12 yr old Brittany Mae Smith has found in the San Francisco / Jeff Easley pleads no contest and will spend the rest of his life in prison for the murder of Brittany's mother, Tina Smith
(CNN) -- After finding her mother dead inside their home, police issued an Amber Alert for a 12-year-old Virginia girl who they believe has been kidnapped.
Brittany Mae Smith was last seen "several days ago," according to a Roanoke County statement issued Monday. Police launched a search for Jeffrey Scott Easley, 32, described by authorities as a friend of the dead mother.
"Police have said that the young lady is in extreme danger," said Teresa Hamilton Hall, public information director for Roanoke County.
Roanoke County police went to a Salem, Virginia, residence around 9:30 a.m. Monday after being contacted by concerned co-workers of Tina Smith, the girl's mother. They found the 41-year-old woman's body inside, and police said they were investigating the death as a possible homicide.
Police soon got information that Brittany Smith's whereabouts were unknown, leading them to issue the statewide alert.
"We found out pretty quickly that (Brittany) had not shown up for school. Nobody seemed to know where she was. We're concerned that her disappearance is going to be, at least a good possibility, it has something to do with the homicide," Roanoke County police Lt. Chuck Mason said, according to CNN affiliate WSET of Lynchburg, Virginia.
Virginia's Amber Alert website noted early Monday evening that Easley's car, a 2000 red Chevrolet SUV, has been found. But authorities are still looking for Tina Smith's vehicle, a silver 2005 Dodge Neon four-door sedan with Virginia license plates.
Easley, a 265-pound white male, is 5 feet, 11 inches tall, has brown hair and hazel eyes, the Amber Alert says.
Brittany Smith is 5 feet tall, weighs 100 pounds, and has straight brown hair and brown eyes.
Hall said authorities don't yet have a specific search area, as they are uncertain which direction Easley might be heading or how far he might have gotten. They have asked anyone with information to call 911 or Roanoke County police at 540-777-8641.

Missing Teen and Mother Previously Featured on ABC 13
An Amber Alert remains in effect for 12-year-old Brittany Mae Smith after her mother, Tina Smith, was found dead in their Roanoke County home.
If the names Tina and Brittany Smith sound familiar to you, it's because ABC 13 did a story with them a year and a half ago about Tina's son, Tyler.
He died while playing the fainting game a game where those who take part suffocate themselves on purpose to get a "high."
Tina and her daughter, Brittany, were trying to raise awareness about this game.
This is from the interview we did with them in September of last year.
"He's gone and I know that I wont be able to see him for awhile," said Brittany Smith.
"It'll prevent another mom from going through this, another life being lost, another sister crying out in her sleep for her brother, that's the whole purpose of Tyler's cause," said Tina Smith.

We were posting pics of the two of them at the same time. :lol!: I deleted my post and added just my pic of Brittany to your post since it was a different one than you had posted.
I doesn't look good. I wonder what this guys background is? Brittany doesn't look like your typical 12 yr old. She looks much older than 12.

This is so sad! The Mom who was found dead inside of the home had lost her son a year ago, Brittany had lost her brother and the Dad (I think they are divorced) lost them all, that is until and if Brittany is found. OMG, I just could not imagine!
This guy who (allegedly) took Brittany is at least two days ahead of LE in this.

I agree - she does seem older than 12. I don't know about this guy's background, but he looks rather scary!! The fact that her mother was murdered (most likely by him), is also another cause for alarm.

