From left, Derek Wood, William Brownlee and Donald Holland Jr. appeared in Baldwin County Circuit Judge Jody Bishop's courtroom on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, on sex-crime charges.
BAY MINETTE, Alabama -- Missing teen Brittney Wood's brother, cousin and a friend of the family were in Circuit Court Judge Jody Bishop's courtroom on Thursday, according to a report by Fox 10 News.
All are facing sex-crime charges, and during the proceeding, prosecutors said the 3 men had a sexual relationship with an underage Fairhope girl, the report said.
Derek Wood, Donald Holland Jr. and William Brownlee were in the courtroom as a Sheriff's investigator detailed how, in January 2011, the girl "told deputies that in January 2011, Holland touched her inappropriately and had sex with her. She was 12 years old at the time of the alleged incident.
"Prosecutors said the other 2 co-defendants had sex with her as well," the report said.
The judge rescheduled Brownlee's hearing to August 30, and set a bond of $30,000. Wood's bond was set at $20,000. And if they make bond, both men would be required to wear an ankle monitor. Holland, Jr., is currently out on bond.
The hearing was one more step in a bizarre saga that includes multiple investigations across Mobile and Baldwin counties.
Once described as Brittney Wood's "protector," brother Derek Wood, 21, was a spokesperson for their family after his sister's disappearance on May 30, but he was arrested on July 17 and charged with second-degree rape and sodomy.
Brownlee, a friend of the elder Holland, was arrested
on July 22 and charged with second-degree sodomy and sex abuse.
Those arrests followed the June 19 arrest of two of Brittany and Derek's uncles — Randall "Scott" Wood and Dustin Kent. Both were charged with sodomy and sexual abuse, while Scott Wood was also charged with incest.
Kent, 36, would be arrested twice more after that: again by Baldwin County deputies in July -- charged with incest, rape and sexual abuse involving a second victim; and by Mobile police on Aug. 2 -- charged with first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy.
Donald Holland, Jr., was arrested on July 17 and charged with rape, sexual abuse and incest. And according to Baldwin County investigators, his father, Donnie Holland, was suspected of similar crimes, but killed himself before he could be questioned or arrested.
Donnie Holland, Brittney Wood's uncle, shot himself on June 1 in an empty lot in the Marlow community in south Baldwin County. Brittney's family maintains that Holland was the last person to see the 19-year-old mother.
It's been more than two months since she went missing, and her family is offering a $1,500 reward for information.

Wendy Wood Holland
BAY MINETTE, Alabama -- A sixth arrest has been made by Baldwin County sheriff’s deputies in conjunction with an ongoing sex-abuse investigation into family members, and one family friend, of missing Mobile teen Brittney Wood.
According to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Maj. Anthony Lowery, 33-year-old Wendy Wood Holland, of the Marlow community in south Baldwin County, was arrested Wednesday and charged with one count of endangering the welfare of a child, a class-A misdemeanor.
She was booked into the Baldwin County Correctional Facility, and bail was set at $1,000.
Holland is the sister of Brittney Wood’s mother, Chessie Wood, and wife of Donnie Holland, who killed himself near his home just days after Brittney disappeared on May 30. The 19-year-old mother has not been heard from in nearly three months, and her family maintains that Donnie Holland was the last person to see her prior to her disappearance.
Investigators have previously confirmed that, at the time of his death, Donnie Holland was being investigated as part of the sex-abuse investigation, but had not been interviewed.
Although Lowery said his department won’t comment on the ongoing investigation, he did confirm that Wendy Holland was identified as part of the "progression of the investigation" on Wednesday, then targeted, interviewed and arrested.
Her two grade-school-age children were turned over to the Department of Human Resources on Wednesday, he said.
To date, four members of Holland’s family have been arrested as part of the investigation into sex-abuse charges: her brother Randall "Scott" Wood; brother-in-law Dustin Kent, married to her twin sister Mendy; her stepson Donald Holland Jr.; and her nephew Derek Wood, Brittney Wood’s brother. (Confused???)
William Brownlee, described by family members as a friend of Donnie Holland, was also arrested on charges related to sex crimes.
Dustin Kent also has been arrested by Mobile police on similar charges in Mobile County, although investigators on both sides of the bay continue to maintain that the Brittney Wood missing person case is not related to the ongoing investigation into sex crimes involving her family members.

