Shelley Mook: Missing Bedford County teacher’s burned car found
Shelley Mook has been missing for almost a week, but it takes something like finding a missing persons burned-out car before it goes national.
"The car that belongs to a missing 8th grade Teacher from Bedford County Tennessee has been reported found on Thursday.
Shelley Mook, 24, disappeared during the time she had taken a few days off work to move into her new home in Murfreesboro."
Evidently the car was found on Monday, but it wasn't reported to the police till Thursday. Shelley was a well liked teacher at Harris Middle School. I am sure if she is not found by Friday that there will be a big search party looking for her this weekend.

UPDATED: Missing teacher's vehicle found
The car owned by a missing Harris Middle School teacher was found burned in Rutherford County late Monday night, Bedford County Sheriff Randall Boyce said this afternoon. Local authorities released information about the teacher's disappearance Wednesday.
Shelley Mook's Pontiac Grand Prix was recovered off Manchester Highway, said Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Kristen Helm.
A creek near the car was searched, investigators said Thursday night, adding that rumors of Mook's body being found are untrue.
Mook, 24, who moved to Murfreesboro last week, was last seen about 3 p.m. Monday, Detective Sgt. Brian Crews said Wednesday.
"She had been living in Shelbyville and just moved to Murfreesboro over the weekend," Crews said.
"She has an ex-husband that lives in Bedford County. As far as we can tell, he is the last person to see her when she went to his house to drop off their daughter," Crews said. "She was supposed to meet a maintenance man at her new apartment on Monday afternoon at 4:30 but, according to the landlord. she never showed up."
A woman who said she was Mook's closest friend told the Times-Gazette this morning she is confident she'll be found.
"She's a strong woman," Brittany Brooks said. "She's going to come through."
Brooks asked for prayers for her friend. "We need everybody to pray for her," Brooks said.
Mook teaches eighth grade reading "and absolutely loves her job," according to Brooks.
"Shelley Mook is an excellent member of the Harris Middle School faculty and well-liked by students and staff," principal Bill Pietkiewicz said this morning. "She is in her second year of teaching and is helping to sponsor our student council. Our thoughts and prayers are focused on her safe return."
Crews said Mook had taken time off from work to move, Crews said. Co-workers became concerned after she didn't return or schedule a substitute.
Anyone with information should call Shelbyville Police Department's detective division at 684-5811.

The car was probably burned to destroy evidence. I wonder if there are or will be ground searches to look for her. When she dropped off her daughter would that give the ex an alibi? He was with his daughter correct? What about the maintenance man? I know the landlord said she did not show but is the landlord the maintenance man as well to know that for sure?

LM I was just going to mention that. They had a doctor on NG tonight and she said along with the husband another place that she thinks bears looking into was the apointment she had at the new apartment.
Her car was found burned not too far from where her new apartment would be.
She is a beautiful young woman and her daughter is a lovely little girl.
Husband had been harrassing her and has a bit of a past. They didn't tell much about him. Where he works or what his lifestyle was. Everybody seems to be hands off..waiting for LE to decide and investigate.
What is with all these missing women. Is it an epidemic?

Jeanne I think there is an epidemic of missing women going on. One reason I think there is so many is that with out a body someone gets away with murder. So as long as a murderer hides the body well they get away with murder. The internet has educated many of us on how much this is going on. Not just us "crime blogger" but "murderers" as well.

I think that the media is reporting more and more, and we are hearing about these events better than we ever had.
My mom grew up in a small town(pop 800 at the time) in the 30's and 40's in Southern Virginia and told me a story about a minister that was found to be sexually abusing several of the boys in his youth group. The men in town (the fathers and others) visited the minister, told him to be out of town by sunrise the next morning. He was. Back then Mom says they took care of things themselves and didn't involve the police. (Think: Mayberry, with a Don Knotts as your main cop) No sophisticated investigations. Even the cops might have run somebody out of town.
Growing up in Northern Virginia I remember very clearly the Lyon sisters going missing. I had never heard of kids being abducted (guess I was a bit sheltered). I also remembered those girls disappearing down Route 1 near Quantico, they caught that guy IIRC.

