Gabriel Morris gets TWO CONSECUTIVE LIFE SENTENCES for the murders of his mother, Robin Lynn Anstey and her friend Robert William Kennelly Jr - Page 2 Empty The internet

Post by Nama Mon Feb 22, 2010 2:18 pm

The Internet found the Morris family a place to live in Virginia a few days ago -- and led to their capture Monday in connection with a double homicide in Coquille, Ore.
Law enforcement officials said the Morris family had been staying in Dumfries, Va., for a couple days at the home of someone they met on the Internet. A resident of the home, which police said had many adult residents, became suspicious of Morris after seeing a segment on "America's Most Wanted" and searched his name on the Internet, discovering he was wanted for murder in Oregon.

The resident phoned the tip in to Prince William County law enforcement. The U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force went into action, staking out the home and moving in as Morris and his wife tried to leave the house.

Investigators feared that once confronted, Morris might try and harm his wife and daughter who were traveling with him, U.S. Marshals said. However, Morris left the home in a Ford Explorer with the female homeowner of the house where the family was staying. His wife Jessica and daughter left the house at the same time in the same silver Ford Taurus with Oregon plates that investigators identified after the victims' bodies were discovered almost two weeks ago, according to the U.S. Marshals.

Morris was armed with a .45 caliber handgun but taken into custody without incident, Marshals said.

Rita Pope, who lives in Idaho, said Morris told family members that terrorists killed his mother and her boyfriend. She and her husband said they were relieved to hear Morris had been arrested and that her daughter and granddaughter were safe.
“As far as I know everybody is okay and we are anxiously awaiting word that we can go and get our daughter,” said Bill Pope, who Monday afternoon was trying to decide which Washington area airport to fly to so he could be with his daughter and grandchild.
“I do know because of the spirit and the nature of my daughter that I’m sure she wasn’t involved in it. He probably threatened her and told her he would kill her if she didn’t stay right with him.”
Police in Oregon had a warrant out for Jessica Morris, seeking her as a material witness to murder. She was taken into police custody Monday as she and Kalea left the home in Dumfries, Chinn said.
Rita Pope said Virginia is one of the last places they would have suspected Morris to be.
During their time on the run, police said the family made stops in San Diego, and Mesa, Ariz., using the Ford Taurus that Morris borrowed from a friend in Oregon.
In order to get the car, Morris told a friend that terrorists killed his mother and her boyfriend, and that they would come for him and his family next, said Rita Pope.
Gabriel and Jessica Morris have been married for eight years, and during that time have fought about his financial problems stemming from credit card debt, as well as bouts with infidelity, according to Bill Pope.
Rita Pope said for years her daughter had been the only one working to support their family, holding jobs as a secretary for her father’s business, and most recently working as a bookkeeper.
In August, Morris left his wife and daughter to go live in Oregon to be near his mother, said Pope.
Rita Pope said she pleaded with her daughter not to go to Oregon in an attempt to reconcile the marriage. Against her mother’s advice, Jessica Morris took her daughter to Oregon to be with Morris one month later.
“She knew he was in debt, but I don’t think she really knew how bad it was until she got out there,” said Pope.
Police said detectives from Oregon are headed to Prince William County to continue their investigation.

Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier and several detectives flew to Virginia on Monday to conduct further investigations.

Both Gabriel and Jessica are entitled to court hearings in Virginia. Frasier says that if the Morrises contest extradition, they won't be returned to Oregon for several weeks or months. If they waive extradition, they could be returned in as little as a couple of weeks.

Gabriel Morris gets TWO CONSECUTIVE LIFE SENTENCES for the murders of his mother, Robin Lynn Anstey and her friend Robert William Kennelly Jr - Page 2 Empty Morrises stay in Virginia for now

Post by mommyof3kids Tue Feb 23, 2010 3:24 pm

PORTLAND -- Police aren't identifying the Virginia man who turned in fugitive Gabriel Morris, but they say Morris met him online.

Coos County investigators headed to Virginia on Monday afternoon to continue an investigation that has revealed the double-homicide suspect apparently used friends and strangers to elude capture.

Morris is wanted in the Feb. 8 shooting deaths of his mother, Robin Anstey, 62, and her boyfriend, Robert Kennelly Jr., 48, at Kennelly's home outside Bandon. The state has filed two counts of aggravated murder against Gabriel Morris, while seeking his wife, Jessica Morris, as a material witness after the two fled the state with their 4-year-old daughter.

Police arrested the Morrises on Monday morning, after police got a tip from an acquaintance who read about the killings on the Internet. Police took the family into custody in Dumfries, Va., according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

The Morris' flight ended in the town of Dumfries, after a man at the home where the family was staying grew suspicious of Gabriel Morris and did an Internet search of his name Monday morning. The search popped up reports of the slayings, as well as a fugitive notice on the "America's Most Wanted" Web page.

The person, who was not identified, then contacted police.

Prince William County officers, including a SWAT team, surrounded the house. Police arrested Gabriel Morris as he drove away from the place in a Ford Explorer with a man from the house. Morris was carrying a loaded .45 caliber handgun, police said.

"He didn't run. He cooperated," said 1st Sgt. Kim Chinn, spokeswoman for the Prince William County Police.