BAY MINETTE, Ala. (WALA) - A family friend of missing teenager Brittney Wood was in court Thursday morning. William Brownlee is one of five men arrested for allegedly having sexual relations with an underage Fairhope girl.
Brownlee waived his preliminary hearing. The case is now headed to a grand jury.
The other four suspects are Wood’s brother, cousin, and two uncles. They face the same charge as Brownlee.
Wood’s aunt, Wendy Holland, was arrested last week and charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Investigators say she knew about the sexual encounters with several young victims and didn’t report it.
Holland’s husband, Donald, was also a suspect in the case but he shot and killed himself days after Brittney Wood disappeared.

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) - The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office and the Mobile Police Department are currently searching for 22-year-old Derek Wood . Wood has been out on bond since his earlier arrest on second degree sodomy charges.
Authorities said Wood was due to report in to deputies this morning in Bay Minette and failed to appear. They said Wood’s Court ordered ankle monitor and GPS tracking device showed Wood to be located at his home.
Officials said deputies traveled to Wood’s address and found him in a car with a female driver. They said as deputies attempted stop the car, a short pursuit resulted in the suspects’ car wrecking and Wood fleeing on foot.
Deputies later located Wood’s assigned ankle monitor cut off in the weeds.
The Baldwin County District Court has ordered Wood’s bond immediately revoked.
He's the brother of Brittney Wood, who has been missing since may and has been the subject of numerous fruitless searches. She was last seen May 30 when family members say she was going to visit her uncle in the Styx River Area.

Testimony: Mobile man raped daughter while her father watched

Dustin Kent ... accused of raping niece.
MOBILE, Alabama – The uncle of missing Mobile teenager Brittney Wood forced a different relative to have sex four years ago while the victim’s father watched, a police detective testified today.
Sgt. Scott Congleton of the Mobile Police Department, testified at a preliminary hearing in Mobile County District Court that the sexual abuse occurred in 2008 when the girl was 13 years old. Congelton testified that the victim, now 17, did not come forward until the death of her father this summer and a subsequent high-profile search for Wood.
“She was very credible,” Congleton testified.
Mobile County District Judge George Hardesty determined that prosecutors had enough evidence to send first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy charges against Dustin Alton Kent to a grand jury. He allowed Kent 36, to remain free on bail but ordered that he have no contact with the victim or children younger than 16 except for immediate relatives.
Kent also faces sodomy and sexual abuse charges in Baldwin County. Authorities there allege that he molested multiple victims, including the niece from the Mobile County case. Another uncle, Randall Wood, also faces charges in both jurisdictions.
Police have downplayed any connection between the disappearance of Wood and criminal charges that since have been filed against six relatives or family friends. Assistant District Attorney Nicki Patterson said today that the matter remains under investigation.
Kent’s lawyer, John Beck, said the charges against his client and Wood’s disappearance are unrelated.
“I know there’s been a lot of speculation. My client had absolutely no involvement in that case at all,” he said after the hearing.
Congleton recounted the victim’s harrowing account of the 2008 incident. She told investigators that it occurred in September or October of that year, the detective said.
He testified that the girl’s father, Donnie Holland, picked up his daughter and told her they would go to a pet store to buy a hamster. Instead, Congleton said, Holland drove to Kent’s workplace. The three of them then went to Shipyard Road near Rangeline Road off Interstate 10.
They went to an industrial park that never was developed and, Congleton testified, Holland turned onto a dark trail at dusk. During the ride, he testified, the girl had a headache, and Kent was rubbing her head. He started to kiss the girl, but she pulled away, the detective testified.
After the Chevrolet Tahoe came to a stop, Kent took the girl’s clothes off, performed oral sex on her and then raped her, Congleton testified. He said that Holland watched the entire time.
“She kept telling him to stop. He did not,” he testified.
During cross-examination, Congleton testified that the victim confided in the defendant’s sister but no one else. Beck asked about other accusations that the girl made against other family members, but Hardesty ruled that such questions were improper under Alabama’s rape shield law.
In an interview, Beck declined to discuss his line of questioning. “I’m just trying to gather information now,” he said.
Wood, the mother of a 2-year-old girl, disappeared May 30 after saying that she planned to visit her uncle, Donnie Holland, in Baldwin County.
Holland fatally shot himself in the head June 1 in the Styx River area in Baldwin County, authorities said.
At the time of Holland’s death, Congleton testified, he was under investigation for molestation but had not been charged.

