Dead child found near missing boy's St. Louis County home

ST. LOUIS COUNTY • Homicide detectives are responding to a path along the south side of the River Des Peres for a report of a boy found dead there.
Police have been searching the Affton area for a toddler reported missing about 11 a.m., authorities say.
St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch said is not yet clear if the dead child is the boy police have been searching for since 11 a.m., but "we are not missing any other children in this area."
The child was discovered along the edge of the New St. Marcus Cemetery by two passersby walking dogs, not a searcher, authorities said. The dog walkers were still at the crime scene Tuesday afternoon but would not comment.
Fitch said whoever is responsible for the child's death must be "a sick person."
"Anyone that would take a child into a wooded area like this needs to be dealt with severely by the criminal justice system," he said.
St. Louis County police issued a SARA Alert (St. Louis Area Regional Amber Alert) this afternoon for a missing boy, Tyler Dasher. Police were canvassing the 7700 block of Clevedon Street for a the 1-year-old boy.
The missing boy is white, has blonde hair, blues eyes, a red birthmark on his left shoulder and was wearing pajamas with pictures of trucks on them, police said. He has four upper teeth and four lower teeth. The boy weighs about 20 pounds and is 2 feet tall. He can stand but he cannot walk well on his own.
Police say Tyler's mother, Shelby A. Dasher, 20, put him to bed about 10:30 p.m. Monday, overslept this morning and reported him missing to police after she awoke about 11 a.m.
"There is no way to explain how this child got out of his crib, out of his room and out of the house," said Officer Rick Eckhard of the St. Louis County Police Department.
Police said Tyler's mother and grandmother were the only adults in the house last night and this morning. Tyler's father lives elsewhere in the metro area. Police said there was were no signs of anyone breaking into the home and nothing awry inside.
Police were questioning Tyler's mother and father at a police station this afternoon. Police have not identified any suspects.
"No one has been identified as a suspect, nor has anyone been eliminated as a suspect," Fitch said.
River Des Peres Parkway was shut down to traffic Tuesday at Gravois Avenue as police investigate. Crime scene tape also surrounded some of the cemetery's headstones.
A witness told police a man was seen with a child wrapped in a blue blanket walking along a street near Rogers Middle School, about a mile from the Dasher home, about 12:30. The man was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.

Police showed a blue blanket with images of stars, footballs, baseballs and soccer balls on it that was identical to one believed to be with Tyler. They also showed a set of pajamas to reporters Tuesday afternoon.
Police have closed Clevedon Street between Seth and Third avenues and were searching the area using police dogs, a helicopter and a tactical team.
The block is off Des Peres Parkway along the River Des Peres near the St. Louis city and county border.
A neighbor said she became suspcious about 11:30 p.m. Monday after seeing a car with a loud exhaust system make a U-turn on the block and drive off.
Several relatives of the boy arrived at the scene Tuesday afternoon crying and consoling each other.
Meagan Mayer, a childhood friend of Dasher's who showed up at the search scene today distraught and sobbing, said Dasher and Tyler's father had no domestic problems. She said she believes Tyler's father would never take him.

Missouri police find body of missing boy

(CNN) -- Police in eastern Missouri found the body of missing 1-year-old Tyler Daniel Dasher on Tuesday in a wooded area about a mile from his home.
A cause of death has not been determined and authorities are still in the early stages of trying to figure out what happened, St. Louis County police said in a statement.
There is currently no known motive for an abduction or apparent homicide, police said.
The body was initially discovered by people walking their dog, St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch told reporters.
Dasher was reported missing earlier Tuesday.
The boy's mother told investigators that she last saw the child when she put him to bed Monday night, according to CNN affiliate KSDK. She is being interviewed, said Fitch.

AFFTON, Mo. - A small body found Tuesday near a St. Louis County cemetery is that of a 1-year-old boy reported missing hours earlier from his home, police said.

But the medical examiner who confirmed the body as that of Tyler Dasher did not immediately determine the cause of death, county police spokesman Rick Eckhard said. Police did not plan to release any more information until Wednesday morning.

Tyler was reported missing around 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Affton home he shared with his mother, 20-year-old Shelby Dasher, and his grandmother. Shelby Dasher told police she had put Tyler to bed after midnight, then overslept and discovered him gone from his crib when she awoke.

Eckhard said in a written statement that police did not yet have a motive "for the abduction or apparent homicide."

St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch said at a news conference earlier Tuesday that people walking a dog found the body around 3:30 p.m. about a mile from the home.

No one has been arrested. Tyler's mother and father, who live separately, are both cooperating with police, Fitch said.

