Lukes Ladewig, 30 of Montague, was arrested Oct. 18, charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm and a probation violation. He's being held without bail at the Siskiyou County Jail.

Montague, Calif. -- A Montague man was arrested yesterday under suspicion of assaulting his wife, who later died at a Redding hospital.

Lukes Ladewig, 30, is being held without bail at the Siskiyou County Jail, said Allison Giannini, spokesperson for the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department. He has been charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm and a probation violation.

Deputies were called to the Kuck Road residence in Montague on a report of an unresponsive woman at about 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17. They found the 30 year old victim in the bathroom of her residence with “visible injuries to her body,” said Giannini.

“Emergency medical responders on scene were able to establish a pulse, and the victim was transported to Fairchild Medical Center for treatment,” Giannini reported.

She was later transferred to Mercy Medical Center Redding.

“Despite a heroic effort by medical personnel to save her life during the day and nighttime hours, she was pronounced dead” on Thursday morning, Giannini said.
During the investigation, Sheriff’s personnel noticed “inconsistencies” in Ladewig’s account of events, Giannini said. Detectives from the major crimes unit were summoned and after subsequent interviews, they served a search warrant, gathered evidence and developed probable cause to believe the victim’s injuries resulted from a domestic violence incident at the home, said Giannini.

A forensic autopsy will take place in the next few days to determine the exact cause of death, said Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Detective Sergeant Mark Hilsenberg.

Anyone with information should call Detective Morlet at 842-8381 or Hilsenberg at 842-8767.

Montague -- MONTAGUE – A Montague man was arrested during the early morning hours on Thursday for allegedly murdering his wife, stated Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey.

Lukes Steven Ladewig, 30, was booked into the Siskiyou County Jail on charges of murder, domestic violence, assault with a deadly weapon (not a firearm) and probation violation. He is being held without bail.

Siskiyou County District Attorney Kirk Andrus said Ladewig was on probation for a previous domestic violence conviction involving his wife.

According to a press release issued by the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), on Wednesday morning, deputies responded to a Montague residence upon receiving a report of a 30-year-old unresponsive woman (whose name is being withheld) in medical distress.

Deputies found the victim in the bathroom of her home with visible injuries to her body. Emergency medical responders on scene were able to establish a pulse and the victim was transported to Fairchild Medical Center for treatment. The victim was subsequently transferred to Mercy Medical Center in Redding.

Despite efforts by medical personnel to save her life during the day and nighttime hours, she was pronounced dead on Thursday morning, stated the release.

During the initial investigation, deputies and a sheriff’s supervisor reportedly detected inconsistencies in the account of events provided by Ladewig, the victim’s husband. They noted some concerns about Ladewig’s statements regarding events leading up to his call to emergency responders.

Detectives from the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes’ Unit were summoned and conducted interviews, served a search warrant, gathered evidence and subsequently developed probable cause to believe that the victim’s injuries and ultimately, her death, resulted from a domestic violence-related incident at the home, the release alleged.

Ladewig was arrested in Redding by sheriff’s detectives and transported back to Siskiyou County to be booked in the jail.

A forensic autopsy will occur within the next few days to determine the exact cause of death.

According to Andrus, in 2001, Ladewig was convicted of corporal injury to a spouse/cohabitant and dissuading a witness from reporting a crime. He served a prison term in 2002 for domestic violence.

In February of 2010, Ladewig pleaded guilty to more charges of corporal injury to a spouse/cohabitant and dissuading a witness from reporting a crime. He was on probation when he allegedly committed the offenses Wednesday morning.

“We would like to offer our sincere condolences and prayers to the family and friends of the crime victim,” stated Lopey in the release.

“This is a good opportunity to remind all Siskiyou County residents that domestic violence continues to be a grave concern for all public safety and service agencies and we all share the responsibility of taking measures to stop this terrible crime, which is most often perpetrated against women.”

According to statistics compiled by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, almost one-third of female homicide victims that are reported in police records are killed by an intimate partner.

To report domestic violence to law enforcement, call the SCSO Dispatch Center at 841-2900.

To speak to a domestic violence counselor, free of charge, call the Siskiyou Domestic Violence & Crisis Center’s (SDV&CC) confidential hotline number 1-877-842-4068.

“The SCDV&CC has a trained and caring staff whose sheltering, counseling and support services are second to none,” stated Lopey in the release.

A Montague man charged with the murder of his wife pleaded not guilty in a Siskiyou County courtroom on Friday, Oct. 19. Lukes Steven Ladewig, 30, is being held without bail at the Siskiyou County Jail.
An autopsy conducted on Katie Pierce yesterday at the Shasta County Coroner’s office showed the 30 year old’s injuries were consistent with blunt force injuries to the head, according to a press release from Jayme Lynch, spokesperson from the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department.

Pierce’s death was ruled a homicide by forensic pathologist Susan Comfort on Wednesday, Oct. 24, Lynch reported.

Ladewig was on probation for a previous domestic violence conviction involving his wife when he was arrested and charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, said Siskiyou County District Attorney Kirk Andrus.