She was 41. He was 32.
They flirted over the Internet. He sent online kisses and declared her "hot." She thanked him for his patience with her.
Jeff Easley moved into Tina Smith's house in Roanoke County, just across Salem's western border, a few months ago, a neighbor said.
Their love story dissolved Monday with a terrible discovery. A co-worker found Tina Smith slain in her home after she failed to show up at her nursing home job for two days. Her 12-year-old daughter, Brittany Mae Smith, was gone, presumed abducted by Easley and "in extreme danger," according to a state police Amber Alert.
Mother and daughter were last seen alive on Friday, police said.
Co-workers at Richfield Retirement Community in Salem first called police to the two-story house on Fort Lewis Circle, a quiet cul-de-sac, on Sunday night after Smith failed to show up for work, said Roanoke County police Lt. Chuck Mason.
Officers knocked on the door, but got no answer. There were no cars in the driveway, and the officers saw no reason to force their way inside, Mason said.
"At the time, there wasn't anything suspicious," he said.
About 9:30 a.m. Monday, after Smith failed to show up at work again, a co-worker with a house key walked in and found Smith's body, Mason said. Police wouldn't say how she died.
Authorities issued a national Amber Alert for Brittany Smith and her description was broadcast frequently on police radios throughout Southwest Virginia. The frantic search included a false sighting Monday night of a girl walking along Interstate 81 in Botetourt County. The case was featured on the HLN television crime show Nancy Grace.
Roanoke County police located Easley's red 2000 Chevrolet SUV. Missing still was Smith's car, a silver 2005 Dodge Neon sedan, Virginia tag XKF-2365.
"We are all wondering, 'What in the world is going to happen to Brittany?' " said Fiona Walden, 40, who lives in Tina Smith's hometown of South Boston, near the North Carolina border.
Smith and Brittany were "as close as a mother can be to a daughter," Walden said. "Her daughter was her world. Everything she did was for her daughter."
Mason said police aren't calling Easley a suspect in Tina Smith's homicide. The Amber Alert flatly declares him Brittany Smith's abductor.
Tina Smith was a registered nurse and had worked at the retirement home four years, said Robert Rector, president of Richfield Retirement Community.
"The news was very devastating to our staff," Rector said.
Fort Lewis Circle neighbors said they would see Smith coming and going in scrubs.
One neighbor said she'd seen Easley with Brittany, and it made her uneasy.
"This guy gives me the creeps," said Roxann Pille. "Just the way he touches her, just the way he looks at her, gives me a very uneasy feeling."
Easley's MySpace page uses the nickname Jeffro and pictures him with Brittany. Both are grinning broadly.
Brittany's MySpace page lists her age as 18. Her MySpace and Facebook pages use the last name Easley.
Brittany is a seventh-grader at Glenvar Middle School. The school is bringing in counselors to talk to students today, Roanoke County schools spokesman Chuck Lionberger said.
On her MySpace page, Tina Smith listed Easley among her heroes "for having so much patience & for loving me anyway."
She devoted some of her online postings to her 16-year-old son, William Tyler Matherly. He accidentally died in Johnson City, Tenn., in August 2009 while playing the "choking game," in which people strangle themselves, cutting off oxygen and producing a feeling of euphoria.
Smith's weekly postings on her son's Facebook memorial page documented her grief and advocated awareness of self-asphyxiation.
"I keep saying I am going to stop counting the time since you were here physically and start looking forward to the time we are together as a family again, but I can't help it, you know how I am about numbers," she wrote in January.
She also wrote about skydiving in honor of Matherly's adventurous spirit.
"You taught me life is too short," she wrote.
Walden, Tina Smith's friend, said the teen's death brought mother and daughter closer.
"Their family has seen so much tragedy already," Walden said. "This is just horrible."

Plain and simple, women need to keep their low life boyfriends away from their children. Meet them at a restaurant or a motel by yourself , but don't bring these dangerous men into your homes. How many stories like this does it take to wake these mothers up?

This doesn't sound good at all! It almost sounds like they had some type of inappropriate relationship for some time. I hope that this girl is not involved in her mother's death!

BJ, thanks for posting the link to Tina's son's memorial page on Facebook. I noticed this was Tina Smith's last posting on that page (it was posted on November 30th) - so very sad!!
"Tyler, 69 weeks today, this year I don't have the shock to buffer the holiday's without you. You know how much I adore Christmas, the season and the spirit. Last year we adopted the family and supplied them with a buffet of games and toys, as well as food. This year I hope to nourish the minds of a youth group at a local church. My gift to you is for your death to help others to live. Give me strength to deliver your message. Your giving spirit will live on as long as I am alive Ty! I miss you so much. You shared your second Thanksgiving in heaven, I wonder what you experience everyday, do you still watch us cry? I wore our necklace this year for Thanksgiving, You will always hold the other half of my heart son, I love you much, Mom"

Does she have her shirt pulled up in that picture? VERY inappropriate for a 12 year old! In fact, I don't think 12 year olds are even ALLOWED to have their own page on My Space or Facebook!!

Yup, her shirt is pulled up. And did you notice her name on her page? "brittany easleys what they call".
I'm wondering if she had a crush on this guy and he took advantage of that. I don't think this is going to have a happy ending.

