Steven Koecher missing in Utah since December 2009/ Susan Powell's family reacts to what they call new lies/Media attention opens old wounds, new hopes by Rolf D Koecher/ Josh Powell: 'I'm Not Angry' at Missing Wife Susan
Exclusive: ABC 4 talks to parents of missing Utah man
Reported by: Christiana Brady

HENDERSON, Nevada (ABC 4 News) - Susan Powell is not the only missing Utahn. 30-year-old Steven Koecher has been missing about as long as Susan under circumstances that detectives are saying "just don't line up." ABC 4 spoke exclusively with Koecher's parents at their home in Bountiful.
Steven was last seen in the town of Henderson, just outside Las Vegas. What's troubling, his parents say, is there are no indicators that say he would've just abandoned those close to him. After almost a month of tracing dead-ends, his parents are beginning to fear he might have disappeared without a trace.
Koecher’s mom, DeAnne, says, “When we have something that we're working toward we have a little bit of hope, but the nights are very, very long.” His Dad, Rolf, adds, “When they're no longer kids, you don't worry so much, when they grow up, you know...I guess you always have to worry.” In fact, worry is all they've done since Steven, a St. George resident, first disappeared on December 13th.
His white 2003 Chevy Cavalier had been sitting in the cul de sac of a upscale Hendersen, Nevada retirement community for four days. A nearby resident who is a retired US Marshal, has a video surveillance system he keeps running at his home. The video shows Steven walking away from his car the morning he disappeared. His mom says, “He looks very purposeful, doesn't look disoriented, looks like he has a reason to be there.”
As for any other signs showing Steven might have felt troubled, his mom says they had spoken to him recently and they had a typical conversation. She says, “Nothing in my heart says he would stay away from us on purpose….Thirty years old, and probably wasn't exactly where he wanted to be in life, but handling it.”
The Las Vegas, Henderson and Saint George police agencies are all working the case. Just last week, police searched with helicopter, ATVs, even door to door canvassing. Much like Susan Powell, the search for Steven Koecher has also gone viral. His family has started the “Help find Steven Koecher” facebook page.
Steven is described at 5'10, 180 pounds, blonde hair, blue eyes and fair skin. He was last seen wearing white tennis shoes and a dress shirt.
If you have any information, the Koechers are asking you to please call the Henderson Police Department at 702-267-5000.

This young man went missing about the same time as Susan Powell. He has not gotten the media attention that Susan has gotten, it seems like he has just walked away from life. Hope he is ok.

Police, dairy join forces to find missing person
Milk cartons across southern Nevada and Utah have begun displaying the face of Steven T. Koecher, 30, as part of a cooperative effort by the Henderson Police, Las Vegas Metro Police and Anderson Dairy.
Koecher, a St. George man and former Bountiful resident, has been missing in the Las Vegas area since Dec. 13. He will be featured on the dairy’s half-gallon cartons for the next several weeks.
“We are hopeful that residents of the Las Vegas area will take notice of the milk cartons and call the police if they spot someone matching Steven’s description, said Deanne Koecher, Steven’s mother. “We are even alerting news media in Utah because he used to live and work here.”
Already, tips have been called in following recent stories in the Las Vegas and Salt Lake City media. Employees at a restaurant near Flamingo and the Boulder Highway have reported seeing a person matching his description at least three weeks in a row, prompting this parents and extended family members recently to post a vigil at the restaurant for several nights, but the person did not show up.
“We were just grateful that someone took the time to watch for Steven,” said Deanne Koecher. “Several employees told us they’d seen this individual who looked much like Steven, but key descriptions did not match, and one of them even said she felt the mysterious customer was definitely not Steven. It is our opinion that this person looked much like Steven but that it was not him; however, we greatly appreciate the alertness of all the restaurant employees.”
Steven’s parents and extended family members also combed nearby restaurants, stores and casinos while they were in Las Vegas recently, but did not find Steven. They even talked with homeless people at Las Vegas area shelters and at informal homeless camps.
The effort was touched off after Koecher’s car had been found abandoned for four days in the Sun City Anthem area of Henderson in December. Koecher’s parents immediately reported him missing and launched a private search of the neighborhoods near the abandoned vehicle. In late December, a wide air and ground search was launched by Henderson Police in tandem with Las Vegas Metro Police.
Henderson police searched in a wide radius around Sun City Anthem for two days, using police dogs and searchers on all-terrain vehicles to examine culverts, drainage basins, ditches, gullies and other rough terrain. Meanwhile, police and volunteer searchers from the Nevada Center for Missing Loved Ones, combed homes and neighborhoods, and a Las Vegas Metro helicopter searched from the air.
“They conducted an all-out effort to find Steven, but so far there hasn’t been a trace of him,” said Clipper Editor Rolf Koecher, Steven’s father. “Surveillance cameras caught Koecher leaving his car right at noon on Sunday, Dec. 13, as if heading to an appointment, but he apparently never returned to his car.”
A deepening mystery
Those closest to Steven know of no alcohol, drug or similar issues, yet he vanished on a bright Sunday morning in an upscale neighborhood. He is well-liked by his many friends and associates, according to leaders of his LDS church congregation in St. George, who describe him as cheerful, the first to volunteer for service projects and always dependable. In addition, his car contained Christmas gifts for his older brother’s family, which he purchased just the evening before he disappeared.
“All this just deepens the mystery,” said Rolf Koecher. “This is a particularly difficult and confusing situation because many clues indicate he was planning to return to St. George on the day he disappeared, and none of the clues point to any particular motive or conclusion. St. George police even reported that their investigation into Steven revealed he had apparently been acting as a Good Samaritan on the Friday before he disappeared, trying to help locate the parents of two young girls accidentally locked out of their home on a cold afternoon.”
Steven’s mother, meanwhile, has expressed the family’s gratitude for the efforts that have been made to find their missing son.
“We are impressed with the intense effort expended by the Henderson and Las Vegas Metro police in finding our son, especially for the tireless work of Det. Robert McKay and his associates. We are even aware that detectives have done additional searches on their own and that a number of Las Vegas area residents whom we don’t even know have organized spontaneous searches on their own volition, as well,” said Deanne Koecher. “We are grateful that Anderson Dairy has now joined in the effort to help solve this mystery, which is very troubling and painful for us, his siblings and extended family members. We welcome any tips or clues the public may provide.”