"At this point there are no suspects. Nor has anyone been eliminated as a suspect," Fitch said.

A long, wide area near the cemetery was cordoned off with yellow police tape. Police dogs sniffed the ground while officers placed barricades around the area where the small body was found. A small cluster of young adults cried and hugged as they watched from the cemetery. It wasn't clear if they were relatives of Tyler, and they declined interview requests.

The body was within about 100 feet of a busy road.

"It says to me it's a pretty sick person," Fitch said. "Anybody that would take a child and leave a child in a wooded area in that condition needs to be dealt with severely by the criminal justice system."

Fitch declined to discuss the condition of the body.

Police immediately suspected foul play because it was unlikely a 13-month-old could get himself out of his crib and wander from his home.

Meanwhile, police received reports of a man in a dark hoody carrying a small child in a blanket on Tuesday along a wooded area not far from the family home.

Fitch said officers were searching for that man for questioning.

No way a 13 mo old would just walk out of the house. And, you don't put a child of that young age to bed after midnight and then sleep until 11am?? Were the mother and grandmother drinking/drugging? Did they have company?

This is shades of the Irwin case IMO and this is so damned SAD!! That baby is adorable!!

The similarities between 1-year-old Tyler Dasher, who went missing from his St. Louis, Missouri home on Monday night or Tuesday morning, later to be found dead near a cemetery, and that of nearly 1-year-old Lisa Irwin, who remains missing, are eery. Is there a common perpetrator between the two cases, are the several similarities just mere coincidence, or was there an intentional duplication of the circumstances?

On Monday night the adults in the house with Tyler were reported to have been his mother, Shelby, and his grandmother. Tyler’s parents do not live together. Shelby states she put Tyler to bed at 10:30 pm. Shelby states she over slept, not awaking until 11 a.m. Tuesday morning. It was at that time she states she found and reported Tyler missing. As with the Lisa Irwin case, the time Tyler was put to bed has since changed. Reports also state Tyler was not put to bed until after midnight, while others continue to report “around 10:30 pm”.

Police state they found no signs of anyone breaking into the home.

A neighbor reported that around 11:30 Monday night she saw a car, which she described as having a loud exhaust system, making a u-turn on the same block. It then drove off. A witness would eventually come forward stating they saw a man in a hoody and dark sweatpants carrying a baby or small child wrapped in a blue blanket. This man was seen around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. As in the Lisa Irwin case, the man was reported to have been seen walking down the street, in the early morning hours, with the child. Police showed a picture of a blue blanket that was identical to the blanket that went missing from Tyler’s crib along with the baby.

Tyler’s body was found yesterday at a cemetery, near a river, only around 100 yards from the neighborhood in which he lived. The cause and manner of death has not yet been released. The condition of the body has not been made public, but statements made by St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch indicated that whomever was involved in the placement of Tyler’s body was “a sick person”.

St. Louis is approximately 250 miles east of Kansas City where baby Lisa has still not been found.

Police have arrested the mother of a 1-year-old boy whose body was found in a cemetery near his suburban St. Louis home.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, jail officials confirmed that the mother of Tyler Dasher, 20-year-old Shelby A. Dasher, was being held Wednesday at the St. Louis County Justice Center.

A police source told the paper that authorities believe the woman killed her son after she "became very, very angry."

Earlier, NBC affiliate station KSDK reported that a person was escorted early Wednesday morning by investigators to the scene where the boy's body was found, and then was transported to St. Louis County Police Headquarters in Clayton, a suburb of St. Louis.

In addition, the station reported that seven family members were interviewed late into the night Tuesday.

However, a Wednesday police statement made no mention of whether the person arrested was a member of Dasher's family. In the statement, police said that the person had not been booked into jail and that no further information would be released until the prosecuting attorney reviews the investigation.

Later, the Post-Dispatch reported that Dasher was taken into custody early Wednesday, and brought to the spot where the boy's body was found at the edge of a wooded cemetery near the River Des Peres, followed by a trip to the boy's home.
The St. Louis County Justice Center told the paper that Dasher was being held on a 20-hour hold, which means she can be released if charges aren't brought within that timeframe. She hadn't been formally booked, and no mugshot had been taken, a jail official told the Dispatch.

Mother says she overslept
Tyler Dasher was reported missing from his home about 10 miles southwest of St. Louis, around 11 a.m. Tuesday. His mother told police she overslept that morning and discovered him gone from his crib when she awoke.

