Police suspect the child, Lucas Calvert, is with James Calvert, 41, who drives a 2000 Buick LeSabre, Texas license plate number DP4-G858. The man is a suspect in the fatal shooting of his ex-wife, reports KLTV (Channel 7) in Tyler. He was last heard from in Tyler, 95 miles east of Dallas.

Lucas is about 30-40 pounds and was last seen wearing gray sweat pants, a blue sweatshirt and has silver caps on some of his teeth. James Calvert has brown hair, brown eyes and is about 5-foot-9, 185 pounds. Police believe he is still armed.

If you have any information that might help authorities get Lucas home safely or information about the suspect, call the Tyler Police Department at 903-531-1000.

According to Channel 7 in Tyler, Calvert has been in jail on three charges of violating a protective order since 2009. He was also charged with aggravated assault/family violence in 1999. Several blocks are being shut down on the street where the shooting of the ex-wife happened and Texas Rangers are now on the scene.

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
Police are searching for a 4-year-old boy and a man suspected of shooting and killing his ex-wife, according to Tyler Police spokesman Don Martin.

According to Tyler Police, Jelena Radovanovic Sriraman, 30, was shot and killed around 12:10 p.m. Wednesday in the 3300 block of Bain Place. Investigators say Sriraman's ex-husband, James W. Calvert, 41, of Tyler, shot his ex-wife and kidnapped their 4-year-old child, Lucas Calvert. Sriraman is Calvert's third wife. They were married in 2004 and divorced in 2010.

Lucas is about 3 feet tall and 30-40 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing gray sweat pants, a long-sleeved blue sweatshirt and brown sandals. He has silver caps on some teeth.

James Calvert is described as a white man standing 5'9" and weighing 185 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. He is believed to be driving a 2000 gray four-door Buick LeSabre with Texas plates DP4-G858.

Tyler Police have a warrant out for Calvert on charges of capital murder. Once captured, Calvert's bond will be $2 million.

A 24-hour hotline has been set up for anyone with information regarding their whereabouts. Call 903-595-7220.

Police have surrounded and executed a search warrant on Calvert's home in the 14,000 block of Highway 31 East. SWAT assisted in the search, but Calvert was not found. Investigators are still searching his home and have his residence blocked off.

CPS confirmed they have taken a 5-year-old child into custody to an undisclosed foster location.

According to the Smith County Sheriff's Office, Calvert has been booked into the county jail on three charges of violating a protective order since 2009. He was also charged in 1999 with aggravated assault/family violence.

In May 1999, Calvert was charged with aggravated assault/family violence. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years probation.

In September 2009, he was charged with violation of a protective order against him, and three months later, in December 2009, was charged with violating his bond conditions.

His last arrest was in May 2010, when he was again charged with violating a protective order.

Numerous city blocks are being shut down near Amherst, and the Texas Rangers are now on the scene.

According to Larry Craig, pastor of Southern Oaks Baptist Church, which owns the home where the shooting occurred, the church was letting Sriraman stay in a mission house while she was going back to school an rearranged some things in her life, like getting remarried and becoming a U.S. citizen.

Craig says he only met Calvert once and did not know much about but, but Craig added that the two had recently undergone a child custody hearing as she prepared to move to Houston. Craig said Calvert always seemed to be determined to be involved in his children's lives.

TYLER (CBSDFW.COM) – The man accused of shooting and killing his ex-wife before fleeing with their 4-year-old son was arrested in Louisiana late Wednesday after a chase with police. The boy was not hurt.

James W. Calvert, 41, was taken into custody by police in West Monroe around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night. According to CBS station KYTX in Tyler, police spotted Calvert’s silver Buick LeSabre and, after they tried to pull the car over, Calvert led them on a chase. The chase ended when Calvert crashed on a dead end street. Police said that Calvert would not exit the car and that officers had to break the window to get him out.

Investigators said that there was a gun in the front seat and another in the back seat. Calvert’s son, Lucas, was in a child safety seat in the back seat and did not get hurt.

The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services has custody of Lucas and James Calvert is in the custody of the West Monroe Police Department. Both will be brought back to Tyler.

Police in Tyler issued an Amber Alert for the 4-year-old boy after officers found his mother shot and killed.

The Tyler Morning Telegraph reported that another child of the slain woman was at school and is safe. The woman’s pastor, Larry Craig of Southern Oaks Baptist Church, told the newspaper that the woman and Calvert had recently gone through a child custody case in which she was awarded custody.

I cannot begin to imagine what this little one has endured. His mother is dead at the hands of his father (I wonder if he witnessed it???), then his father abducts him and takes him across State lines on a high speed chase. This psycho needs the DP!!

DEVELOPING: Kidnapped boy found safe, father arrested

Thursday, November 1, 2012 - 9:34am

TYLER, TX (KETK) — Update (Thursday, November 1): KETK has confirmed that the kidnapped child, Lucas Calvert, 4, has been found safe, and the father, James Calvert, 41, has been arrested in West Monroe, Louisiana.