Steven Koecher, 30, missing; is there a link to Susan Powell?/ Police consider Josh Powell's use of rental car possible link
March 1, 2010 - Steven Koecher, an upstanding citizen who served others, who had no criminal or drug-related history, and who seemed happy with his life in St. George, suddenly vanished Dec. 13, 2009 - just six days after Susan Powell disappeared.
Is there a connection between the two cases? It's far-fetched, Steven's family says, but it's worth investigating.
Steven's mother, Deanne Koecher, said the reason they were interested is Susan Powell's case and investigating the possibility the two cases were connected was because of a road trip through Tawilla that Josh Powell, Susan's husband, took at around the time Steven disappeared.
Police in Henderson and St. George are not ruling anything out and consider a possible link between the two cases. They are, in particular, interested in the trip Josh Powell took in a rental car.
She said, "It seems far but we welcome any information sharing."
According to police, Steven was last seen at an upscale retirement community in Las Vegas December 13.
Rolf Koecher, Steven's father, said St. George police detectives indicated to him that Susan's family had asked the department to look for any link between the two cases. He told the Deseret News that while he has personally dismissed the notion his family is open to any investigation.
Shelby Gifford, spokeswoman for Susan Powell's family, told The Deseret News Friday she doesn't know whether the family had made such a request but said it was "possible" as Susan's family has asked West Valley to investigate any cases that may reasonably be related.
Susan Powell, 28, disappeared from her West Valley City home Dec. 6. Her husband was the last person to see her. His story that he took his two young sons on an impromptu camping trip in the middle of the night during sub-freezing temperatures the night his wife disappeared has been largely criticized and disbelieved.
Less than a month after she vanished, Josh packed up their family belongings and moved their two young children, then ages 2 and 4, to his father's home in Puyallup, Wash. Nearly three months after her disappearance Josh remains the only person of interest police call a "missing person's case with suspicious criminal overtones."
Rolf Koecher said, "I personally don't think there's a connection, but Dec. 7 she disappeared and he traveled through that area around that date. There's some speculation that he and Susan Powell took off together."
He elaborated in a written statement to Utah television station KCSG:
"While it appears that Steven is close in age to Susan Powell and was driving through the Salt Lake City area within a day or two of her disappearance, any connection between the two seems entirely coincidental to us. Because we want to remain open to all possibilities, no matter how improbable, we have no issue with an exchange of information between the St. George and West Valley City police departments."
"We would be surprised to think there could be a connection," said Deanne. "We just do not want to rule out anything of interest."
Deanne said that before his disappearance, her son had been in Ruby, Nev., and was in northern Utah Dec. 9 -11 before returning to St. George.
During a news conference Friday in Henderson, Nev., officials announced they have found no evidence the 30-year-old traveled out of the area by bus or plane.
About 40 members of Koecher's family attended the news conference in Henderson City Hall.
Koecher's car was found parked in a Sun City Anthem cul-de-sac, an upscale residential community in Henderson, around noon on Dec. 13, the day he disappeared.
A short time later surveillance video of the area from a nearby home's security camera shows a man believed to be Koecher walking away from the car.
Christmas gifts were found in the vehicle and there was no sign of foul play.
No one has come forward saying they have heard from him since that day.
The day Steven went missing is also the last day he used his cell phone, email, and a debit card. It is not believed he left the country because his passport was found during a search of his St. George home.
"It's been two months," said Koecher's father during a Friday news conference in front of Henderson City Hall.
"There's no smoking gun, and we've got hundreds of clues that tell us what it isn't, but not one that tells us what it is," Rolf Koecher told the Review-Journal.
Rolf and Deanne Koecher, Steven's mother, said that so far, all leads have turned up dry.
FOX 13 News interviewed Deanne and said that Steven was happy in his new life in St. George. He moved there from Bountiful a year ago in hopes of landing a new job.
Steven was a recent University of Utah graduate. Before he disappeared he was working for a window washing company in St. George and seemed happy with his job. He faithfully served his church and mentored kids with the Big Brother Program.
Steven's parents Friday offered a $10,000 reward to anyone who can provide information leading to Steven's whereabouts, or the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his abduction or death.
"We can't believe we can't find him, can't hold him, that we can't tell him how much we love him," Deanna said.
Anyone with information about the disappearance of Susan Powell should contact the West Valley City Police at 801-840-4000.
Anyone with information about the disappearance of Steven Koecher should contact Henderson, NV Police at 702-267-5000 or St George, UT Police at 435-627-4300.

I am trying to read between the lines here and don't really understand...does Susan's family think she and this guy Steven ran away or do they suspect Josh is involved in Steven's disappearance? Does Steven's mother believe Josh may be responsible? Color me confused.

I thought you would come here and explain it to me. :lol!: I think this is pretty far fetched. I don't see her leaving her children, but stranger things have happened.Rolf Koecher said, "I personally don't think there's a connection, but Dec. 7 she disappeared and he traveled through that area around that date. Maybe this missing person was a witness to what Josh might have done to Susan and he got rid of him, too. Okay, I know this is a stretch............

well, he sure would not want any witnesses that is for sure. Steven could have had the misfortune to have seen josh unloading susan's body, or steven may have seen Josh somewhere totally different from the camping site that Josh proclaimed to be sleeping there with the boys.BJ in OR wrote:Maybe this missing person was a witness to what Josh might have done to Susan and he got rid of him, too. IMHO I cannot imagine this beautiful, loving mother leaving her children for a MAN. Does not seem feasible to me.....she loved her children with her entire being from what LE and her family has said. kind of like Stacey Peterson.

Women have done this who were in abusive relationships and scared of their spouse. It would not surprise me at all. However my take on this is maybe Susan had some kind of relationship with Steven and Josh got rid of them both.

The car is found the same day Steven went missing. A man is seen walking away from the car, whom they THINK is Steven. Josh took a road trip in this area, in a rental car. If Josh was as controlling as he has been made out to be, and I have no doubt, then I do doubt Susan and Steven were in some sort of relationship. However, the two belonging to the same church, makes me wonder if Steven, through social connection with the church, may have offered to assist her in escaping her husband, and Josh somehow connected the two. Say by a phone number on a cellular phone, drew his own conclusions and killed them both, but at different time. LE needs to look hard at the phone records and especially at text messages from and to Susan's phone.

Search for missing Utah man aims at Las Vegas buses, homeless shelters
It has been seven months since Steven Koecher parked his car in Henderson, Nev., and seemingly walked off the edge of the Earth.
Now, his family plans to board public transit buses in the Henderson-Las Vegas area today in a desperate bid to latch onto a new, slim thread of hope.
Since the 30-year-old disappeared on Dec. 13, his Bountiful family has maintained an effort to find him: posters have been printed and distributed; interviews by the dozens done with newspaper and broadcast reporters; a “Help Us Find Steven Koecher” Facebook page that had more than 17,500 users as of Thursday. A small army of volunteers even scoured the southeastern Nevada desert in late December.
“What else could we do?” Rolf Koecher, Steven’s father, said Thursday. “We got to thinking that [over the past months] we’ve gotten a lot of reports of sightings of Steven in various parts of [Henderson and neighboring Las Vegas]. But they were vague and never confirmed.”

I don't know about this story of searching homeless areas for him. Why would anyone chose to do that?

Awhile back it was thought that because Susan Powell and Steven disappeared from the same area about the same time that there might have been a connection. Maybe that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and "saw something".

Although it most likely can't be used in court, so much of the evidence against these characters is in their mannerisms and lack of emotion!