Jessica Morris and her daughter were stopped in a separate vehicle and taken into custody.

The Ford Taurus the couple took from a Coquille couple was found at the house.

While detectives interviewed the Morrises, their daughter, Kalea, was "being entertained by police officers, eating snacks, being cute as a button," Chinn said.

Officials expected to place the girl into custody with family members.

Gabriel Morris and his family arrived in Virginia sometime last week, after being tracked to San Diego and spotted on a surveillance camera in Mesa, Ariz., investigators said. The family was staying at the home of an acquaintance they had met online, said Coos County District Attorney R. Paul Frasier.

Gabriel Morris and his family were last seen in Coos County on Feb. 8.

Frasier said Gabriel and Jessica Morris will be held in Virginia until they can be returned to Oregon within the next couple of weeks or months, depending on whether they fight extradition.

"Everyone here is relieved that we've got them in custody," Frasier said. "And the biggest thing is nobody got hurt."http://www.theworldlink.com/articles/2010/02/23/news/couple_will_remain_in_va_995.txt

Gabriel Morris gets TWO CONSECUTIVE LIFE SENTENCES for the murders of his mother, Robin Lynn Anstey and her friend Robert William Kennelly Jr - Page 2 Empty Marijuana Operation

Post by Nama Tue Feb 23, 2010 6:09 pm

Gabriel Christian Morris made it 3,000 miles before authorities caught up with him Monday in a small town in northern Virginia.

He, his wife and their 4-year-old daughter had been hunted for 12 days, ever since authorities discovered the bodies of Morris’ mother and her boyfriend at their rural Bandon home on Feb. 10. Morris, 34, was featured on Saturday night’s episode of “America’s Most Wanted.”

But Morris already was in flight before Robin Anstey and Robert William Kennelly Jr. were killed, a crime Morris is accused of committing.

Morris was running from a mountain of debt, according to an affidavit the Coos County district attorney filed in the arrest warrant he issued for Morris and his wife, Jessica.

By the time Morris moved his wife and daughter, Kalea, in with Anstey and Kennelly, the Morris family was broke.

Gabriel Morris had worked as a sheriff’s deputy in Idaho, but he was no longer employed there by the time he left the state at the urging of his wife’s parents, Bill and Rita Pope of Blackfoot. They had given him $7,000 and watched it disappear. He’d also blown through a $100,000 settle ment check Jessica had acquired from an insurance company after a car accident, according to court records. “He’s a real scumbag, I’ll tell you,” said Rita Pope on Monday, after learning to her “relief” that her daughter and granddaughter were safe. “(Jessica) tried so hard to make that marriage work with him, and all he did was rip her off, and charge things to a credit card in her name,” Pope said. “He makes Tiger Woods look like a saint.”

The Popes advised Morris to go back to Coos County, where he grew up. File for bankruptcy. Start over. The couple loaned their daughter and her husband a truck to get to Oregon.

How or why Morris’ mother and boyfriend wound up dead is unclear, but it happened after Gabriel Morris asked to move into their rural home on Highway 42S, according to district attorney Paul Frasier’s affidavit. It also happened after Morris, Anstey and Kennelly jointly filed an application with the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program to grow pot, legally.

When they found Anstey and Kennelly dead, authorities also came upon a grow operation, according to an affidavit filed by Oregon State Police Detective John Riddle.

“Conspicuously absent from the grow room were any adult marijuana plants,” Riddle wrote. “As there appears to be missing adult marijuana plants from this marijuana grow, identifying the persons responsible or using the grow needs to be determined so as to determine if the marijuana is a possible motive in this case.”

Frasier has not speculated about what he believes Morris’ motive might be if he was the killer. But what happened after Anstey and Kennelly were found that day offers some insight into what came next, and how the Morris family made it across the country as quickly as they did.

According to Frasier’s affidavit, Morris showed up at the doorstep of an acquaintance in Coquille the night of the killings, his wife and daughter in tow.

Gabriel Morris knew teacher and Coquille School Board member Fred Eschler because he had dated one of Eschler’s daughters in the past, the man told police.

When Morris showed up at Eschler’s doorstep on Feb. 8, “he appeared to be very upset and scared,” according to Frasier’s affidavit.

Morris told Eschler in his wife’s presence that the couple had been working undercover for the U.S. Air Force, and that terrorists had killed his mother and her “friend.” Gabriel Morris had shot one of the terrorists, he said, and he needed .40 caliber ammunition and a ride to San Diego, quickly.

As Morris made his plea, Eschler told police, a handgun fell out of Morris’ clothing and onto the couch.

Eschler told Morris he didn’t have any such ammunition, and that he wouldn’t give him a ride to California.

What Eschler did give Morris was a silver Ford Taurus, $150 in cash, clothing and sleeping bags, and a 9mm semiautomatic handgun, with three additional loaded magazines.

Eschler’s wife, Laura, told authorities she tried to speak with Kalea, and that the girl said something to the effect of “Something happened to Grandma.” Her father stopped her, she said, and told the girl she was not to talk about what happened to Grandma.

“The Eschlers reported that they last saw the family in their car, with Jessica driving and Gabriel and the child lying down in the back seat,” Frasier wrote in his affidavit.

