UPDATE: Carol Coronado Sentenced To Life Without Parole After Being Found Guilty Of Stabbing Her 3 Young Daughters To Death Acarol10

A southern California woman is facing murder charges sheriff officials said Friday, after authorities discovered her naked and lying in a pool of blood next to her three young daughters.

Carol Coronado, 30, was found in her bed next to the neatly lined up bodies of her three girls identified by relatives as Sophia, 2 1/2; Yazmine, 16 months; and Xenia, 2 months. When authorities found Coronado she was allegedly holding the knife that was used to kill the three children as the children were found with several stab wounds.

Coronado’s mother was the first person to see what happened, and upon the grisly discovery the mother frantically called 911 to inform authorities that her daughter had killed or had potentially killed her own children.

Police arrested Coronado on the spot upon arrival at the home, and then had her hospitalized for the self-inflicted wounds.

Coronado had reportedly tried to cut her own wrists after the brutal murders, as police removed her from her home, she was covered in blood.

As of Friday she is still hospitalized while awaiting to be transferred to the USC Medical Center’s jail ward.

Investigators are looking into Coronado’s medical and mental history in an attempt to understand what could have caused this tragedy, including the possibility that she may have suffered from postpartum depression after the birth of her youngest daughter.

A neighbor, Ashley Madrid, says that the children’s father, Rudy Coronado, was across the street working on a pickup truck when the murders took place. This neighbor also happened to see the tragic reaction by the father when authorities started bring out the children.

“I saw when they were bringing him out,” said Madrid. “He was crying. He was crying, ‘She killed my daughters!’”

One relative, John Carrion, said Coronado’s husband was “dazed and confused” about the events that took place earlier in the week.

“Right now, he’s giving her the benefit of doubt,” Carrion said. “He just said he didn’t believe he saw Carol — he saw a demon inside her. He said he doesn’t blame Carol. He blames the … demon.”

Coronado allegedly earlier in the day had told her mother that she was “going crazy.”

Those who know the family said there was no indication that anything was wrong, and Los Angeles County sheriff’s detectives are still trying to determine the woman’s motive.

Coronado has been charged with three counts of murder as well as one count of attempted murder. According to investigators the attempted murder charge is related to Coronado’s mother, but they did not elaborate further on the details.

UPDATE: Carol Coronado Sentenced To Life Without Parole After Being Found Guilty Of Stabbing Her 3 Young Daughters To Death Empty Carol Coronado Pleads Not Guilty By Reason Of Insanity For The Stabbing Deaths Of Her 3 Daughters

Post by NiteSpinR Mon Mar 23, 2015 8:50 pm

September 29, 2014

Mother indicted by a grand jury for the stabbing deaths of her three daughters pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Carol Coronado, a South Bay resident, faces three counts of capital murder in the May 20 triple killing. Relatives identified her children as 2-year-old Sophia, 1-year-old Yazmine and 2-month-old Xenia.

The children's bloodied bodies were found laid out on a bed with Coronado, barely clothed and suffering from self-inflicted wounds, next to them, according to authorities.

Coronado, 30, entered her plea after the indictment was unsealed Monday by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo. Coronado also faces an attempted murder count for allegedly trying to kill her mother, who discovered the bloody scene at the home on 223rd Street in the unincorporated West Carson area.

The indictment includes a special-circumstance allegation of multiple murders. As a result, prosecutors have the option of pursuing the death penalty.

Coronado's attorney, Stephen Allen, had hinted at an insanity defense, telling The Times that "we want to draw attention to the issue of postpartum depression and psychosis. ... More needs to be done to diagnose this disorder."

UPDATE: Carol Coronado Sentenced To Life Without Parole After Being Found Guilty Of Stabbing Her 3 Young Daughters To Death Empty Prosecutors Won’t Seek Death Penalty Against Mom Carol Coronado, Charged With Killing 3 Daughters

Post by NiteSpinR Tue Oct 06, 2015 2:38 pm

10/1/15

Prosecutors announced Friday they will not seek the death penalty against a South Bay woman charged with stabbing her three young daughters to death last year.

The decision was revealed in Compton Superior Court, where the trial for Carol Coronado was scheduled for Nov. 19. Coronado, 31, must return to court on Oct. 13, District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Sarah Ardalani said.

