was away from home more than she would like and she felt working as a maid to help make ends meet was beneath her. Angry with her husband because she wanted to go back to Poland and he wanted to stay in the States she decided the best way to punish him would be to kill their son…

Apparently, after arguing with her husband by telephone, she found their 7 year old son, Justin and 5 year old Olivia Dworakowski, whom she was babysitting at the time, playing and jumping on a bed. She made them kneel, pray, and told her son he was going to heaven tonight. As Justin begged, pleaded for his life and told this emotionless twat he loved her, she stabbed him 100 times. Then as Olivia begged her not to hurt her, she stabbed her 50 times because she had witnessed Justin’s murder. She then went to church and finally to her older son’s home where he called 911.

Returning home from work, Olivia’s mother couldn’t get into the house or locate her daughter so she called the police who broke in and found Justin on the floor and Olivia on the bed. They also found 2 dog’s bodies near the children’s.

Of course she had a few different versions of what happened when taken into custody covered in blood. The first was an intruder killed them. When that didn’t work she tried the bat shit crazy defense, claiming voices were telling her to do it, the kids “had evil in them” and she had to “drive the devil out of them”. Finally, she told detectives she thought by killing Justin she would make her husband hurt the way she hurt in their relationship… She’s been charged with 2 counts of 1st degree murder.

My heart breaks for Olivia’s mother and Justin’s father. Be at peace Angels knowing no one can ever hurt you again.

My husband works away from home for 30 days at a time. At least 6 months out of a year I am alone, usually more. Do I resent having to do and deal with everything by myself? At times yes, and then I remember he’s gone to take care of our family!! He doesn’t want to be away from home anymore than we want him to be gone!

This selfish, egomaniacal hag viciously murdered two beautiful children because she was unhappy with her life… She has no conscience! She has no heart! She has no soul!

Normally, I’d say she deserves to die, but in her case I think life in prison would be much more fitting!! I think the inmates would teach her a very valuable lesson in humility! If she thinks being a maid is beneath her, let’s see how she likes being Bertha’s bitch!!

Yeah, let her suffer in prison since she's so beneath earning money being a maid. What a sick *itch to kill those children because she's mad at her husband and she'll 'show him'! And the husband is still sticking by her? Oh heck no, he should be on his knees apologizing to the parents of little Oliva! And praying to his son that he'll be in peace. I wish I could get a hold of that female! MOO.

Prosecutors want Naperville murder suspect examined by psychiatrist

BY DAN ROZEK Sun-Times Media November 7, 2012 10:36PM

DuPage County prosecutors want a judge to require Naperville double-murder suspect Elzbieta Plackowska be examined by a psychiatrist — a signal they believe she likely will raise an insanity defense.

Prosecutors are expected on Thursday to formally ask Judge Robert Kleeman to order the psychiatric evaluation for the 40-year-old Naperville babysitter charged last week with brutally stabbing two young children.

In a separate action, Plackowska’s attorney also has filed a request seeking to have another mental health expert evaluate her.

Plackowska is accused of killing her 7-year-old son, Justin, and 5-year-old Olivia Dworakowski while she was caring for them on Oct. 30 at the girl’s Naperville townhouse.

Kleeman could rule on both requests Thursday when Plackowska, who is being held without bail, appears in court.

Kleeman also may consider a media request to allow cameras in the courtroom during Plackowska’s legal proceedings. If that request is granted, Plackowska’s case would be the first one televised and photographed in the Chicago area following an Illinois Supreme Court decision to allow broader media coverage of court hearings.

Plackowska allegedly told police she attacked the children with a kitchen knife after first ordering them to kneel and pray because she found them jumping on a bed.

Prosecutors have said both children were stabbed dozens of times and had their throats slashed.

Two dogs in the home also were stabbed to death.

In statements to police, Plackowska allegedly offered differing accounts of the killings, but at one point claimed she stabbed the youngsters because they were “poisoned by society” and she needed to “drive the evil” out of them.

Prosecutors said she later admitted concocting those claims, and instead told investigators she killed her son because she was angry at her husband. Plackowska allegedly told police she killed Olivia because the little girl had witnessed her son’s murder.

In their filing, prosecutors are seeking permission to have Dr. Alexander Obolsky evaluate Plackowska’s mental condition.