Eschler tried to report his concern about Morris to Coos County officials, but Frasier said he referred the man to the Federal Bureau of Investigation because he knew of no outstanding homicides in the county — Anstey and Kennelly’s bodies had yet to be discovered, at that point — and matters of terrorism were the federal government’s jurisdiction.

The next day, Frasier learned that the county sheriff had been investigating a missing-person call from the Women’s Safety and Resource Center, where Jessica Morris volunteered, and identified a Red GMC pickup truck Morris left at the Eschlers’ home in Coquille — the one loaned to him by the Popes — which helped link the two cases.

Deputies then traveled to Anstey and Kennelly’s home and found Anstey lying on the deck at the open front door, shot multiple times. Through the doorway and inside the house was Kennelly, lying on the floor, also shot multiple times. Both were dead.

The manhunt was on.

The search ended 12 days later in Virginia, when officials with the Prince William County Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Gabriel and Jessica Morris and took their daughter into custody.

Frasier left for Virginia Monday afternoon to gather evidence and conduct investigations in Dumfries, Va., where the Morris family was apprehended.

The couple had met a man online who lived there, and who let them stay in his home. But the man became suspicious of some of the things Gabriel Morris was telling him, checked him out online, and notified authorities when he found that Morris was wanted on murder charges, according to Prince William County Police Sgt. Kim Chinn. Police apprehended Morris without incident as he was driving away from the home in a borrowed car. Police also found Jessica Morris and Kalea in the silver Ford Taurus the family drove east from Oregon. Morris was armed with a loaded .45 caliber handgun.

Jessica Morris has not been charged with a crime, but Coos County officials had issued an arrest warrant for her as a material witness. Kalea remained at the station Monday afternoon, Chinn said.

Frasier said the Morrises will most likely be held in custody until court hearings in Virginia, at which they may decide to contest extradition to Oregon, which could delay their return to face charges here by several weeks or months.

If they waive extradition, the Morrises could be returned here in as little as a couple of weeks, Frasier said.

Gabriel Morris gets TWO CONSECUTIVE LIFE SENTENCES for the murders of his mother, Robin Lynn Anstey and her friend Robert William Kennelly Jr - Page 2 Empty Morrises held in detention center as parents fly in to visit their daughter

Post by Nama Tue Feb 23, 2010 7:52 pm

Rita and Bill Pope traveled nearly 2,200 miles to see their daughter, Jessica Morris, on Tuesday.
Morris is behind bars, charged in connection with a double murder in Oregon that made the television show "America's Most Wanted" and led to a cross-country manhunt.
Morris and her husband, Gabriel, were arrested Monday in Dumfries. Their 4-year-old daughter, who was with them, has been in the care of social services since.
Police say the family drove across the country after Gabriel Morris chatted online with someone in Dumfries.
A man who answered the door at the Dominion Drive home where the Morrises were staying said he called police after he searched Morris' name on the Web.
"I was shocked when I Googled his name, especially after getting word his case was shown on 'America's Most Wanted' just this past Saturday night," said the man, who declined to identify himself.
He went on to say he has known Gabriel for many years but said he had just met Jessica and their daughter when they arrived at the house this week.
"This whole thing is far from behind us … this has changed a lot of things between us," he said.
For Rita and Bill Pope of Idaho, they just wanted to make sure their daughter and granddaughter were safe.
They arrived at Dulles Airport on Tuesday morning and headed to the Garfield police station in Woodbridge looking for Morris and Kalea.
"We need to see our daughter, we're her parents and we've just flown in from Idaho," said Rita Pope, her hands shaking.
The Popes were told to go to the Prince William-Manassas regional jail, where they were nearly barred from seeing their daughter.
"There is no visitation allowed today, only on Thursdays," a jail employee said as they stepped into the lobby.
But soon an exception was made, and after the two showed their IDs to authorities, they were allowed to see Morris.
"She is not looking good and she doesn't want to talk about anything involving Gabriel unless an attorney is present," Bill Pope said.
Gabriel and Jessica Morris are being held in Virginia as fugitives from justice, and are scheduled to appear before a judge who will determine if they will be extradited to Oregon, said Prince William police spokeswoman Erika Hernandez.
Oregon prosecutors are also in Prince William County, interviewing the two.
The Popes also arranged to see their granddaughter Tuesday, though she remains in the care of social services because the couple does not have custody of her.
Rita Pope shed tears when police told her they gave Kalea a Happy Meal after her parents were arrested, and that she was running around, laughing and playing.
"Yesterday, we didn't know if we would ever see her alive again," Rita Pope said.
Questions about why Jessica Morris didn't call authorities while they were on the run remained unanswered Tuesday.
Bill Pope said his daughter looks like she's lost at least 30 pounds since he's last seen her, and is convinced she was forced to comply with her husband's demands.
"He is a very cruel person. He probably told her that 'if you try to make a run for it I'll kill you and Kalea, or I'll kill you, Kalea and your parents,'" said Pope.

Gabriel Morris gets TWO CONSECUTIVE LIFE SENTENCES for the murders of his mother, Robin Lynn Anstey and her friend Robert William Kennelly Jr - Page 2 Empty "I think because they are good family oriented people” said Shrum. “He went to church with them."

