While stating the above and the numbers seem high I would also like to post the following:
36,000 -- On average, Americans of all ages who die of flu complications each year
200,000 -- On average, Americans hospitalized with flu complications each year (this would be average approx 547 infections a day)

Wow I totally forgot about this thread. Juanita for your detailed reply.
I so hope you are right, and they have learned from 76 and from 1918, but there is only one way to find out and thats to wait and see.
I am still not convinced that this was not created. I understand that flu mutates and changes, if I remember correctly it actually changes every 8 hours, that the flu you have this morning is not the same flu you had when you go to bed, and I also understand that pigs are the best pot to mix diffrent virus, however just the way all this happened is questionable.

butterfly, it happened exactly the way you said you understood it to happen. just believe what you understand. humans just arent immune to pandemics and possible extinction. its scary, but not impossible. it doesnt have to take anything artificial to happen.

ATLANTA – Health officials estimate that as many as 1 million Americans now have the new swine flu. Lyn Finelli, a flu surveillance official with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, voiced the estimate at a vaccine advisory meeting Thursday in Atlanta.

email this AM from the White House:
As the President's advisor on Homeland Security, I am passing along the following message from Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services, Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security, and Arne Duncan, Secretary of Education, who are leading the efforts to prepare our Nation for the coming flu season.
Fellow Americans,
This spring we were confronted with an outbreak of a troubling flu virus called 2009-H1N1. As the fall flu season approaches, it is critical that we reinvigorate our preparedness efforts across the country in order to mitigate the effects of this virus on our communities.
Today, we are holding an H1N1 Influenza Preparedness Summit in conjunction with the White House to discuss our Nation's preparedness. We are working together to monitor the spread of 2009-H1N1 and to prepare to initiate a voluntary fall vaccination program against the 2009-H1N1 flu virus, assuming we have a safe vaccine and do not see changes in the virus that would render the vaccine ineffective.
But the most critical steps to mitigating the effects of 2009-H1N1 won't take place in Washington — they will take place in your homes, schools and community businesses.
Taking precautions for this fall's flu season is a responsibility we all share. Visit Flu.gov to make sure you are ready and learn how you can help promote public awareness.
We are making every effort to have a safe and effective vaccine available for distribution as soon as possible, but our current estimate is that it won't be ready before mid-October. This makes individual prevention even more critical. Wash your hands regularly. Take the necessary precautions to stay healthy and if you do get sick, stay home from work or school.
We are doing everything possible to prepare for the fall flu season and encourage all Americans to do the same — this is a shared responsibility and now is the time to prepare. Please visit Flu.gov to learn what steps you can take to prepare and do your part to mitigate the effects of H1N1.
Take Care,
Kathleen, Janet and Arne

Re: Swine Flu and H1N1 Vaccinations
CNN, is covering the swine flu.
They brought up something I had said earlier, I am hoping that Juanita can clear it up for me.
The flu mutates rapidly, just as it did in 1918, the H1N1 that we have now and this past spring, could very easily mutate and may not be what we see in the fall. It could come back furious and more deadly in the fall, a vaccine may be available by October. First question if the fall strand may not be the same strand as is now than what good would a vaccine due, and secondly is a vaccine available in October going to be safe, what do we know as far as testing this vaccine goes on humans? It usually takes years to come up with a vaccine october is only a few months, how can we know its safe?

I found this on my local news..
the public health officer says, "It's going to be very interesting. We'll have to watch the southern hemisphere as they're in their flu season now."
Does anyone have any knowledge about this?

Re: Swine Flu and H1N1 Vaccinations
Hi Butterfly.
If this virus mutates it will become more virulent and diff. than what it is today. If they make a vaccine for the virus we know today, it would not be the same as if it does mutate, however, it would still share some of the same properties as the older version did. Therefore, it may not be 100% protective, but it would still help to protect.
The vaccines are either live or dead viruses, that the body reacts to by making antibodies to it. No vaccine is 100% safe, all have their risk of side effects. This one should not be any different than others. Hope this makes sense.

Re: Swine Flu and H1N1 Vaccinations
sorry i just saw butterfly's post. the vaccine has to be tested in animals first, preferably a mammal before it can be given or tested in humans. i agree, there isnt much time.
if the vaccine is made from dead virus, the risk is much much lower and so that is the first choice. a live virus vaccine will be made from an attenuated virus, which would be a modified virus that isnt as risky as the real thing.
we will never know how safe or effective it is in such a short time period.

Swine flu could hit up to 40 percent in US
ATLANTA – In a disturbing new projection, health officials say up to 40 percent of Americans could get swine flu this year and next and several hundred thousand could die without a successful vaccine campaign and other measures.
The estimates by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are roughly twice the number of those who catch flu in a normal season and add greater weight to hurried efforts to get a new vaccine ready for the fall flu season.

I have an auto-immune disorder so I have to be really careful. I try to eat right and stay un-stressed (usually) - I get a flu shot every year and have special labs drawn every four months. I take boat loads of vitamins and try to get enough rest, as I fatigue easily. That is about all we can do; take care of ourselves and wash our hands a lot.CritterFan1 wrote:I really am afraid that this fall it is really going to get out of hand. My neighbor told me that she bought one of those machines that can receive emails or faxes (not sure ) because she couldn't go to the library anymore to check her email account. I asked her why and she said, "because of the Swine Flu'. That seems like overkill to me, at this point.

overkill. she cant shutter herself in her home, she has to learn to keep good sanitary practices and still live her life. it doesnt matter where you are, if one person has recently sneezed or touched something and it makes it to your mucus membranes, you can get infected. crowded places and not washing your hands just boosts your chances.