Dustin Alton Kent
Police say Dustin Alton Kent raped his niece, then 13, in 2008. The girl’s father, who committed suicide in June, allegedly said he’d take her to the pet store and instead picked up Kent, whom he is said to have watched rape his daughter.
An Alabama man suspected of being part of a pedophile ring allegedly raped his 13-year-old niece – while her father watched.

Donnie Holland
Dustin Alton Kent sexually assaulted the teenager after the girl’s dad, Donnie Holland, drove them to a secluded trail in 2008, a police officer testified at Kent’s trial.
Both Kent and Holland are suspected of being part of an incestuous pedophile ring that police say may be connected to the disappearance of their 19-year-old niece Brittney Wood, who vanished more than four months ago.
"From the evidence I have seen, this is sort of a collection of pedophiles,” Assistant District Attorney Nicki Patterson told NBC affiliate WPMI.
Kent's attorney insisted there was no link between the rape charges against Kent and Wood’s disappearance.
Donnie Holland’s missing niece, 19-year-old Brittney Wood, said she intended to visit him before she disappeared on May 30.
"I know there's been a lot of speculation,” John Beck said. “My client had absolutely no involvement in that case at all.”
But cops say Wood, the mother of a 2-year-old girl, told people she was planning to visit Holland before she vanished on May 30. And several of Wood's relatives, including her own brother, have been charged with incest and rape.
Kent was finally charged with first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy in connection with the alleged attack on his niece after Holland killed himself with a bullet to the head – and his daughter told her tale of being violated in front of her father’s eyes to police, the Mobile Register newspaper reported.
Kent is currently free on bail and has been forbidden from having any contact with his accuser or the children of any other relatives. He is also charged preying on other children in another Alabama county. Authorities say he molested multiple victims This :pervert: is a danger to society. He should NOT be out on bail. Period.

MOBILE, Alabama – A Mobile County judge this morning denied a request by prosecutors to revoke bail for a man accused of raping of his niece.
Authorities arrested Dustin Alton Kent last week after an electronic monitoring device he was wearing indicated that he left his home without permission on four consecutive days. His attorney claimed the defendant was the victim of a malfunctioning Global Positioning System device.
“He’s a threat to the community,” Mobile County Assistant District Attorney Kristy Dugan said in court. “He’s dangerous, which is why he was put on electronic monitoring in the first place.”
Kent is the uncle of missing teenager Brittney Wood, who disappearance earlier this year garnered widespread attention.
Authorities have not accused Kent, 36, of having anything to do with Wood’s disappearance. But he is one of a half-dozen of her relatives or family friends who subsequently have been charged with molesting young children.
Kent had been on bail under the condition that he remain at home except to visit a doctor, his lawyer, church or court. He must get approval from the Mobile County Community Corrections program before leaving the home.
District Judge George Hardesty set Kent free and ordered him to follow the same conditions of bail, which includes having no contact with the alleged victim or other minors, except for immediate relatives. He first made sure that authorities had no allegations that Kent had violated the no-contact order.
“I don’t want to see you down here again on bond,” the judge said.
Detective Doug Scarborough, who runs the electronic monitoring program, testified that GPS equipment indicated that Kent left his house and went into the street or a neighbor’s property on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of last week.
“Every time I talked to him, he’s said he’s inside the house and never left,” Scarborough testified.
On cross-examination, Scarborough acknowledged that the alleged violations occurred in the wee hours of the morning and that the monitoring equipment indicated that the defendant never strayed more than 100 to 150 feet from the safe zone.
Defense attorney John Beck said his client has had trouble with the GPS device in the past and has been told to wait to report it in the morning if problems arise in the middle of the night.
“Mr. Kent absolutely, categorically denies leaving his house,” Beck told the judge.
Beck said his client’s wife was prepared to testify that her husband has muscular dystrophy and does not get up in the middle of the night. A woman who lives in a trailer home where the GPS device indicated that Kent went also would testify that he never was there, the attorney said.
“I have yet to see a piece of technology that is perfect,” he said.
Beck said outside the courtroom that he believes his client has undergone greater scrutiny because of the nature of the charges and the media attention they have attracted.
A Mobile police investigator testified at a preliminary hearing last week that Kent’s niece recently reported that her uncle raped her four years ago while her father watched. Authorities say the victim came forward after the father, Donnie Holland, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at about the same time that Brittney Wood disappeared.
Kent could face a life prison sentence if convicted of first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy.

