Have you seen Gena Chiodo?
Illinois police are trying to locate a Calumet City woman who has been missing for nearly a week.

According to Calumet City Police Department, Gena Chiodo, a 42-year-old hairdresser, was last seen on Saturday. Her vehicle and keys were found at her home.

Investigators spent all day Thursday searching for evidence inside Gena Chiodo's house and are still at the location today. Police have not said what, if anything, they have found.

Chiodo lives in the house, which is located in the 1300 block of Prince, with her boyfriend. Authorities have not said if they have spoken with the boyfriend or if they suspect foul play in Chiodo's disappearance.

Michelle Mack, a former roommate of Chiodo's, said she found out about her friend's disappearance when police came to her home to speak to her.

"Her job sent a wellness check to my house because she had previously lived at my house," Mack told The Huffington Post. "[Her employer was concerned] because she was [allegedly] in an abusive relationship. I then sent police to where she was living with her boyfriend."

Mack said she does not believe her friend is still alive. She has probably been killed and we are trying to find her body," the distraught woman said.

Friends of Chiodo are organizing a community search for her. People interested in joining the search effort are asked to meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Knights of Columbus in Lansing, Ill..

Chiodo. is 5' 4, weighs 145 pounds and has brown eyes and blond hair. Police said they are uncertain what clothing she was wearing at the time she went missing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Calumet City Police Department or the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force.

"I just hope they find here and she's alright," Chiodo's neighbor, Sharon Meek, told nwitimes.com.

As Calumet City Police continue to search for a woman who went missing this week from her south suburban home, some friends said they don't expect them to find her alive.

"At this point we just want to find her body," said Michelle Mack, a friend of the missing woman, Gena Chiodo. When asked if she expected to find 42-year-old Chiodo alive, Mack replied, "We don't."

Chiodo, who is a hair stylist at a salon in Munster, Ind., was last seen Saturday at her house in the 1300 block of Price. Police said her vehicle and house keys were found at the home.

"We're moving towards a criminal investigation," said Police Chief Edward Gilmore on Friday. "We are searching around the house using dogs and a helicopter to help us in the search."

Chiodo stands about 5 feet, 4 inches and weighs about 145 pounds. She has brown eyes and blonde hair.

Friends said they thought it was strange to see Chiodo's car and her boyfriend's car in the driveway for several days.

Mack said she was there when Chiodo's boyfriend went willingly with police to provide information.

"They took him out of here Wednesday," said Mack. "He was hiding in there peeking out the window."

Police did not comment on whether Chiodo's boyfriend was a suspect.

Meanwhile, friends insist Chiodo would have contacted someone if she was still alive.

"We know Gina would not go anywhere and not get a hold of somebody," said friend Donna Wuchter.

Anyone with information about Chiodo's disappearance is asked to contact the Calumet City Police at 708-425-1612 or 708-868-2500. Calumet City police are searching for a woman who went missing this week from her south suburban home.

CALUMET CITY, Ill.—
Calumet City Police are asking for help finding a woman who's been missing since last weekend.

Police are asking volunteers to meet up at 9:15 Saturday morning in the Old River Oaks Ford parking lot in Calumet City.

They're going to conduct a ground search, focusing on the forest preserves not far from Gena’s home.

Police say her car is still at her home and her keys were in the house.

Investigators have been at that home overnight but no other details about Chiodo's disappearance have been released.

Gena Chiodo, 42, was last seen Saturday at her home in the 1300 block of Price Street in Calumet City.

Friends and relatives of Gena are preparing for the worst, they said disappearing for nearly a week is not in her character.

Patricia Nasella said “She's not just wandering somewhere. She wouldn't be that type of a person. Somebody hurt her bad.”

Underneath the music, the mood was somber Friday. At the Knights of Columbus in Lansing where friends of Gena Chiodo gathered with her cousins from out of town.

Gena’s cousin Robert Marion is asking that “If anyone knows anything, step up to the plate. That's all we ask. Help us find our kin.”

Her keys were inside her house. Her car still parked in the driveway. But no one's seen or heard from the 42 year old Gena Chiodo, since last Saturday.