The toddler's body was discovered by dog-walkers Tuesday afternoon near a cemetery about a mile from his home. The medical examiner who confirmed the body's identity did not immediately determine the cause of death, county police spokesman Rick Eckhard said on Tuesday.

St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch said at a news conference earlier Tuesday that people walking a dog found the body around 3:30 p.m. about a mile from the home.

Tyler's mother and father, who live separately, had both been cooperating with police, Fitch said.

Police told the Post-Dispatch that Tyler's mother and grandmother were the only adults in the house Monday night and Tuesday morning, and that Tyler's father lives elsewhere in the St. Louis area. Police said there was were no signs of a break-in at the home and nothing awry inside.

Nicole Howard, a cousin, told the paper that Dasher was a dedicated parent. "Shelby takes very good care of her son," Howard said. "She loves him."

Police would not discuss the condition of the body. The Post-Dispatch said that the dog walkers, visibly shaken, did not talk to reporters at the crime scene Tuesday afternoon.

Tears for tot
A small cluster of young adults cried and hugged on Tuesday as they watched from the cemetery.

Affton, Mo (KSDK) - Shelby Dasher, the mother of Tyler Dasher, was booked on a 24-hour hold at 2:00 a.m. Wednesday at the county jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, according to a St. Louis County jail supervisor.

Prosecutors have not formally charged Shelby Dasher, 20, with a crime.

In a statement issued just before 6 a.m., St. Louis County police said an arrest has been made in the case, but the person has not yet been formally processed. No other details will be announced until after the prosecuting attorney examines the case.

A person was escorted by investigators to the scene where 13-month-old Tyler Dasher's body was found yesterday and then was transported to St. Louis County Police Headquarters in Clayton.

Police were spotted Wednesday morning leading the person around the crime scene. The person then got into a car with investigators and was driven back to the Dasher home. The person had on a grey hood and was escorted back into the home in Affton. After about 30 minutes, the person was escorted back to the vehicle and drove to Clayton.

Seven family members were interviewed late into the night Tuesday, but the police statement makes no mention of whether the person arrested is a member of Dasher's family.

On Tuesday, police responded to a call of a missing child around 11 a.m. in the 7700 block of Clevedon in Affton.

Dasher was last seen Monday evening before 10 p.m. when his mother put him to bed.

Around 3:30 p.m. citizens out walking found the body of Dasher in a wooded area near River Des Peres Road and Gravois, approximately one mile from the child's home.

The cause of death has not been determined.

There is no known motive for the abduction or homicide at this time.

Anyone with information about the child's death should call the St. Louis County Police Department at 314-889-2341 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS.

Friends and family will hold a vigil and moment of silence in Tyler's honor at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the River Des Peres Greenway at Olde English Road and River Des Peres in Affton.

Rumors are swirling on this one - reading posts at hinky meter - saying child was disabled - inlaws fighting for custody of the child - body of the child had mutilation or disturbing marks - none of these are confirmed - if anyone finds anything like this please post.

Post by Nama Wed Nov 16, 2011 11:53 am

Updated 9:17 a.m.: Tyler's mother, Shelby Dasher, is reportedly the person arrested. More information when it becomes available.
St. Louis County Police announced this morning that they have an individual in custody in connection to yesterday's apparent kidnapping and murder of a 13-month-old Tyler Dasher.
Tyler's 24-year-old father, Joseph E. Ellington, does not live with Tyler and his mother. Court records show that in April his parents were appointed his co-guardians because he is incapacitated or disabled. His only other court record in Missouri came in 2007 when he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of littering.
Shelby Dasher, Tyler's mother, does not show up at all in a records search of Missouri court filings.

As for the arrest this morning, police say they won't make the suspect's identity known until formal charges are filed.

Am I reading this right??? Was Tyler's FATHER incapacitated or disabled??

Antoinette King, booking clerk for the St. Louis County jail, says no charges have been filed against 20-year-old Shelby Dasher of Affton, Mo. The body of her son, Tyler Dasher, was discovered Tuesday afternoon near a cemetery, about a mile from home.

King says Dasher is on a 24-hour hold. The hold is designed to give the police a day to build a case. If no charges are brought in that time, Dasher must be released.

Police say no further information will be released until the prosecutor has reviewed the investigation.

The mother of one-year-old Tyler Dasher, whose body was found hours after he was reported missing, had filed an order of protection against the boy's father.

KSDK reports that Shelby Dasher, 20, filed a restraining order against Joseph Ellington in the fall of 2010. Nevertheless, one month later, she canceled the order.

The local St. Louis news outlet also reports that in Mar. 2011, Ellington's parents attempted to be named his legal guardians claiming he is disabled.