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Members of Klasskids searched for Brittney Wood in an area off Rangeline Rd. on Monday according to the girl's stepmother.
Stephanie Hanke told FOX10 News that they were looking for the girl Monday morning. She has been missing since May 30.
Brad Dennis with Klaaskids said 10 volunteers and three K-9s searched 10 acres of land. He said the area was Identified by the Mobile Police Department's investigation.
Hanke said it is the same area where Wood's brother, Derek, removed his ankle monitor while running from police in October.
Brittney, 20, went missing after family said she went to visit Donnie Holland, her uncle, in the Styx River area. Officials say Holland committed suicide on June 1, the same day they were to talk to him about a sex crimes investigation in Baldwin County.
Several members of the Wood family have been arrested in connection to that investigation, but Baldwin County officials maintain that investigation is not related to Brittney Wood's disappearance.

Holland indicted on more sex charges

BAY MINETTE, Ala. (WALA) - Wendy Wood Holland, the 33-year-old aunt of the missing Brittney Wood, appeared in court Thursday. Her trial on child endangerment charges was supposed to be held.
Instead, she was indicted by a grand jury on more sex crime charges: sodomy of a child less than 12, sex abuse of a child less than 12 and sexual torture.
Officials said in August 2012, her arrest was related to the ongoing sex abuse case that resulted in five previous arrests, four of which were also relatives of Brittney.
The Baldwin County District Attorney's Office said so far there are two victims.
Baldwin County Assistant District Attorney Teresa Heinz would not say if the victims were boys or girls, but she said new evidence led to Holland’s Nov. 29 arrest.
"This is an ongoing investigation. Anytime we have a child victim, things come out in piecemeal; and that has been the case here," said Heinz.
Officials said would not say if Brittney Wood, who has been missing since May, was a victim of sex abuse.
Authorities said Brittney was last seen May 30 heading to Baldwin County and the Styx River area with her uncle, Donald Holland, Sr., who committed suicide shortly after her disappearance. Donald was the husband of Wendy Holland.
He committed suicide days later.
While her disappearance is a separate investigation, the DA's office said there are connections to the sex crimes investigation.
"Obviously, the same people are involved. It is a family situation. Bits and pieces are connected, and bits and pieces are separate," said Heinz.
If Holland is able to make bond, she will not be allowed to have contact with the victim or any child under the age of 18.
The other arrests surrounding this investigation include:
20-year-old Donald Holland, Jr. on charges on incest, rape, and sex abuse
relative 21-year-old Derek Wood on charges of second degree rape and sodomy
relative Dustin Kent charges of rape and sodomy
relative Randall Scott Wood on charges of second degree sexual abuse, second degree sodomy, and incest
48-year-old family friend William Bonny Brownlee on charges of sodomy and sexual abuse