When the hairstylist didn't show up for work, this week her co-workers requested a wellbeing check.

They were concerned. Friends believe she was in an abusive relationship-- but refused to leave.

Donna Wuchter, a friend of Gena, said “She never had a bad thing come out of her mouth. For this to happen to her. I don’t know what to say. I just can't believe it's happening.”

Crime scene investigators, combed through the home Gena shared with her boyfriend of one year in the in the 1300 block of Price in Calumet City.

A police helicopter hovered overhead. Officers also searched nearby woods.

Calumet City Police Chief Edward Gilmore said “While we would like to find her alive and well, we have to go off the presumption foul play may be involved.”

Police have questioned Gena's boyfriend.

The situation, unsettling for neighbors. Sharon Meek, “Calumet is real quiet. This is a shock to us.”

I don't think it's a stretch who killed her. Take him in and rough him up the way he roughed her up and I bet he w/sing like a bird. These abusers are really cowards that pick on women who are not able to defend themselves.

Update:12/2/12: Body found, awaiting autopsy w/will be done 12/3.Officials ID body as Gena' s Empty Police have 'person of interest' in missing woman case

CALUMET CITY | Police said Saturday they have a “person of interest” in the case of a Calumet City woman who has not been seen for a week, and some of the woman's friends say they are hopeful police will solve the case.

Police Chief Edward L. Gilmore said the investigation into the disappearance of Gena Chiodo, 42, who worked at a Munster hair salon, took a new direction Friday night when they learned of an individual they wish to question.

Gilmore would not say who the person might be, or whether they have been able to talk with that person as of Saturday afternoon.

Early in the day Saturday, Gilmore said, “We still hope we will find (Chiodo) alive,” although he added later that the presumption was largely because a body has not been found. “The longer she is missing, the less likely it is we will find her” alive.

The disappearance has caused several family and friends of Chiodo to offer their help in finding her. Saturday morning, about 40 people gathered at the old River Oaks Ford auto dealership at 281 River Oaks Drive, willing to assist police in searching nearby forest preserves for any traces of her.

Cindy Bogucki, who said she has been a friend to Chiodo for more than 10 years, said she could easily come up with 200 people willing to assist police.

While some people gathered at the Calumet City police station Saturday afternoon were frustrated, Bogucki said she was trying to remain optimistic.

“I feel like we’re moving toward something, it seems like the police know something that could let them solve this case,” she said, adding of Gilmore himself, “He has been incredible, he feels for all of us.”

For his part, Gilmore said he has been impressed by the willingness of her friends to help police with the search.

At Chiodo’s home on Price Street, officers with the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force, which is now the lead agency in the investigation, could be seen hanging around and removing items from the house. None of those officers would comment on the case.

Chiodo's friend Debbie Wood said she fears the worst has happened because of the length of time since she has heard from Chiodo. “Gena would not 'not' call us unless something was wrong,” Wood said.

Chiodo had established close relationships with many of her salon clients, some of whom were among the people who were willing to help search for her on Saturday.

“I'm willing to spend whatever amount of my time it takes to help find her,” said Lansing resident Cheryl Cheek.

Chiodo is described as a white woman, 5-feet, 4-inches tall and about 145 pounds, with brown eyes and blond hair. Police say she was last seen Oct. 13 at her home. Her automobile, along with keys, were found at the house.

Boyfriend charged with killing missing Calumet City woman. No body found but police describe bloody house; friends continue search

October 22, 2012

Friends of Gena Chiodo on Sunday tried to follow the steps of the man charged in her death.

Some examined the muddy banks of a lake, speculating about where it would be easiest to conceal a body; others wondered how far a 250-pound man could carry her in the middle of the night. Most debated whether he would hide her body close to his home or on the outskirts of suburban Chicago.

While Chiodo's friends and family continued to look for her body Sunday, Chiodo's boyfriend, Donald Clark, remained in jail.

"We just can't sit all day wondering," said her friend Patti Nasella. "We know we are never going to see her again, but we need to get her back."

On Sunday, a Cook County judge ordered Clark, 42, held without bail. He is charged with first-degree murder and covering up the crime.

