Redding, Calif.
A Shasta County woman accused of neglecting her newborn daughter until she died is headed for a murder trial.

Jessica Bradford waived her right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday, which moves the case directly to the trial phase.

Bradford has pleaded not guilty to murder and child abuse charges.

Authorities say the 23-year-old gave birth in September without telling anyone she was pregnant and hid the child in a dorm room at the Christian boarding school where she lived and worked. The infant died after four days without food or care.

Authorities say Bradford kept the body for months in the dorm room, where another staff member discovered it last month.

The Record Searchlight of Redding ( [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] reports that Bradford remains jailed on $1 million bail. She's due back in court on Jan. 3.

Young Woman Accused Of Murdering Baby Waives Preliminary Hearing
The young Whitmore woman accused of murdering her four-day old baby and hiding the mummified body waived her right to a preliminary hearing Thursday morning.

Twenty-three year-old Jessica Bradford chose to waive her hearing. She is scheduled to reappear in court Jan. 3 for possibly a date for a trial.

Bradford has pled not guilty to charges of murder, and child abuse.

Bradford was arrested on Nov 7, at the Julian Youth Academy in Whitmore after the body of a mummified baby was found in her laundry basket. Bradford worked at the Christian school for troubled teens. She told Shasta County Sheriff deputies she had the secret baby on September 19 under a deck at the school so no one would hear. She told deputies the baby was a stillborn, but she later admitted the baby girl lived for four days. Bradford told the deputies she hid the body in different parts of the school and that she never named the baby because she did not want to become attached.
Bradford is being held at the Shasta County jail. Her bail is set at $1 million.

A 24-year-old woman accused of starving her 4-day-old baby to death saw her May 14 trial put off Monday until June 11, 2013

Jessica Nicole Bradford was arrested Nov. 7, 2011, a day after her baby’s mummified body was found at the Julian Youth Academy in Whitmore, sheriff’s deputies have said.

Bradford worked as a staff member at the private Christian boarding school for troubled teens.

Bradford, who remains in Shasta County jail in lieu of $1 million bail, is charged with murder, child abuse and a related enhancement in connection with her infant daughter’s death.

The trial’s continuance was ordered after Senior Deputy District Attorney Kelly Kafel said she expects to begin another murder trial later this month and does not believe she’ll be ready to prosecute the woman by the May 14 trial date.

Meanwhile, San Diego defense attorney Jonathan Jordan, who represents Bradford, has filed a writ with the state Supreme Court seeking the recusal of Superior Court Judge Cara Beatty after an appellate court earlier denied his request.

Jordan stressed Monday that although he does not believe his client won’t get a fair trial by Beatty, he said he has concerns about her lack of experience presiding over a murder trial.

Bradford faces life in prison if tried and convicted of the charges against her.

Jessica Bradford Heads To Murder Trial June 11, 2013, For Neglect That Led To The Death of Her Newborn Baby Empty Safely Surrendering A Newborn

Post by NiteSpinR Wed May 28, 2014 3:28 pm

REDDING, Calif. -

Jessica Bradford, the mother accused of killing her newborn baby by withholding nourishment, admitted to investigators she had planned on giving the baby up to a safe surrender site, before changing her mind.

Bradford told investigators she Googled ‘safe surrender sites’ on her cell phone. She said she even chose a Chico hospital. She put the baby in the car, and started driving there, before turning around. She told investigators she didn’t want anyone to know that she’d given birth.

"There's no questions asked,” explained Mike O’Dell, emergency department working director for Mercy Medical Center in Redding.

The intent of the Safely Surrendered Baby Law is to keep the identity of the child’s guardian completely confidential.

"This option gives people a chance to make sure their baby has a shot at a good future," said O’Dell.

There are forms that a mother or guardian can choose to fill out. But, O’Dell explained, the sole purpose of those is to get medical information on the baby’s health. No information on the parent is required.

The California state law was passed in 2001, and signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger in 2006 to prevent any possible harm or death to newborns.

"No harm will come to the child. This [is for] a parent who feels, perhaps, they're not capable of caring for a child at this point in their life. It gives the baby an opportunity to be placed with parents that are capable to love and take care of the child," explained O’Dell.

Under the Safely Surrendered Baby Law, a parent can safely surrender their baby confidentially, without the fear of prosecution within 72 hours of birth.

A guardian also has the option to change their mind if they feel they can take care of the baby.

"There have been cases where folks have surrendered their baby safely and they had a little time to think it over and maybe discovered they did have the resources to care for it. So in that case, they have 14 days to come reclaim their child," said O’Dell.

A baby being safely surrendered by their guardian can be taken to designated hospitals and fire stations all across the state.

All 50 states in the U.S. have similar laws.

She killed her baby in 2010 (?) and was arrested in 2011 after her daughters mummified! remains were found. By now I'm sure she's been asked plenty of times, why she didn't safely surrender her child instead of starving it to death.
If she had done an internet search (which we can all assume is a lie) then why did she go through all the trouble of moving the newborn around from place to place until it died?
She's claiming she looked into other alternatives in an attempt to make herself look and feel better about what she did.