GRAND BAY, Ala. (WALA) - The great-grandmother of Brittney Wood's 2-year-old daughter, Payton Hamilton, said she does her best to protect the child from the details of her mother's missing person’s case.
Maxine Harris, 65, said her grandson, Andrew Hamilton, is Payton's father and has full custody of the 2-year-old. Harris said Payton spends a lot of her time with her and she is doing fine.
Harris said the last time Payton saw her mother was two days before she went missing. Since then, Harris said she has only seen her mother's picture on television.
"When the news comes on, they show the picture of Brittney. If she is standing close by she'll go to the TV and she'll point and say that's my mama,” said Harris
Continuing coverage: Brittney Wood
Harris said Payton is doing fine, but she notices her mother isn't around and has asked where she is.
“We figured when she gets old enough and asks us questions we can try to explain things to her, but right now all we can do is say she's gone somewhere,” said Harris.
Although hopeful Wood will turn up soon, Harris said she isn't sure if that will happen.
“She wouldn't be gone this long. Maybe a few days would go by that she wouldn't call my grandson which is the baby's daddy. But she would call. So we know something has happened or they got her where she cannot use a phone,” said Harris.
In the meantime, Harris is trying her best to help keep Payton busy and happy. And no matter what the outcome is in Wood’s case, Harris said she will make sure Payton grows up with a lot of love.
“Really become something. And as long as I’m living she will. I will do as much as I can do for her,” said Harris.

BAY MINETTE, Alabama -- A judge ordered a man charged with second-degree rape and second-degree sodomy to remain in jail without bail today.
Derek Wood, 21, of Mobile, appeared before Judge James Reid this afternoon for a bail hearing.
Wood is the brother of Brittney Wood, who has been missing since May.
The Wood family is the target of an ongoing sex abuse investigation.
Several family members have been arrested, including last week when Wendy Wood Holland, 33, was arrested in connection with an indictment.
A grand jury has indicted Holland on charges of child endangerment, sodomy of a child less than 12, sexual abuse of a child less than 12 and sexual torture.
Holland is in the Baldwin County Corrections Center under a bail of $200,000.
Wood was arrested in July on the rape and sodomy charges. He was later released from the Baldwin County Corrections Center on a bail of $10,000.
Wood went back to jail in October and his bond was revoked after he was involved in a chase with Baldwin deputies.
Wood was supposed to meet with deputies Oct. 12, but he did not show up for the meeting, the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office said.
After deputies went to Wood's house, a short car chase ensued. Wood was in the car with a woman. The chase ended when the car wrecked.
Wood did not stay at the site of the accident and his ankle monitor was found in some weeds.
Wood turned himself in to law enforcement several days later.