This sleaze probably use Brittany's mother to get into the home and get to the girl...I'll bet he had already seen her online and manipulated the mother to get to Brittany...These single mothers have GOT TO be on the defensive when it comes to their children!!

Thanks for all the posts on this thread. I saw a small segment on NG. The heavy eye liner, the picture with her shirt up all stuff 12 yr old girls should not be wearing or doing. She looks much older than 12 yrs old. I am curious as to why her Mother allowed her to have facebook and myspace pages? Mom's need to wake up. Kids need to be kids and Parents need to pay attention to everything their kids are doing. It is just sickening that she used her Mother boyfriends last name. It tells a story for sure.

LM. I am amazed at what these young girls look like today. The clothing and heavy makeup that they wear. The parents are buying this for them and allowing them look like they do.
I think more is going to come out about this story and I don't think it is going to be good.

Re: 12 yr old Brittany Mae Smith has found in the San Francisco / Jeff Easley pleads no contest and will spend the rest of his life in prison for the murder of Brittany's mother, Tina Smith
Community waits, holds hope as search continues for missing girl
As the massive search continued Tuesday for missing 12-year-old Brittany Mae Smith of Salem, and an autopsy was being conducted on her mother, Tina Louise Dyer Smith, relatives and friends in South Boston prayed fervently for the young girl’s safe return and questioned whether this tragic turn of events somehow could have been prevented.
Roanoke County Police found the body of the 41-year-old former Halifax County resident Monday when they were called to her Fort Lewis Circle home in Salem.
While at the scene, police obtained information indicating Smith’s 12-year-old daughter was missing.
An Amber Alert was issued Monday afternoon for the young girl who had called South Boston home up until four years ago prior to her parents’ divorce.
Her father, Benjamin H. Smith, is a South Boston Police officer.
The series of tragic events have left the community reeling as relatives and friends of the family anxiously await any word of Brittany’s whereabouts.
The victim’s mother and missing girl’s grandmother, Liz Dyer of South Boston, said Tuesday she continues to wait for any information on her granddaughter’s safety.
“Police have not told us anything,” she said speaking from her Eastover Drive home.
“We know she was beaten, and they’re doing an autopsy,” she said of speaking her late daughter, Tina.
Dyer said she only met Brittany’s suspected abductor, Jeffrey Scott Easley, one time.
But she was quick to add, “We didn’t like what we saw.”
The worried grandmother said she had been unaware Easley was living with her daughter and granddaughter until two weeks ago when they came home for Thanksgiving.
“I saw him for the first time Thanksgiving,” and Dyer said what the family saw that day concerned members enough to prompt them to contact Social Services.
Dyer’s sister, who asked not to be identified, said she hosted the family’s Thanksgiving gathering attended by Tina, Brittany and Easley at her home in the county.
“He kept touching her (Brittany’s) hair, caressing her, touching her hand and consuming her with his eyes,” she said. “Normally I would have said something then and there, but the house was full of people.”
The aunt, who was contacted by Headline News’ Nancy Grace for her Monday night program on the missing girl, explained several days after the Thanksgiving dinner she called her niece (Tina) in Salem to express her concerns.
“I called Tina, and she said ‘he’s leaving right away.’ I told her to call me when he left. After she said he was leaving, I thought things were ok,” the aunt continued.
Social Services contacted
The concerned relative said she attempted to report her concerns to Social Services in Halifax County because “she didn’t know where to start.”
She also dialed an 800 number for child abuse to provide information about her concerns.
“The lady said she would relay the information to Salem Social Services but told me it would be better if I called them directly. I called Salem Social Services and gave them this information Friday, but by that time it was too late,” she said.
The last time the aunt said she talked with Tina was the week after Thanksgiving on either Monday or Tuesday.
“She was to call me when he left, but she never called,” she reiterated.
Although family members said they were unclear how Smith and Easley met, authorities confirmed Tuesday it was through an online Internet relationship.
The aunt described Brittany as a child who always has loved attention.
“And he was paying her a lot of attention,” she said.
“Poor Tina lived in a different world than the rest of us. She always thought everyone was good, and everything would be ok,” her aunt said. “You can look at what she wrote on Facebook and see that it sounds like it came out of a storybook or fairytale.”
When asked about information reported on the Nancy Grace program Monday night concerning Brittany’s name change on Facebook from Brittany Smith to Brittany Easley, the aunt said, “I can explain that. She and her friends would change their names to their best friends names.”
The aunt said prior to changing her last name on Facebook to Easley, she had changed it to Conner or some other name.
Meanwhile, Brittany’s father traveled to the Roanoke Police Station on Monday to assist in the investigation before returning home Monday evening, the aunt said.
Church family
The family’s pastor, the Rev. John Eure of Ash Avenue Baptist Church, also traveled to Roanoke to be with Officer Smith and family members including Tina’s sister, Tracey White of South Boston.
Prior to the divorce, Tina and her husband were members of Ash Avenue Baptist Church, and Eure said he later had the privilege of baptizing Brittany.
“Bennie had shared custody, and Brittany always came with him to church when she was with him,” he said.
Eure, who has served as pastor at Ash Avenue Baptist Church for the past 10 years, said Brittany was 3 “and running all over the place when I first came here.”
The last time he saw her was earlier this fall when she came with her father to church.
“With her living in Roanoke, I didn’t have as much contact, but we were always glad to see her.”
Eure, who had taken a vacation day Monday, said he was in between Danville and Martinsville shopping when he got the call from Brittany’s father about the Amber Alert.
“It was just a shocker. He said he had gotten some information, and it wasn’t very good,” the pastor said.
“It was amazing how I was positioned to get to Roanoke. God had worked that out, and I was glad I could be there for the family, but I hated the circumstances,” he said.
“We watched that child grow up in church, and she’s the church’s child too. We hope by bearing some of this family’s pain, we can help ease some of their pain,” Eure said adding, “Benny has a strong faith.”
A shaken community
Brittany’s former babysitter, Linda Satterfield of South Boston, who also attends Ash Avenue Baptist Church, said this ordeal “has really gotten to me.
“I kept her during her early school years when she was in the third and fourth grade and during the summer. I would get her off the school bus,” Satterfield said. “She’s one of my children, and it’s really hard.”
She said she has maintained her relationship with the family and enjoys seeing Brittany when she comes to church with her father.
“She’s a beautiful girl, a loving, caring child,” Satterfield said, adding that she often talked with Brittany’s mom even after she and her daughter moved to Salem.
“I pray to God Brittany can find a way to get away and call and get help. It’s awful for a child to go through that. I hope they find her soon,” her former babysitter said.
Another friend of the family, Buddy Wilborn of South Boston, said he grew up in the same community with Tina and Bennie and recently “had bumped into” Tina at Food Lion in South Boston.
“It was the first time in several years I had seen her to speak to her,” he said.
“We used to go to church together, we talked about that and about her job. She was here for a Thanksgiving get-together,” Wilborn recalled.
“She told me she and Brittany were going to church in Roanoke and that she was still involved in church. We talked about Ash Avenue (church) some.
“It was really a strange coincidence. We had a good 15 to 20 minute conversation and talked about old times,” Wilborn said describing his old friend as “a really nice and polite person ever since I’ve known her.”
A prayer vigil was held Tuesday evening at Ash Avenue Baptist Church with members of the community gathering to pray for the young girl’s safe return and for the family as they struggle to cope with the loss of Brittany’s mother, Tina.
Efforts to contact Tina’s sister, Tracey White, and her brother, Donny Dyer, were unsuccessful Tuesday.