I think it's the father that is "disabled".

Shelby Dasher booked in county jail

Affton, Mo (KSDK) - Shelby Dasher, the mother of Tyler Dasher, was booked on a 24-hour hold at 2:00 a.m. Wednesday at the county jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, according to a St. Louis County jail supervisor.

Prosecutors have not formally charged Shelby Dasher, 20, with a crime. The prosecutor's office said there is an afternoon press conference planned. NewsChannel 5 will carry it live and it will be streamed on ksdk.com.

Emily Rowley who is a close friend of Shelby's said she believes she is innocent and that Tyler was her world.

"She didn't do it," said Rowley. "Until those words come out of her mouth, I have all the faith in her."

"She is very strong, very independent," said Shelby's friend Holly Barton, after hearing of Shelby's arrest. "She would have done anything for Tyler. If she had to go without, that that's what it would have been. She wouldn't have thought twice about it."

In a statement issued just before 6 a.m., St. Louis County police said an arrest has been made in the case, but the person has not yet been formally processed.

After about 30 minutes, the person was escorted back to the vehicle and driven to Clayton.

how little they really know about their friends - how blind they really are to their faults - and see only what the want to see.

NewsChannel 5 has learned the mother of a missing toddler filed an order of protection against the child's father.

The order was filed by Shelby Dasher, mother of 13-month-old Tyler Dasher, against Joseph Ellington in October 2010.

The order stated Ellington could not talk to, stalk, molest, or visit Shelby Dasher.

Dasher canceled the order one month after it was filed.

Post by Nama Wed Nov 16, 2011 1:55 pm

UPDATED at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday with various details throughout.
AFFTON • St. Louis County police have arrested the mother of 13-month-old Tyler Daniel Dasher in the boy's death.
Police released no information on who was arrested, but jail officials confirm that Tyler's mother -- 20-year-old Shelby A. Dasher -- was being held at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Louis County Justice Center.
A police source says authorities believe Shelby Dasher killed her son after she "became very, very angry." It was unclear what triggered her rage.
Dasher was taken into custody early Wednesday, and brought to the spot where the boy's body was found at the edge of a wooded cemetery near the River Des Peres. She and authorities then went to the boy's home.
The St. Louis County Justice Center said Dasher was being held on what's called a 20-hour hold, which means she can be released if charges aren't brought within that timeframe.
Prosecuting Attorney Robert P. McCulloch's office has told jail officials not to release the woman's booking photo.
Police refused to release details on the arrest, or even say if their suspect was a man or a woman. Police said details would come once the prosecutor has a chance to review the case. Police are calling the death a homicide.
Dasher had told police on Tuesday that she woke up to find the boy missing from her home in Affton, in the 7700 block of Clevedon Street. The boy's body was discovered at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday just blocks from the house by people taking a walk at the edge of the New St. Marcus Cemetery near River Des Peres Boulevard.
Police worked overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning. Those interviewed included the boy's mother, father and grandmother.
Police said Shelby Dasher told them she put Tyler to bed about 10:30 p.m. Monday and overslept Tuesday morning. She reported the child missing to police after she awoke about 11 a.m.
The break came Wednesday morning. At 5:42 a.m. Wednesday, St. Louis County police issued a news release, saying that one person has been taken into custody. Police said that person hasn't been formally booked and gave no further details on the suspect.
By 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, police were taking Shelby Dasher in an unmarked police car to the spot where the boy's body was found at the edge of a wooded cemetery near the River Des Peres. They then went to the home in Affton for a brief visit. Television news helicopters hovered overhead, even tracking the police car as it headed to Clayton where the jail is located.
Officials have not released how the boy died.
Police said Tyler's mother and grandmother were the only adults in the house Monday night and Tuesday morning, and that Tyler's father lives elsewhere in the St. Louis area. Police said there was were no signs of a break-in at the home and nothing awry inside.
The boy's father is Joe Ellington. In April, Ellington's parents were appointed his co-guardians by a St. Louis County Circuit Court judge because he was judged to be incapacitated or disabled.
Police would not discuss the condition of the body. The dog walkers, visibly shaken, did not talk to reporters at the crime scene Tuesday afternoon.
St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch told reporters on Tuesday that whoever is responsible for the child's death must be "a sick person."
"Anyone that would take a child into a wooded area like this needs to be dealt with severely by the criminal justice system," he said.
Nicole Howard, a cousin, described Shelby Dasher as a dedicated parent.
"Shelby takes very good care of her son," Howard said. "She loves him."
St. Louis County police issued a child abduction alert Tuesday afternoon for Tyler, indicating they feared a stranger had taken him or that he was in immediate danger. Soon after, police began searching the Affton area for the missing toddler.
River Des Peres Boulevard was closed to traffic at Gravois Avenue as police investigated. Crime scene tape cordoned off some of the cemetery's headstones.
A witness told police he saw a man walking with a child wrapped in a blue blanket along a street near Rogers Middle School, about a mile from the Dasher home, about 12:30 p.m. Authorities said Wednesday that they believe that report had nothing to do with Tyler's case.
Police showed a blue blanket with images of stars, footballs, baseballs and soccer balls on it that was identical to one that vanished with Tyler. They also showed a set of pajamas to reporters Tuesday afternoon.
Police closed Clevedon Street between Seth and Third avenues and searched the area using dogs, a helicopter and a tactical team.
The block is off River Des Peres Boulevard along the River Des Peres near the St. Louis city and county border.
Several relatives of the boy arrived at the scene Tuesday afternoon crying and consoling each other. Family members who came to the Dasher home said they were not aware of any problems between Tyler's parents.
Dasher had a rocky relationship with the boy's father, as was alleged in court documents filed in St. Louis County.
On Oct. 13, 2010, when Tyler was two weeks old, Shelby Dasher sought an order of protection against Joseph Ellington in St. Louis County Circuit Court. The day before, Dasher said, Ellington had come to the home on Clevedon and pushed Dasher to the ground in a quarrel.
On Oct. 25, a judge ordered Ellington stay away from Dasher. However, on Nov. 22, the order was dismissed at Dasher's request.
On her petition, Dasher said she and Ellington were both unemployed.