MOBILE, Alabama -- New fliers are set to encourage seasonal hunters to keep their eyes peeled for signs of missing Mobile mother Brittney Wood, who has been missing since May.
The fall hunting season started in November, closing off access to parts of Mobile and Baldwin counties that could hold the key to finding Wood.
"It's Christmas Season, it's also hunting season, which also unfortunately for us means that there's less area that we can actually go in and conduct searches just due to the hunters in the fields," said Brad Dennis, national search director for the Klaas Kids Foundation.
The group has been part of the search for Wood since shortly after her disappearance. Since June, they have organized 41 searches from Grand Bay, Ala., to Robertsdale, Ala.
A flier urging hunters to keep their eyes peeled for signs of missing Mobile mother Brittney Wood, 20, was released by Klaas Kids on Monday, Dec. 17, 2012.
Most recently, the group searched for signs of her near Rangeline Road.
Now, the group will be distributing fliers with information on Wood and what she was last seen wearing to sporting shops and hunting clubs in hopes of generating new leads.
"We do have a lot of information -- and the investigation has a lot of information -- but unfortunately all of that information doesn't give us any answers, it just brings more questions," Dennis said. "Every ounce of information we've received just continually spreads out our search areas."
Chessie Wood, Brittney Wood's mother, urged people to spread the word and bring her daughter home for Christmas.
"Any hunter that sees anything that does not belong -- they know what they see every season -- please let somebody know," she said through tears.
"There [are] people, I do believe, that [have] knowledge of Brittney's disappearance. Please, please come forward and tell me where my baby is."
Christmas is Brittney Wood's favorite holiday, according to her mother. In an effort to bring her Christmas spirit into the fold, Chessie Wood has decorated her tree with various pictures of Brittney Wood's favorite Christmases.
The Christmas tree sitting in Chessie Wood's living room is adorned with pictures of her missing daughter, Brittney Wood, 20.
"That's how I get to spend this Christmas with Brittney," Chessie Wood said.
"It has been six and a half months since Brittney's been missing. If you know anything -- I don't care how small it is -- please, please let somebody know. 'Cause I really do believe that certain people know what happened to my daughter."
The family is looking into getting professional help for Brittney Wood's 2-year-old daughter, Payton, who still believes her mother went off to the store.
"Nobody knew what to do, I mean, what do we tell a 2-year-old?" Chessie Wood said. "We thought this was going to be very short-lived, we're just going to find Brittney, y'know, where ever and bring her home.
"And now she's saying 'my mama's been at the store a very long time, I think she's buying everything in the store. Can you tell her to come home?'"
Brittney Wood was reporting missing on June 2, days after one of her uncles committed suicide, according to Fairhope, Ala., police. Wood was last seen on May 30 wearing a blue tank top, blue jean shorts, white flip flops and carrying a pink or teal tote-type bag.
She was 19 at the time of her disappearance, but has since turned 20.
Since June, five of Brittney Wood's family members and one family friend have been charged with sex-abuse crimes. Authorities do not believe her disappearance is related to the investigation.

MOBILE, Alabama – Tonight at 7, friends, family and solemn strangers will gather in Tillman’s Corner in honor of Brittney Wood, on the very lawn where – one year ago to the hour – the missing single mother walked off toward an unknown fate.
Then 19 years old, she has not been seen nor heard from since.
Brittney’s family has arranged the event, which will be held at her mother and stepfather’s home at 7087 Lenardo Drive in west Mobile. It will include a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m., followed by a communal prayer.
Major events in the search for Brittney Wood
Since Brittney Wood went missing one year ago, various searches have failed to turn up a single clue as to her whereabouts. Meanwhile, five of her family members have been charged as part of a child sex abuse investigation in Baldwin County.
May 30, 2012: Wood was last seen by family members, who said she was going to visit her uncle Donald "Donnie" Holland in the Styx River area of Baldwin County. She was reported missing on June 2, 2012, after Holland committed suicide, according to Fairhope police.
June 6-7, 2012: Baldwin County deputies search the area around Water World Drive in Baldwin County, where Wood's cell phone was last "pinged." Authorities are unable to find clues to Woods' disappearance.
By Nov. 29, 2012: Five of Wood's family members -- including her brother -- have been charged with sex abuse charges in Baldwin County. One uncle, Dustin "Dusty" Kent, faces additional charges in Mobile County and is accused of molesting multiple children. Authorities maintain the arrests are not related to Wood's disappearance.
Jan. 26, 2013: Chessie Wood, Brittney Wood's mother, holds a vigil; eight months have passed since her daughter was last seen.
Chessie Wood, Brittney’s mother, spoke with the Press-Register on the eve of the anniversary of her daughter’s disappearance, and said the vigils, of which there have been several since June of 2012, have a twofold purpose: “So Brittney will never be forgotten,” and “to show other families what to do for their missing children.”
“There’s no handbook for this,” Wood said. “You keep their memory alive. You let them live on through you.”
Mystery cloaks the missing woman’s case, but what’s known is this: Sometime between 7 and 7:30 p.m. on May 30, 2012, Brittney Wood left her mother’s house on foot and hasn’t been in known contact with anyone since.
She told her family she was going to see a female friend, but told others in her circle of friends she was going to see her uncle, Donnie Holland, at a house in the Styx River area of Baldwin County. Her family believes Holland picked her up and took her to that location, but they were never able to ask him, since, on June 1, he shot himself in the head and died days later. This is KEY. I think maybe she was trafficked out? She went to his house..he tried to protect her from the barrage of sex offender relatives and their cohorts and really Didn't 'commit suicide'..was shot to Make it look like a suicide..then they took Brittney and trafficked her out. Just speculation here.
In the weeks and months that followed, a cyclone of activity unfolded involving the Wood family, including the arrests of Holland’s wife and son, and other family members, on charges that include the rape and sodomy of children aged 16 and younger.
A comprehensive timeline, including links to a variety of AL.com stories regarding the arrests other discoveries, can be found here.

