(CNN) -- Amtrak police are searching for a retired San Francisco firefighter who went missing while traveling to visit family in Montreal.
Charlie Dowd, 69, left the Bay Area on Wednesday. He last spoke to his son by cell phone Thursday night, saying he was just outside of Denver, Colorado, his family said.
When Dowd's train arrived in Chicago on Friday, he was not on it. His luggage, cell phone and medication were found in his sleeping car, the family said on a Facebook page they set up to find him.
His daughter said Dowd is under a doctor's care and may need medical attention.
"He has medical needs and does need his medication for high blood pressure and heart disease," Jennifer Dowd told CNN affiliate KGO. "He is diabetic, but for medical reasons we obviously want him. We need to know where he is."
An Amtrak conductor may have spoken with Dowd early Friday near Omaha, Nebraska, one of the stops along the route, the family said.
Dowd was confused about his whereabouts and believed he was in an apartment, not on a train, and needed to find the front door, the family said.
Amtrak is investigating the possibility that Dowd got off the train during the night and may have gotten disoriented, and then didn't get back on, the family said.
The train stopped overnight in Fort Morgan, Colorado, and in the Nebraska cities of McCook, Holdrege, Hasting, Lincoln and Omaha.
Amtrak Police said they are working with local police departments at those stops and at BNSF, which owns the railroad.
Jennifer Dowd flew to Omaha on Sunday to look for her father. She said her brother, Kevin, went to Chicago and her cousin, Robert Stevens, is going to all of the stops along the route to search.
Charlie Dowd has gray hair and blue eyes, wears glasses, and is 5' 10" tall. The family asks anyone with information to contact Amtrak Police or the family at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Charles(Charlie, Dude)Dowd Empty Retired firefighter Charlie Dowd, 69 goes missing from Amtrak train/Family searches for man who disappeared from train/Body found in NE confirmed to be Charlie Dowd

Post by raine1953 Mon Sep 17, 2012 5:12 pm

OMAHA, Neb.—The family of a retired California man who disappeared from an Amtrak train somewhere between Denver and Chicago last week is searching for him in Nebraska.
It's not clear where 69-year-old Charlie Dowd left the train, but family members are focusing their initial efforts in Omaha and Lincoln because of unconfirmed reports that an Amtrak conductor may have talked to the retired firefighter Friday when the train was in Omaha.
Relatives said his health is a concern and he may have been disoriented when he got off the train because he has been without his medication since leaving the train.
His daughter, Jen Dowd, said she hopes the family can raise awareness of her father's disappearance by posting missing fliers in Omaha on Monday and in Lincoln on Tuesday.
"We need someone to have seen him and call in that report," she said.
Charlie Dowd, who lives in San Mateo, Calif., boarded the Amtrak train on Wednesday in the San Francisco area. His luggage arrived in Chicago on Friday, but he wasn't on the train.
The last time family members talked to him was Thursday evening when the train was in the Denver area. Dowd was travelling to visit family in Montreal, Canada.
Jen Dowd said she is frustrated that Amtrak officials and police don't seem to be doing more to search for her father.
"Amtrak police don't seem to be physically looking for him anywhere," Jen Dowd said.
Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said the
railroad's police department is conducting an active search for Charlie Dowd, and Amtrak officials are working with local police departments along the train's route.
Dowd is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds. He has blue eyes and gray hair.
Jen Dowd said that if her family's efforts in Omaha and Lincoln fail to produce any new information, they plan to move east later this week and trace the train's route to Chicago.
Anyone with information about Charlie Dowd's whereabouts is asked to call Amtrak police at (800) 331-0008.

Charles(Charlie, Dude)Dowd Empty San Mateo man missing along Amtrak route

Post by raine1953 Mon Sep 17, 2012 5:15 pm

Amtrak police were searching Sunday for a retired San Francisco firefighter who was last seen on an Amtrak train headed to Montreal to visit his grandchildren.
Charles "Charlie" Dowd, 69, of San Mateo boarded the California Zephyr train in Emeryville on Wednesday morning with plans to change trains in Chicago on Friday on his way to visit his son and grandchildren in Montreal.
His family last heard from him Thursday evening when he talked to his son in Denver, said Dowd's daughter, Jennifer Dowd of San Mateo.
Dowd was not on the train when it arrived in Chicago, although Amtrak staff found his luggage and cell phone in his sleeper car. Amtrak police called the numbers most recently dialed on his phone to contact his family Friday.
Dowd apparently spoke to a conductor, who described him as disoriented, around 5:15 a.m. Friday in Omaha, Neb., Jennifer Dowd said. That was the last time anyone reported seeing him, she said.
"This is not in my dad's character at all," she said. "This is a big mystery. We're very worried about him."
Dowd's family was headed to Omaha on Sunday to circulate missing-person flyers and work with police.
The gregarious, outgoing San Francisco native takes medication for restless leg syndrome that can occasionally make him confused, his daughter said.
"He just got approval from his doctor to take this trip," she said. "We never, ever would have let him travel cross-country if we thought he was in any danger."
Amtrak police are working with local police departments along the train route as well as Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway police, according to an Amtrak spokesman.
Dowd is 5 feet 10, 175 pounds, with gray hair and blue eyes. Police ask anyone with information to call (800) 331-0008.