Prosecutors leveled charges without locating Chiodo's body, but they described a bloody scene that police encountered at her Calumet City home Wednesday.

Police found blood splattered on a treadmill and red stains around the base of the toilet bowl in a first-floor bathroom, prosecutors said. There was blood soaked into a bedroom pillow and blood dried on lingerie that police found in the garbage, they added.

Police didn't find Chiodo in the house, but they did find Clark, the victim's live-in boyfriend.

Prosecutors said blood was splattered on the walls, a desk and a treadmill in a weight room on the first floor.

The smell of bleach was strong in the bathroom, which appeared to have been cleaned recently, prosecutors sad. Still, police spotted blood beneath the toilet bowl, prosecutors said. There was no shower curtain hanging in the bathroom, but police would find one covered in blood in the garbage behind the house, prosecutors said.

In one bedroom, blood stained the bedding, and in another police found a shattered mirror. A pool of blood was observed on a carpet inside the backdoor landing, according to prosecutors.

Bloodied lingerie and a shower curtain, a necklace, two cellphones with missing memory cards and picture frames, all broken, were recovered from the trash outside Chiodo's house, prosecutors said.

After Clark had been taken into custody, he made incriminating statements while speaking on the phone, Assistant State's Attorney Angela Carlisle said. He told his brother he "woke up and she was in his arms covered in blood" and that he tried to give Chiodo mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. He also talked about telling police where the body is if he "could get a deal," Carlisle said.

Clark also told police that the two had a fight Sunday night, prosecutors said. Clark said he went to sleep, and when he awoke, his girlfriend was gone. But Chiodo's car sat in the driveway; her clothes and shoes inside her closet, prosecutors said.

Clark, who has been convicted of domestic battery and residential burglary, is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday in Markham.

Clark's attorney declined to comment following the hearing on whether Clark will plead guilty or not guilty.

"I will say, right now we don't have a body," Michael O'Meara said. "It's interesting he has been charged ... without a body."

The search for Chiodo's body started with hope Sunday.

About 20 of her friends searched the perimeter of Powder Horn Lake, knowing that Chiodo and Clark would go fishing there on occasion and that the area was a well-known drinking spot. But the group quickly realized that a recent rainfall had ruined any chance to examine footprints or vehicle skid marks. Parts of the bank were so muddy it was hard to walk without sinking.

Still, about 40 minutes in, it looked like their search had turned up its first clue: a black plastic box washed up on shore. But the group concluded it was too light to hold a body.

Their search would continue at least three more locations, turning up other false starts as well.

Friends describe Chiodo as a happy-go-lucky person who would laugh easily. She had moved to the Chicago area from Michigan about 10 years ago to continue a romantic relationship. She found work as a hairstylist at a salon in Munster, Ind.

Chiodo entered into a relationship more than a year ago with Clark, a man her friends describe as aggressive, controlling and belligerent. But for Chiodo, he met a deep-seated emotional need of hers, friends say.

"Gena wanted to be loved," her friend Michelle Mack said. "If anyone would pay attention to her, she hung on for dear life."

Still, to her close friends the signs that Chiodo was being abused during the relationship were clear. She had bruises on her body, she stopped seeing her friends at the Knights of Columbus Hall that they often frequented, and her personality seemed more subdued, friends said.

Nobody found Chiodo's body Sunday, but her friends still grapple with the fact that they have to search at all.

"I can't believe we're doing this," Nasella said. "This is like a horrible Lifetime movie come to life and not the one you want to happen."

Bond denied for boyfriend charged with murder of Calumet City woman

BY JON SEIDEL Staff Reporter/jseidel@suntimes.com October 21, 2012 4:04PM
Updated: October 21, 2012 9:12PM

A Cook County judge refused bail Sunday for the boyfriend of a missing Calumet City woman after a prosecutor described the bloody scene at her home where police said they found him Wednesday.

Assistant State’s Attorney Angela Carlisle also said Donald E. Clark, 42, spoke on the phone with his brother while in police custody and talked about telling police where they could find Gena Chiodo’s body “as long as he could get a deal.”