For Chessie Wood – whose sister, brother and son, Derek, are among those facing some of the above charges – the sex-abuse cases are taking a heavy toll on those in the family still maintaining a flicker of hope that Brittney, or at the very least her remains, will someday be found.
“I’ve gotten ridicule from all kinds of people, that we are child molesters,” Chessie Wood said through tears. “And every day that has made it twice as hard.”
And yet, the accusations of guilt by association are one reason she believes the public is still actively aware that Brittney is still out there, somewhere; that her case has not gone cold.
“I thought the public would turn their back on me but they haven’t,” she said. “There’s still thousands of people who’re looking and helping me find my daughter. And that’s awesome.
“People have their own lives, their own problems, but Brittney’s still the talk of the town.”
The Klaas Kids organization, which is dedicated to stopping crimes against children and finding those still missing, is based in Pensacola, Fla., and has been organizing searches for Brittney since she disappeared, including the most recent search in January of this year.
Chessie Wood said people she doesn’t even know are still searching for Brittney, which is a testament to the community spirit which inspires some to help, even in the worst of times.
By keeping a candle lit, literally and figuratively, against the darkness brought by fear and doubt, families stay actively engaged in keeping hope alive, Wood said. Even if such hope is, at its most basic level, that the relationship with Brittney isn’t forever relegated to weeping for the unknown behind closed doors and curtains.
“We’ve got to get out there and find her, and staying at home and crying about it is not going to help me find my daughter,” she said.
Knowing what happened to Brittney, one way or another, could produce some relief for her family, Wood said. Just don’t mention the word “closure” around her.
“I hate that word,” she said. “I don’t think families ever get closure from their murdered child, missing child, or whatever.
“But I believe just knowing where she is will at least give me a little piece of mind.”
In the meantime, she said she will gather with those who continue to pray for Brittney and her family, still looking to the horizon for the petite silhouette they remember so well, and are desperate to see once again.
“I do believe in the Bible, where it says, ‘where more than two are together, he will be present,’” Wood said. “I believe in all my heart that God knows exactly where she’s at, and he does not reveal anything in our time.
“It’s his time.”

Holland
Circuit Judge Jody Bishop said today he will issue a ruling this afternoon as to whether he will lower the $200,000 bond of a woman charged in a sex abuse investigation.
Wendy Holland, 33, of the 7000 block of Marle Road in Mobile, was indicted in 2012 on charges of child endangerment, sodomy of a child less than 12, sexual abuse of a child less than 12 and sexual torture.
Holland is the aunt of Brittney Wood, who has been missing since May 30, 2012. Wood was 19 years old when she disappeared.
Other members of Wood's family also have been arrested in connection with the sex abuse investigation.
Bishop listened to arguments from Assistant District Attorney Teresa Heinz and Holland's attorney, Mitzi Johnson-Theodoro, during a short bond hearing.
Johnson-Theodoro filed a bond motion on her client's behalf May 7. The motion asks that Holland's bond be lowered to $10,000.
The motion notes that others who have been arrested as part of the sex abuse investigation have been granted bonds between $10,000 and $25,000.
Johnson-Theodoro said during the hearing that Holland is unable to post a $200,000 bond.
Johnson-Theodoro said the fair thing to do would be to lower Holland's bond to an amount that is similar to the bonds that the other suspects have received.
"A $200,000 bond is a no bond to Ms. Holland," she said.
The Baldwin County District Attorney's Office is opposed to Holland's bond being reduced. The office cited the reasons why it is against Holland's bond being in lowered in a notice of opposition.
"The defendant has continued to attempt to contact the victim by sending letters to the victim and threatening phone calls to the child’s caregiver," Heinz wrote in the opposition notice.
Heinz said during the hearing that her office fears Holland could intimidate the victim if she is released on bond.
Holland has made several requests have her bond lowered. The requests were denied.
Holland is being held at the Baldwin County Corrections Center.

