The mother of a missing teenage girl fears her daughter was having a relationship with an older man she met on the internet.

Kyrsten Roth, 15, disappeared from her Oregon home in the middle of the night over a week ago and police continue to search for her but new details have emerged that paint a troubling picture.

Kyrsten is thought to have run away with a man in his twenties who lives in California, with phone records showing a number of late-night phone calls between the two.

Missing: Kyrsten Roth, 15, went missing from her Gresham, Oregon home in the early hours of December 4 and is believed to be with an older man

'My son is the one who told me that the guy was in his twenties and she’s been talking to him for a while so he knew. He happened to see this person over a webcam,' Kyrsten's mother Michelle Roth told local news station KATU.

When Kyrsten's younger brother told Mrs Roth about this mystery man, clues started linking up in a scary way. Mrs Roth remembered Kyrsten saying that she liked a boy, but assumed that it was a boy from her school in Gresham, Oregon.

'We want to meet him we want to know who you're talking to we want to know who you're hanging out with,' Mrs Roth recounted saying to Kyrsten.

'I just thought it was a kid from here and it wasn’t,' she continued.

'Young and naive': Kyrsten is thought to have met the man through an anime or social networking site and begun a virtual relationship now turned physical.

Kyrsten was last seen by her mother when she kissed her goodnight around 11pm on December 3. The next morning, Kyrsten was gone.

In order to put a more accurate time on the disappearance, Mrs Roth went back over phone records, finding multiple calls to a Susanville, California number. the last call took place at 2.44am on December 4, so authorities now believe Kyrsten went missing between 2.55am and 6am on December 4.

'It's the worst thing that anybody can imagine,' Mrs Roth said.

'I'm shaking inside. I feel sick to my stomach with worry for my daughter.'

Heartbroken: Michelle Roth was visibly upset when being interviewed about her missing daughter and she just wants to know she is alright

Close bond: Mrs Roth has put family photos, like one here of she and Kyrsten at age 3 and her younger brother, on Facebook to help the search

The phone records show that calls had been placed to that Susanville, California number for months now. Police believe she met the man through a social networking site or anime site, though they have not released the names of any specific sites.

'She's very young and naive,' Mrs Roth said.

'She's just a little girl who's trying to figure out life, and I feel like she's been greatly influenced by somebody who saw an easy target.'

Continued search: Police said there have been several sightings of Kyrsten in the greater Portland, Oregon area since the day of her disappearance

'The one thing that would make me feel so much better is to hear her voice or to get a message from her that says she's okay,' Mrs Roth said.

'Bring home my daughter, bring her home.'

GRESHAM, Ore. -- The family of a 15-year-old Gresham girl missing for nearly two weeks announced she was found safe Thursday in a Portland home.

Kyrsten Roth had last been seen at her home December 3, according to family spokeswoman Michelle Bart. The family accused 20-year-old Andrew Calvert of posing as a teenager in a chat room to make contact with her, and then driving from Susanville, California, to meet her.

Roth was found sleeping in the back room of a Portland-area home Thursday. Bart said the room had recently been rented by Calvert.

Roth had not been harmed and told detectives she had chosen to be there, according to Sgt. Claudio Grandjean with Gresham police.

"Whether she left on her own or was taken against her will is not the issue here," her mother said in a statement Thursday. "The issue is a 20-year-old man picked up my daughter in the middle of the night and for whatever reasons did not feel compelled to have her call home or return her home."

Susanville police were also involved in the investigation.

Dec. 15, 2011 — A 15-year-old Oregon girl, who was last seen Dec. 3 and may have been talking with a former Susanville resident she met online, was found sleeping in an apartment bedroom in Portland, Ore.

The Gresham Police Department issued a press release reporting Kyrsten Roth was found alone at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15 at an apartment in the 6200 block of NE Multnomah in Portland.

After being taken into custody without incident, Roth said she was there of her own volition and had not been harmed in any way.

Detectives developed a lead on a possible location for the person they believed she was with, Andrew Calvert, 20, who had recently moved to the apartment.

According to Claudio Grandjean, a sergeant with the Gresham Police Department, a phone number allegedly belonging to Calvert had a 530 area code.

At the request of Roth’s family, the Susanville Police Department (SPD) assisted with the case. SPD Captain Tom Downing said several residences were checked in the area and it was believed the person the phone number allegedly belonged to no longer lives in Lassen County

Calvert had reported a burglary at the apartment Dec. 9, but the information on the burglary was not entered until Dec. 13.

When detectives searched for Calvert’s name Dec. 11 and Dec. 12, the burglary report had not yet been entered.

They discovered the name and number again Thursday, Dec. 15 and found the report.

Detectives checked the report and learned that Calvert and Roth had rented a room in the apartment from the occupant.

Calvert was not at the apartment at the time officers arrived on scene, but detectives plan to interview him later.

Michelle Bart, the spokeswoman for the Roth family and the Region Chair for the Northwest Coalition Against Trafficking, said Roth’s mother and father are waiting to be reunited with their daughter.

Roth was reported missing Dec. 3 and had left the house with just a jacket and nothing else appeared to have been taken. Grandjean and Bart both said people reported seeing the girl at a café across from Gresham High School on Dec. 7.

After her disappearance, a TextNoMore issued a missing poster and press release that alleged 15 calls were made from a California cell phone number from 4:59 a.m. Dec, 3 to 2:55 a.m. Dec. 4.

Prior to the last call, Roth allegedly spoke to the person on the other end for more than 100 minutes.

Calls allegedly began Oct. 28 and ended Dec. 4 at 2:55 a.m. Bart said the phone was disconnected Dec. 12.

She said it is believed Roth may have connected with the man through Xbox LIVE.