Post by Nama Wed Feb 24, 2010 2:31 am

Before the Morris family left Oregon and ignited a nation-wide manhunt, court papers show the Morris's showed up at Fred and Laura Eschler's home in Coquille. Gabriel claimed that terrorists had killed his mother and her friend.

Gabriel Morris is wanted for the murder of his mother, Robin Anstey, and her boyfriend, Robert Kennelly. Morris and his wife Jessica were arrested yesterday in Dumfries, Virginia after they were featured on America's Most Wanted.

Debby Shrum called police Feb. 10 to report an unfamiliar truck in front of her house. Police traced the owner and were led to the bodies of Robin Anstey and Robert Kennelly in Bandon. But two days before on Feb. 8, the suspect, Gabriel Morris, had been on the same street the truck was parked. He was at the Eschler's home.

"I think because they are good family oriented people” said Shrum. “He went to church with them."

According to court documents, Gabriel appeared to be "very upset and scared" and told the Eschler family that he and his wife Jessica were “working undercover for the U. S. Air Force.” Gabriel also said that “terrorists killed his mother and her friend.”

"From what I understand they believed him” said District Attorney Paul Frasier. “I have no concrete proof that would suggest otherwise."

Gabriel asked the Eschler family for help to get out of town. Court papers reveal Fred Eschler gave Gabriel a handgun, $150 in cash and a vehicle. The Morris family left town that night. Fred Eschler waited and called Frasier the next day.

"They fled the area very quickly” said Frasier. “I doubt very seriously that we probably would have been able to catch them quicker than what we did.”

Shrum says the Eschler family was only trying to help the Morris family.

“I think that people try to think good of other people and they are the type that does that” said Shrum.

Frasier said when he received the call from Fred Eschler, he told Eschler to contact the FBI directly. Since Gabriel claimed he was working for the Federal Government. Frasier says since they had no reports of a murder in Bandon, he assumed Gabriel was talking about something in the past. It wasn't until they found the bodies the next day that all the pieces fell into place.

Isn't this kind of a small town? I can see why Frasier referred him to the FBI, but If he said his mother and her friend were murdered by "terrorists" then wouldn't it have been prudent to do a welfare check on the family--mother and friend?

I agree, prudent and smart. I can maybe see a unsophisticated, trusting, naive person believing this story, but not a person in LE. Why would a couple working undercover with a government agency need the help of a civilian? Why would they take a child with them if they were in danger? IDK, as I said before, something sounds "off" about this story to me. But knowing about another case from this same area, Leah's case and the handling (not) for all these years, makes me think "someone" in LE is either too unsophisticated, trusting and naive or incompetent and unqualified or complacent and unconcerned or...?

Growing up in a small town, I've seen how difficult it can be for LE to do the right thing. We don't want to believe that people we know or knew would do such horrible things. In these cases, it's up to the community to make a statement to LE that they would rather LE take every precaution and fully search every lead, risking stepping on a few toes, rather than risk a criminal getting away with their crime and harming others in their community or other communities down the road. JMO

This comment by Frasier really bothers me:
"They fled the area very quickly” said Frasier. “I doubt very seriously that we probably would have been able to catch them quicker than what we did.”
That's a cop out. No pun intended.

It demonstrates to me that he may be quick to make excuses and may not be likely to accept responsibility for his mistakes. I would have much more respect if he had said, "We did not have any recent murders reported and all procedures were followed in regards to Eschler's call. However, in retrospect and all procedures aside, we could have done a welfare check on the family. It may not have resulted in apprehending the Morris' any sooner, but it's possible that it could have."
Do I have a possible career in Public Relations? :lol!:

Now, I don't have much faith in this guy. 🇳🇴 I pray that he is doing Cory right and there will be justice for Leah this year. If he gets Leah's murder solved, that will probably look great on his "resume" and boost his career so I'm hopeful that gives him the necessary motivation to get this case solved! Fingers Crossed

Gabriel Morris gets TWO CONSECUTIVE LIFE SENTENCES for the murders of his mother, Robin Lynn Anstey and her friend Robert William Kennelly Jr - Page 2 Empty Murder Suspect’s Wife Leaving Virginia for Oregon

Post by Nama Fri Feb 26, 2010 12:10 am

The parents of Jessica Morris, the wife of accused murderer Gabriel Morris, formerly of Blackfoot, say Jessica will be on her way back to the west coast tomorrow.

Jessica's father, Bill Pope, says Jessica will be taken back to Coos County, Oregon where her husband, Gabriel Morris is accused of killing his mother and her boyfriend.

Gabriel Morris had been on the run with his wife and five year-old daughter, Kaleah for more than a week before being caught Monday in Prince William County, Virginia.

Jessica's father believes his daughter is being taken back to Oregon ultimately to testify in the court proceedings against Gabriel.

She will be accompanied by the District Attorney of Coos County, who originally sought to speak with Jessica as a material witness in the murders.

Meanwhile, the Pope's will remain in Virginia to continue their custody battle for their granddaughter, Kaleah.