Josh Powell says missing wife mentally ill, left family
Susan Powell case: Josh Powell says missing wife mentally ill, left family
Josh Powell, the husband of missing mother Susan Powell and the only person of interest in the case, broke his silence this week saying his wife is mentally ill and left the family of her own accord.
It’s been almost a year since Susan was reported missing from her Utah home on December 7, 2009. Josh told authorities he had taken his two young sons on a camping trip in sub-zero temperatures at around midnight the night before. He claimed they slept in the family van and when they returned home the next day, Susan, 28, was nowhere to be found.
About a month after his wife vanished, Josh packed up his children and took them to Washington to live.
In an interview with The Salt Lake Tribune, Josh said he wanted to speak out because he believes Susan is “extremely unstable,” and that mental illness drove her to leave her family.
“She knows she will be chewed up like hamburger when she comes back,” he said during the interview referring to the scrutiny he believes she will face from her family and the public if and when she reappears.
“She can’t come back with them treating her this way… They want her to be perfect, a saint with no fallibility,” Josh said.
The Tribune notes that Susan’s family has openly criticized Josh and his lack of cooperation with investigators. They have also said he was abusive and controlling with Susan.
Josh addressed those criticisms, saying Susan’s family must stop lying about him and accept Susan’s flaws.
“She doesn’t have as much strength as they like to think she has,” he said.
Nonetheless, he tearfully said at one point that his wife is “a good person and a good wife and a good mother.”
Josh’s father, Steve Powell believes Susan left to be with another man.
“Susan’s very sexually motivated, and she’s very financially motivated,” said Steve.
According to the report, Josh said he will not meet with West Valley City police again regarding his wife’s disappearance.
Anyone with information regarding Susan Powell's whereabouts or her disappearance is urged to call the West Valley City Police Dept. at 801-840-4000.

Josh is an evil, evil man and so is his father...To speak so disrespectfully of this well-loved woman:
He makes me sick! I just feel so sorry for those two precious boys. Susan loved them so much, but they are going to be raised thinking that she deserted them, which she would never do! (As stated by those that knew her well.)
I just pray that the truth will come out and that Josh will pay...But what will happen to the boys? Left in the care of Steve, who Susan did not trust and did not want them to be around?

John, and trust me I spit on th3e ground when I speak YOUR vapid name, YOU will be ground up like hamburger where you will find yourself going, "little man". Don't you worry. You are the sorriest, sickest excuse of a person God ever breathed breath into, to deprive those two boys of their loving mommy so they can be raised by the likes of you and your equally as sick family makes me seriously want to hurl. You will go to hell and rot there for all eternity for what you have done, and nobody believes your little fairy tale mental disorder stories so why don't you just SAVE IT.

Yeah I was so ticked off I meant Josh. What a waste of space that man is.
Susan Powell's family reacts to what they call new lies
It has been nearly a year since Susan Cox Powell disappeared from her Utah home. Over the weekend her husband, Josh Powell, broke his silence in an interview with The Salt Lake Tribune. What he had to say is not sitting well with Susan’s parents or Josh Powell’s sister.
Josh Powell’s comments in the Salt Lake Tribune painted Susan as a woman who battled mental illness. Her father, Charles Cox told Good Morning America, the accusations were “blatantly false”. Cox said “It’s obviously a self serving statement. It’s untrue, it’s all untrue.”
In the Salt Lake Tribune interview, Josh also accused Susan’s parents of putting too much pressure on her to be perfect. Her mother, Judy Cox says “We don’t expect any of our children to be perfect, no one would expect that. They would want their children to be happy.”
Josh’s estranged sister, Jennifer Graves, said the fact Josh implied that Susan had inherited the mental illness from her family is ironic since it’s the Powell family that has a history of mental illness. “Josh’s brother has bi-polar schizophrenia, so it’s documented in the Powell family. It’s not documented, as far as I know, in the Cox family.”
Josh also told the Salt Lake Tribune he believes his wife ran off with another man. Her family says that’s not possible. Her father says “They had ups and downs, and we thought they were eventually going to work it out because Susan was so committed to making it work. He says Susan had a goal. “We felt that with persistence she would eventually get what she wanted, which was a happy family.”
They say that hope went unrealized when she disappeared, and now they cling to the slim hope she is still alive. Charles Cox says “We have the hope she is still alive. We realize after this time that we may find her body somewhere, but we still have hope that she’s alive, and we hang on to that.”
Josh Powell maintains he was camping with his two young sons, in a snowstorm, the night Susan disappeared. He remains the only person of interest in the case. Susan’s parents say they are in contact with detectives on a weekly basis are assured there is progress being made.

After seeing that video, I can definitely agree with what Hippie Chick wrote. Josh Powell has confirmed what we all knew: He is an IDIOT!! He has most likely murdered his wife, constructed a ridiculous "plot" with his innocent sons, alienated his sons from their maternal grandparents & most of his family members, and now tried to attack his dead wife's character. His self-centeredness & arrogance completely astounds me!!

I too agree with Hippie Chick, he's a piece of garbage who murdered his children's Mother and has no regard for his children. I think his Dad is as sick as he is and I so wish I lived in the same town as they did because I'd love to slap that man silly. He has no consideration at all for Susan's parents, I wish they would take that man to court to get at least visitation with the kids if not legal/physical custody. They seem like nice people, perhaps too nice and Josh probably banked on this. I've always respected Josh's sister for the way she stands up for Susan and against Josh - good for her!
I feel so damn bad for these children being raised by sicko Josh and sicko Grandpa.
Oh if it were me, I'd put a boot right up his ***...... I just get so angry at that guy.

What in the world would cause someone to make up such an outlandish story and expect the general public to believe it? Is he crazy? Does his story starting with the making of s'mores in frigid temperatures right on upo to "my wife is a lunatic" make sense to HIM? I think this man needs a check-up from the neck-up. He's gone off the deep end and his whole family is supporting his wild tales! Given his mental state, WHY can't CPS remove those children from the care of this whacky family and out them with Susans loving family? Its insane! As insane as leaving Drew Peterson's kids with him for so long. Has this world gone nuts? Doesn't anybody care about the kids anymore? I want to scream!!! Those poor kids who are undoubtably being brainwashed against their mother bu Josh's crazy family!!!

Josh Powell’s father says Susan ran away with missing Utah man, Steven Koecher
A year after his wife’s disappearance, Josh Powell and his family are advancing a theory about what happened to Susan Cox Powell.
For a year, the families of Susan Powell and Steven Koecher have searched and grieved.
Now Josh Powell and his father say two of the state’s most notable missing person cases from last year are more than just parallel, they’re intertwined.
It’s the most specific Josh Powell and his father, Steve Powell, have been in theorizing what might have happened to Susan.
On the website run by the Powells, Josh and Steve make their case: Susan Powell and Koecher are about the same age, members of the LDS Church and both were in West Valley City during the week of their disappearances in December 2009. The website alleges that Susan Powell and Koecher absconded to Brazil, where they potentially married and started a new life.
Family members of both Susan Powell and Koecher say there is no truth to the story.
The website claims Susan Powell was leading a "secret double life" and that her family had been "attempting to destroy" her marriage.
The website also says Susan was emotionally abused by her family and that her mother suffered from mental illness, which came on later in life.