Obolsky, who practices in Chicago, testified last month in a high-profile Lake County trial that he believed murder suspect Daniel Baker was insane when he beat his girlfriend’s mother to death.

A judge rejected that opinion as he earlier this week convicted Baker of that 2010 murder.

Plackowska’s attorney didn’t disclose in his filing who he wants to evaluate Plackowska.

Two Young Children Found Stabbed to Death in Illinois Home. Mother of one of the children, Elzbieta Plackowska, 40, was charged in the double slaying. Empty Court hearing for woman charged with Naperville murders

A Naperville woman accused of murdering her 7-year-old son and a 5-year-old girl left in her care was back in court this afternoon on a state motion for a psychological evaluation.

DuPage County prosecutors have filed a request to have Elzbieta Plackowska examined. She is charged in the Oct. 30 slayings of her son, Justin Plackowski, and Olivia Dworakowski.

At today’s hearing, Judge Robert Kleeman made no ruling on the motion, but ordered the parties to return to court Tuesday on the matter. Plackowska showed no emotion during today’s hearing.

In a Wednesday court filing, DuPage State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said his office reasonably believes that insanity issues may be relied on in Plackowska’s defense, and prosecutors are requesting that a clinical psychiatrist examine Plackowska.

Although prosecutors say Plackowska, 40, admitted stabbing her son to death because she was angry with her husband – and then killing Olivia because the child was a witness – she also had made previous statements about demonic forces.

During a police interview after her arrest, Plackowska told police she was “battling the devil” inside the Dworakowski residence, and that the children had evil inside of them, and that she was trying to drive it and the devil out of the children.

She also told police that the children had been poisoned by society, and that she was trying to drive out that poison by killing the children so they could go to heaven, according to the motion.

I think there is a good chance she will win the insanity defense. MOO.

Naperville woman Elzbieta Plackowska indicted for murder of son, 5-year-old girl

Created: Thursday, November 15, 2012 5:20 p.m. CST
Updated: Thursday, November 15, 2012 6:02 p.m. CST

According to media reports, a Naperville woman accused of stabbing her 7-year-old son and a 5-year-old girl she was baby-sitting has been indicted on first-degree murder charges.

On Thursday, DuPage County States Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement that a grand jury indicted Elzbieta Plackowska on 10 counts of first-degree murder.

In addition, the 40-year-old mother faces two counts of aggravated cruelty for stabbing two family pets, a mixed breed dog named Niki and a dachshund named Tootsie.

According to reports, prosecutors said that Plackowska told police she killed her son last month to punish her husband because he left her alone during the week. She said she killed the girl because she was a witness to the stabbing.

Plackowska is slated for an arraignment Wednesday before DuPage County Judge Robert Kleeman.

Kleeman has ordered a mental examination.

Prosecutors ready for possible insanity defense in Naperville child slayings

By Josh Stockinger

The prosecution and defense each sought their own psychiatric examinations of Naperville double-murder suspect Elzbieta Plackowska on Thursday, but her attorney said he has no doubt she’s mentally fit to stand trial.

“She’s still obviously very upset,” Senior Assistant Public Defender Mike Mara said. “I think she understands what’s happening in court. I don’t have any doubts about her fitness to proceed.”

Mara declined to comment on his client’s mental state on Oct. 30, when prosecutors allege she repeatedly stabbed her 7-year-old son Justin and kindergartner Olivia Dworakowski, 5.

DuPage County prosecutors anticipate a possible insanity defense and want the 40-year-old Naperville woman examined by psychiatrist Alexander Obolsky. Judge Robert Kleeman gave the defense until Tuesday to respond.

State’s Attorney Bob Berlin said he wants Plackowska examined quickly to get a better idea of her mental state as soon after the murders as possible.

“Time is of the essence,” he told Kleeman, who agreed.

The defense also requested an independent evaluation, which was discussed in judge’s chambers. Outside of court, Mara declined to disclose whether the request was granted. Any related orders signed by the judge were sealed.

Berlin said any psychiatric examination by a defense expert would be disclosed to prosecutors only if Plackowska’s attorneys decide it’s relevant to her case and use it as evidence.

Obolsky, the psychiatrist tapped by prosecutors, testified last month in the high-profile Lake County trial of Daniel Baker, saying the defendant was insane when he beat his girlfriend’s mother to death with a baseball bat. A judge rejected the argument and convicted Baker.