Missing girl found safe
But the investigation reveals she may have misled her online companion to believe she was a legal adult
BY MARA STINE
The Gresham Outlook, Dec 16, 2011

A missing 15-year-old Gresham girl, found safe after reportedly running away with a 20-year-old man, claimed to be an adult on her social media sites, police say.

Police have questioned the girl, Kyrsten Roth, and the man she met online, Andrew Calvert, who is originally from Susanville, Calif., but have not arrested him, said Sgt. Claudio Grandjean, Gresham police spokesman.

Instead, the case will be forwarded to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine which, if any, charges to pursue.

“It’s not a clear-cut prosecutable case,” Grandjean said.

When Roth disappeared from her home during the early morning hours of Sunday, Dec. 4, her mother feared the girl had been lured away by an older man she met online. Mother Michelle Roth combed through phone records and discovered frequent calls to a number in Susanville — calls that stopped the day the girl vanished.

The worried mother posted fliers asking for help finding the girl, and teamed with media strategist Michelle Bart, (friends of the Anthony's) who launched a national media blitz on the girl’s disappearance, including coverage by the Huffington Post and ABC News.

Meanwhile, Gresham police considered the girl a runaway who was not endangered, which outraged her mother.

A friend of the girl told police she ran into her at a café across the street from Gresham High School on Wednesday, Dec. 7. The girl reportedly gave the friend a phone number that she could be reached at — the same number listed on those phone records.

But when detectives called the number, it had been disconnected.

Break in the case
Police got a break in the case when Detective Tony Cobb discovered a Portland burglary report containing the person of interest’s name and phone number. Although the report, which listed the man’s cell phone as stolen, was filed on Dec. 9, it wasn’t processed until Dec. 13.

Detectives went to the address listed in the report — in the 6200 block of Northeast Multnomah Street in Portland’s Rose City Park neighborhood — and found the girl safe and sound.

Roth and Calvert, 20, had posted a craigslist ad seeking a room for rent and two people who lived in the apartment agreed to let them move in. Roth reportedly told her new roommates that she was 18.

“They even said (Calvert) was from Australia and she was from the U.K., and they were both talking with accents,” Grandjean said.

When police arrived, Roth was sleeping alone in a bedroom and Calvert was at work, reportedly at a Gresham call center.

Police interviewed the man. He has no criminal record, and it isn’t clear whether he came to Oregon solely to meet the girl, Grandjean said.

But detectives say he was devastated to learn Roth was 15. As proof, he showed them the girl’s social network sites in which she claimed to be 18 or older.

Site says she’s 20
For example, on one site she claimed to be a 20-year-old Mt. Hood Community College student with a house in Northern California. Her accompanying profile picture shows the heavily made-up girl with carefully styled hair kissing the camera, Grandjean said.

The sites reveal a flirtatious and fictional online persona.

“She presented as if she was older,” Grandjean said, adding that the young woman in the profile photos looked nothing like the teen pictures on the flier her mother circulated.

“I didn’t even recognize her,” he said.

Bart, Roth’s mother’s spokeswoman, said mom is thrilled that her daughter is now home but wants to make sure Gresham police hold Calvert accountable.

She doesn’t buy his account that he didn’t know how old Roth was.

“As chair of the Northwest Coalition Against Trafficking, that’s the excuse they all use,” Bart said. “If the guy has no criminal history, maybe it’s because he hasn’t been caught.”

Bart went on to say that Calvert knew Roth’s age, but declined to comment on how.

The insistence that the young man must be held criminally liable and that the girl was lured away from home is alarming to Grandjean.

“It’s just as important to us as police officers to clear people as it is to convict people,” he said. “There’s bad behavior and decisions on both of their parts.”

Based on police interviews, Roth “wanted to run away, and it’s clear she wanted to run away with Andrew,” Grandjean said. “The online talks between them that we’re looking at are more kids in love than ‘To Catch A Predator.’ ”

I would ground this girl and take away her cell, internet and any other privileges she has. It's So important that parent's Monitor their kids online. If I had children this age (Thank Goodness they are grown!!) I would NOT allow them to have internet on their cell phone and I would Not allow them to have a laptop. They would have a desk top and it would be in the kitchen or den or livingroom where I can monitor what they are doing. Also, I would put a thingy on it so they cannot go to FB or media sites like X-Box or play any virtual games online. MOO.

Kyrsten Roth, 15 Reported Missing, Found With Andrew Culver, 20
Published by Zennie Abraham in Uncategorized on December 16th, 2011

Andrew Culver, 20, can’t find a woman of 19 or even, er, 27 years old, so he had to arrange a hook up with 15-year-old Kyrsten Roth, whom he met via the Internet. Kyrsten Roth, eager to escape her parents and become an adult, went out to meet this young man, and turned up missing December 4th, 2011.

Her parents were freaking out.

According to The Portland Tribune, the pair was found today.

Kyrsten Roth disappeared during the early morning hours of Sunday, Dec. 4. Her mother, Michelle Roth, combed through phone records and discovered her daughter had been frequently talking to a man from Susanville, Calif., since late October…During the nearly 24 hours before the girl’s disappearance, the home’s phone bill shows 15 calls to and from a California phone number, including a 100-minute conversation.

It’s obvious Mr. Culver was thinking with the wrong head, but a 15-year-old girl? The Portland Tribune article says that charges might be filed if detectives could prove they had sex. Well, good luck with that, but anyone reading this knows the two didn’t come to meetup for coffee.

Well, if 27-year-old Lindsey Huff can take out 16-year-old Parker MacDonald as his Homecoming date, someone out there thinks Andrew Carver’s AOK to be with 15-year-old Kyrsten Roth.

Crazy, man.

Stay tuned