Bill Pope says they will continue supervised visits with Kaleah until Wednesday when it is believed a decision will be made through a custody hearing.

Pope says he is optimistic he and his wife Rita will be able to gain custody of the girl who has been in foster care since her father's capture on Monday.

"She lived with us for three years out of her life, so I don't see why they wouldn't give her to us," said Pope over the phone Thursday evening.

Pope says his daughter Jessica is upset that Kaleah is in foster care.

"She's not saying much about what happened, but she's very vocal about her daughter not being given over to us yet," said Pope, "I just told her to worry about taking care of the other matters, and getting a good attorney once she gets to Oregon."

Gabriel Morris gets TWO CONSECUTIVE LIFE SENTENCES for the murders of his mother, Robin Lynn Anstey and her friend Robert William Kennelly Jr - Page 2 Empty Popes still trying to get custody of girl

Post by Nama Sat Feb 27, 2010 10:30 pm

It will be another long and heart-wrenching weekend for Bill and Rita Pope as they remain in Virginia awaiting a hearing to gain custody of their four-year-old granddaughter Kalea Morris.
Kalea was placed in foster care Feb. 22 after her father, Gabriel Morris, was arrested on two counts of homicide and her mother, Jessica Morris, was taken into custody on a material witness warrant.
The Popes have been allowed supervised visitation with Kalea for one hour a day throughout the week, but were notified Friday that there would be no visitations over the weekend.
“They won’t let us see Kalea over the weekend because, if it cuts into their weekend, they can’t be bothered with it,” said Rita. “She is just a scared and confused little girl. She is definitely not herself right now. She needs to be with us; she has spent most of her life living with us -- and now is the time she needs us the most. It is just making me crazy that they won’t let us have her now.”
A custody hearing is scheduled for Wednesday in Virginia. The Popes anticipate they will be awarded custody at that time and plan to return to Idaho.
Throughout the week, Bingham County Sheriff’s Office has been working to relay information between Oregon and Virginia and has been keeping in touch with Virginian authorities. Sheriff Dave Johnson said “they have also been “helping the Popes secure the documents they need to get Kalea.”
Jessica arrived in Oregon Friday afternoon with Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier.
“She flew O.K. and she didn’t fight extradition,” said Rita. “That is a step in the right direction.”
Gabriel Morris remains in Virginia. The Popes said “he is going to make things difficult because that’s what he does.”

The man accused of killing his mother and her partner in their Bandon home is beginning the extradition process that could lead him back to answer those charges. Meanwhile, his wife already has returned on a material witness warrant.

Jessica Morris waived extradition and was returned to Coos County late in the afternoon on Friday, Feb. 26, said Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier.

She is at the Coos County Jail, with security set at $1 million. Jessica Morris is set to appear before Judge Martin Stone on Monday, March 1, at 1:30 p.m.

The suspect in this double homicide, Gabriel Morris, has refused to waive extradition from Virginia and a court appearance has been set for him there on March 20.

He is being held in the Prince William County Jail, without the possibility of release, pending resolution of the extradition process.

In a press release, Frasier said that, due to the sometimes lengthy extradition process, he could not say how soon it would be before Gabe Morris is returned to Coos County.

He did cite his "appreciation for the Prince William County Police Department" for their work in the initial capture of Morris, along with their assistance in the following investigation that took place in Virginia.

Gabriel Morris gets TWO CONSECUTIVE LIFE SENTENCES for the murders of his mother, Robin Lynn Anstey and her friend Robert William Kennelly Jr - Page 2 Empty Morris fights extradition to Oregon

After being on the run for three weeks, the wife of murder suspect Gabriel Morris will appear in Coos County court today on a material witness warrant.

Jessica Morris, 33, waived extradition to the area after Prince William County, Va., police arrested the Morrises on Feb. 22. The Idaho woman is scheduled to appear before Coos County Circuit Court Judge Martin Stone at 1:30 p.m. in Coquille. In the meantime, she is being held at the Coos County jail on $1 million bail.

A jail spokesman said it’s common practice for a material witness to be held in custody, if he or she has fled the state in the past. No charges have been filed against her.

Gabriel Morris refused to waive extradition from Virginia. Coos County investigators believe he shot and killed his mother, Robin L. Anstey, and her boyfriend, Robert W. Kennelly Jr., on Feb. 8. He remains at the Prince William County jail and is expected to reappear in court there on March 20.

By that point, Coos County District Attorney R. Paul Frasier hopes to have a special warrant, known as a governor’s warrant, requesting the 33-year-old Morris be extradited back to Coos County, where the killings occurred.

In a press release, the DA said extradition can be a complicated process, which can be repeatedly contested by a suspect. Last week, Frasier spent time in Prince William County trying to move the proceedings along.

“At this point, I have no idea how soon it will be that Mr. Morris is returned to Coos County,” Frasier wrote. “In my experience, I have had only one case in nearly 25 years where a defendant chose to contest extradition after the Governor’s Warrant was issued.”

He noted that extradition does not determine guilt.

“The issue is whether he should be returned to Oregon,” Frasier explained.