After court Clark’s attorney said he’s disappointed Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil chose to hold his client without bail. He made no prediction as to how Clark will plea Tuesday when he’s expected back in court. He said only that defendants are innocent until proven guilty.

Meanwhile, a man who would describe himself only as a spokesman for Chiodo’s family expressed his gratitude to investigators who have tried to locate her after she went missing last week.

“We wish the Clark family will show mercy on us and let us know where Gena is so we can put her to rest,” he said.

Authorities announced Saturday Clark had been charged with first-degree murder and concealment of a homicide in connection with Chiodo’s disappearance.

Chiodo, 42, was last heard from Oct. 13. Patty Nasella, a longtime family friend, has said she believed Chiodo’s relationship with her boyfriend of 13 months was dysfunctional. She said Chiodo wished her a happy birthday when they talked on the phone Oct. 13.

The next day, Nasella said she texted Chiodo to invite her out for dinner but never heard back.

Calumet City Police went to Chiodo’s home Wednesday in the 1300 block of Price Avenue after her co-workers and friends said they were worried because Chiodo hadn’t shown up for work for three straight days, Carlisle said.

Police repeatedly knocked on the door, she said, until they saw the curtains inside the home move. They forced their way in and found Clark coming out of a back bedroom. Carlisle said they searched the home but didn’t find Chiodo.

Instead, Carlisle said, they found blood spatter on the walls, desk and treadmill in a first-floor room used as an office and weight room. They found blood under the toilet bowl in a first-floor bathroom that smelled of bleach, was missing a shower curtain and seemed to have been recently cleaned.

There was blood on a comforter, pillow and towel in the first-floor master bedroom, the prosecutor said, and a small pool of blood was on a carpet inside the back-door landing.

Upstairs police found a large mirror had been broken in another bedroom. There was a broken picture frame and part of a bloody shower curtain rod in the kitchen. Officers also found a bucket and mop and an empty bottle of bleach.

In the garbage cans behind the house Carlisle said police found a rug with a large blood stain on it, a bloody lingerie skirt, a broken necklace and ashtray and pieces of broken furniture, a plastic shower curtain covered in blood, two broken cell phones with SIM cards missing, broken picture frames and a bloody bath mat.

Clark told police he and Chiodo had a fight Oct. 14 and he went to sleep, Carlisle said. When he woke up at noon he said Chiodo was gone and he hadn’t seen her since.

However, the prosecutor said Clark’s license plate was run by Chicago police that day at 105th and Michigan at about 9:55 a.m., contradicting his statement.

Chiodo’s car was still in the driveway when police searched the house, Carlisle said. Her clothes and shoes were still in her closet. Police also found her birth certificate and Social Security card, and several of her credit cards were in a shredder in the kitchen.

Her car keys were in a pair of men’s gym shoes that had blood on the soles and toe areas, the prosecutor said.

Clark had a phone conversation with his brother after his arrest on Thursday, Carlisle said. He said he woke up and Chiodo was in his arms, covered in blood, and he said he tried to give her mouth-to-mouth.

That’s also when the prosecutor said Clark talked about telling police where to find the body in exchange for a deal.

Clark has previously been convicted of two armed robberies and residential burglary, Carlisle said. He also has a 2011 domestic battery conviction for punching a former girlfriend in the face. The victim in that case — for which Carlisle said he’s still serving conditional discharge — said he threatened to kill her several times.

After court Sunday Clark’s attorney, Michael O’Meara, said the hearing was the first time he heard the “serious allegations” prosecutors are making against his client. He said he wanted the judge to set bail, which would give Clark a chance to get out of jail.

“We are disappointed

Cal City police using cadaver dog to search for Chiodo's body

10 hours ago • Gregory Tejeda Times Correspondent

CALUMET CITY | Calumet City police on Thursday brought in a cadaver dog to continue the search for a missing hairstylist believed killed by her boyfriend.

Police Chief Edward Gilmore said a group of officers was using a dog on loan from the Chicago Police Department trained specifically to detect the scent of a corpse to search Thursday through wooded areas in Calumet City near the home of Gena Chiodo, 42.

Donol E. Clark, Chiodo's boyfriend, was arrested Saturday at the home on the 1300 block of Price Street. The 42-year-old Clark has been charged with her murder and concealment of a homicide.