Josh Powell, husband of missing woman shares new theory of her whereabouts
On the one-year anniversary of missing West Valley City woman, Susan Cox Powell, her husband, Josh Powell shares his own theory about her disappearance.
Josh Powell is the only person of interest in the case and later moved to Washington with their children months after Susan went missing.
Powell's theory is not flattering about his wife and his sister and Susan's friends in Utah say his theory is light on reality and heavy on desperation.
"When I read the pages yesterday, I laughed because it was so ridiculous," said Kiirsi Hellewell. "I think it shows more than ever that they're trying everything they can try to deflect attention away from Josh and suspicions away from Josh."
Josh Powell's website dedicated to finding his missing wife is saying she ran away with another man, Steven Koecher who also disappeared in December 2009. The website uses general attributes of Susan and Koercher, describing both are LDS, similar ages and similar dates of disappearance.
"There's a lot of LDS people in Utah that are in their 20's and just because these two happened to tragically disappear in the month of December, that's all there is to it. They've never met. They have no connection whatsoever," Hellewell said.
Josh Powell's sister, Jennifer Graves said her brother lacks credibility passing on a theory without talking to detectives.
"They act like they're so interested in finding Susan and let's help investigators but I still want to know why Josh isn't willing to come and talk to the West Valley Police," Graves said.
Josh Powell's father who supports his son's theory, responded to some e-mailed question from FOX 13 saying, "We hope what we have presented is helpful in their search. None of us, including the police agencies and federal agents, can know for certain whether or not they are together. This is a possibility that must be taken seriously," said Steve Powell.

Josh Powell claims wife ran off with missing Utah man, Steve
Just in time for the one-year anniversary of the disappearance of Susan Cox Powell, her husband is apparently floating a theory that she ran off with a St. George man who went missing around the same time.
A website maintained by Josh Powell was updated Saturday with several supposed "parallels" between his wife and Steven Koecher, who was last seen Dec. 13, 2009, in Henderson, Nev. The posts strongly imply that Josh Powell and his father believe they went to Brazil, where Koecher served an LDS mission.
Koecher's father and a spokeswoman for Susan Cox Powell's family said they place no stock in the idea. She disappeared Dec. 7, 2009, the same night that Josh Powell claims he took their two young sons camping in the bitter cold in the Simpson Springs area of Tooele County. He is the only person of interest police have named in her disappearance.
Steven Koecher was last seen Dec. 13, 2009
Included in the material posted on Josh Powell's website is a rambling, nine-page report written by his father, Steven Powell, outlining why Susan Cox Powell may have left and by what means she and Koecher could have traveled to Brazil. The report states he started researching the Koecher case in February.
"The more I read about him, the more I learned about him, and the more I looked at the timeline for him during the week of Susan's disappearance, the more convinced I became that the Koecher and Powell disappearances were related," Steven Powell wrote.
He said he shared his speculations with the FBI and police in West Valley City, St. George and Henderson.
"That theory is preposterous," said Cox family spokeswoman Shelby Gifford. "Susan may have been willing to walk away from her marriage, but she never would have walked away from her boys."
"That theory is preposterous. Susan may have been willing to walk away from her marriage, but she never would have walked away from her boys." -Cox family spokeswoman Shelby Gifford
Rolf Koecher, Steven's father, said West Valley and St. George police met to see if they could find any connection between the two cases, but found none.
"We don't think there's a link," he said. "We're not mad at (the Powells), but we don't agree with what they're saying."
Rolf Koecher noted that investigators checked airline records because his son had recently obtained a passport, but they uncovered no evidence that he had left the country, and the passport was later found buried in a clothes drawer.
He said his own theory is that his son was lured by something, perhaps a job opportunity, into the Henderson neighborhood where a security camera caught him walking the day he disappeared -- and that something then went terribly wrong.
Susan Powell disappeared Dec. 7, 2009
The family does not have anything planned for the anniversary of Koecher's disappearance but still hopes someone will come forward with helpful information, he said.
Susan Cox Powell's family and friends are focusing on service projects instead of vigils as they mark one year since she went missing. The public is invited to share story-time -- a favorite activity of Susan and her sons -- Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Whittier Elementary, 3585 S. 6000 West. Volunteers can pick up missing-person fliers to distribute Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hunter Library, 4740 W. 4100 South.
Her parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, appeared Saturday on NBC's Today Show and responded to recent statements by Josh Powell that they had emotionally abused their daughter.
"Anyone can see that's a self-serving statement, and it's made without any evidence whatsoever because there is no evidence. There's been no abuse," Chuck Cox said. "Our daughter was taken against her will and is not in control of her situation."
Judy Cox added, "I have great courage that she'll be found … sometime in the future. We're hoping sooner than later."
An interview with the Koecher family will be broadcast Monday on the Today Show.