Gabriel Morris gets TWO CONSECUTIVE LIFE SENTENCES for the murders of his mother, Robin Lynn Anstey and her friend Robert William Kennelly Jr - Page 2 Empty DA didn't connect two cases

Post by Nama Mon Mar 01, 2010 4:06 pm

Coos County’s district attorney has known Fred Eschler for years, but when Eschler called with a tale of terrorists and an undercover federal agent visiting his home, the DA didn’t believe him.

“It’s kind of hard to swallow,” R. Paul Frasier recalled.

Frasier didn’t know at the time that the Coos County Sheriff’s Office was looking for a missing Bandon woman. And neither the sheriff’s office nor the DA knew the two seemingly unconnected incidents would become part of murder case and cross-country manhunt.

If they had known, authorities might have gotten a quicker start in investigating the deaths of Robin L. Anstey and Robert W. Kennelly Jr., and the hunt for suspect Gabriel Morris.

Eschler, a Coquille school board member, told a DA’s office staff member that the unnamed visitor told him he had played a part in two Bandon homicides.

At the time Eschler called on Feb. 9, the DA said he was meeting with investigators in an unrelated murder case and couldn’t take the call. Instead, through a message relayed from a staff member, Frasier thought Eschler wanted to know if there had been any unsolved homicides in Bandon. He knew of none.

Plus, homeland security isn’t Frasier’s bailiwick.

So, the DA asked staff members to tell Eschler to call the FBI.

“Mr. Eschler informed my staff that he was very concerned about this individual,” Frasier said in an affidavit. “He also told my staff that he provided this person with a gun and a vehicle.”

It wasn’t until the following day that a Coos County Sheriff’s deputy found the bodies of Anstey, 62, and Kennelly, 49, along with gun shell casings, at Kennelly’s home near Bandon.

Four days before the Morrises visited Eschler, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office had begun searching for Jessica Morris.

On Feb. 5, employees at the Women’s Resource & Safety Center called the Coos County Sheriff’s Office after not hearing from Jessica Morris for several days. Executive Director Judy Moody said the woman had been organizing a fundraiser for the organization when she suddenly seemed to disappear.

At that point, Sgt. Dave Hermann went to Bandon Bookkeeping, where Morris had worked for about two months. Her boss said she received a peculiar message from the woman on Jan. 28, saying she was leaving town to resolve financial issues, Hermann said.

Without an exact address, Hermann began a neighborhood survey. He went door-to-door along state Highway 42 between mileposts 4 and 6 in Bandon. That’s where co-workers thought she lived. Her phone had been turned off.

On Feb. 6, two days before the killings, Hermann stood in Robert Kennelly’s driveway looking for Morris. Nobody was home, so he checked the plates for each car in the driveway. He went back to the Sheriff’s Office and reported Jessica Morris and her 4-year-old daughter, Kalea, as missing and endangered.

“I thought, ‘No wonder she didn’t show up. She’s moving,’” Hermann said. “Everything in the house looked boxed up.”

Hermann planned to go back to the house the following week, but didn’t make it there before the murders were discovered on Feb. 10. If he had, Hermann said he would have tripped on the bodies of Kennelly and Jessica Morris’s mother-in-law, Robin Lynn Anstey, 62. But he would not have found Jessica Morris.

The district attorney has been acquainted with Eschler and his wife, Laura, since 1993 or 1994. The two men attend the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Coquille Ward. Frasier said Gabriel Morris also attended the church on occasion, and had dated one of Eschler’s daughters. Frasier’s 18-year-old son, Robert Frasier, died in a car accident with Eschler’s daughter, Elizabeth Eschler, 17, in 1999. Frasier said the two were dating.

Despite the connection between the Frasiers, the Eschlers and the Morrises, the DA said he does not see a conflict of interest. He explained Coos County is a small community where he occasionally has to prosecute cases involving acquaintances. He has recused himself in the past, including the prosecution of one of his wife’s co-workers.

“This case is nowhere near that level of contact,” Frasier said. “I do not believe that my impartiality is going to be affected in any way in this case.”

The DA noted that before the double homicide case broke, he hadn’t seen Gabriel Morris in 10 or 11 years.

Also, he has no intention of charging the Eschlers, unless he learns that the couple knew Morris had actually killed two people. Fred Eschler said during a police interview that a terrorist had killed two people and Morris had shot a terrorist.

Of course it sounded like a crazy story, but it's not something you just blow off! I think I said it before, but I'm gonna say it again. I'm really not liking this Frasier guy. Hopefully, this is just a learning curve for him and he'll be better for it, but I just don't get that feeling.

If that's not reflective to being too close to the situation or a conflict of interest, I don't know what is. Maybe it's just idocracy. Sorry If I'm offending anyone, I just really distrust this guy.

If someone in LE has friends/acquaintances that attend the same church and said persons are involved in a crime then the person in LE has no business being involved in the case. It IS a conflict of interest. Juries are brought in from other counties or trials moved to other counties. That's what needs to done here. Get this case, or two cases, tried as far away from the DA and the church, that they all belong to, as possible. I'm glad that this church connection came out.

Gabriel Morris gets TWO CONSECUTIVE LIFE SENTENCES for the murders of his mother, Robin Lynn Anstey and her friend Robert William Kennelly Jr - Page 2 Empty Jessica Morris charged with hindering prosecution, a felony.