Hippie Chick I know it well. Being Catholic we have gone through hell finding out about how our priests were simply shuffled around when they were found to be molesting young girls and mostly young boys.
I had a real battle on my hand...keeping my religion.
The problem with moving sexual predators out of town is that they were free to set up camp in another town and the madness continues.
I almost have to go along with the father that is currently in the news. His child was killed and they want to free the man that killed him after doing unimaginable things to him.
He is saying that if he sees him outside the prison gates he will kill him and suffer the consequences.
People are supporting him. Everybody has had about enough.
At breakfast the other day with my friends the topic of forgiveness came up. They are all bible people and said yes they could forgive.
I told them I could never forgive a person that did harm..sexual or killing.
They disagreed with me and said it was a comandment.
I said no way would I grant my forgiveness to somebody to "ease their way".
They would know forever how much I hated them and their evil ways and acts. And it would not consume me or make me a bad person.
Forgiveness is mine to give and I chose not to give it to anybody that harms children.
Just me.

I can't imagine forgiving someone who harms my child or grandchildren. I can't even imagine having any sort of SANITY after something like that happens. I completely understand wanting to kill someone who killed my child. Sorry, but I can.

Thank You!!
She's my daughters dog, my grand-dog. Her name is Daisy and, shes very protective, she's the best dog ever. Except all the licking. She's about 4 yrs old, daughter got him when she was 8 weeks. Just a peanut. Daughter used to carry her around on her hip when she was little, like she was a toddler. She still thinks she's a puppy, if you even make eye contact she wriggles her way onto your lap.

I haven't heard but I was just going to post how worried I am about that child. I can't believe they left her in the home if they have any idea he is dangerous.
Actually we do know from the police reports he has anger issues. Do we know if she is with his mother or is he the caregiver.
They haven't really told much about him..where he works..where he lives?
On NG last evening they did say the little girl was with family. I am not sure who that meant because the mothers family is saying they don't get to see her often.
Such a beautiful mother and little girl. What a shame.

Jeanne, I happened to see NG last night too and I was under the impression she was w/ the Father. Shelley Mook's Brother said that his Mother managed to see the little girl at school this past week.
I too am scared to death for this child! She could easily be with a person who murdered her Mother and I sure hope that at the very least CPS goes out to the home, maybe they can find a legal reason to remove her if LE doesn't have enough!

Well, they let Drew Peterson have 4 of his kids after his wife Stacey "disappeared". ( He got his other 2 kids after Kathleen was found dead too) and there were plenty of people who thought he killed Kathleen. I was beside myself with worry over that. IMO they should have let those kids go with Stacey's sister instead.

You are so right and what a nutcase that guy is. They just took the death penalty off the table in Illinois so Drew will be around for a while if he is found guilty. We will continue to support that bag of bones.
I always wondered how he got away with all that. C'mon. Police officer...

Shelley Mook news: Missing teacher seen at home of ex on day she vanished
Shelbyville, Tenn. - An eyewitness saw Shelley Mook at the home of her ex-husband on the day she disappeared, police in Shelbyville said Friday.
Shelley vanished on Feb. 28 after leaving work at Harris Middle School in Shelbyville. She dropped her 6-year-old daughter off at her ex-husband Tyler Mook’s home and was reported missing on Feb. 29 after a Pontiac Grand Prix found in flames on the side of Broad Street in Rutherford County was determined to be hers. Officials believe Shelley was headed to Murfreesboro when she vanished.
WSMV reports that although Tyler Mook has not been named a suspect in the case, he and his family are not cooperating with authorities.
The Shelbyville Times-Gazette reported earlier this week that Shelley and her ex-spouse have a history of domestic violence, with police being called to the couple’s home on at least one occasion. In addition, charges were once filed against Tyler for trying to run Shelley off the road.
Shelley’s friends and family are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to her safe return.
Police urge anyone with information regarding the Shelley Mook case to call the Bedford County Sheriff’s Department at 931-684-3232 or Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department at 615-904-3049 or Tennessee Bureau of Investigations at 615-744-4000.

Missing Teacher, Ex Have Violent History
According to the Shelbyville Times Gazette, police records show a history of domestic violence between missing English teacher Shelley Mook and her ex-husband, Tyler Mook.
Charges were filed after, authorities said, he tried to run Shelley Mook's car off a road, and deputies said they had been called to the couple's home at least once.
On Friday, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation executed a search warrant at Tyler Mook's home to look for evidence.
Shelley Mook has been missing for more than a week.
"Shelley's an excellent communicator, excellent, so she would have called me," said one official at Harris Middle School.
School officials said they aren't posting signs about the woman's disappearance at the school so as not to remind Shelley Mook's 6-year-old daughter that her mother is missing.