Josh Powell speaks: My wife, Susan, left us behind
Despite pressure from police and the public, Josh Powell has remained tight-lipped about why he thinks his wife disappeared or how she might be found.
But this week the husband of Susan Cox Powell broke his silence to say his wife is “extremely unstable,” and that he believes mental illness drove her to leave her family behind.
Only reduced scrutiny from her family and the public, he said, will speed her return.
“She knows she will be chewed up like hamburger when she comes back,” Josh Powell said in a Wednesday interview with The Salt Lake Tribune.
He complained his wife’s family has created an image of her that puts her under too much pressure.
“She can’t come back with them treating her this way,” Josh Powell said. “They want her to be perfect, a saint with no fallibility.”
Susan’s family and friends have openly criticized Josh Powell’s level of cooperation with investigators and recounted instances of controlling and abusive behavior toward his wife. Yet Josh Powell said his wife’s family must stop lying about him and be more accepting of an imperfect Susan.
“She doesn’t have as much strength as they like to think she has,” Josh Powell said.
But he also tearfully described Susan as “a good person and a good wife and a good mother.”
Susan’s parents say they aren’t the problem, and that their son-in-law and his family are unhappy they have been criticized. They continue to believe their daughter would never have left her two young sons.
“It’s clear with them they need to blame somebody,” said Susan’s father, Chuck Cox, during an interview at his Puyallup home.
—
He says she’s alive • Police have called Josh Powell the only person of interest in his wife’s Dec. 7 disappearance from their home in West Valley City.
Josh Powell declined to answer many questions about the investigation and at points asked his father, Steve, not to bring up some subjects.
But Josh Powell stuck by his previous statements: that he last saw his wife as he left her at home and took their sons, then ages 2 and 4, on a late-night camping trip to the west desert in the family’s blue minivan. He and the children stayed warm in the freezing temperatures with a generator and heater he had purchased two weeks earlier, Josh Powell said. Police have since seized the equipment, he said.
“Susan was with me at the generator store,” Josh Powell said, but was unable to remember the name of the store.
As for the wet spot police found on the carpet of Josh and Susan Powell’s home the day after her disappearance, Steve Powell said his daughter-in-law had decided to clean the carpets. There was a red spot on the carpet underneath the couch, he said.
“It was probably juice or something,” Steve Powell said.
Steve Powell said an FBI agent who came to his Puyallup home on May 11 told him the bureau, after reviewing evidence gathered by West Valley City police, does not believe Josh Powell had anything to do with the disappearance and that Susan is alive.
That agent, and others from the U.S. Marshals service, were there to retrieve a GPS tracking device secretly attached to Susan and Josh Powell’s Dodge Caravan. Two court orders, signed by a federal magistrate in Salt Lake City and reviewed by The Tribune, indicate the device was attached to the van in January.
An FBI spokeswoman on Friday declined to comment.
Also on May 11, Steve Powell gave agents permission to search his home, according to other documents provided by the family. Josh Powell also gave permission for authorities to search the storage sheds at his home in West Valley City.
Police there have said Josh Powell has not responded to requests for additional interviews. However, Steve Powell said when his son returned to Utah from Washington in December, his attorney told police he would meet them for another interview. Steve Powell claims the detectives said they only work Monday through Thursday. Josh Powell was arriving on a Friday. The interview did not occur.
“How interested were these people in talking to Josh?” Steve Powell asked rhetorically.
Josh Powell said he will not meet with West Valley City police again.
Steve Powell said he has spoken to law enforcement multiple times, including a three-hour interview on Dec. 17 with West Valley City police detectives who traveled to Puyallup. The two detectives spent most of the time gathering information about Susan, Steve Powell said.
Steve Powell believes his daughter-in-law ran off with a boyfriend. He said Susan talked with her friends about sex and the sexual encounters she had before meeting her husband.
“Susan’s very sexually motivated, and she’s very financially motivated,” Steve Powell said.
At the end of the interview with detectives, Steve Powell said, he allowed them to search his home for Susan.
West Valley City police Sgt. Mike Powell, a department spokesman who is not related to the Puyallup Powells, declined to talk about evidence in the case. As for whether detectives decline to work on a Friday, he said: “We make all sorts of accommodations under all sorts of difficult circumstances.”

‘Hate wagon’ • Josh Powell spent much of the interview discussing Susan’s parents, Chuck and Judy Cox.
“Someone needs to take the velvet gloves off and treat [the Coxes] like an investigative subject,” Josh Powell said.
He accused them of directing what he referred to as a “hate wagon” where their supporters go on Facebook and accuse Josh Powell of murdering his wife and other bad behavior.
Instead, Josh Powell said his wife’s family mental history might be to blame for her running away. He claimed Judy Cox is prone to uncontrollable crying and emotional outbursts and said he wonders whether Susan inherited those traits.
Josh Powell said his wife would sometimes yell at him while chasing him around the dining room table. Another time, Susan ran down their street in West Valley City in her underwear to yell at him, he said.
Meanwhile, Chuck Cox is controlling and manipulative, Josh Powell claimed.
“You can’t escape the fact that he is the puppet master,” Josh Powell said.
The Coxes expected their daughter to be perfect, Josh Powell said. But Josh Powell claims they also tried to undermine their daughters’ relationships with their husbands by encouraging them to keep secret bank accounts and make false reports of abuse.
The Coxes, Josh Powell, said, “are entirely motivated by image.”
He accused the Coxes of lying about his behavior, including that he mishandled the family finances. Josh Powell said a 2007 bankruptcy was the result of a bad investment he made in telephone-book advertising for his real-estate firm. But he said he and Susan were combining to earn about $100,000 a year when she disappeared. The couple had even been shopping for a pop-up camping trailer, he said.
Josh Powell also questioned why his wife’s family began using her maiden name in references to her. He believes the family did so to disassociate her from Josh Powell and for financial reasons.
Josh Powell said he bought all the website domain names similar to his wife’s name, but the Cox family wanted to be able to start a foundation and raise money in association with Susan and began referring to her with both surnames.
Their Susan Cox Powell Foundation is a registered not-for-profit corporation with the state of Washington. Its stated mission is to help families of missing people and raise awareness of domestic violence.
“They are trying to solicit donations on the bull---- idea I am an abuser,” Josh Powell said.
The Coxes and Josh Powell’s estranged sister, Jennifer Graves, are among the board members.
—
A different story • Jennifer Graves and her husband, Kirk, who live in West Jordan, told The Tribune on Friday that Josh and Steve Powell have concocted a story to cover up their involvement in Susan’s disappearance.
“They need an explanation for why she’s not around,” Kirk Graves said. “He can’t say ‘Of course, she’s not around because I killed her.’ ”
The Graves balked at assertions that Susan was “sexually and financially motivated” to leave her marriage.
“They’ve basically accused Susan of being a slut, and it’s offensive to me,” Jennifer Graves said. “She was not. She was frustrated with her marriage.”
Jennifer Graves said the idea that Susan had a boyfriend is particularly laughable because those who knew her also knew she couldn’t keep a secret.
“She was such a talker, it would have gotten out,” Jennifer Graves said.
She said her sister-in-law was frustrated that her relationship with Josh Powell lacked intimacy. Susan wanted that to improve, but Josh refused, Jennifer Graves said.
The Graveses also shot down Josh Powell’s assertion that Susan is mentally ill and that Chuck Cox is controlling.
The irony, the Graveses said, is that one of Josh Powell’s brothers has been diagnosed as bipolar and schizophrenic. Steve Powell, they said, is a controlling person who often drives the actions of some of his children. With mental illness running in the family, the Graveses wonder if Josh might be the one suffering from it.
“Josh has some of the same tendencies, only very mild,” Jennifer Graves said of her brother’s similarities to their bipolar brother.
The Graveses say Josh Powell was responsible for the family’s bankruptcy. Susan maintained excellent credit, they said, while Josh’s scores had slumped because of repeatedly bad financial decisions.
Chuck and Judy Cox also say no one in their family has been diagnosed with or possesses significant signs of mental illness.
“We have both seen psychiatrists since this started,” Chuck Cox said referring to his daughter’s disappearance, “who have told us we are doing very well, except we’re mildly depressed.”
Chuck Cox said he encouraged his daughter to keep a separate bank account because Josh Powell was controlling the family finances and their daughter did not have money for food, diapers and clothes for her sons.
Susan would gain access to her and Josh Powell’s account and Josh Powell “would change the account numbers and the PIN numbers,” Chuck Cox said.
Chuck Cox said his daughter saw a marriage counselor and that counselor also suggested a separate account.
Friends of Susan told The Tribune in late December that she was keeping a separate bank account and arranging for a place to go in the event she needed to leave her husband. The friends, who requested anonymity at that time because police had asked them not to speak to the media, said Susan was worried Josh Powell might kidnap their children and try to break her financially.
Members of the Cox family have also said Susan spoke of a divorce if things didn’t improve by her April anniversary.
The Coxes acknowledge they inserted Susan’s maiden name to disassociate her from her husband and to create a unique name for the foundation. However, they say they did that because their daughter would not want to remain married to Josh Powell if she knew how he has “impeded” the investigation into her disappearance.
The Coxes said the foundation has raised about $2,000.
“Mostly it’s our money and a few contributions,” Chuck Cox said.
Josh Powell said he allowed the Coxes to see his sons periodically after Susan’s disappearance but that he told them not to discuss the children with reporters.
The Coxes did discuss the boys, though it was usually to say they wanted to see them more often. Josh Powell said he considered discussion of the issue to be a violation of his sons’ privacy and that he will not let the Coxes visit the children if they continue to discuss the children.
“Whether or not they ever have contact with my sons is their choice based on their own behavior,” he said.
Yet information about Charlie, 5, and Braden, 3, is given out periodically on a website, Josh and Steve Powell maintain. The site recounts school projects, how the boys spent their Mother’s Day, and other information about them. The boys’ faces are blurred.