Post by Nama Mon Mar 01, 2010 9:55 pm

Coos County prosecutors Monday charged Jessica Morris with impeding their ability to catch her husband.

Morris’ husband, Gabriel, is accused of two counts of aggravated murder in the shooting deaths of his mother and her boyfriend. The couple fled Oregon last month with their 4-year-old daughter, Kalea, prompting a nationwide manhunt that landed them on America’s Most Wanted.

Authorities caught up with the family last Monday in Virginia, where they’d been staying with acquaintances Gabriel Morris met in an online role-playing game.

Jessica Morris, 33, decided to waive extradition, so she was returned here Friday. Gabriel Morris is fighting extradition, which means it could be several months until he comes back to Oregon.

Jessica Morris was arrested as a material witness and held on a $1 million bond. Monday, Coos County Prosecutor Paul Frasier charged her with hindering prosecution, a felony.

She will face a grand jury on Wednesday, where Frasier will seek a formal indictment after calling several witnesses and presenting evidence that she helped her husband flee despite knowing he killed Robin Anstey and Robert William Kennelly Jr.

If indicted, she faces arraignment the following day, at which time she will enter a plea.

Gabriel Morris gets TWO CONSECUTIVE LIFE SENTENCES for the murders of his mother, Robin Lynn Anstey and her friend Robert William Kennelly Jr - Page 2 Empty Role-playing game played a part in murder suspects getaway

Now this is just weird!

A Coos County Grand Jury is expected to begin hearing the District Attorney's case against Gabriel Morris on Wednesday, March 3rd, even as the suspect remains in custody in Virginia, fighting extradition.

The Morris' and their 4-year-old daughter were found in Virginia last week, staying with a married couple that Gabe Morris had come to know over the past few months, through an online game.

"Mr. Morris was somehow able to get Kelly Love's phone number through communicating through this online game," said Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier, "the day after Valentine's day, (they) met at a restaurant and then the invitation was extended for them to come and stay."

Prior to their arrest in Virginia, the family had last been seen in Mesa, Arizona on February 10th. Frasier says investigators are trying to pin down their movements in between those days.

"You know, they could have been anywhere, and that's one of the things we want to track down," says Frasier, "you know, in the trunk of the car we found a Detroit phone book. Now, were they in Detroit? I don't know."

Jessica Morris is due back in a Coos County Courtroom on Thursday morning, March 4th. Gabe Morris remains in custody in Prince William County, Virginia, and it is not yet known when he could be brought back to Coos County to face charges.

Gabriel Morris gets TWO CONSECUTIVE LIFE SENTENCES for the murders of his mother, Robin Lynn Anstey and her friend Robert William Kennelly Jr - Page 2 Empty Charge targets Jessica Morris

Post by Nama Tue Mar 02, 2010 9:55 pm

Jessica Morris cried quietly in Coos County court Monday, as Judge Richard Barron told her she could face five years in prison if convicted of helping her husband flee the area following a double homicide.

The 33-year-old faces one charge of hindering prosecution.

'She helped him get away," Coos District Attorney R. Paul Frasier contended.

During Jessica Morris' six-minute hearing, the slender woman in an orange jail jumpsuit listened as the DA told the judge that he'll ask a grand jury on Wednesday to issue an indictment against her. He'll also ask jurors to determine if she is, in fact, a material witness, and to secure an indictment against her husband, murder suspect Gabriel Morris.

If the grand jury agrees, she will be arraigned at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Jessica Morris is believed to be a material witness in the deaths of her husband's mother, Robin L. Anstey, and Robert W. Kennelly Jr. on Feb. 8 in Bandon. Coquille resident Fred Eschler said he last saw Jessica Morris driving on the night of Feb. 8, while her husband and 4-year-old daughter hid in the back seat of the Ford Taurus that Eschler had loaned to them.

Two days later, a deputy found the bodies at Kennelly's Bandon-area home.

Police in Prince William County, Va., apprehended the couple last week. Gabriel Morris remains in jail in Virginia. He's contested extradition.

Frasier said he chose to charge Jessica Morris because he believes she provided aid to her husband to avoid detection, following the deaths of Anstey and her boyfriend.

Also, at the court proceeding, Barron temporarily assigned public defender John Meynink to the case, and added $25,000 to Jessica Morris' $1 million bail to cover the hindering prosecution charge. The DA said he considers Morris to be a flight risk, although being a material witness is not a criminal offense.

'I've got to keep her here. ... She has no ties to this community at this point," Frasier said. 'I need some substantial security to make sure she shows up if she were able to post bail."

The DA went to Virginia last week, following the Morrises' capture, to help in several searches, including that of the Ford Taurus, and the home of Kelly Love and Scott Snyder. The Morrises had been staying at Love and Snyder's home, and had been driving from the residence in the Taurus and a Ford Explorer when officers arrested them. Frasier said officers did find a firearm during the search but could not say if it had been used as a murder weapon. The couples knew each other through an interactive fantasy online game, called 'Perfect World." According to the Perfect World Entertainment Web site, Perfect World is a multiplayer online role-playing game in an imaginary world.