Re: 12 yr old Brittany Mae Smith has found in the San Francisco / Jeff Easley pleads no contest and will spend the rest of his life in prison for the murder of Brittany's mother, Tina Smith
Surveillance shows suspect, girl shopping Friday at Salem Walmart
Roanoke County, state and federal law enforcement are pursuing more than 200 tips generated in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of a 12-year-old Roanoke County girl, Brittany Mae Smith, and a 32-year-old Roanoke County man, Jeffrey Scott Easley, according to Teresa Hamilton Hall, Roanoke County Police Department spokesperson.
Roanoke County Police have notified law enforcement nationwide on this case with a “Be On the Lookout” bulletin featuring the descriptions of Smith, Easley and the vehicle in which they may be traveling.
Brittany Smith, who is the subject of a statewide Amber Alert, and her deceased mother have local ties, said Hall.
Roanoke County Police found the body of 41-year-old Tina Dyer Smith Monday morning after they were called to her Fort Lewis Circle home in Salem, Hall said. While at the scene, police obtained information indicating that a female child was missing from the home.
Virginia State Police issued an Amber Alert Monday afternoon for 12-year-old Brittany Mae Smith. She is described as five feet tall, weighing 100 pounds, with straight brown hair and brown eyes. She is a seventh-grader at Glenvar Middle School.
Smith is the daughter of South Boston Police Officer Benjamin H. Smith, said Hall. He and Tina Smith were divorced, and Officer Smith is cooperating with authorities, Hall added.
Tina Smith was a Halifax County native who moved with her daughter to the Salem area several years ago.
Police said Tina and Brittany Smith were last seen together leaving their Salem home sometime midmorning on Friday.
Roanoke County Police are not saying how or when Tina Smith died, but they are treating it as a homicide after the first phase of the autopsy was completed Tuesday.
Tina Smith’s co-workers contacted police Monday morning after the woman failed to show up for work at Richfield Retirement Community Sunday and then again Monday, Hall said.
State Police said Brittany Mae Smith is believed to be in extreme danger. The child is likely with Easley, a white male, 5’11” tall, weighing 265 pounds, with brown hair, hazel eyes and possibly a goatee, said Roanoke County Police Chief Ray Lavinder. He has a tattoo on his right forearm and also a star tattoo on each of his calves, the chief added.
Easley and Tina Smith met online this summer and developed a relationship, said Lavinder during a news conference Tuesday.
Easley moved in with Tina and Brittany Smith in October and was still in the home last Friday, Lavinder said. Easley works for a landscaping company and was last seen in the southeast Roanoke area Friday evening, he added.
During a second news conference Tuesday afternoon, Lavinder said Brittany Smith and Easley were seen in the Salem Walmart store Friday night. The chief said police have a surveillance of the two shopping in the store between 8 and 8:30 p.m.
Lavinder said Easley used Tina Smith’s credit card to purchase merchandise at Walmart, and as a result Salem Police have issued warrants for Easley for credit card fraud and credit card larceny.
Chief Lavinder said Easley has family in eastern North Carolina and in northeastern Alabama.
The man’s mother, Sallie Martin, who lives in Franklin County, made a plea during the second press conference to her son to contact her or police, said Hall. Martin urged Easley to take Brittany to a safe place and return her or call 911, the spokesperson said. Martin also told her son she loves him, and they would “work this thing out.”
The Virginia State Medical Examiner performed an autopsy Tuesday on the body of Tina Smith, but no details had been released at press time.
Brittany Smith and Easley may be traveling in Tina Smith’s vehicle, a silver 2005 Dodge Neon Virginia license XKF-2365, the spokesperson said.
Officers were looking earlier Monday for the red Chevrolet Blazer, Virginia tag XPR-4366, that belonged to Easley, but they located the SUV that afternoon, Hall added.
Chief Lavinder issued a plea to Brittany’s friends to contact the police department if they have any information about Brittany or her whereabouts.
Authorities said they hope Friday night shoppers in the Salem Walmart may have seen Brittany Smith with Easley and can provide more information.
Roanoke County Police are being assisted by the Virginia State Police, Federal Bureau of Investigation, City of Salem Police Department and U.S. Marshal’s Service.
Anyone with information about this case should contact the Roanoke County Police Department at 540-777-8641 or the Virginia State Police at 800-822-4453.