Coronado is charged with killing her daughters — Xenia, 3 months; Yazmine, 16 months; and Sophia, 2 — on May 20, 2014, at their home on 223rd Street near Meyler Lane in the unincorporated county area near Carson.

Their bodies were found neatly arranged from youngest to oldest on her bed, court testimony revealed.

A county grand jury of 24 people indicted Coronado a year ago on three counts of capital murder with the special circumstance allegation that she committed multiple murders. Prosecutors could have sought the death penalty, but the maximum sentence she could now receive is life in prison with no chance of release.

Coronado also is accused of attempting to kill her mother, Julie Piercey, who walked into the grisly scene and grabbed the knife away from her daughter.

The killings occurred while Coronado’s husband, Rudy, was outside working on his truck.

Defense attorneys have indicated they believe Coronado suffered from postpartum depression following Xenia’s birth. She remains in custody without bail.

The District Attorney’s Office did not provide a reason for the decision not to seek the death penalty.

UPDATE: Carol Coronado Sentenced To Life Without Parole After Being Found Guilty Of Stabbing Her 3 Young Daughters To Death Empty Defense says mother was insane, ‘begging for help,’ as Carol Coronado murder trial opens

Post by NiteSpinR Tue Nov 17, 2015 1:46 am

11/16/15

A woman charged with brutally stabbing her three young daughters to death at their home near Carson last year loved her children, but was insane and begging for someone to help her before she “did something none of us can understand,” her attorney said in court Monday.

Carol Coronado, 31, made several phone calls that day to her mother, but was failed by those around her, attorney Stephen Allen said as Coronado’s triple-murder trial opened in Compton Superior Court.

Coronado, Allen said, called her mother six or seven times, “distraught and begging for help,” Allen said. “No one was there.”

Coronado’s case opened with an empty jury box because she opted last week to let Judge Ricardo Ocampo decide her fate. If convicted, she could be sentenced to life in prison without parole or possibly to a mental institution.

Several of her family members listened as the case began, but her husband, Rudy Coronado, who has stood by her, was asked to stay outside because he is a witness in the case.

No one disputes that Coronado killed her daughters on May 20, 2014, in their tiny home on 223rd Street near Meyler Avenue, in an unincorporated area known as West Carson The defense, however, contends she is not guilty of first-degree murder, meaning she did not plan the slayings.

Once the guilt phase of the case is completed, Allen will argue during a sanity phase that Coronado suffered from postpartum depression. He also intends to show that Coronado suffered because she was molested as a child by one of her own family members.

“She was humiliated, tortured and even gang-raped,” Allen said.

Deputy District Attorney Emily Spear said the killings of 3-month-old Xenia, 16-month-old Yazmine and 2-year-old Sophia followed months of living in squalid conditions as her marriage to Rudy failed. Spear played a heated argument recorded on voice mail between Coronado and her husband, who had asked her for a divorce.

Spear said it might never be known what pushed Coronado “over the edge,” but the prosecutor displayed a photograph of a tiny bathroom smeared with feces on the bathtub, sink and child’s stool, suggesting that was the reason. The mess caused by the children resulted in systematic killings, Spear said.

Coronado slit Sophia’s and Xenia’s throats with a knife and stabbed them in the chests. Yazmine, the middle child, “bore the brunt of the defendant’s rage,” Spear said. Her throat was cut and she was beaten three times in the head with a claw hammer.

Referring to defensive wounds on Yazmine’s arms, the prosecutor said, “This 1-year-old little girl had attempted to fend off the attack from her mother.

“These murders were first-degree murders, they were premeditated,” Spear said.

Coronado, wearing a bright pink blouse and glasses, conversed with her attorney and listened to the arguments and testimony. She appeared briefly to cry.

In dramatic testimony, sheriff’s homicide Sgt. Timothy Cain, who collected evidence at the bloody scene, carefully opened boxes containing the knives, scissors and the hammer recovered from the house. Two of the large kitchen knives were stained with blood.

Coronado’s mother, Julie Piercey, discovered the children dead on the bed when she responded after work to check on her daughter. Earlier that morning, Coronado called her several times without a response. Voice mail recordings played in court revealed a crying Coronado begging her mother to call.

“Mommy, please call me. Please, please, please,” Coronado said.