Poor, poor Susan Powell. Awhile back one of her kids said Mommy was in a cave. Hope they exhausted their search for her in any caves. Josh makes me sick, from the very very beginning I knew he was guilty, when reporters were on his front lawn and asking him questions, and he said he really needed to go see "his boys". Anybody innocent would have been happy to give information or answer questions to get their loved ones face and info out there, IMO.
I hope they gather evidence that will point to who did this (I suspect hubby) and it's not a repeat of Susan Powell.

This story reports the little girl is staying with the paternal grandparents.
This one has me curious if she left the husbands home and just didn't make it to the appointment..or did?
She could have been meeting somebody or who knows who she ran into at the apartment complex. I believe her burned car was found up there rather than down where the ex lives.

Restraining Order Issued Before Woman Went Missing
A Bedford County woman is still considered missing, but local sheriff's deputies said they are conducting a search for a body.
Shelley Mook's burned out car was discovered Feb. 28. The last person she was seen with was her ex-husband, Tyler Mook, who is officially a person of interest in the case.
At the time of Mook's disappearance, Channel 4 learned that Tyler Mook was arrested after being suspected of theft and charged with reckless endangerment, a case where Mook said her ex-husband ran her and her daughter off the road.
Within 24 hours of Shelley Mook's disappearance, Tyler Mook had his entire police record expunged. Currently, there is nothing on his police record.
The only suggestion of problems comes from the couple's divorce papers.
"Plaintiff is fearful that when these papers are served on the defendant, he will do bodily harm to her and her daughter because he has an emotional mood disorder," say the divorce papers.
Later, a mutual restraining order was issued, which told both parties to stop harassing, threatening, assaulting or abusing the other. The order was only signed by Shelley Mook.
Channel 4 has also learned that at least one call was made to the Department of Children's Services that reported that the couple's 6-year-old daughter showed signs of physical abuse. DCS confidentiality policy does not allow for them to confirm or deny if the Mook home was under investigation.

I wonder how he got his entire record expunged and especially w/in 24 hours?!

Searches continue for Mook, Smelcer
Ground searches are over but sheriff's investigators are checking phone records in hopes of finding clues to the whereabouts of missing teacher Shelley Jones Mook, Sheriff Randall Boyce said Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the family of Bobby Smelcer, who hasn't been seen since late November 2010, is continuing to organize ground and water searches across Bedford County.
The Bedford County Search and Rescue Team will search Duck River on Sunday morning, according to Smelcer's sister Kristy Ray. Cadaver dogs will be on the boats and may be used on land, she said.
Interested participants should meet at Big Springs Shopping Center parking lot.
The family is also stressing that individuals across the county should search their own properties.
"We're looking through phone records trying to come up with something," Boyce said of the Mook investigation.

Edinboro Woman Remains Missing for 3 Weeks
March 21, 2011, 4:52 pm
New information out of Tennessee tonight, in the search for a former Edinboro woman, who's been missing for three weeks. Police in Bedford, Tennessee now say they're searching for a body, not just a missing person.
This is in the case of 25-year old Shelley Jones-Mook. She's the General McLane graduate who had been living and teaching at a school in Tennessee. She disappeared on February 28th, making today three weeks since she was last scene. Police found her burned-out car in a field, a few days later. Police say her ex-husband was the last person who saw her that day. He's now being called a person of interest in the case. Police say Tyler Mook has had some run-ins with the law, including the time when he allegedly tried to run her car off the road. Another startling development involves the couple's six year-old daughter. According to previous police reports, the child appeared to be the victim of physical abuse by Tyler Mook. However due to confidentiality laws, the extent of that investigation is unknown. We've also learned some troubling details of the relationship between Mook, and her ex-husband. After the couple's divorce, a mutual restraining order was filed, but according to reports out of Tennessee, the document was only signed by Shelley Mook. The FBI is helping Tennessee police in that on-going investigation. 12News has also learned that Shelley's six-year-old daughter is being cared for by Shelley's mother and Tyler Mook through a shared custody agreement.