St. Louis County prosecutor Bob McCulloch said Wednesday that Shelby Dasher is charged with second-degree murder in the death of her son, Tyler. She was arrested early Wednesday and is being held on $500,000 cash bond.
McCulloch says Dasher admitted to police that she repeatedly struck her son because he was crying and "wouldn't lay down, wouldn't go back to sleep." He says she told police she disposed of the body.

Any idea where her mother was? They said that they were both home at night and in the morning. Did the grandmother witness this or help cover it up? So much for the eyewitnesses of a man carrying a baby.

Post by Nama Wed Nov 16, 2011 5:31 pm

The mother of a dead 1-year-old Missouri boy told police she struck him repeatedly when he wouldn't stop crying or lie down, then dumped his body near a nearby graveyard, St. Louis County, Mo., prosecutor Bob McCulloch said at a news conference this afternoon.

Shelby Dasher, 20, is being charged with second-degree murder, and is being held on a $500,000 cash bond, McCulloch said. She is on suicide watch, he said.

The medical examiner reported the cause of Dasher's son, Tyler Dasher, was multiple blunt force trauma to the head, McCulloch said. No objects seem to have been used, he added.

Shelby Dasher told police she had been out part of the night and early morning before the incident. Her mother was at home all night but was not involved in the events leading up to Tyler's death, and no one else was involved, McCulloch said.

The medical examiner found no signs of past abuse, McCulloch said, adding that this was the exception to the rule in such cases.

Tyler and Shelby didn't sleep in the same room, McCulloch said.

Asked why he was charging Dasher with second-degree murder, not first-degree murder, McCulloch cited the lack of deliberation.

"It's the difference between hot-blooded and cold-blooded murder," he said.

McCulloch said the lesson for the community was, "Raising a child can be frustrating. There are a myriad of ways to deal with that. This isn't one of them."

After McCulloch spoke, St. Louis police chief Tim Fitch said the skills of his investigators and interrogators led Dasher to surrender information that led to the charge.

He said one of the first investigators on the scene recognized "rather quickly, thanks to his experience in cases of child abuse, this wasn't a missing or abducted child."

Tyler Dasher's body was found Tuesday near a cemetery about a mile from the Dasher home.

At approximately 11 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a call reporting a missing child in southwestern St. Louis, police said. The child was last seen at 10 p.m. Monday, police said.

On Tuesday, Shelby Dasher told officers she overslept that morning, saw Tyler was missing and called the cops, according to the Post-Dispatch.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, people walking their dog found a dead child in a wooded area about one mile from the Dasher home, police said. A county medical examiner confirmed it was Tyler, but did not determine cause of death, police said.

Police said they found no signs of a break-in at the Dasher home, where Shelby lived with her mother and son, the paper added.

Tyler's father, Joe Ellington, lives elsewhere. His parents are his co-guardians because Ellington was judged incapacitated or disabled, the Post-Dispatch said.