Piercey testified that she did not respond because she is a school bus driver. She drove to the Coronado home after Rudy Coronado called her to come.

The couple could be heard arguing during one of the recorded calls.

Piercey said she walked into the house and found her daughter naked, as if she just came out of the bathroom. “Mom, what are you doing here?” Coronado asked her.

The girls, Piercey said, appeared to be asleep on the bed. Piercey said she suggested that would allow her daughter some rest.

“I said, ‘What kind of day did you have?’ ” Piercey recalled. “She said, ‘Mom, it was a bad day’ and she shrugged her shoulders.”

Coronado then pulled a knife. Piercey said she said, “Hell no,” grabbed her daughter’s wrist, and took the knife from her.

Prosecutors contend Coronado tried to stab her with the knife, but Piercey said that never happened. She then went outside and found Rudy Coronado, who was working on his truck while the slayings occurred, and “told him, ‘She killed the girls.’ ”

Piercey testified they went back into the house. Coronado waved her arms over the children as if protecting them, and plunged another knife into her own chest.

“She didn’t say nothing,” Piercey said. “She turned that knife on herself and put it in her body. ... I’ve never seen her act this way before.”

Piercey said that the couple had a difficult relationship. Rudy Coronado demanded she keep the house clean and wanted dinner ready when he arrived home from work. Most of the child-rearing was left to Coronado, the grandmother said.

Three Carson sheriff’s deputies who responded to 9-1-1 calls testified that they arrived to find Coronado’s mother standing calmly outside the house. She told them her daughter had just killed her grandchildren. Inside the house, Rudy Coronado was hysterical, crying and cussing. Once they entered, they found the children on their parents’ bed.

“It appeared they were dead already,” Deputy Enrique Gin said, his voice quieting as he looked at a crime-scene photo. “They had no signs of life.”

The deputies said Coronado was naked, covered with blood and lying perpendicular to their bodies close to their heads.

“She just had a blank stare on her face,” Deputy Johnnie Owens said. “Her eyes were wide open and she just stared straight ahead.”

A grand jury indicted Coronado on three counts of capital murder with the special circumstance allegation she committed multiple murders. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty.

UPDATE: Carol Coronado Sentenced To Life Without Parole After Being Found Guilty Of Stabbing Her 3 Young Daughters To Death Empty Carol Coronado Murder Case Suspended As She Screams For Her Husband, Mother, Dead Children

Post by NiteSpinR Sat Nov 21, 2015 12:05 pm

11/20/15

A woman charged with stabbing her three children to death at their home near Carson was dragged kicking and screaming from a Compton courtroom Friday, raising questions about her mental state or whether she was faking psychotic behavior as her murder trial neared an end.

Carol Coronado, 31, whose case hinges on whether she was sane at the time she killed her daughters on May 20, 2014, shouted to family members in the courtroom and eerily called out for her children as deputies worked to restrain her.

“I need my mother! I need my husband! I need my children! Right now!” Coronado yelled, sitting next to her attorney, Stephen Allen. “You are trying to confuse me!”

Coronado’s behavior prompted Judge Ricardo Ocampo to suspend the proceedings until Nov. 30, so the court can appoint a doctor to evaluate her to determine whether the case can continue.

Allen told Ocampo he noticed Coronado was behaving oddly Thursday morning before her husband, Rudy Coronado, took the witness stand as her defense case began.

Coronado appeared to cry at times as her husband described her “weird” behavior in the days that led to the horrific killings. Rudy Coronado, who said his wife was tasked with caring for the three girls — 3-month-old Xenia, 16-month-old Yazmine and 2-year-old Sophia — while he worked, was outside their home on 223rd Street near Meyler Avenue when his wife slit their daughters’ throats and beat one with a hammer.

After her mother, Julie Piercey, discovered the bloody scene, Rudy Coronado said he ran inside and watched his wife plunge the knife into her own chest in a suicide attempt.

Carol Coronado is charged with three counts of first-degree murder with the special circumstances allegation that she committed multiple murders. Prosecutors contend she planned the slayings as her husband intended to divorce her, lining up knives beforehand and then arranging the dead children in order of age on her bed.

Should the case continue, the defense plans to argue she is guilty of second-degree murder and will try to convince Ocampo during the case’s sanity phase that she should be found not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to a mental hospital instead of prison.

