Hi gang!! Ive been catching up with everything, and reading some of the trial stuff...I think manslaughter was the best we were going to get, like the police said to prove murder 1 after all these years would be near impossble...If i'm being honest i don't think Nick drove off from Cheri's with the intention of murder, so in the laws eyes thats Manslaughter...
The thing that i'm peeved at, the jury obviously took on board the womans statement about seeing two guys with a woman walkin along the rd WHOS THE SECOND GUY!! Whoever he is hes harboured this for years, would of giving Cory a lot of closure if he had come forward, and he's walkin scotfree???

I know, prayerbone, what a shame!! I remember discussing this awhile back, about the statute of limitations on aiding and abetting a murder was already past for this case. We were talking about how NM's family probably helped him cover this up and how the time had passed for them to be held legally accountable, as well as Brent Barkley (?), his friend that didn't pass the lie detector. There was talk about trying to change that law, but don't know if anybody followed through or not. Seems like the statute of limitations was only 3 years, but I could be wrong. Just keep your mouth shut for 3 years, and you are free and clear...In Oregon, anyway.

I too think the 2nd guy was Brent Barkley. No way would he admit to it so the fact he testified it was not him I don't buy it.

I don't think I've seen this posted.....if it has been, scuse me. I bet the McGuffin's wish they wouldn't have sent LE to whoever the woman was......they must be kickin' themselves big time now!
A key piece of testimony was McGuffin's alleged confession to David Brakefield.
Brakefield testified McGuffin told him, 'I strangled that bitch."
The prosecution actually discovered Brakefield after receiving a tip from the McGuffin family.
Shortly after the case reopened, Frasier asked the McGuffins to provide names of anyone the family wanted investigators to interview.
The McGuffins suggest a woman who later told investigators she knew nothing of the case, but said she knew someone who did: David Brakefield.

Re: 7/19 - Nick McGuffin guilty of manslaughter in the death of Leah Freeman/ Nicholas McGuffin sentenced to 10 years/ Judge will hear McGuffin's motion on 9/9/2011/BREAKING NEWS: JUDGE WILL NOT ALLOW A NEW TRIAL!!!!!
Sitting on the jury that last week convicted 29-year-old Nicholas McGuffin of manslaughter was “stressful,” one of the jurors said Monday. McGuffin will be sentenced next Monday on the manslaughter conviction for the killing of 15-year-old Leah Freeman, who disappeared June 28, 2000.
Coos Bay resident Deb Lenaburg was one of 12 jurors who decided McGuffin’s fate — but she was one of the two who voted against the manslaughter conviction in what she described as “a tough case.”
Lenaburg said she doesn’t believe there was enough evidence for any conviction in the 11-year-old cold case, noting that the prosecution’s argument was based on circumstantial evidence and statements McGuffin allegedly made over the years.
“We can’t even say how she died,” said Lenaburg, a reference to the Coos County medical examiner’s inability to state a precise cause of death, largely because Freeman’s body wasn’t found until five weeks after she disappeared. “Yes, she did die, and that is so sad; however, it’s all speculation that he did it.”
The jury found McGuffin not guilty of the charge of first-degree murder, by a vote of 10-2 against the charge. But jurors found him guilty, 10-2, on the charge of manslaughter, which required that the jury find McGuffin “recklessly” caused Freeman’s death. For a jury manslaughter conviction, at least 10 votes are needed.
Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier was reduced to speculation last week in prosecuting the case, theorizing in his closing argument that McGuffin got into a fight with Freeman after she tried to break up with him, that maybe he tried to pull her into his car, that she screamed and that he strangled her, either to “shut her up” or to kill her. But with no witnesses to prove it, Frasier had to rely on circumstantial evidence about McGuffin’s whereabouts that night and statements he allegedly made to others after she disappeared, including, “I strangled that bitch” and “It’s amazing what you can get away with in Coos County.”
The case will stick with her, Lenaburg said.
“I don’t ever want to go through that again,” she said. “Yes, a young girl lost her life, but now a young man has lost his life. I’m not really even sure he did it.”
Other jurors either couldn’t be reached or declined to comment on Monday. McGuffin’s lawyers have said they will appeal.