Jeffrey Easley's mother today tearfully pleaded with him to release 12-year-old Brittany Smith and "come home."
"I was worried from what I know about you and Brittany," Sallie Martin, of Franklin County, said during a news conference with Roanoke County police. "I just want you to come home and I want you to be safe ... We'll help you work this out. I love you."
Arrest warrants were issued today for Easley, the online boyfriend wanted in the abduction of 12-year-old Brittany Smith from her Roanoke County home, after he and the girl were spotted shopping in the Salem Walmart Friday night with the girl's slain mother's credit card, police said.
Easley, 32, was charged by Salem police with credit card fraud and larceny. A Walmart video shows him shopping with Brittany for "several items," Roanoke County police Chief Ray Lavinder said today at a news conference.
Brittany was discovered missing on Monday when police found the body of her mother, nurse Tina Smith, 41, in the Roanoke County home they shared with Easley since October.
"We still believe she's in danger and we're very concerned," Lavinder said of the girl.
Lavinder said Smith's death was homicide, but wouldn't say what killed her.
"We have not established a suspect" in the killing "at this point," Lavinder said.
More than 200 tips have flooded police in the nationwide hunt, Lavinder said. None of the tipsters have sighted the couple together since the Walmart video Friday night.
Tina Smith, a 41-year-old nurse at a Salem retirement community, was found dead in her home on Fort Lewis Circle on Monday.
Brittany, a Glenvar Middle School seventh-grader, was gone. Police believe Easley abducted Brittany and may be driving Tina Smith's 2005 silver Dodge Neon.