Life in Puyallup • Josh Powell and his children continue to live with Steve Powell. A brother and sister of Josh also live in the home.
Josh Powell said he has taken a job to which he commutes every day, though he declined to discuss where his job is or in what field. Charlie is attending kindergarten at a school near Steven Powell’s home.
On Thursday night, the boys ate a dinner of tacos and played in the living room while Josh and Steve Powell discussed the events of the past 11 months. Steve Powell said because they don’t know where Susan is, they have only told the boys that their mother is missing.
“All they know is she’s gone, and they want her back,” he said.
Josh Powell said he has been attending Parent Teacher Association meetings at Charlie’s school, despite objections from some parents. He criticized television station coverage of those objections.
“I’m a Marvel Comics super villain,” he said of the coverage.
Josh Powell said he will not move back to Utah nor attend The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — where he met his wife — again. Steve Powell, a former church member, has alleged members including the Coxes have waged a campaign against his son, something the Coxes have also adamantly denied.
Steve Powell said he and his son expect to see Susan again. People wanting to find his daughter-in-law’s body to produce closure are “a bunch of morbid f------ assholes,” Steve Powell said.
“She absconded,” Steve Powell said. “We don’t believe she was abducted. We don’t believe she was murdered.”
Josh Powell said he has not granted previous interview requests because the people criticizing him did not deserve a response.
“They underestimate my discipline,” Josh Powell said.

Life is under a microscope for Susan Powell’s husband
The home didn’t use to have a fence.
A year ago, Steve Powell’s home had an open backyard, like most in this community in suburban Seattle.
Then his daughter-in-law, Susan, disappeared from the West Valley City home she shared with Josh Powell and their two young sons. Josh Powell moved in with his father after being named by police as the only person of interest in his wife’s disappearance.
The brown, wooden privacy fence went up not long afterward, said Brooke Thomas, a neighbor in the Silver Creek subdivision.
“When he’s out,” Thomas said of Josh Powell, “I watch to see what he’s doing.”
Such is life for the Powell family here. They have tried to maintain some privacy since Josh Powell moved and his wife’s disappearance became the subject of national headlines — mostly, the family says, for the sake of the boys, ages 5 and 3. But when the family goes out, they are noticed.
“Josh built the fence to provide a safe place for his children to play outside because they are very young,” Steve Powell said last week in an e-mail to The Salt Lake Tribune.
In a November interview, Steve and Josh Powell said they had received strong support from family, extended family and neighbors. Every weekend, Josh Powell said, he takes his sons on an activity.
One Powell supporter in Silver Creek has been neighbor Curt Dildine, who said he invited the Powells to his home after feeling that a flier campaign in the neighborhood was harassing Josh Powell when he had not been charged with a crime.
“I said, ‘You know what? I don’t know if you did it or not,’ ” Dildine recalled. “ ‘If you did it, I hope to hang you from the highest tree. If not, this ain’t right.’ ”
Dildine said on the first visit to his home, Josh and Steve Powell described what they have claimed were Susan Powell’s tendencies to quickly become angry or sad and to leave at odd hours of the day and night.
“I said, ‘You know, from your story, it sounds like she got a boyfriend and decided to roll,’ ” Dildine said. His opinion of the neighbors or what might have happened to Susan Powell has not changed in the months since.
“I have no reason not to like [Josh Powell] so far,” Dildine said.
Josh and Susan Powell are both from Puyallup. When Josh Powell moved back, it attracted the attention of a few residents in Silver Creek.
Colleen Russell saw the Susan Powell case on television and felt a connection to the missing woman because they both sold Mary Kay products.
“It was frightening for us,” Russell said, referring to herself and her friends in the area. “We just decided since he’s moving into the neighborhood, let’s put some fliers up.”

Re: Steven Koecher missing in Utah since December 2009/ Susan Powell's family reacts to what they call new lies/Media attention opens old wounds, new hopes by Rolf D Koecher/ Josh Powell: 'I'm Not Angry' at Missing Wife Susan
I wish the Cox family would sue Josh Powell and his Father for slander. I also wish they would sue for custody of those boys for I feel the Powell men are poisoning those little boys minds against their Mother and Grandparents.
If Susan's body is found, I hope Josh's Dad is charged with accessory.
Those Powell men are the sickos. JMO..

I agree, Raine. What other ridiculous stories are they going to think up? I REALLY hope & pray that Susan's body is found... but it looks like another winter is now upon us, so that won't be likely until the spring again.
BTW, I sure wouldn't blame her for taking off with another man - it must have been a NIGHTMARE living with Josh!!

I find it hard to believe that a mother would walk off and leave 2 beautiful children. Looking at Susan Powell, it does not seem like she would do this. Josh taking his 2 little boys on that camping trip in a frigid winter storm really makes one wonder.

Josh Powell: 'I'm Not Angry' at Missing Wife Susan
A year after Susan Powell's suspicious disappearance, her husband Josh is suggesting she ran off with another man.
"For many months, I waited, expecting her to come home any day," Josh tells PEOPLE. "I don't know how to feel at this point. I loved her, you know? I'm not angry at her."
Josh, who was named a person of interest by West Valley City, Utah, police early in the investigation, says he last saw his wife the night of Dec. 6, 2009, before he drove off with their young sons into a winter storm for an overnight camping trip.
Josh's Web site suggests Susan ran off with a Utah man named Steven Koecher, who disappeared around the same time.
"The Powells believe that finding Koecher may be the best lead to finding Susan," says the Web site, which is written by Josh and his father, Steve Powell, out of their Puyallup, Wash. home.
Photos of Mom
Josh tells PEOPLE he is just trying to raise the couple's sons, ages 5 and 3, and move on with his life. The boys have photos of their mom in their bedroom, and when they ask about her, "We just tell them she's not here at the moment, that she loves them and misses them," Powell says.
A spokeswoman for Susan's family says the Koecher lead is a red herring that police investigated and dismissed early in the case.
"Steve and Josh Powell continue to make absurd allegations, and the Cox family feels badly that the Koecher family has now been affected by the Powells' attempt to widen the swath of accusations," says Shelby Gifford, referring to tirades on Josh's Web site against family members who have openly suggested that Josh is responsible for Susan's disappearance.
West Valley City police say they're still investigating Susan's disappearance and they're not discussing details such as whether they investigated a connection to Koecher's disappearance.
Continuing Investigation
"We continue to ask the public to contact us with any information that might lead us to Susan Powell or help us understand more about the disappearance of Susan Powell," says Sgt. Mike Powell.
To mark the anniversary of Susan's disappearance on Dec. 7, 2009, her parents and other family and friends on Monday evening held a family story-time in Utah and wrapped gifts for needy families in Puyallup, Wash (where both families live). On Tuesday, they will be distributing new flyers in Utah, seeking information on Susan's disappearance.