I'm so happy for Cory and that her life can now move on.
I feel zero sympathy for Nick's parents because as far as I'm concerned I think they covered for him for 10 years. I understand a parent being in denial, even huge denial but this was a girl that they knew and they had to have known their son had a temper at the very least. They have done him no favors by enabling him, in fact that's probably the reason he's sitting where he is now. Too bad they didn't teach him that no matter what your intentions are or what you have done, you must be accountable. For them to treat Cory as they have, shame on them.
Those were great pics that you brought over BJ, you always find the best ones!

Nick has not lost his life. 9 yrs is not his life. Leah whole life was taken from her. How could she say that? Everything points to Nick accidentally killed Leah. Probably in a fit of rage. 10 yrs in prison is not his whole life.

“20/20” GETS RARE ACCESS INSIDE A POLICE INVESTIGATION FROM START TO FINISH AS THEY UNLOCK A 10-YEAR MURDER MYSTERY OF AN OREGON
Jim Avila’s Report Airs on “20/20,” Friday, July 29, 10 pm ET on ABC
“20/20” goes inside a police investigation as they help unlock a murder mystery haunting a community for 10 years. In the summer of 2000, 15-year-old Leah Freeman went missing in Coquille, Oregon. For weeks the police chief treated it as a missing person case, until Leah’s decomposed body was found a few miles out of town. Speculation swirled over who the killer could be. Ten years later, new Police Chief Mark Dannels made it his personal goal to find Leah’s killer. Since Jim Avila’s original report aired in October 2010, there has been a trial and, just last week, a manslaughter conviction. The report includes new interviews with Leah’s mom and the DA who tried the case based solely on circumstantial evidence. “20/20” airs FRIDAYJULY 29 (10:00 – 11:00 p.m. ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Opinions of reporting on the trial by locals
What will The World print when the McGuffin trial has ended? The bold, blaring headlines, the encapsulated bullet points, the repeated, poorly written blah-blah-blah. It is disappointing that, despite early disclaimers made by The World, and the installation of a new editor, the reporting continues in the vein of CSI or other TV crime drama. These are real people, not scripted actors; the continuing impact on their daily existence is personal and perpetual. They should not, as well, be subjected to sensationalized reporting.
I daily read Eugene's Register-Guard for real news, and The World only because I am a Coos County resident. I am hopeful the level of journalism and editing can be elevated to make The World a valid newspaper.

In response to Leslie Suva's July 14 letter, 'Trial participants are real people," I take exception to Ms. Suva's criticism of both The World and its coverage of the Leah Freeman trial.
I read The New York Times for national and international news, but I subscribe to The World for local news. Granted, it is a smaller paper and some reporters move on. Nate Traylor just moved to L.A., and Jessica Musicar transferred to court and crime reporting in Kauai, Hawaii. Enter Jessie Higgins, a 2011 University of Oregon journalism grad from St. Helens.
Ma'am, you have hurt my feelings with your criticism of her writing. She inherited a complicated, wrenching murder trial in the first three months of her career. I believe she hit the mark despite the stress, deadlines and very long days between court and the office. The reporting was not perfect, but perfection is overrated, and the reporting was real. Thank you, Jessie.
Ms. Suva, you are a harsh critic. I certainly hope that you have a subscription so that you help pay reporters' salaries. Maybe you should have merely tuned in for the verdict to avoid the messiness of the complete picture. I read the coverage every day, and I was not offended. I was grateful.

I got an email from Cory and the 20/20 episode will NOT be on Friday night. ABC did this last time.
However, I think they decided to wait for the sentencing. I think that's a good decision. As soon as she tells for sure when it's running, I w/post it.
One thing Cory said to tell everyone is that she hopes we understand that she has not had any time to come here and post yet.
I can't blame her. She's got the sentencing coming up, they are celebrating Leah's life w/a big BBQ this Sunday and ABC has been interviewing her. She has a more than full plate.
I told her we all understand why she has not posted yet. One thing I can tell you. She is a VERY happy person. Elated is more the word.