Coronado opted against having a jury decide her fate. Ocampo is hearing the evidence.

The trial moved quickly this week without any problems. Coronado did not appear to be handcuffed at any point and walked freely with detectives to and from the court lockup.

After her husband testified, Coronado told the judge before the lunch break that she did not wish to testify in her own defense and understood questions he posed to her about her rights. The case did not resume, however, after lunch amid talk that Coronado was having a mental breakdown.

Friday morning, Coronado began screaming at the deputies guarding her when Ocampo took the bench. This time, they handcuffed her at the defense table, unlike at any other point in trial.

“Do not put your hands on me!” she shouted. “Mom, I need you. Stop fixing my clothing! C’mon. This is childish. Get your hands off me. No, no, no!”

As she continued to yell, she announced, “My name is Carol Coronado,” and said her birthdate and that she was in the service.

“Your name is Judge Ocampo,” she said. “You have seen my husband in this courtroom before.”

She continued to struggle as her attorney described her declining mental condition and said he could no longer communicate with her. He suggested she no longer understood what was happening in court.

“This is not true! This is not true!” she screamed before the judge ordered her taken from the courtroom.

Allen said Coronado had become increasingly paranoid Thursday and suspicious of him. He said she did not know why she was in a courtroom.

“I truly believe she is not competent,” Allen said.

Deputy District Attorney Emily Spear cast doubt on Coronado’s behavior, saying she suspected Coronado was fabricating her condition. In the 18 months since the slayings, Coronado displayed no problems, including during court this week, Spear said.

In interactions they had, Spear said Coronado understood her defense case, and was positive and upbeat about seeing her family and husband in court, anticipating his testimony would help her.

“Perhaps she did not think it went well,” Spear said.

Spear suggested Coronado might be acting. She noted that Coronado appeared to cry while the Daily Breeze had a photographer in the courtroom on Monday and Thursday, but showed no emotion when grisly photographs of her daughters were displayed in court on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“I believe a lot of this is for the benefit of the audience,” Spear said.

Ocampo said he would make no decisions on her competence until a doctor evaluates her.

A Torrance mother was convicted on three counts of first-degree murder charges Monday for stabbing her three young daughters to death last year.

If she is found to be sane, 32-year-old Carol Ann Coronado faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

On May 20, 2014, Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies responded to a rescue call in the 1000 block of W. 223rd Street. They were met by family members who told them that Coronado had killed her three daughters, 2-year-old Sophia, 16-month-old Yazmine and 2-month-old Xenia.

Neighbors said the children's grandmother made the horrifying discovery after her daughter had called her and said she was going crazy.

Prosecutors were not seeking the death penalty, according to the L.A. County District Attorney's Office.

UPDATE: Carol Coronado Sentenced To Life Without Parole After Being Found Guilty Of Stabbing Her 3 Young Daughters To Death Empty Carol Ann Coronado Sentenced To Life In Prison With No Possibility Of Parole.

Post by NiteSpinR Thu Feb 11, 2016 9:47 pm

February 2, 2016

A California mother who stabbed her three young daughters to death has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Carol Ann Coronado, 32, was convicted in November 2015 of three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her three daughters. The girls ranged in age from 2 months old to 2 years old.

Coronado stabbed the girls to death in May 2014 before trying to harm herself, police said. The girls were found lying in a pool of blood and Coronado was found naked nearby with a knife.

Coronado’s mother made the gruesome discovery when she stopped by to visit her granddaughters.

Ashley Madrid, Coronado’s next door neighbor, told Nancy Grace she saw the grandmother run out of the house and frantically call 911.

The neighbor watched as police led Coronado out of the house. "She had no clothes on, they put her in a blanket. I could see the blood smears on her face, legs, and arms," Madrid said. "She had no expression on her face, she was just looking at the ground."

The girls’ father had been working on a car across the street when the incident occurred.

Madrid said she never suspected Coronado would harm anyone. "I've never seen her act crazy. She looked to me like a good mother, hugging and playing with her kids. They always looked clean and well taken care of. The kids were always laughing and she'd laugh with them and hug and kiss them. From what I've seen, she loved them very much," Madrid said. "This came completely out of the blue."