Walmart video shows wanted man and missing 12-year-old Brittany Smith shopping Friday night

I bet her 12 yr old friends know something and they're not talking yet. 12 yr olds tell each other everything. I'm suspecting, after seeing the pic of Jeff and Brittany in Walmart, that she isn't with him against her will. JMHO.Lavinder appealed to Brittany's friends to help find her.

It's good to know that she is still alive (as of Friday), but the pressure (of getting caught) may be getting to Easley. I sure hope he doesn't end up killing her (like he most likely did to her mother)!
I am wondering what they bought at Walmart? If you look closely at the enlarged surveillance photo (posted above) it looks like a large blue toolbox. I don't know if it has any significance, but it makes me curious!

Brittany Smith called her friend a few months ago, scared.
Brittany Smith called her friend a few months ago, scared. The 12-year-old was afraid her mother's live-in boyfriend "would come over and take her away and hurt her mom," the friend, Rebecca Kilian, said Tuesday.
Brittany asked Rebecca, 13, to stay on the phone with her until her mom got home.
"She told me not to call the police," Rebecca said.
Brittany's mother, Tina Smith, was worried, too. On Thursday, the 41-year-old Roanoke County nurse posted this on her Facebook profile:
"If I should die before I wake God bless my friends. May I be remembered for my good heart and hopeless romantic ways."
And on Friday, the last day she was seen alive, Tina Smith posted this: "God please protect us from the evils of this world."
As the nationwide hunt for 12-year-old Brittany Smith entered its second day, police sorted through more than 200 tips and issued an arrest warrant for the mother's boyfriend, Jeffrey Easley, 32, whom they suspect of abducting Brittany. Dozens gathered for a candlelight vigil. And Easley's mother appeared at a news conference, tearfully pleading with her son to keep the girl safe and "come home."
Brittany, a seventh- grader at Glenvar Middle School, turned up missing Monday morning after her mother's Richfield Retirement Community co-workers found Tina Smith slain in her home. Police wouldn't say how or when Smith died, and didn't name a suspect.
They believe Easley abducted Brittany and took her mother's silver 2005 Dodge Neon. Roanoke County Police Chief Ray Lavinder said detectives don't know whether Brittany went willingly.
"We still believe she's in danger, and we're very concerned," Lavinder said.
The last confirmed sighting of the pair was at 8:35 p.m. Friday at the Salem Walmart, where a surveillance video shows them leaving the store, Lavinder said.
Easley is pushing a cart of merchandise purchased with Tina Smith's credit card, Lavinder said. The chief wouldn't say what Easley bought.
During a news conference, Easley's mother pleaded with her son to release Brittany.
"I want you to be safe and I know you're taking care of Brittany," Sallie Martin said. "If you would just take her somewhere and drop her off, call 911, or give me a call, come to the house, do whatever you need to do. We'll help you work this out. I love you."
His MySpace page was updated on Saturday.
"Got a lot on my mind," it said.
Easley has family ties to Alabama and North Carolina, where he was convicted of assaulting a public official in 1996, according to online court records. His North Carolina criminal history includes injury to personal property in 1995, and two counts of alcohol possession in 1998. In 2001, he was placed in a pretrial probationary program for making threatening phone calls to his ex-wife, Sheila Easley, the records say.
Brittany's father, Benny Smith, a police officer in South Boston, Va., separated from Tina Smith a few years ago, and Tina moved to Roanoke County with her two children, the Rev. John Eure said.
Easley and Tina Smith met online this summer, police said. Easley moved into her house on the quiet cul-de-sac in October, said Lavinder.
Brittany's MySpace page mentions working out and watching movies together with Easley. He called her "Short Stack." She called him "Handcuff Buddy."
Brittany's friends and teachers prayed for her safe return at a vigil Tuesday night. An American flag snapped at half-staff and snowflakes flew onto dozens of middle-schoolers, teachers and parents clutching candles as they sang "Amazing Grace" and prayed over the frozen lawn of Glenvar High School.
"We want Jeff Easley to bring her home," Glenvar Middle School Principal Juliette Myers said.
"We know Brittany would come back of her own accord if given the opportunity.