Gilmore refused to say exactly where police were searching. “We don’t want other people coming in and trampling the area,” he said.

Friends and relatives of Chiodo searched over the weekend and in recent days. Gilmore said the number of volunteers searching appears to have declined in recent days.

Chiodo, who worked as a hairstylist in Munster, was reported missing Oct. 17. When Calumet City police made a well-being check of her house, police found blood in several rooms along with broken objects, indicating a struggle.

Police said they found at the house Clark, who told them Chiodo left a couple of days earlier following a quarrel. Chiodo’s clothes were in the home, and her car was parked outside.

State's attorneys said inconsistencies in Clark’s account made them suspicious.

Clark is being held at the Cook County Jail without bond. He is scheduled to appear in court again Nov. 9.

Calumet City man indicted in slaying of girlfriend

November 09, 2012 1:45 pm • Gregory Tejeda Times Correspondent

MARKHAM | A Calumet City man accused of killing his live-in girlfriend, a Munster hairstylist, learned Friday he had been indicted by a grand jury.

Donol Clark, 42, appeared in court before Associate Judge Darron Bowden for a preliminary hearing, only to learn that a grand jury had returned an indictment against him. He is accused in the homicide of Gena Chiodo, who worked at a Munster hair salon.

That indictment charges Clark with two counts of murder and one charge of concealment of a homicide. Prior to the indictment, Clark had faced one count of murder.

Clark remained silent during his appearance before Bowden, and also during a brief appearance before Judge Kathleen Panozzo, who is hearing a case related to Clark’s possible violation of conditional discharge for a domestic battery conviction involving a previous girlfriend.

Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Tom Driscoll said Friday’s court activity was part of the criminal procedure, and that the next court hearing Nov. 27, “will have more activity.”

That hearing is Clark’s scheduled arraignment, at which time he will enter his plea to the charges and will be assigned to a judge for his eventual trial.

Clark’s attorney, Michael O’Meara, said Friday’s court activity was anticipated. He also introduced to the judge attorney Philip Coffey, who identified himself as a co-counsel hired to assist O’Meara with Clark’s defense.

Clark, being held at the county jail without bond, faces criminal charges for what police in Calumet City have said was a fight between Clark and Chiodo at the house they lived in on Price Street.

Three days after the fight, police visited the house because a missing person’s report had been filed with police in Hammond.

Police have said the officers found traces of blood and broken objects in several rooms. Clark told police he had a quarrel with Chiodo and that she had left on her own, but police and the state’s attorney’s office have said there are inconsistencies in his account that make them skeptical.

Clark faces criminal charges even though as of Friday, police have yet to find Chiodo’s remains.

Several of her friends have volunteered to search wooded areas near Chiodo’s home, but police have said they have not uncovered any clues.

“We’re continuing to follow up leads, but unfortunately we have not found the missing young lady,” said Calumet City Police Deputy Chief Dan Zorzi.

Boyfriend enters not guilty plea in death of Cal City woman

November 27, 2012 1:45 pm • Gregory Tejeda Times Correspondent

MARKHAM | Donol Clark entered a not guilty plea Tuesday in connection with the slaying of his live-in girlfriend, Gena Chiodo, whose body has yet to be discovered more than a month after her disappearance.

Michael O’Meara, who is an attorney for Clark, entered the plea in Cook County Circuit Court on behalf of his client, who faces two counts of murder and one count of concealment of a homicide.

Clark, 42, was living with Chiodo, a Munster hairstylist, at her home in Calumet City at the time of his arrest last month. He had his case assigned to Judge Frank Zelezinski.

O’Meara, along with co-counsel Philip Coffey, filed a legal motion to begin the discovery process by which evidence is exchanged. Zelezinski scheduled a status hearing for Jan. 3.

Cook County assistant state’s attorneys Thomas Driscoll and Patrick McGuire had no objections to the court date.

Clark said nothing during his two-minute court appearance. He is being held without bond at the Cook County Jail.

About 14 people who identified themselves as family or friends of Chiodo — one of whom wore a T-shirt reading “I Love You Gena” — were at the courthouse Tuesday to witness the legal proceedings.

