BY DAVID CARRIGG, THE PROVINCE NOVEMBER 15, 2012 7:27 PM

Alvin Barnet, 3, is missing and police believe he is with father Robert Barnet. They were travelling in a blue 2002 Subaru Outback, headed south on Highway 93 in B.C.’s East Kootenays. It’s now believed they have crossed the border into Montana.

A Canada/U.S. manhunt is underway after a Sparwood man was suspected of abducting his three-year-old son following a supervised visit with the boy for his birthday on Thursday afternoon.

Elk Valley RCMP issued an Amber Alert at 4:30 p.m.

RCMP Const. Dan Moskaluk said Robert Barnett, 39, was visiting his son Alvin Barnett in Fernie on Thursday afternoon.

Moskaluk said Barnett had “limited and arranged parental right” to Alvin.

The pair are believed to have left town in a blue 2002 Subaru Outback, licence plate number 347 SBL, and travelled south on Highway 93 and into Montana.

U.S. authorities have been notified and are working with Canadian police.

Alvin Barnett, 3, is Caucasian, 3-foot-2 and weighs 35 pounds.

According to the Missing Children Society of Canada website, Alvin’s birthday is on Nov. 15.

Robert Barnett, 39, is 5-foot-5 with green eyes, unshaven with reddish blond hair. He has a scar above his right eyebrow.

According to online records, Barnett was charged in January 2000 with driving while his licence was suspended.

If you see Barnett do not approach him. Instead call 911 immediately.

A man who police believe abducted his three-year-old son in southeastern B.C. has crossed the border into the United States, RCMP have confirmed.

An Amber Alert was issued Thursday afternoon after the boy was taken from the Elk Valley area, near the Alberta border. Alberta and Montana also issued their own Amber Alerts in the case Thursday night.

RCMP identified the boy as Alvin Barnett and the abduction suspect as his father, Robert Barnett. Police said Barnett was travelling in a blue 2002 Subaru Outback with B.C. licence plate 347SBL.

RCMP allege Robert Barnett has abducted his son.
The father is described as 39 years old, five feet five inches tall, with reddish-blond hair, and a scar above his right eyebrow.

Police said anyone who spots the vehicle should not approach it but should call 911.

RCMP spokesman Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said the Amber Alert would remain in effect for the time being.

Moskaluk said the child and father were together during a supervised parental visit, indicating the father had limited access to his child, and as a result the incident met the criteria for an Amber Alert.

11/16/2012: BC Amber Alert Cancelled: Alvin Barnett (3) ▬►LOCATED SAFE IN MONTANA: An Amber Alert that extended into Idaho is now cancelled. The British Columbia Amber Alert Coordinator called it off Friday morning after the 3-year-old boy at the center of the alert was found safe in Montana. Authorities say Alvin Barnett's biological father took the boy from a city in Elk Valley, British Columbia. On Friday shortly before 8 a.m., the BC Amber Alert Coordinator advised the child had been located safely in Montana. The boy's father, Robert Barnett, was taken into custody. Barnett's vehicle, a 2002 blue Subaru Outback, was seen crossing the border in Eureka, MT at around 3:15 p.m. Thursday. Police had asked anyone who may have seen the pair not to approach them, and instead call 911.