I think this is media hype. If the mother really thought she and her daughter were in danger she would done something more than just posting something on her FB. This is sensationalism IMHO.Brittany's mother, Tina Smith, was worried, too. On Thursday, the 41-year-old Roanoke County nurse posted this on her Facebook profile:

This whole thing just screams child abuse. If aunts saw all of this on the one day they spent with the "family" on Thanksgiving then surely this mother had to know.
Handcuff buddy? I think her little friends know a lot and they have told LE a lot.
Do remember folks. This is a little 12 year old girl just coming into her sexuality. A lot of people let her down.
I hope they can find her alive. But Her life will never be the same. She will live with all of this forever.

Brittany Mae Smith Involved with Mom's Beau?
An Internet exchange last Friday between mother and daughter indicated some troubles at home.
On Brittany Mae's MySpace page, Smith wrote to her daughter, "Everything happens for a reason, Britt. I-L-Y" ("I love you").
Jeffrey Easley also responded, writing, "I love you too. Trust me. Everything will work out."
Police say Brittany may have left with Easley willingly, hinting there may have been some kind of relationship, but they warn that she may be in danger.
"Early Show" co-anchor Erica Hill noted there's been speculation about the actual nature of the relationship between Brittany and Easley. She asked Lavinder, "Is there any further information on them this morning? Does that Walmart video, did that show you anything in particular that gave you a clue as to their relationship?"
Lavinder replied, "No, it didn't give us anything that would indicate any type of a relationship."
As for Tina Smith's death, Lavinder said they "haven't really concentrated on that homicide."
He said, "Our main objective at this point is to find the 12-year-old girl and I think once we find her, that'll open a lot of doors for us. And we can concentrate on the homicide investigation."
Hill said, "I know as part of your investigation to find Brittany you've monitored social networks and put pleas out for information on MySpace, Twitter, Facebook. Are you learning anything from some of those social networking sites, from some postings there?"
Lavinder answered, "No, that's kind of a frustration for us. We haven't been able to get the cooperation from some of the social media centers like Facebook and -- that we would like to have and we feel like there may be some helpful information there, but we simply have not gotten the cooperation we would like at this time."
Hill remarked that online exchanges between Brittany and her mother, as indicated by Glor, perhaps alluded to a difficult time between the two.
But Lavinder said they don't have any information that the relationship was strained.
"As far as we know, you know, the mother and daughter were doing some shopping or some errands together on Friday morning," he said. "So, we really don't have any positive information that anything like that was going on."

Brittany Mae Smith Update: Police "Not Sure" if Missing Girl Went Willingly with Jeffrey Scott Easley
But police don't know if the 12-year-old went with man willingly.
When asked if Brittany was abducted during a press conference Tuesday, Roanoke County Police Chief Ray Lavinder answered that they feel confident that she is with Easley.
"We believe that she's with him, and we're not exactly sure about the situation," Lavinder said.

Re: 12 yr old Brittany Mae Smith has found in the San Francisco / Jeff Easley pleads no contest and will spend the rest of his life in prison for the murder of Brittany's mother, Tina Smith
I think the mother, Tina, alerted by the observations of her family at Thanksgiving, started trying to get Easley to leave and things escalated..It sounds like, from the mySpace messages, that Brittany was being pulled in two directions. Tina had given him an ultimatum about getting out, but he wasn't going to and maybe Brittany didn't want him to (?)..OR maybe, from the phone call with her friend, she went along with him because she was afraid that he would hurt her mother...Wonder why she wasn't in school last Friday morning? Wonder if she knew that he had already killed her Mom when she left with him...Maybe he got her to go with him by threatening to hurt her Mom, but she didn't know that she was already dead...Or maybe she knows that he killed her, and he threatened to do the same to her if she didn't go with him...It looks like in the Walmart picture, that she is looking directly at the camera...Maybe trying to send a message?

Or 12 yr old Brittany may be going off into the wild blue to live happily after with her Prince Charming and not even know that her mother is dead. Who knows what this man has told her or how he's manipulating her. If she was having issues with her mother and Jeff was sympathizing with her she might see him as her savior. Mentally she's a little girl, even though she doesn't look like one.