SOOOOOOO Confused... Umm. I am looking at my TV guide as we SPEAK and it says that Leah's story is on tonight at 10:00... What the????? I have it on DVR, but will be watching to see what is really on.. when I went to their website I see they are talking about Progeria kids again, so most likely not Leah's story That being said, I said it before, I thought it strange they didn't just wait one more weekend until the actual sentencing come MONDAY!!
CORY, SO good to see you here, even for a quick second!!!! Miss you WOMAN!!!

Count me in on that too. Sending good thoughts and prayers for you today Cory.
I'm hoping for 20 years, if not that then not less that 15, a year for for each year Leah was here on earth.

Im praying for peace for you today Cory. May the lord give you the strength and the words to tell Nick exactly how you feel...(((HUGS)))

McGuffin receives mandatory 120 months in prison plus three years probation
The State could have asked for up to twenty years on this Measure 11 crime but did not and settled for the mandatory minimum sentence of ten years, $1,738 in restitution and McGuffin will be on probation for three years once his sentence is served. Will update with details of the proceedings later this afternoon. McGuffin will automatically receive credit for time already served.
The Freeman family was pleased with the sentence. (If they are happy, I am Happy) :cheering:

A judge in Coquille sentenced Nicholas McGuffin to 10 years in prison today in the death of his 15-year-old girlfriend Leah Freeman, who went missing in Coquille on June 28, 2000.
The Oregonian’s continuing coverage of the death of Leah Freeman and the trial of Nicholas McGuffin. In a handwritten statement McGuffin read to the courtroom, he maintained his innocence and said people had twisted his words and perjured themselves in court.
"I will tell you this, I'm not going to stop claiming my innocence, not now, not ever & maybe just maybe one day people will start to see it, & believe it, but in the meantime, you're putting an innocent person in jail, taking me away from my daughter & my family," McGuffin wrote.
"Not only did our prescious (sic) Leah get her life taken away from her, but now you're taking my life away from me, an innocent man's life. This is not justice by placing an innocent person in jail while the guilty person or people are still out there walking free."
A Coos County Circuit Court jury found McGuffin guilty of manslaughter last month. The same jury rejected a charge of murder.
Defense attorney Shaun McCrea said she will appeal the verdict.
Freeman went missing on a June evening after leaving a friend's home in anger. Her shoe was later found near the cemetery and a second shoe days later in a rural area. Her body was found about a month later on a steep, dense embankment by a country road outside Coquille. The medical examiner was unable to determine the cause of death.

I have been wondering if he had 1 or 2 kids. He only has 1, a daughter."I will tell you this, I'm not going to stop claiming my innocence, not now, not ever & maybe just maybe one day people will start to see it, & believe it, but in the meantime, you're putting an innocent person in jail, taking me away from my daughter & my family," McGuffin wrote.

I don't want to sound mean but I really don't want to read this murderer's manifesto of here on VH. He is not innocent, was found GUILTY and GUILTY he is! He is scum and I wish I could legally forbid him from uttering her name!

The judge sentenced Nicholas McGuffin to 10 years in prison on manslaughter charges. Mcguffin spoke out in court and told the judge he was putting an innocent man in jail.
"I'm innocent, I'm innocent, I'm innocent," says Nicholas McGuffin.
McGuffin, the man accused of murdering his teen girlfriend has always professed his innocence since the day Leah disappeared.
On Monday before the judge, he read a final statement to say he'll never stop saying it.
"You're putting an innocent person in jail. You're tearing me away from my daughter and my family. Not only did precious Leah get her life so wrongly taken away from her, you're wrongly taking my life away from me," says McGuffin.
McGuffin says forensic evidence showed that he was never linked to Leah. He says there were lies told by witnesses and his words were twisted throughout the entire trial.
"It sickens me that people would even think that of me. And I never wish anyone to have to deal with that even my worst enemy as this has been the hardest thing to live through in my life and now has become even harder with this injustice that's being served to me today," says McGuffin.
Defense attorneys pushed to have McGuffin's sentence reduced to 75 months but the judge denied the motion telling McGuffin it was a tragic that Leah had to die at such a young age.
McGuffin will get credit for time served.