When police tried to pull the car over, James Calvert took off and led police on high speed car chase. It ended shortly when Calvert turned down a road with no outlet and crashed.

Tyler Police tell KETK, when Louisiana police approached Calvert's car they noticed he had a pistol in his lap and a pistol in the back seat.

He would not let officers into the crashed vehicle, so they were forced to break out the window to make their arrest.

Calvert's son was in backseat strapped into a child seat and unharmed by the crash, or his father.

He is still in a Louisiana jail, but he will be back in Tyler behind bars on a 2 million dollar bond shortly, according to police.

His charges in Texas are capital murder, and kidnapping, and he now faces charges in Louisiana for evading arrest.

KETK will bring you more information as it becomes available.

It's interesting that his fatherly love and devotion is somewhere between strapping the boy in a child seat and a high speed chase.

UPDATED 11:56 A.M.: Police said Texas murder suspect had firearm on lap

11:55 AM, Nov 1, 2012
Written by
Barbara Leader and Zack Southwell

West Monroe Police Wednesday night arrested an East Texas man wanted in connection with the shooting death of his ex-wife and snatching their 4-year-old son.

Cpl. J.P. Gabb said James Calvert, 41, fled a traffic stop around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in West Monroe after officers saw the driver of a Buick make an erratic turn on the Downing Pines Road exit of Interstate 20.

“Because of his suspicious behavior, our officers began pursuing the Buick,” Gabb said.

He said officers do not believe Calvert had any intentions of stopping or doing anything in West Monroe other than driving through.

Gabb said the shooting reportedly occurred Wednesday afternoon, which is when police received an Amber Alert from Tyler, Texas authorities. He said once the officer began following Calvert, he made no intention to stop and initiated a brief chase.

After the pursuit, police said Calvert wrecked his vehicle on a dead-end street, at which point he was forcibly taken into custody after refusing officers’ orders to exit the vehicle.

The victim, Lucas Calvert, 4, was found unharmed in a car seat after the wreck.

Gabb said Child Protective Services from Smith County, Texas were notified and they picked up Lucas.

“Our officers recognized the boy from their patrol briefing earlier in the day,” Gabb said.

Officers also recovered two weapons from Calvert’s vehicle at the time of the arrest.

“He had a firearm in his lap,” Gabb said. “But thankfully, no weapons were fired.”

An Amber Alert was issued for the boy Wednesday afternoon after his mother, Jelena Sriraman, was found shot to death in Tyler.

Gabb said West Monroe police have no intention of charging Calvert with anything he did while in Louisiana.

“He did commit a reckless driving offense,” Gabb said. “But to charge him would tie him up in our legal proceedings and delay those of Texas authorities.”

Gabb said West Monroe investigators could not comment on why Calvert was in West Monroe or where he was headed. Tyler, Texas is about 190 miles west of Ouachita Parish, just south of I-20.

Details weren’t immediately available on an attorney for James Calvert, whose bond is $2 million.

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
The 4-year-old boy and his 5-year-old sister caught up in the Halloween shooting death of their mother will be re-united with their stepfather Thursday.

We're learning more about the sometimes violent history between the victim, 30-year-old Jelena Sriraman, and her ex-husband James Calvert, accused of her murder.

But there are still so many questions. Could he have been stopped from taking her life? Records show a protective order had been put into effect to keep Jelena safe, but Calvert violated that three times.

Protective orders can last for up to two years, but can always be modified or extended before they expire. According to Smith County judicial records, Jelena Sriraman no longer had a protective order protecting her from her ex-husband, despite a history of his violating orders issued by a judge.

Judge Carole Clark of the 321st District Court ordered that the Lucas Calvert and his sister's stepfather would hold temporary managing conservatorship. A spokesman for Child Protective Services (CPS) said with no criminal history and the children asking for him, they believe he is the best option for the children, adding that he is planning to legally adopt both children.

Police arrested Lucas' biological father, James Calvert, 41, late Wednesday night in West Monroe, LA. He is behind held in West Monroe, LA, on charges of fugitive from justice. Once he is extradited to Texas, he faces a capital murder charge for the killing of his ex-wife - the children's mother - Jelena Radovanovic Sriraman, 30.

According to investigators, Calvert shot and killed Sriraman shortly after noon on Wednesday in the 3300 block of Bain Place. He then is accused of kidnapping Lucas. Sriraman is Calvert's third wife. They were married in 2004 and divorced in 2009.

The shooting and subsequent Amber Alert issued to help find Lucas led to a day-long search for the suspect and his son. Less than 12 hours later, an officer saw the suspect vehicle on Interstate 20 in West Monroe, LA, according to police.

According to a police affidavit, the driver of the suspect vehicle made an abrupt turn and crossed over the solid white line and onto the shoulder of the exit ramp. According to the affidavit, the officer attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver would not stop.