Police in Calumet City have said they suspect there was a fight at the house on Price Street between Clark and Chiodo and they think Chiodo was killed, even though she remains missing and several searches of forest preserves near her home have uncovered no physical evidence.

Police and the Cook County state’s attorney’s office have said Clark claims the two fought, and she left voluntarily. But they also cite inconsistencies in his account that make them skeptical of what he says.

(CBS) – The discovery of a body in rural Lake County, Ind. on Sunday prompted investigators there to wonder whether it could be that of missing Calumet City woman Gena Chiodo, whose boyfriend has been charged with her murder.

Calumet City police in October found a great deal of blood and evidence at the Price Avenue home Chiodo shared with Donal Clark — but no body. Clark was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and concealment of a homicide.

The body found Sunday was in a wooded area near U.S. 41 and Route 2 and was wrapped in a sheet or comforter, police said. Lake County authorities reached out to Calumet City police because they were familiar with the high-profile Chiodo case, Calumet City Assistant Police Chief Dan Zorzi told CBS 2.

The body — discovered by a hunter around 2 p.m. — was expected to be transported to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Dental records will be used to confirm whether it is Chiodo, Zorzi said.

Calumet City Police Chief Edward Gilmore stressed Sunday evening it was too early to draw conclusions. An autopsy would likely be performed Monday, he said.

“In this case, patience is what is needed here,” he told CBS 2’s Mai Martinez. “Time will tell if the autopsy is completed as to which way the investigation will go. It may be totally unrelated to Calumet City and our missing person.”

Calumet City police went to Chiodo’s home in October after her co-workers and friends reported the 42-year-old cosmetologist had not shown up to work for days. Finding blood stains in multiple places, they immediately took Clark, also 42, into custody.

Clark has previously been convicted of two armed robberies and residential burglary and has a 2011 domestic battery conviction for punching a former girlfriend in the face, prosecutors have said.

Calumet City police for weeks have been following up on periodic tips about the whereabouts of Chiodo’s body, Zorzi said.

“Obviously, we’ve been hoping all along for the family’s sake that we could find Gena and put some closure on it for them,” he said.

Body Found in Lake Could May Be Linked to Calumet City Missing Person Case
Police are waiting for autopsy results

By Christian Farr | Sunday, Dec 2, 2012 | Updated 11:04 PM CST

Lake County Police contacted Calumet City Police Chief Ed Gilmore because of his investigation into the disappearance of Gena Chiodo back in October.

Calumet City Police said they were contacted Sunday afternoon about an unidentified body found in Lake County that may belong to a missing person from a high-profile case.

"Right now, I know it was found by somebody who is supposed to be a hunter and was in the woods" Calumet Police Chief Ed Gilmore told NBC News Sunday night. "The body was found wrapped in a comforter, it was not burried. It was just laying there in the woods."

Gilmore was contacted by Lake County Police because of his investigation into the disappearance of Gena Chiodo back in October.

Friends searched for the 42-year-old hairstylist. But within days of Chiodo's missing person report, and a search of her home, police arrested and charged 42-year-old Donal Clark with her murder. However, Chiodo's body was never found.

Gilmore will not say if Sunday's Lake County discovery is connected to Chiodo's murder until an autopsy has been completed. He said the results of the Lake County Coroner's Office will be compared with medical and dental records from their case.

The autopsy is expected to be completed by Monday.

December 3, 2012 (CALUMET CITY, Ill.) (WLS) -- Officials have identified the body of a woman found in a wooded area near Lowell, Ind., as 42-year-old Gena Chiodo.

"Positive identification was made this afternoon and the deceased is Gena Chiodo," said Lake County Indiana Coroner Merrilee Frey.

Frey said dental records helped identify Chiodo.

Because of evidence of foul play in her home, police charged her boyfriend, Donal Clark, with murder and concealment of a homicide. Chiodo was last seen in October, and the remains were found Sunday near Route 2 and U.S. 41.

"We believe she was killed in residence by her boyfriend and transported. In all probability she's been in that field since, wrapped in a sheet," said Chief Edward Gilmore with Calumet City police.