Insanity is different from mental fitness in that fitness determines whether a defendant is capable of participating in court proceedings, while insanity centers on the defendant’s state of mind at the time of a criminal act.

Also Thursday, attorneys in the case indicated for the first time that they will not object to extended media coverage, including TV coverage of Plackowska’s arraignment on Nov. 21.

Both sides, as well as Kleeman, expressed concern about the logistics of having two TV cameras and two camera operators in Kleeman’s fourth-floor courtroom. The venue could be changed to a larger room, they said.

If granted, it would be the first case in DuPage to be televised since the Illinois Supreme Court began allowing cameras into criminal trial courts on an experimental basis this year.

“We have to figure out how this is going to work but, as far as the request, I don’t have an objection,” Mara said.

Berlin said he didn’t have any immediate concerns as long as cameras don’t interfere with the proceedings.

“We’re not objecting on the face of it,” he said.

Plackowska appeared to be lucid and listening intently in court Thursday. She did not speak, other than to thank her attorney after he told the judge he was trying to arrange a Polish interpreter. Mara has said Plackowska speaks English but is more comfortable with her native language.

Plackowska is accused of slaying the children as she baby-sat them in the younger victim’s Naperville town home. She told police she made them get on their knees and pray before she stabbed Justin close to 100 times with a kitchen knife, then repeatedly stabbed Olivia, while both children begged for their lives. She also is accused of fatally stabbing two dogs inside the home.

Plackowska offered varying motives — including that the children had “evil” inside them — but eventually told authorities she just wanted to get back at her husband. Berlin said she attacked Olivia because the 5-year-old was a witness.

Courtroom cameras denied again in DuPage

By Josh Stockinger

For a second time, a DuPage County judge has denied camera access to a courtroom.

The request — to cover an appearance for Elzbieta Plackowska, accused of stabbing to death two children in Naperville — came from a Chicago TV station.

But Judge Robert Kleeman denied it Wednesday, saying nothing of substance would occur during the Jan. 4 appearance, and moving it to another courtroom to accommodate the equipment would be disruptive.

"I don't know what's to be gained," he said, noting that two court calls would be affected by the move.

Defense and prosecuting attorneys supported the ruling, citing the same objections.

Kleeman also entered a standing order allowing him the discretion to rule on all future media requests to record the Plackowska case without holding a hearing — unless the media making the request asks for a hearing.

"We would virtually double the number of court appearances, and I don't know what the point would be," he said.

Plackowska's arraignment last month was the first in the Chicago area in which still and video cameras were allowed to record the proceedings. But a subsequent request to cover a hearing for an Aurora teenager accused of reckless homicide in a fatal car crash was denied.

Plackowska is charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder — five counts each for her 7-year-old son Justin and 5-year-old Olivia Dworakowski. Plackowska also pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated cruelty on charges of stabbing to death two family dogs. The killings occurred Oct. 30 at the Dworakowski family townhouse in Naperville.

The state supreme court in January agreed to allow cameras in the courtroom on an experimental basis. In the suburbs, only DuPage and Cook counties have made formal applications for court cameras. Kane County court officials have said they plan to apply, and Lake and McHenry counties are exploring it.

The first circuits approved in Illinois included Winnebago, Rock Island, Carroll, Jo Daviess and other western counties, partly because of their proximity to Iowa's Quad Cities, where court cameras have been used since 1979. Downstate Madison County, approved in March, was selected in part because it's close to St. Louis, where court cameras have been allowed for years.

Accused double-murderer must give saliva and hair samples for DNA tests

BY DAN ROZEK Staff Reporter February 11, 2013 9:04PM

Accused double-murderer Elzbieta Plackowska must give saliva and hair samples for DNA tests, a DuPage County judge ruled Monday.

Prosecutors sought the samples from the former Naperville babysitter to genetically compare with hair and blood found last October in the home where she allegedly stabbed her 7-year-old son and a 5-year-old girl.

Judge Robert Kleeman agreed to let prosecutors obtain the genetic material after Plackowska’s court-appointed attorney didn’t object to the DNA tests.

Plackowska, 40, is charged with stabbing and slashing her son, Justin, and Olivia Dworakowski — the daughter of an acquaintance — while babysitting at the girl’s Naperville townhouse.