Following a short chase, the officer identified the driver as Calvert and made the arrest. Officers transported him to West Monroe Correctional Center, where he was held until Tyler Police and FBI agents arrived to interview him.

West Monroe police say Calvert had guns in his lap and the backseat of the car, where Lucas was unharmed in a car seat.

During the arrest, West Monroe Police said Calvert sat silently in his car with his hands on the steering wheel until officers broke through a window. When they pulled him out of the car, officers said he didn't fight and he remained silent. However, once in a holding cell, Maj. Jeff Terrell said he ripped bars off the window and began hitting himself with them.

When questioned by police, Terrell said Calvert began making threats.

"[He] said he was going to go out in a blaze of glory or something to that effect," Terrell said. "And he did make a statement to officers that if given the chance he was going to try to escape or shoot somebody or kill himself."

DPS, Texas Rangers, the FBI and U.S. Marshals were all involved in the search. The investigation is still ongoing at this time. It is unknown when Calvert will be extradited back to Texas.

Martin says the district attorney's office is working with Louisiana courts to quickly bring Calvert back to East Texas. Maj. Jeffrey Terrell said Thursday the West Monroe, LA, Police Department has only charged Calvert as a fugitive from justice to help speed up the extradition process.

Calvert can either waive extradition and return to East Texas voluntarily, or the Smith County District Attorney's Office will obtain a governor's warrant to force him to return.

According to files at the Smith County Records Division, in 2008 Judge Clark approved a restraining order against Calvert to protect Sriraman at the time of their divorce. He violated it in 2010, and Judge Rodgers issued another restraining order for him to stay 100 ft. from Sriraman.

In September 2009, he was charged with violation of a protective order restricting him from seeing Jelena, and three months later, in December 2009, was charged with violating his bond conditions.

According to files at the Smith County Records Division, Judge Rogers signed a new document ordering Calvert to not communicate in any manner directly nor indirectly nor go within 100 feet of the person, residence, place of business, school, child care facility, or any other place that Jelena may be located. This condition was inclusive of family member (or friend) contacting the above on behalf of the Defendant or for any other reason. He was also to stay at least 100 feet away from Jelena.

In May of 2010 he violated that protective order.

In a previous marriage in 1999, he was arrested and charged with aggravated assault family violence, according to files at the Smith County Records Division.

Affidavit: Witnesses ID'd suspect's car

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
An arrest affidavit released Friday shows a woman killed on Halloween was shot multiple times, and two witnesses keyed on the suspect vehicle.

WARRANT: James W. Calvert (PDF)
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

According to the document, Tyler Police Det. Kenneth Gardner arrived at the home on Bain and found a damaged door into the home. Lying in the doorway was the body of Jelena Sriraman, 30, along with several shell casings. "[Sriraman] was deceased from apparent gunshot wounds," according to the report.

A witness on the scene told investigators she heard the shots and saw a white man walk from the carport, carrying a small child. The woman said the suspect got into a light-blue Buick and left. A second witness said she also heard the gunshots and saw a man in his late 30s leave with a small boy in a white sedan.

In his report, Gardner said Calvert drives a light gray Buick.

"When I saw the photo, it could be mistaken for a light blue color," he said in the report.

One suspect confirmed the photo of Calvert's vehicle matched the one she saw leaving the scene of the crime.

During the investigation, Gardner reported Sriraman and Lucas Calvert, 4, were at the residence. A woman who was at the home minutes before Sriraman was killed told investigators that Sriraman had received a call from Calvert earlier in the day, and that another of his ex-wives was in the process of serving court papers.

The woman said Calvert was upset with Sriraman because he believed she was trying to help his other ex-wife. When the woman spoke with Sriraman, "she told her that James Calvert was yelling and cussing at her," and "Sriraman was scared that James Calvert was going to come to her house," the affidavit states.

Sriraman planned to get her daughter after school and leave the house in case Calvert came there to get the children.

TYLER (November 6, 2012)--Bond is now set at $25 million for James Calvert of Tyler, who was arrested in Louisiana and charged with capital murder in the death of his ex-wife and abduction of the couple’s 4-year-old son, for whom an Amber Alert was issued.

On Monday Tyler police on Monday transported Calvert, 41, from West Monroe, La., where he and the boy were found last Thursday.

His son, Lucas, was found unharmed in a car seat after a police chase that ended when Calvert’s vehicle crashed.

An Amber Alert was issued for the boy last Wednesday afternoon after Sriraman, 30, was found shot to death in Tyler.

Police say James Calvert fled a traffic stop around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in West Monroe, about 190 miles east of Tyler.

Officers recovered two guns from the car.

The woman's pastor, Larry Craig of Southern Oaks Baptist Church, told a Tyler newspaper the woman and Calvert had recently gone through a child-custody case in which she was awarded custody.