Ladewig was arrested on Oct. 18 at Mercy Medical Center Redding where his wife was taken after being discovered on the floor of her bathroom with visible injuries to her body, according the Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the couple’s Kuck Road residence in Montague the day before on a report of an unresponsive woman at about 8 a.m. Emergency medical responders were able to establish a pulse and Pierce was transported to Fairchild Medical Center, then Mercy Redding for treatment.

Pierce died on the morning of Oct. 18, and Ladewig was arrested soon after when detectives developed probable cause to believe her injuries were caused in a domestic violence incident, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Andrus said in 2001, Ladewig was convicted of corporal injury to a spouse/cohabitant and dissuading a witness from reporting a crime. He also served a prison term in 2002 for domestic violence.

“We would like to again offer our sincere condolences and prayers to the family and friends of Katie Pierce,” said Sheriff Jon Lopey in a statement Thursday morning.
“I would like to again remind my fellow citizens that domestic violence continues to be a major concern for all public safety and social service agencies and we all share the responsibility of taking measures to stop this terrible crime, which is most often perpetrated against women and too often, children are present during these episodes of violence.”
Anyone experiencing domestic violence should contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center 24 hours a day at 841-2900.

Lopey said another valuable resource is the Siskiyou County Domestic Violence Crisis Center], which can be contacted 24 hours a day, toll free, at their confidential hotline number 1-877-842-4068.

“The SCDVCC has a trained and caring staff whose sheltering, counseling, and support services are second to none,” Lopey said.

Anyone with information concerning the Ladewig case is asked to contact Detective Morlet at 842-8381, or Detective Sergeant Hilsenberg at 842-8767.

Ladewig held to answer to murder charges

YREKA – Siskiyou County Superior Court Judge Karen Dixon ruled last Thursday that Lukes Steven Ladewig – the Montague man accused of murdering his 30-year-old wife Katie Pierce in October – will be held to answer to the charges.

The ruling followed Ladewig’s preliminary hearing in the Siskiyou County Superior Court during which Deputy District Attorney Monique Neese and Ladewig’s public defender Andy Marx questioned Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) officials about the homicide investigation.

Ladewig, 30, is charged with murder and dissuading a witness from reporting a crime as well as special allegations for causing serious bodily injury. He faces a series of other special allegations for previous domestic violence-related convictions.

An autopsy performed shortly after Pierce’s death confirmed that she died on Oct. 18 as a result of blunt force trauma to the head which caused bleeding on the brain. Ladewig was arrested shortly after her death.

Authorities responded to the couple’s residence on Oct. 17 following a 9-1-1 call.

SCSO Detective Yves Pike testified in court that when he arrived at the scene, he observed Pierce lying on the bathroom floor unconscious and she appeared to have bruising on her face.

She was transported to Fairchild Medical Center and then air-lifted to Mercy Medical Center in Redding.

Pike testified that he observed vomit, blood and other bodily fluids on various items in the household and “signs that there had been a struggle.” In addition, he stated that in the kitchen garbage can, he discovered pieces of broken glass and small rocks that were consistent with the ones in the couple’s fish tank.

SCSO Detective Jacque Morlet testified that he questioned Ladewig while Pierce was on life support in the Redding hospital. He said Ladewig had a swollen lip, some scratches and abrasions on his knuckles – an injury that Morlet said Ladewig explained was the result of an accident while he was sweeping.

He told the court that Ladewig initially denied striking his wife, and later stated that he and Pierce had a mutual fight because she had consumed alcohol.

“[Ladewig] did not appear to have much remorse for his actions,” Morlet stated. “He admitted to slapping, shoving, pushing and kicking Katie,” and in the midst of the altercation, Ladewig reportedly admitted to pushing her toward the couple’s fish tank.

Morlet told the court that Ladewig stated during the interview, “I did not mean for this to happen. I’m sorry, fellas. I don’t want to be the person who killed my #!@#&*% wife.”

Ladewig was notified that Pierce was brain dead and she would be taken off life support per his instruction, Morlet testified.

Morlet told the court, “Ladewig said emphatically, ‘She is dead. They are going to pull the plug tomorrow and that is basically my decision.’”

Pierce was pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center on Oct. 18.

Following the investigators’ testimony, Neese stated, “I believe The People have shown that this was not an act of self-defense … He may have not intended for her to die but he was the cause of those internal injuries that resulted in her death.”

Marx argued, “This was a mutual combat situation – a heated, passionate argument.”

While SCSO Lt. Mark Hilsenberg testified at the hearing that the toxicology report conducted during the autopsy indicated that Pierce did not have alcohol in her system, Marx pointed out that the blood clot which resulted from her brain bleed was not tested for alcohol. He said if it was it would have indicated whether alcohol was in her system at the time of the altercation.

Dixon stated that whether or not Ladewig’s alleged actions were initially intended to be carried out for the purpose of self-defense, they went above and beyond what was necessary to protect himself.

She ruled that he will be held to answer to the charges and she ordered for Ladewig to continue to be held in the Siskiyou County Jail without bail. Dixon scheduled him to reappear in court on Dec. 18 for further proceedings.

According to Siskiyou County District Attorney Kirk Andrus, Ladewig served a prison term in 2002 for a domestic violence conviction and he was on probation for a separate domestic violence conviction involving his wife at the time of this incident.