Could something have happened in Chicago when he changed trains???? Or, maybe I am reading this wrong and he got confused and got off the train prior to Chicago? That's all I can think of.

How horrible for his family!!

SAN MATEO, Calif. — Five days after Charles Dowd, a 69-year-old San Mateo man, went missing from an Amtrak train headed from the Bay Area to Chicago, family members continue to be hopeful that he will be found safe.
Dowd's wife Patricia said Monday that their two children, Jennifer and Kevin, are in Omaha, Neb. to hand out fliers and organize a search party near where their father was last seen by an Amtrak train conductor on Thursday.
"They're trying to rally a really big search party in Omaha today," Dowd said.
The conductor who last saw her husband said he appeared disoriented and confused about his whereabouts, thinking that he was in an apartment rather than on a train and that he needed to find the front door, Dowd said.
The former San Francisco firefighter takes medication that can sometimes leave him temporarily disoriented, she said.
Her husband possibly got off the train at the station in Omaha to smoke a cigarette, but it wasn't clear if he ever got back on, she said.
When the train arrived in Chicago on Friday, the man's cellphone, luggage and medication were still on the train but he was nowhere to be found.
The family has been working with Amtrak officials and contacting hospitals and police departments along the train route to assist in the search.
The couple's two children will likely head to Lincoln, Neb. -- the next train stop on the way to Chicago -- to search the area on Tuesday.
Dowd said her family is understandably worried and frustrated at the lack of results that the search for her husband has generated so far.

"I don't know what kind of state I'm in," she said. "This happens to other people, not me."
The missing man is described as a white man with blue eyes and gray hair who is 5 feet 10 inches tall and 175 pounds.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call 911 and immediately relay the information to local [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] enforcement.

Would bet it's Klonepin he's taking. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

This is also an anti-anxiety med like Valium or Xanex so it sure can make one disoriented.

Charles(Charlie, Dude)Dowd Empty Family says Calif. man may have fallen from train

Post by raine1953 Tue Sep 18, 2012 4:21 pm

LINCOLN, Neb.—The family of a retired California firefighter who disappeared from an Amtrak train says it now appears that he may have fallen from the train somewhere in eastern Colorado or western Nebraska.
Charlie Dowd's family members had been organizing searches in Omaha and Lincoln for the 69-year-old San Mateo man because they believed he may have mistakenly gotten off the train at one of those stops.
But Jen Dowd said Tuesday Amtrak police told the family a passenger on the California-to-Chicago train saw Dowd standing near a train door Thursday night. Another passenger later found an exterior door ajar around 11 p.m. Thursday.
Jen Dowd says the search for her father will now focus on the 160 miles of track between Fort Morgan, Colo., and McCook, Neb.

confused Did the conductor see him Thursday night or Friday at 5:15 a.m.? It seems that someone who thought that he was in an apartment instead of on a train would have been given special attention by the train personnel...I think that it should have been assumed that he could possibly accidentally go through one of the train's exterior doors, thinking he was leaving an apartment...Just sayin'...

lisette, I read it as the conductor saw him at 5:15a.m. Friday morning. I agree with your thoughts that if he seemed confused at that time, he should have been given special attention. But, someone on that train had to have seen him on Thursday night, and that makes me wonder how he seemed then. I sure hope he did not try to get off of that train while it was moving. My thoughts are that maybe he got off in Chicago when the train stopped. A big place to get lost in.

This is a sad case. I hope we hear some good news that he has been found.

Charles(Charlie, Dude)Dowd Empty Missing man may have fallen from Amtrak train

Post by raine1953 Thu Sep 20, 2012 12:11 pm

A retired San Francisco firefighter missing nearly a week may have fallen off an Amtrak train he was riding from California to Chicago.
The family of Charlie Dowd, 69, said Wednesday that Amtrak police told them that a passenger saw Dowd about 10 p.m. on Sept. 13 near a train door. Another passenger found an exterior train door ajar about 11 p.m. that night but didn’t report it to Amtrak officials until the next morning.
“Amtrak officials are now saying that Dowd may have opened the exterior door and fallen out,” the family said in a statement posted on a Facebook page dedicated to finding Dowd.

The train was somewhere between Fort Morgan, Colo., and McCook, Neb., the family said, and searchers have been focused on the 160 miles of rail line between the two towns.
Watch US News videos on NBCNews.com
Yuma County, Colo., Sheriff Chad Day told NBC News that his agency on Tuesday finished searching by foot, ATV and even air the 40 miles of east-west track passing through his jurisdiction and had to tell the family and Amtrak police crews did not find Dowd.
“If I were in that position,” he said of Dowd’s family, “no one could do anything that would be enough. “Certainly from my perspective we did what we could do and that everything was searched that could be searched.”

Charles Dowd, 69, a retired San Francisco firefighter and business owner en route to visit his son and family in Montreal, Quebec, Canada is missing.