Inside story: Media attention opens old wounds, new hopes by Rolf D Koecher
Rolf D. Koecher, Editor
We were heading to our oldest son’s house Saturday evening to be with his kids while he and his wife attended a company Christmas party.
Just before we left the house, however, he called to say, “Dad, you might want to wear a shirt suitable to be seen in on television.”
He added that NBC cameras would be there to interview us for a brief segment on Monday morning’s Today Show. A version of the segment would also appear on KSL-TV that night.
In the intervening days, we have also talked to the Deseret News, The Salt Lake Tribune, the Ogden Standard-Examiner, media sources in Washington state, Deseret News columnist Lee Benson, People magazine and other local TV stations.
The best way to explain how we feel about this is to note it has re-opened wounds that were healing.
We had been meaning to let the next few days pass quietly, but due to the new flurry of media attention, we need to let Clipper readers know our position. And it’s a bit complicated
Essentially, Josh Powell and his father Steve have launched a new website in conjunction with the one-year anniversary of the disappearance of West Valley mother Susan Powell.
The site displays a photo of my son Steven, next to a photo of Susan Powell, Josh Powell’s wife.
In the information that follows, it alleges in part that the Powells believe Susan has run off to Brazil with my son Steven. In addition, the Powell website lists even more strange possibilities.
To be sure, websites by other parties also offer every weird scenario imaginable.
Our relatives have tried to shield us from many of these allegations, but we have examined several of them. And so have Las Vegas, Henderson and St. George police.
Just to be thorough, they have checked out a number of these theories — even some proffered by psychics.
Henderson detectives on several occasions have checked out rocks, ravines and fields suggested by psychics just to make sure — but have always found nothing.
So while there are many theories out there, we have encountered very little to substantiate them. To make our position clear, I will stick strictly to the evidence that has been found — not simply what we as a family would like to believe.
So here’s our position. As I said, it’s a bit complicated:
1. We are not upset at the Powell family for making these assertions. We realize they are going through a hard time and understand they may be grasping at straws.
2. The facts, however, don’t lead to their conclusion. That’s because police checked airline boardings out of Las Vegas for a period of several months. Steven was not on a plane that departed from McCarran International Airport.
We, ourselves, thought for a time that Steven might have gone to Brazil because he asked me for his passport about a month before he disappeared. However, we eventually found the passport among his possessions
That discovery hit us like so many other things in this baffling situation: We were happy to know he hadn’t fled the country, but saddened to realize another clue had vanished.
2. Which points out that seemingly logical theories often turn out to be just that: mere theories that evaporate when confronted by facts.
3. We also have not sought media involvement just for attention’s sake — our only interest has always been to find a clue that might lead us to Steven. That’s why we have preferred to focus on things that could have a chance of finding him, not something that has no other object than attracting attention.
4. We do see a bright side in all this because if the wider media attention sparks just a single solid lead, it will have been worth the added upheaval to our lives. And, oddly enough, we would be happy to know that our son was living in Brazil because knowing he is safe and happy beats continuing to remain in the dark.
5. And just as the Brazil theory can be easily dismissed by the facts, so can many of the Powells’ other assertions — especially links to Steven’s being in West Valley. Our copies of bank records show that Steven had bought gas in Salt Lake City — not West Valley – in the days after Susan Powell’s disappearance. Another website that has been tracking Steven’s situation shows the same data and features the disclaimer that its timeline does not support the one offered by the Powells.
I could say much more, but this should suffice.
While we remain open to any possibility or further information that may be found, investigations by police and others do not support any link to Susan Powell, to a new life in Brazil or to other unusual theories.