'No luck' in search for missing Shelbyville teacher
The recent search of a Franklin County railroad yard for clues in the disappearance of Shelbyville, Tenn., middle school teacher Shelley Jones Mook was unproductive, but investigators hope renewed attention to the case might jog some memories.
Authorities searched the CSX rail yard in Cowan, Tenn., last Thursday "with no luck finding Shelley," Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm said this week. Cowan is about halfway between Winchester and Sewanee in Franklin County.
Bedford County sheriff's officials said Wednesday that there was nothing new in the investigation there.
A $20,000 reward is offered for information in the case, and no charges have been filed. Mook, 24, last was seen alive between 3:30 and 4 p.m. CDT on Feb. 28, 2011, according to Helm, at her ex-husband's home while dropping off their child.
Mook was living in Murfreesboro at the time and was supposed to meet a maintenance person at her apartment at 4:30 p.m. CDT, but she never showed up and has been missing since, Helm said.
Early the next morning, authorities found Mook's late-model Pontiac Grand Prix abandoned and burning near a field along U.S. Highway 41A in Murfreesboro, Helm said. Evidence of an accelerant was recovered from the vehicle, she said.
"TBI and law enforcement in the Bedford and Marshall counties have conducted a couple ground searches for Shelley with no luck finding her in over the last 18 months," Helm said.
The missing woman's ex-husband, Tyler Mook, "gave an initial statement to local law enforcement right after Shelley disappeared and his home [was] searched," Helm said. "He has not been cooperative since that time."
Tyler Mook is a "person of interest," Helm said.
The five- to six-hour search in Franklin County last week involved about 50 searchers from 10 different local and state agencies, according to Helm.
Agents were acting on "some new information about this particular area in Cowan and conducted the search to follow up on that lead," she said. Helm said she couldn't comment on any use of credit cards or cell phones belonging to Shelley Mook.

Shelley Mook’s family alleges threats in custody hearing
SHELBYVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
The family of a Middle Tennessee teacher who has been missing for two years said they received a disturbing threat from their own granddaughter.
That is just one of the allegations that a judge heard Thursday during a heated custody battle involving the family of Shelley Mook.
Mook was last seen in February 2011 at her ex-husband’s home, and police later found her burned car in Murfreesboro.
While they have yet to find any trace of the middle school teacher the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation considers her ex-husband, Tyler Mook, a suspect.
Now, Shelley Mook’s parents have custody of the Mooks’ 8-year-old daughter. They claimed in court the girl told them she was going to kill them after allegedly getting a pocket knife and matches from Tyler Mook.
Tyler Mook said the claims are absolutely false, but now the judge will decide who to believe.
Shelley Mook’s mother, Debrah Sikora, said the girl left a message on a dry erase board saying “I myt kil you that is ol I got to say.”
After talking with a counselor, the child allegedly said Tyler Mook told her to light Sikora’s house on fire by setting fire under a bed.

I can't believe this child would say such horrible things. She can't even spell!! She is now what, 9 years old?? WTH??
I agree, there should be no question who should have custody. And, she needs some serious psychological help. No clue where her mother is, her father is obviously involved and a Creep..this has got to be so tough for her. OMG!! I also feel for Shelly's parents and family.

UPDATE: New updates in the case of Shelly Mook, a missing teacher who lived in Murfreesboro
The former husband of Shelly Mook, the Bedford County teacher who has been missing since February of 2011, has again failed to gain custody of his daughter through the courts.
In 2011, the car that belonged to Shelly Mook was found abandoned and burned just south of Murfreesboro on the Rutherford / Bedford County line. Directly after Mook’s disappearance, Tyler Mook gained custody of his daughter. A week later, the mother of Shelly Mook, Debra Sikora, gained custody of the child.
Prior to the mysterious disappearance of Mook, she and her husband divorced in 2009. During their brief marriage, Tyler allegedly submitted Shelly to domestic violence, according to court documents. After the divorce, Shelly received primary custody rights of their daughter. Approximately two years later, Shelly Mook and her daughter moved to Murfreesboro. Shortly after that move, she disappeared.
Ever since the disappearance of Shelly Mook, Tyler Mook and his parents have been fighting the mother of Shelly (Debra Sikora) and the courts to regain custody of his daughter. Despite his attempted efforts, he has not gained full custody of the child and documents suggest that he has had a past drug problem that might endanger the child. During an evidentiary hearing that occurred in July of 2011, “numerous witnesses testified to Father’s history of illegal drug use, drug trafficking, violent behavior, and verbal and physical abuse towards Mother.”
On Monday (2/25/13), The Supreme Court of Tennessee denied Tyler Mook and his parents from appealing the custody case in order to seek parenting rights of the child. The little girl is currently living with her maternal grandmother in Pennsylvania.
As far as the disappearance of Shelly Mook goes, there are no new leads in the case. The TN Bureau of Investigation is still investigating. Although her body has not been found, law enforcement beleive that Mook is likely dead.

Yet again, another case where the POI gained custody for a week but then the maternal grandmother managed to win custody but the fight has been on ever since. If that state (& all other states) would just adopt the law that the suspect or POI in a disappearance cannot have custody of the child all this would not be a problem.