A bloody knife was found in the kitchen sink following the Oct. 30 killings, while a second knife — also stained with blood — was found in Plackowska’s car, authorities have said. Hair fibers were found on and near the children’s bodies in the bedroom where they were slain, authorities have said.

Plackowska allegedly told police she killed the children to try to drive “evil” out of them but later told authorities she committed the murders because she was angry with her husband.

Kleeman already has ordered Plackowska to undergo a psychological evaluation sought by prosecutors.

Plackowska is being held without bail in the DuPage County Jail.

Two Young Children Found Stabbed to Death in Illinois Home. Mother of one of the children, Elzbieta Plackowska, 40, was charged in the double slaying. Empty Plackowska’s Lawyers Get More Time To Put Together Medical Report

Post by NiteSpinR Wed Jun 05, 2013 2:22 pm

May 12, 2013

The lawyers representing Elzbieta M. Plackowska, charged with two Naperville murders, will have more time to get together medical and mental health reports on their client to give to the court.

That was the decision Friday morning as Plackowska appeared in DuPage County Court in Wheaton.

Plackowska, a 40-year-old Polish immigrant, is charged with the October 2012 murders of her son Justin, 7, and his friend Olivia Dworakowski, 5, in Naperville.

At precisely 9:30 a.m., Plackowska was called before DuPage Judge Robert G. Kleeman, who was asked by counsel representing the defendant to allow an extension to get together medical reports. Dressed in a dark blue sweatshirt and sweatpants with her blond hair tied in a knot, Plackowska never spoke and appeared placid as she stood before the judge for less than two minutes.

She was joined by an interpreter who stood next to her on her right.

Kleeman agreed to give defense counsel until July 12 to present the medical report.

Attorneys for Plackowska said they thought asking for a two-month extension “was a realistic goal” in terms of having enough time to obtain the necessary information to give to the court.

Post by NiteSpinR Fri Sep 20, 2013 8:42 pm

The baby sitter charged with stabbing two children to death in Naperville has undergone a psychological evaluation, authorities said Friday.

Elzbieta Plackowska was recently interviewed by a psychologist hired by prosecutors, DuPage County State's Attorney Bob Berlin said.

"We hope to have (a final assessment) by the end of October," he told Judge Robert Kleeman in court.

Prosecutors can request psychological screening of a defendant when they have reason to believe insanity might be raised as a defense. Plackowska's lawyer also can seek an independent exam.

The 41-year-old Naperville woman is accused of repeatedly stabbing Olivia Dworakowski, 5, and her own son, Justin Plackowski, 7, in October 2012. Police said she killed them while baby-sitting at the younger child's home.

Plackowska remains jailed without bond and has pleaded not guilty. Her next court date is Nov. 8.

Post by NiteSpinR Fri Nov 01, 2013 2:51 am

October 30, 2013

A suburban Chicago woman accused of repeatedly stabbing her 7-year-old son and a kindergartner she was babysitting told police hours later that she felt she was killing the devil, not the children, and that by doing so she was saving them.

Those statements are contained in 182 pages of police reports on last year's slayings.

Forty-one-year-old Elzbieta Plackowska has pleaded not guilty in the killings at a home in Naperville on Oct. 30 of last year. She remains jailed pending the start of her trial.

Detectives conducting initial interviews reported her saying that she "saw the devil" that day and "went crazy."

They say she also claimed she killed the children because she was angry with her husband.

Post by NiteSpinR Sat Feb 22, 2014 1:38 pm

2/22/2014

Was Elzbieta Plackowska of Naperville sane the night she is alleged to have killed two young children, including her 7-year-old son?

The answer may be contained in a 900-page psychologist’s report that emerged from a 15-month evaluation of Plackowska ordered by DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin.

Berlin submitted the report to Judge Robert Kleeman and Plakowska’s defense attorney Friday but declined to comment on its contents.

Prosecutors can request a psychological screening of a defendant when they have reason to believe insanity might be raised as a defense. Plackowska’s lawyer also can seek an independent exam.

Defense attorney Michael Mara asked for an opportunity to review the report and was given until March 7.

The 41-year-old woman is accused of repeatedly stabbing Olivia Dworakowski, 5, and her own son, Justin Plackowski, 7, in October 2012. Police said she killed them while baby-sitting at the younger child’s home.

Plackowska remains jailed without bail and has pleaded not guilty.