Susan, we love you and miss you!
Susan, we love you and miss you!
Susan Powell, missing December 7, 2009.
Susan Powell went missing in West Valley City, Utah on December 7, 2009. It has been one year since she left and SusanPowell.org is now changing its focus to begin responding to the rumors surrounding Susan Powell and other individuals. The ongoing efforts to protect the children will remain paramount as Susan Powell's family corrects the record.
Correcting the record
SusanPowell.org remains the official source for information about Susan Powell and the family she loves. Susan Powell's family (the Powells) started SusanPowell.org as an effort to contact Susan and share some happy moments that were meant to be positive and uplifting. We have not responded directly to negative and defamatory comments until now because Josh and the rest of us expected Susan to return quickly and Josh didn't want to drive wedges between the Coxes (in-laws) and Josh's own family. Josh remains sympathetic toward them in spite of their total lack of sympathy toward him. All of us are sympathetic to the people who miss Susan as we do.
Unfortunately, the more we published on SusanPowell.org with nothing but love and uplifting comments, the nastier the Cox "Friends and Family" became toward Josh, Josh's supporters, this web site, and the children. Individuals professing support for the Cox "Friends and Family" continually belittle and silence anyone hinting of support or even neutrality toward Josh. To this date, fully a year later, the Cox "Friends and Family" supporters still behave this way, even shouting down those who raise legitimate questions and doubts about Susan and her parents.
The situation is not fair to anyone and we recognize this fact. Josh has grieved for the wife he loves, while the Coxes and their supporters continue to ridicule his suffering and that of everyone around him. For many months, Josh tried to forgive them - even as they set him up as their straw man. We remained silent in the public media to allow future healing of Josh's relationships with the Coxes and to allow the investigation to proceed unhindered. At this point, we recognize that we cannot remain silent forever in the face of rumors and lies being spread by individuals associated with the Cox "Friends and Family".
False claims about Josh and Susan Powell
Since December 2009 the Cox "Friends and Family" and Chuck Cox himself have repeatedly made claims intended to portray Josh as an all-around bad guy with absolutely no redeeming qualities. Even though the media has been one sided and highly sensationalized, the Coxes' extreme position has led many people to question the credibility of people in the Cox "Friends and Family" group. Every claim made against Josh comes with no witnesses, no evidence, and many contradictions in their own statements. Their claims are simply untrue.
The truth cannot be hidden forever. Many of their accusations about what they call "strange" behavior in Josh actually describe natural human individuality and even necessary responses to the Coxes' own actions. Further, with the exception of Chuck and Judy Cox, every person making such claims has had absolutely no contact with Josh's family after January 2010. Most of them had limited to no relationship prior to that.
The Coxes claim they have certain rights with Josh and his children, but from the beginning they have attempted to alienate Josh from everyone he has ever known. According to a Salt Lake Tribune article published on November 6, 2010, Chuck and Judy Cox even stated that they created a pseudonym for Susan Powell ("Susan Cox Powell") for the purpose of divorcing Susan from Josh because they say "their daughter would not want to remain married to Josh Powell if she knew how he has 'impeded' the investigation into her disappearance." In point of fact, the Coxes have actually impeded the investigation by attempting to silence alternative viewpoints, by hiding facts about Susan and their own family, and by grossly misleading people about Josh.
At the same time, the Coxes have constantly driven the idea that Susan is perfect in every way (in accordance with their own narrow viewpoint) and they have thus denied her humanity. Both Josh and Susan are multidimensional individuals with many qualities and characteristics. Both Josh and Susan are very misunderstood at this point because of the strange image the Cox "Friends and Family" have tried to portray surrounding the Coxes, Susan, Josh, and even the children.
Cyber-bullies on the Cox "Friends and Family" Facebook page
What the Cox "Friends and Family" supporters continually do is abusive. Some of their primary vehicles include Facebook and other social networking sites. Even if they desire to inflict abuse on an innocent person because of their own judgments, there is absolutely no justification for what they are doing to the children. Every time the children are mentioned, strangers associated with the Cox "Friends and Family" outright attack the children with claims that the children are psychologically disturbed and other defamations. Even if the Cox "Friends and Family" could stay focused, they cannot separate their abuse and cyber-bullying of Josh from its harmful effects on Susan and the children. The Coxes have acknowledged the destructive effects of their own actions on the children, and yet continue with their tactics. Their intention to destroy a loving father's emotional well-being with their rumors and lies is shameful and unproductive.
Some people claim that Josh has no right to respond to their accusations - some of which are the worst accusations possible. Cox "Friends and Family" supporters and the sensationalized media are shouting in a chorus that any response by us is just "Josh being mean" or Josh "trying to deflect law-enforcement attention from himself." Why? Because we have claimed that Susan is capable of doing things that the Coxes don't want to acknowledge to the world. We understand this is hard for them, but not as hard as what they are doing to the husband who will always love Susan and to the children from their marriage. But what hurts us most is that we know their rhetoric is hurting Susan. Therefore, we do intend to respond to some things at this point. We also think it will help Susan understand what her parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, have refused to acknowledge or accept over the years.
Protecting Susan and the children
Susan needs help. At this point, Susan Powell's family believes very strongly that the ongoing rhetoric of the Cox "Friends and Family" is having a tragic effect on Susan's emotional well-being as well as Josh's. Susan knows that she cannot return without having people of the same mentality as the Cox "Friends and Family" turn on her. As difficult as it has been for Josh to cope with this, we believe that in Susan's emotional state she will not be able to face it.
We are re-evaluating the best ways to protect the children in light of our family's total lack of privacy. We wish we could share happy family moments with Susan on SusanPowell.org without fear of the vocal minority encouraging predatory behavior against the children. However, SusanPowell.org will not be publishing private family moments at this time. Instead, SusanPowell.org will continue provide factual information.

Re: Steven Koecher missing in Utah since December 2009/ Susan Powell's family reacts to what they call new lies/Media attention opens old wounds, new hopes by Rolf D Koecher/ Josh Powell: 'I'm Not Angry' at Missing Wife Susan
Nothing like a punch to the gut on an anniversary you never wanted to observe.
It was a year ago yesterday that 28-year-old mom and housewife Susan Powell disappeared from her home in West Valley City and a year ago this coming Monday that 30-year-old Steven Koecher, a resident of St. George at the time, was last seen walking away from his car in Henderson, Nev.
For the 12 longest months of their lives, the families of these two Utahns, gone without a trace in the prime of life, have had to endure despair followed by repeated disappointment as exhaustive law enforcement investigations and massive volunteer searches have yielded no credible leads in either case.
Now, as the cold of December returns, a new twist has emerged about what happened to them.
Susan Powell and Steven Koecher ran off together, it is being speculated. They're alive and well and living most likely in Brazil, where Koecher was once a missionary.
It's a scenario that transforms Susan and Steven from victims into cheats and crooks.
The sole source for this conjecture comes from a website, SusanPowell.org, maintained by Susan's husband, Josh, and Josh's father, Steve Powell.
The website points out that Susan and Steven are about the same age, both are members of the LDS Church and, according to a timeline generated by Steve Powell, Koecher was in West Valley City a year ago.
Under that criteria, tens of thousands more who fit the above description — around 30, LDS and who passed through West Valley City in late 2009 — would qualify instantly as suspects.
The supposition is 100 percent innuendo, originating from the only person who has come under suspicion in either case — that would be Susan's husband Josh, whose alibi the night his wife disappeared (he said he went camping with the couple's two young sons, in December, at midnight) is suspect and whose behavior ever since (he moved out of state and to this day has not talked to police) could best be described as unusual.
And yet, as the one-year mark approached, the media, both print and broadcast, somehow saw fit this past weekend to publicly air the speculation.
You wonder what's next: breaking news on O.J.'s latest theories on who killed Nicole?
For obvious reasons, both Susan Powell's and Steven Koecher's families have expressed dismay at the National Enquirer-like headlines generated by the Josh Powell rumor mill. It would be excusable if there were a scintilla of tangible evidence to support the claims of Josh and his father that Susan and Steven dumped their lives and families — including the children Susan adored — to escape to a love nest in the rain forest.
But there isn't one scintilla of tangible evidence.
All the story succeeds in doing — for those who don't consider the source — is disparage the missing and add grief for their loved ones.
Not only has the good character of both Susan Powell and Steven Koecher stood up for an entire year under the closest of police scrutiny, but there has never been anything to even remotely suggest they ever crossed paths.
Phone records were checked and cross-checked. Neither person called the other or called anyone the other called.
Best friends and family — the closest confidants of the missing persons — were interviewed and re-interviewed. No one suggested either Susan or Steven was seeing anyone else.
The only verifiable time Steven Koecher was anywhere near the Powell's home was for a volleyball game in West Valley City with friends on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, 2009, a week and a half before Susan Powell disappeared, after which he returned to his parents' home in Bountiful.
The police departments in the respective jurisdictions have met and shared all their evidence and found nothing.
"Everything they say is not founded in truth or reality, it's just scenarios," says Rolf Koecher, Steven's father, of the website conjecture. "Their assertions have opened up wounds that were healing.
"It sounds strange," Rolf adds, "but we'd be happy to know they're alive and safe — to know Steven is safe and not hurting, needing a rescue from somewhere."
He pauses, a dad dealing with a year's worth of unimaginable grief.
"But this isn't even on our radar that it's a possibility. We don't give it 10 seconds of thought. This is all innuendo and no evidence."
And incredibly cruel.