After the Morrises left Coos County, Frasier contends they met with Love in a restaurant in Virginia on or around Feb. 15 and then stayed at her home. Another person living there, whom he could not identify, later reported the Morrises to police.

The Morrises' young daughter, Kalea, remains in the custody of Child Protective Services in Virginia. Frasier said her grandparents, Bill and Rita Pope, have petitioned for custody of the child.

Although I can't for the life of me figure out why the Eschler's believed him.

I would like to think that Jessica was just a bi stander in all of this and was only staying with him in fear that he would harm her and their daughter. Maybe he threatened to harm her family if she was to ever escape him? IDK..

Sounds to me like Frasier is trying to pin a charge on her to assure his star material witness, Jessica, won't bolt. I don't see any other reason given that would indicate charging her for aiding her husband in fleeing after the homicides. JMO.

Kaleah Morris, the 5-year-old daughter of the former Blackfoot couple tracked down in Virginia in connection with a double murder in Oregon, is coming back to Blackfoot.

Kaleah's grandparents Bill and Rita Pope confirm Kaleah is on her way back to Blackfoot with them.

The Pope's have been trying to gain custody of Kaleah since their daughter Jessica and her husband, Gabriel were captured by police in Virginia in connection with the death of Gabriel's mother and her boyfriend.

The Morris's had been on the run since early February.

Jessica has already appeared in court in Oregon after being arrested on a material witness warrant, and faces charges of felony hindering of prosecution.

Gabriel is still in Virginia fighting extradition.

"(Kaleah) is doing really well and is excited to come home with us, and we're excited to have her back," said Bill Pope over the phone Wednesday.

The family expects to be back in Blackfoot Thursday night.

Once Gabriel Morris is brought back to Oregon from Virginia, Jessica Morris may be asked to testify against her husband.

But, married couples have certain legal rights. Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier says under the marital privilege law, Jessica is not required to testify against Gabriel. But if she wishes to, Gabriel can't prevent her from testifying.

Gabriel is also protected under the law; Jessica cannot tell the court about any private conversations they've had, since they're considered confidential communications between married couples.

“If the wife starts talking [in court] about a confidential communication, the defense attorney would object, claiming it’s privileged. The judge would sustain the objection and the jury would never hear the testimony," explained Frasier.

But the law does not prohibit Jessica from talking about what she might have seen.

If she is convicted of the crime of hindering prosecution, Jessica Morris could face five years in prison.

Gabriel Morris was formally charged with two counts of aggravated murder Wednesday after a grand jury met to hear testimony about the case.

Prosecutors say Morris killed his mother, Robin Lynn Anstey, and her partner, Robert William Kennelly, Jr., in February in their Bandon home.

The Coos County District Attorney says the grand jury heard testimony from 13 witnesses before returning the indictment against Morris. A grand jury meets to decide if there is enough cause to charge somebody with a crime, but they do not determine guilt.

Morris is still in a Virginia jail where he was arrested last week. He is being held without bond as he fights efforts to send him back to Oregon to stand trial.

The grand jury also returned an indictment charging Morris’ wife Jessica Morris with hindering the prosecution of the case. She is in the Coos County Jail and will return to court Thursday morning.

Investigators believe Anstey and Kennelly were killed February 8, but their bodies weren’t found until two days later.

Gabriel and Jessica Morris were arrested two weeks later after they had fled to Virginia. Police were tipped off after a man they were staying with became suspicious, looked up Gabriel Morris on the Internet, and then called police.

The couple’s 4-year-old daughter Kalea was with them, and is now with child protective services in Virginia.

Gabriel Morris gets TWO CONSECUTIVE LIFE SENTENCES for the murders of his mother, Robin Lynn Anstey and her friend Robert William Kennelly Jr - Page 2 Empty Finally!

Bill and Rita Pope have been reunited with their granddaughter and are heading home. The days have been long for the Pope’s since police arrived on their doorstep Feb. 10 informing them that their daughter, Jessica, and granddaughter, Kalea were believed to be with Gabriel Morris who was wanted in connection to a double homicide in Oregon.
“Getting Kalea today is almost as good as the day she was born,” said Rita. “What she really needs now is stability and lots of love.”
The Popes arrived in Virginia less than 24 hours after the Morris family was taken into custody in Virginia. They have spent the past nine days in a Virginia hotel cooperating with authorities in an effort to gain custody of their granddaughter and return to Blackfoot. Rita said the hearing only lasted about “a minute and a half.”
“Our son has been to our home and fixed up a bedroom for Kalea,” said Rita. “She doesn’t have anything. No clothes, no coat -- we had to go buy her a jacket and sweatshirt because it’s cold here. She doesn’t have a single belonging with her.”
Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier said the Grand Jury in Oregon returned an indictment charging Jessica with hindering prosecution. She will appear before Judge Richard Barron at 8:30 a.m. today.
Frasier also said the Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Gabriel Morris with “two counts of aggravated murder. Gabriel remains in Virginia where he is being held without bond pending resolution of our request to extradite him to the State of Oregon to stand trial.”

Bill and Rita Pope are enjoying every minute they get to have with their granddaughter Kalea. After spending 10 days in foster care, a judge in Virginia released Kalea to her grandparents Wednesday.