Neighboring agencies are doing the same, he said.
“I’m anxious right along with them,” Day said of Dowd’s family.
Dowd boarded the California Zephyr on Sept. 12 in Emeryville, Calif., with plans to change trains in Chicago on Sept. 14 and continue to Montreal to visit his son. But when the train pulled into the Chicago station, Dowd was not aboard, yet his luggage, cell phone and medication were.
Amtrak on Wednesday told NBC News it was continuing to coordinate searches with local agencies as it has done since Dowd was reported missing.
Family members say they are concerned because Dowd, a diabetic, could potentially be disoriented and needing his medication.
“He’s a really independent spirit and was doing this trip for the adventure,” his daughter, Jennifer Dowd, told NBCBayArea.com. “This is a shocking turn of events.”

The family last heard from Dowd by cell phone on Sept.13, she said.
The train conductor said a person who fits Dowd's description appeared disoriented and confused about his whereabouts, thinking he was in an apartment rather than on a train and that he needed to find the front door. Police have yet to confirm the man the conductor saw was actually Dowd.

Charles(Charlie, Dude)Dowd Empty Body of missing man, Charlie Dowd, reportedly found

Post by raine1953 Fri Sep 21, 2012 9:41 pm

The family of Charlie Dowd, the missing retired firefighter who went missing last week while on an Amtrak trip from California to Chicago, confirmed Friday night that his body has been found.
According to a statement on their Facebook page, “The Dowd family is saddened to share the news that the body of Charlie Dowd was found [Friday] in Haigler, NE, an area between Fort Morgan, CO and McCook, NE.”
Relatives believed Dowd may have fallen off the train sometime before it got to Chicago last Friday, because when the train arrived, his luggage, medication and phone were still on it.
Dowd was no where to be found.
His family had contacted countless hospitals along the route, including one in Galesburg, Illinois.
“They’re thinking that Charles got off the Amtrak train and then didn’t make it back on the train,” Bryan Plummer, an ER worker in Galesburg told News 8 after speaking with the family this past weekend. “They’re concerned that he’s wandering around an Amtrak depot… and somebody can help find him and bring him home.”
Dowd had been planning to transfer to another Amtrak train in Chicago last Friday and head to Canada to see his son in Montreal.
“The body was spotted by a BNSF railway worker and immediately reported to the authorities,” the family’s post on Facebook Friday went on to read. “While the family is devastated, they would like to express their gratitude for the many prayers, support, and messages posted to the Charlie Dowd Facebook page, and for the efforts of the many volunteers who have helped search for him this past week.
More details are coming soon. Thank you again on behalf of the family for the support of the many agencies, groups, and individuals who have helped the Dowd family during this time. They also ask to refrain from contacting them directly at this time to give them space to grieve and share the news with other family members.”

An Amtrak conductor may have spoken with Dowd early Friday near Omaha, Nebraska, one of the stops along the route, the family said.
Dowd was confused about his whereabouts and believed he was in an apartment, not on a train, and needed to find the front door, the family said.

Don't know exactly what was said and done the last time the conductor spoke with him, but, if it were me, I would feel terribly guilty for not making sure that he was watched so that he didn't go through a door, confusedly thinking it was the door to his "apartment."

Great point. If he was disoriented, I can relate as Amtrak has so many different cars and you can fall easily going from one car to another.

I would love to know what the conversation was between hi and the conductor. And, I am very surprised Amtrak evidently doesn't have security cameras.

Charles(Charlie, Dude)Dowd Dowdcharles92812_20120928
Charles Joseph
('Charlie','Dude') Dowd

Born March 11, 1944 in San Francisco, passed away tragically September 13, 2012 in Haigler, NE at the age of 68. Charlie is survived by his wife of 45 years, Patricia Dowd, children Jennifer Dowd and Kevin Dowd (Jerusha Osborne), grandchildren Anthony and Alexandra Dowd, brothers James (Fran), John (Mary), and Philip (Bonnie.) He is also survived and will be missed terribly, by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Charlie was a graduate of St. Philip's School, a student at St Joseph's Seminary as well as a graduate of St. Ignatius High School, and San Francisco State University. Charlie was a Army reservist, dedicated retired member of the San Francisco Fire Department, and successful owner of BMC Tax & Business Services in Burlingame.
Charlie will long be remembered for his dynamic personality, crazy sense of humor, goofy storytelling, love of travel and thirst for adventure. From family camping trips every summer in Lake Wildwood (Penn Valley,) to 17 different cruises with his wife, to his many, many trips to Montreal to visit his son and grandchildren, he never tired of traveling to destinations, old and new. And, he always went a different route; by plane, train, car or boat. Charlie was known for giving unique nicknames to everyone. One of the family friends who searched for him in Nebraska and Colorado, Nicole, he lovingly referred to as 'Nickel,' or more often, 'Dime.' He was a huge fan of Taco Bell and especially loved dining at the Taco Bell in Linda Mar Beach, Pacifica, California.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Charlie's life at a Mass of Christian burial Saturday, October 6, 2012, at 12pm at St Phillip's Church, 725 Diamond Street, San Francisco, with private interment to follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Peninsula Humane Society, 1450 Rollins Road; Burlingame, CA 94010.
