On anniversary, Aruba maintains Gaithersburg man murdered Robyn Gardner
WTOP Exclusive: On anniversary, Aruba maintains Gaithersburg man murdered Robyn Gardner
Friday - 8/2/2013, 12:27pm ET
By Neal Augenstein
WASHINGTON - On the two-year anniversary of the disappearance of Robyn Gardner, of Frederick, Md., prosecutors in Aruba tell WTOP they still believe Gary Giordano of Gaithersburg, Md., kidnapped and murdered his traveling partner.
"The case is still open, and we accuse him of murder, kidnapping, and fraud," says Ann Angela, a spokesperson for the Aruban prosecutor's office.
Gardner disappeared Aug. 2, 2011. Giordano told police she didn't return to shore when the two went snorkeling.
Giordano was detained in Aruba for almost four months, but a judge ordered him released when prosecutors couldn't produce enough evidence to hold him.
Giordano was never charged, and Gardner's body was never recovered.
Giordano's attorney Steven Kupferberg, tells WTOP, "Gary authorized me to say he has no comment" about prosecutors' allegations or the anniversary of Gardner's disappearance.
In the days after Gardner's disappearance, Giordano contacted American Express, seeking payment of the travel insurance policy he'd taken out for Gardner. The two met on a dating website.
Giordano filed suit against American Express in Illinois, and the insurance company countersued Giordano in Maryland.
Federal court records show the Maryland case is nearing settlement.
Danielle Colson-Unglesbee, Gardner's sister, says Gardner's family "is still hoping for her return."
"We certainly love her very much. I'm going to church to light a candle in her honor, and my mom will do the same in Florida," says Colson-Unglesbee.
Colson-Unglesbee says lawyers for American Express told her they were drawing up final settlement papers, which do not include any payout to Giordano.
"We're very happy about that," says Colson-Unglesbee.

If they are waiting for Frederick County police to solve the crime, they are going to be very disappointed. Out cops are dumb as hell.
Gary Giordano, Former Murder and Insurance Fraud suspect, releases shocking tell-all book, The Aruba Files "The Redemption of Gary V. Giordano."
July 31, 2014
NEW YORK, July 31, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- It was the darkest period in his life; he lost his friend, alone in a foreign country, with no assistance from the US government and a media war raging against him. What should have been a vacation in paradise turned into a true hell that changed his life forever in August of 2011. Gary Giordano details the torture he endured in an Aruban prison after being arrested for murdering Robyn Gardner in an alleged plot to collect insurance and "cash in" on her death. He spent four horrific months in Aruba's KIA prison and was never charged with a crime. Giordano authored the book to expose the real villains and the true story about that fateful day.
He discloses to the reader intimate and personal details about his relationship with Robyn. Readers learn of the passionate relationship the couple shared during the weeks and months before her death.
Giordano published never-before-seen, classified FBI interview reports and emails, sealed Aruban interrogation transcripts, and Grand Jury evidence. Along with these detailed reports are shocking photos taken of him during his four-month incarceration by a prisoner who smuggled in a cell phone. Vivid photos with the coast guard and police just moments after Gardner disappeared.
The book features complete phone transcripts with American Express, exposing the dialogue he had with agents about travel insurance policies and his request to extend his travel in Aruba. Readers will learn that fraudulent tabloid media reports contributed to a false understanding that Giordano purchased a life insurance policy in Gardner's name. In fact, only travel insurance was purchased during booking to protect against medical expenses, accident protection and rental car insurance.
The Aruba Files reveals the real dangers at Baby Beach that cost two additional American lives after Giordano's release from KIA Prison. Reports from expert weather sources and a fisherman at the scene describe the dangers of severe riptides and strong currents the day of Robyn's disappearance. The book features pictures of safety signs and buoys placed at Baby Beach one year after Robyn's death. The huge signs read: "Welcome to Baby Beach. Beware: Rip Currents Undertow. Swim at your own risk. Lifevests recommended."
This is required reading for anyone passionate about law and the international judicial system. A must-read for anyone who followed the case in the court of public opinion.

I watched this. He is a snake and so his his attorney, Jose Baez. There is no doubt in my mind this was pre-meditated murder. IMO, Robyn never even got in the water.