DA: Misunderstanding led to lower bond

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) - Prosecutors in Baldwin County said they plan to fight back after a sex abuse suspect’s bond was reduced by thousands of dollars.
Wendy Holland appeared in court Thursday June, 20, before Judge Jody Bishop, who reduced her bond from $200,000 to $25,000.
As of late Thursday, June 20, Holland had not yet bonded out of jail.
District Attorney Hallie Dixon said she is concerned it’s only a matter of time.
“Abuse allegations against children and the family dynamic -- you obviously want to prevent any type of psychological manipulation of witnesses and victims. That was one of our main purposes,” said Dixon.
Holland is one of the more controversial of 6 defendants in an alleged child sex ring that investigators say involved children, family, and friends of missing mother Brittney Wood. (hyperlink to special report)
Holland is Wood’s aunt and the wife of Donald Holland, who was last seen with the teenager.
In his order, Judge Bishop wrote that he reduced Wendy Holland’s bond for two reasons:
“She (Wendy) has been incarcerated since November 29 th, 2012. All the companions have received $10,000 and $15,000 bonds,” said Holland’s attorney, Mitzi Johnson-Theodoro.
District Attorney Hallie Dixon, however, said her office is ready to move forward with the case and believe Judge Bishop misunderstood her prosecutor.
“We have more than sufficient evidence at this point in time to proceed on to trial that is ready and can be prepared for august. So it was just - I think a misunderstanding,” said Dixon.
Dixon said her prosecutor was referring to the mountain of information in the case and had referenced her work load for the month of August.
She maintains, however, that they are ready to go to trial.
Dixon said Holland is a danger and had reached out to the victim on numerous occasion and threatened one of their guardians.
Johnson-Theodoro responded by saying her office is requesting evidence of that.
The district attorneys affice intense to ask Judge Bishop to reconsider his ruling.
“My prosecutor disagreed with it, objected with it, and is filing a motion to reconsider,” said Dixon.
As for Holland's current bond agreement, she must wear an ankle monitoring device and have no contact with children under 18 or the victims.

Mother of missing Mobile teenager pleads not guilty to sodomy, sexual abuse
on July 01, 2013 at 10:04 AM, updated July 01, 2013 at 10:05 AM
Chessie Wood, who is free on bail, pleaded not guilty to all charges – two counts of first-degree sodomy and one count of sexual abuse of a child younger than 12.
According to law enforcement investigators, the defendant sexually abused a 10-year-old girl in 2009. Police have said they believe it was a one-time act of abuse.
Defense attorney Michael McDuffie instructed his client not to talk to reporters as they left the courtroom. He said his client is innocent.
“She’s not guilty,” he said. “She’s going to have a preliminary hearing. She’s going to be proven not guilty.”
Wood, 38, is the sixth member of her family to be charged with child sexual abuse offenses since Brittney disappeared.
Chessie Wood has denied any knowledge of the crimes she has been accused of and has urged the public to continue searching for her daughter.
Mobile County District Judge Jay York scheduled Wood’s preliminary hearing for Aug. 6. At that hearing, prosecutors will present evidence related to the charge, and York will determine whether it is sufficient to send the case to a grand jury for possible indictment.
Investigators have said the victim, who now is 14, came forward in January after receiving psychological counseling in Mobile and Baldwin counties.