Chiodo's friends tried to cope with the news on Monday.

"There is no peace there is no rest. I am a spiritual person, so the day she took her last breath, God had her anyways," said Michelle Mack, a former roommate.

"It sounds really bizarre, but I wanted her home for Christmas. I mean, I didn't get her to talk to, but we have her body, she's home," said Pat Nasella, friend.

Post by raine1953 Wed Dec 05, 2012 12:21 am

A badly decomposed body found in a wooded area outside Lowell, Ind., is that of a missing woman whose boyfriend was charged with her murder in October, officials said.

The body was identified as Gena Chiodo of Calumet City, according to the Lake County Coroner's Office.

Chiodo's body was discovered by hunters on Sunday, about 1,500 feet southeast of Indiana Highway 2, naked and wrapped in a comforter. The body, officials said, was in an advanced state of decomposition and dental records were use for identification.

According to Jessica Metros, a spokeswoman for the coroner's office, Chiodo's autopsy revealed multiple external and internal traumatic injuries due to assault. The injuries included multiple stab wounds and blunt force injuries Metros said.

"Right now, they're calling it a homicide," Metros told The Huffington Post.

Chiodo, a 42-year-old hairdresser, was last seen Oct. 13. Her employer contacted police and asked them to conduct a wellness check on her when she failed to show up for work.

"[Her employer was concerned] because she was [allegedly] in an abusive relationship," Chiodo's close friend Michelle Mack, told HuffPost.

The Calumet City Police Department said that when they questioned Chiodo's boyfriend, Donal Clark, he said he had not seen Chiodo since Oct. 14, when they had a fight. However, outside Chiodo's home which she shared with Clark, authorities said they found garbage cans with bloodied lingerie, a blood-stained rug and bath mat, broken furniture, and a plastic shower curtain covered in blood. Blood spatter was also allegedly found on a pair of Clark's shoes.

Even though police did not have a body, they charged Clark with first-degree murder in Chiodo's death. He also faces charges for concealment of a homicide. At Clark's first appearance in Cook County criminal court, Assistant State Attorney Angela Carlisle said that at the time of Clark's arrest, he was asleep inside the blood-splattered home he shared with Chiodo.

Following his arrest, court documents state, Clark allegedly told his brother that he woke up to find Chiodo in his arms covered in blood and that he would tell police where they could find her body if they cut him a deal.

The deal did not materialize and despite multiple searches, Chiodo's body went undiscovered until Sunday.

"We believe that she was killed in her residence by her boyfriend and then transported somehow to this field where she was found yesterday. In all probability, she's been in that field since he committed the homicide," said Calumet City Police Chief Ed Gilmore.

Clark is scheduled to appear in court again on Jan. 3.

Even before the positive identification was made, Chiodo's friend Elizabeth Mack had little doubt it would be Chiodo. "Today brought relief to a lot of people ... Thank you god for this," Mack wrote on her page Monday. "My heart goes out to her family. I feel like a weight has been lifted -- she can finally be at peace. I love you Gena."

MARKHAM | As a Calumet City man appeared in court Thursday on charges in the death of his live-in girlfriend, friends of the victim said they are planning a tribute to her memory – a benefit to attract attention to domestic violence.

Donol Clark, 42, who has been held at Cook County Jail without bond since his arrest in October, appeared in court Thursday for the first time since Gena Chiodo’s body was discovered in a forest preserve near Lowell. It was his first court appearance since entering a not guilty plea to charges of murder and concealment of a homicide.

The Cook County state’s attorney’s office provided defense attorneys with grand jury transcripts of the indictment proceedings. Also discussed among attorneys and Judge Frank Zelezinski was DNA evidence prosecutors plan to use against Clark.

Assistant State’s Attorney Patrick McGuire said it would take time to process it and comply with discovery, but Zelezinski said he’d be watching to make sure the process does not drag out.

“I don’t want to waste a lot of time,” he said.

Defense attorney Philip Coffey said that once the DNA evidence is received, he would want to have his own analysis done on behalf of Clark.

Another hearing was scheduled on Jan. 18.

