DNA Identifies Nelson Bernard Clifford As Serial Rape Suspect In Baltimore
January 6, 2012
Investigators identified a serial rape suspect through DNA evidence taken from a T-shirt, a comforter and a vodka bottle, Baltimore City police said Friday.
Police arrested Nelson Bernard Clifford, 33, on Dec. 8 and charged him with numerous counts of rape, attempted rape, sex offense, burglary, theft, assault and failing to register as a sex offender, police said.
Investigators said the charges stem from the rapes of two women and an attempted rape of another woman in November and December.
Investigators described Clifford as a "predator."
"Nelson Clifford has been public enemy No. 1 for sex offense investigators for a number of years," city police Maj. Martin Bartness said.
The first incident involved a 29-year-old mother who was raped on Nov. 10 in the 3700 block of Greenmount Avenue in north Baltimore while her children were in a room next door, police said. The victim described being raped by a man with "long fingernails" who threatened to hurt her and her children if she didn't do what he wanted, police said.
The second took place Nov. 13 less than 3 miles away in the 700 block of Lennox Street in northwest Baltimore, where a 27-year-old woman was sleeping when the assailant entered her bedroom and raped her at knifepoint, threatening to "slash her face," police said.
Clifford, who has a criminal record dating back to 1997, was already in the DNA database after a previous sexual assault conviction.
"We were very confident prior to the DNA hits that Nelson Clifford was the person responsible for these incidents," Bartness said.
As Clifford sat in jail, forensic experts said they recovered DNA from a vodka bottle that they said links him to a third case, an attempted rape on Dec. 3 at about 6 a.m. in the 900 block of Harlem Avenue. The victim in that case said the attacker threatened her with an ice pick, but she started screaming and he left.
Investigators said they believe Clifford's modus operandi is to break into a home in the early-morning hours while victims are sleeping. Investigators said they are concerned there could be more victims.
"He catches them unaware," Bartness said. "He typically blindfolds them with clothing, rapes and sexually assaults them."
In 1997, Clifford was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a sexual offense.

Re: DNA Identifies Nelson Bernard Clifford As Serial Rape Suspect In Baltimore
Nelson Bernard Clifford is charged with a home invasion rape on November 10, 2011 in the 3700 block of Greenmount Avenue and with another home invasion rape on November 13, 2011 in Reservoir Hill. In each instance, he faces multiple counts of rape and sex offenses as well as first degree burglary. According to news reports in the Sun, he was identified from DNA. In addition, he is charged with failure to register as a sex offender (based on an earlier conviction for a second degree sex offense) and with an attempted home invasion rape on December 3, 2011. His proceedings were postponed to Thursday, July 11 at 9:30 in room 203 Courthouse West, which is the courtroom of Judge Marcus Shar. According to Doug, it was stated in reception court that Clifford was in part 20 (Judge Shar), possibly for a motions hearing, and all cases were postponed as just noted. I think that this means that at least some part of the charges facing Clifford will be tried before Judge Shar.
