Synopsis: This investigation identified a large-scale drug and money laundering operation that was involved with smuggling bulk quantities of cocaine (approximately 500 kilograms per importation), totaling over 5,000 kilograms, from Brazil into the United States. This was during the period from approximately 1996 to 1998. In May of 1998, the U.S. Customs Service seized over 500 kilograms of cocaine leading to the arrest and conviction of four individuals. Through additional investigation, a larger operation was identified that smuggled cocaine within paper products and into the Port of Newark/Elizabeth, NJ area.