Among those in the courtroom were more than a dozen friends and family of Chiodo who are preparing for a benefit in her name to be held Feb. 23 at the Knights of Columbus Council 3450 hall in Lansing.

That date was chosen because it would have been Chiodo’s 43rd birthday, Donna Wuchter said.

Wuchter said the event at the 178th Street and Lorenz Avenue location would feature a live band and silent auction, in hopes of raising money to be donated to organizations that work to reduce domestic violence.

Chiodo, who lived in Calumet City and worked at a Munster hair salon, was reported missing by her friends in October. When police made a check of her house, they found Clark. He told them she had run off days earlier, but police said they found physical evidence, including traces of blood, that indicated a struggle.

He was arrested although police did not find Chiodo’s body until early December when a hunter stumbled across human remains wrapped in a bed sheet in a wooded patch near U.S. 41. The remains were identified using dental records.

Friends to honor homicide victim with benefit

January 18, 2013 12:16 pm • Gregory Tejeda Times Correspondent

LANSING | Friends of a woman whom authorities believe was killed last year by her live-in boyfriend plan to celebrate what would have been her 43rd birthday with a benefit for domestic abuse organizations.

The benefit in honor of Gena Chiodo, who lived with Donol Clark in a house on Price Avenue in Calumet City, will be from 6 p.m. to midnight Feb. 23 at the Knights of Columbus Council 3450, 178th Street and Lorenz Avenue. Chiodo and her friends were regulars at the hall.

Tickets for the benefit are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. To purchase tickets, call (708) 895-7720 or go to the Knights of Columbus Hall.

The event will include food, live music by The Relics, a Northwest Indiana-based cover band, along with raffles and a silent auction.

Money raised from the event will be donated to various local organizations that deal with domestic abuse, said Donna Wuchter, a friend of Chiodo who has faithfully attended every court hearing for Clark. On Friday, Clark had another scheduled appearance at the 6th District Cook County Circuit Court in Markham.

In that brief court hearing, defense attorney Phillip Coffey and assistant state’s attorneys Patrick McGuire and Tom Driscoll discussed the exchange of information related to the case.

Those included lab reports that prosecutors have and defense attorneys want related to any alleged substances in Clark's body at the time of his arrest in October.

Another court hearing for Clark was scheduled for Feb. 22, the day before the benefit for Chiodo.

Chiodo, who lived in Calumet City and worked at a Munster hair salon, was reported missing to police by her friends in October. When police made a check of her house, they found Clark, who told them she had run off days earlier. But police at the time said they found physical evidence including traces of blood that indicated a struggle.

He was arrested at that time and has been held at the Cook County Jail without bond ever since, even though Chiodo’s body was not found until early December when a hunter stumbled across human remains wrapped in a bed sheet in a wooded area near U.S. 41 near Lowell.

Chiodo’s identify was confirmed through use of dental records.

In the four months since Gena Chiodo was killed, the aftermath has been an emotional nightmare for her family and friends.

But instead of succumbing to the grief, the group has come together to shine a light on domestic violence. And they’ll do it in the place they all considered their second home on what would’ve been Chiodo’s 43rd birthday.

The event, “Benefitting the Fight Against Domestic Violence: A Benefit in Memory of Gena Chiodo” at the Lansing Knights of Columbus Saturday night will be more than just friends getting together to hear Chiodo’s favorite band and bidding on silent auction items. It will also feature speakers from two domestic violence shelters, Haven House of Hammond and South Suburban Family Shelter of Homewood, Ill.

If one person is helped by their efforts, Patty Nasella will be satisfied. But as one of Chiodo’s best friends and a co-organizer of the event, she prays more domestic violence victims at least find comfort that people are out there for them.

“For whatever reason, (Chiodo) couldn’t reach out, so we don’t want anyone else to ever feel alone,” Nasella said. “I know (her death) has opened my eyes. If I suspect anything like that is ever happening to anyone, I know I’ll be a little more forceful (in helping them).”

The benefit has been nothing but a labor of love for all Chiodo’s friends and family. People who never knew her sunny personality or boisterous laugh have donated higher-end items for the auction, Nasella said, and the group’s favorite band, The Relics, have donated their time to the cause.
