Skylar Neese
More than a year after she disappeared from in front of her parent's home, Skyler Neese was laid to rest at a memorial service Friday night. Friends and family of the 16 year old University High School student filled the Kingdom Evangelical Methodist Church in Westover to say goodbye.
Reverend Kevin Cain said the memorial helped bring closure, but there's still grieving to deal with. “I thought the service went as well as could be expected, and ultimately, it's just going to be one day at a time,” he said. “It's hard to go through all those months of tragedy and then just step back into life. You can't do that.”
Skyler's mother, Mary Neese, thanked everyone in attendance for their support near the end of the service, “I just want to thank each and every one of you for all the support you've given us this past year. We truly wouldn't have made it without you. And words just can't tell you guys how much we love all of you.”
Reverend Cain said he was struck by the strength of Skyler's parents throughout the ordeal. “You walk into that new normalcy, but if anyone can do it, I think Dave and Mary can.”
He adds that faith in God gives people the strength to deal with tragedy, “You know, at some point in our lives, God says, 'This is as far as I'm going to allow your pain to go.'”
Skylar Neese was reported missing in July of 2012 and her body was found in Pennsylvania in January of this year. A close friend of Neese, Rachel Shoaf, has confessed to killing the girl and is facing second degree murder charges. Officials say charges are also pending against another juvenile in the case.
Skyler's father, David Neese, brought tears to the eyes of many when he said goodbye to his daughter during the ceremony.
“No one can ever hurt you again baby, God's got you.”
